Art as love, communion, and play - what an extraordinary conversation on creativity and seeing the world through another's eyes with @trillianewbell, @andrewpetersonmusic, @johnhendrix (@wustl_official). They're amazing! Is Children's Literature Just for Children? IG Live hosted by @VeritasForum Part 1: https://www.instagram.com/p/CPY7om3Fbca/ Part 2: https://www.instagram.com/p/CPY8pwyF_Rp/ Part 3: https://www.instagram.com/p/CPY9csEFLb9/ "If you think of art as a triangle between God, yourself, and others, art is something you can make that be a connection, a kind of worship between you and God, the art piece can connect to others, and then through that art, others and God can be in communication. So art-making and art-ness are kind of this magical intersection where I just believe we can express things we can't express in any other way than that secret Elvish, as Tolkien might say." -John Hendrix @therabbitroom #iglive #childrensliterature #childlit #yalit #kidsbooks #christianthought @waterbrookmultnomah @abramsbooks @moodypublishers #bookgiveaway #readersofig #creative #creativity #art https://www.instagram.com/p/CPZCbO7BMoK/?utm_medium=tumblr

❤ Queen of Hearts ❤
------- Would anybody like to buy a print? I am thinking of printing some if someone wants to buy. 🤗 ------- I recently saw the Peek-a-boo mv of Red Velvet and I am intrigued! I kind of like the genre and their red crowns inspired me for this piece. They reminded me of the red hearts and  I loved Joy and Selugi 😍 and Irene is just 😘

Author: Cynthia Lord
Publisher: Scholastic Press 2006
Grade Level: 5th to 8th grade
Summary:
Catherine, a 12-year-old girl, wanted a normal life, but then she has to come up with a set of rules for her little brother. Her little brother is David. Catherine tends to be embarrassed and mortified when her brother acts out. To try to control his actions, she comes up with these rules. She started writing these rules due to her brother being diagnosed with autism. Catherine has a sketchbook that she writes all the rules out and new ones so her brother has somewhere he can look to remind him about them. While coming up with rules and struggling to care for her brother, Catherine also begins struggling with finding her own self.
Thoughts:
The book is written through Catherine’s point of view which gives the story more of a realistic feeling. She shows us how she is struggling to have some sort of social life while trying to help with her autistic brother. With having the story told in Catherine’s point of view it gives other students some way to relate to her, especially the families that have a member that has a disability. Within the story, Catherine runs into other characters with disabilities, like Jason who is in a wheelchair and cannot speak. The relationship that forms between Catherine and Jason helps her understand and strengthen her relationship with her brother David. This novel demonstrates the hardships and struggles that individuals might be going through when having a sibling that has a disability.
Classroom Activity:
There are many activities that could relate to this wonderful novel. The whole book is trying to have children understand how important it is to “be kind”. I would have this book as a book club reading and create journals about how Catherine might be feeling and what she is learning throughout her story. This will have student think critically and deeply about the meaning behind Catherine’s story about the struggles with her brother. Another activity I would implement while reading this book, maybe as a read-a-loud to the class, is have every student have a little bucket or bag around the room where other student can write kind messages anonymously. This will have students think about others and what they might be going through to hopefully write something nice to make their day a little brighter. After reading the novel, the class can promote kindness around the school and become friends with the special need’s students. This will create a community within the school or even just the classroom and give these students a new sense of the world to see that not everyone is alike, but it’s important to be kind.
