Hey [ father ] , it seems that [ brother ] is already done for, he's insane He's convinced the doll is [ his other half ] [ His soul has already been claimed by death and the flames of hell ] I'm now his only [ brother ], but Hey [ brother ] , look at me Look at me too!

Through the flames, N yells a name, though he's not sure who he wants his voice to reach.

The wayward child he has grown to love like a brother, manipulated into a mindless machine,

Or the lifeless body in their arms, quickly crumbling into ashes as they descend into hell in a waltz.

He figured he would not reach the smaller of the two, a slaughtered lamb already consumed by the flames- but if he could save at least one of them from what his father had done, then N would be grateful to the gods above.

"Cheren! Cheren-" Something catches the back of his throat- and he's horrified at the sight of dust circling the other's legs. "Cheren! Snap out of it!"

From across him, Cheren Piper stops in his dance, tearful, empty eyes gazing back at the false king.

"N," His tone was curt, just as it had been the past few days. "What are you doing here?"

"The Numbers-"

The wall of cards surrounding them glows brighter, flames flickering.

"You can't handle what they're capable of! The Numeron Code- it's not yours to wield! Can't you see?! Your wish is corrupted! You've sacrificed innocents for your desires!"

Stretching out his arms to his brother, he pleads.

"Let go of your ambition, and come back to us! Please!"

For a second, he was a fool who believed mere words could pierce through Piper's ideals- ideals that he had clung onto since his very youth.

Ideals he would fight tooth and nail to achieve.

Ideals he had shared with someone of utmost importance; his other half.

Piper snarls, and in his arms, Cheren Slater is no more than a pile of ash dusting his arms and shoes, his gray cardigan and ribbon being the only proof of his existence left.

"You must be joking," He hisses, holding onto the cardigan tighter. "Throw away everything I worked hard for? For what? For you?"

"Please-"

"As if! Everything I've ever done, everything I've given up on-"

A chance at being a professional duelist, a chance of a normal life, the smiles of his childhood friends, a place to call his home-

"It was for me and Slater." His mad grin returns. "And I made our wish come true!"

"No!"

The wall of cards glow an angry red, tainted by the dreams of a broken star; unwilling to allow N to reach his brother, they form a barrier around him and the cardigan he hugs closely to his chest- a cardigan he believes to be worn by his partner.

Slater's ashes filled the air- and N was choking on every last bit of him, as if he was being reminded of his inability to save even the one Piper claimed to be his other half.

And without that half, Piper was going to break into pieces.

Through the eyes of a madman, Piper looks down at the article of clothing- and he sees his friend's head nestled under his neck, fearful eyes fixated on N's form.

"Leave," He hugs the illusion close to him protectively. "You're scaring Slater."

"That's not-!"

"Leave us be! If you're not with us, then you're just like the rest of them!"

His voice is drowned out by Piper's growing laughs- and the flames that surround him and his illusions.

N is dragged away by his sisters in a panic, claiming that the other is too far gone to be saved.

The taste of ashes on his tongue, the smell of smoke, the sound of Piper's laughter and the sight of their bodies burning-

It becomes a haunting memory N is unable to forget.

Do you plan on adding more Pokémon League fankids?

I’m unsure if you mean adding more kids who work for the Pokemon League (as Gym Leaders, Elite Four, etc.), or kids who are the children of canon characters who work for the League of each region. To both, the answer is probably yes, but for the question related to kids working for the League, I’m limited by the fact I haven’t decided what a lot of the fankids do past their mid teens. As of this point, the only ones I know for sure work for the League are Micah, Neil, Dylan, Yumi, Gunnar, and Solaris.

As for fankids that I consider “Pokemon League fankids” (children of League members), I already have quite a few.  Even after listing all of the established ones below, there’s still another 10ish I’ve considered adding that would fit in the below list

Leo and Skyla: Skyla could fly Festus and Leo could tinker with the planes and they both love the cannons in the gym. Clay and Leo: Skyla brings Leo with her to the Gym Leader Meetup which is in Clay’s gym this year because she wants to show him the bridge and Leo gets bored and builds a huge awesome mining robot and Clay is like “well you young’uns may be good at makin’ robots but you ain’t as good as my pickaxe” and that’s it that’s their relationship

N Harmonia and Nico Diangelo: I feel like N would mom-friend-adopt Nico (my headcanon is that post game he just went to live in a trailer in the festival area where he keeps a ton of plants and lives the Millennial Life (tm) where he doesn’t have a lot but he keeps succulents and loves his dog Stoutland so when Nico comes by looking Sad he takes him in and they eat some ramen together and talk about things and Nico becomes his friend because there’s only a couple years age difference and N is the supportive friend who Nico goes to for dating and adulting advice and when N realizes he’s aroace and wants to do Pride Nico takes him to pride

"He's awake."

The sight that greets Cheren Slater is not the sight of his older brother, or the sight of the doctors.

He finds himself in an unfamiliar place, one too isolated and unfit to be properly called a hospital room- a medical ward, perhaps.

The presence of medical tools brings him a sense of relief, but the multiple monitors lining the walls do not.

Hovering above his bed, Cheren Piper looks down at him with a twinge of worry, but it all disappears when their eyes meet.

An unfamiliar blonde in a lab coat and glasses observes them, clipboard in hand. A doctor, maybe; he dressed the part.

"You're awake."

"Piper?"

His head throbs. Piper helps him sit up gently, adjusting his pillows to support his back.

The pain spreads from his head to the rest of his body- try as he might, he couldn't so much as move his fingers

"What happened?"

"It's a long story," His friend says with a sad smile, rubbing his back. "I don't think I can tell you now. Not when you're like this."

"But if you must know the essentials," The blonde approaches, clicking his pen. "You were in an accident. We've just taken certain measures to ensure your body- and mind, were able to recover."

An accident?

Looking at himself now, Slater realizes he wasn't in his usual fluffy cardigan; a loose baby blue sleeve hung on his arm, sickly pale and wrapped in bandages.

Questions race in his mind, his anxiety starting to grow. The cold, stoic gaze of the doctor didn't help.

Piper realizes this, and gently wraps his arm around his friend's body, pulling him close in an embrace.

"It's going to be alright," Piper says under his breath. "I told you before, right? I'll always be by your side."

Slater's chin rested on his shoulder. He sees the doctor push the glasses up the bridge of his nose, before turning on his heel and leaving the room, mumbling something to himself.

"Slater," Piper continues to speak. "I know you're scared now, but I promise, everything will make sense soon. I just don't want to overwhelm you, you know?"

Slater would have responded.

But he found himself unfocused, eyes dancing around the monitors on the walls, even as Piper whispered reassurances and promises, holding him tight in an effort to comfort.

Slater wouldn't doubt his best friend for a second.

But whoever was holding him was not his partner.

...

"Ghetsis! Ghetsis, you son of a-!"

As if to mock him, the scenery of the real world plays on the sky above him.

In the vastness of the virtual world, Cheren Piper found himself alone, with only the duel spirits of his deck to keep him company.

Though Ghetsis' body in the real world found itself teetering between life and death,

That old man.

He turned on his promise.

He betrayed me.

He took his body.

"Slater! Slater, get away from him! That's not me-!"

Slater pulls away from the embrace of "Piper", brows furrowed.

He opens his lips to say something, but is unable to keep his consciousness much longer.

"Slater," Ghetsis speaks in Piper's voice, hands placed on Slater's shoulders. His voice rings throughout the virtual world- even if Piper tried to hide from his reality, he would not be able to escape the horrific truth. "You should rest for now. I'll call Doctor Colress to check on you."

That fucker-!

But as he turns to leave, Slater, after a few seconds of pondering, grabs his sleeve.

"Piper,"

No.

"That's not-!"

"Can- can you, ah, stay? For a bit? I- I don't feel safe. Something, um, I think something- or someone, is watching me."

Piper sees the way his body's fingers twitch.

"Of course," Ghetsis answers so easily. "I'll stay as long as you need me to. After all,"

If Piper had his body now, his nails would be digging deep into his skin, drawing blood.

"I promised you, didn't I?"

It was futile, but Piper continues to scream into nothingness, even as Slater could not hear him.

"Slater! Get away from him! Get- Ghetsis, can you hear me?! Stay away from Slater!"

It was all for nothing, in the end.

Even as Piper fell into the depths of hell and clawed himself out, he was still a fool for believing in the promises of a serpent- twice.

And Slater would pay the price- with both his number and his soul.
