AU where Beetlejuice and Lydia are rival ace investigative reporters working for different top newspapers. Beetlejuice writes for The Deceased Dispatch and Lydia writes and does photography for the The Spectral Spectator. They’re always trying to beat each other to the best ghostly/grisly stories abouts hauntings and exorcisms and monsters on the loose. More often than not, they have to team up for dangerous assignments. They have grudging respect (and sexual tension) for each other.

One of The Old Guard for today from the #parallelscomicproject ! Farsight is a hero from the 1990s who was pretty popular back in the day, but has since hung up his hero mantle to get into more legitimate work: the police chief of Westgate City. He’s not so sure about the new generation of heroes, but he won’t go out and arrest them for doing good, as long as they don’t interfere with police work. Fun fact: Farsight’s daughter and Ben are on the same vigilante team ✌️

When Commander Atekka ordered my squad on a scouting mission to the Burning Shores, I had my doubts. Was this a death sentence in disguise? Exile?

Fashav, sensing my unease, took me aside and let me in on the truth: the mission came from Chief Hekarro himself. The Chief wants a detailed account of the region and whether it can be claimed to expand the Clan Lands. As one of only two in the tribe capable of writing such intel, I’ve found myself uniquely positioned to lead this mission.

We reached the Burning Shores after a long and arduous journey south. The archipelago instantly called to mind the Isle of Spires - broken ruins reaching to the sky while crumbling structures jut out from the ground - but that is where the similarities end.

Machines prowl the jagged landscape. The air is thick and tainted by smoke, while our scouts speak of rivers of fire beyond our camp. Curiously, there are no signs of other tribes. We may very well be the first to set foot in this wild land. If anyone has come before us, they certainly did not last.

While there is a strange, lingering beauty to this place, the ruins will be impossible to fortify against the machines with anything less than an enormous force - more than the Chief would be willing to spare, if rumors of a renegade Marshal recruiting an army in the desert are to be believed.

It’s clear there is nothing for us here. In the morning, I’ll give word for us to move out and return to the Lowlands. Let the machines have this forsaken place.

Paddy's regret at ending up in prison that second time is just so cruel, because if he wasn't there maybe he wouldn't have joined the SAS. Eoin wouldn't have died the way he did. But Paddy, faced with a second charge and being parted from Eoin and maybe never seeing him ever again because Eoin could very well die in this war and Paddy would be left behind...

Fuck the whole missing out on the action thing, it was missing out on being with Eoin, and that forced separation with the threat of permanence, that Paddy was thinking about when considering the offer. He's a man of strong, immovable principals. He'd endure whatever was thrown at him out of spite.

But losing Eoin? He's the only aspect of the equation that makes him falter; Eoin's the one person he regretted being parted from and couldn't bear to be without. Eoin's 'if you jump, I jump', yes, but Paddy will jump out of a burning plane without thinking twice in order to be with Eoin. He will leap, and pull Eoin with him to his death.

Of course, he doesn't know that.

Not until it's too late.

Progress report

I recently had a new idea for a guide chapter, which hurray! However this one might require more worldbuilding so I will need to figure that out.

However!

In my document sorting I also found the beginning of another chapter which... I completely forgot about lmao

So I will try to work on this one first and see how it goes. Maybe I will update in the next few days, it depends if my muse is generous or not.

I'm excited going back to writing the Guide, I missed the sillyness and Chief being a super dramatic bitch.
