So uh

I am an American who knows next to nothing about American universities, much less British ones.

As in I could maybe name five American universities off the top of my head and that's including both the one I go to now and the one I grew up really wanting to go to

But instead I can give you what I think each of them would do in college so here's that :)

(we're not worrying about money because Millard canonically has like. 20 different degrees)

Jacob wanted to do psychology and peculiar history. He does the former almost exclusively online and the latter with Millard, who did peculiar history again so that Jacob would do it with him.

Emma did photography. And metalsmithing, because they let her play with fire.

Millard is, as stated, doing peculiar history again, but at this point I'm decently sure Millard is trying to 100% degrees in peculiar studies and I wouldn't be surprised if eventually he did that with normal degrees as well.

Bronwyn got a degree in education and is very regularly a substitute teacher in the present as well as a teacher in loops, to give ymbrynes breaks when they need them.

Enoch did not want to go to college. However, funeral homes nowadays require degrees, and he did not have any other ideas as to what he could do as a job, and everyone else decided to at least try to have lives in the normal world and he didn't want to be left out.

Horace took as many fashion design classes as they would physically let him. He's gotten three degrees in fashion design. Just because.

Olive and Claire are babies I will accept them going to high school but they are not allowed to do college they're too little.

Hugh and Fiona did not do college. They started a farm.

Anyway I'm very grateful for the chance to work on something so (literally) novel that turned out to be so personal and serious, and I'm also grateful for the great guys at Encyclopocalypse, and for the incredible support and encouragement of Vincenzo Natali who I am very fortunate to know.

Before I even remembered that this was happening today, I woke up on this excellently chilly pre-Fall morning to a little treat I got myself in the mail:

It has cute little illos on the story title pages and everything. My dark secret is that I haven't read much horror fiction since I was a kid, and I was thinking about how if I had a time machine I would probably use it to go back to my childhood library to immerse myself in their seemingly endless stacks of pulp horror novels. I wasn't generally allowed to watch horror movies but I could read whatever I wanted, and the content of some of those books was just unimaginably sleazy and profane, the kind of thing you could never put in a movie because no one would let you and you could probably never afford it anyway. Of course a lot of them couldn't possibly live up to their great covers--that's sort of a lost art (and no it isn't just because of AI)--but it was still fun to find out.

This is my long way of asking you, John Q. Public, what are your favorite works of horror fiction from before 1990 or so? And don't pick any Stephen King, please just assume that we have both enjoyed some King. Feel free to reblog with specific great covers if you can find them.

February Reading Recap

Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer. I didn't find a whole lot new in this book, as far as thinking through questions of how to deal with art made by people who have done things or hold opinions that one finds morally reprehensible, but it was a well-written and thoughtful probing of the subject nonetheless. I really appreciated the fact that Dederer was comfortable (or, if not comfortable then at least accepting) of coming to a place with no easy answers. rea

Stars of Chaos: vol. 1 by Priest. I'm not sucked into this one yet, but I am intrigued by it enough that I'm going to keep reading. I haven't hooked into the main relationship, and it hasn't had the same level of delightful banter (at least, as yet) that I have enjoyed in other Priest novels I've read, but I do have volume 2 sitting on my shelf and I'm looking forward to reading it.

System Collapse by Martha Wells. I find that I've liked the early Murderbot books a lot more than the later ones, and this one unfortunately continued that trend. I don't think the series has overstayed its welcome for me yet - I'll probably continue to read it, at least for now - but I find myself losing interest.

Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. I said I was going to reread it and I did! And it didn't blow me away in quite the same way I remember it doing when I read it the first time around several years ago, but I still really enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it enough this time around (and was still compelled enough by the worldbuilding, which I do remember being a big part of what stood out to me), that I plan to reread the rest of the series as well. But while, again, it didn't blow me away the way I remember, I would say that I generally recommend it, particularly as a fantasy that is doing some things different.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Manhua): vol. 5 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. I am only and specifically reading the volumes of the manhua that have Yi City in it, so I'm pretty much exclusively assessing this based on my Yi City feelings. And while overall I feel like the art style isn't working for me in a way that is impacting my ability to really get into it there was at least one panel that really conveyed something and made me Feel Things, so it gets credit for that. I am enjoying the experience of doing Yi City in a whole new format, though, that's enjoyable for the sheer "getting to do Yi City, again, but in a different medium this time" reason.

We Are Satellites by Sarah Pinker. I read this book for a book club I'm in and I found it rather too didactic and the ending a little too pat. The family dynamics were strongly written and I sort of feel like Pinker could've written a stronger book that was just about a family without the part about New and Suspect Technology. I wouldn't even say that I necessarily disagree with the points I think she's making in this book, but I would say that it went a little too hard and a little too obviously on making those points.

Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. I liked this one and particularly as of the last...idk, five pages or so, I'm so on board for what comes next. I am promised that it gets even weirder and given that it was already fairly weird...I'm fascinated by the worldbuilding here, and the conceit of the Enlightenment-style contrasted with the future setting is a fun one. I'm looking forward to more.

Ring by Koji Suzuki. I was neither scared by this book (though perhaps I was ruined by knowing the whole thing more or less beat for beat) and did not particularly enjoy the experience of reading it, and then the part where Sadako was revealed to be...genderweird? somehow? unclear to me what the author was going for exactly, sort of tanked it for me. I probably will not be reading the rest of the series unless I get truly desperate for horror to read.

Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler. I don't know that I'd say this was the highest quality fantasy I've read recently but it might be the new-to-me one I've liked the best in a while. It was a lot of fun, very fast-moving, and I was intrigued enough by the entire set-up that I pretty much immediately put the second book on hold at the library after finishing this one. Maybe it's just been too long since I read a new-to-me fantasy book that really grabbed me, but I liked this one rather a lot and even if it was maybe more "fun" than "good" I'm still calling that enough to give this one a loose recommendation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 launches April 24 - Gematsu

Turn-based RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on April 24, publisher Kepler Interactive and developer Sandfall Interactive announced. Pre-orders are now available. It will also be available via Game Pass.

In today’s presentation, Sandfall Interactive shared details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s development origins, plus several new gameplay features sure to intrigue fans looking forward to the game’s upcoming release. Filmed on location at Sandfall Interactive’s studio in Montpellier, France, several members of the development team shared more detail on the game’s emotional story, stunning art direction inspired by Belle Epoque France, and its innovative reactive turn-based combat gameplay, which infuses traditional RPG mechanics with real-time defensive and offensive abilities. Additionally, the team revealed brand-new characters players will encounter during their adventure: the friendly, yet bloodthirsty, Monoco (voiced by Rich Keeble) and the larger-than-life Esquie (voiced by Maxence Cazorla). Monoco the Gestral joins the Expedition as a fully playable character, bringing his own unique playstyle to battles by transforming himself into the enemies the party encounters and using their abilities against them, while Esquie is an altogether more unusual character that players will befriend and use to discover the game’s explorable world. Throughout the game, players will unlock more abilities with Esquie, letting the Expedition climb aboard and traverse, swim, and soar across the game’s newly revealed overworld map. Reminiscent of classic RPGs that inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33‘s turn-based gameplay, the world map gives players freedom to explore various new locations and secrets on their path to destroy the Paintress. Outside of rich level-based environments like Ancient Sanctuary and the Gestral Village, the overworld has unique discoverable caves and bespoke locations hosting challenging optional battles and side quests, providing extensive opportunities for players to test their mettle and master the game’s deep and rewarding character building mechanics. Trollhunters Funko Pops & Blind Box Minis

This will be the last post today. Remember if you ever have a question or want to see something specific just drop an ask!

In this Funko toy catalogue from 2017 there is an image showcasing the silhouettes previewing what we now know is the blind box figures.

If you compare it to the finalised designs by Nena Ijiomah who created the final sculpts you might notice the a few changes. Jim had an additional action pose and even more surprisingly Strickler at one point had wings. It's very likely one Jim was removed for numbers and Strickler much like troll form Nomura's legs were changed to make the figure less fragile given they'd be rattling around in a box. I have a blind box Kerrigan whose head and wings snapped off in transit so honestly? It'd be a very valid concern. Still, it's interesting they had thought about it before logistics got in the way.

[/edit] Since posting @seekingcylem / Emily Baldado, the render artist, happened to spot this thread (!!) which was an unexpected turn of events. You can find a little more about their creation here.

As a bonus there's a group of collectors who like picking up the prototype molds for Funkos including these blind box versions. In light of that have this Nomura:

Next up the more classically shaped Funko Pop figures! Thanks to websites covering the 2017 Toy Fair we have a production image of these guys including of all things a concept art hatless gnome.

These like the action figures were colour adjusted before release including adding blush to Claire. Jim with the Amulet is sometimes flagged as a special edition (Marked by that yellow sticker) though only in certain countries and doesn't seem to effect the price too much..

There are however two exclusives that can be trickier to track down. Stone AAAARRRGGHH is from Funko Fall 2017 Con and some photos have a more blotchy patterning for some reason.

The other exclusive is the snazzy Eclipse Jim from New York Comic Con 2017 and can be fairly scarce these days.

Here's a prototype gnome too for good measure.

Chapter Four

It’s so awkward. It’s as though both Liam and I have forgotten to make conversation. As we walk down the beach together I glance around me, making sure that nobody else can see us, especially not Kelly or Claire, because I know if they could they would be compiling a list of all the things I have been doing wrong so that they can ambush me with it tomorrow morning. 

We walk in near silence until the sounds and lights of the pub have long vanished into the distance behind us, and I’m stressed now. I feel like I should be saying something. Is he waiting for me to say something? He probably is. I haven’t been very good at starting conversations all night, maybe it’s my turn now and I didn’t even realise it, but before I can think of something to say he asks me: “Do you want to sit down over there?”

There is a path through the dunes that leads back into the village and snakes over a golf course en route. The opening to it is a little half moon shape in the dunes, naturally framed by the marram grass, a gentle incline providing a comfortable place to sit while shaded from the wind. We crouch down together there, and I see that the circling beam of a lighthouse is clear from our place on the sand. Its brazen light pierces through the darkness towards me and then vanishes again in an instant, leaving only the ghostly glow of the moon on the shore. 

“There’ll be a full moon in a few days.” I say, partially to myself, partially because I’m now desperate to finally say something out loud. 

“Yep, you can tell by the tides.” Says Liam. “See how choppy they’ve become now? Once the moon is waning again you’ll see the tide still as anything.” He scratches the back of his head and breathes in. His breath is quivering a little bit. “Full moon is a good time to be out on the water if you’ve got a bit of experience. We try not to bring the surf juniors out there though – it’s a bit more risky.”

“I don’t know anything about surfing.” I admit. “We took a school tour to an activity camp one year. Everyone was so excited to try surfing there, but I couldn’t even get close to standing up on the board.”

“We’ve all been there. It just takes practice. That’s why I love doing the camps, you can really see the progress over the six weeks and kids are just so good at picking things up.”

“Sounds like you really like your job.”

“Oh, I love it. If I could stay here all year round and teach surfing I would in a heartbeat. I don’t ever want to be anywhere else than on the beach and in the sea.”

“Well, why don’t you stay here then? Do you really want to go and do Agricultural Science in college?”

“No” His shoulders slump. “I can’t be bothered with it really, but once September comes this beach is deserted. There’s not a soul around for the guts of nine months, you’d never get enough to fill a class in the Surf Shack. I have to find something else to do.” 

“That sounds hard.” I say. “It’s a shame you can’t keep on doing what you love.” I think about myself, and how I would feel if art was something I was unable to pursue, and instead I found myself stuck in some dull administrative job, spending each day filing papers and typing reports in some grey corporate office. I stare thoughtfully out towards the sea as I consider this, imagining myself in some alternate dimension where I am forced to choose between exclusively boring college courses, trying to get through my classes day after day, knowing that what waits me at the other end of it all is a job offer for the worst career possible. 

It takes me a moment to realise that Liam hasn’t spoken in a while, and I glance at him, but his face is towards the sand, he’s watching grains of sand spill through his fingers with brows knitted together anxiously. I immediately assume that I’ve said something wrong. “Are you okay?” I ask. 

“Yeah I’m fine.” He says absently.

“Are you sure? I didn’t say something wrong or anything did I?”

“No, not at all.” His eyes flicker up to meet mine. “You didn’t say anything.” I wonder in disappointment if I have ruined things. If he was going to make a move on me, he probably would have done it by now, and I worry that our date – if you can call it that – has been a failure. I glance at him and I wonder if I even want him to kiss me, if he tried to, would I let him? He is a nice boy, his face is handsome and he seems like a nice person and I think there must be something wrong with me if I don’t fancy him. I think then that I might start crying. 

“When I saw you outside the Surf Shack earlier I thought you were gorgeous.” He says finally. I’ve been so lost in my thoughts that it takes me a second to realise it. 

“Really?” I sound incredulous. But how can a boy look at anybody else when someone like Claire is sitting right in front of them?

“Yeah, there’s something about like, your eyes. I’ve not met anybody before who has green eyes like that.”

“Yeah right” I laugh, and it sounds harsh and out of place.

“No, I’m dead serious.” He says, cheeks pink with embarrassment. I realise he’s not setting me up, and I feel bad for laughing. It’s just hard for me to imagine that anybody would feel in any way intensely about me or any part of me. I look in the mirror and I can’t pick out any feature of mine that is especially beautiful or especially ugly. I’m just flat. Plain. Blank, and there’s nothing about me that… sparkles. 

“When you turned around and looked over at me, it’s like, I felt a shock when I saw your face, I just thought to myself; “who is she?’”

“That’s mad.” I feel my face getting hot, and I kind of want him to say more nice things about me, for as much as I find them hard to believe, it is lovely to think that somebody has looked at my face and seen something beautiful in it. 

He rakes his fingers through his blond curls and sighs. “I… Evie, you’re so nice and I wanted to come out here with you and I really wanted to kiss you, but now I’ve been feeling too nervous to make a move on you and I’ve just… made things so shit and awkward.”

“Oh.” I say, my heart suddenly thumping in my chest. I can’t think of how to respond, and he looks at me desperately, his eyes begging me to say something else to break the silence.

“Sorry, I think I’m the one who’s been making it awkward” I say at last.  

“So can I kiss you?” 

I wish that he hadn’t asked me and had just done it, and I kind of feel like rolling my eyes, but I nod, and then he leans towards me and then his lips are against mine. 

I don’t have a lot of experience with kissing, and most of my experiences with it have been truly horrible, but I find kissing Liam to be quite nice. He isn’t smashing his face against mine or immediately going in with too much tongue, he is gently holding the back of my neck, and his face and his breath are warm against my cheek. I find myself wishing that all of my kisses had been like this one, maybe then I wouldn’t be so traumatised by the concept of boys and love and sex. Maybe, after all, the whole thing doesn’t have to be such a monstrous ordeal. When I realise I am overthinking, I try to force my racing thoughts away so that I can focus on kissing him back. 

It doesn’t last very long, and when we pull away, we giggle nervously and then get up from the sand and begin slowly walking back down the beach together. It feels like now that we’ve done it, we can finally leave. I’m surprised that he reaches for my hand as we go and can’t help but think that it feels a little preemptive of him to do that. Doesn’t hand holding come later? Is there supposed to be some kind of discussion about where we stand with one another? Maybe I don’t understand the rules. I forget about it, and just enjoy the feeling of being close with another person like this. It’s safe and sweet and cosy, and we talk and joke hand in hand all the way back to the pub.

I'm In Love With The Villainess (Manga) Vol. 5 Quick Review

I'm In Love With The Villainess continues to be one of the most fun and exciting series around. The romance and action both are elevated going into volume 5 with a big slice of drama as the stunning princess Marnaria comes into town. This butch woman was Clair's first crush and Rae is hella jealous about it.

The action is really amazingly depicted in this volume, I think the fights were really fun and they weren't over used. The drama was well executed and while I knew what Marnaia's true intentions were the whole time and never doubted my read I still found the way she got to Rae to be very compelling. Aonoshimo's art continues to be a total banger with stunning work on all the characters and amazing use of expressions, action, backgrounds and space to depict the depth of the emotions at play.

This volume touches on queerness again in brief and the moments here are pretty good. I do wish that Rae and Manaria could have had more time to talk about being lesbians and that the word Lesbian saw any use at all here instead of the words queer and straight exclusively but it was for sure more than we get from many manga.

Manaria is my favorite character in the series so far, she is utterly charming and very OP in a way that I just adore. I hope she gets a happy life and a happy ending of her own. Overall, a great climax that I think will be a great ending point for the anime.

Kazumi Magica!

As the first spinoff of Madoka Magica, I'm not surprised this was first place. Considering, aside from the three girls we got at the beginning and Kazumi Subaru, there's no other Kazumi representation. Heck, we don't even have the presumable Magireco-original girl drawn by Kazumi's artist yet! We don't even Saki and Niko, who have both made physical appearance in the game already...

Madoka Magica!

This refers to the girls Madoka in saved in the montage, Cleopatra & Himiko, and the familiars of Walpurgis that appeared in the endcard. You think we'd get at least one of them in Puella Historia. There is a lot of situations where they could add them in, probably as three-star characters to add as permanent units to the gacha, rather than limited one, aside from the bear girl. Also the game (finally) get black representation with the savannah girl! Some of the girls are already shown to be present in the game

It's the first spinoff since the release of Magia Record, so of course this one was going to be high up! Really interested to see how Kosane & Eruna would work ingame, would they have separate magi outfits, doppels even? Couerl would probably be a capped welfare unit, much like previous girls named after the color black before her. Maybe even the finger family witch could too? Tying at fourth place with 8.9% of the votes each...

Mobage! and...

Tart Magica!

Mobage is most likely one of the only sources of Magi and Witch context not used in Magireco, and with some pretty interesting characters like Elise or Claire, and the 8 whole exclusive witches, I'm surprised they haven't. Tart on the other hand is probably the side series with the most characters featured in Magireco, now to the point that only a few minor magi could make their debut... and also like, the more than 30 witch designs they could use.
