Amy Rose’s Quills

Yes, it’s that time again! Where I ramble about character designs and why I adore them so much. In this post, I want to talk about Amy’s quills and why I like the different ways it can be represented in official and none official media.

Just like Amy’s eye color. I’ll also make guesses as to why her overall design changed officially and in canon to make things interesting. Let’s get started!

Long Quills

This style is in Amy’s first design. Being the Minnie to Sonic’s Mickey, she had the same quill style as him. Aside from her bangs. While I do think the quills look cute, it almost makes Amy look like Sonic’s sister. I guess that’s why they changed it later on.

I say this only in comparison to her modern design. The Minnie inspiration is the reason she’s here. I’m only talking about her changing designs and making it less identical to Sonic.

My favorite iteration of her classic look is in Sonic Mania Adventures Christmas special. Just look at the differences. It may not be a HUGE change, but even her nose is slightly smaller. I just love the Mania’s designs in general. They’re awesome! I still do love the OG design too. Classic Amy is so precious.

Look at how Sonic’s quills are messier than Amy’s here. I think it gives them more dimension. Showing how one cares more about grooming themselves than the other. It’s kind of cool and I wish it was integrated in canon more. Not because it’s “important” but it’s a fun idea.

Short Quills

Ever since Sonic Adventure, Amy’s design changed immensely. Even Sonic himself noticed it in Adventure 1. Her outfit, eye color, nose, and quills (besides her iconic bangs) are different. Giving her an older more teenage look. I say this because Amy doesn’t look any older or younger then Sonic.

(Or any other teenage/young adult character for that matter)

They are sometimes even shown to have the same hight at times. Back to the quills, Amy now barely resembles her classic design and definitely looks less like a Minnie Mouse inspired design. Her classic design is still amazing, but I believe the change was a necessary one. The differences between her and Sonic are more apparent and noticeable and I think that’s a good thing.

Mixed

Here’s my own example, but there are many other fantastic fanartist who does something similar with both styles together.

Why do people like this quill style a bunch? I’d say it adds more flavor to her personality. Her having the classic long quills along with the short front dreads could symbolize her adventurous side along with her girly side. It blends the two nicely and overall looks visually interesting. While I will say her shorter quills does differentiate her better, I’ve seen plenty of artist change it up a bit in unique ways. It’s fun to create and see what ideas an artist could have for Amy.

Why Amy’s Quills Were Changed?

I’d say the official reason is because of the things I said before. But the in canon reason could be Amy wanting to look pretty enough for the next time she sees Sonic. Or perhaps she thought to change her appearance simply because she wanted to look cuter. Though I’d say the first answer is the most likely because her love for the blue blur was much more prominent in the past.

Conclusion

Did I use this as an excuse to gush about Amy again? Yep! I regret nothing. I love love LOVE Amy Rose and how interesting her design is in the past and present.

This was an ask I accidentally deleted! Oops! I also listen to all the music I put in here! So it’s also a small glimpse into what I listen to! Also as some of you know I’m in the scemo and goth subcultures! But I know a lot about alternative cultures period so this was fun to make!

LJ: VICTORIAN GOTH 100%!! / Victorian Circus Core

Literally a goth king. That’s an outfit I would definitely see at a goth club!(I’ve been to many)

Another part of goth culture is liking horror/ monsters. Since LJ is a monster he’d fit right in!

He’d be accepted by most goths despite his looks bc goths have morbid dark fashion senses themselves!

So if they saw his swirly cone nose and sharp teeth they’d be like: omg! I love your look!

He’d definitely listen to classical music and other goth music Specifically Switchblade symphony and Cocteau Twins

He definitely listens to old PATD

I can see him wearing other Victorian inspired clothes too!

Victorian goth as well, but she leans more in the gothic Lolita side of it

Wears pretty gothic Lolita dresses with lots of black and white lace, buttons and she’ll have a matching bonnet and parasol to match when she’s feeling extra fancy!

She feels so elegant and feminine when she puts her multiple layers of petticoats on! She wouldn’t be caught dead without them!

Her makeup and lipstick is always perfect.

Her hair is always either perfectly curled or perfectly straightened

The goal is to look as doll like as possible ( also because she is one!)

She listens to music box like music if that makes sense?? For example Swan Lake by Fairy Lullaby or Porcelain Eyes

She, like LJ listens to classical music and goth music

But mainly classical and music box!

Will go to tea parties and knows how to make tea cakes and sandwiches

Just a lady all around!

Jane: Trad Goth/ Casual Goth/ Amy Lee

Since Jane is always on the move and doesn’t really have time to get all dressed up

So she’ll usually be in a simple black dress or black pants and a turtleneck

But when she does get a chance to dress up

She dresses trad goth mixed with Amy Lee

She’ll have her hair long with bangs covering her forehead

Trad goth makeup, but a bit more modern,big eyeliner and arched brows

She’ll be wearing corsets and waist trainers

Long skirts, ripped leggings

High heel platforms

She goes all out and she looks great!

Listens to music like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Years Day and The Birthday Massacre

Can do goth dances very well

God she’s beautiful

Toby: Midwestern Emo/ early 2000s emo/ a tad grunge/ indie

He just looks like one tbh

But seriously he had a hard life and emo music gives him comfort

Toby wears flannel shirts, grandpa sweaters, simple tee shirts and pants that are loose but not too loose

Hiking boots, sneakers

He listens to Chidos, The Front Bottoms, State Champs, Real Friends, Nirvana, Yawning, Hail the Sun, The Used, A Lot Like Birds, Static Dress, Mild High Club and many many more

He can play the guitar, drums and sing pretty well

He needed something to keep him busy while he was homeschooled after all! And it took his mind off of the horrible things he was going through

Plus with him feeling no pain, he could practice his hands bleed so his hands are really calloused

He likes to sit in the woods and just listen to music sometimes

He’s a loner like that

Especially in the fall when the leaves are so pretty

He feels almost peaceful. Almost

EJ: Tbh I can’t put him in a single box I feel like he’d be everything

Nina wears either all black with colorful hair or has her signature black and pink with more colorful outfits

Cheeta print, skulls, DIY stuff, band shirts, tube tops, tutus, skinny jeans, brass knuckle necklaces, hoop earrings, black eyeshadow, big teased hair with raccoon tails

Yeah she’s 2000s emo fs

Goes to raves and concerts like crazy

But she’s not opposed to any kind of music and will do goth makeup for fun

And wear Jane’s clothes

She thinks goth is really pretty but it’s just not her

She’ll stick with scemo lol

first outfit: i just wanted to give him smthn cool while still staying within what i think he'd wear. racing jacket, ripped jeans, and a graphic tee. honestly i can't imagine sonic as someone who cares too much about his clothes, but is obsessed with sneakers.

second outfit: another racing type jacket with a tank top and sweatpants. I imagine he'd wear this in colder weather or smthn.

third: just a basic tank top and shorts. I think sonic would be a huge sneaker fan, im not gonna think abt how they would probably shred if he even tried to run cuz i dont care

AMY

first: orange and pink are such an underrated combo, i think it really compliments her bright personality. i imagine she has a very clean very feminine style. her shirt is supposed to have a flower on it.

second is just modern amy fit lol

third: i saw someone elses art of her in a little wrap shirt and i loved it so i took some inspo ^^ I couldnt decide between making the skirt seperate or trying to make it all mesh into a dress so i did it in a way that i think could be read as either

I’ve been working on this for a little over a month now. After seeing the Sonic Twitter send a congratulations message from Amy to Peach, I had the idea of drawing Amy with forms to match Peach if she was in Princess Peach Showtime too! I tried to make them be unique and fit with Peach’s at the same time.

Swordfighter Amy: Leaning even more towards the Princess Knight/Utena aesthetic with the vibrant spring green to match her red rose.

Detective Amy: Similar colors but a younger feel compared to Peach’s mature look.

Patisserie Amy: With a whisk rather than a piping bag, she’s got a strawberry shortcake colored outfit drawing inspiration from the Kirapati uniforms.

Kung Fu Amy: Draco from Puyo Puyo inspired a different take on a martial arts outfit.

Ninja Amy: Might be easier to spot in the shadows but the maroon colors look great on her.

Cowgirl Amy: She stole some of Knuckles hat for this one.

Figure Skater Amy: Using mauve rather than blue, she’s got her old Fleetway hairstyle and a more Pretty Rhythm feel to her.

Dashing Thief Amy: Based on Phantomirage and Saint Tail, it gives her a bit of a magician look.

Mermaid Amy: Can you guess what Mermaid anime’s soundtrack I listened to as I drew this one?

Mighty Amy: Going back to her classic quills was inspired by the ‘Princess Amy’ from an old Sonic Super Special issue, and if Peach’s armor is red like Baymax then Amy gets purple like Hiro.

Radiant Amy: She takes on a shining gold hue like her dear Sonic’s super form. The color of a shining star.

Super Radiant Amy: Using the modern take on her super design seen in the Sonic World DX fangame (full props to them), she brings out her most brilliant spark.

After I finished my Sally multiverse variant's I decided to do an Amy Rose version , I might do some more of these if I get the inspiration...

Prime/Mainline Amy - I've done Amy Rose redesigns before but never of her modern design, so I took a crack at it. She's a mix of Lolita and Y2K inspirations. I also modified her hammer with some heart motifs as I really like to use them in my mainline Amy designs.

Anti Amy/Rosy Rascal - Such an iconic character, however I did want to give her an outfit that wasn't just a recolor of classic Amy. I used Amy's gothic skin as inspiration and darkened her color palette to differentiate her further.

Boom Amy - This design is perfect so I changed very little, just added a headscarf to change up her hair accessory. I also gave her a more rounded silhouette to help sell the perfectionist vibes her character has in the show.

Classic Amy- Again I want the classic characters to have more chibi attributes so I definitely pushed the simple cuteness in this Amy's design. Her color palette has more pastels and I used the quill style she had in the manga comics.

Zamy Zose - This Amy never showed up in the archie comics however I think she was confirmed to exist by one of the writers, so I came up with this agent getup for her, a stark contrast to the rest of the Amy's. I like the idea that all the no zone variant's look more like actual animals than the rest of the cast, make's them look more serious.

I caved and watched an entire playthrough of Sonic X Shadow Generations. Both sides.

Sonic Generations just looks like the same old fun and honestly, not being re-released as a broken mess is what I wanted for it the most and that's exactly what it seems to be.

They somehow struck the (almost) perfect balance between edgy and heartfelt for Shadow Generations. (I think him getting the powers the way he does is just on the brink of overdone edge, but the package is more sincere than edgy, so I'm cool with it.)

I feel like in the case of Shadow's character, you have to go fully sincere for it to work at all because of the archetype he is. I think this is why I liked him in Sonic Adventure 2, at least.

Don't earn the dark elements or put in the character work and combine this with basically zero levity and you have shallow, tedious melodrama on your hands, which is the issue with Sonic 06.

(I think Shadow's story in 06 actually had the least of it, but Sonic's and Silver's absolutely suffered from weightless melodrama the most in my eyes.)

Lean too much into emphasising how dark and cool you are and you become childish, which was the issue with Shadow The Hedgehog.

Shadow fits inside the Vegeta archtype, specifically more leaning into post-redemption Vegeta.

Distant and stoic on the surface, but deep down good-hearted and a softie for the people he cares about.

All of this aside, though, Shadow Generations looks like a polished, consistent and complete package.

I think the entire playthrough I watched only had 2-3 instances of true glitches.

All of the elements making it up are unified: there are no strange discrepancies in music, the visuals have flavour and a consistent style they're going for all the way through and from start to finish, the story is a complete whole.

They basically have the open world of Frontiers without the pop-in, the fantastic level design of the Generations stages and a further refined version of the power-up system introduced via Wisps back in Colours (latest variation of which was in Superstars), but outfitted for Shadow.

And all I can say is that I think they should flesh out all of the characters exactly like this. I at least want to see this treatment for Tails, Amy and Knuckles. I think Blaze is my own big wish for cool 3D gameplay in this style because I think it just has the potential to be incredibly fun.

Keep Sonic as a template as with Shadow, but give them abilities fitting to their characters, making them variations of Sonic (which the best playable versions of them have basically been since the start).

My big worry here is the lesson they might take away from Shadow Generations, which is to keep shoving Shadow into everything without ryhme and reason now because that's just what "people like" now.

I can easily see his character and gameplay style eventually fall victim to poor implementation (and on the side, writing), just like the end point of all cool and successful Sonic gameplay styles: Adventure gameplay, Modern Sonic, Classic Sonic and the Wisps, to name a few.

I hope the lesson is to do cool stuff like this with all characters, maybe go back to doing multiple stories with multiple gameplay styles with solid effort put into all of them, not make the franchise consist entirely of Shadow games.

Maybe make Shadow one of several gameplay styles next to Sonic in the next game and even use what they've done here to further refine Sonic's gameplay?

To me it really stood out how smoothly some of Shadow's abilities seemed to work.

Above all, I know this game skyrocketed on my list of to-gets after seeing some of those levels.

Circumstances in the past few days actually also maybe have made it possible for me to get it earlier than I thought, but it's still pretty pricey for me currently.

Eventually, for sure, though.

The impressions are so much better than I ever thought they would be and the game just looks so much better from footage than I ever thought it would.

Things I want to see from Amy in the movie verse (whenever she appears):

1. An outfit that references her Classic and Modern designs.

I've seen plenty of fanart with amazing depictions of what Movie Amy could look like, and I've done some outfits myself. I believe she could benefit from a perfect blend of her Classic and Modern outfits.

2. A more toned down crush on Sonic.

This requires a bit more explanation: to be clear, I'm not asking for Amy's character to have a complete rewrite, but her character does need to be revised. If they tone down the most common complaint about her - the fangirl persona - then there's nothing else to change and no fear of her being turned into a completely different character.

Of course, that's not to say they can't have her crushing on Sonic - but it should be more subtle in order to work. I'm imagining Amy (like from the games) wanting to better herself and prove herself useful to the team. She has a big heart, and a hammer. Over time she develops a crush on Sonic - but because she values their friendship and his respect so much, she hides it. There can be brief moments when this crush shows through, but ultimately she shakes it off to focus on what's more important. It's a one side crush, just like the games, but less on the nose and more solemn.

3. Have an explanation for her hammer.

Either this is a chaos power she has, and she can conjure it from nowhere. Or it's a crafted weapon she carries on her back. Either works and has fun potential.
