Bishop Chess Piece
Scandinavian
1150–1200
The Bishop was introduced to the European chessboard in the 12th century, replacing the elephant of Islamic tradition. The substitution of a man of the church for an animal used in battle may seem curious, but medieval bishops frequently served with armies. That role is not on display here: the smaller figures probably represent men who served the Bishop in ceremony. An official known as a Reader holds the Bishop’s book. He has been tonsured—his hair shaven in a circle at the crown of his head. The man holding a staff and cradling his ear may be the Precentor, who was in charge of the choir.

Wake up, babe – new chess piece just dropped.
This is apparently a knight (known to connoisseurs as "the horsey"), but it looks like a guy going O_O
Got a couple transparent ones for your meme-ing pleasure:

Medieval chess, or medieval Kinder Surprise?
As mentioned in the previous post, chess originated in India and early chess boards often included a bishop. When the game was popularized in northern Europe, the original pieces continued to be used, although they lost their meaning or were reinterpreted over time. The elephant's tusks eventually became two bumps. Eventually, elephant, chariot, and vizier pieces were given names of officials at northern courts: bishops, knights, and queens. These transitions and designs happened in different ways in different places.
An interesting piece that showing one moment of transition, acquired by Musée de Cluny in 2011, has the abstract elephant shapes with bumps on the outside-- plus a surprise bishop holding a crozier and a book on the inside!

This single pawn, ready for attack, is my gf’s favorite illustration of the chess series. My goal was to exaggerate realistic armor forms while still maintaining its overall pawn-ish shape. Tonlets, as it turned out, were the perfect piece of armor for this. Also, I gave it a polearm, because of course I did. No swords allowed!

Chess King Mickey
126/365 #checkmate the mouse
In the halls of the checkered king sits a emperor made of marble. He seems out of place, out of sorts, as if he is not the monarch in charge...
I am making 365 new versions of Mickey Mouse for the public domain and releasing them under public domain all year long.
You can join the initiative to #hunt the mouse or suggest a theme yourself via my ask box.

Chess Piece, Knight
Islamic
8th–10th century
Caliphal decrees prohibited the playing of chess (the pieces of which are customarily figural) for iconoclastic reasons as early as the eighth century. It is likely that chess pieces of the abstract type, such as those exhibited here, replaced the figural ones in order to circumvent those decrees.

I'm a sucker for medieval aesthetics and fucked up little monarchy systems so I've thrown my hat into the ring and made an OC for @sm-baby's story Piece By Piece!
Meet Null! She's a pawn for the minimalism chess kingdom. The design is very human. /ref
She's a sweetheart, just... very off-putting to behold. Looking at any of the folks in her kingdom is like looking at a living, breathing mannequin.
(All of them are like this, with little variation between pieces aside from the King and Queen.)

The elephant's gambit
The layout of the chessboard that Europeans know today-- with rooks, knights, bishops, queens, and kings-- was not the original line-up. The game of chess is reputed to have orginated in India, and spread via the Middle East to Europe. According to the Persian poet Ferdowsi, early chess sets involved a king, vizier, elephants, calvary, chariots, and infantry. (See the Met's Spring 1975 Bulletin).
Today this 7th- or 8th-century chess piece is held at the Met Museum, where it is still categorized as... a bishop.

Stay tuned tomorrow for how the elephant became a bishop! Medium: Ivory Date: 7th–8th century Origin: Western Islamic lands? Now Met Museum, 64.262.1
