Latest video on youtube, I got bored and challenged myself to make a watercolour painting using only dollar store art supplies.
Conclusion, dollar store watercolor is gooey and weird!

wanted to work on all my personal stuff today but the super chef of the company i work for is sick and one of my coworkers wants me to draw a picture to gift to him and its gotta be done until tuesday ... i haven worked with watercolors in a decade and it SHOWS, spent 5 hours trying to get even just a test done and it looks like babies first watercolor adventure
#ganondoodles talks#i want to yell and cry why did i say yes#they want it to be 'really' drawn so no digital#and i kinda think just one with colored pencil isnt gonna do#but thats my really desperate plan b#all the watercolor supplies are cheap or so old it has crystallized#and the only artist shop around closed two years ago so i cant even go and buy more better stuff#q-q

I know exactly who needs to hear this: the reason models and actresses have smooth lipstick borders and the haggard fujoshi in our mirrors dont is because you have to get rid of all the peach fuzz around your mouth to be able to get a solid line with a brush or a liner pencil. otherwise it's like trying to get a crayon to make a solid line on top of a kiwi fruit. no one tells you this. they just expect you to either figure it out by yourself or look bad.
item 2: almost no one can easily or reliably get even, smooth, non-lopsided lipstick application by putting the actual stick of lipstick directly onto your mouth and dragging it around. I mean you sort of can, if you're just dabbing or swiping a light application or a color close to your lip color, but that thing in movies where the lady puts on a full mouth of dark red lipstick in a mirror in one layer in one movement like she's outlining a ghost on a paranormal video screenshot is a male fantasy. you have to use a lip brush or pencil (i really recommend lip brush, pencil still has the crayon texture to it on skin usually) to get a really precise border or edge and to make avoiding fuckups easier and also removing fuckups easier.
you can shave around your mouth with a regular leg razor and it's fine, I do it dry all the time and it's not a big deal. you can also use one of those twinkle razors. or an electric shaver
#pro doom strats#makeup#lipstick#also you dont need a special brush for lipstick#cheap brushes for watercolor or acrylic paint lile the yellow bristle blue handle ones are fine#usually a flat brush wuth a squared off tip is best for lipstick but use whatever works for you

swatched my watercolors onto my sketchbook (that is not made for em at all 🫶) for Fun and Pretty Colors reasons
#first one is a cheap set called seamiart#the others are labeled#i always have to clarify i didnt buy full tubes of expensive DS paints i got these from someone on etsy who sells small#pans of them...i think its worth it! u get to try fancy watercolors and a little goes a long way#talkys#idk if i should get a watercolor sketchbook in a paper i saw is cold press but less rough than arches#(i dont like how rough arches is but i still want coldpress) bc i like all my art being in one place#but i also want a dedicated book for progress....idk! i guess ill#fiddle around like this for neow#idk why i always draw sea smunker for watercolor practice#i think its bc lighter colors arent as satisfying like u dont see the fun edge effect as much when they dry

Hard year for drawing ideas, so I redrew this old one of Gale and Claire from 2009:

Proportions have improved drastically in the intervening years
#kirehn draws#art#artists on tumblr#my art#redraw#digital art#original was copics and really cheap watercolors and some colored pencil#now it's just ipad I've forgotten how to use actual paper#proportions have improved but there are definitely still issues that got me squinting#but I'm at the point that more hours isn't going to make me like it any better#sort of tempted to do the UV thingie to it I really enjoy doing that#but I've never come up with how it would look for claire#we'll see#I'm very busy with cross stitch v_v#I do really like the redesign on their wings since then but I've always been kind of meh about the horns#but I can never come up with a better alternative I like :/#I need to get a bunch of art put up on the sideblog I think I'm waaaaaay behind on that#how do folks keep up with sideblogs#pk:ocs#pk:gale#pk:claire

Maybe it's because I'm not a professional, but it confuses me that artists will condemn certain brands of traditional art supplies and then turn around and go "art is a skill!! it doesn't matter what tools you use, it's practice that makes it look good!!" whenever people ask them about their go to art tools (whether traditional or digital)
#like babygirl i have made art with crayola colored pencils and master's touch pencils that i'm still proud of to this day#(in fact i got two nice sets of the latter for christmas. and some of their watercolor markers the year before that)#my family couldn't afford to buy me super fancy art supplies and art programs#i got my first sets of copics with birthday and christmas money i saved over the years. and my first sets of pricier pencils#i got the cheapest art tablet i could find when i first started digital art because i had to save and pay for that thing myself#and i waited for a sale#when i switched to my ipad and procreate the only reason i got an ipad at all was because it was an older gen and was on sale#and my mom bought it for me for my fifteenth birthday#i made do with cheap colored pencils and medibang before that and my art was just fine#in total i've probably only spent $15 max on procreate brushes because i found free ones that i liked#i pretty much exclusively use free brushes#i STILL use crayola pencils and cheaper art supplies when i do traditional art#maybe i'm reading into it but the contradictory behavior to me feels condescending#it's the only explanation i can think of#'it's the artist not the tools! doesn't matter what you use it'll take FOREVER before you're on my level'#but that's a very bad faith interpretation of it and not the way i want to look at it#but still. make it make sense#probably delete later

A couple more watercolor esk, testing out some new paper! It turns out that uh, using high quality watercolor paper has some benefits huh.
#watercolor#twwm#quirk#drawing stuff#i did find that the 300lb cotton paper was way more ink-smudgy than the cheap paper i had been using#which took some adjusting#and the bottom one is on hotpress paper and the smoothness was almost a little disconcerting#but i have these sitting on my desk and the paper is SO flat. beautiful#these were just sample cards but maybe i'll have to try picking up some more#really entering my watercolor era....#also i saw a new gall and gave it to quirk :)

I've been trying to get back into painting this year, watercolors in particular. I feel extremely rusty on them, so most of my painting has been stuff like stain glass windows or other very geometric sectioning of the paper as I remember how to mix colors and smush them around, but I'm really pleased with how this lil guy came out, I love that he looks like a friend coming to say hello.
used a technique called 'accidental watercolor', which is where you first soak the paper and blob 3-4 colors on it, then decide what you want to paint over it. for example, this is my sketch over the first stage of painting;

I just really love doing this sort of painting. it always has a really cool color and texture effect for any nature paintings, especially if it includes water. plus it's really nice to have a step in the process that's just turning off my brain and letting the colors go wherever, it's very therapeutic.
#december posting#note for anyone who wants to try something like this: it works best if you're using ink or reallyyyyy good watercolors#unfortunately cheap watercolors tend to lift and muddy your top coats :(#i use ink watercolor pencils instead of my actual inks for my bottom layer because those are a lot cheaper but.. yeah!#creative endeavors
