Day Ninety-Nine
The social-emotional development of ninth graders is seldom linear, and sometimes things happen that undo a lot of the progress, but today felt like a turning point in Global Studies- in all of the sections, in fact.
I say that because after I finished teaching about the start of the Rwandan Genocide, and had students read the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, I asked them to consider what our country had to consider at the time: the pros/cons of intervention. Students brought up the treaty, the impact honoring it or not would have on our reputation, the cost of intervention in lives and money, the potential to save lives and stop the genocide, the risk of escalating the conflict further, and so on. It was a serious conversation, and if someone wasn't treating it seriously- like, if they tried to make a joke comment- their peers shut them down.
That's new, and that's why it felt like a turning point.
And I felt like I could push the conversation further, so I asked them what they would have done if they'd been in charge of the US at the time. A few students in each section put their hands up- a brave thing to do in a weighty conversation like that- and shared a variety of viewpoints. I thanked them for doing so afterwards. Then I asked them what they thought the US actually did- I've written before that they're not familiar with this part of history at all, so they genuinely don't know the answer- and opinions were split.
Naturally, the block ended right after that, so I said they'd find out next week and left it as a cliffhanger. Keeps them exciting about coming to my class!
Also cool: there was a sub in for the para who's usually with one of my students, and she thought my lesson was awesome.
Tumblr media
I didn't have an awesome APGOV lesson because students had to take the US Citizenship Test today. The results sure were awesome, though! So that's a graduation requirement out of the way, and it was the first time these students witnessed my lightning fast grading skills (unless they had me as a teacher in ninth grade, too), and that was fun. They had the remainder of the block to work on discussion questions for Federalist 10 and 51, am looking forward to hearing what they have to say on Monday!
For now, though? Time to enjoy my weekend. TGIF!

Germany to approve new citizenship regulations
Germany is reforming its citizenship law, simplifying the procedure for obtaining German citizenship, Deutsche Welle reports.
German authorities are planning to simplify the procedure for obtaining dual citizenship and naturalisation for citizens of non-EU countries. This reform has been in preparation since the centre-left coalition of the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP) came to power in autumn 2021.

Why Goats Can't Vote ...
I originally wrote this post in May 2016, nearly six months before the election in which Donald Trump would lose the popular vote, but manage to get enough votes in the right places to slide into office on the Electoral College vote.  And now … well, here we are again.  Although more than 7 years old, I think this post is just as relevant today as it was then. What if voters across the U.S.…

I was talking to an idiot and I need validation.
#superman#clark kent#kal el#comics#dc comics#smallville#martha kent#jon kent#ma kent#pa kent#im gonna rant now. this isnt at you its at the dumb fuck who was commenting on my comment on tiktok.#YES! why the fuck wouldn't he be! he was ADOPTED to be adopted you gotta have the right paperwork in order. the person im mad at LITERALLY#SAID Clark was in an orphanage... lets put our thinking caps! if he was in an orphanage Ma and Pa gave him to the state and yk what! i bet#they thought he was an abandoned baby! no one knew he was an alien. if they didnt he would have been in a govt lab! and in a comic i read ma#and pa thought he was a nasa experiment! yk how they put dogs and moneys in orbit? they thought they did that with a baby! so they took him#ok ok ok then the person i was debating said ma and pa were CRIMINALS!!!!! THEY JUST SAID CLARK WAS IN AN ORPHANAGE!#SO MA AND PA FOUND A BABY. TURNED HIM OVER TO THE AUTHORITIES AND AFTER IT WAS PROVEN THAT HE HAD NO FAMILY THEY ADOPTED HIM!#all of that is legal! they made it sound like ma snuck into a house a stole a child! put some respect on the Kents!#and for why we were debating. he had to have been assigned an ID/ss number/citizen ship because he was to the govt an abandoned BABY#they made it sound like Clark was a 20 year old! he was at best a toddler. he didnt need to take a citizenship test or anything cus HE WAS A#BABY! he was just issued citizenship cus to the govt he was an abandoned baby in the usa WHERE EISE WOULD HE HAVE BEEN FROM!#cus i cant stress this enough NO ONE KNEW HE WAS AN ALIEN! (except maybe ma and pa)#the govt gave an abandoned baby in Kansas an us id cus THEY HAD NO REASON TO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE BABY FOUND IN A FEILD IN KANSAS WASN'T#BORN IN THE USA! and with all the paperwork they did on him they gave him us citizen rights like THE RIGHT TO VOTE#there are a million possibilities for why a baby would be abandoned in a feild in Kansas and it would take awhile to aliens#this is what i think the govt thought 'ok baby abandoned in a feild of a local couple. no family to be found. a young mother probably got#pregnant and didn't want to baby so she left it where a couple who couldn't have children could find them. oh look the couple wants to adopt#let them take the baby.' babys being abandoned was so common that safe haven laws were made to give mothers who didnt want their infants a#safe place to drop their kid off (usually a special box at a fire department or hospital)

Finding out that my former friend who wrote clean regency is a Republican was somehow more shocking than finding out that another author who writes dark mafia romance based off of children's movies is a republican
I mean like, to be fair, dark mafia girl also runs a publishing house that's a literal pyramid scheme and writes the worst sex scenes I've ever seen in my life but like
The other one I was literally on my knees like no baby girl, please... What would Lord farthing say? We were supposed to talk about Victorian children plucking rabbits together baby, not talk about how you think we should throw the children of immigrants out of the country.
She was like "we used to mail children...maybe we could do that now" LIKE GREAT HISTORICAL FACT BUT WHAT THE FUCK

wild to me that it takes hours for people in the usa to vote. it's never taken me more than 10 minutes and that's including the inevitable chit chat with the people there because they're either my parents' neighbours or the parents of people i went to school with.
#literally have your voting card and some kind of id ready#if you don't have your voting car then you just have to look up what desk you're supposed to go to usually it's split alphabetically so#for albonium it would be desk 1#get there give id (either my id my passport my social security card my driving license or a hunting permit (💀))))))))#pick up the little papers and an envelop#get in the booth#put the little paper in the envelop#that's if you haven't done it at home already#get out#put it in the box#the person there says “ HAS VOTED”#you sign next to your name#take your id#and fuck off#before your cousin's neighbours' grandma asks how your aunt is doing and if you've heard about the bakery being closed because the baker's#wife cheated on him and now he's got to take care of the kids and aetstdfhgfsgjgthj#you get what i mean#10 minutes tops#even in big cities#also it's always by paper like this if you want you can vote for someone else but you have to file papers at the police station#people empty the boxes and count them all together#if you want you're allowed to stay and watch as they count#or you can ask beforehand to participate in the counting#kids are automatically signed up on the voting lists when they turn 18 if they've done their mandatory 'defense and citizenship" day#ok this one is kind of propaganda-y for the army the cops etc but at the same time it allows to test the entire population to see if they'r#illeterate (there's grammar spelling etc tests)#do some driving rules lessons#cpr training#reminder about blood donations etc#which imo is important

Day One Hundred Seventy-One
Sometimes I have to ask dumb questions about being a department head. We're hiring for one position, and I was reading applicants' resumes, and deciding which ones to interview... and then I had to ask The Principal if I was supposed to call the applicants, or if he/his secretary would do it.
His secretary did it.
So, y'know, now I know. I like to think I won't have more dumb questions in the future- like, I have to know everything by now, right?- buuuuut who knows.
In more epic news, every senior has passed the US citizenship test (which, for those of you who haven't been following along at home, is a graduation requirement in NH now) as of this morning, yay! The Principal thanked my whole department for the work we did to make it happen, and I added my own thanks to my colleagues for proctoring and grading.
As for my teaching day, it was pretty chill during Global Studies. I had to give a couple students a talking-to for trying to disrupt the class next door by knocking on the walls and other silly stuff like that, but that was it. They worked hard on the current issues assignments they've been working on, I helped them out as needed, things were good.
Mr. W came to APGOV to do karate. First, he started by talking about being an elected library trustee (local government!), but, at one point, when he was mid-sentence, I threw a punch at him and we started sparring. Then we actually changed into our karate uniforms and continued to demonstrate martial arts stuff for the rest of the block. That was me fulfilling a promise to students that I'd made months ago. See, back when they were freshmen, there were still a lot of pandemic restrictions in place- including no mixing cohorts- so Mr. W and I couldn't do the demo we'd done every other year, and they wanted us to do it this year.
I refuse them very little, so I made it happen.
Since they're graduating soon, we did our best to impart some karate wisdom that doubles as life wisdom (structure is important, training is about making progress, relax and breathe, let go of the things that don't actually make you a better person, etc, etc...) and we had a ton of fun.
At practice, the sprinters did a couple times 40m dashes, practiced some blocks, and went home. We're tapering down, we know they're ready!

Video
Should probably have posted a link to the site I was doing the test on, so here. Should warn you though there's loads of ads on that site, which you can see in the video. But if you haven't seen the video, maybe you want to see if you can do better than me, in which case I will further that I am pretty damn hot on US history - probably better than I am at British or Irish (but then there is less US history, so...). Maybe we'll find out in the future.

Supposedly, most Americans can’t ace this US citizenship exam. So how will I, a Not-American, do?

I calculated my days of absence from the UK and if I were to submit my citizenship application next may I would exceed the limit due to having fucked off to Italy for 5 months during the covid lockdowns in 2020. which means I could apply in january 2026, provided I only spend 12 weeks out of the UK between now and then. which sounds like a lot but it isn't to me because I work from home and spending a few weeks with my family every now and then has been the only thing keeping me sane
