Robert Moonbrow, Cleric of Pelor | Sole Survivor & Dogmeat
Photography by David Ngo at C2E2 2024
- - - - - - - - - -
Hello, Tumblr!
It's...certainly been quite a while, hasn't it? OOF. I really apologize for the unintended hiatus.
I was at C2E2 in Chicago a couple of weeks ago with some updated costumes, and figured I'd share!
Friday and Sunday I wore my Sole Survivor costume from Fallout 4, with plenty of extra weathering and proper strapping since I slapped it together prior to Halloween last year. I made the Dogmeat Heavy Dog Armor for my actual German Shepherd(Caboose), but since he's not a service animal(please don't bring your pets to conventions), I wound up purchasing a close-to-life-sized plush version that the costume *mostly* fit on. The number of people who did double-takes and "thought it was a real dog" was staggering, so I guess I did something right. Also, Sunday of C2E2 is always touted as family day, so the number of kids that came up asking to pet my dog was adorable.
On Saturday, I wore my D&D costume: a half-elven cleric of Pelor of my own design. I adore Dungeons & Dragons, and as an homage to nearly playing with the same group(multiple campaigns) since 2002, I made my first character Robert Moonbrow. I debuted this back in 2022, which revealed some issues with my design, so those fixes were made(mostly reinforcing the straps to prevent stretching and to reinforce the area around the rivets since all of the armor is EVA foam) as well as a heater shield I never got around to finishing, which turned out great, with the exception of being able to see the wrist straps through the foam on the front. On a whim, I decided to enter the Crown Championships of Cosplay this year, ReedPop's costume contest. I had zero expectations of anything, since people have no attachment to original characters other than the person making it, but I worked insanely hard on this thing, dumping probably close to 1,000 hours into the costume overall, and pushed the boundaries of my skillset to make something I was truly proud of out of a love for the fun my friends and I had with our time together. I didn't win anything, but it was genuinely great just to be in the same competition as the others who entered with their insane craftsmanship and attention to detail, and I do mean that, sincerely. We had a great time talking shop backstage during the competition and admiring one another's costumes.
Will I ever compete again? Probably not. It kind of eats up the entire day, and it takes me forever to make a costume in general, much less one to compete with. If I ever did, I might consider revamping my Grey Warden Alistair costume or something, but it's an extremely low priority. At the end of the day, cosplay is just a fun hobby for me, and adding extra stress with competition prep and anxiety kinda sucks some of the fun out of it, even though it was a fun and new(at least at this level) experience this time.
This is the only convention I'll be attending this year, much as I absolutely miss all of my friends at Dragon Con and would love to attend. I haven't been there since...2018? Oof. My friend Darryn said he'll be there in 2025, so I made the promise to him that I'll be there, which means I'll be bringing Alistair, since we became friends by cosplaying the character. I would also love to bring my D&D costume, but it's not exactly a cool and comfortable costume, so I'm going to try to test out its comfortability in the heat by wearing it to the Bristol Renaissance Faire on the Wisconsin/Illinois border at the end of July this summer(Saturday, July 27th is the plan). If you're in the area and want to see it in person or say goodbye to me as I potentially die of heatstroke(kidding!(hopefully...)), feel free! Fingers crossed the weather holds out that day for a solid test.
Anyway, time for me to shut up! Enjoy some additional shots from C2E2 2024:

New cosplay alert! I'll be wearing Toph Beifong at the Cosmeetup Chicago event this weekend. She's been on my list forever so it feels awesome to finally whip this costume out 😁
This was my first time building a cage wig, thank you so much @gormasmus for advising me on this build! I learned a lot and she's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy overall. I'll probably play with restyling it a couple times after the event until I'm satisfied.
I'm excited for the live action series and new content coming out, here's hoping it's good!

1. Were you named after anyone?
I named myself after Alex Hirsch and my first theatre director! Alex is a very gender-neutral name, so that's why I picked it!
2. When was the last time you cried?
For sad crying, probably a couple weeks ago, but I was laughing so hard I was crying last week!
3. Do you have kids?
Nope. Hate them, never want them, and yeeting my uterus as soon as I can.
4. What sports do you play/have you played?
I did tee-ball as a little kid and absolutely hated it.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Yeah, but not like all the time.
6. What's the first thing you notice about people?
I know this sounds vain, but a lot of the time I'll notice (unintentionally) how much acne they have. Idk it just kinda happens.
7. What's your eye color?
Hazelish, but when doing character creators I usually use grey!
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings 110%. I HATE horror movies, except for campy musical ones (LSOH and RHPS, for example).
9. Any talents?
I can make Perler bead sprites without tweezers! I can do them with just my fingertips.
10. Where were you born?
Chicago suburbs!
11. What are your hobbies?
Sewing, crafting, cosplay, writing, reading, playing video games, performing on stage, and learning Japanese!
12. Do you have any pets?
Not at the moment, but my moirail and I want to adopt a Selkirk Rex cat once we get our own place!
13. How tall are you?
5'4"! Or about 163cm for those in metric.
14. Favorite subject in school?
Currently, I'm minoring in Japanese, and it's a lot of fun! But for high school, cooking classes were my favorite!
15. Dream job?
If I can work abroad and be a part of the costuming department for the Takarazuka Revue, I think I can die happy XD
Tagging these people, and anyone who wants to participate!

That record was broken less than two weeks later, at the second “Donda” event, which attracted an additional two million viewers. This one ended with West ascending to the ceiling in a harness—or “flying”—amid an epic light show. At the third and final event, in his home town of Chicago, a masked West performed in front of a replica of his childhood home. Then he set himself on fire, and unmasked himself to meet Kim Kardashian, on stage, who wore a Balenciaga wedding gown. In front of a bewildered audience, the former power couple again “married.” The scene concluded an operatic, multicity experience, which had somehow felt both precariously improvised and hyper-curated.
The “Donda” events—a blur of red, white, and black; fashion, flight, fire, home, wedding ceremony—were prime for headlines, memes, retweets, and TikTok takes. It was an innovative hype model, one that leveraged the rapidity and multiplicities of late-capitalist new media. Throughout this period, Kardashian continued to dress in Balenciaga, sometimes wearing outfits that resembled costumes from “The Incredibles”—monochromatic body suits, thigh-high boots, and eye masks. The superhero cosplay coincided with the next chapter in her career: a nine-figure deal with Disney. That year, the Kardashian-Jenners ended their E! show and signed on to star in a new reality series, “The Kardashians,” on Hulu, a streaming service owned by the Walt Disney Company.

Sept 20 2024
Meow meow, greetings all this neko boy is feeling alright. I am having one of those oh I don't know what to do at this very hour. I am early or late I don't know to sitting down in the living room and writing out this entry. I am listening to music by BabyMetal. Oh speaking of BabyMetal I purchased a Baby Metal T-Shirt from Aliexpress yesterday. I also purchased a cat cosplay collar and another T-shirt from the same website. Meow today is kind of a normal average day. My dad was up for a little while today and now he's back to laying down. I don't know what's going on with him or he just normally like this on the days he's off. He is usually around doing stuff but I don't know. When I move out there will be a whole lot things different. I mean I hope to get a place close by the bus line so that I can go places instead of being stuck at home. My mom took my niece and nephews to their home school stuff and to a field trip and won't be back till before 3pm I think. I am not really sure what's going on with my mom and the niece and nephews usually they are back before now. I am having my smart watch charging so it isn't on my left wrist heh. Meow so I had taken Kylie outside on a walk a couple of times today. First was our usual morning walk and then a short one to check the mail. Meow I didn't have any Ramen Noodles today as I usually do but I had some left overs for a snack. I don't know I just have to eat something around 1 pm. Meow this neko boy has been talking to my best friend for a while now. It is really to bad that my best friend who I talk to on a daily basis lives several States away. It would kind of be nice to hang out with my best friend. Nya this neko boy is hoping that I don't have to wait forever to get my stuff from Aliexpress that I purchased yesterday. I know that I will get my figurine that I purchased last week Monday in the mail. Right now my figurine is in Chicago IL. Meow well I am kind of looking for apartments for rent on a couple of websites on the right side of my screen hehe while I am typing this entry. i am kind of looking for apartments under $800. Anyway I think I will close out this entry for now. There's nothing really else to talk about right now. I might post a couple of pictures after this entry. Until then later.

19 January 2023: Dom Flemons Presents Black Cowboys, Dom Flemons. (Smithsonian Folkways, 2018)
I never got into the black string band Carolina Chocolate Drops, beyond loving one tune by them, “Day of Liberty,” that appeared on the 2013 various-artists comp Divided & United: The Songs of the Civil War. I don’t quite know why I didn’t explore the band itself, but that track was enough to get me interested for a while in the solo work of member Rhiannon Giddens. Last fall, my friend Al posted a song on God’s Jukebox by Leyla McCalla, a cellist and banjo player who served in the Carolina Chocolate Drops for a couple of years; I was intrigued enough to read more about the McCalla solo album it came from, and I wound up buying that album, Breaking the Thermometer, on a post-Christmas trip to Milwaukee, and listened to it a lot in January. Like many projects done by musicians in the Carolina Chocolate Drops circle, it has a historical bent; McCalla’s album is an examination of her Haitian roots as well as serving as a soundtrack for a multi-disciplinary stage production about Radio Haiti, the first station in the country to broadcast in the native tongue of the country’s downtrodden. The station was such a boon to democracy that Haitian tyrants constantly physically attacked the station, eventually murdering the owner.  I describe it here because this page was on hiatus when I bought it and I won’t be posting about it. Listening to the musicians in this circle is often going to be an interesting learning experience, and the album I’m posting here is no different.
Dom Flemons, another member of the now defunct Chocolate Drops, has here produced a double LP of historical songs from the wild west, focusing on the contributions of the countless black pioneers who helped build the country. It’s part of a series of albums by the Smithsonian Institute called African American Legacy Recordings, also connected to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The aforementioned Rhiannon Giddens and Leyla McCalla are also part of an album in this series, Songs of Our Native Daughters, alongside likeminded musicians Amythyst Kiah and Allison Russell. I may have to buy that as well.
In the second half of the ’90s, I was in thrall to old-timey historical recordings. This was prompted by the widespread release of Harry Smith’s 1950s multi-volume bootleg collection The Anthology of American Folk Music. I bought that box and carried on buying as much of the stuff as I could afford. I was often interested in black history, as well, and by the late ’90s I had started a graduate program in which my major research was devoted to black history, focusing on the Civil Rights movement. If I’d been able to have an album like Black Cowboys at the time, I would have loved it. (Actually, now that I think of it, I might have spurned it for being new recordings by a modern dude rather than archival performances, but today I’m less of a pedant about that.)
Above we see the front and back covers of the Black Cowboys album.
Below is the opened gatefold. As you can tell, Flemons likes to dress in period garb. This borders on cosplay to me, but I shouldn’t split hairs about it.
Tumblr media
Here is the booklet. It’s an odd size and shape for a vinyl release; it’s taller than a CD booklet, yet not as wide.
Tumblr media
Below is side one’s label. All four look the same.
Tumblr media
Right after buying this, which I was thrilled to just find languishing in the folk section of my neighborhood store, I learned that Flemons now lives here in Chicago and it turns out that I just missed a performance by him. He appears to play here a lot, so maybe I’ll get a chance to see him before long.
Now that I realize I’m interested in multiple members’ solo work, I may need to make an effort to hear some actual Carolina Chocolate Drops albums.

Back in Chicago for Wizard World! The wifey went casual Starfire day one. She went all out for classic Starfire for day two. I went as my usual Nightwing. I'll post a few more as I see them. I was able to hook up my phone to my belt for easy camera access, but I never think to actually take the pictures. Not photographically inclined I suppose.

STUFF FROM TFCON CHICAGO 2022!!!!! 💖
About the cosplay: It's Hawk!!! 🥰 And hey!! I did a much better job than Halloween last year I think 😹✨💙 This was what I meant talking about the variation thing in my last art post btw~ I had two people recognize my character!! The joy I got from that was undescribable 😩🙏💖
Tumblr media
About the con itself: OH MY PRIMUS I'D BE HERE ALL DAY TALKING ABOUT EVERY COOL THING I SAW 😭💜 Let's just say that I was incredibly lucky to find the stuff I got, and I'm grateful to have gotten it (yes btw that is a screenshot from a tiktok I made about this, I'd put it here but Tumblr is really weird about posting videos so....check my TikTok ig? 😳) // It was truly awesome to see all these figures and things from shows I barely see anyone talk about yet which I care deeply for, NOT TO MENTION THAT EPIC TABLE OF ENTIRELY VINTAGE JAPANESE G1 STUFF WAAA 😭🙏💕💕 So yea, I got a lot of cool stuff, I met some ppl (including a nice conversation with the actual Aaron Archer!! He signed some stuff for me and even left doodles with the signatures!!! Like a smol Unicron or an Optimus!!! That was very cool 😌✨) I saw a lot of cool cosplayers who I didn't have the courage to talk to, but I'm glad I could admire all the creativity and passion from afar :] And the panels!!! Were all very interesting!!!! The Peter Cullen one was awesome, and the script-reading one at the end of the day was also very fun!!! I read for Minerva's part in the audition period, and though I didn't get it, I enjoyed that little moment! Plus, the person they ultimately chose did an amazing job with the script!! ✨ It was purely just cool to even see Minerva on that screen for a while--tbh, we stan the Masterforce rep I saw all throughout the day 😩💖🔥 or, well, I stan that...😳✨
About Meeting Peter Cullen: In short? Surreal ✨🙏 So, I'd signed up for an autograph when getting the tickets for the con! And that Optimus you see up there is the thing I meticulously drew as the print. I wanted it to be something special, so I literally poured my heart into that...tbh, it did turn out quite nice!!! ^\\^
From here I'll repeat exactly what I said in my Instagram post: Though brief, I'll never forget those couple moments. I was able to tell him that theres a lot I struggle with, but that Optimus has always been a real friend to me, and I thanked him for the role he's played in my life...after he signed my print, I asked to give him one, and then mentioned actually, I'd drawn these, and he was so impressed. He read the captions on the banners aloud and said "That's Optimus alright!" (I was grinning like an idiot sjsjsj) & before I gave the copy, he asked *me* to sign it for him 😭 the highest honor for me as an artist ngl 🙏 Reading my name, he said he was glad to have met yet another unique individual like myself...before leaving, we shook hands and he told me I should keep going, that I'm doing great. I couldn't stop smiling as I left.
....
So basically, Saturday was a dream--in fact, many dreams came true Saturday. Thanks, TFcon Chicago, it was a wild and fun ride I'll never forget~

Okay, home from the con, peeled off all latex, makeup, wigs, and cosplays, and in comfortable clothes for the first time in like three days and about to pass out after barely sleeping for three days, but here's the highlights (also I promise this is my last post about it, I just had a really fun time and am laksdjfakds about it)
Day one we're on our way to the con throwing on wigs and putting on makeup in the middle of Chicago traffic, somehow did not die
Me and my friend's husband cosplayed Shinji and Kaworu while she was Asuka and since people sometimes assume me and my friend are dating I thought it was funny that it was me and her husband who were the "couple" cosplay that day lol
The person who shouted "Get in the robot, Shinji!" at him and then disappeared into the crowd, never to be seen again
At one point a guy came up to us and was like "hey my friend wants to know if he can get a picture with you" and we were like "Oh yeah ofc!" and turned around and he was cosplaying the fucking Seele sound box (I did not fully register there was a person inside of it at first but oh my god)
After recharging in the hotel for a bit we went to the rave and it was a good fucking time. Lots of jumping and screaming and dancing and there was a mosh pit. Could have done without the Asuna cosplayer flashing everyone her whole underskirt area while getting grinded on in the middle of the mosh pit but eh, what are you gonna do
Helping my friends get into their super complex league of legends cosplays the next day (I conquered the world's most intense safety pins, let me tell you)
My best friend's pure and utter excitement over the full Freddy Fazbear cosplayer
About twenty minutes after arriving at the convention center on day two a Denji cosplayer came up to me and asked for a picture (I was cosplaying Makima) and we took one and then he goes "okay, I have another request, and you totally don't have to do it if you don't want to, but you know how Makima calls Denji her dog..." and then he pulls a whole leash out of his bag so I got to put a Denji cosplayer on a leash. Man got down on the ground and everything lmfao
Watching my friends walk around in their funky little bird feet all day for their league of legends cosplays
Somehow?? Someone??? Double-booked a rich kid's prom at the convention center? So all these high schoolers showed up in formal attire and were so fucking confused and horrified by all the fucking nerds and cosplayers over-running everything
One girl literally huffed at us when we walked by and her boyfriend pointed at us kinda excitedly lol Ruining prom for stuck up bitches even after my own prom hellll yeah
Today we cosplayed Maki and Nobara so fuck yes hardcore kinnie moment
I encountered a Toji cosplayer as Maki and we got some fun pictures together :D
I bought a Sanemi keychain from an artist and as she was wrapping it up, she goes "By the way I love your Maki cosplay. You must really like angry characters, huh?" and I almost fucking died
Encouraging my friend to finally ask Goru cosplayers for photos after she spent the whole weekend staring at them because she loves Goru
My friend got to meet a famous cosplayer she's been a fan of for a really long time, and she was super cool and just sat and chilled and chatted with us for like 30 minutes
Peeling the Maki makeup off of me in a panic in a Denny's parking lot half way home because we weren't gonna subject the poor staff into wondering what the fuck was going on
Anyways, it was an extremely fun weekend. I haven't got to go to a con since I was still in high school and a family member had to take me and didn't want to do anything/just made fun of everything. So actually getting to go the whole weekend, cosplay, go to events, and do it with two friends who were having just as much fun as I was was amazing :D

The mission Chicago review nobody asked for:
- since this was an officially licensed con there was no artist’s alley which was not surprising but was disappointing
- related to this, there wasn’t enough to do outside of panels. I perused the vendors the first day, and had seen it all by the end of the day
- that said, though there wasn’t much aside from panels, all the panels I attended were wonderful! I did science panels on day 1, by 2 of the science advisors on disco, and I could listen to them talk all day they made it sound so interesting and cool
- day 2 I went to the lower decks, disco, and strange new worlds panels, as well as George Takei. Lower decks was a highlight of my weekend, the cast was an absolute riot, and we got to see season 3 footage. It’s gonna be so good guys. Also someone asked Mike McMahan about how lower decks “keeps canon so much better than all the other new trek shows” and Mike had a very diplomatic and respectful answer to a question that should’ve stayed in the asker’s head
- disco panel was also so good. The cast all seem like such lovely human beings and I got emo at a few of their answers. I actually ran into David Ajala shortly after the panel and I told him I loved him as Book and that disco got me into trek and it meant a lot to me and he was so sweet and he gave me a hug (that he initiated, I would not request that from someone I do not know)
- George Takei panel was interesting but it was a lot about his life and not as much about trek. He did throw shade at Shatner which I appreciate. Some guy at the end asked his opinion on some weird department of homeland security policy which was so strange
- strange new worlds panel was…interesting. We got to see footage, which was awesome, and the cast seems lovely, but the host was very strange and made some uncomfortable remarks re Anson Mount (we all know he’s a dilf but be less weird to his face). And there were so many out of pocket questions, the low light being a guy who asked about Uhura’s actress’s gender and also brought up Spirk fic and asked Ethan Peck about queer Spock. Also somehow the last question was asking Ethan peck about halo 4
- there was so much cool cosplay and also for some reason at least 2 furries???
- there was a photo op that was sponsored by NFTs. Booooo NFTs I got some cool pics tho
- I did not go to day 3 as I went to the aquarium instead
- overall I very much enjoyed the con but really wish there had been art, tho I understand why there wasn’t. Also I think there needs to be some kind of question moderation in the panels. I do not at all regret going, but also probably would not travel specifically for this in the future as long as there continues to not be art. Solid 7/10 overall (but 10/10 weekend with a couple lovely friends)
