Do all born Jewish ppl originate from Palestine? Cause i heard some ppl in the pro Palestine movement, reject the idea that European jews originate from there. Sorry if it's a stupid question I'm still learning i don't wanna offend anyone.
Judaism originates in Palestine. And since it's an ethnoreligion where you're either born into it or you jump through hoops to be adopted into it through our process of conversion, we maintained some genetic elements of that. Like genetic ties to the Canaanites, for example, which is something we have in common with Palestinians and other groups from here. For us it's... not as pronounced? Because of a couple of millennia in diaspora. Like, you'll be able to see in European Jews mostly genetics from around Europe, and then secondary to that, from the Levant. You could argue that it's so old that it doesn't matter anymore, Jews should see whatever countries they're in as their homes. I don't know that I'm very invested in that argument, beyond having a lot of love for diaspora cultures, because the answer to this doesn't change much for me materially. That's not the issue in my eyes, you know? The issue is weaponizing things like that to justify violence against Palestinian people and land.
What you might have seen, or what I think they probably tried to express, is opposition to the idea that we're indigenous to Palestine. Which, I talked about before. There are two possible definitions for indigeniety. One, we originated here. Second, the political situation in the relationship between colonizer and colonized - where the colonized is the indigenous population. The first can apply to us, and they use that to argue that the second isn't applicable to the situation. Because, in practice, in action, we are colonizers. We came here, conquered, killed, expelled, destroyed, we occupy, and we're still expanding all across the West Bank in pockets of settlements to make sure to steal as much Palestinian land as possible. Indigenous people around the world see themselves in the Palestinian struggle, for a reason. Historical colonizing forces are our biggest supporters, for a reason. Early Zionists relied on the British, an occupying force, for a headstart against the natives. If you study the history of Israel and the history of other colonialist projects around the world, you will see Israel repeating their patterns. Because that's what Israel is. It doesn't matter where we say we come from and how far back we trace it to, once we act as a colonizing force that's what we are, because that's the reality we're creating for Palestinian people to live through.
But if you say we're indigenous, using whatever history or genetics or cultural argument you want to make, you paint over that picture. It's no longer colonizer against colonized, it's a "conflict" between equally legitimate groups with equal claims to the land.
So, I just want to make it clear, when I say "we originated here" that's not what I'm talking about at all.
#riki babbles#that's also my answer to 'well if you say we're not indigenous then when does indigeniety expire? when did we stop being indigenous?'#I don't know that there's a time limit#but if we still had claim to that status I do think we lost it when we decided to colonize Palestine

The thing that gets to me with Old Man E-Soul is just how badly Mighty Glory screwed him over every step of the way.
Like, first you've got their shit show of a marketing strategy: They take this dude who's entire image comes from accessibility and heroism- he's the man who's on the ground working and anyone could be him so long as they're brave and do the right thing- and lock him away from crime fighting and make all his products completely unaffordable for most people. Then they stick him in press tours and advertising exclusively despite him being bad at public speaking and having no interest in doing it in the first place.
So then a new guy comes along and fills all the niches E-Soul used to while also being a young, pretty boy and takes some of that audience, and what do they do? A) Adjust their own marketing strategy in order to actually play to E-Soul’s strengths or B) try and work with the new guy? Nah, they go for C) dox the new guy, try and frame him for crimes that their own fucking boss was responsible for (covering up for him), hit him with a copyright strike (even though it goes against the spirit of "anyone can be E-Soul") against E-Soul’s wishes, and put the new guy in position where if he budges on any of their demands, it will look like he's admitting to the crime and the dude who actually did it will get away. And then when they lose the legal case- cuz of course they would, the new guy actually had recites- they just end up making E-Soul look like a jackass.
And then the final nail in the coffin is how they handled Shang Chao's murder. Child of a former manager of their own company/ current manager of a rival company, and known friend of the new guy gets shot and what do they say/do? Absolutely fucking nothing. No public announcement, no investigation, doesn't even try and de-escalate the conflict with the new guy after he accuses E-Soul of murder. Also, pretty weird of blonde manager to insist that showing up to the death fight was absolutely mandatory for clearing E-Soul’s name 🤨🤨🤨. You'd think a guy as publicly known as E-Soul would have an alibi 🤨🤨🤨
But ya, tldr- Rock can eat shit and die, idk if the manager was directly in leagues with Rock or not but fuck him either way, and I think OG E-Soul would've been better off and happier if he did community service work when he wasn't fighting crime. Free my man- he was a real ass hero, not an idol.
#to be hero x#tbhx#e soul#yang cheng#<-him too I guess but this is still mostly about the og#both him and Yang Cheng had their fuck ups along the way and things they could've done better but it's hard for me to care#MG screwed them both so badly I'm sure things still would've gone terribly even if they were perfect#The amusement park stuff is the only advertising E-Soul’s team did that I think was actually good#some context for maybe some of my wilder claims I guess:#we know Rock was already high up in MG while he was grooming Yang Cheng cuz he was the one making the final calls for the E-Soul performers#I'm pretty convinced Rock has always been MG's CEO but just wasn't public about it so he could get his hands in other companies#and screw them over. I dont have proof for that though#yang cheng had not made his name public so MG putting it on the news is infact doxing#yang cheng just accepting the copyright strike would screw him over because of the “accept it and we'll stop accusing you of a crime” thing#it'd make the public think he needed to get the accusation to go away quietly (making him look guilty)#we know Treeman had already been established at this point because Firm Man's statue is outside the building during Yang Cheng’s “trial”#I wanna be so clear that the side eye emojis are directed at management and management alone#fuck Rock- all my homies hate Rock

We are interrupting our regularly scheduled program to bring you a snippet of a potential ZoSan undercover as a married couple fic:
(Timeline wise shoehorned in sometime shortly after the timeskip, before the Strawhats make it back into the news big time.)
(People need saving from a exclusive circle of nobility, but most of the Stawhats have already been seen around the island, so the lot ends up on Zoro and Sanji to try get in posing as a freshly married couple on their honeymoon to try get more information.)
[after coming up with the plan and Zoro and Sanji hesitantly agreeing]
Robin: "You seem a little stressed, Cook-san."
Sanji, chain-smoking his third cigarette: "I'm fine, I'll do this… I just… I don't like lying about something as significant as marriage, alright? I know it's stupid, but that's just how I am."
Luffy, perking up from where one might have thought he wasn't paying attention at all: "Oi, Sanji, promise to protect Zoro?"
Sanji, puffing out smoke: "Obviously, the Marimo would get lost within all of two seconds without me having his back."
Luffy: "Good! Now, Zoro--!"
Zoro, already rising to the bait: "Oi, if anyone is protecting anyone, I'll be guarding your lanky ass, shit cook!"
Luffy, laughing: "Alright, then as the captain of this ship I hereby pronounce you married!"
Zoro:
Sanji:
Robin: "Oh my, congratulations!"
Brook: bursts into song
Luffy, grinning at Sanji: "See, now it's not a lie anymore, so you don't have to feel bad about calling Zoro your husband."
Zoro: "LUFFY!!! YOU CAN'T JUST--"
Sanji: wordlessly walks off to get ready for the mission
Usopp: "Wait, wait!" runs after Sanji, grabbing his wrist
Sanji: stares
Usopp, sweating nervously: "Need your ring size…"
Sanji: staring intensifies
Usopp, scurrying off as quickly as humanly possible: "Wedding gift!"
Luffy, in the distance, still being yelled at by Zoro: "Too bad we don't have time to celebrate, I really want some wedding cake… :("
#zosan#yes hello obviously i ship these idiots too#sanji actually makes use of his experiences on momoiro island and crossdresses for the sake of the mission#he's scary good at it too but no one asks for fear of sanji in a gorgeous dress kicking their heads off#maybe i have iva put them onto that mission in the first place simply because i think that would be funny#zoro is very confused but he won't have anyone claim he isn't treating his wife? husband? right even if its just for this mission#there's bed sharing; accidental cuddling; show kisses that feel too good; so so many endearments...#also zoro smoking with sanji because 'no fair woman of this status would ever be seen smoking moss head!'#zoro lighting one of sanji's cigarettes: 'you are a good wife indulging your new husband's bad vices then'#just zoro treating sanji every bit like he would a genuine partner and being stupidly endearing as he does#roronoa zoro#black leg sanji#monkey d. luffy#nico robin#one piece usopp#strawhat pirates#fake marriage#or is it?#one piece

I wasn’t sure how to incorporate this into the options, but add in the tags if you think he also hated purebloods!
#i assume no one thinks he hates halfbloods#i feel like i am between 2 and 3 but more towards 2#my own opinion is that he resented both the muggle world and pureblood society#the former bc of his friendless outcast status in the orphanage and his muggle father#and he clearly thinks he’s special due to magic#the latter for disowning (and being willing to murder) him and his mother and never claiming him as family#and all the bigoted slytherins who looked down on him i’m sure#hate is a strong word on either end so i am using resentment. bc most of the people he loved were pureblood obviously#but he also looked down on purebloods for their more extreme opinions on muggles#so his hatred for muggles isn't *as* strong as many purebloods#i think he's definitely fine w muggleborns tho#obviously since my opinion is that he chose harry over neville due to seeing himself in lily#tom riddle#tom marvolo riddle#lord voldemort#voldemort#harry potter#bellamort#tomarry#harrymort#riddledore#snapemort#*

The fans: Ugh Sonic was just so preachy. I mean obviously he's supposed to be the good guy, so any uncomfortableness I feel here and any way I feel like Sonic's choices are framed as being why some other people have shitty lives is just bad writing because he is obviously supposed to be right always, but this characterization makes no sense. Isn't he right for the things he did?
Ian Flynn, using Kitsunami to say the (barely even at this point) quiet part even louder: Hey it's almost like ever since the Mr. Tinker event we've been purposely running with the critique of Sonic as being more selfish than he appears. Sonic is upholding a system of Eggman v Sonic that currently benefits him and shuts down talk of how to improve the current system because he likes his own personal enjoyment and he's attached enough to Eggman that he'd rather Eggman pretend to be a good person than be stuck in prison for life. He doesn't even quite practice what he preaches. We are trying to show that the current hero v villain system and Sonic's recklessness currently affects some people poorly and that Sonic isn't a perfect hero.

Speaking of the social context of P&P and Austen in general, and also just literature of that era, I'm always interested in how things like precisely formulated hierarchies of precedence and tables of ranked social classes interact with the more complex and nuanced details of class-based status and consequence on a pragmatic day-to-day level. I remembered reading a social historian discussing the pragmatics of class wrt eighteenth-century English life many years ago and finally tracked down the source:
"In spite of the number of people who got their living from manufacture or trade, fundamentally it was a society in which the ownership of land alone conveyed social prestige and full political rights. ... The apex of this society was the nobility. In the eyes of the Law only members of the House of Lords, the peerage in the strictest use of the word, were a class apart, enjoying special privileges and composing one of the estates of the realm. Their families were commoners: even the eldest sons of peers could sit in the House of Commons. It was therefore in the social rather than in the legal sense of the word that English society was a class society. Before the law all English people except the peers were in theory equal. Legal concept and social practice were, however, very different. When men spoke of the nobility, they meant the sons and daughters, the brothers and sisters, the uncles and aunts and cousins of the peers. They were an extremely influential and wealthy group.
"The peers and their near relations almost monopolized high political office. From these great families came the wealthiest Church dignitaries, the higher ranks in the army and navy. Many of them found a career in law; some even did not disdain the money to be made in trade. What gave this class its particular importance in the political life of the day was the way in which it was organized on a basis of family and connection ... in eighteenth-century politics men rarely acted as isolated individuals. A man came into Parliament supported by his friends and relations who expected, in return for this support, that he would further their interests to the extent of his parliamentary influence.
"Next in both political and social importance came the gentry. Again it is not easy to define exactly who were covered by this term. The Law knew nothing of gentle birth but Society recognized it. Like the nobility this group too was as a class closely connected with land. Indeed, the border line between the two classes is at times almost impossible to define ... Often these men are described as the squirearchy, this term being used to cover the major landowning families in every county who were not connected by birth with the aristocracy. Between them and the local nobility there was often considerable jealousy. The country gentleman considered himself well qualified to manage the affairs of his county without aristocratic interference.
"...The next great layer in society is perhaps best described the contemporary term 'the Middling Sort'. As with all eighteenth-century groups it is difficult to draw a clear line of demarcation between them and their social superiors and inferiors. No economic line is possible, for a man with no pretensions to gentility might well be more prosperous than many a small squire. There was even on the fringe between the two classes some overlapping of activities ... The ambitious upstart who bought an estate and spent his income as a gentleman, might be either cold-shouldered by his better-born neighbours or treated by them with a certain contemptuous politeness. If however his daughters were presentable and well dowered, and if his sons received the education considered suitable for gentlemen, the next generation would see the obliteration of whatever distinction still remained. The solid mass of the middling sort had however no such aspirations, or considered them beyond their reach.
"...This term [the poor] was widely used to designate the great mass of the manual workers. Within their ranks differences of income and of outlook were as varied as those that characterized the middle class. Once again the line of demarcation is hard to draw..."
—Dorothy Marshall, Eighteenth Century England (29-34)
(There's plenty more interesting information in the full chapter, especially regarding "the poor," and the chapter itself is contracted from a lengthier version published earlier.)
#anghraine babbles#long post#dorothy marshall#eighteenth century england#austen blogging#eighteenth century blogging#also thinking about this in terms of elizabeth spending so much of pride and prejudice /acutely/ conscious of a social divide#between her family (as in the bennets and mr collins) and darcy's status - so her claim to equality with him w/ lady catherine is- well#not a dry sociological statement but an important character moment for elizabeth (and lady catherine!)#realistically darcy's lifestyle politics and interests ARE far more allied with ppl like the fitzwilliams than ppl like the bennets#and elizabeth is not at all ignorant of that - it's why she initially thinks he's too much of a great man to be interested in her#even before she knows of his close connections to literal nobility#and that is probably the more ... normative? understanding of their respective positions.#so her later claim to equality with him - in a way that forces ly c to acknowledge elizabeth's own status - is not a simple neutral truth#but weighted in a way that's important thematically and for elizabeth's development - something that the pure sociological take misses imo#anghraine's meta#austen fanwank#sorta

arranged marriage au but both you and character don't want to get married. however, in order to receive your inheritance, you have to agree to try your best to make this relationship work + because of similar familial pressure, character is also compelled to see this marriage through. however, your family does understand that if it's character that breaks off the engagement, they'll understand that you tried your best and you get full access to your trust fund and you don't have to tie the knot. for character, if you break off the engagement, he's in the clear, too.
so now, it's a competition between you two. unbeknownst to the other, y'all are both actively trying to get the other to get so frustrated that you'll send the loser running for the hills, crying to get the engagement broken.
#blah blah blah something about how neither of u were ever able to be fully 100% yourselves with ur peers#because of the social circle u 2 run in a lot of ppl are untrustworthy#or u get away with a lot of shit and ppl tolerate u because of ur money and status#so u both end up showing ur true colors to each other#convinced that it'll send the other person jumping ship#but while u 2 claim that it's just bc y'all don't want to be the one to break the engagement#.... you both end up enjoying each other's genuine authentic selves

Cults & Autonomy: Lae'zel and the Gith

I know what you may be thinking "Lae'zel isn't in a cult, it's more like a military!" From the memoir I am going through about cults, the author was both in a cult and in the military (the US military) and they argue that military's and militia groups employ the same tactics cults do to control their soldiers. The author also states that cults can be highly militant, in which members see themselves as soldiers to The Idol and are expected to be ready to fight and die for The Idol. So, in a way, a military is a type of cult, and so are the gith we meet in BG3. I'm not saying every single military is a cult, but there are too many overlaps between the two to truly ignore.
Nothing better exemplifies that one has no autonomy than the expectation to be ready to die for The Idol. Members are expected to literally lay down their lives, not for their sake or ideals, but for The Idol and The Idol alone. And Lae'zel proudly proclaims she is willing to die for Vlaakith and everything she does is with the intent to fulfill Vlaakith's will. Hells, even wanting to cleanse herself of the ghaik abomination is for Vlaakith and she is doing you a huge favor by even offering you a chance to go to a creche and into a zhaith'isk. And we all know that the zhaith'isk is a nice, pleasant spa day that ends in total annihilation (seriously, it's intended purpose is to kill gith who get infected).
Lae'zel also has this dream to Ascend one day, to serve as Vlaakith's personal guard and ride a red dragon. This is something that Vlaakith does offer her at some point in the story. I mean, who wouldn't want to be the right hand to The Idol? Except, we learn through Voss, or the hard way, that Ascension is just Vlaakith literally consuming a gith like a protein shake. And it seems like this massive betrayal, but it really isn't. In this ending where Lae'zel does ascend, she isn't scared. She's happy, she's honored to be there. Ascension is what they have all been told to strive for, they have all been told to sacrifice themselves for Vlaakith anyway. It only feels like a true betrayal if you reject Vlaakith in the creche and speak to Voss and learn the origins of Vlaakith. This would be Lae'zel's true first crack in her programming. Soldiers risk and sacrifice their lives fighting on behalf of The Idol, under the premise that it is for something greater. To find out that The Idol has been consuming your people for generations for no other purpose than to empower themselves is a shock. They are willing to die for The Idol, not for The Idol to kill them.
When you first visit the creche, you can witness a situation in the training room in which either you or another gith student can kill a young male gith (or spare him if you choose). He isn't doing so well with the lessons, he is timid, and doesn't have the warrior's spirit in which even the instructor says he is better off dead. You can speak to Lae'zel about this and she sees no issue with killing the kid, seeing that an army is only as strong as the weakest warrior and he was weak. She even confirms that at a young age, she had killed a few of her own littermates because she was the strongest and thus deserved to survive. The others were either too weak or too stupid for underestimating her and picking a battle they couldn't win. Even when young, the gith are conditioned to have a "Cull the Weak" mindset, in which this cannibilization isn't just normalized, but expected. Every one of them is prepared to be discarded, so they have this intense fortitude to give their all.
Lae'zel also confirms that gith reproduction is asexual and sexual intercourse is not required. She even brags to the player that she can have all the sex she wants and not have to worry about pregnancy (which is hilarious because the VA for Lae'zel was pregnant while working on BG3). Lae'zel's initial view of sex is something a long the lines of "sex is for fun only, no feelings allowed!" To her, sex is a fight, a demonstration of strength and dominance. That in sex, one partner submits and loses autonomy, while the other takes control and is free to do whatever they please.
Anyway, I want to circle back to reproduction. The gith don't have a say in when to lay their eggs, or if they are allowed to. No, gith have to be chosen before they can lay an egg. The gith have no say on whether or not they have children, and they do not take any part in raising their children. Lae'zel says it would be an honor to be chosen to lay eggs, but it is one that she doesn't actually want for herself. But she has no say, if she is chosen to lay an egg, she has to. She is completely deprived of choice over her own reproduction. In which laying in egg is not for herself because she has the desire to have a family, but because the gith need more soldiers.
The gith only want to "best" soldiers. The strongest ones, the smartest ones, the ones with the best fortitude and conviction. Everyone else, they prefer to have die. This "Cull the Weak" attitude and controlled reproduction is eugenics. A deliberate and violent manipulation of a population of people under the premise that some are just "better" and thus more deserving of privileges, more deserving of rights, and more deserving of life. That the most perfect and ideal race people can be designed. It fosters an internal system of constant conflict in which they are competing with each other, and killing each other, just to have the privilege of survival. They take no issue with killing their own and expect the same to be done to them. They live in a culture where one cannot afford to fail, cannot afford to make mistakes, or they will be culled from the herd.

#bg3#baldur's gate 3#lae'zel#bae'zel#like seriously - go through the creche but think of it like a cult and tell me if it doesn't sound like a cult#this type of systemic denial of autonomy works because there is a structured hierarchy within the gith#the higher up the hierarchy you go - the more rights and privileges you get as well as a greater claim to life#and those who are higher up have the right to deprive those lower than them of their rights and autonomy as well#and those lower in status thinking killing their siblings is autonomy - but it's the opposite#they fight for their own autonomy because they have none and are desperate to climb upwards#but the top of the hierarchy is ascension - where they are rewarded with death for being the best of the best#there is only one person that is truly untouchable - and that is The Idol - Vlaakith#and she is having the gith always chewing at each other's throats to keep herself in power

Ok long yap but I wanna write a camp halfblood au for bsd so bad askljalsdj bc hear me out yosano daughter of hades grows up in an orphanage (run by fukazawa, who acts as chiron in this au just like chiron works at percy's school trying to keep an eye on yosano) and ranpo grows up in the same orphanage, but ranpo is a mortal who can see through the mist. and like yk how sally was at risk for monster attacks bc of how much time she spent with percy despite being human? the same thing applies to ranpo. So when fukuzawa needs to take yosano to camp halfblood for her own safety he takes ranpo too, who just says he was "claimed" before they reached camp-halfblood to keep the "he doesn't have an ability but he acts like he does" vibes
Back at camp halfblood we've got Poe, son of athena who arrived at camp halfblood after his uncle decided he couldn't deal with the demigod stuff (his dad was already dead atp), and lucy who arrived a year before yosano and ranpo with louisa and is a daughter of Hephaestus who makes giant bronze battle statues like the ones across manhattan in the pjo series that look like Anne from Anne's room
Louisa is also a younger daughter of athena ofc
We've also got Dazai as a son of Dionysus with his laid-back but manipulative vibes and Chuuya son of ares (I don't wanna make them children of the big three bc I'd want Atsushi to have that) with Kouyou and Verlaine also children of Ares w him, and then Atsushi is a son of zeus and akutagawa and gin are children of hermes (so akutagawa feels inferior like a lot of the kids of hermes do in canon bc their abilities aren't really combat focused)
Kenji son of demeter, obviously, Kyouka hunter of artemis and tanizaki is a mentee of hecate (which was established by hazel as a thing in the 2nd series) with Naomi being a prophet like rachel?? Kunikida is an apollo kid who utilizes poetry and appreciates rising with the sun (hes a pretty unusual child of apollo which makes dazai try and get him to loosen up) and he's head of the cabin and takes very good care of the younger campers
But like??? It works??? ive been thinking about this au so much im obsessedddd if I wrote it it probably wouldn't be like pjo canon compliant just using the camp as an au but i think it would be so much fun aslkjalksdjka
#ranpo claims to be a son of iacchus or despoina who are minor gods related to the eleusinian mysteries#but that is subject to change#i just love the idea of lucy making giant ragdoll-looking bronze statues that fight for her#she is banned from using them during capture the flag#id have to switch up their ages a bit but id probably keep age groups the same so ranpo and poe similar age#and lucy atsushi louisa etc same age#something like that#i love the idea of son of dionysus dazai but i could also see son of hermes so akutagawa has even more of a reason to look up to him#also yosano would be getting her spotlight which i love#shes a daughter of hades but forces her way into the infirmary because dammit shes gonna be a doctor one way or another#plus kunikida being a son of apollo means he probably helps yosano become a healer#sigma and ango are also children of athena btw#and i love kouyou daughter of ares i think it would be so cool#plus maybe verlaine and rimbaud get their tragic backstory on the way to camp halfblood#like how thalia sacrifices herself for annabeth grover and luke to get to the camp#maybe thats how they got chuuya there or something#ok ill probably yap more about this eventually but i need to stop clogging the tags lmao#bungou stray dogs#bsd yosano#bsd ranpoe#bsd poe#bsd lucy#armed detective agency#port mafia#ranpoe#camp halfblood au

How do you think Vegeta would react if Yamcha said “trunks is like a son to me”

Maybe it’s different in the anime but I don’t think I see any extended interactions between Yamcha and Trunks, so I imagine Vegeta would be surprised at what counts as feeling like a parent on this planet 😂
#Maybe he’s there more in the anime but he’s fully got his own separate life in the manga he’s hardly around#And considering his “don’t blame me” stance on baby trunks I imagine claiming fatherhood is not on his to-do list#I think Yamcha wants to be at least a husband before he starts thinking about reaching for parental status Jfjdjd
