People celebrating that bluesky has their feeds in chronological order, as if tumblr hasn't been doing that for fucking forever
I am also happy about it, but people saying bluesky is the first one to do this - no, they're just the first one Recently to do it. Chronological feeds Used to be the norm.
Tumblr is fucking ancient, babes. It's been doing this forever. You are experiencing how the internet used to be.

I would sign a change.org petition to keep the chronological feed, I don’t know how they expect the site to be usable without it.

I don't want ANY of my devices or social media platforms to have AI. I want browsers to be backwards compatible for the older OS's. I want websites to not require me to have the LATEST browser version. (Just make shit backwards compatible by default.) I want my grocery store's website to not have 2FA just for me to place an online order, making it more secure than PayPal or my bank for some reason. AND I want a chronological feed on my social media sites that actually SHOWS ME MY FRIENDS/FOLLOWED POSTS without ads, suggested content, AI schlock, auto playing videos, and BS.
That last one? Tumblr is like the only one doing anything close besides Dreamwidth.
I don't want my cellphone to have AI I want it to have 3 days of battery time. I don't want my computer to have AI preinstalled I want it to have seven usb ports and high ram at affordable price. I don't want my games to have AI built levels I want them to be so optimized I could run them on a nokia.

today on the train home the guy next to me was on his phone and at one point i saw him go on tumblr and he just had like. a normie dash. like it was all photography. of nature and architecture. he was using tumblr the way a heterosexual landscaper for rich people might use instagram. i actually had to watch his screen for a few seconds to be sure it really was tumblr because i was so taken aback by the content he was viewing. this is why algorithmless websites are so beautiful btw because i genuinely didn't know that this side of tumblr even existed. he didn't even so much as scroll past any text posts.
EDIT: look i'm not going to turn off reblogs but i cannot stress enough that THIS WASN'T A HIPSTER BLOG DASH IT WASN'T AN AESTHETIC BLOG DASH IT WAS THE MOST WILDLY GENERIC COLLECTION OF IMAGES YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN YOUR LIFE. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING OR BEING A QUIRKY FANDOM TUMBLRINA WHEN I SAY "NORMIE" I GENUINELY MEAN "SO NORMAL THAT IT CIRCLES AROUND TO WEIRD". CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME? HELLO?

Hello! My partner and I are proud to bring you all a BlueSky Bloodweave feed! Anyone can to contribute to the feed. All you need to do is put either #bloodweave or 🩸🔮 somewhere in your post for your work to show up!
For those of you unfamiliar with what a BlueSky feed is, it’s what you use to follow topics you are interested in since you can’t follow/subscribe to hashtags on BlueSky like you can on Tumblr or Twitter!
Please be aware we are still tweaking it so if it goes down, it’s not you—it’s us haha

Tumblr made a follow up post that chronological feed *wasn’t* going away about 6 hours later but it’s probably going to be weeks before this situation blows over. They could’ve clarified that right at the start and saved a lot of trouble.

Today, our firm hosted a CLE about mental health and substance abuse in the legal profession. It was a well-done presentation, trying to fit the breadth of a decades-long systemic issue into a neat PowerPoint while keeping it at only one hour long (not .1 more or .1 less).
It feels like a pointless uphill battle. You're asked to make 2100 billed hours per year (or more). As a junior associate you need to achieve perfection - but you don't even know where the standard is, not yet, you're too new and you're trying your best. You're asked to attend non-billable CLEs and networking events and participate in bar associations and look ahead to business development and go out with your colleagues and socialize with clients in non-billable events and. and. and. You know who at the firm is an alcoholic - maybe you are too. You laugh at jokes about online gambling - you know the partner who gambled away his last paycheck, and he's laughing. You know who's filing for their third divorce. Who's about to lose the kids. Who missed their son's state-level championship game because they had a call with a prospective client (he won't forget, he'll never forget).
But they ask you to take care of your mental health (but you're chastised if you don't respond to the 1am email from the partner within 10 minutes). But they ask you to take care of your physical health (but there's a beer fridge in the break room). But they ask you to practice well-being (but they expect you on-call 24/7). But they tell you to get enough sleep (but the junior associate got less than an hour because of the partner's poor planning). But you need to look out for signs of mental health concerns in your peers (but you're also thinking about dying).
I could write a novel on this. Many attorneys have written similar ramblings, articles, studies, surveys, so I don't really need to. It's a problem. But there's been no real attempts at change. Sure, yes, there's awareness. But billable demands keep rising. So do standards in not just federal court, but state court. But you're at a firm that pays so well you'll endure whatever demands they put on you because that's just too damn good to lose. But you feel like shit every day. But- hey, well, the partner has been doing this for 45 years now. Why can't you?

Lily: wait, I don’t get it, explain the joke
James: but if I explain it then it’s no longer funny
Lily: I doubt it’s funny anyway so get to explaining

I know people talk about how Tumblr is great because you can view the dash chronologically and use the search pages chronologically and such, and I love this about it, but I worry that we've set the bar so low.
And I worry that these days, Tumblr is still driven more by algorithm than not.
How many users on the site have their dash configured to display chronologically and non-algorithmically? How many people take that extra step of hitting the "Latest" tab instead of defaulting to the "Top" tab any time they do a search? How many people discover the bulk of their posts through these non-curated, non-algorithmic methods, vs. through top posts, recommended posts, or the curated/algorithmic posts that appear at the bottom of the screen when you view a post on someone's blog.
I look at the notes on my posts and I have a sneaking suspicion that it is still algorithms that are driving which posts blow up and which ones don't. People don't seem to discover my old posts as much as I'd like and as much as people used to back before curated feeds were a thing on Tumblr. But certain posts seem to go viral without a clear reason of how or why, it's almost like people are being recommended the posts somehow.
And I don't like it. It scares me that here, this one weird site that seems spared from the worst of the entshittification of the social media sphere, that it still seems a bulk of the people here are still ruled by the algorithm.
So what about you? Do you reject the curation and algorithms as wholeheartedly as I do? Or am I in a small minority here?
