Cassandra Cain knows how to read people. Every twitch, every micro-expression, every sway of their pupils.
She knows people better than they know themselves. She could pick out a person’s life without having to speak or hear a single word from them.
Language, without a sound.
Honesty, complete and unwilling, at her fingertips.
David Cain had beaten it into her; to observe, to read, to kill without protest. She was never a daughter to him- even if Cassandra hadn’t understood what love or being a daughter meant before she met Bruce- and she understood that.
There are scars lining her body, truths carved into her flesh that she knows she could never truly hide. But that’s alright. She’s learned by now that no one can read her quite as well as she reads them. Not even the metas. They notice it, of course, the tells and the twitches. But none of them could flawlessly put everything together like Cassandra could. They focus on the big things, like heart beat or sweat or flickering eyes. Cassandra takes note of the twitching fingers, the stances, the breaths, how lax their legs are, or which muscle groups are bunched up. She figures things out about them far before they even have a hint of her outer workings.
Cassandra Cain knows there is subtle faintness to her frame, a wildness lurking beneath her skin that she’s never going to be able to tame completely, the ways in which she leans that betrays her time as a starved and feral street kid. She also knows that no one will ever know the extent of it unless she allows them to. It’s nice, having that security.
It’s also lonely, that no one will understand her the way she understands everyone else. Well, until Danny Phantom.
Just like how she can see the scars left on him by people he trusted, the marks of crackling electricity behind a boy who should be dead, he also sees her. The training, yes. But Danny Phantom also sees the pavement like side to her where it should have been downy feathers. He sees the wildness prickling at her fingertips, the violence set in her bones.
And he still smiles at her anyways. His acceptance is screamed to Cass, though simply relaxed to anyone else.
Cassandra glides over to place a hand on Danny’s shoulders and squeezes twice.
Yes, she tells him without a word, spoken, you’re my little brother. I am not alone anymore.
Yes, she tells him without a sound passing through their eyes, we will protect you.
Danny beams up at her as the rest of the family relaxes. She still feels a thrill when she realizes (not belatedly, only slow comprehension) that they were waiting for her verdict.
She sighs in relief. Message received. Danny, eyes glowing green, leans back to rest on the couch.
He shrugs at her with a sincere grin.
And he even says thank you.
And he meant it.

I don't have the imagination to make long and elaborate comics, so take these scenes:

Bill: Okay, secrets of the universe, how do you take care of a baby?

"AHORA TIENES BRAZOS!!!"

Typical Steve

Intentado vestir un triángulo chubby (el tema de su corbata y bombín lo veré mas adelante-)

Bill: Ohh, you're liking your new play ground now, heh?
(Quadrangle of Qonfusion from Journal 3)
Tumblr media
Steve: Here I brought your king's cape, Bill
Bill: Perfect! That painting will look great!

Bueno, mi mente prefiere que Steve siga siendo un niño, asi que hasta ahí nos va el asunto familiar de Bill y Steve 🤷🏻‍♀️

Un "aprendiz" gratuito, adorable y casi obediente / A gratuitous, adorable, and almost obedient "apprentice"

The Holy Trinity : project "Apple", "Eden" academy and "Garden"
In Genesis, the apple from the Garden of Eden is most commonly known as the fruit of knowledge and, to this day, we know Project Apple created experiments such as Anya (mind reader) and Bond (future seer). I'd say reading minds and seeing the future count as being "very knowledgeable".
Meanwhile Eden Academy is an elite school, represented by an apple on the students' uniform, in which parents of specific elite children (Imperial Scholars) have secret meetings (which Donovan has access to, thanks to Demetrius).
Also, as we know, Donovan studied there (and at some point gained telepathic powers too) and Henderson's flashback also taught us that there was a lot of war propaganda in the school back then :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, there is Garden, a secret organization, more of a legend even to a spy like Twilight, but who has super strong (no mental inhibitors ?) and probably indoctrinated soldiers, like Yor, working for them.
Eden Academy used to be pro-war and is today one of Ostania's most elite schools, super secret Project Apple wants world peace (probably meaning for Ostania to be in charge of that "peace")...
Tumblr media
and Garden, a seemingly Ostanian organization, desires "to keep this world beautiful".
Tumblr media
The link between all 3 can probably be summed up as "knowledge is power", which also sums up Twilight's entire mission as a spy for Westalis, trying to know what war Ostania (via Desmond who is confirmed to be able to read minds) is planning.
Lastly, the fact Anya's powers may be related to the use of classical language, a dead language most likely only taught in elite schools like Eden nowadays, is one more argument linking Eden academy (knowledge) and Project Apple (intellectual power).
As for Garden, they seem to specialize in physical prowess but if Yor's strength was indeed enhanced, surely it required a good amount of specific knowledge to unlock her mental inhibitors (and then to indoctrinate her).
(I'd also like to point out that Garden describing the world as a "beautiful place to protect" makes even more sense considering they probably took in several war orphans like Yor and made them "useful".)
TL;DR we don't know entirely how yet, but surely there is a link between Garden, Eden Academy and Project Apple and, according to Project Apple who wants "world peace", surely that can only mean war.

Dc x dp idea 93
Ra forces Talia to sacrifice her son to the ghost king. With his obvious re-awakening he most solidify the deal. It’s how he was gifted the Lazarus water in the first place.
Newley crowned 15 year old Danny did not want this child. Like at all. He’s already dealing with parents who want to tear him apart. That reveal didn’t go well at all.
Danny couldn’t take care of himself let alone a stabby 6 year old. The only good thing is he snatched the kid before he was killed by his scary mom and stinky grandfather.
By ancient law. This child belonged to him. Not only that, the child was bound to obey him. Found that part out on accident. He was tired of the murder attempts and promptly told him to knock that off be quiet and sit down. He’s ashamed to admit it took him at least two hours to realize Damian couldn’t talk or stand up.
Yea.
He’s taken to internal dialogue after that little hiccup. He later learned sign language had no effect. Apparently it had to be verbal. It’s not his say to order anyone around. He doesn’t care what the crown means. They were fine without pariah they’ll be fine without him.
At least while he’s still half alive. Despite what the council says he doesn’t need a legal guardian. He’s perfectly fine homeless.
So here he was with 9 year old child and on the run from the government, his parents, and the royal council.
Now when a man in a trench coat tries to expel the ecto-ghost to free the “boy” and the child. Well. He asked for help.
This leads to a dna test. Danny ignored how he had been told Batman by Damian it was of no help. Danny hadn’t even meant to ask, knowing Damian would be forced to answer. His mother must of lied to the poor thing.
With a shocking result, the father was Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne can reclaim his son, but Danny can’t simply hand him over. Something of equal or greater value has to be exchanged.
Obviously Bruce Wayne is happy to make a deal.
Danny just goes. Well either i need a legal guardian as the ghosts are on my butt about it and my parents want me dead. Or. A government organization taken down for trying to eradicate his species.
He gets both.
Damian and Danny refuse to tell anyone why Damian was sacrificed to him.

I love being multilingual. I love reading books so much. and I know most of langblr and bookblr is about academia or classics but my heart is in children's literature. I grew up with my own language and my own country's literature. I get to have my childhood favorite books in my language. and then as I grow up and learn others I get to enjoy other people's childhood favorite books. sometimes I've progressed enough in my language to enjoy those foreign books in their own original language and be filled with joy as I realize how this would have shaped a generation of people. I get to go "what is this word" and look up and have a spark of joy as I memorize a BIG word in a new language. I get to gasp at reveals and twists and turns and fairy tales and romances and horrors of all your children's literature because my language level is still progressing and every new word fills me with wonder. I get to have my childhood and I get to have other people's childhood through my childlike language abilities. I love it. I love reading books!

learning what all of Foul Legacy's noises mean.
learning the language of the Abyss is... not your forte, to say the least. you're okay navigating old texts and books, matching the faded words and symbols to ones that you know, but the growls and chirps of the monster you found is another matter entirely. he's a peculiar beast- at least, for someone from the Abyss. rather than attempting to claw your face off or electrocute you to death, he prefers curiously sniffing at your hair and clothes, poking delicately at your skin and letting out little trills and coos. he's not trying to harm you in any way, merely circling you a few times to examine you up and down before curling up and leaning against your crossed legs. there's a click and a chitter of interest at the sight of your notes, idly scribbled any chance you had to hear him speak.
chirps, trills, and chitters are akin to normal conversation and answers.
coos are happy, cheerful, or teasing responses.
growls, hisses, and snarls mean threatened or angered. however growls can depend on the tone- occasionally they can be playful.
croons are soft and gentle, an expression of affection.
body language and movements are very important- fluttering wings is a sign of happiness.
the pages are littered with question marks and your own personal musings, even a couple of doodles here and there. the monster tilts his head, claws just barely resting on the thin sheets of paper, not nearly enough to tear. his glimmering, star-speckled wings flitter and twitch just like you've seen before, as if he was entirely overcome by joy, joy from seeing you put so much effort into learning his mannerisms and habits, despite just being an Abyssal beast. he croons sweetly, nuzzling his head against your cheek and snuggling closer to you, the ray of sunlight who came his way. your new friend settles, both in your lap and curled around you, with a contented huff, and slowly, quietly, he begins to purr.
your eyes widen, and your pencil begins scratching away again, describing one of the loveliest sounds you've ever heard.

so depressing i was shopping and saw a child no older than one and a half clearly not even walking or talking yet in a pram with a phone in front of their face watching cocomelon or whatever the fuck, like your child cannot even comprehend language they do not need to be stimulated like this they should be looking around at the world and learning!!!!! some people are just so terrified that their child might make a noise or ask for something so they plant them in front of a screen to be seen and not heard. do you not realise that a child crying or making noise is them attempting to learn to communicate with you???!! if every time they do that you instantly distract them and overstimulate them you are going to seriously hinder their development like please just don’t have kids if you’re not prepared to actually let them be children this makes me so sad

any chance you have any recommendations for entry point resources for learning about early childhood developmental linguistics?
Sorry, I've been sitting on this ask for aaaaages. Work got busy lol. Anyways, this is far enough outside my field that I'm also going to give some general pointers on places to start finding information in linguistics on any given topic.
Language and Linguistics Compass is a journal that publishes a lot of fantastic review articles, which summarize previous research on a topic. Here's an LLC article on how hearing kids perceive and learn from phonetic input that they hear.
Academic presses like Oxford, Cambridge, and Wiley often publish what they call "handbooks" on topics where each chapter is written by a different expert in the field who reviews the previous research. For example, there's the Wiley Handbook of Child Language, and there's also the Cambridge Handbook of Child Language. I recommend not trying to sit and read a whole handbook, but approaching each chapter as if it was a standalone article.
Sometimes introductory textbooks can be a good place to start! I really like Essentials of Linguistics because it's free, open access, and online. Their chapter on Child Language Acquisition is a great overview of the research, and can help you choose where you want to go next to read more deeply.
If there's an article that's not open access, I recommend asking your nearest college student or grad student friend to see if they can get access through their university library's online sign-on.
You're also asking about a very big field with a lot of research, so don't feel like you have to get through everything I link here - just pick a couple things and start reading slowly. If you can get through an article or two every month, that's awesome! This can be a fun excuse to organize a reading club with friends/classmates/colleagues, and discussing stuff as you read will help you learn and retain stuff, too.
Hope that helps!

One of my primary metrics for evaluating children's programming has always been "are the kids learning from this?" A visual medium is a perfect place to illustrate the meanings of different vocabulary words, whether by visual demonstration or context clues. Surprisingly, I didn't catch on to the pattern until well into Chaos Theory, but when looking back...Camp Cretaceous actually provides a plethora of good words for kids to learn in a fairly natural context.
Thus, I present:

I know some of us like to pepper Gaelic endearments into our ghostsoap from time to time and I thought hey! Maybe I should finally share my little headcanon as to how Soap even came about knowing the language in the first place:
I like to think that his granny (who raised him and his siblings) was from the Inner Hebrides and grew up using it. She moved to the lowlands after marrying, became a Gaelic-medium teacher. Thus, Soap attended the school she taught at and had a Gaelic-medium education throughout primary. (Gme students are taught completely in Gaelic from p1-p3 with English being incorporated later.) While not continuing it in secondary, he still had a fluent adult at home keeping the language fresh in his mind. That’s. The bare bones of it anyway.
Anyway I wanted to share this because I’ve seen the occasional person say it’s ridiculous to suddenly see him speaking Gaelic in fics (which is a very fair point of course. few people are immersed in it, it remains a threatened language) but the thought of someone who wanted to include it in their work who then might not because of this is disheartening. Should they do the proper research beforehand, it is plausible when given the right ingredients.
It’s a language that should be celebrated, not discouraged, especially given the history. Having a character know it just really depends on the different factors you throw into their backstory. Even if the author doesn’t explain it, it should then be up to the reader to assume he’s not just pulling the language out of thin air. Idk, if call of duty fanfic of all things can expose people to Gàidhlig and garner interest in some to learn a bit of the language, I just. That is a good thing

What do we think about reader with cuteness aggression?? Like, before meeting FL they'd bite and squeeze basically anywhere they could reach on Ajax daily if not multiple times a day. After meeting FL the urge is strong, but I'm pretty sure human teeth should just hurt if reader were to bite at FL's armor. So they just... simulate biting affectionately at him.
i've said this before and i'll say it again- biting and chomping and gnawing is a love language
i like to think that Ajax also has a form of cuteness aggression that manifests mostly in very tight, firm hugs. he quite literally squeezes the life out of you and lifts you off the ground, burying his face into your neck- if he wasn't already standing he would've kicked his feet with glee. Ajax grins widely when you wrap your arms around his waist in response, biting down on his cheek just hard enough to leave faint marks. before you know it he flops over onto the couch, tugging you close and giving you another squeeze, your spine popping from the sheer force as you suddenly remember why he's the Eleventh Harbinger, except here his strength is being used to hold you tight rather than maim and kill. all you do is return the favor with delight, gnawing on his arm as Ajax lets out a loud, rambunctious laugh
Foul Legacy is different than Ajax but the same as you, often giving you loving nips and idly nibbling on your fingers- but you can't bite him back!! his armor is too tough, hurting your teeth when you attempt to chomp on it, and Legacy whines when you pout in dismay. you settle for lightly clacking your teeth against his hand, not hard enough to hurt but enough to satisfy your need to affectionately gnaw on him. Legacy chitters and lightly bites your cheek like he's seen you do to Ajax so many times, earning bright, bubbling laughter from you as you give him a tight squeeze- or, as tight as you can hug an Abyssal monster. he doesn't really feel it that much, being very solid and large, but he can feel your warmth and presence, his wings practically vibrating his content happiness
