Child-ish x Pacific Theatre x South Granville. (via Chelsey Stuyt)
[Playwright Sunny] Drake has created a remarkably hilarious stage experience thanks to its direct translation from the mouths of kids. Child-ish is deceptively simple. Lois Anderson's spare direction only further highlights the insightful material and fine performances. Its conceptual fidelity to the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of actual children is impressively admirable [...].
Actor Tom Pickett and kid advisors.
Running live on stage now until Mar. 9.

RICHMOND, Ind. — An Anderson woman faces a felony drug-dealing charge after she was found Wednesday with more than 170 grams of fentanyl.
Chelsey Lynn Smith, 27, was formally charged Thursday by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office with Level 2 felony dealing a narcotic drug, Level 6 felony possession of a syringe and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. The case is assigned to Superior Court 2.
She remained Thursday in the Wayne County Jail with $30,500 in bonds and a hold from another jurisdiction. Smith has an active arrest warrant from Madison County because she failed to appear for a Nov. 29 dispositional hearing on two Madison Circuit Court 5 cases.
County: Historic marker to commemorate Richmond woman's achievements
Case records show Smith has reached a plea agreement to resolve the cases that charge her with possession of a syringe and possession of methamphetamine, both as Level 6 felonies.
Smith was stopped Wednesday by Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Gabe Ward on westbound Interstate 70 near the 149 mile marker, according to Sheriff Randy Retter in a news release. Ward observed signs of drug use in the car and was informed by the Wayne County Emergency Communication Center about Smith's warrant.
Sgt. Larry Kuhn of the Cambridge City Police Department also arrived with Jessie, his K-9 partner. Jessie indicated the presence of a narcotics odor in the vehicle, the release said.
Utilities: RP&L wants local voters to let it leave IURC jurisdiction
A probable cause search located the fentanyl marijuana, drug paraphernalia and syringes, some of which contained heroin, the release said.
“While it is unclear if these narcotics were headed to a destination in Wayne County, the driver was utilizing a major highway that runs right through the center of it," Retter said in the release. "I am grateful for the diligent work of Deputy Ward and the partnerships we have with our local law enforcement agencies.”
A Level 2 felony conviction carries a standard 17½-year sentence with a sentencing range of 10 to 30 years. A Level 6 felony conviction's standard sentence is one year with a range of six months to 2½ years.
City: Common Council moves Midwest Industrial Park expansion forward
According to online records, Smith has previous convictions for possession of a syringe in LaPorte County and maintaining a common nuisance in Cass County.

My Top Books (2020)
Again late, but we gotta have some consistency here.
I read a ton this year, since, you know, homebound. Not that I wasn’t working from home before this year, but I haven’t spent much time out of it since March. Also they cancelled hockey. Sure they had a bubble, and I had hockey coming out of my ears for a bit, but I had net less hockey, which made time for net more reading.
Some binge Netflix series, some learn to make banana bread, others tear through books at a frankly concerning pace. I can’t bake and I can somehow only maintain an attention span for the written word right now. But it gave me the time to tackle a lot of classics I’ve been meaning to read for ages, and hey! Lotta them are pretty great.
Top ten novels of the year, in no order (and four were actually published this year, which is neat!)
1. Cutting for Stone - Abraham Verghese 2. Washington Black - Esi Edugyan 3. Migrations - Charlotte McConaghy 4. A Deadly Education - Naomi Novik 5. A Room of One’s Own - Virgina Woolf 6. Suite Française - Irene Nemerinsky 7. The Hollow Places - T Kingfisher 8. Goodbye to Berlin - Christopher Isherwood 9. The Pull of the Stars - Emma Donaghue 10. Nothing to See Here - Kevin Wilson
Top five non-novel fiction, because they were being v rude to the novels by ranking so highly in my top overall despite being underrepresented in my reading percentage, again in no order (honestly this would usually just be short story collections because me and good short story collections are best buds — brevity is an art I am increasingly forgetting, I’m full on Polonius at this point, but I kept the admiration of it! — but Anne Carson’s a fucking genius.)
1. Fair Play - Tove Jansson 2. Antigonick - Anne Carson 3. Ficciones - Jorge Luis Borges 4. The Thing Around Your Neck - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 5. Night at the Fiestas - Kirstin Valdez Quade
Other stuff I liked, again in no order, and alllllllll over the place genre wise (I am a literary omnivore.):
Raybearer - Jordan Ifueko; The Daughter of Time - Josephine Tey; Topics of Conversation - Miranda Popkey; Real Life - Brandon Taylor; Code Name Verity - Elizabeth Wein; The Hidden Girl and Other Stories - Ken Liu; The Butterfly Garden - Dot Hutchinson; The Last Emperox - John Scalzi; Daughter of the Forest - Juliet Marillier; The Caine Mutiny - Herman Wouk (too…timely. TOO TIMELY); Shorefall - Robert Jackson Bennett; Appointment in Samarra - John O’Hara; Stray City - Chelsey Johnson; Three Comrades - Erich Maria Remarque; Long Way Down - Jason Reynolds; Harrow the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir; The Sirens of Titan - Kurt Vonnegut; The Iron Will of Genie Lo - F.C. Yee; The Vanishing Half - Brit Bennett; The Death of Vivek Oji - Akwaeke Emezi,  Darius the Great Deserves Better - Adib Khorram; City of the Lost - Kelley Armstrong; Grown - Tiffany Jackson; Boyfriend Material - Alexis Hall
I read a ton of fantastic, important non-fiction this year, so I’m going to separate that from fiction:
Top ten of the year, in no order (no I’m lying. Just Mercy was one of the first books I read in 2020 and immediately cemented the #1 spot. But in no order after that)
1. Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption - Bryan Stevenson 2. What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions - Randall Munroe 3. The New Jim Crow - Michelle Robinson 4. Steal Like an Artist - Austin Kleon 5. Solutions and Other Problems - Allie Brosh 6. White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide - Carol Anderson 7. The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism - Naomi Klein (Read this as COVID became very real. Can’t say that was fun, but it was instructive) 8. The Hilarious World of Depression - John Moe 9. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents - Isabel Wilkerson 10. How to Be an Antiracist - Ibram X Kendi
Other good stuff: On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From the Twentieth Century; Why We Can't Wait; In the Dream House; Another Day in the Death of America; Breath: a New Science of a Lost Art; The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power; Eat the Buddha: Life and Death in a Tibetan Town

hello 😌 I saw someone asked for quotes here and i really liked them, so could you please share some that reminds you of grief and sorrow??
sure!
She never utters a sound even when she’s crying, and that makes me a little sad. Doesn’t seem right. When you cry, people should hear you. The world should stop.
— Libba Bray, Going Bovine
Each person’s grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed. That doesn’t mean needing someone to try to lessen it or reframe it for them. The need is for someone to be fully present to the magnitude of their loss without trying to point out the silver lining.
— David Kessler, “Our Experience of Grief is Unique as a Fingerprint”
I'm right behind you. / You say forget but I'll remind you. / You can try to hide but you know that I will find you. / ‘Cause if you won't grieve me, you won't leave me behind.
— “I’m Alive”, Next to Normal
Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” / But I say unto you, they are inseparable. / Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.
— Kahlil Gibran, “On Joy and Sorrow”
Oh, to be ravaged by loneliness. By its soft, malleable teeth. A slow death. A slow ravaging. More like being pulled apart than eaten. You used to beg God for this at night, used to beg him to go make you small enough to get picked up in something’s mouth and then swallowed. You used to bend your shadow into something worth slicing through, into something that deserved to be pried open. What you didn’t know was that nothing that wanted you had claws.
— Caitlyn Siehl, “Nothing That Wanted You”
Ivan Ilych's life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible.
— Leo Tolstoy, The Death of Ivan Ilych
It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.
— Lemony Snicket, Horseradish
Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.
— Jamie Anderson
You remember too much, / my mother said to me recently. / Why hold onto all that? And I said, / Where can I put it down?
— Anne Carson, “The Glass Essay”
FLEABAG: I don't know what to do with it.
BOO: With what?
FLEABAG: With all the love I have for her. I don't know where to put it now.
BOO: I'll take it.
[FLEABAG laughs]
BOO: No, I'm serious. It sounds lovely. I'll have it.
— Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag 02x04
The word grief means nothing. / Did I ever feel grief? / What did I know? / Death is death. / Now, let’s go into the tiger cage and talk.
— Chelsey Minnis, “Grief”
There are ways of dying that don't end in funerals. Types of death you can't smell.
— Haruki Murakami, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman
There is no country for those who despair. But I know that the sea comes before and after me, and I hold my madness ready. Those who love and are separated can live in grief. This is not despair; they know that love exists. This is why I suffer, dry-eyed and exiled.
— Albert Camus
And me? / I’m not doing anything. / I’m not helping or cleaning. / I’m not even crying. / I’m not doing anything. / She’d be so goddamn helpful. / Well, fuck her for dying ’cause I - /
I’m not writing her elegy. Not me. / I’m not writing that down. / They would scrawl her name on a city wall / but I’m a fucking clown. / I’m making jokes so I don’t drown.
— “Anyway”, The Bad Years
I demand a war to bring the dead boy back / no matter what his name is this time. / I at least demand a song. a song will do just fine. \\
look at what the lord has made. / above Missouri, sweet smoke.
— Danez Smith, “not an elegy for Mike Brown”
My lament, / a badge, follows me / everywhere I go. Sometimes the / blaze / is fury. Sometimes it is a soft sorrow. I look to the sky and I see it all / burning.”
— Casandra López, “Eclipse”

THE ARBORS - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Gravitas Ventures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In a dreary small rural American town lives Ethan Daunes, a reclusive locksmith struggling to keep ties with his younger brother, Shane. Ethan's life takes an unsettling turn after finding a strange small creature inside an animal carcass lying in the middle of the road one night. He takes back to his house where he forms a mysterious connection with it before it escapes back into the wild. After a string of unexplained killings, the creature's true nature is soon revealed, and Ethan finds himself at the center of panic and paranoia.
REVIEW: Great classic horror, gothic horror, at its core deals with the question of the characters subconscious connection to these dark things that manifest themselves, or are given life to. Even consider the Shakespearean play “The Tempest” and its relationship to the 1956 classic sci-fi film “The Forbidden Planet,” where there are these physical and natural forces that represent the Id. Clayton Witmer’s film THE ARBORS asks similar questions set against the backdrop of a rural American town, where a loner’s chance encounter with a mysterious creature. He begins to perceive an opportunity to return his life to simpler, happier times. However, much like Willard, both films that are based on “Ratman's Notebooks'' by Stephen Gilbert, or Victor Frankenstein, no good comes from their meddling with these forces that are beyond their full control. The film is a compelling tale that examines these issues in relation to a failed American dream.
THE ARBORS is rich with mood and atmosphere as Witmer introduces the view to his main character, Ethan, and his relationship to this mysterious spider-like creature. The filmmaker does an excellent job of keeping the viewer off balance as he slowly reveals things that we might perceive to be otherwise. Ethan’s character development is this gut-wrenching, slow burn that is harrowing to watch. Given the setting and Ethan’s situation the viewer might believe that some of his choices would be otherwise, but then it wouldn’t be a very good horror film.
As people go missing the townsfolk,  the men, gather to discuss the situation. The filmmaker creates this contrast as shows them to be as equally lost as Ethan. They lack the ability to take action, that is until Ethan leads them down a specific path for his selfish reasons. It's interesting the heightened sense of helplessness that he presents and how modern day middle American seem when considered against the torch and pitchfork wielding crowd that goes after the perceived monster in classic stories. Unlike other cinematic and literary anti-heroes, Ethan never appears to be fully committed to a fully conceived plan of action but we know no good will come of his choices, all for selfish reasons.
I enjoyed the production designs, costumes, location, and the excellent performances. The special and visual effects of the creature design are brilliant. There is always the debate about what you should or should not show when it comes to a monster, as nothing is scarier then what our imaginations can come up with. Witmer shows us brief glimpses of the creature and never a full view. It’s always lurking in the shadows or its lair, and it has stealth, only revealing its presence when it is too late for its victim. What’s compelling is that Witmer gives this creature a presence where we feel that it might be more intelligent than Ethan thinks. It’s cool, creepy, and an excellent execution of design.
THE ARBORS is not simply a great horror movie, but a great movie. The story is a simple plot that is woven together with complex issues of the subconscious and human nature. Witmer is a skillful director who orchestrates all the elements at his disposal to give the view something to react to and also more to think about afterwards. Witmer puts a fresh spin on a classic theme and delivers a contemporary masterpiece, a haunting tale for the ages.

Student leaders among those who decry cuts to summer employment program in N.B.
A program that sprouts summer jobs for students in New Brunswick has been pruned this season, meaning fewer hours and jobs.
The 600 cuts to the Student Employment Experience Development (SEED) program come as a shock to students, who count on the work to pay for their education.
“I was stunned and I was disappointed and I felt like it was just another attack against young individuals in New Brunswick,” said Chelsey Smith, a family support worker in Moncton.
Students from college, university, and Grade 12 heading into post-secondary are eligible for a SEED voucher - one similar to a paid internship.
“We do usually have 2,000 vouchers available, and those are usually used up,” said Emelyana Titarenko, the New Brunswick Student Alliance Chair.
If selected from a random draw, students are set up with a summer job with a New Brunswick employer.
What used to be a 14-week work period for university students is now 12. It's also been shortened to eight weeks instead of nine for high school and college students.
“The SEED program, not only does it benefit from an exponential learning perspective, but also financial perspective,” said Titarenko.
SEED student Jasmin Anderson has been selected to work in a lab at Mount Allison University.
“It gives me more experience when I would like to apply for my Masters program or any of that,” said Anderson.
And, since Anderson will be continuing her education post-grad, she won't be working fulltime. She says the SEED opportunity will be a big help financially.
Smith, who has taken on SEED students in the past, says the cuts will hurt.
“I can't encourage any student to want to come here because what kind of support do they get?” Smith said. “Everything that gets promised to them is taken away within a year.”
The New Brunswick Student Alliance says making cuts to the SEED program is not only an issue for students, but rather a ripple effect that's going to affect the entire province.
“We do think that this government doesn’t seem to have a vision or a plan for the post-secondary New Brunswick sector, which is really concerning to us,” said Titarenko.
CTV reached out to the New Brunswick government for comment on why the cuts were made, but did not receive a reply before newstime.
With files from CTV Atlantic’s Kate Walker.

Rites of Spring Proves That The Rush Of Good Storytelling is Worth The Ride

Review 209
It’s always interesting and challenging writing reviews of short play festivals. You have to honor the work of a whole bunch of people in an itty bitty amount of time. When you throw in the fact that these plays were written, rehearsed, and performed in a short amount of time you also have to honor the amount of experimentation and expression involved. These plays didn’t exist just a little while ago and now they do. It’s that joy of creation that makes writing these reviews so rewarding.
Tumblr media
Each of the Eight Teams had a prompt or a line to use in the story and a prop. Then they had to write a play about something Spring themed. Let’s see how they did!

Spring Cleaning for Mrs. J
Written by: Orlando F. Rodriguez
Directed by Mia Y Anderson
Cast- Luana Seu, Judd Silverman, Josephine Pizzino
She has to do spring cleaning and finds a cursed object and has to solve riddles to escape a magical bird. The husband doesn’t listen to us however and chaos ensues. The characters were super relatable to us since we are a married couple ourselves. Dana couldn’t keep from yelling at the screen saying this guy had better listen up. If that had been Dana and me in this situation I would have been dead before the last wish. We both appreciated the nice twist at the ending. Playwriting is all about managing tension and staying ahead of expectations. The fact that Rodriguez was able to do that in a short time was amazing. Kudos to some brilliant directing by Anderson and the talented cast.

Eggs In One Basket
Written By: Donna Latham
Directed by: Chelsey Smith
Cast-Ralane Cantisano, Raul Chavez, Samuel Neagley, Maggie Kissinger
A girl is taking a boyfriend back to her magical childhood stomping grounds. Her fairy besties are not amused. The acting of our two performers playing the fairies was really effective. Dana and I Iove fairies and pop culture and these were a great balance between mystical beings and your catty best friends. We like the idea of modern fairies telling you to dump your man. I now have to add “Starbucks date with these fairies” to my bucket list and that is the best review I could give to Latham’s playwriting.
Tumblr media
Chasing Juliet
Written by Katie Frazier
Directed by Brock Hill
Cast: Lluvia Almanza, Anel Carmona, Orlando F. Rodriguez, Maya Schnaider, Zara Kaahn
This story about a young woman trying to keep up with her favorite blogger shows us why keeping up with the Joneses doesn’t always pay off. We both laughed at the “identities as a haunted house” line! We loved that this play was funny AF and got to the point quickly. Kudos to the cast on this one for pulling off a great performance.
Tumblr media
Riots of Spring: The Audition
Written By Becky Saunders
Directed by Antonio Mniño
Cast Ellie Mae Niller, Sean Phillips, Samantha Simone
This play about a mistaken identity at an audition was performed excellently but it did seem to have a pacing problem. That’s a shame because I personally favor plays that attempt something ambitious like an episodic structure in a short form. It was weird and wacky and I have no clue why they did it but I’m glad they tried it. When pulled off correctly these things can really shine. I’d love to see if Saunders does a second version after this. A revision not done under the ticking clock might kick this good play up a notch to phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Miracle Birds
Written by Ben Dworken
Directed by Paul Andrews
The Cast: Jonathan Wong Frye, Jennifer Atkinson, Isabelle Barany, Mary Sheridan
I have literally had fever dreams about a day when I’ll be walking out in a mask and people will be staring at me like I’m a freak because everyone except me for this universal message that COVID was over except me. So I really feel for this dude. Now these three ladies and their miracle birds were absolutely nothing from my dreams. Very good acting on the part of Atkinson, Barany, and Sheridan and kudos to Wong Frye for going along with that “is this even real” face. Good job to Ben Dworken for making me Google and see if Miracle Birds even exist. I hope I never see these ladies and their bird nest in a dark or well lit alley.

The Year Of The Fall Of May
Written by Susan Goodell
Directed by Paige Washington
Cast-Jo Walker, Natalie Osborne, Rick Benson
Three individuals wonder if they angered the goddess by not performing the May festival. We didn’t know what the stakes were or what would happen if the parade didn’t get done this year.
There was no urgency as if the play lacked heat. You know how you test a skillet’s temperature by hovering your hand over it? We seemed able to stay a long time in this moment. We had brilliant characters and a talented cast. The Good news is I think Goodell has such a great foundation for this play that with a couple of tweaks it will get much better. If I were your dramaturge I would just add a line about the city being destroyed by giant chickens if the parade doesn’t happen (or something to that effect). Whatever you choose would be fine.
Tumblr media
The Rite-ing on the wall.
Written By Anel Carmona
Directed by Crystal Ramirez
Cast- Johnny Blaze Leavitt, Mateo Moreno
Ever thought what would happen if magic spells had tech support? Well no you do! This one was oddly weird. I know that’s not a thing but after seeing this yes it is. It’s exactly what I meant about keeping the tension ramped up. Even though it was splotches on a wall, Carmona's writing kept me feeling itchy. Great job from the cast for selling it so well. I feel like our director Ramirez and Carmona had to have a great rapport to get this idea working.
Tumblr media
Blue Man Manakins
Written by Molly Kirschner
Directed by Lanise Antoine Shelley
Cast-Ita Korenzecher, Jennifer Iris Rivera, Chris Jumper, Stephanie D. Barney.
This show about birds trying to find a mate seemed to gender swap. We apologize for any assumption about gender but it seemed as though toxic masculinity was coming from a femme perspective and we loved that. That’s one of the great things that we artists get to do sometimes. When we treat the stage like a snow globe and shake things up we can have fun seeing what comes falling down. The cast did an amazing job working with the playwright and director on this idea. Overall a great performance.
This production shows you exactly why short form festivals like these are so vital. This is what is possible when talented people are constrained in space in time. This is the kind of artistry and expression that comes when artists get rid of their internal block and allow themselves to create freely. We as the audience get to come in with the same nervous excitement we would have if we were riding a rollercoaster. Will we make it or will we crash and burn?

22 MODERN WEDDING IDEAS FOR SUPER CHIC
For couples who have a knack for everything current, a modern wedding theme is a great way to show your love for contemporary design. You love everything fresh and trendy, and your wedding should reflect that! So how do you host a modern wedding? We turned to the experts for modern wedding ideas for everything from inviting rooms to chairs and table landscapes.
The clean lines, Lucite decoration, and fresh green overflow are just a few tricks that can turn any event into a modern retreat. Design your stationery with bold text and a monochrome color scheme, plan for a less elegant and elegant ceremonial backdrop, and keep a cocktail menu featuring the latest custom creations. From there, think of keywords that will be critical to your planning experience.
For more modern wedding ideas, we have collected our top tips from wedding planning experts on how to make your nuptials chic and contemporary.
Use of ghost chairs
“By using unexpected variables such as vellum, concrete or acrylic (to mimic Lucite) it is possible to give an event a modern feel. “Acrylic chairs allow to illuminate all the elements around them because they are literally transparent!” A floating ceremonial look built on top of a garden fountain helped give this arrangement a modern edge by adding acrylic ghost chairs.
Go to an incompatible bridal party
A trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon is a bridal party outfit in various (and chic!) Mermaid dresses. It is a feature that will add a whimsical element to your wedding day and the photos. “Whether you allow your bride to choose their own dresses, or inspire them in a particular color / style / design that inspires you to wear them, the end result will be something elegant and playful,” says Caitlin Campbell, senior event coordinator and designer at True Event.
Wear a minimalist wedding dress
Your wedding dress can be a nod to your minimalist wedding style. “For this chic wedding, the bride wore a minimalist dress with Rime Arakaki. Clean lines and a minimalist design created the perfect focal point for the bride’s wedding portraits. Looking for a minimalist wedding dress? Check out 67 of our favorites here!
Set the tone with stationery
What better way to send a modern wedding design message than with your invitations? “As the first expression of your wedding style, invitations are a key element of your wedding theme,” said Thomas Bui, founder of Thomas Bui Lifestyle. For a modern occasion, bold text lying against minimal design will project a fresh simple design for your stationery.
Use a simple background
Slippery lines, minimal background, and a sophisticated color palette can make or break a modern ceremonial setting. Keep the focus on your couple, your venue, and your design minimal by reducing your decor usage.
Use greenery instead of flowers
Literary reception, fresh reception suggests Jill Remy, owner and designer at Jill & Co. Events, that your centers would be created by a greenhouse overflow. “One of the best ways to turn your reception into an example of contemporary style is to use arrangements filled with vines, leaves, and other green, green foliage,” says Remy. If you want to include flowers in your table landscape design, change each height setting to create multiple center levels.
Eliminate decoration completely
Why not eliminate the need for decoration for finishing your modern ceremonial arrangement? “One modern approach to your ceremony is to keep the focal point on your couple alone. “Final shots will result in striking backgrounds without the use of decoration.”
Follow a monochrome color palette
“One of the easiest ways to emphasize a modern wedding is to use a combination of materials in a monochrome color palette, founder of Bluebird Productions. Apply this palette to everything from your flatware to the flowers.
Focus on interesting flavors
“Enhance the food and drink experience by putting together an up-and-coming dinner excitement for a discerning modern food crowd,” says Chelsey Jean Morrison, owner and lead designer / planner at Collect Together Events. “Plan for a perfectly passed bite and pass at cocktail hour, curated wine pairing, or seasonal / local foods,” Enhance the appearance of your presentation by creating a wreath-free tray organized by high quality treats and hors d’oeuvres.
Go for everything white
“It’s a modern wedding technique that is always in style, adhering to an all-white design, be it in flowers, table landscape decoration, or reception and ceremonial backgrounds,” says Kathleen Deer, owner of Kathleen Deer Design. “Using an all-white palette allows you to focus on other details throughout your day (especially your appearance) including linens, glassware, cores and other decorative uses.” of color, the fresh vegetable is a great choice that works with any season.
Think about your location
One of the best ways to express your wedding style is through your choice in the venue. sales manager at Abigail Kirsch off Premises, recommends choosing a space that is undoubtedly contemporary. “When you go with a space that already has a modern feel to it, you don’t have to adapt your space with any unnecessary décor. For this wedding, the modern aesthetic of the wedding was due to the clean lines, the higher ceiling and the refined feel of the space.
Try a modern cake design
Make sure you carry a modern element for every detail of your day – even in the cake! “The patterns and textures created on this simple two-tier cake have created a chic and stylish element to the reception, “Perfectly elegant fun balance, your cake design can create a contemporary focal point for your dessert table.”
Give your planner a set of words to live with
One of the best ways to stay themed with your modern style is to find a collection of design-oriented keywords. “My favorite modern wedding buzzwords are clean, geometric and simplicity,” says the beauty of adhering to these descriptive words that will never fail a modern reception space forever. . ” In addition, your wedding planner will know exactly what to expect with the final product.
Add personalization
Today, personalization for a big day goes far beyond the day itself. “Celebrate your wedding with a live painter who will bring all the special sights and moments from your celebration,” says Anna Griffith, senior events sales manager at Cannon Green. “Not only is an artist a perfect cocktail hour entertainment, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind container to take home!” Contemporary design really focuses on the small details!
Pay attention to flatware
Alicia Fritz, founder of A Day in May Event Planning & Design, is asking a couple to think about their landscaping details while finalizing a modern wedding style. “Trading traditional flatware and glassware is an unexpectedly simple way to add a contemporary twist to your wedding reception,” she says. “For example, the use of black metal cutlery and non-stop glasses will draw guests’ attention to these small details that have so far been removed from normal place offers.”
Go trendy with cocktails
Pair your raised hors d’oeuvres with a cocktail menu worthy of the latest trends. “Whether it’s the latest in cocktail infusions, heavy flavors, or custom creations, there’s a stand-alone cocktail menu in a unique and distinctive modern setting for any event,” beverage director at Paula Leduc Fine Catering & Events. “Play around with glassware and garnishes for an added touch of modern talent.”
Don’t be afraid of negative space
“Create visual interest with clean lines, striking colors and negative space,” says Lauren Emerson, owner of Lauren Emerson Events & Design, who designed this contemporary landscape with minimal decoration and a simple yet sophisticated setting.
Keep the tables minimal
“Vegetable-inspired centers, various white flowers, and a slate-inspired color scheme are just some of the elements that make this landscape fresh and contemporary,” founder of Alicia K Designs. We also love how this couple added a splash of neutral color to the camel chairs.
But still pay attention to special details
“You can tailor all the little details to suit your modern wedding theme,” says, owner of Serene & Company. “For example, we’ve given these cardboards a contemporary twist by incorporating geometric designs with bold colors.” Color pop is a great way to add a modern touch to your place cards, invitations, or other stationery elements on your big day. .
Use black as an accent
Black is the perfect color for a modern wedding. “It reads elegant, chic, fashionable and sophisticated all at the same time,” says Laura Ritchie, chief event designer at Grit & Grace. “We often use it to create depth and character for our designs.” Whether it’s coloring a menu card outline or using it to decorate a complete Lucite math, black is a color that will always create drama.
Go boldly by candle light
“Clean lines and candlelight are the best definition of modern romance,” says Cassy Anderson, founder of Cassy Rose Events, which supports the use of candlelight for any modern affair. Glass voters of varying heights will give strength and dimension to the appearance of a candle.
Create a custom dance floor
For this Art Deco inspired wedding, the couple arranged a geometric design for their custom dance floor. “Our bride wanted to create a day that would resemble the elements of art deco,” says Melissa Cooper Wald, senior director of events at Major Food Group in the Seagram Building. A palette of black-and-white colors with gold and metallic touches provided the perfect atmosphere for this modern fête.
