Afternoon Tea Pt 1
Ru’Yi was not dressed in her uniform but a fine cotton lace yellow gown and ballet flats.
She’d done her hair in braids and pinned it up in a bun and donned blue crystal earrings.
It was a special occasion to have tea with the Vice Chancellor, Mr. Baldwin told her. Few students were invited into that library so she should look nice.
It wasn’t the large library, but a room in the Vice Chancellor’s personal office. A floor to ceiling window let in ample light that shined on several old fashioned globes and towering bookcases, the tops of which were reachable only by ladder. She craned her head up, walking through the door as Finger Von Frings held it open for her.
“The Principal’s office is built on top of the original Cassell Manor,” He said, closing the door behind her. “Hilbert Ron Anjou tried to recreate this particular space from memory. He liked to come here and think about the past.”
She looked up in wonder at the tall man, walking next to him to the table.
“How’s your friend?” He asked as he removed his cowboy hat and settled it on the globe.
“Tom’s...” She paused, considering how to politely put his precarious situation. “...doing better. He says that he’s going to stay on medication for the rest of his life though. They can barely keep him below 50%...” She said sadly. “I’m just...” She sighed. “...glad they can.”
“I’m glad to hear that too.”  He lifted the antique porcelain teapot and poured the hot water into her cup. He then sat down and she followed. “ I’m not much for tea. I’m more of a beer guy myself but...” He shrugged. “...hey tradition’s tradition.”
He picked up a manila envelope from the table and opened it. “I wanted to tell you a little bit about the past and... show you this.”
He slid a photograph from the folder and held out it to her.
It was a picture of a group of people, standing together. They were all dressed formally, some ceremonially. One a man with pale hair stood in a beautiful ornate kimono. Another with a kimono but not as ornate. The rest of the men were in dark tuxedos. “Hey! That’s Mom and Dad! And... Is that me?!”
“You were very little back then. Yeah. Barely a year old.” He settled back leisurely in the chair, letting his legs stretch out. “Recognize anyone else?”
“There’s you. And Auntie Nono and Uncle Caesar. That’s all.”
“That was the first congregation of the Cassell House of Reagents. Shortly after Anjou’s death, we had to figure out a way forward for the College.” He stirred his tea with a small spoon. “Cassell College has been through plenty of dark times. But many would say that what happened before Anjou died was the darkest time in our history. Ever since, we’ve just been trying to recover and praying that a dragon wouldn’t wake up in the meantime.”
“This is the stuff, Dad doesn’t want to talk about.” She said frowning.
“It’s not that he doesn’t want to talk about it. It’s that he can’t. The details of that time are sealed. Confidential. Need to know only.”
She looked at the photo again. “A lot of people seem pretty sad.”
“There are those in that photo who’ve since passed on. Schneider, Manstein... Guderian...” Finger lifted his eyes to the hat on the globe, sadness coming over his face. “...Flamel.”
The names were unfamiliar to her other than Anjou. She kept her silence.
“You’ll learn more about this people later on. Heh.” He smiled a little. “But even before that, we lost a lot of people.” He shook his head. “Friends... long time friends. Some people lost family. A lot of people died. Your parents especially suffered a lot. That makes it even harder to talk about.”
“At that meeting, there was an issue of unstable hybrids that your mother was especially passionate about. They could be born naturally. But a lot of them were actually created by a very evil group of people. They were victims of that time but... the Cassell College still treated the same way they’d treated these hybrids for centuries.”
He shifted in his chair. “You see, back before we had things like Genetic testing, when Hybrids were newly created, they used an alchemical process to forcibly create hybrids. The embryos grew in the natural way, in the womb of a mother. Many of those women died. And even if they lived, there was a chance for those hybrids to be unstable. Those unstable hybrids would grow into monsters. So... as soon as a child was seen to be unstable... it was violently killed. It didn’t matter how young it was.” He said with a slow sad shake of his head.
Ru’Yi swallowed her tea. Trying to imagine a child being put to death.
“Meixiu stood up because she had been unstable but received treatment from an unknown source. She was cured. She said that she spoke for all the mothers who had to watch their children die.”
“She said that going forward, it can no longer be the policy of the Secret Society to destroy unstable hybrids without seeking a cure for them. Technology had advanced. There was no longer any excuse. She demanded that we put forth significant efforts to cure instability.”
He sighed through his nose. “Even now, I get choked up because I know how hard it must have been to stand up and say that. But even then, the old guard refused. The old guys said it was too dangerous. That people would die. That a cure would never be found.”
He pointed to the two Japanese men in the photo. “This here... is Chisei and Chime Gen. She has a special friendship with these two. Chisei used to be High Patriarch of a group formally known as Hydra but is now just the Japan Division. Even though he wasn’t the leader at the time, he was still highly respected by them. He had been on the front line of destroying the unstable hybrids of Japan. He killed dozens... maybe even hundreds of them.”
“So when he stood up and confessed that he still is haunted by his actions to this day and voted her direction? It was like the entire building moved. You could feel history being made.”
Finger’s blue eyes twinkled. “All of the Japan delegates voted his way.”
“Caesar is an old politician at heart, but Chisei is his dear friend. He voted his way as well... and where Caesar goes,” He waved his hand, “...most divisions will fall in line.”
“In the end, you saw a split between the old generation and the new. All the old guard voted to keep things the way they were but... none of the new blood agreed. Cassell turned in a new direction... into the future.”
“There are still those who agree with the old guard. But it’s too late now. Especially with a severe case like Tom being successfully treated, we have reason to believe that the new era will last.”
He pulled another photograph out and held it out to her. “Don’t tell your mom I have this.” He grinned proudly.
It was a picture of her mother embracing the Japanese man. She could tell by the way the fabric gathered in their hands that they were clinging to each other tightly. “Is this... Chisei?”
“Mhm. Maybe someday I’ll get to tell you their story. But it would be better if you heard it from them. After all. I was only there for part of it.”
“Are those evil people still around?” Ru’Yi asked.
“Hm?” Finger’s eyes widened slightly.
“You said.. evil people created unstable hybrids.”
Finger’s eyes lowered. “I don’t wanna say too much. But the truth is the knowledge is out there now. And so long as there are dragons and hybrids and people who want power, there’s a chance one or two will pop up.”
“Dad told me not to ask about what happened after I arrived here.” She lifted her eyes to him.
Finger looked at her in silence for a few seconds then he nodded.
“I’m... unstable?” Fear clawed at her heart.
“No.” He smiled. “You’re not.”
She let out a breath in relief.
“I just... wanted to you to know a few thing so you can feel proud of your parents. So you don’t feel like they’re hiding things from you. They’re not.” He shook his head.
“Thanks, Vice Chancellor...”
“Oh Please... call me Finger! That title is so ... “ He grimaced. “It’s a mouthful.”
“Right.” She laughed.
“So, I’m curious Ru’Yi...” He leaned forward a bit. “Why did you join Cassell College anyway...?”

Something something Cheren constantly comparing his achievements with Hilberts.
Putting Hilbert on a pedestal as everything he should be and everything he wants to achieve. Someone who will most assuredly go down in history as the next champion in Unova's hall of fame. A person who's adored. A person with attention. Someone who doesn't need to try to be liked and succeed.
Whereas Cheren is breaking his back to be everything his parents want of him. To fulfill the ideology they put into him at a young age that success and global fame is a sign of living. Putting up yet another feign of happiness just for that CHANCE of being what he wants. After he nearly flunked yet another exam unlike big brother's straight As. After he flunked the audition to the school play unlike Mom would've.
Hilbert was his safe space. Someone who accepted him and made him feel cared for. He didn't find Cheren weird for his autism and tried his best to help because his parents and the school system certainly weren't helping him. Bianca was his friend too, of course, but Hilbert... was everything to him. A living crutch almost that connected with him in a way his parents and school never was able to.
And like . It's messed up for Hilbert to be this for Cheren. But again, his parents were never there for him and never supported him in the way Hilbert did.
He was his entire world. He adored him with all his heart.
So it felt betraying to him seeing Hilbert far surpass him in his passion. What he felt was his only real, last chance to get that praise from mom and dad. To praise him like they did big brother. It starts out small, simple battles, but then Hilbert always got the badges first, always swept him, always gave him that apologetic grin and tells him "Good battle," without fail.
And so he puts Hilbert with that friendly smile, that friendly air that just makes people come to him, on a higher pedestal. While his smaller, shorter, ever cracking island continues to fall apart.
And each moment, each failure, resentment and questions of why. Why was he better. Why does he have things he doesn't. Why is he leaving him behind. Why can't he be better. Why isn't this fulfilling. Why is he so empty. Why can't he be enough. Why isn't he alive. All adds up.
And yet Cheren puts up a friendly, polite smile, with that almost eerie air around him continuing to surround him. Shakes his hand and congratulates him.
Mom and Dad said its not okay to meltdown with people watching.
This suffering will be worth it eventually.

Lost Time Memory
(Read on AO3)
The noise was overpowering, the yelling, the sound of pokemon cries, the destruction. All in the cold, freezing Giant Chasm, face to face.
“You know what happened was your fault, right Cheren?” stated Bianca, her brown eyes staring daggers at him.
Cheren stared back at the blonde.
“Rosa, Rosa you need to get out of here!” begged Cheren, looking over at his frozen student, trembling as she watched her teacher and Hilda’s struggle against Ghetsis and his team of Pokemon. Kyurem’s were so loud, all as it fought against the Reshiram Hilda had been ordering from the ground, and N atop his Zekrom.
Even Keldeo, who might as well have been as young and as small as Rosa, trembled, looking up at its trainer asking what to do.
Cheren couldn’t focus on the battle at hand, just at his hyperventilating student, who could only breathe and cry and stare off into the distance as she held on to the DNA splicers, the one she herself stole back, like her life depended on it. “Rosa please, listen to your teacher for once!”
She didn't though, dropping the DNA splicers and moving to cover her ears, all as she shrieked.
How could he ever not know what happened was his fault. The sight of their shared childhood friend frozen in the ice of Kyurem in the middle of a castle. It may not have been him who told Kyurem to do it, but it was him who incited Hilbert in the first place.
A sacrifice, an ultimate act of love, in his name, one who did not deserve it. One who stepped on his friend and their friendship and tossed him to the wolves for a promise of strength and his name to be revered across the world.
One promised to him by the devil himself. Strength at the promise of betrayal of his thorn in his side.
Strength that promised his friend would never leave him behind, just as he knew the rest of the world will.
A loud noise grabbed Cheren’s attention, turning his gaze back to the battle at hand. “Odyssey!” he cried, his Bouffalant being thrown off to the side by Ghetsis’s Seismitoad. He pulled out his pokeball, returning the poor cat pokemon to safety.
He turned back up to stare at the man in front of him, biting his lip as he saw the man who haunted him in his nightmares, the one who offered him the fruit of his desire all those years ago. The one who welcomed him into his team and told him everything that happened would be normal, would be ok, because everything he wished for, everything he aspired to be, would be granted if he just followed.
He dove into his collection of pokeballs, following Hilda’s lead. Knowing full well he couldn’t falter now, not when Unova was at stake.
“Come, Astraea!” he yells, releasing his Persian from its pokeball to continue where Odyssey left behind.
“So why are you sad? Isn’t that what you wanted? To kill Hilbert?” interrogated Bianca, slamming her hands on the table. “Because congratulations! Hilbert’s frozen in ice all because he couldn’t bear to look at you!”
His singular glove without its other half will always be a reminder of that. It’s other half was with Hilbert.
Talented, kind, perfect, untouchable Hilbert.
”I’m sorry,” was all he could muster.
His mind was running a million miles per second he almost forgot about N. But a loud blast, the cry of the twin dragons, Hilda and N’s yelling, and Rosa and Keldeo’s further distressed shrieks. Cheren turned to look in either direction.
He watched as both dragons fell to the ground, N holding on to the dragon he’d been riding initially with a death grip all while Hilda ran to the side of her own dragon partner.
Ghetsis grinned, one not unlike his own when Hilbert confronted him inside Team Plasma’s castle.
Cheren didn’t know what to do anymore. He didn’t know if he wanted to fight anymore.
Bianca gritted her teeth, staring down at him with a look that killed Cheren. One he knew fully well he deserved. He wished Hilbert looked at him like that in their last battle.
But no. Despite his cackling and his open yelling about how much he thought about choking Hilbert with his two hands, no matter how much he didn’t mean it. Shrieking that it shouldn’t have been possible for him to escape his cell, crying that he hated him. All Hilbert did was look at him with love, with pity, like he was watching his entire world whimpering in pain in a darkened alley.
He sometimes wished Hilbert had tackled him instead. He wished he took his two hands around his neck, pressed down for however long it took, and left him there, leaving with Bianca and living a happy, peaceful life.
But no. The last thing he remembered of that night was yelling until he fell asleep, collapsing into a familiar pair of arms that held him like he was precious. All to wake up, and see that god forsake pillar of ice with his whole world trapped in there.
A loud clack rang through the giant chasm, echoing off the water and the ice alike, commanding the room to pay attention to the wielder of the cane.
“Enough of this foolishness! Now you four, pay attention,” he ordered, with an almost growl in his voice. He raised his cane, and pointed at the student Cheren wanted nothing more than to protect.
Bianca slammed a fist down on the table, “You’re such a fucking waste of space! If you’re so sorry I hope your guilt sticks with you for all of eternity!” she screamed, storming off.
“Kyurem! Kill the child right in front of you! Once she’s gone, we’ll be able to get the DNA splicers back, and make you whole once again. That’s what you want, right?”
Rosa gasped, eyes widening in further horror as Keldea cried, stepping on its hooves over and over again, running around her to try and convey to her to move. But the girl couldn’t move, she could only tremble like a deer, fear freezing her before Kyurem could even get a chance to.
Hilda and N screamed for her to move out of the way, Hilda moving for her pokeballs and N trying his hardest to urge Zekrom back up so he could fight once again.
Cheren turned to look at his student, staring down the Kyurem gathering its power, all just to kill one helpless girl. A girl who hated him from the start, just as he did. But all the same grew to love him, welcome him into her heart, and rely on him. And when he fell back on his worst behaviors, she grabbed him and pulled him back.
A girl he loved like he was her own.
He saw a familiar man behind her. One with a familiar hat, the same one Bianca carries around like a good luck charm ever since that day, and a familiar glove. One that matched his own.
One that walked him home, one who held his hand as he led him through route one. One who promised his eternal rivalry. One who looked at him with so much pride and joy, one who made him feel like he was the only person who mattered in the world. One who promised he’d always stay beside him even when he wasn’t there anymore.
Yes… he never broke his promise. He's still here.
A man who gave him an act of love he would never be able to return.
He looked sad.
And for a minute, Cheren’s mind became clear.
Hilbert was right next to him.
His mouth felt dry, and his body acted before he could think. Running to tackle the girl who saved him, just as Hilbert did.
A sharp stabbing pain was felt through his body, and he could feel every cell freeze to a halt. The world became blurry, sounds blending into one another as he felt his senses slowly die. All he could feel was pain.
He couldn’t register time. He didn’t know how long he laid atop Rosa, he didn’t know how long it was until he was rolled over onto his back.
He saw the familiar buns and star earrings of his beloved student hanging over him, screaming for him to hold on. To not let go.
He raised his hand to touch her cheek, the girl using her own to hold onto him. Not ever wanting to let go.
She was so warm.
Cheren could feel the watchful eyes of the person he treasured watching over him.
And in that second, as every single one of his cells froze over, he knew everything was right in the world.

Something something Ghetsis and Hilbert off fighting it out while Hilda and N are causing the big scene. Hilda and N and their factions are pieces on a chessboard sure, but Hilbert and Ghetsis are the chess masters. Hilbert doesn’t even want to play, but if it means taking down Ghetsis then Hilbert will play his game for now.
It’s like 5:30 for me but trust me when I say their 5D chess being the real focus and their backgrounds and their motives ties into the meaning about human interaction and why it’s important.
Hilbert changing the narrative Ghetsis built so high and breaking it into pieces. His actions changing the world. I’m trying to write something about this but I promise there’s something here I’m just having trouble articulating it
