Until very late in his career, with a devastating spinal injury (and many other injuries that he told no one about), Larry Bird was neither slow nor unathletic. He was originally a power forward, his natural position, and was quicker and more athletic than most power forwards of his era.

Bird was, however, being highly intelligent and as cunning as anyone ever to play the game, savvy enough to know that being underestimated was a highly effective strategy. His defense, which was excellent, as his defensive win shares demonstrate, was built entirely on this principle: Letting opponents believe that he was not paying attention to anyone but his man, then suddenly trapping an opponent (usually not his man) or intercepting a pass, all in such a way as caused maximum disruption to the other team's offense.
