The New York Yankees agreed to acquire outfielder Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for right-hander Cody Poteet, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced.

Chicago will send the Yankees $5 million to complete the deal for the former National League MVP, who won the award in 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bellinger, who plays first base and center field, made his major league debut in 2017 and spent his first six seasons with the Dodgers. During his MVP campaign, he batted .305 with 47 homers and 115 RBIs in 156 games. He also helped lead the Dodgers to a World Series crown in 2020.

He was cut by the Dodgers in November 2022 and signed a $17.5 million, one-year deal with Chicago a month later. He regained his form with the Cubs, hitting a career-best .307 with 26 homers, 97 RBIs and 20 steals in 130 games that year.

In 2024, Bellinger batted .266 with 18 homers and 78 RBIs in 130 games. He was on the injured list from April 24 to May 7 with a broken right rib.

He drove in 33 runs in his last 39 games of the season, but Chicago finished with an 83-79 record.

He is owed $27.5 million in 2025 under the first of two player options as part of an $80 million, three-year contract. The two-time All-Star also has a $25 million player option for 2026 with a $5 million buyout that would be payable in equal installments on Jan. 15, 2026, and Jan. 15, 2027.

Bellinger is a career .259 hitter with 196 homers and 597 RBIs in 1,005 games. He turns 30 in July.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Bellinger. His father Clay helped the Yankees win World Series titles in 1999 and 2000.

Poteet, 30, made his major league debut with Miami in 2021, had Tommy John surgery on Aug. 17, 2022, returned to the mound with Kansas City’s Triple-A Omaha farm team on Sept. 23, 2023, was released by the Royals and signed with the Yankees last January.

He went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four starts and one relief appearance during a season in which he was sidelined between June 12 and Sept. 25 by a strained right triceps

“Throwing the first pitch of the game is Cody Bellinger’s wife to celebrate his bobblehead night” The stadium watches as she throws the first pitch, the ball effortlessly landing into Cody’s glove. His family clapping along with everyone else as he stands up and showcases the ball and it’s only after he takes a step towards his wife and she takes one towards him, that people notice the hand resting on her stomach. 

The couple hugs and shares a kiss before Cody’s hand drifts down to where hers is, whispering something before pressing another kiss to her lips and turning to the cameras, posing for one picture just the two of them, before joining his family for another. The couple shares one more kiss before he jogs back to the dugout, his team crowding him as soon as he enters, while his family sweeps her away and into the stands.

“And we’ve just got news that this is a big night for Cody Bellinger in more than one way. While it is his bobblehead night, him and his wife are expecting their first child! Congrats to the Bellingers!” 

Jennifer barely is able to wait until there at their seats, “Are you really?” Her eyes flicker down to her daughter in law's stomach. 

She nods, and laughs as she’s immediately pulled into a hug by first Jennifer and then the rest of the Bellinger’s. “I wanted to tell you last week, but Cody insisted on doing it today. I’m sure my family’s going to kill me next time they see me.” 

“How far along?” 

“Fifteen weeks.” She smiles, hand back to resting on her belly. 

Jennifer pulls her into a hug, before letting her go so they can all sit down, tears forming in her eyes. “I’m way too young to be a grandma.” 

They all laugh, Clay patting his wife’s hand. 

“How’d your parents take it?” Cody asks, later that night as they get ready for bed. 

“They’re excited for us, not happy about finding out through a baseball game, but excited.” 

“If it makes you feel better, you're my mom’s favorite now.” 

She rolls her eyes at him, “I was your mom’s favorite before this, Mr. Bellinger.” 

“Well, Mrs. Bellinger,” He joins her in bed, leaning over to press a kiss to her stomach, before pressing a kiss to the corner of her mouth. “I guess I have some sucking up to do.”
