Three Dog Night Drummer and Co-founder Floyd Sneed Dies at 80
- “A complete original and a sweetheart of a man,” band says
Floyd Sneed, founding drummer of Three Dog Night, died Jan. 27 at 80, his former brother-in-law, Tommy Chong said.
Sneed died “after a battle with poor health,” Chong said.
A “saddened” Three Dog Night eulogized their former drummer as “an absolutely wonderful human being, a complete original and a sweetheart of a man.
“He was also an extraordinarily unique drummer who brought so much to Three Dog Night’s sound.”
Sneed played with the group during its initial 1968-1974 run and again from 1981-’84. He was a member of the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame.
Former Three Dog Night singer Chuck Negron remembered his “friend and musical peer” as “a unique and powerful drummer and more importantly a kind and special human being,” in a post on social media.
“I love you, Floyd, and I will keep you in my heart always,” Negron said.

9th July 1946 saw the birth in Kirriemuir of Bon Scott.
Born Ronald Belford Scott, his family emigrated from Scotland to Australia in 1952 when he was six.
Scott attended North Fremantle Primary School and John Curtin College of the Arts until he dropped out at the age of fifteen. It was while in high school that he was given the nickname “Bon”.
Bon had a difficult youth full of neglect, crime and abuse. After spending a few months in juvenile institutions for a number of minor offences including theft and "unlawful carnal knowledge", make of that what you may lol, he even tried to escape from Fremantle Prison. He gained interest in music after working a few odd jobs on his release.
He started his first band, The Spektors, in 1966 and served as their drummer while sharing occasional lead vocals. It wasn’t, however, until in 1974 when he gained widespread recognition as the frontman of the hard rock band AC/DC, after replacing their lead singer Dave Evans. He recorded six albums with the band and became a worldwide celebrity with 1979’s Highway to Hell. Bon shared the writing credits of the title song with Malcolm and Angus Young. The album was AC/DC’s first album to peak inside the US charts.
Bon, unfortunately, was not a part of the grand success of the band’s next album, Back in Black. He was drinking heavily at a night club in London and died of acute alcohol poisoning on 19 February, 1980 inside a friend’s car. There have been a number of conspiracy theories involving Bon’s death, but none absolutely proven. Back in Black would go on to be their biggest-selling album with Brian Johnson as the new vocalist.
When AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003, Bon’s family members attended the ceremony in his place. He was cremated, and his ashes are buried in the Fremantle Cemetery in Fremantle, Western Australia.
Bon Scott was rated as number one in Classic Rock’s July 2004 list of the “100 Greatest Frontmen Of All Time”. He was ranked fifth on Hit Parader’s 2006 compilation of the 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Vocalists of all time.
His bronze statue was unveiled in 2008 at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour in Western Australia. A statue of the AC/DC singer was unveiled at the annual Angus, Bonfest festival held in his honour in May 2016

Dickey Betts
Guitarist, singer and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band best known for writing their 1973 hit Ramblin’ Man
Dickey Betts, who has died aged 80, was a founder member of the Allman Brothers Band, one of the most influential US “southern rock” groups of the 1970s. The hard-living outfit blazed out of Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 with a mix of rock, blues, country and jazz that defined the genre, also influencing artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, the Black Crowes and Kid Rock. They scored several platinum and gold albums and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Although the six-piece band was ostensibly led by the blond- haired Allman brothers, Duane and Gregg (guitar and keyboards/vocals respectively), as joint lead guitarist, singer and main songwriter Betts played a crucial role. A larger than life character with his cowboy hats, long moustache and gunslinger good looks, Betts wrote many of the band’s best loved songs, including Jessica, Blue Sky and the 1973 US No 2 smash Ramblin’ Man, inspired by life on the road.
The signature duelling of Betts’s and Duane Allman’s lead guitars rewrote the rule book of how twin guitarists play together - previously one had played lead and the other rhythm. The band’s huge fanbase included President Jimmy Carter, and in 2020 Betts even received the rare accolade of a mention in a Bob Dylan song, when Murder Most Foul contained the line “Play Oscar Peterson, play Stan Getz/Play Blue Sky, play Dickey Betts.”
He was also the inspiration for the rock star character played by Billy Crudup in the former rock journalist Cameron Crowe’s film Almost Famous (2000), the director having been drawn to Betts’s aura of “possible danger and playful recklessness behind his eyes”.
Betts was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, one of the three children of Harold, a carpenter, and his wife, Sarah (nee Brinson), who wrote poetry and played the cornet in a Salvation Army band. Although his father was also a keen fiddler, Dickey’s first instrument was the ukelele, which he started playing aged five, later graduating to the mandolin and the banjo.
He was at West Gate elementary school when he wrote his first song, Seven Years With Pamela, about his sister. He then attended various West Palm Beach schools until seventh grade, dropping out of high school when he was 16, by which time his pursuits included carpentry, hunting and listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the family radio.
Hearing Chuck Berry’s Maybellene in his mid-teens prompted another switch of instrument, as he “started realising that girls like guitars”. He dropped out of high school aged 16 to tour the US with a travelling circus in his first band, the Swinging Saints, but was playing in Second Coming with the bassist Berry Oakley when Duane Allman invited both men to join his new group.
The lineup was completed by the drummer Butch Trucks and – unusually in white-dominated 60s southern rock - a black second drummer, James Lee Johnson, who had previously played with Otis Redding and Percy Sledge.
Although sales of their first two albums were sluggish, Duane Allman’s appearance on Eric Clapton’s 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs – which included the classic hit Layla – boosted the heavy-touring Allman Brothers Band’s rising profile. Their 1971 live album At Fillmore East sold 1m copies.
After Duane Allman and Oakley were killed in motorcycle accidents in 1971 and 1972 respectively, Betts led a rejigged lineup. The 1973 album Brothers and Sisters – featuring Ramblin’ Man and the instrumental Jessica, later the theme to the television motoring show Top Gear – topped the US charts for five weeks, while 1975’s Win, Lose Or Draw went into the Top five. By then the band were succumbing to a familiar music industry cocktail of success, drugs, alcohol and feuding.
Betts and Gregg Allman both made solo albums, before Betts felt betrayed when the latter testified against the band’s road manager in a 1976 drugs case and refused to work with him again. Nevertheless, they regrouped in 1978, splitting again in 1982.
A second comeback in 1989 proved more enduring, although in 2000 Betts was fired over his drinking. That third spell in the band had been dogged by alcohol and drug abuse, lawsuits and arrests, and in 1996 he was charged with aggravated domestic assault after pointing a handgun at his fifth wife, Donna (nee Stearns), whom he had married in 1989. The charges were dropped after Betts agreed to enter rehab.
In his later years he returned with his own Dickey Betts Band and played in the band Great Southern with his son Duane. True to his ramblin’ man credentials, he remained on the road to the last, even after brain surgery following a 2018 fall at home, and he released live albums well into his 70s.
He is survived by Donna and his children, Kimberly, Christy, Jessica and Duane.

Last weeks poll ended with 16 votes, the winner (it was to be expected) was ZZ Top's 1983 "Eliminator" with 31,3%. It was a struggle for me aswell, but i ended up choosing "Afterburner" because it's the one that i keep going back to. It's must have something to do with that unique 80's sound...
youtube
The video for "Paranoid" was filmed in Belgium (1970), it was the first song i ever heard by Ozzy and Black Sabbath... i was hooked instantly! It's still my favorite Sabbath album to date, i mean... how can it not be with classics like "War Pigs", Paranoid", "Planet Caravan", "Iron Man" and "Fairies Wear Boots"?
youtube
Considered by many to be the first heavy metal band, Black Sabbath was formed in 1968 by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward in Birmingham, UK. The band's original name was the Polka Tulk Blues Band (later shortened to Polka Tulk) and later on changed to Earth before becoming Black Sabbath inspired by an Italian horror movie of the same name. The original line-up lasted until 1979, after which Osbourne was fired and replaced by Ronnie James Dio. The line-up changes would continue, with no line-up remaining intact for consecutive studio releases. Throughout the changes, only Tony Iommi and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls, who also joined the band in 1979, would remain with Black Sabbath, although Nicholls would not always be credited as a full member. In 1997, Iommi, Butler, Ward, and Osbourne reunited, touring and releasing a live album in 1998, although a long-rumored studio release did not appear (the group attempted to record a new album in 2001 with producer Rick Rubin but the sessions were scrapped). After that, the group periodically reunited to tour with Ozzy's "Ozzfest" tour. In 2004, longtime keyboardist Geoff Nicholls was replaced by Adam Wakeman for an Ozzfest tour. No reason was given for the replacement. In 2006, the original line-up was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame.
youtube
In 2007, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, and drummer Vinny Appice (who were featured on 1981's "Mob Rules" and 1992's "Dehumanizer") announced that they would tour together as Heaven & Hell (with Iommi, who owns the Black Sabbath name, deciding to keep the Black Sabbath name solely for the original line-up in light of their Rock 'n' Roll HOF induction) to support a Dio-era greatest hits release, which also featured 3 new Dio/Iommi compositions. A brand new live album was released under the Heaven & Hell name that same year, followed by a studio album in 2009.
youtube
In 2009, Osbourne sued Iommi over control of the Black Sabbath name. The lawsuit was settled the following year. In late 2011, it was announced that the original line-up would be recording and touring. Shortly, afterward, Bill Ward dropped out, stating he had been given a contract that was "unsignable". The three remaining members opted to continue without him. In 2013, the band released "13", their first studio album with Osbourne in 34 years. The band played their final live show in Birmingham, UK, on February 4, 2017. Although the band has announced that full-scale touring is done, Tony Iommi has stated that the door is still open for future music and possible live appearances.

blast from the past day, saw the 1990s cinema moofie classic speed staring keanu reeves pre matrix, sanda bulloch pre almost everything and a scene stealing dennis hopper. suspension of disbelief from the moment this starts, the credits look horribly dated but everything else stood the test of time.
arrived straight from work, had an hour to kill and the moofie was on at the casino... rather than a drink or a spin i spent the time continuing reading my latest rawk n roll autobiog, midnight oil's drummer rob hirst's tour diary of the oils in post 9/11 u s of a willy's bar and grill. this is a fun read, the paranoia of the times, the searches, a band that's on it's way down and playing their gigs to smaller crowds than the last time, a rock n roll hall of fame visit to find their autobiog on the database hasn't been updated since 1993, cops wanting to see the tall, bald guy, the acoustic set at the local radio stations, the meet and greet afterwards. the internet era. a tremendous read so far.

LEGENDS OF GUITAR: The Man . . The Myth . . The Guitar. Johnny Winter was the first white Texas bluesman to make it on a big scale. In 1968, he released his first album, The Progressive Blues Experiment. Soon after Johnny met the Chicago Blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield, who invited Winter to join him and Al Kooper on stage at the Fillmore East during a December 1968 performance. Columbia Records officials at the show were very impressed and signed Johnny to a very large advance, $600,000. Johnny Winter’s first Columbia Records release was logically titled Johnny Winter and included the same personnel as The Progressive Blues Experiment; bassist Tommy Shannon, drummer Uncle John Turner, and Edgar Winter on keyboards and saxophone. It was a major success. Second Winter followed in 1969 plus great success in concerts – and an affair with Janis Joplin – that led to an historic Madison Square Garden concert. Winter went on to play in the Muddy Waters Band and paired with just about every top Blues artist of the 1970s and 80s. Three albums produced by Winter for Muddy Waters, Hard Again (1977), I'm Ready (1978), and Muddy "Mississippi" Waters – Live (1979) have won Grammy Awards. Several of Winter’s own albums were also nominated for Grammy Awards and in 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.
Decades on from his death, Stevie Ray Vaughan is still being discovered by new generations. In the decades since his passing, SRV’s impact on the music scene has become more and more pronounced. His influence – his searing guitar style, eloquent songwriting and consummate musicianship – is undeniable on the new generation of blues rockers like Joe Bonamassa, Philip Sayce and John Mayer, while his classic albums such as Texas Flood and Couldn’t Stand The Weather are now justifiable stalwarts of the blues canon. His music seemed to unite everyone: tattooed Chicano bikers, besuited lawyers and crystal-carrying New Agers. The sound of Stevie Ray’s stinging Strat and gritty voice went directly to the hearts of the huddled masses. You see, that old blues adage is true: What goes around comes around . . May their memory endure.

With a rock legacy spanning more than five decades, Foreigner was built around the creative forces of Mick Jones and Lou Gramm. One of the bestselling classic rock bands of all time, with worldwide sales topping 80 million records, Foreigner had an impressive catalog of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s – all still recognizable to this day.
Foreigner is a British-American rock band formed in New York City in 1976 by guitarist Mick Jones, vocalist Lou Gramm, drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Ed Gagliardi and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, the last of whom was also a founding member of King Crimson. Foreigner is one of the world's best-selling bands of all time, with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records, including 37.5 million in the US.
With a legacy spanning five decades, Foreigner has dominated rock & roll radio, making them one of the best-selling rock bands of all time. With worldwide sales topping eighty million records, Foreigner’s extensive catalog of hits is still recognizable to this day, with their music embedded in pop culture from Miami Vice and The Simpsons to Arrested Development and Stranger Things.
Foreigner was built around the creative forces of Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, whose original vision for Foreigner was a fusion of rock, progressive rock, R&B, and pop sounds, and the lineup of Jones, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliardi, and Ian McDonald, paired with Lou Gramm’s distinctive and emotive vocals, brought it all together. Jones and Gramm became legendary songwriting partners, crafting an arsenal of multiplatinum albums and Top Thirty hits, including “Cold As Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “Hot Blooded,” and “Juke Box Hero.” Their Number One U.S. hit “I Want to Know What Love Is” remains one of the Top 25 performed songs from the ASCAP catalog. In recognition of their partnership, the duo was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
The Jones/Gramm songwriting partnership resulted in Foreigner’s first eight singles charting in the Billboard Top Twenty, making them the first band to achieve this milestone since the Beatles. With the massive success of Foreigner’s second album Double Vision, the best-selling record of their career, the band quickly became an arena headliner.
Before recording 1979’s Head Games, Gagliardi was replaced by ex-Peter Frampton and Roxy Music bassist Rick Wills; Gagliardi’s departure was shortly followed by that of Greenwood and McDonald. Despite these lineup changes, the quartet of Jones, Gramm, Elliott, and Wills continued to record and tour arenas throughout the 1980s in whatever iteration they found themselves – a premise that has served the band for the decades since, as it continues with only Jones from the original lineup. Foreigner’s nearly fifty-year musical legacy has influenced everyone from Bon Jovi to Melissa Etheridge to Mark Ronson.

July 16, 2012 - Jon Lord, founding member of the band Deep Purple, died of a pulmonary embolism while being treated for pancreatic cancer at age 71.
Jonathan Douglas Lord (b. 9 June 1941) was an English composer, pianist, and Hammond organ player known for his pioneering work in fusing rock with classical or baroque forms, especially with Deep Purple, as well as Whitesnake, Paice Ashton Lord, The Artwoods, and The Flower Pot Men. In 1968, Lord co-founded Deep Purple, a hard rock band of which he was regarded as the leader until 1970. Together with the other members, he collaborated on most of his band's most popular songs. He and drummer Ian Paice were the only continuous presence in the band during the period from 1968 to 1976, and also from when it was reestablished in 1984 until Lord's retirement from Deep Purple in 2002. I'm A Boy by The Who
About The Who:
The Who are an English rock band formed in London in 1964. Their classic lineup (1964–1978) consisted of lead vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. They are considered one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century. Their contributions to rock music include the development of the Marshall stack, large public address systems, the use of synthesizers, Entwistle's and Moon's influential playing styles, Townshend's feedback and power chord guitar technique, and the development of the rock opera. They are cited as an influence by many hard rock, punk, power pop and mod bands. The Who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

About I'm a Boy:
This is about a boy whose mother wants him to be a girl, while the boy longs to assert his real sexual identity. The controversial subject of cross-dressing was probably the reason why this failed to reach the American Top 100.

So... last weeks poll ended with only 4 votes (myself included), i guess most of you didn't like Trouble or just aren't familiar with the band. I hope you guys aren't tired of these kinda posts yet, because i think they are a fun way to delve in and celebrate the bands we all love. Anyhow, last weeks winner was Trouble's 1989 self titled album with 50%. This also was my favorite because it got me into the band when i first saw the video for "Psychotic Reaction" on Headbangers Ball. I think it's the perfect match in sound between the first 3 Trouble albums and the 2 that followed.
A good friend of mine (@goblinkleaver) suggested this weeks band ZZ Top, because last week (on March 23rd) was the 40th anniversary of their 8th studio album "Eliminator". It was the album that got me into ZZ Top. The hit singles "Gimme All Your Lovin", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" were all over the radio.
I was 13 at the time (1983), when Eliminator was released and i remember i actually nicked my first copy on cassette from a local record store. But it was the album that came afterwards that is my all time favorite, 1985's "Afterburner".
youtube
I think this weeks band needs no further introduction, if you aren't familiar with ZZ Top.. you've been livin' on another planet. But just in case, here's a short bio...
ZZ Top is an American rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill who is replaced (to Dusty's wishes) by former basstechnician Elwod Francis after Hills death july 28 2021. The band and its members went through several reconfigurations throughout 1969, achieving their current form when Hill replaced bassist Billy Etheridge in February 1970, shortly before the band was signed to London Records. Etheridge's departure issued primarily from his unwillingness to be bound by a recording contract.
youtube
Since the release of the band's debut album in January 1971, ZZ Top has become known for its strong blues roots and humorous lyrical motifs, relying heavily on double entendres and innuendo. ZZ Top's musical style has changed over the years, beginning with blues-inspired rock on their early albums, then incorporating New Wave, punk rock and dance-rock, with heavy use of synthesizers.
youtube
ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. As a group, ZZ Top possesses 11 gold records and 7 platinum (13 multi-platinum) records; their 1983 album, Eliminator, remains the group's most commercially successful record, selling over 10 million units. ZZ Top also ranks 80th in U.S. album sales, with 25 million units.

FOR YOUR MOTÖRHEAD MONDAY -- DID YOU REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR TOUR PROGRAM IN '82?
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on an original MOTÖRHEAD Tour Program for the band's "Iron Fist Tour," and featuring the band's classic lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, "Fast" Eddie Clarke and "Philthy Animal" Taylor. It was to be their last. The international tour of the album started on 3-17-1982 and would finish on 11-24-1982.
"As guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke told me: "Iron Fist" was the toughest because we were getting low on ideas and things were getting strained.”
Drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor was particularly affected by the onrush of fame, Eddie claimed.
“Lemmy was not himself, either… Indeed, Lemmy had begun to delight his ego just a tad too much of late. Playing the biggest show of their career so far, headlining a six-band line-up billed as the Heavy Metal Barndance at Bingley Hall in Stafford, in 1981, Lemmy collapsed halfway through; the rest of the show was cancelled.
“Lemmy’s been up for three days drinking vodka,” said a still pissed-off Clarke. “He’s been fucking chicks all day and we’ve got twelve thousand kids crammed waiting for us. All day people have been offering me lines of coke, and I’ve only had one fucking Heineken because I want to be together for this show.
"Fifty-five minutes into the set, Lemmy disappears backwards, collapses on the stage. Me and Phil are furious. "You let us down, you cunt!" And he’s saying: "Me being up for three nights has nothing to do with it." Of course not!""
