I was listening to an interview of one of the most well-known French picture books' writer/illustrators I've loved since kindergarten and at some point he said something like "Kids always have to be adopted, even if you've made them yourself" and I've been thinking about it all day

Re: tags in recent post about you working at a bookstore
I volunteer at my local library and I absolutely LOVE handling the picture books. I have a strong fondness for them and love seeing the variety of art styles and subjects. It always makes my day pulling a childhood favorite for a patron who requested it on hold. Sometimes I wish I could have the whole section to myself so I can browse the books freely without judgement haha.
Got some to recommend? And what are some of your nostalgic favorites?
Yes! Sometimes I see parents looking for a book for the children with them and seeing a book from their own childhood and deciding on picking that one because it makes them nostalgic and they want to share their memories with the new generation... I love it
(Most of the time it's Chien Bleu by Nadja)
Also some picture books deal with such difficult subjects that sometimes as a seller I just don't know what to do with it, like, those are really niche subjects and I wish I could give them the opportunity to shine but the market is what it is, so we're lucky to have libraries to take care of them <3
I guess I grew up with very well known picture books that my mom chose for me, like The Three Robbers by Tomi Ungerer, Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney or The Great Blueness and Other Predicaments by Arnold Lobel. Also lots of classic tales from the Père Castor collection.
For some modern picks, I absolutly love Matthew Forsythe's work with Pokko and the Drum (I adore frogs in picture books. I collect them.) and for the youngests I always go to Big Bear Hug by Nicholas Oldland. Olivier Tallec's squirrel is always hilarious. I love Stéphane-Yves Barroux's work, and would even advise adults to read them very seriously.
#I could go on and on but#:)#It's nice being able to talk about children books seriously#don't worry @french people I also grew up with Claude Ponti#on est pas des sauvages ici#la revanche de Lili-Prune or l'île des zertes or le doudou méchant#but I feel like I only talk about l'école des loisirs#those bastards own the market AND my life I guess#good for them#kinda want to post my frog pictures now

On the sea, I am free This is where I want to be Without all the pain, without all the hate It's here I want to stay
I'm on the ocean traveling But not all alone The water, the sunlight Are with me in sight

Thank you for tagging me @tockamybeloved!
3 ships you like: Okay, this one was a bit difficult because I don't necessarily have ships on my mind all of time. That being said:
-Dimileth (FE3H)
-Fu Yao and Wuji (Legend of Fu Yao)
-Jane and Silver (The Silver Metal Lover)
First ship ever: I...don't remember, sorry!
Last song you heard: Mermaids by Florence and The Machine.
And with your mermaid hair and your teeth so sharp You crawled from the sea to break that sailor's heart You only get one night upon the shore So dance like you've never danced before And the dance floor is filling up with blood But oh, Lord, you've never been so in love
Favourite childhood book: The endless tree by Claude Ponti
Currently reading: Just finished Mika Waltari's The Dark Angel (because I'm currentlt hyperfixating on the Byzantine Empire because it's my inspiration for a future WIP) and it was very well-written (I would have prefered the main female character to be less of a weathervane, but well).
Also reading The Nart sagas. Fascinating, especially regarding the parallels with myths of other cultures and the place given to female characters.
Currently watching: Queen Insoo! I like it so far. The FL is bold and ambitious and her dynamic with her step-mother is interesting.
Currently consuming: chocolate cake.
Current craving: Peace of mind and a good night's sleep. That would be great.
I'm tagging (if you want to!) @lilias42, @violets-in-her-arms-writes, @mwezina, @take-me-to-valhalla, @intricatecaprice @aninkwellofnectar.

Salut ma bien-aimèe! I wanted to thank you again for the fic recs, and also let you know that your compliment of my frenglish has been living rent free in my head since you sent it and just thank you so much <3
But I did take your suggestion of sorting by word count, and found some drabbles that were translations, and I shouldn't be this surprised but the parallel reading between the English and French actually helped a lot! So I think I'm gonna go off the deep end and read Cambiare Podents >:)
In the meantime, I'm def gonna be getting ahold of the French editions of HP, but you mentioned having some regular book recs too? Whenever you have the time, I'd love to see those 👀👀 I don't want to use you as a free resource, but I really massively appreciate the time you've been putting into this for me and I super appreciate your patience with my very limited vocabulary!
That's all, have a lovely evening and sleep well!! Love you!!!
MON AMOUR!!!! You're welcome I loove talking about what I read especially to people who are interested. Honestly the frenglish took me out I had to comment on it like it's wild. I talked about you to my family (yeah I don't have classes to complain about at diner anymore and your message was sweet) and your word order wasn't usual when you said 'j'aimerais les bons mots utiliser' (you'd put the utiliser before that, j'aimerais utiliser les bons mots) but my dad thought it was charming and it sounded like Yoda. So. That's a compliment obviously. (talking more about my online friends so that when I have the money to take a plane to come see y'all my parents don't go 'who are you going to see??' also)
Hehe Cambiare Podentes was SO important to me honestly! I started with the french translation but there were only a few chapters translated and it stopped right as it was about to get more interesting, and since the chapters are all the size of a novella the translator was updating like once a month/every few months. I didn't want to wait thought so I said well surely I can read it in english! And now here I am. So I hope you have fun with it too!!!
You're not using me as a free ressource you're giving me enrichment!! I love love love talking way too much about things that interest me but usually people aren't on the same wavelength so they listen politely but they don't really care that much. Which is fine but it's so cool when you know your recs actually have a chance of being read! I'll find you a little list of books + try to get a clean epub/pdf because I just know a lot of the stuff I like isn't going to be available outside of France and I'd feel bad for giving you recs you can't get your hands on. There's also a few visual children's books I'm thinking of (like the Claude Ponti books) that I have at home that I could probably take pics of/scan if you want, once again because I have no idea of the availability outside of France and potentially neighbouring countries/Québec. You'll have to tell me if Cambiare Podentes is the right level or if you want some simpler stuff because I can also do children's books with smaller vocabularies and easier sentences, I just have to know haha.
Also if you want me to speak french at you/with you I have a lot of free time now so 👀👀 text/voice, whatever you want, I'm free a fair amount is all I'm saying.
Thank yoouu you too! I think you said you were going to a concert so I hope you had fun! (and I didn't know if I should say it in the replies but you looked really good in that pic you posted)
#thinking about getting french books in the us got me to check out my local big retailers that also sell books#and i was going to recommend la fnac (obviously) but also another chain#so i looked it up on wikipedia and THANK GOD I DID apparently they only have stores in my city and the surrounding area!!#doxxing myself because it never occurred to me not every french child bought books & school supplies at d******#insane. i thought everyone had those but apparently not. and nobody ever told me!#anyway yeah i have a few ideas but in terms of books what i tend to read (or tended i don't read in french much nowadays)#is lots of like. fantasy. i love fantasy and worldbuilding. and a few classics. and a few bds#ah and side note the accent in bien-aimé(e) is the other one! it's probably confusing if your language doesn't do those#and it's not a big issue or anything but y'know. they make different sounds#wow i have an asks tag now

Art examples!
#personally if i had to pick among those i'd say Maurice Sendak because he's the only one who has the darkness AND humour#and draws people as not good looking#which is key to Jo's writing style imo#but honorary mention to Jill Barklem for the absurdly detailed houses i think Hogwarts in this style would be killer. she's just too cutesy#one that isn't on this list and has actually drawn a teeny tiny bit of harry potter is Quentin Blake!!#also my dream illustrator list would include some French ones including Claude Ponti (for weird character design and bold colours)#and François Place (to illustrate all the big magical spaces like hogwarts or the quidditch world cup)
