On Your Cue, Starlight
Tumblr media
Ever the perfect performer, he'll wait for you~ (probably)
*please click for better quality tumblr nerfed this entire post >_<*
Hi @kibbits!! I was your secret santa this year, made you a lil something with your BAL fella! saw you ALSO enjoy the nutcracker and jumped on making something related to that hehe
I imagined this at a point where they're starting to test the boys out with actual shows, and a form of the nutcracker ballet would be perfect for it! Y/N (slightly nervously) takes the role of a clara-eqsue character, with Sun being the Nutcracker and Moon of course playing the mouse king which leads to, interesting, battle scenes haha,
had a lot of fun sketching ideas for this and making it overall, tried to incorporate a few little things from Sun's coat bc it's SUCH a fun design like asdkfhs (didn't know sun in a big coat was everything i needed in life but APPARENTLY, i was wrong)
also, wrote a brief little synopsis/drabble below to provide a little context ^-^
i hope you enjoy!! merry christmas & happy holidays!!!
(drabble & process pics below the cut)
The lights are bright, and even from here you can feel their warmth. Usually it would be more of a comfort to you, but at this moment it feels almost too much. The music plays from the speakers, having been given a recent touch up after months of begging for improved equipment. There's little chatter from the audience, they're far too invested in the performance, which again would be a great thing if your nerves weren't on fire.
Your eyes flick back to the animatronic in front of you, not moving even a centimeter out of place, waiting for your cue. Though really, it's the shift in the song, you almost think that regardless of whether you were ready or not he would pull you into the spotlight to complete the scene.
He knows his role, ever the perfect performer, as he was made to be. The role of the Nutcracker is fitting, in a way, for him. While obviously not a prince cursed to take on the role of toy solider, you imagine being locked away in a closet for several years provides a similar experience.
You take a deep breath, you've been preparing weeks for this. Months really, when you consider how long it's taken to get to this point, to an actual show. You can't let them down, can't let yourself down. All the hard work, the re-imagining, the late nights spent debating, sewing, painting, chatting, maybe even bonding—all of it leads to this. It's amazing how a few seconds can last for hours.
The song lifts, you take his hand.
And so it begins.
hehehe, anywho, process and such is here for those who care to see it :D

I keep seeing / hearing this "fact" every Christmas Season
And it drives me to distraction (in large part because I bought into it, and repeated it myself, without thinking, for a long time):
"Christmas is actually Pagan, because The Bible says Jesus was born during Lambing Season (when the shepherds watch their flocks by night). And Everybody Knows lambing season is in March - April. So: ha! Gotcha!"
And this is repeated by both neo-Pagans, who want to claim that their religion was somehow "stolen" by the early Church, and by Conservative Christians who dislike the secular, party atmosphere, of contemporary Christmas celebrations, and are seeking to (literally) demonize those practices.
But a few years ago, a question popped into my head (I forget exactly what prompted it):
"Lambing Season in Northern Europe is in March - April. But Jesus wasn't born in Northern Europe. When is the (or was) the Lambing Season in Bethlehem?"
First, I looked up the breeds of sheep native to the Middle East, and the most common, ancient breed of sheep in that part of the world is the Awassi Sheep (DuckDuckGo page of image search results). Then, I looked around for breeding & lambing information. According to this 2011 abstract, the ewes can mate in April (not give birth), all the way through September, and their pregnancy is about 5 months long.
So lambing season could've been anywhere from September through February. And the tail end of December is comfortably in the middle of that.
So yeah, maybe December 25 was Jesus' birthday.
As someone who is no longer either Pagan or Christian, this isn't really any of my business, anymore, I suppose.
I just get annoyed by the implicit bias of: "The whole world looks like my back yard. And all of history should feel like my childhood memories." ...Especially when it's coming from people who are otherwise talking about history and or biology.

Just cuz there's Yoda slander happening; my biggest issue with him (and most of the Jedi council/masters) is how he expected traumatized Ani to just Get Over It™ once at the Jedi temple

Was listening to VHSCCS with my dad while we were decorating and at one point during one of the songs (I don’t remember exactly where) he just said “sure, Clark," and I was just so taken aback that he actually knew Clark Baxtresser’s name? Can I consider my dad officially indoctrinated into the Starkid cult now because he’s now just picking up members names without me telling him who they are?

Lalla Ward makes a brief appearance as Lady Augusta, intended bride to an ill-fated aristocrat, in A Ghost Story for Christmas: The Ash Tree (BBC, 1975)
#fave spotting#lalla ward#doctor who#a ghost story for christmas#the ash tree#1975#romana#romana ii#spoilers for the ash tree ig????#i mean it's pretty obvious from the outset that Ed Petherbridge's aristo is not in for a good time#i mean he's a Jamesian protagonist for one thing....#lalla had been acting since the beginning of the decade‚ with a fair number of one off appearances on tv and the odd film to her name#(most notably Hammer's Vampire Circus). she was still a few years off DW and genre immortality at this point#it isn't the most rewarding role; James (who i don't think many would argue that he wasn't a bit of a chauvinist) rarely featured#significant women characters in his work (a large number of them being academical in setting didn't help). actually the ash tree#is something of an outlier in that regard‚ as it does feature a significant female character in Mrs. Mothersole‚ but we can hardly consider#her a positive feminine presence... actually one of Lawrence Gordon Clark's regrets about this particular entry in the Ghost Story for#Christmas canon is the failure of him and writer David Rudkin to make a true villain of Mothersile; Clark felt that their shared sympathies#for the historical victims of witchhunting prevented them from capturing the 'evil' of the character (tho it's debatable how much James#himself intended her to be truly evil; this is just Clark's opinion after all‚ and fwiw i think Rudkin's greater complexity of the#character is more interesting‚ more believable and more appropriate)#i rambled. anyway yes‚ not a meaty role perhaps‚ but Lalla sinks her teeth in all the same and in just a few brief scenes successfully#creates a vivid and fully realised character‚ a charming and flirtatious fiancée with something of a rebellious streak#no ash tree post bc i made one the last time i watched it a couple of years ago
