The Great Sword of Dunvegan
Tumblr media
No, it’s not Excalibur but the great Sword of Dunvegan, and it’s over 500 years old. 🗡️
This sword was a weapon of great power, made by the MacLeods of Suardal who were the Blacksmiths to the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
A claymore (Claidheamh Mòr, or “great sword" in Gaelic) such as this would have cost a small fortune and was typically used by Clan Chiefs.
Its real power was in its length and weight.
The blade is three feet (approximately 90cm) in length and, together with its weight, would have been lethal in a double-handed swing.
The sword is difficult to date. Its features suggest the late 15th or early 16th century AD.
A depiction of it on the tombstone of Alasdair Crotach MacLeod (1450 – 1547), the 8th Clan Chief, tells us it cannot be dated after 1528 AD.
What makes this sword even more fascinating is that it is made with Scottish steel instead of German steel.

Highlander Rewatch Episode 1.1
Tumblr media
Join me for a daily(ish) blogging of what was once my favourite show.
Once upon a time, long, long ago, my first love was Highlander (the TV series). I've wanted to rewatch it for a long time, but it isn't streaming anywhere and the box of battered VHS tapes that I’d recorded off of cable have been lost to the sands of time. Thankfully, Youtube has come through, hopefully I can piece together all the episodes in the right order.
If I'm going to watch 119 episodes of this show (Wow, that's a lot of TV, I forgot how long TV seasons used to be), what better way to experience this than to share my random thoughts on the random-thought-sharing website?
*Note, this won’t be a live-blogging so much as a collection of thoughts after I watch each episode.
More below the cut in case anyone is worried about spoilers for a…checks notes…oh, god, that can’t be right…32 year old show. Anyway...there can be only one! Let’s go.
Episode 1.1 The Gathering
IMBD Description: Immortal Duncan MacLeod leaves tranquility when kinsman Connor returns and evil Immortal Slan Quince challenges him to a battle. [It's very funny that Slan has a last name in the credits, because it definitely didn't come up as he was threatening and swording at people. I'm also dying at "leaves tranquility" as a description that's supposed to mean...anything.]
Tranquility or not, let's watch this thing.
I appreciate an opening scene that transitions from giggly sex to this:
Tumblr media
Yes. Good. No notes.
Am also belatedly realizing how imprinted I am on Mac’s nicely styled long hair and intense eyes.
Oh, I forgot how much blatant misogyny there was in the 90s. Well, we’re just going to have to work through it together.
Christopher Lambert is not a great actor, but there’s something subtly charming about him. Having him in the first episode really transitions the series nicely from the movie, even if everyone’s acting is a bit stiff.
Tumblr media
They really laid the groundwork for Tessa’s death in season 2 so early with the conversation between her and Mac about him outliving all of his past lovers. [Side note: I was enraged by her death at the time and nearly quit watching, let’s see how I feel this time around.] I love how spunky Tessa is from the get-go, not letting Mac call the shots, even though he tries to. And both of them being ride or die for each other is why I was so into the show at the time. Too bad it ended up being the latter. (Can you tell I’m still bitter?)
Tumblr media
Ritchie is such a punk kid. In my head he was a bit older, and a lot more annoying than he seems this time around. Now he seems more true to how a 17 year old would be if he discovered a bunch of immortal swordspeople living among us.
Tumblr media
The flashback scenes are another area that I’m potentially a bit yikes about - very interested to see how they hold up.
Love the ending of the episode where we’re apparently not going to talk about Mac running away or anything like that? Now everything is fine? Truly a Gen-X style resolution we can all be proud of.
I have skipped over all the swordplay, but rest assured there was a lot of it, and the good guys prevailed.
Tumblr media
On to episode 1.2!

I am obsessed with the delivery of this line 😆 MacLeod Andrews does so much for this series!
[video ID: a recording of a computer screen, with the audiobook for “Wind” pulled up. MacLeod Andrews narrates the following conversation between Nighteart and Sunbeam:
"'Mother can be difficult, but I was happy when I was a kit, and I want to raise kits with you, Nightheart...' 🥺
'You will have... 🤩 The Most... 🤩 Be-YOO-tiful 🤩 kits,' Nightheart purred." End video ID.]

I would pay good money to see those calves in the MacLeod tartan. Yellow, red, black - the venomous snake color scheme makes it pop.

Highlander (1986)

sometimes the SPN HC Lore that my Research(tm) digs up is fascinating and canon-altering. Sometimes its fluffy and sweet (Cas loves crocodiles. I'm never going to be able to un-know that). Other times.... its just kind of random
Sam & Dean are related to/share an ancestor with This Campbell, Specifically
the reason that this matters at ALL is due to the truly unhinged amount of Campbells that specifically went into folklore/myth studies irl. For that reason, I get the feeling that MOST Campbells in the spn universe are in some way connected to this, butttt J.G. here is the closest match to a direct relative imho, for a couple reasons.

On the 18th January 2009 just a few weeks before the completion of a £4m restoration project, Raasay House was severely damaged by fire.
The history of Raasay and the house here is intermingled with The McLeod Clan, of which my own family were septs to on the Island, and quartermasters to the family. . A clan house, home to the Macleod Chief of Raasay, has stood on or near the present site from as early as the 1500's, but the original clan house was burnt to the ground, torched by government troops after Culloden. Like many families there were MacLeods on both sides that day, the Raasay branch were on the Jacobite side. Perhaps the most famous of the clan in modern times is Calum Macleod, who single handily famously built Calum's Road on the Island over ten years, with little more than a shovel, a pick and a wheelbarrow.
Anyway, back to the house. Since rebuilding started on 1747 the present Raasay House history has been recorded right through to today.
In 1773 Dr Samuel Johnson and James Boswell made their historic journey to the Western Isles and were guests of the Macleod chief at Raasay House, but by 1843 the last Laird, John Macleod, left the house and emigrated with his family to Australia, the house was old three years later to a George Rainy from London and changed hands again in 1872-4.By 1746 it was in the hands of It was sold to Henry Wood who added the ornate Georgian-style wings and frontage to the house. It changed hands twice more before being converted into a sporting hotel around 1937, very successfully at first, with many wealthy guests. It closed it's doors in 1960.
Another 3 decades passed under different owners and the house was used as an Adventure centre and Outdoor centre, during which little maintenance work was carried out and the building started to deteriorate, it was finally sold to the Raasay House Community Company in 2007. A multi-million-pound project to renovate and refurbish Raasay House commenced a year later.
Fire caused damage to all but the west wing in January 2009, just as the house was about to be reopened but thanks to a lottery grant the house rose from the ashes to what it is today, the house retains many of its historical features which were painstakingly restored. Today, still owned by the community it has returned to it's use as a hotel and has a four and a half star rating out of five on TripAdvisor.
As you can see from the pics it is a beautiful building, and the views from the house over to the Isle of Skye are stunning.
