Expanding upon my previous Graz'tchar post:
It's so funny how little effort graz'tchar was putting into lying to chetney. Like, it was lying so blatantly and obviously, and escalated it's "the council of taldorei is corrupt" bs so quickly. 0-100 real fucking quick
And it's not like the sword is a terrible liar. It contains the essence of the demon lord Graz'zt in it, the literal prince of indulgence and seduction. The sexiest demon lord out there. It has a charisma of 18, insight checks made against it have a dc of 26. This sword knows how to lie good. And still it put the least amount of effort possible into lying to chetney, presumably because it thought it was funny, and that's amazing
#this sword truly does not give a fuck#its just here for the ride#and the chaos#and i respect that#i really hope it shows up again later#every interaction with it is hysterical#and id love to see it eventually drop the act#so we can get some sweet sweet grazzt action#graz'tchar my beloved#graz'tchar#chetney pock o'pea#critical role#cr spoilers#cr meta#campaign 3#critical role spoilers#bells hells#Graz'zt

one thing you can say about aabria iyengar is that any character she makes slaps so hard. any of them. hot powerful ladies with an innate sense of self and sometimes dubious morals. not a single miss. i admire the commitment to divorcing the cr cast, and her sitting with travis and sam again is so exuc to me. silly goofy table with super interesting character dynamics. this time it’s both of them that can kill her super easily, with sam as a new friend with fundamentally different beliefs and travis as the ex.
things we know about deanna leimert:
the coziest gnome--knits, wears a big blanket/sweater and uggs, and carries around stew.
unique laughter
reluctant cleric of the dawnfather
had a fling with chetney ~200 years ago
came to uthodurn, made a family with dustel? and then died after being attacked ~10 years later
still has a thing for chetney, but ~it’s complicated~
lowkey a monsterfucker
resurrected by a high level cleric of the dawnfather ~2 years ago, met FRIDA, and started adventuring with them? we still don’t know exactly what they were up to
lowkey dweomer & laerryn energy. if i had a nickel for every time aabria iyengar played a powerful divorced spellcaster with a loyal aeormaton companion who was present around an apogee solstice i’d have two nickels. which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice
was happy in an afterlife for ~200 years and got pulled from it. the implications of the rest of her life and family moving on are so spicy. i love the character concept. direct contrast to laudna in terms of the resurrection itself.
the idea of waking up to see your partner, older, wiser, and beyond you at this point in your life is so messed up. waking up, feeling like an obligation, a completed promise (to whom? may i ask), and a relic of a time long passed got me really hard. she had a relatively happy life, died, and came back only for everything from that period to hurt. she came back exactly the same, but the world changed in her absence. it’s like that one post that was going around about bringing back your dead wife and you’re insisting that she came back wrong but she’s just normal. coming back to a light type of magic and a connection that you can choose to pull on based on who brought you back.
vs laudna waking up alone physically and coming back ‘wrong’, combining innate magic and a pull from someone else. opposite side of the coin in magic style, all shadows and eldritch energy. no obligation to a past life, but being chased out of the places that you made for yourself. a deep trauma associated with your death and the place that you lived before. your body and countenance stuck in the same state that you died in, so your magic takes on more and more reminders of your death. your family sent you to your death and you never see them again except for within the confines of your mind.
i don’t know if we’ll get a laudna & deanna interaction soon, but i so want them to meet and talk about it at least a little. I want to see how imogen continues to react to deanna for these UBH episodes
fiercely defensive of FRIDA and quicker to judge chetney based on past experiences, even though the rest of uthodurn bell’s hells (UBH) did try to warn them
definitely in a weird place in terms of the gods. the thought of faith as batteries or food for the gods is very very similar to ludinus’ comments in that long monologue:
“The greatest lie ever told is that we need them. We are their gardens, their cattle. They created us to feed them with our faith, our hope, our souls. Lapping up their fables, give them form, purpose, control.”
also the concept of the gift of rest--while coming more from FRIDA than deanna, i think applies differently from two characters who experienced that and were pulled out of an eternal rest. very much self-projection energy that i’m getting. also, powering the gods off is distinctly different from eating them, but has a little bit of a similar taste.
thoughts for the future:
i think this is going to be an opportunity to introduce another couple of factions. that fact that we’re up to three clerics in a six person party is giving me inklings of getting into vasselheim or at least some religious drama, post-chetney backstory. there’s definitely some god-indifferent sentiments in the party, and BH’s most religious people (fcg, and to a much lesser extent orym) are separate and can’t compare notes. aabria and christian are taking them on some kind of ride going forward.
also the idea that D has been awakening and shipping aeormatons all over the world. the ones we’ve seen so far have had some interesting experiences with the gods--a holdover from aeorian thought about the gods? if aeormatons and other aeorian weapons/tools of artifice were being designed to kill the gods that has room for some fun and spicy exploration going forward, if UBH goes to aeor.
i hope that these trial of the take style episodes let us have these characters for a little while. they’re meant to contrast and be foils to chetney and fcg specifically, but the interactions with fearne and imogen have so much potential, and i can’t wait to see where they go.

Thinking about how my favorite moments from c1 and c2 are in the second half of their campaigns and how c3 is now in the beginning of their second half and has had some truly iconic moments recently and they’re at level 11 so they’re really getting into the juicy character levels and starting to vibrate with excitement over where this campaign might be going

The avatar reference was to much for me. I loved that Matt made the gliders his own thing. He brought a newer approach to that I would have never thought.
Meanwhile, Travis and Merisha were having time of their lives.
I watch this show for the narrative.

ep 110 one of my favourite bh eps in a While. episode catered to me specifically actually. (liam mimicking the stefon snl sketch voice: this episode had Everything) an episode that includes downtime that still engages with the limitations of that downtime both above table and in character wrt imogen being like What Do You Mean Y’all Are Getting Drinks & the cast being like When Are We Leaving and there not being a set answer but there also not being true Free time. appearances from both temult parents in the form of imogen reaching out to them. interparty ideological conflict over the notion of saying goodbye. vindication of my read of ashton's character in his exchange with the titan where their insistent refutation for the gods because no one should have that much power was elucidated in its inconsistency by their immediate seeking an answer in a higher power that he likes better and accepting some uh, what could be politely described as fascist-aligned thought in that exchange. in character goofs. orym and imogen quiet check-in amidst the chaos. excessive dirty jokes about a titan's asshole. fearne and jester meeting. allura appearance. laudna’s playful but questionable morbidity. chetney and imogen antagonism. fjord stone. bells hells being theatre kid idiots. veth horny for a minotaur. the mighty nein in general my beloveds. all culminating in actually feeling like. Psyched for next weeks episode and not just lightly intrigued to see this story through.
#fearne and jester being one of my top If Characters From Different Campaigns Could Meet#and then laura and ashley Immediately rping them meeting and shaking hands and ‘you’re so beautiful’ and matt in the cooldown pointing out#their joint chaos slay#i am now just manifesting so hard about fjord and imogen interaction#i’m truly so happy tho man what a fantastic ep.#critical role#cr3#cr spoilers

In the course of a couple of conversations I think I have hit on some of the fandom weirdness this campaign, and it's notable because I realized it when it was my answer to both a question about why the fandom response to "Party of NPCs" was pretty negative at the time but I don't think it would be now; and someone pointing out to me how there was a sudden massive spike of enthusiasm for Ashton and Fearne as a ship without a particularly large corresponding boost in any sort of fan works.
I suspect that many of the people who came to C3 as their first CR campaign came through the avenue of shipping; either because Shadowgast and Beauyasha both broke containment to some extent; because of TLOVM (which as a scripted TV show where they know the relationships and how they shake out, there can be foreshadowing), or because of the influxes of people shipping Imogen and Laudna circa May and September 2022. This is in contrast to Campaigns 1 and 2, where a lot of the fanbase came via D&D fandom, fantasy fandom, voice acting fandom, and more general word of mouth. This time, people showed up to ship; of that segment of the fandom, shipping is a major if not the primary way in which they interact with fiction.
Here's the truth: this is a terrible campaign for shipping, and indeed, one of the worst shows for shipping I've seen in a while. This, to be clear, is not a critique of quality. It's merely an observation that this is a terrible campaign for shipping specifically, but a great one for many of the myriad other reasons why one might watch long-form actual play. It's plot-heavy, with a pretty intricate network of laid groundwork over eight years of storytelling, two past campaigns, and two miniseries finally paying off. It's been heavy on showing the unexplored corners of the world in Marquet, rural Issylra and the Shattered Teeth. It's taken risks with the typical D&D campaign structure and with party composition and splits, to varying degrees of success. It's allowed a revisiting of beloved NPCs and locations from the past. It's the lore campaign! It's extremely not the shipping campaign.
I think most people have picked up on that by now, even if it's only subconsciously, and so those who watch with the express intent of shipping, are grasping at the most tenuous of straws because that's pretty much what they have. Two canon ships and one noncanon but hinted-towards ship are with guest characters who are not present and so are necessarily very quiet. Chetney and Fearne is a lot of fun but it does not fit the usual shipping-above-all preferences of monogamous love to marriage/partnership to babies, plus Chetney is weird and old. (This has always been an issue with this mentality, incidentally; for all I think the popularity of Shadowgast is why some of these people are here, the fact of the matter is that many of the people who like Shadowgast like a completely foreign to canon concept operating under that name that erases the frequent long-distant nature and the almost certain lack of children and the deliberate choice to end the relationship amicably due to different needs.) However you may feel about Imogen and Laudna it is incontrovertible that there's been little to no movement in what is now a calendar quarter. And so: two people doing something that is not explicitly romantic while two other characters say "emperor and empress" is a paltry, miniscule - and I hate to use the word but no other will do - crumb; but it is a crumb to a starving populace.
In case my feelings aren't abundantly clear...I say let them eat cake. I enjoy ships and shipping! I enjoy seeing characters recognize themselves through the other and develop over time as they fall in love with another character; I enjoy seeing a deep romance unfold slowly so that I can savor it. But this campaign just doesn't really have that, and that's never been the most significant reason I watch, let alone the main one. I'd rather have no romantic relationships in a work than rushed ones that strain credibility or lack chemistry, and those who do want romance can either find other shows, or focus on transformative work. For those who came to Campaign 3 on the basis of rumors of the great romances in Campaigns 1 or 2, those are still there for you! And while I think we're too far in for a campaign-length romance, there are plenty of ways for the existing ships to become something more interesting. But I think this explains a lot of the weirder patterns in the fandom conversation as of late.

Random C3E113 bits and thoughts
The magic of editing on Sam's ad
"Silver Saddles"
Lionel being -possibly- a duck that was true polymorphed by Scanlan will never stop being funny
GOD DAMN THE COCONUTS ALA MONTY PYTHON FOR THE CENTAURS SOUND
Oh no, Percy and Vex conversation with Keyleth really got me
Old man Trinket!
"She's fenomenal at letting go"
Of course there's been conversations about Vex keeping Percy in the locket so he doesn't die of old age. The couple of all time those 2.
They remembered Junie and Wax! (Wax, damn it, I mean, if you have to find a way to shorten Wildhand'ildan)
Meat Man: Imports and Sexports
Cerkonos being Scanlan's biggest fan will never stop being funny. Bless Robbie for the way he took over the character and gave it a personality.
MAN, INCREDIBLE DICE ROLL. HAD IT BEEN CHETNEY, HE WOULD'VE DIED. THANKFULLY IT WAS GROG.
Of course Percy didn't wanted to leave Whitestone undefended, and also, had his doubts about sending troops with guns to fight
J'MON SA ORD MY BELOVED!
So the troops are arriving to the Malleus key basically in "Avengers: Endgame" final battle way.
FUCK YEAH, LIAM'S BACK AS LIEVE'TEL
I was waiting so much for the moment that Vex would break the news of Bertrand's death to Lieve'tel
I love how all these chucklefucks still behave as always among themselves, and then had to put their more regal faces when talking with Bells Hells or the rest of the world. And I know it's because there's a difference from them being player characters to Matt playing them as NPCs. Don't know if it was planned or not, but it certainly works.
"can you make the noise?"
Celestials!
FUCK SHIT UP
Man I hope we'll see one day this scene of the gathering of forces animated -and that they have enough budget to pull it through, cause there's a lot of characters here-.
Trinket <3
Amazing that Sam still has the old giant tankard
Look at you Essek (also, hilarious that Vox Machina has no clue who he is, even under disguise as Seth)
And Essek's brother is here too, aka, HOT BOY N°2
"I write poetry"; "That's fine"
"Keyleth, can you sign my tits?"
Oh the goodberries
XANDIS!!! I love that he now has to stuck around Vox Machina
Oh Lieve'tel, the silver bell was a memento from Bertrand
Don't remember where I read it, but it's amazing how Grog takes over Travis whenever he's playing it, a sight to behold
Oh how I've missed Scanlan's songs
Oh that map with all the minis is awesome. At this point it's gonna end up looking like a Warhammer map with all the minis.
Matt's gotta have a full box of minis just for Keyleth's transformations
Also, love the new Vox Machina minis
"There's some horse in this house"
The Krin Dinasty troops fighting remindes me of the elves at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring
NO MERCY PERCY!! Of course his first attack is a NAT 20, and also, of course his walking cane is a sword that's also a gun
That was the most Grog thing that could've happened
"3 headed white raven as a planar ally", Lieve'tel's not playing around
Nothing more on brand for Kiki than accidentally burning the Krin soldiers next to the Vanguard ones. But hey, fog of war
OPAL HAS ENTERED THE CHAT!
I wish Aimee had been there, but they might've need a bigger table for 10 people
Devo'ssa's new mini is so pretty
Grog's so OP that he made quick work of the vidulch almost as if was nothing. Gotta love high level barbarians.
Well, that was a great episode. I'm so glad to have Vox Machina back, at least for a couple of episodes.
