In 2008, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Back To You, co-created/executive produced by Steve Levitan, was canceled by Fox, the broadcast network then-aligned with Levitan’s longtime studio home, 20th Television. Shortly thereafter, another comedy co-created/executive produced by Levitan, Modern Family, was sold to a rival network, ABC, where it went to series and became an instant hit.
In 2023, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Reboot, created by Levitan, was canceled by Hulu, the streamer aligned with his studio 20th TV. Shortly thereafter, another comedy, Erin Foster’s Nobody Wants This, which Levitan executive produces, sold to a rival streamer, Netflix, where it went to series and became an instant hit.
In both cases, Levitan had been vocal in his displeasure over the cancellations, directing it at the network/platform: More bluntly about Back To You, “I have sworn off the Fox network. I’m done,” and more subtle about Reboot, “Haven’t seen it? Check us out on Hulu if you can find it.”
The parallels are not lost on industry observers as Nobody Wants This, in which Levitan doesn’t have a hands-on creative involvement, shot to No. 1 on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for English series last week in a strong start that has earned the comedy a quick Season 2 renewal.
Meanwhile, another 20th Television series, CBS‘ Tracker, came back strong Sunday with 8.3 million Live+Same Day linear viewers for its Season 2 premiere, ranking as the No. 1 entertainment program of the week across broadcast and cable in total viewers.
Given Netflix’s reach, this means that 20th TV likely had the most watched streaming and linear original series in the U.S. over two consecutive weeks — and neither of them is on a Disney network or platform.
That would be almost unthinkable just a couple of years ago when Disney was largely walled off from the rest of the marketplace. It harkens to the time when 20th TV’s predecessor, 20th Century Fox Television, had a top series on every network: The Practice on ABC, This Is Us on NBC, How I Met Your Mother on CBS and a slew of hits on sibling Fox including 24, Glee, Empire and The Simpsons.
In its current incarnation, 20th Television also produces hits for its own platforms, including 9-1-1 and freshman Doctor Odyssey for ABC, Only Murders In the Building for Hulu and Percy Jackson for Disney+. (It is in the process of absorbing sibling ABC Signature, home of ABC standouts Grey’s Anatomy and newbie High Potential.)
But, under Karey Burke, 20th TV has branched out, allowing top talent to take projects out if they don’t sell within Disney, much like Universal Television let Dick Wolf take FBI to CBS having already filled two nights on NBC with the Chicago and Law & Order series.
That is what happened with both Nobody Wants This, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, and Tracker, headlined by Justin Hartley. While Modern Family was not taken to Fox in 2008, Nobody Wants This, created and executive produced by Foster, was pitched to Hulu and got a pass, I hear. It went to Netflix which has carved out a rom-com niche with series like Emily In Paris. The streamer evolved the project, originally titled Shiksa, into the show that has been #1 or #2 for three straight weeks after some behind-the-scenes changes under Foster.
That also was the case with Tracker, which was shopped to ABC before being taken in by CBS, ordered to pilot, then series and given a post-Super Bowl launch pad.
The expansion is part of the loosening up of self-imposed restrictions since Bob Iger returned as Disney CEO and signaled right away that the company would be licensing more film and TV content to rivals.
While it’s still hard for canceled series to leave the ecosystem (I hear there was interest from Netflix in FX’s Dave), Disney recently licensed to Netflix for a limited time marquee library titles such as Prison Break, which has been a mainstay on the streamer’s Top 10 for the past month and a half, Lost and This Is Us, in exchange for getting to share Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu.
That was accompanied by Netflix’s pickup of Nobody Wants This, the first 20th TV original series on the streamer since the studio was acquired by Disney.
In a TV world left divided by the streaming wars into media companies focused on building their SVOD platforms like Disney, WBD and Paramount, and arms dealers like Sony, 20th TV is among those trying to be both.

9-1-1 Is Now on ABC
9-1-1 Is Now on ABC
From our Friends at D23 If you need 9-1-1, you can reach it by dialing into a new network. After airing for six seasons on FOX, the hit drama is now on ABC. “This crew has completely stepped up to the historic challenge of moving the No. 1 show in television from one network to another,” said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television. While the network is new, the thrills and excitement…

News that ABC plans to further commingle the Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 universes has drawn a strong rebuke from fans (TVLine included), but the network’s top exec is now clarifying the merger plan.
Last May, shortly after announcing that current Grey’sshowrunner Krista Vernoff would also be taking the helm of Station 19, ABC’s entertainment president Karey Burke revealed that when the spinoff returns to its post-Grey’s at midseason there would be a weekly“crossover event” between the two shows.
Burke now concedes that she misspoke. “I did not intend to say that every week there would be a crossover [event],” the exec tells TVLine. Instead, Burke says there will be “several [Grey’s/Station 19] crossover events” throughout the coming season, adding, “To do a crossover everyweek would dilute the special nature of them. I think it’s going to be three or four peppered throughout the season.”
That said, Burke says that under Vernoff the two shows will — generally speaking — feel “more blended.” To that end, she reveals that a new inter-show romance will blossom this season between a Grey’s character and a Station 19 character, although she did not reveal the identity of said characters. The decision to more closely merge the two series makes sense seeing as how every time ABC staged a Grey’s/Station 19 crossover the ratings for both programs ticked up. But some fans worried that weekly doses of Station 19 on Grey’s would dilute the mothership. “Don’t bring Grey’s down!” bemoaned TVLine reader Grace. “I’m not a fan of Station 19. I’ve tried but just can’t get into it. I don’t think trying to force Grey’sfans to watch Station 19 is the way to go at all.”Burke stresses that Grey’s fans need not worry, explaining that “Station 19 will likely feel more like Grey’s” but not the other way around. “The goal is not to have Grey’sfeel more like Station. The goal is to extend the DNA of Grey’s to Station in a more significant way.“It’s so smartly constructed,” Burke declares. “Both shows will absolutely stand alone. But fans of both shows will get that extra gravy of knowing they are watching crossovers.”

ABC President Karey Burke said today that LOST “is a reboot I’d be interested in seeing.”
“It is literally at this point just what I dream about when I go to bed at night. I have not spoken to Carlton [Cuse] or J.J. [Abrams] or ABC Studios about it. I do often get the question what show would I reboot and often my answer is Lost, sometimes Alias. Nothing to report yet, maybe ever but it would be a fun thing to have a conversation about.” (x)
Damon and Carlton have both said they’re not interested in revisiting the characters, but are open to someone else’s idea.
Carlton, back in August, had this to say: “I think that they [at Disney/ABC] all understand and respect the decision that Damon and I made that we don’t have any desire to reboot the show or do a sequel or anything like that. As we have both said before, I expect that at some point the Walt Disney Company or someone will come along with an idea to do some other characters on the island, in the world of LOST, and we’re fine with that. We told our story.”

Can we trust this time? There are plenty of Bob Chapek interviews promising the same, and while most of his polemics are about things he inherited from previous administrations, his handling of those issues turned out to be pretty bad. But Karey Burke is diferent from Chapek because, as she said, the issue directly affects her.
It this all just for money and applause, as DeSantis claimed? Probably, but we live in a capitalist world, so if actions are not taken based on the ideal but for money, and in the end they have the same result for me it doesn't matter.

THE ACADEMY AND ABC SET APRIL 25, 2021 AS NEW SHOW DATE FOR 93RD OSCARS®
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the ABC Television Network today announced the 93rd Oscars® ceremony will move to Sunday, April 25, 2021, as a result of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19. The show, which will air live on ABC, was originally scheduled for February 28, 2021. Coinciding with the Oscars celebration, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, initially scheduled to open to the public on December 14, 2020, will now open on April 30, 2021, also as a result of the health crisis.
“For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “This coming Oscars and the opening of our new museum will mark an historic moment, gathering movie fans around the world to unite through cinema."
“We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners at the Academy to ensure next year’s show is a safe and celebratory event that also captures the excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,” said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano and featuring six floors of exhibition spaces, education and special event spaces, a conservation studio, a restaurant, a museum store, the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater and the 288-seat Ted Mann Theater, will move its opening to April 30, 2021.
Bill Kramer, director of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, said, “I speak for all of us at the Museum when I say that we have been eagerly awaiting the moment when we can share the Academy Museum with movie lovers everywhere. With the unprecedented and devastating pandemic happening around the world and our commitment first and foremost to the health and safety of our visitors and staff, we have made the difficult decision to wait a few more months to open our doors. Thankfully, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place, exhibitions continue to be installed. We look forward to April 2021 when Los Angeles and the world will be able to join together as the Academy celebrates the Oscars and the opening of its long-dreamed-of Museum.”

Dates also have shifted for the Academy Awards® eligibility period, submission deadlines and related awards season events. The eligibility period for Academy Awards consideration has been extended beyond the standard December 31 deadline: a feature film must now have a qualifying release date between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021. The submission deadline for specialty categories (Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, International Feature Film, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film) is December 1, 2020. The submission deadline for general entry categories, including Best Picture, Original Score and Original Song, is now January 15, 2021. Visit oscars.org/rules for the complete 93rd Academy Awards rules, revised with these dates and deadlines.
During this time, it has become necessary to make exceptional changes to the Academy’s standard annual awards schedule. The intent going forward is to ultimately return to awarding excellence for films released in the January-December calendar year. Future eligibility windows and the Oscar® show date for 2022 will be announced at a later date.
Academy key dates for the 2020/2021 Oscar season are as follows:
The Academy’s Governors Awards, an annual celebration held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, will not take place this fall. Additional information about the ceremony and selection of honorees will be provided at a later date.
The 93rd Oscars will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
