@cinemaocd mentioned you on a post “Mark Rylance and Kate Phillips as Thomas Cromwell...”:
@terribleoldwhitemen: Ur tags! EXACTLY! Fuck all Jane/Crom flirtation in the book though she does troll him over the wedding night which I'm still pissed that they didn't include (maybe somehow it will be in the next ep?) but it was a let down for me because it felt like she was building an arc and then dumped it.
right!! I thought perhaps I wasn't smart enough to catch what mantel was doing in regards to dropping that thread completely in MatL, but I was certainly disappointed, especially with the way the miniseries brought it to the fore. extremely excited to see it highlighted again (even if this first episode is all we end up getting).

I'm on my third rewatch of the O.C. since it aired and I'm finally coming to grips with the way the showrunners did Marissa dirty. I think Mischa Barton should get some kind of back pay for hazardous duty for enduring the show...
It's completely messed up that she was the actual age of the character she was playing, while everyone else was playing younger, was far more experienced in life and in acting. It was messed up that she was in a relationship with her older male co-star and that was just OK with everyone. It was messed up that the writers seemed to go out of their way to create "make Marissa miserable" story lines that drove away Mischa's fans from the show...just messed up.
Anyway, love your blog.
Thanks for sending this in :))) I appreciate it. Sometimes I feel like I'm in an echo chamber of how horrendously the character and her actress were treated in tandem so it's nice when people reach out and feel similarly and remind me I'm not the only one who thinks this is bullshit. Like, I do love many parts of the show so much, but holy fuck was it a shit show on both sides of the camera.
ETA: I will say that MB fans were ride or die Marissa fans. They held on for 3 years of the character being tortured and were extremely over it all when TPTB did what they did and vowed not to watch anymore. It's what got the show finally cancelled (despite what TPTB says about 325 being the only reason they could even make a final crap season). That last season basically lost half their viewership.

For the WIP meme:
The Downtown Club New York 1968
this is the one I have least written for, because I got the prompt just last week for my intoabar fic! I chose Crowley as the character who goes into a bar and Harlots, Slings & Arrows and Merrily We Roll Along as my crossover fandoms. I've written one crossover with Crowley before (with Harlots) and have another I want to write, but that's not how the dice fell this time.
my assignment: Crowley goes into a bar and meets... Mary Flynn (Merrily We Roll Along)!
Merrily goes backwards from the late 1970s to the late 1950s, and I've written a series of fics set post-canon (pre-show?) and one much later (my previous intoabar crossover with Slings & Arrows, where post-canon Geoffrey Tennant meets Charley Kringas), so the first decision was when in the Merrily timeline to set it.
the fic will follow the scene in Frank's apartment where Mary (who has been teetotal) starts drinking for the first time because she's distressed about Frank's affair with Gussie (who is married to Frank and Charley's producer, Joe). Frank is supposed to join Mary and Charley (and Charley's wife, Evelyn) for a celebration at the Downtown Club, described by Frank as "a smoky Greenwich Village dive", but we know by the end of the scene that he's going to stand them up because of Gussie.
youtube
the current Broadway cast (Daniel Radcliffe as Charley, Jonathan Groff as Frank, and Lindsay Mendez as Mary) singing "Old Friends", the song from earlier in the apartment scene, before Gussie and Joe arrive and everything falls apart.
in the GO timeline this follows the Soho 1967 scene ("you go too fast for me, Crowley")...

The way I knew she was referring to Starlight Express and knew about the train rollerskates but NOT that it was a Cinderella story, thus making "Bad Cinderella" even MORE of an ANDREW THIS IS EMBARRASSING JUST STOP, which I did not think was POSSIBLE....
also shout out to you for watching Yellowjackets with your FAMILY, holy smokes.

@cinemaocd well matl only really handles her interactions with cromwell which all take place at hunsdon iirc, it's possible the mini will cheat and put her back at court too early to save on location shooting.
yeah, i've read the scene ( the historically-accurate creepy ring gifted by cromwell, and cromwell's historically inaccurate...presence). i'm not really planning on watching, but i hope it's not adapted at all, and the script has its own original interpretation, tbh. i found it pretty gross.
between ‘she was served with more ceremony than ever before’ (she had 30 attendants, versus fitzroy’s 100+) and:

… we really have yet to have a narrative able to grapple with the complexities of mary’s life in the henrician era mid 1536-1547.

Now I’m listening to America (thanks Jenny) but “I Need You” is making me cry because it’s what they played when Jesse died on All My Children (before he was miraculously resurrected) and man, but Jesse and Angie were so friggin’ ICONIC that I am still crying about them lo these many years later.

Me in 2013 sneaking out of my parents’ house to frantically apply fake stubble in a hotel bathroom: sure hope this doesn’t awaken anything in me
I’m totally going to end up having to goose my natural beard quotient with a stipple sponge… time to experiment. Why can I not fixate on a character who’s clean-shaven like a newborn baby? (Because Hugh Dancy clean-shaven looks like a newborn baby, that’s why.)
The plaid shirt I bought in 2013 for my Will Graham cosplay at Convergence rapidly became part of my normal day to day wear and I’m already preparing to do that with the shirt I bought in 2023 for my Will Graham cosplay at Convergence. I am even less capable of growing a nice beard in 2023 than I was on 2013.

Further bits and pieces of worldbuilding that I really liked in Furiosa (the previous post have gotten rather long)
One of the first shots of the film is trees being detroyed by a shock wave, and later as the raiders escape with Furiosa we see the edges of the Green Place eroding into the desert; a sign of what's to come. And zooming in from space, this paradise is so terribly small...
Furiosa knows how to disable a motorcycle, but still marvels at the petrol pouring over her hand.
There's a brief moment where someone is using a satellite dish as a cooking pot!
Toe Jam and his companion automatically assume that it's Furiosa's father tracking them, not her parents; certainly not her mother.
The first thing the Organic Mechanic does whenever he meets someone new is to check their fingers and teeth to see what kind of health they're in; he does this later with the Lone War Boy, without even being told to do so by Dementus.
When his followers get too rowdy, Dementus calls them off with a whistle - they are his hounds too.
Dementus orders for their best drinking water to be used to wash Furiosa; an immediate sign of how valuable he considers her to be.
I have a theory about the Organic Mechanic serving human blood sausage (the jury is out on whether he was actually drawing Furiosa's blood or whether he was bluffing in front of Immortan Joe). He doesn't yet have the resources to safely do blood transfusions, so this is a simplified way of trying to keep Dementus healthy and strong!
There are wind turbines on the top of the Citadel, but we don't see them move; a shallow echo of the turbines in the Green Place.
The power dynamics in Dementus' horde; the Mortiflyers answer to the Octoboss, who calmly tells them to comply; compare this with Dementus' posturing...
Immortan Joe is the only one during negotiations to speak directly to Furiosa, asking her questions and getting answers from her - yet we never see him speak to any of the women in his harem. When one of them gives birth to a mutated baby he turns and departs without a word, leaving Scrotus to pass sentence on her.
I've commented before on how unsettling it is that Furiosa's given a little cubby of her own with a lamp and books and a bed, and how it all looks so normal. The whole setup of the harem is unnerving. Down in the depths of the Citadel everything is scavenged and mismatched; @cinemaocd noticed that the 'bunks' that Furiosa and Jack are sleeping on later in the film are actually repurposed lounge chairs. Even later on, when the People Eater is plotting battles, he uses salvaged objects to represent the armies. But up in the harem everything is preserved, clean and kept for its original purpose, from the chairs and chalkboard to the stacks of books and the ordinary (if not necessarily comfy) beds. Like the Green Place, the harem is recognisable and normal, a series of rooms you could well imagine in our universe...but it's a manufactured paradise rather than a natural one, a false 'haven' and a real prison for so many women.

I swear to God, if no one writes a wish fulfilment-y fantasy novel where an Anne Boleyn expy escapes the execution, turns out to be an heiress of ancient fae lineage or something, wages Epic Fantasy war on not-Henry, and gets the throne side by side with the evil chancellor with whom she had an enemies to lovers romance, I’m going to have to do it myself
