The Great Sword of Dunvegan
Tumblr media
No, it’s not Excalibur but the great Sword of Dunvegan, and it’s over 500 years old. 🗡️
This sword was a weapon of great power, made by the MacLeods of Suardal who were the Blacksmiths to the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
A claymore (Claidheamh Mòr, or “great sword" in Gaelic) such as this would have cost a small fortune and was typically used by Clan Chiefs.
Its real power was in its length and weight.
The blade is three feet (approximately 90cm) in length and, together with its weight, would have been lethal in a double-handed swing.
The sword is difficult to date. Its features suggest the late 15th or early 16th century AD.
A depiction of it on the tombstone of Alasdair Crotach MacLeod (1450 – 1547), the 8th Clan Chief, tells us it cannot be dated after 1528 AD.
What makes this sword even more fascinating is that it is made with Scottish steel instead of German steel.

Am Bratach Sith (The Fairy Flag of Dunvegan) is one of the clan MacLeod’s most treasured possessions.
Probably from Syria or Rhodes and woven of silk in the 4th century AD, legend has it that this sacred clan banner has miraculous powers. When unfurled in battle, the clan would invariably snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The traditional tales about its origin can be split into two distinct themes – Fairies and Crusaders. Fairy stories are difficult to relate to fact and often come about as a substitute for forgotten truth.
The connection with the Crusades can be linked to the only scientific information we have about the Fairy Flag’s origin. When Sir Reginald MacLeod of MacLeod (27th Chief) had the Fairy Flag conserved and mounted in its sealed frame by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, he listened while Mr Wace (one of the V&A’s experts) set out his theory about its origins, including the historical evidence that the Norseman Harald Hardrada (one of the early ancestors of the Chiefs of MacLeod), while on an expedition to plunder the pilgrim routes of the Middle East, had brought a famous banner back to Britain where he was killed in 1066.
Reginald listened politely and said: “Mr Wace, you may believe that, but I know that it was given to my ancestor by the fairies”, to which Mr Wace replied “Sir Reginald, I bow to your superior knowledge”.

🧚🏻‍♀️
Waittt omg this reminds me of an objectively crazy piece of youngestdaughtersyndrome lore but its kind of long so im putting it under a cut ....
So like way back in the day (like wayyyy back im talking 4-7th century) in scotland-- and this is the way my great grandma tells it so who knows if its the official story-- there was the macleod clan of castle dunvegan. And this kid loses his favorite hound right? So hes searching for him everywhere, far and wide, just wandering over the moors for days until he comes to a bridge just sitting in a clearing, totally purposeless like not crossing over anything, and he hears a bark. And hes dead certain that its his dog so he searches the surrounding forest around the bridge but he cant find his dog. Unthinkingly he crosses the bridge and all the sudden a beautiful girl is in front of him with his dog and hes like. Thats my dog. And shes like no its my dog wtf also youre in the land of the fae and if your dog crosses back over he'll die immediately so he needs to stay here and besides i love him so much. The son very quickly realizes that hes like mega fucked and hes standing in front of a faery princess and shes so so beautiful and she has his favorite dog. And because that shit used to fly hes like Well if you marry me and come live at my home you can have the dog and shes like yayyyy okay <3 so they get married and some years pass and they have a baby. At that point shes like i have to return to my people bc im a princess and they need me but im leaving our son with you. Take care of him or im going to be so mad. Then off she goes and the macleods have a banquet to cheer the son up (its not working) and the nursemaid slips off to have a drink and a bit of chat, as one does. The baby kicks off the blankets though because hes a baby and the window is open so he gets cold and he starts to cry. Now the princess is all the way in the realm of the fae but she hears him crying and flys over to the castle into her sons room. And objectively hes well taken care of so shes not really mad. Besides, she loves her human husband and the baby, so she just tucks her son in with a scarf or something of hers. At this point the nursemaid comes in and is like oh shit youre back? And the wifes like not really but keep the blanket ive wrapped him in because if you wave it you can either cure a cattle plague or summon extra fighters in battle. Also you can only wave it three times so like be choosy about it. And then she disappeared and was never seen again but the baby grew up to be a valued member of the clan and whatnot. And supposedly my mothers side of the family is that faery babys descendants. The story is up for dispute as all folktales are but the fairy flag is real u can look it up 👍

~ “This stunning Claymore, (Claidheamh M dir, or ‘Great Sword’ in Gaelic), more than 500 years old called the ‘Great Sword of Dunvegan’, is preserved and displayed on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, at Dunvegan Castle, home of the ‘famous’ McLeod clan since the 13th century. The sword is dated around the late XV or early XVI century, indicative of its presumed depiction on the tombstone of the 8th Clan leader Alasdair Crotach MacLeod, dated 1528. The blade is three feet (about 90 cm) long, and the steel it was forged with, normally imported from Germany, in this portfolio was manufactured in Scotland. For the forging, it appears to have been manufactured by the MacLeod of Suardal, blacksmiths of Dunvegan. The Isle of Skye, or simply Skye (/s k aɪ/; Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach or Eilean a' Che ile; Scottish: Isle of Skye), is the largest and northernmost of the largest islands in the Inner Hebrids of Scotland. The island's penis radiate from a mountainous centre dominated by Cuillin, whose rocky slopes offer some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the country. Dunvegan Castle is Scotland's oldest continuously inhabited castle. Since 1933 it has been open to the public, leading to a substantial increase in tourism in the area. The castle has been visited by numerous prominent personalities, including writers Walter Scott and Samuel Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Emperor Akihito of Japan. Clan MacLeod (/m Mac ̪ɣ k l a / d/; Scottish Gaelic: Clann Mhic Le çid [ jkhl Cã aton n v coçkj ətj]) is a Scottish Highlands clan associated with the Isle of Skye. There are two main branches of the clan: the MacLeod of Harris and Dunvegan, whose head is MacLeod of MacLeod, are known in Gaelic as Siol Tormoid (’seed of Tormod’); the MacLeod clan of Lewis and Raasay, whose head is MacLeod of Lewes (Scottish Gaelic: Mac Ghille Chaluim), known in Gaelic as Siol Torcaill (’seed of Torcall’). Both branches claim to be descended from Le olod, who lived in the 13th century.“ ~

Last Names With Fairy Lore
Tumblr media
There are many clans and last names with fairylore, and when I come across them in my research, I try to remember to write them down. The list below are all the names that I have found so far.
Macphee, MacFee, MacFie, MacPhie
According to legend, Macphee, MacFee, MacFie, and MacPhie all came from the name Mac Dhubhshith (dubh-sith), which means “black fairy.”
“A family in North Uist is known as ‘Dubh-sith,’ Black fairy, from a tradition that the family have been familiar with the fairies in their fairy flights and secret migrations.” Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900],
Tumblr media
Munroe’s
Vougha is another name for Kelpies, which a family of Munroe’s are said to come from.
“And it is said that a family of Munroes had, many generations ago, married with the Vougha of Beann na Caltuinn, Their descendants had manes and tails till within the last four generations.” Popular tales of the West Highlands
Tumblr media
Pellings
“Pellings” supposedly came from the name “Penelop,” which is a fairy that that is in their bloodline.
“There are several persons and even families who are reputed to be descended from these people …. These children [Penelope’s] and their descendants, they say, were called Pellings, a word corrupted from their mother’s name, Penelope. The late Thomas Rowlands, Esq., of Caerau, in Anglesey, the father of the late Lady Bulkeley, was a descendant of this lady, if it be true that the name Pellings came from her; and there are still living several opulent and respectable people who are known to have sprung from the Pellings. The best blood in my own veins is this fairy’s.’” Celtic Folklore: Welsh and Manx (Volume 1 of 2) by Sir John Rhys (1901)
Tumblr media
Macpherson
The black chanter of Clan Chattan was supposedly gifted to a Macpherson by a fairy admirer. Read more about it here.
Tumblr media
‘Feadan dubh Chlanna Chatain,’ the black chanter of the Clan Chattan, is said to have been given to a famous Macpherson piper by a fairy woman who loved him." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900]
Tumblr media
 Mackay
A Mackay was also given something from a fairy sweetheart; though this time it was a flag. Sadly, I can’t find any further information about this flag.
"The Mackays have a flag said to have been given to a Mackay by a fairy sweetheart." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900],
Tumblr media
Macleod
The Macleods claim two fairy items, the fairy flag in Dunvegan, and a chanter called “The Silver Chanter of the Fairy Woman.” There is an audio recording from 1969 that mentions the fairy flag here. This is an item you can still go see at Dunvegan Castle.
Tumblr media
"The famous fairy flag at Dunvegan is said to have been given to a Macleod of Macleod by a fairy woman. The Mac-Crimmons of Bororaig, the famous pipers of the Macleods of Macleod, had a chanter called ‘Sionnsair airgid na mna sithe,’ the silver chanter of the fairy woman." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900],
Tumblr media
MacCrimmon
John MacCrimmon was given a chanter by a fairy sweetheart. There is also an audio recording about this from 1954 here, though it is not in English.
"As ‘Iain Og,’ young John MacCrimmon, was practising in ‘Slochd nam piobairean,’ hollow of the pipers, at Bororaig, the lovely fair Thy beauty and the music of thy pipe, Have brought a fairy sweetheart to thee, I hand thee now the silver chanter, That will be melodious ever under thy fingers. The story of young John and his fairy sweetheart is very fine and highly poetic." Carmina Gadelica, Volume 2, by Alexander Carmicheal, [1900],
Tumblr media
MacNamara, O’Sullivan, O’Flaherty, MacKerra, Gossocks, McVeaghs.
O’Flaherty and O’Sullivan families of Kerry, MacNamaras of Clare are all said to be the offspring of mermaids.
"So, too, did the O’Flaherty and O’Sullivan families of Kerry and the MacNamaras of ClareStrange and Secret Peoples: Fairies and Victorian Consciousness" By Carole G. Silver  (2000)
"A MacKerra of MacGhirston, in Galloway, married a merman; another Galloway family, the Gossocks, and a family in Sutherland, the McVeaghs, are held to be the descendants of a mermaid and a fisherman" Sea enchantress; the tale of the mermaid and her kin by Benwell, Gwen (1961)
Tumblr media
MacCodrum
The entire MacCodrum clan of the Outer Hebrides claim to be descendants of a selkie bride.
"…while the entire MacCodrum clan of the Outer Hebrides, known as “The MacCodrums of the Seals.” claimed to be the offspring of a union between a selkie and a fisherman. In this case, the sign of preternatural parentage was not delicate beauty but an hereditary horny growth between the fingers that made MacCodrum hands resemble flippers." Strange and Secret Peoples: Fairies and Victorian Consciousness By Carole G. Silver  (2000)
There is also a MacCodrum who saw a ghost (audio recording from 1966 here)
Tumblr media
Urqhart
A family of Urqharts are also descendants of selkies.
"...the Folk-Lore Society, in 1895, studied magic lantern slides taken of Baubi Urqhart of the Shetland Islands. On the basis of family stories and a seallike appearance, Baubi claimed to be the great-great-granddaughter of a selkie captured by her ancestor." Strange and Secret Peoples: Fairies and Victorian Consciousness By Carole G. Silver  (2000)
Tumblr media
Mor
The Mor’s can never be drown thanks to a promise made with a mermaid
"They acquired this immunity through the foresight of their father, James Mor, who in 1883 was still living to tell the tale’. He found a mermaid’s belt, and withheld it until she promised that none of his family should ever be drowned." Sea enchantress; the tale of the mermaid and her kin by Benwell, Gwen (1961)
As well as that, a Dòmhnall Mòr was constantly lifted by the fairies
“The fairy host used to lift Dòmhnall Mòr. He would have to leave the cèilidh house every night. He went to Canada, but found them waiting for him there. He never got away from them.” Audio Recording Link
Tumblr media
MacVurichs
MacVurichs of Uist have something to do with the supernatural, but the recording is in gaelic and I can’t understand it.
Tumblr media
 MacArthur
According to this recording from 1969 there is a certain place that no MacArthur should pass by. Why? Well, according to the story, Neil MacArthur was on his way home when he saw a woman he thought he knew. He put his arms around her, only to realize she had no nostrils (a washerwoman description). He was compelled by her magic to meet with her over six months, and would have died on his last visit, but his mother-in-law placed protective charms on him.
"The woman put a curse on Neil’s descendants. She said that evil would happen to them if they passed a certain place after sunset. The contributor says that the MacArthurs heed this warning to the present day [1969]" AN ENCOUNTER WITH A FAIRY WASHERWOMAN
Tumblr media
Laings
The Laings are supernaturally good workers because one of their ansestors was trapped in a fairy mound. While there, she was forced to bake until a fairy helped her escape. She left with the new ability.
There is an audio recording from 1978 here.
Tumblr media
Widwick
After helping deliver a baby she did not at the time know was a fairy, a midwife in Yell named Merran Widwick accidently got fairy oinment in her eye (giving her the ability of second sight) and was blinded in that eye. Audio recording here, and another here.
Merran Windwick, only recently deceased [in 1972], was a great midwife and healer who lived in a remote area of North Yell near high banks [cliffs]. One night she returned home late and was sitting down to her supper when there was a tap at the door. Her sickly daughter answered it to a strange man. Merran cursed the people who were annoying her so late, but the man said that he lived not far from her and persuaded her to come to help his wife, who was having a child. He took her to the clifftop and made the stone rise to reveal a staircase. She went into the fairy dwelling and delivered the child. The fairy had no money to pay her, but instead offered her long life or knowledge beyond all understanding. She chose knowledge and from then on knew everything that was to pass. Years later she went to a roup [public auction] to sell a cow and saw the stranger again. He asked her which eye she saw him with. She told him and he blew in the eye; she lost her sight in that eye. link
Tumblr media
 Coutts
The grandfather of Maalie Coutts lived in Mid Yell found a fairy child (of a trow) and took it home, but had to release it when it threatened to blow down the house with wind.
Link to audio recording here.
Tumblr media
Harker
Henry Harker obtained an endless fairy ointment, but the magic failed when money was charged for it.
Audio recording link here.
Tumblr media
Sgrob
The fairy host used to lift Niall Sgrob and they once asked him to kill a girl.
They used to take Niall Sgrob from Barra with them. He would get a feeling when they were coming and he had to go with them. One night a girl was milking at a house which Niall often visited. The cow she was milking dropped dead. The next night Niall Sgrob said he had killed the cow. The fairy host had asked him to kill the girl with a fairy needle. He killed the cow instead. The host saw the blood and thought the girl was dead. He told them they should always shut the door when milking. link
Tumblr media
Buidhe
A Buidhe went into a fairy hill, and was trapped there for seven years until another human rescued him.
"Greusaiche Buidhe went to get whisky for a wedding and went into a fairy hill. He was there for seven years, until another man rescued him. He thought he had only been there a short while." link
Tumblr media
That’s it! Did you spy your name or clan on there? Sadly, I am part of the “has no fairylore” club haha.

Isle of Skye, Scotland, 1544
Rory MacLeod also known as the Lion of Skye being the commander of the MacLeod warriors as he has not had an easy life. First he takes his father’s heir’s place at Solway Moss where he was captured by the English and lives in prison with three of his enemies for over a year. However his father was dead, unknown to him and his brother the current laird acted like he was already dead. His brother Jamie was cruel and selfish and acted like Rory was already dead! It was the same for all the prisoners no one brought them any provisions that would make prison life easier! No food, blankets or coins, they became brothers realizing England was their true enemy and eventually escaped together.
Rory meets Sara MacDonald not realizing it was his disloyal brothers betrothed. A lass who had a talent for healing and a love for dogs. However, his disloyal brother Jamie already had a mistress, was a liar and only cared about his own selfish desires. Afterall his father was dead and Rory did not hear from anyone in over a year in that stinking prison. His brother acted as if Rory died too, not expecting for him to return to their MacLeod family at Dunvegan Castle.
Rory was very disappointed when he discovered he was attracted to his new almost sister-in-law. Except after the wedding ceremony was over Sara noticed something was wrong and all The MacDonald warriors were missing. Then the MacDonald clan were trying to lock them in the church and burn them to death! They thought they could steal The MacLeod holdings and lands with this mass murder! Walter MacDonald had been a horrible father Sara’s entire life calling her ugly because of a birthmark. He even asked her to become their spy and steal the fairy flag once she was married to the MacLeod Laird.
At first Rory felt Sara was part of the MacDonalds plan to do a mass murder of the entire MacLeod clan. He destroys all evidence of a marriage until he realizes she was trying to save them. For this her MacDonald Chieftain was furious and just abandoned Sara feeling she betrayed them! The last thing Chief Walter MasDonald wanted was peace with the MacLeod’s even with a marriage alliance. He always told her how ugly she was not any good for him in alliance knowing she would never be with his allies but good enough with their enemies!
The MacDonald chief abandons her knowing she would be blamed especially after calling her The Flame of Dunscaith
to take the punishments of all his cruel, deceptive, murderous, intentions no matter what the cost! Thinking he could own MacLeod land and holdings, especially the Fairy Flag! Her father knew she had warned the MacLeods and felt she had betrayed him and her clan! This MacDonald Chief and Sara’s father never showed her any kind of love or emotion. She only stayed there to care for her twelve year old sister with a spinal condition. Another female child he rejects.
Now her wedded husband Jamie MacLeod is between life and death. However the attraction between Rory and Sara just grows, as Rory is confused having been betrayed by a MacDonald lass he cared for in the past. However it took over a decade for his MacLeod clan to trust him again. Do Rory and Sara have a chance at a HEA? Furthermore, will these feelings they have for each other start a war? Read and find out!
My go-to-author Heather MacLeod pens another brilliant book I could not put down. I love when true history is weaved with a fictional romance that is always phenomenal. I am a big fan of the real MacLeod Clan with the fairy flag that still exists at Dunvegan castle today. It is in the Isle of Skye, in Scotland with other treasured artifacts that are truly magical. An area of Scotland that I have visited with the breathtaking fairy pools, enchanting gardens and lovely hiking area too. As for this reason the book had me mesmerized right from the start. I absolutely loved Rory and Sara’s story and look forward to the next book in this new series! It is definitely a book readers do not want to miss!

New verse added! Historical
Asriel Macleod
Laird of Clan Macleod
Born: 1700
Home: Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Clan Motto: "Hold Fast"
Clan Symbol: The Bull
Early Life
Asriel Macleod was born into a time of great change and turmoil in the Scottish Highlands. As the firstborn son of the previous laird, Alastair Macleod, Asriel was groomed from a young age to assume leadership of Clan Macleod. His childhood was steeped in the rich traditions and history of his ancestors, and he was educated in the arts of war, diplomacy, and clan governance.
Ascension to Laird
In 1725, when Asriel was 25, his father died in a skirmish with the rival Clan Campbell. Thrust into leadership, Asriel quickly proved himself a capable and determined laird. He avenged his father's death by leading a successful raid against Clan Campbell, which earned him the respect and loyalty of his people.
Reign as Laird
Under Asriel's rule, Clan Macleod has seen both prosperity and conflict. Asriel is known for his strong yet fair leadership. He has fortified Dunvegan Castle, ensuring it remains an impregnable bastion for his clan. Asriel has also worked to improve the lives of his clansmen by encouraging agricultural advancements and trade with neighboring clans and the Lowlands.
The Jacobite Rising
In 1745, Asriel made the momentous decision to support the Jacobite cause led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as Bonnie Prince Charlie. The promise of a restored Stuart monarchy resonated deeply with Asriel, who believed it could bring stability and prosperity to Scotland.
Rallying his clansmen, Asriel joined the Jacobite forces, bringing with him the strength and loyalty of Clan Macleod. His decision was not without its risks—supporting the Jacobite cause meant facing the might of the Hanoverian government and the possibility of severe repercussions should the uprising fail.
After Culloden
Asriel faces increasing challenges as the Jacobite rising progresses. The early successes of the Jacobite army boost morale, but the reality of prolonged warfare soon takes its toll. The Battle of Culloden in April 1746 marks a decisive and devastating defeat for the Jacobite forces.
In the aftermath of Culloden, Asriel must navigate the dangerous and uncertain terrain of a defeated rebellion. The Hanoverian government is relentless in its pursuit of retribution, and Asriel's leadership and cunning are tested as he seeks to protect his people from the brutal reprisals that follow.
Physique:
Asriel stands tall and commanding, with a sturdy and muscular build befitting a seasoned warrior and leader of Clan Macleod. His years of training and battle have honed his physique, giving him a formidable presence that commands respect and loyalty from his clansmen.
Facial Features:
His face is rugged and weathered, bearing the marks of a life spent outdoors and in the midst of conflict. Deep-set eyes, the colour of stormy seas, reflect a keen intelligence and unwavering determination. His brow is often furrowed in thought or in a stern expression that hints at the weight of responsibility he carries as laird.
Hair:
Asriel's hair, a dark shade of chestnut brown, is kept slightly longer than was fashionable in the courtly circles of Edinburgh or London but practical for a man leading his clan in the rugged Highlands. It falls in loose waves, often tousled from the wind that sweeps across the Isle of Skye.
Clothing:
He typically wears traditional Highland attire befitting his station: a finely tailored tartan plaid wrapped around his shoulders and belted at the waist, denoting his clan affiliation and status as laird. Beneath the plaid, a sturdy linen or wool shirt, sometimes adorned with intricate embroidery or clan brooches, speaks to his heritage and pride in his clan's traditions.
Accessories:
Around his neck, Asriel wears a pendant bearing the symbol of Clan Macleod—a stylized bull, crafted in silver, symbolizing strength and resilience. His attire is completed with leather boots that have been well-worn through years of riding and walking the rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands.
Demeanour:
In his bearing, Asriel exudes confidence and authority, tempered with a quiet strength and a sense of duty that is palpable to all who meet him. Despite the weight of leadership, there is warmth and kindness in his eyes when speaking with his family or trusted advisors, revealing the depth of his character beyond the battlefield.
