Now we can say that all three of the main ghouls (Frankie, Draculaura, and Clawdeen) have fallen for human dudes in some of the different medias.

I kinda realised that Mr Komos' song, True Monster Heart follows the same beat as the Monster High Fright song, but the lyrics are like the corrupted version of the original.

Monster High Fright is about accepting

True Monster Heart is about rejecting

Kinda interesting when you think about it

AHHHHHH WHEN I SAW I GOT AN ASK RELATED TO THIS I FREAKED OUT DFGHNBGVFDSF TY FOR GIVING ME SOMETHING TO RAMBLE SOME MORE ABOUT ANON FOR REAL! (Also sorry for the late response, this post has been developing in my drafts for like at least a week now dfgfhng)

I absolutely agree with the conflicting messages between the two songs! I know the song focuses on the story of this universe's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the main verses, but the main focus of the song is that message of rejection of anything and everything human.

Also, because of the Jekyll/Hyde bits, it could represent the duality of where the story starts and ends in its interpretation of a "true monster heart." Instead of Mr. Hyde's human-ness making his heart "untrue," it was his utter rejection of & research into ridding himself of his Jekyll, as well as his hiding of the truth in the first place that caused him to be found out and exiled.

His heart being "untrue" had nothing to do with the fact he was half-human, because if it were, then Clawdeen and Komos's presence in and of itself within the school would've triggered its self-destruction. That was proven as a false interpretation by the story in the movie, so it's self-explanatory. A true monster heart is one of self-acceptance, despite one's flaws or differences. That's what Mr. Hyde, and Mr. Komos thereafter, had neglected to realize before Clawdeen proved the point.

Though, I've listened to both True Monster Heart and Fright Song a few times back-to-back, to try and get where you're thinking as far as the beat, but I don't hear it unfortunately (unless you meant the tempo of the song, then yes they do follow the same 120 beats per minute!).

The closest thing I can think of as far as melodic parallels between the songs is the chanting sections. The Fright Song chant is much quicker in the way it's sung compared to the chant in True Monster Heart, however. The whole of Fright Song's chant goes in 16 beats/4 measures, whereas True Monster Heart's chant takes twice as long at 32 beats/8 measures (I was a band/choir kid lol). It's mainly due to how the song kinda drags out the point, and it definitely feels like a nod to Fright Song for sure. Fright Song's chant is only there because 4/5 of the main ghouls were fearleaders, so it was sort of characterizing the cast before actually showing their characters in the webisodes.

Fun little headcanon/ramble that I forget if I ever mentioned about Fright Song, but with Holt Hyde being released in the 1st Signature wave with the rest of the the main ghouls and all, I think it was because he's intended to be the singer of the rap section before any subsequent content with the character was released (No offense but I don't think Holt DJs because he's a good singer sdfgbfds). This would line up with his current crush in canon with Frankie, as well as his former crush on Draculaura from either the diaries or books, maybe both? I forget. :'D Also I feel like Holt wouldn't hesitate to call Cleo vile immediately after saying she's charming either, he's very direct with his words. (I also interpret Jackson/Holt as bisexual because Deuce is included in the rap I DON'T CARE Y'ALL IT MAKES SENSE!)

Also I always interpreted the howl-like sound at the end of the rap as "Holt ran outta time/battery power for his music and transforms back to Jackson as it transitions to the rest of the song." It kinda works with how the beat kinda drops down with the howl, like a TV being shut off or something idk.

Ghoulia also debuted with Signature Wave 1 but she's only in like a second of the music video in the background, I figure it could've been budgetary reasons for the animation, to save on animating an extra character. Also I imagine flame-y hair wouldn't be very fun to animate in 2D, and Deuce's snakes moving on their own were bad enough I imagine to animate, so it begrudgingly checks out as to why Holt isn't in the animated bits with everyone else.

BUT I JUST WATCHED THE MUSIC VIDEO BECAUSE I WANTED TO FOR THE SAKE OF THIS POST AND THE GUY SINGING THE RAPPING BIT HAS, YOU GUESSED IT, A BRIGHT FRICKIN NEON RED LEATHER JACKET. He doesn't have the dual-toned shirt BUT IT'S WHITE AND THIS IS CLOSE ENOUGH FOR ME Y'ALL! XD

“Contest for Cleo’s Affection”

I recently received G3 Cleo as a gift from my mom, so of course I had to take pictures of Cleo with all of her potential love interests. lol I tried to frame this as how I imagine it would go if all three of them tried to ask Cleo out to the Monster Ball. 

Deuce would try to ask her the traditional way. He’d invite Cleo on a really cute, simple date to a cafe she likes, surprise her with flowers, and then ask if she would like to be his date to the Monster Ball. 

Frankie would try to ask her the flashy way. They would ask all their friends (I’m imagining Heath and Draculaura are the ones giving them the most advice) as well as consult their different brain bits on what’s the best way they can impress Cleo. They also try watching a bunch of romcoms, romantic dramas, and romance anime as a means of “study” (kabedon anyone?). Frankie’s focus is on impressing Cleo enough so that they stand out amongst the other potential suitors, and they eventually come to the conclusion that big gestures are the way to win Cleo’s heart. 

Clawdeen would try to ask her the natural way. She would start by taking Cleo out some place special, not too simple like Deuce nor too over-the-top like Frankie. They would go somewhere that has meaning to both of them in terms of the journey of their friendship. They’d spend the day together, laughing and having fun as they normally would. Then, at the end of the day, Clawdeen would confess her feelings for Cleo and tell her how much her relationship means to her. And then, finally, ask Cleo to be her date to Monster Ball. 

Anyway, here’s my thoughts on each ship:

1. I haven’t been a fan of Cleuce in G1 and I don’t see them happening in G3. Granted, I haven’t seen every episode in the new G3 animation, but from what I have seen I don’t think they’ve ever interacted. And aside from that, I just don’t think their personalities are compatible. 

2. I don’t really care for Cleo x Frankie either, and it’s not solely because I already ship Jackson x Frankie x Holt regardless of generation. Kinda like G3 Cleo and Deuce, I just haven’t seen Cleo and Frankie interact enough to want to see them together. I can see Frankie having a one-sided crush on Cleo, but that’s about it. Granted, I think my feelings for this pairing could potentially change depending on how the writers portray their relationship in future episodes. But as of now, not my cup of tea personally. 

3. Y’all can probably tell Cleo x Clawdeen is my favorite. XD I love what we’ve seen so far of their friendship and they have great chemistry. The fact that G3 Cleo has an interest in humans sets them up to have a really interesting dynamic. And also I enjoyed seeing Cleo being so supportive of Clawdeen in “Case of the Moondays”.

Familiar: Crescent is Clawdeen's family's Bingus Sphinx cat and often the involuntary model for small outfits clawdeen likes to make out of fabric scraps,which he often voices his displeasure for by knocking items off of clawdeen's desk or loafing himself in inconvenient spots around her room.

Pet Peeve: One thing that unquestionably irks clawdeen is people (most often humans) telling her that she'd look prettier if she started shaving her fur. An insensitive question even if she weren't a werewolf,and one that makes her glad her parents instilled in her a strong sense of personal pride at a young age, a similar sentiment also existing for those who tell her to straighten her naturally curly hair.

Freaky Flaw: her self-doubt,ever present in the back of clawdeen's head and often gnawing on her conscience,it makes clawdeen worry about things otherwise set in stone and makes her feel more obnoxious and abrasive than she really is,especially when it comes to her friends and love life.

Spooky Secret: ever since they met the summer before high school started clawdeen has had a frankly colossal crush on draculaura,but since draculaura got together with her brother Clawd she's decided to keep it under wraps to avoid things getting… awkward between the three of them,and besides the two of them are the closest of friends and 'Lala and Clawd make for an adorable couple.

Dream job: To work in fashion of course! Clawdeen has grand ambitions to run a full fashion empire that represents and caters to both humans and monsters, to get a headstart on said plans,clawdeen is taking economics,art and textiles classes as well as honing her skills in her own time taking commissions.

Five Fearsome Facts:

Clawdeen wore glasses during elementary and middle school but switched them out for contacts after middle school graduation, worried they'd make her look too "childish" in high school and wanting to emulate her older sister Clawdia at the time.

Outside of fashion design,one of Clawdeen's favourite pastimes is athletics and particularly running, With one of the most satisfying things for her being taking a jog/run after spending a long day in class or in her room drawing and sewing. 

With their being so many members of her family to feed as well as too many deer in New England clawdeen's family hunt and fish in the woods around their farm alongside Keeping livestock like pigs and poultry. Clawdeen often joining her dad and siblings to fish and socialise in the woods when she needs to de-stress from her busy school schedule.

Among the many hobbies clawdeen has taken up since she moved to new Salem is attempting to spin yarn for use in her designs,unfortunately this endeavour has hit a roadblock thanks to the presence of rámon the alpaca,the only wool-bearing animal on the wolf homestead and the bad-tempered bane of clawdeen's sisters howleen and weredith's existence. Nonetheless clawdeen keeps on attempting to shear him, despite his objections…

Before meeting her future besties over the summer at MHs induction weekend, clawdeen was quite lonely in middle school and spent a lot of time online fashion forums. Here however she met Skelita and Jinafire,two other aspiring fashion designers,and the three became fast friends over many conversations on Instagrave and Pinterrorest, clawdeen hoping the three can meet up someday in person at one of the big fashion weeks in Paris,London or New York.

I'm back,and considerably faster than with the last few entries in this series.

With the debut of the first werewolf of this reimaginings cast,I feel as if it's as good a time as any to explain how werewolves work in this universe.

In short, werewolves are sort of similar to vampires in the sense that they turn from a humanoid form with canid features (I feel the closest approximation in this case would be how the wolf siblings are drawn by artists like mossy_moth and nati_chuan on Instagram) into a species of wolf or fox on the full moon,clawdeen and her family in particular turn into Eastern or timber wolves,a species/subspecies native to the northeastern US and Canada:

"The Monstering" animated series review

I have no plans to review every single episode of the animated series but I probably should comment on the first one because it is a new and different continuity from the one The Live Action Movie presents to us. I do not have cable and the animated series is not on the Paramount + subscription that I pay for. so I purchased this episode from YouTube for $2. Let's go Ghouls!

Spoilers under the cut!

Right off the bat I want to thank the show runners for giving Clawdeen a house to live in... Not a cave or a den looking at you G2. and it's a pretty big house in the burbs, Apollo must make good money (it's implied that he is some type of scientist.). But Clawdeen is lonely, It's established very early on that she doesn't have any friends and the few humans we see her interact with laugh at her or dismiss her and kind of treat her like a weirdo.

Crescent is a dog in this continuity and I do not appreciate it because I have personal beef with beings owning a lesser evolved version of their own species as a pet... it would be like a human having a pet monkey... Which I guess is fine?... IDK it squicks me.

Hellooooo Papa Wolf! me-OW! I am very excited that we get to see Monster Parents in this gen! this was one aspect G1 was severely lacking in. Like the Live Action Movie this big day takes place on Clawdeen's 15th Birthday! but unlike the movie Apollo doesn't seem to have anything planned no decorations or cake? but he does give her a gift! a necklace that belonged to her mother who is NOT dead!

Apollo says he believes her mom left the necklace behind for Clawdeen and that she is coming back for it, meaning that whatever reason she had for leaving, She did not plan to abandon them. Anyways He just let's his teenage daughter wander off into the woods / cemetery by herself on her birthday... seems legit.

We don't know how long she has been walking, it could be a few minutes or a few hours. She runs into some human kids who are holding a seance to talk to a dead goldfish and then they have the audacity to call her a creeper... That's not very punk rock of any of you considering your choice in fashion and the fact y'all are trying to talk to the dead I'd expect y'all to be a bit more open minded than that. They also make fun of her for "talking to herself" while they were trying to talk to a dead goldfish... as if that is somehow less weird?... Then again hypocrites come in all styles I guess.

A disembodied voice, her necklace, the trees, wind & leaves are all pointing Clawdeen in one direction.

Clawdeen uses her werewolf athleticism to long jump to new areas, over obstacles and run to her destiny. Clawdeen seems to be fully aware that she has these powers so... why doesn't she have any friends again? She should be a track star, a basketball star, soccer, - pick a sport she would crush it! even if shes a weirdo a sports team would love her and have her back... I'm so tired of these narratives where someone is so alone and has no friends but like- WHY are they alone and have no friends? Clawdeen is cute, thin, sociable, stylish & athletic so... why no friends!? especially when the barometer for what normal kids do in this town is talking to dead goldfish in a cemetery. it's been awhile since I was in high school but I'm pretty sure none of those things were ever cool.

The magic dome over Monster High puts an end to Clawdeen's free run through the woods and she bumps into it, falling down and seeing the gate through her necklace without her glasses on, this scene is important because it confirms that Clawdeen needs her glasses to see! they are not for fashion or fun, without her glasses on the gate is blurry but when she puts them on she can see clearly.

I guess if you know where the gate is you can just walk on through the dome to the school...? sure, why not?

The first monster she meets is Spectra! I guess all that complaining during G2 paid off because Spectra has been returned to us and as a more important character it seems. She is trying to complete a homework assignment for her 'Haunt-O-Nomics" class, which I guess being a ghost the assignment was to scare someone. Clawdeen admits she is a tough scare and Spectra bails.

I wanna stress that while she is in her human form and she thinks she is a human she can smell rainbow sprinkles from outside of the school while in a cemetery and... I can only imagine what kind of smells would be there as well. How she has lived 15 years and not had any clues that she might be a wolf, especially when her outfit is full of wolf imaginary...I don't know, but here we are.

She sneaks into the Vamphitheater where they seem to be having an Ice Cream social...or an Ice Scream social!?... and Clawdeen is in awe of all the monsters, which isn't a lot in this shot.

but Draculaura is Student Bloody President (I prefer Student Disembody president) and she is introducing their new student which is Frankie! so, very convenient that Clawdeen's birthday is also the start of the school year.

Clawdeen falls from the rafters and everyone immediately clocks her as a human based on sight alone and runs for the hills... This raises some interesting questions about Monsters who look human at first glance or monsters who used to be human or monsters whose sole purpose it is to trick humans into thinking they're also human by mincing humans... but we don't have time to unpack all of that. Most Monsters run, Lagoona goes into hunting mode, Frankie doesn't understand why anyone would be afraid of Clawdeen in the first place and Draculaura introduces herself to Clawdeen... as a vampire who can "pass" for human, I can see why Draculaura would be less afraid and more understanding.

Sassy Hater Toralei is my favorite. I don't know why being British suits her so well but it does and watching her be disgusted is comedic in ways I can't explain. I can't wait to watch her clutch her pearls all season.

Draculaura and Frankie are the only ones who didn't run and aren't disgusted seeing Clawdeen. They warm right up to her.

Bloodgood does not feel the same way.

while in Bloodgood's Office Clawdeen tells Bloodgood that she has always felt out of place in the human world, she thinks she belongs at Monster High and is ready to enroll right away! Bloodgood basically gives her the old "Cool Story, still a human though" and kicks her out.

I want to point out that Nightmare is once again absent from Bloodgood's office but at least there is a painting of her in there this time.

While walking Clawdeen to the door the gang follows them trying to remain silent so they can eavesdrop on the conversation, all suddenly very curious about the human girl.

Clawdeen pleads her case to Bloodgood the entire walk and at one point Bloodgood looks... touched. I don't think Bloodgood is getting anything out of throwing Clawdeen out personally, She does not seem as bigoted about humans as her live action counterpart. I think it's a matter of "thems the rules!" and as Headmistress it's literally her entire job to enforce the rules.

Everyone trying to listen through Frankie's ear is hilarious when you consider they just met everyone today.

"I am truly sorry you feel out of place in your world. But you must see that Monster High is a boarding school for Monsters! You're obviously a human and humans will never belong here." Clawdeen understands this but still tries to beg her way in anyways.... it does not work. So naturally Clawdeen tries to sneak in! if she doesn't look like a human no one will know she is right?....wrong!

Cleo busts Clawdeen for appropriating her culture.

Clawdeen dresses up as a witch and gets thrown out again with Bloodgood driving the point home that "Witches aren't monsters and monsters are forbidden from doing witchcraft" so... RIP Casta Fierce I guess!?

Clawdeen get's thrown out half a dozen times before giving up which is pretty admirable! Frankie stops her at the gate and Clawdeen tells them that she feels like a monster! Draculaura and Deuce join in that if her destiny is telling her she's a monster that she might be one.

I'll give Clawdeen a pass on not knowing she's a wolf with her outfit having wolf imagery on it because she's 15, her dad probably still buys her clothes. and I'll even give her a pass for her eyes being yellow... I know a few people with Hazel eyes that look yellow as hell.

...but I will not excuse her lifting a teenage boy and a lab table like it weighs nothing. How was this not a giant clue that she isn't human!? No one thought to look into this? If she thought this was normal why isn't she a power lifting champion!? WHY didn't Apollo tell her she's a werewolf!? At least in the live action movie she knew she was a werewolf. This is such a stupid way to engineer conflict. I expect better from both Nickelodeon AND Mattel.

Clawdeen senses trouble and sure enough there's a "bear" running loose on campus. I gotta give it to Bloodgood here, willing to go toe to toe with a creature quadruple her size armed only with a crossbow and garlic. Bloodgood is a Dullahan and while they're very scary they aren't exactly known for being physically imposing and without Nightmare she's down most of what makes her strong. But she still ran to defend the kids regardless. That took guts! and a level head on your shoulders (ha!) and while I liked G1 Bloodgood just fine she was...uh... Not the bravest administrator a school of Monsters could have had. G3 Bloodgood complaining that organic defenses are ineffective is...hilarious.

Clawdeen asks what she should do and her necklace repeats the same thing it's been telling her the whole movie "Trust your instincts" ... I don't like this, at all... the whole "trust your instincts / your gut will never lead you wrong! / follow your heart" mindset... is a bunch of mumbo jumbo and I don't think kids should be internalizing that. We are not wild animals! we are civilized creatures! (well, most of us are) our instincts are NOT fine tuned to deal with modern problems! this is how girls wind up dating trash men and how young men become crypto bros. Our instincts DO lead us wrong most of the time! hell, even ANIMAL instincts lead them wrong! what does a scared dog do if you approach it too fast? it bites you, what happens to the dog if it bites you? it gets put to sleep... How well did those instincts work out for the dog in that scenario?

I hate to be a buzzkill but that's bad advice that we don't need to perpetuate especially when we have characters like Frankie who are trying to use the scientific method to problem solve. That's what kids need to learn! let science, rational, logic and critical thinking be your guide! not "your instincts" human instincts are doo doo ca ca poo poo.

However, because this is a cartoon, a work of fiction and NOT real... trusting her instincts works for Clawdeen...and only Clawdeen... Please for the love of everything unholy do no just casually stroll up to a full grown bear, you will absolutely die. This is an imitable act, how did it get past Nickelodeons standards and practices!? anyways... Clawdeen walks into the moonlight and has a very magical girl transformation sequence into her wolf form.

This just raises more questions than it answers TBH... has she never touched the moonlight until now? was it the necklace that transformed her? after this why is she a wolf all the time but needed the moonlight to trigger this transformation? is it because it's her birthday? Do werewolves only transform after they are 15!? I have so many questions and Nickelodeon isn't going to answer any of them.

Clawdeen fights the bear and Identifies it as not a bear but an Onikuma and she defeats it by tickling it.

Upon seeing that Clawdeen is a werewolf, Bloodgood Welcomes her to Monster High... The Onikuma gets admitted too. That's pretty messed up Bloodgood, the Onikuma scared half your students, slammed you to the ground and threw rocks at minors but you let him in because he's a monster, Meanwhile Clawdeen was begging you to let her in and you said no because she was a human... does behavior not factor into how you get accepted into Monster high at all?... Probably not otherwise Toralei wouldn't be there, but still.

Bloodgood does apologize to Clawdeen for not seeing the Monster inside of her they even gave her a DNA text to show she's 50% werewolf... Which is kinda... hmm... woof... I don't know man, getting into schools based on blood tests kinda rubs me the wrong way. BUT I will say this is an IMPROVEMENT over the live action continuity. in the live action movie Clawdeen's problems stem from her being half human. But in the show it's her being half monster that saves her. The Movies logic was her being half human meant she was not monster enough to go to Monster High so she lied about her heritage to get in. But in the show it doesn't seem to matter how much percentage of monster you have in you, just as long as it's some. The movie was really hung up on being full monster to get into Monster High but the show says half is enough, maybe a quarter is enough I don't know but I like that better than the whole pure blood thing.

"Oh! it's you again!" Apollo knows the messenger dragon!? and he knows Bloodgood!? and knows about Monster High!? and didn't think to tell any of this to Clawdeen!? Apollo that was kinda a dick move, you deserve them singed pants. His own daughter and he just threw her into the deep end. No amount of suddenly cute pet names like "Big Dog" and "Sweetie Pups" is going to save you.

Spectra is the only one in this episode who got any closure.

She was actually scary.

I like the show! a lot! I'm excited to see this season go down and introduce more Monsters along the way! I'll be tuning in every week and I hope you do too!

Thoughts on the New Trailer

normally I’d put this under a read more, but I guess that new ‘expand’ feature makes read mores pointless I guess so.

opening shot shows us the whole school, and what seems to be a whole town behind it? I was wondering why the school would be the Only safe space for monsters, like you’re only in high school for what... 3, 4 years? but it seems a whole society has been built surrounding the school, giving us a bit of a Camp Jupiter (from percy jackson) situation I guess? I think that’s really fun from a worldbuilding perspective. The trailer also gives us a few more locations

like this: the Coffin Bean, which is on school grounds now, supporting my theory that the school is more than an educational institution, but rather an entire town. Also it just looks gorgeous. The vibes are Immaculate. Gothic Castle with Slightly Less Ancient wooden buildings added on and Even more modern 1960′s Diner-looking coffee shop within it. Amazing concept, lovely execution. Also I’m just happy to see the Coffin Bean back, I used to have the playset as a kid.

we also get to see Frankie’s bedroom, it’s full of knick-knacks but what stood out to me were the Body Parts they’ve got hanging behind them. Are they there purely for decoration, or are they Replacement Parts they could change into if their limbs break or they feel like sporting a pink hand one day? (I wonder if it’s foreshadowing for the animated series, maybe switching up their body parts will be a Thing with Cartoon Frankie, we know they have a mechanical leg at least)

Bloodgood’s office looks just about how I expected it to, no Nightmare in sight though... where is the Horse! she’s supposed to be the headless horseman, not the horseless headmistress! Actual reason I took this screenshot was her “I hate mondays” mug though. A Big Mug for her Big Mood. I wonder if she bought it for herself or if it was a gift from the school staff lmao.

Heath’s shoes and socks being better than the entire rest of his fit. They’re really Heath, I like them.

Terrifying Trigonometry. I was not prepared for Frankie to look So Tiny compared to Clawdeen in some of these shots. Are they the only one not wearing heels? I feel like their height changes throughout the movie. The hallway could have looked better, but the coffin lockers and the swarm of bats that just flew through it are making me nostalgic nevertheless.

I’m still hoping the Thing they’re hinting at with these two is that they’re both half human, and that’s why they were referred to Like That on the website. Either way, it looks really good, why did they reveal the characters with their worst outfits when they’ve got looks like these throughout the movie? Strange decisions.

Draculaura’s little winged boots!! also the cape! Very cute, but not as cutesy as gen 1 Draculaura, which I’m really going to miss, but I think her new style and personality balances out this new gen 3 trio, so I see why they changed her this much. She was my fave as a kid, but I feel like if this came out back then, Frankie would probably be my favourite instead, this Draculaura is meant to be someone else’s favourite, if that makes sense.

and then there’s this which I’m guessing is Jekyll’s lab? and... tomb? I honestly have no idea what to expect from this, but the wishful thinking part of my brain wants to say this strengthens the theory that our boys Jackson and Holt will be revealed/hinted at towards the end of the movie.

As much as I like the idea of Clawdeen being a lesbian, I just know that wasn’t the original intention. The studios needed an excuse as to why they didn’t give her a love interest in the series. There was this one human guy she had a crush with, but that was in some weird anime spin-off

I’m saying this because there’s a good chance she’ll have a love interest for this movie, and people should not have their hopes up to see her in a lesbian relationship
