the count of monte cristo — i cannot believe i haven't updated on this at all on here, but guess who finished reading the count of monte cristo!! this is a feat for me. the fact that i managed to get through 1300 pages in less than a month is insane, but also testament to dumas' ability to completely capture the reader

Day 6: Tab Hunter (1931 - 2018)

Tab Hunter was one of Hollywood's 1950s golden boys, as well as a chart-topping singer. He appeared in over 40 films and was known for his All-American public persona.

Despite rumors that he was in relationships with actresses like Debbie Reynolds and Natalie Wood, these were actually studio-designed publicity stories to cover up the fact that Hunter was a closeted gay man.

His notable gay relationships included ones with Psycho actor Anthony "Tony" Perkins, professional figure skater Ronnie Robertson, and film producer Allan Glazer (Hunter's partner of 35 years). Hunter was plagued by rumors about his sexuality early in his career, but did not come out publicly until 2005.

Born on this day: ne plus ultra of 1950s male starlets from notorious agent Henry Willson’s stable, the delectable Tab Hunter (né Arthur Andrew Kelm; 11 July 1931 – 8 July 2018). Long after his matinee idol heyday, Hunter displayed an unexpected capacity for good-natured self-mockery when Prince of Puke John Waters cast him opposite Divine as Todd Tomorrow in Polyester (pictured), his 1981 pastiche of Ross Hunter / Douglas Sirk melodramas (and - I’d argue - Waters’ most underrated movie). I know I tell this anecdote a LOT, but literary roué Rupert Smith and I fleetingly encountered Hunter once in 2015 backstage during The British Film Institute’s Flare Festival. (Hunter was promoting the documentary Tab Hunter Confidential). At 83 and accompanied by his long-term boyfriend, Hunter was still ludicrously handsome, with a jaw line chiseled out of granite. It was a swooning glimpse of old-school Golden Age Hollywood star charisma!
