Am Bratach Sith (The Fairy Flag of Dunvegan) is one of the clan MacLeod’s most treasured possessions.
Probably from Syria or Rhodes and woven of silk in the 4th century AD, legend has it that this sacred clan banner has miraculous powers. When unfurled in battle, the clan would invariably snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The traditional tales about its origin can be split into two distinct themes – Fairies and Crusaders. Fairy stories are difficult to relate to fact and often come about as a substitute for forgotten truth.
The connection with the Crusades can be linked to the only scientific information we have about the Fairy Flag’s origin. When Sir Reginald MacLeod of MacLeod (27th Chief) had the Fairy Flag conserved and mounted in its sealed frame by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, he listened while Mr Wace (one of the V&A’s experts) set out his theory about its origins, including the historical evidence that the Norseman Harald Hardrada (one of the early ancestors of the Chiefs of MacLeod), while on an expedition to plunder the pilgrim routes of the Middle East, had brought a famous banner back to Britain where he was killed in 1066.
Reginald listened politely and said: “Mr Wace, you may believe that, but I know that it was given to my ancestor by the fairies”, to which Mr Wace replied “Sir Reginald, I bow to your superior knowledge”.

Our Lady Of Mysterious Ailments & The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle
books 2 & 3 in the Edinburgh Nights series
paranormal mystery set in a climate-ravaged future Scotland, plagued by ghosts and magic
follows a 15yo Black girl who’s finally gotten an in to learn scientific magic properly - but it turns out to be an unpaid internship, so she has to take more jobs delivering ghost messages and investigating mysteries to take care of her gran and little sister
in book 2 she’s investigating a strange illness centred on a magic school for boys
and in book 3 she’s attending a global magician conference held in a creepy castle - when someone’s murdered, and they’re locked in until she figures out the culprit
Zimbabwean magic, friendship, disabled characters, no romance (so far)
#The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle#Our Lady Of Mysterious Ailments#Edinburgh Nights#T.L. Huchu#The Library of the Dead#really enjoy this series!#the worldbuilding is very interesting - kinda combo climate-ravaged future but also in some aspects societally it feels kinda 1800s#(especially with the vibe of the mystery/paranormal elements)#I saw that the author (who is from Zimbabwe) describe it as ‘if edinburgh was a third world city’ which actually makes a lot of sense#Also I have to make the wendell & wild x lockwood & co comp again#I felt like book 2 was a little all over the place? I slightly lost track of the other-realms stuff lol#I really loved book 3 though - definitely more direct plot-wise#I like how it explores her journey through learning that the magic society is just as corrupt and shitty as anything else and maybe she#doesn't want it after all. as well as how the stress of everything is getting to her is causing panic attacks#love the scottish accent in the audiobooks!#so many interesting different supernatural elements. yay for sidhe in book 3 (tho only briefly)#hold on. do the book covers reflect the colour of her locs. (ok not quite for book one which is usually blue but there is a green variant)#ok I did say no romance but also I can’t tell if I’m just imagining Something between ropa & priya bc in book 3……they had some moments.#I mean I enjoy them as platonic moments also but just noting here in case it DOES turn out to be intentional and something that happen??#also fair warning the promo for book four seems to spoil somehting that's not even in the blurb??#aroaessidhe 2024 reads

The Great Sword of Dunvegan
No, it’s not Excalibur but the great Sword of Dunvegan, and it’s over 500 years old. 🗡️
This sword was a weapon of great power, made by the MacLeods of Suardal who were the Blacksmiths to the MacLeods of Dunvegan.
A claymore (Claidheamh Mòr, or “great sword" in Gaelic) such as this would have cost a small fortune and was typically used by Clan Chiefs.
Its real power was in its length and weight.
The blade is three feet (approximately 90cm) in length and, together with its weight, would have been lethal in a double-handed swing.
The sword is difficult to date. Its features suggest the late 15th or early 16th century AD.
A depiction of it on the tombstone of Alasdair Crotach MacLeod (1450 – 1547), the 8th Clan Chief, tells us it cannot be dated after 1528 AD.
What makes this sword even more fascinating is that it is made with Scottish steel instead of German steel.

The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle by TL Huchu
★★★★★
Find the author here. Find the book here.
Pages: 378
Genre: YA Fantasy
Review:
Oh, Ropa, Ropa, Ropa! It was so interesting to try to see where it was going. Major twists and turns in the third installment of the series. I can't believe I have to wait til November for the next book in the series. It's like a Scottish Ghostbusters vibe and I am and will always be here for it.

Dunvegan castle
The gardens continue to be very wet but pretty. Although their paths meander back and forth a lot, which can make it a bit hard to tell how to get to a specific location.
I’m especially pleased to find a giant rhubarb growing here, allowing for an Arrietty moment.
The cafe also sells the BEST fruit scone I’ve ever had.
