oh my god okay I've been waiting my whole life for this request, okay so here is a list in levels of painful (according to me) starting at "hmm sorta angsty" and finishing with "this has affected my soul and I am a void"
-the edge of seventeen
-little miss sunshine
-little women

-the half of it
now here's some sad but rather romance based ones:
-la la land
-call me by your name (I personally find this one sad but many disagree)
-irreplaceable you
-me before you
-marriage story
okay now these all require a quick tw search beforehand for your mental well-being:
-fanfic
-girl interrupted
-the perks of being a wallflower
-brain on fire
-all the bright places
-beautiful boy
-before I fall
-thirteen
-to the bone
-i believe in unicorns
-as you are
now these are more historical ones that made me feel devastated:
-elisa and marcela
-my best friend anne frank
(this next one is not a film but an incredible series ->)
Anne with an e
this is a bit more of a "what the fuck did I watch":
-the goldfinch
-the bridge to therabithia

This library is called "El Ateneo", but until the 2000s, it used to be a cinema/theater called Teatro Grand Splendid, which first opened in 1919.
It's one of my favorite buildings in Buenos Aires because how could it not? Look at the beautiful architecture!!

top 3 saddest films and why?( im curious!!)
oh my gosh thanks for this ask!! okay so I have to say my top saddest films EVER would be:
-the perks of being a wallflower
-brokeback moutain
-mysterious skin
the first film is a personal favourite ever and it holds a huge place in my soul and heart so it's always going to be my n.1 on many rankings (lots of crying for this one tbh)
the second film is about some queer cowboys but it shows the adversity and internalised homophobia when it comes to being someone queer in a very NON accepting area (I shed a tear the end too)
and the last film is about a specific type of trauma so some people are gonna need tw for it, but it's really well made in my opinion (this one is more sad in a way that if you relate to it's themes, it's sad to see yourself through that narrative)

so I am currently thinking about romance novels and gender a lot, and one concept I keep returning to is Janice Radway's assertion that the standard heterosexual male "hero" protagonist is an example of "spectacular masculinity." I have a lot of qualms with Radway's Reading the Romance, not least because she interprets the interviews she did with romance readers through the lens of feminist psychoanalysis (seriously), but her observations about the romance protagonists in the sample she read for her study are still really useful as a baseline. Why are romance "heroes" like that? The rippling muscles, the sexual aggression, the take-charge attitude? And I think I want to answer this question at least in part with Lucy Neville's Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, an investigation into women who engage with sexually explicit material about men such as a gay porn and m/m fanfiction: women who are attracted to men want to see men. We have very specific cultural ideas about what manliness and masculinity look like, and if you are a person who is attracted to men, that means you are at least partly attracted to manly, masculine traits as we have defined them. There are absolutely other factors at play here but I do think a significant portion of why romance heroes are still so emphatically masculine in many ways has to do with the desire of heterosexual women for masculine men whose masculinity includes loving and protecting "their" women. I think it's very straightforward that people want a relationship to involve the feeling of being taken care of and our social scripts ascribe specific gendered dynamics to that, so those dynamics get reproduced in art that depicts romantic relationships. We have constructed categories for masculinity and femininity and decided that it is good and desirable for a man to be masculine and a woman to be feminine, once you throw sexual attraction into this mix, of course a lot of heterosexual women enjoy reading about and looking at masculine men doing masculine things in their romantic and sexual fantasies! Especially when it's filtered through a female perspective!
