So. Apparently halfas are like phoenixes or something, which Danny would’ve really liked to know. 

See, usually with ghosts if they’re forced to retreat to their cores they reform as was, but apparently, since they’re still partially living, schrodinger's people and all that, halfas have to regrow their body from scratch. At least that’s what he’s understanding from Frostbite. 

But how come he has to deal with it? It’s Dan’s fault for trying to pull such a stunt! Oh, it’s either him or Vlad? Well fuck, he might have calmed down and is going to therapy in both the living realm and the Zone, but he’s waaay not equipped to raise a child except for like, monetarily wise. 

Well dammit, how long will this core incubation thing last, he has his new job in�� let him check which offer he accepted again… He has his new job in Coast City that he needs to finish packing for and then all the rest of the stuff to do.

fishlegs’ display of unwavering loyalty to hiccup after everyone turned their backs on him has to be one of the most poignant moments in book 9 for me. the entire scene of him announcing ‘i do not turn. i do not turn… hiccup is still my king. slavemark or no slavemark.’ making sure he was heard by all the other tribes when he did and then bestowing his most prized posession to his best friend as a blessing for luck and as proof of his faith in him, putting the necklace around hiccup’s neck ‘so grandly that it was like he was a hero annointing his king’ because that’s essentially who they were in that moment… and then by the end when hiccup is forced to flee— crying for him and his fate but stubbornly holding on to hope, willing himself to be strong and wearing hiccup’s helmet instead of his own

Henry James' The Turn of the Screw is insane. Insane. The most I knew of it was The Haunting of Bly Manor adaptation (which is, at best, pleasingly mediocre) and a very good essay I'd read on James' The Pupil a few times despite having not read that text. I knew it was going to be something but my God what the absolute fuck. This is about child abuse: about the essence of corruption, and it's wound up with eugenistic class pollutant nonsense yes but at its core it has such an unutterably bizarre but thunderously resonant understanding of the relationship between adults and children. About how everything is an act of abuse. This is about a woman in love with two children. It is about the fear of any separation coming between the adult and the child, anything that will pollute the child who should only be filled with the adult's influence and love. The governess and the ghosts are abusers both, in different kinds, in different ways. The smothering codependence an adult induces in you. The attempts to get free from that adult through predatory figures. Trading one abuse for another. The reality of it when confronted being so awful that it cannot be survived. Insane. Insane!
