Ms. Codex 1233 is a pretty amazing manuscript. Originally written in the early-to-mid 15th century, it was used continuously through the end of the 18th century. Written in Cologne and probably used by the canons in the Cologne Cathedral, this notated breviary (a liturgical book containing the canonical hours - daily prayers - with musical notation) includes notes and additions made up to 1794. It also includes splatters of candle wax and one page that got a little too close to a candle!

“Nearer, My God, to Thee” is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, which retells the story of Jacob’s dream.
youtube
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me; Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee, Chorus: Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone; Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! There let the way appear steps unto heav'n; All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n; Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise; So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

“but herein lies the glory of the mystery: Christ was the man of sorrows, and acquainted with griefs; his heart melted like that of a merely human creature, and he never manifested any sign of anger except against insensibility and obduracy of soul. Love one another, was his incessant exhortation. Father, he exclaimed, writhing under the torments inflicted by his executioners, forgive them; for they know not what they do. When on the point of quitting his beloved disciples, he was all at once dissolved in tears; he experienced all the terrors of death, all the anguish of the cross; the blood-sweat trickled down his divine cheeks; he complained that his Father had forsaken him. Father, said he, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt. Then it was that that expression, fraught with all the sublimity of grief, fell from his lips: —’My soul is sorrowful, even unto death.’”

“so much of the new testament only half-tugs at me because jesus is so stoic and near-passive about going to his death in sacrifice so it’s hard to feel bad as he comes off as almost two-dimensional about it, but the one verse that gets me is luke 22:42.
“father, if you are willing, let this cup pass from me. not of my own will, but of yours to be done.”
i think it humanizes him more than anything else. he’s begging his father to make the inevitable pain just a little more bearable. a child willingly going to his death for his father without question, but in a nearing hour asking “will it hurt?” it makes me sad every time i think about it.”

I was in the House of God today, inside an absolutely stunning building in terms of architecture, embraced by the breathtaking sound of the organ, while the last sunbeams of the day were playing with the colours of the stained glass, creating beautiful paintings on the walls...
My soul was troubled and confused though…. While I was looking around, staring at the strained glass and listening to the music, I was crying to God saying "who are You??? And why are You after me???"
I just want to be left alone and in peace…. But my soul is so stubborn…. I should have kept her locked up in that tower I built for her during the years…. But every time I try that and, although she is troubled, she escapes…. And ends up more traumatised…. But, as I said, she is stubborn….
What gives????
........*sigh*........
Whoever You are, either go away and leave me in peace or do something that will finally take away the pain…. It's been 25 years in pain, 11 of which spent in serving, hoping, believing, obeying and enduring persecution for You. So, I repeat: Whoever You are, either go away and leave me in peace or do something that will finally take away the pain.
Enough. Is. Enough.

Maybe church music would be cooler if they wrote songs like Sleep Token or Ghost.

IT'S ADVENT 1 BAYBEEE
I am a church musician by trade and thus I am a tremendous fan of Advent music.
What's Advent music you ask? Well, Advent is the season of waiting, four Sundays preceding Christmas Day. So Advent music is all about capturing that feeling of longing anticipation, that yearning for better days. It tends to be a little more somber, a little darker than your usual Christmas music, and I LOVE it.
For those like me who prefer their pre-Christmas tunes a little bit more on the dark and dramatic side, here are a few favourites:
I look from afar (Palestrina)
youtube
A classic, a banger. The solo voice echoing out the call and the choir responding with swelling harmony? Chef's kiss. This is the first thing I listened to this morning.
Handmaid (Linnea Good)
youtube
Do you want a feminist POV of the Annunciation (where the angel said to Mary she would have a child)? Of course you do. The instruments in this song go HARD and the lyrics are beautiful.
The child I bear will save no race,
Yet move the throned ones apace.
Shall bring the mighty to the weak,
And help the very stones to speak.
This child will have his mother's face,
Yet die in poverty's disgrace upon the treasons day!
One more:
Creator of the stars of night (Gregorian chant)
youtube
It doesn't get more classic than this! I love this tune so much and there's so many different versions of it and they're all so serenely beautiful.
HAPPY ADVENT!

“The Greatest Superpower: The Power to Delete God”
Introduction:We often dream of having superpowers—strength, flight, the ability to control time. But what if I told you that every single one of us has the most incredible superpower imaginable? The power to delete God from our lives. This superpower is unlike any other. It’s the greatest, not because of its magnificence or glory, but because of its immense implications. It is the power of free…

"Thy Cross we worship"
I remembered one of my favourite Russian Orthodox chorales the other day, written by a certain Petr Goncharov:

at the roots of Ethel Cain's musical soul: singing from Perry First Church of God, Perry, Florida
I was just sent this video from Perry, Florida, from the 'Perry First Church of God' and I found this Florida church music very 'Ethel Cain coded.' It's very moving to hear it, I felt like I was at the roots of Ethel Cain's music. At one of the roots, and Ethel Cain made something quite different out of it.
Don't miss the very first notes of music ♡

At the rainbow mass
Last week was Pride week here and it ended up in a rainbow mass at the church on the Sweden side.
Some hymns ("Jumalan kämmenellä" gave me nostalgia tears...). dance performance from local dance school. And the church's band also played few songs. They covered Loreen's Tattoo at the end.
There I thought what I've been thinking for a longest time. Tattoo is quite a boring song. Structurally. Okay sounding, but doesn't give much emotion.
Almost wanted to shout "Play Cha Cha Cha instead!" XD

As easter rapidly approaches, I have a Tip for string musicians. The #1 thing I've learned as a violinist who frequently plays 2nd/lower harmony parts with organ & brass is to completely disregard any dynamics, and play fortissimo all of the time. No one will hear you if you play mezzo forte, mezzo piano, and especially piano, and it will really mess with your confidence when you're standing next to your mom who played trumpet afterward and she's getting tons of compliments and you're getting none because no one could even hear you over her and the organ. So yeah. PLAY OUT!!!! Use open/higher strings as much as possible!! Brass is LOUD, and most organ stops are meant to sound like strings, so you need to play as loud as possible to be heard. After a few times, I got the memo and just played super loudly, and got compliments after! (not as many as my mom still, but that'll happen when you have a mother who is basically a professional-level trumpet player...)
