#chat noir: showing up somewhere he can’t be as his normal self

Text
MLB really missed out on the humor factor of portraying ladybug and chat noir as celebrities. Marinette knows what’s happening like all the time and keeps knowing too much and everyone is baffled by it. Imagine Superman saving you and he knows a weirdly personal amount of information. Conspiracies that ladybug and chat noir are all knowing cryptids start to be spread.

A genuine question, but do you have any theories as to why when Marinette is crushing on Adrien she's awkward, stuttering, and almost always anxious (I mean as soon as she started crushing on Adrien that's what happened), while with Luka she's pretty much her regular self?
Because she isn’t actually in love with Adrien; she has a celebrity crush on him.
Love isn’t about stammering or getting weak in the knees at the sight of the person. Love is about being able to be oneself around someone and feeling comfortable around them. That’s why Marinette is “normal” around Luka but “weird” around Adrien.
Many of Adrien's other fangirls act similarly around him to Marinette, with the only difference being that they pursue Adrien directly whereas Marinette is too nervous to approach out of fear.
And to touch on that specifically; with Adrien, Marinette is afraid of being rejected because she’s not good enough. She’ll go on and on about how much of a “disaster” she is, which tends to be associated with her crush on Adrien or her screwing up around him. Her “crush” on Adrien is damaging to her self-esteem.
Marinette in “Gamer”: Um, no no no, I... No, you're so good. I mean, I'm the one who's not good. I mean... I'm lucky, that's all.
Her crush should be making her feel good about herself; it should make her feel loved and respected, which is how Luka makes her feel.
Luka in “Frozer”: Personally, I think a girl like you deserves to feel more like this. (plays a happy tune) And whoever made you feel this way is nothing but a--(plays a bad tune)
Marinette: (giggles) Thanks, Luka.
He made her feel so confident in herself that she almost immediately felt okay asking him to come with her to the ice rink. Heck, in that same episode, Marinette says this about her crush on Adrien:
Marinette: Whenever I talk to him as a friend, I hardly stammer at all. That's a sign right there. Right?
Notice how the show never tries to add a “but...” to that or explain it away; the girls’ argument doesn’t even try to refute it outside of Alya claiming Sunk Cost Fallacy as if that’s a legitimate reason to not give up (it’s not).
For more proof, look at how Marinette talks to/about Adrien:
Marinette in “Copycat” at Adrien’s answering machine: Hey, hot stuff--
-
Marinette in “Animan”: Oh, [Adrien]'s such a—
Alya: Smartie, hottie, suavísimo, yummy-tastic spellbinder?
Marinette: All of the above.
-
Mylène in “Reflekdoll”: Are you okay, Marinette?
Marinette: Yeah, he's too hot— I mean! I'm overheating in here, aren't you?
Look how so many of those are about appearance. It’s about Adrien being attractive. The moment Marinette falls for Adrien in “Origins” is in the atmospheric moment of the umbrella scene where he’s saying nothing and just staring into her eyes while the lighting makes him look all “pretty” (because I’m sorry, her falling for him based on what he says/does makes next to no sense). The reason she has so many pictures of him isn’t even about obsession: it’s about thinking he’s the hottest thing since the sun.
“Captain Hardrock” didn’t do that with Luka. Yes, Marinette initially stammered at Luka because oh no, he’s cute! but then had calmed down after Luka opened up to her and showed her a piece of himself.
Marinette in “Captain Hardrock”: What? Luka? No way! You're being ridiculous! Pff! Sure he's cool and nice and everything... but there's only one statue that drives this compass crazy!
Cool and nice. See that? It’s not, “he’s cute,” or anything shallow like that. Cool and nice are direct compliments that reflect Luka’s personality.
And what about the webisodes; the things that should be able to contain as much detail as possible so there’s no room for error or slip-ups?
Marinette in “Marinette and Adrien”: [Adrien]'s so amazing that I completely freak out every time I talk to him! I mean, seriously…he's super smart, he plays the piano, he's a great fencer, he speaks Chinese, and he's so cute too!
“Smart” is the closest thing to anything personality-based (but is also something forced onto him by Gabriel because he has to get good grades); anything else is just something he does or - again - how attractive he is.
Marinette: Adrien is a model for his father, Gabriel Agreste, the best fashion designer in Paris, and probably the world. But he never brags about it, because he's perfect!
One would think we’d be getting somewhere with “he’s humble,” but then Marinette slaps on “perfect;” you know, that line that “Lies” seemed to reject from Kagami as if it’s like how dare you think that the boy we constantly portray as perfect isn’t actually perfect?
Marinette then goes on to say that Adrien’s “major flaw” is that he gets along with Chloe, but where did that lead in the show? Adrien scolding her and making her feel bad about herself for being happy that her bully is gone, because Marinette can’t feel like she’s more right than him because he’s “perfect.” He just makes her feel inadequate.
And the “perfect” line isn’t restricted to webisodes:
Marinette in “Reflekdoll”: Huh? Uh, sure! You're perfect— I mean, it's perfect!
-
Aspik in “Desperada”: I hope I don't disappoint you, Ladybug.
Ladybug: I know you won't. You're perfect--uh, perfectly capable of defeating Desperada!
And she’s fawned before over how amazing Adrien’s life is, even without the webisodes. Literally the episode that last aired (”Lies”) had Marinette sighing over Adrien and talking nothing more about him than how amazing his life is; nothing about his personality.
It’s not about Adrien; it’s about her being starstruck by his attractiveness and how much of a celebrity he is with all these things he was forced to be taught (meaning they’re not a part of his character that he wanted; he was forced to do them in one way or anything) and how incredible being him/his girlfriend must be. Even when she calls him “nice,” one has to recognize that Adrien has to put up a polite image. Look at the difference between Adrien and Chat Noir, the latter of whom has a mask of anonymity to work with? Adrien the nice guy suddenly becomes Chat Noir the “Nice Guy.”
Now, for comparison, let’s go back to the webisodes and see what Marinette has to say about Luka:
Marinette in “Luka as seen by Marinette”: You know, Luka is my friend Juleka's brother and one of the most talented people I know.
We start off with the “talent” thing again, but Luka’s talent for music is something he chose; it’s a part of him that he’s passionate about. That’s a huge difference.
Let’s continue.
Marinette: He also proved himself a great hero when Ladybug gave him the Snake Miraculous.
Marinette: But the thing I find most impressive about him is the way he can always tell how people are feeling.
Marinette: I may not be as intuitive as he is--
Heroic. Empathetic. Intuitive.
Those are character traits. They are integral pieces to Luka’s personality, and they bring Marinette comfort. She’s normal around Luka because their romance is normal: two people who love each other and just make each other happy.
In an age where media makes romance all about characters turning to mush or losing themselves around the person they love, Lukanette ends up feeling real specifically because it doesn’t do that.
Lukanette is as it should be: Marinette and Luka are friends first, crushes second. Their first priority is the relationship aspect that’s devoid of romance, which is why Marinette honestly considers her feelings for Luka in “Frozer” instead of blindly jumping in whereas Luka respects Marinette’s agency and simply assures her that he’ll be there for her no matter what.

Here in this diary! (I think I know but I wanna seeee)
...I was honestly gonna save these for the next two WIPWednesdays, but then someone said @lukanettejune had Villain!Luka as today's prompt (6/4), and it just seemed like it'd be fun to share this today?
Because I've been sitting on Villain!Butterfly!Luka for a while now without having a lot of time to work on it, and I'm pretty sure the only ones I've discussed it with are the OG LBSC crew. And y'all will never believe when I say our Fluffy Meet Cute Queen is the one who gave me the prompt. 😁
The prompt started with Marinette recording Guardian/Ladybug-specific things in her diary, in case anything ever happened to her (because superheroes typically don't have a long life expectancy lbr), to explain - or to lead the next Guardian. I can't remember if Luka specifically getting the diary/Marinette giving it to him was the original idea (it's LBSC it probably was), but it...ran away with me. And Shadowman was born.
The summary: Under normal circumstances, Luka would never read someone’s diary. But Marinette’s been missing since Ladybug’s death, and he’s desperate. Every page gives him new insight into the girl he was realizing he never really knew. Every page reveals just how much Paris had failed its beloved heroine – how much he had failed her. Now Luka Couffaine is out for revenge, and the only person who could stop him is gone.
So here's what I've got.
We open on the death of Ladybug. It's the final showdown with Hawkmoth, and Viperion is the only 'temporary' hero there because LB thought they'd need Second Chance (and he's the only one she really trusts anymore). Viperion and Chat Noir are standing over LB's body, and Hawkmoth is cackling behind them, Mayura crumpled at his feet. He tells them he might not have won, but they haven't either - "Your hero is dead! Your precious Ladybug is DEAD!"
And Viperion walks over and just clocks him. He takes Hawkmoth and Mayura's Miraculous, but when he turns around Chat and Ladybug are gone. This leads him to believe Chat has LB's body/her Miraculous - but he's...confused. Did this mean they won? He hears the sirens approaching and waits for the police. Before they take hi away, Gabriel asks him: "Have you actually won anything? Is Paris truly safe?"
Two weeks pass. It's a mixed bag: Hawkmoth is defeated, but Chair Noir hasn't been seen or heard of since the defeat, and Ladybug is dead. Paris is safe but in mourning. Luka is guilt-ridden over Ladybug's death, convinced he could have prevented it and his failure to fix it makes him an unworthy Snake. He renounces Sass, and he's been keeping the Snake, Butterfly, and Peacock in a safe place.
In this 'verse, Luka doesn't know or suspect that Marinette is Ladybug. Immediately after the battle, Luka called Marinette. He needed to talk to her, to see her - but she never answered. He tried to go over the next morning, but Sabine calls him and lets him know Marinette wasn't in her bed that morning. They didn't hear her leave, but she's not answering her phone and they can't find her - has he seen her? So for two weeks he has been at the bakery almost constantly, tirelessly helping Tom and Sabine search for Marinette. No one can find her. No one's heard from her. And he's starting to go a little nuts.
(Note that this takes place during summer - HM was defeated right before break. Dingo's back in Australia for the summer, which is important for Reasons. Luka's not in school, stopped going to work, and is using pretty much all his time to help look for Marinette.)
So it's been two weeks. No akumas because no Hawkmoth, a dead Bug, and a missing Marinette. Luka's at the bakery, shambling around Marinette's room. Tom and Sabine are downstairs, waiting on a call from Roger who may have found a lead. And Luka's just poking around, spiraling, when he notices...the box with Marinette's diary is open. It wasn't open before. And there, on top of her diary, are two letters: one addressed to him and one addressed to Chat Noir.
So he reads his. It's a goodbye/Just In Case letter. She explains how she was hoping he wouldn't find it/she wouldn't need it. She'd set a magical lock on the box, so that if something happened and she didn't come back...and she's sorry. She's so sorry, because she never wanted to drag Luka back into this, but she needed him. She tells him her diary will explain everything: she wrote everything down, and she always thought it was because she just loved to journal, but she realized it was because she never had any proper training. The next Ladybug/Guardian deserves better. If she doesn't make it, the next LB/Guardian has to be prepared. Better than she was.
And Luka can't move. Can't breathe, can't think. Because the letter had been addressed to him, and he wasn't going to read it, but he had hoped maybe there was a clue, except the clue was...Marinette is Ladybug.
Ladybug is dead.
...Marinette is dead.
And it's all his fault.
And he reads her diary, convinced he had to have misunderstood...but it's all there. Everything. Becoming Ladybug, her spiraling feelings for Adrien, Chat being so pushy with his affections, her troubles with Lila and the class, the expulsion, Alya constantly pushing/pressuring her with Adrien, becoming Guardian, feeling like she had to bear everything because Chat was so lackadaisical/reckless/self-sacrificing, her growing feelings for Luka...and Luka realizes it's true. She was Ladybug, and she was going through so much more than she ever let on. And he realizes that all of them - even him - only made it worse. And they're not going to find Marinette, because Ladybug is dead, and they never found Ladybug's body, and...he just goes numb.
He walks out of her room. Out of the bakery. He doesn't answer Tom or Sabine when they ask if he's ok. He just...walks. And he doesn't fully realize any of this/where he was going/doing until he wakes up the next morning in his bed with tears still drying on his face. And Juleka's there, and she's like "bro wtf?" because he's freaking her the hell out, and he just says: "...she's gone."
And for the first time ever, Luka looks at Juleka and is...angry. Furious. And he can't talk to her. He realizes he blames her. He blames himself. He blames everyone: her 'friends', her classmates, her family, Paris...if they had all tried harder, been better, then she wouldn't be...if they hadn't left her all alone...
And Luka just Shuts Down. Everyone's worried about him, but he won't talk about it. He's closing himself off to everyone - even Juleka and Anarka. Sabine calls Anarka, because Luka went from being at the bakery every day helping the search to nothing, but Anarka has no idea?
Luka keeps rereading the diary. He's stuck in this loop of "I should have known," "we should have helped her," "this is our fault..."
And another week or so passes. There's still no sign of Marinette, except now Luka knows why - knows that she's never coming back. And he finally goes back to the bakery to tell Tom and Sabine what he knows, because it's cruel to put them through this any longer. He has the diary, her letter, and the three Miraculous stones with him. And they're all sitting in the kitchen, and he's trying to talk and failing to find the words.
The news is playing in the background: Nadja is doing a special on the rise and fall of Paris's beloved heroine. She comments how Chat Noir hasn't been seen since the "battle that freed Paris from Hawkmoth's reign of terror" and speculates that it's because he's mourning his lover. And Luka just...snaps. Shouts "That lying bitch!" at the television. Sabine asks if he's ok, but he's not - Ladybug is gone. Marinette is gone. And nobody cares. Nobody realized they caused it. And they need to be held accountable - they need to pay.
Tom and Sabine knew about Silencer, of course, but they've never seen calm, sweet Luka so angry before - and it terrifies them. And Tom tries to tell Luka that it's ok - Marinette's not gone, not like Ladybug is. They're going to find her. They can't give up hope. And Luka realizes her own parents didn't even know. They didn't notice. They did nothing to see or stop how she was hurting. And as much as he loves them, he realizes they must pay, too - and he's the only one who can make them. He has her diary. He has the Butterfly. He can make them all realize how alone they left her. He can make them all feel as hopeless as they made her feel - as he feels now.
And he tells Tom he's wrong: Marinette is dead. Marinette was Ladybug, and she's dead, and she's never coming home, and it's all their fault - even his. But they don't believe him, and he leaves without showing them the diary. He just feels...defeated.
Back at the Liberty, he comes home to find Juleka and Rose watching the same report. And he retreats to somewhere deep in the Liberty, somewhere private, where he can don the Butterfly. He starts flipping through the diary, and he finds a passage where Marinette was venting about Nadja: her journalistic integrity ("No wonder Alya thinks its' ok when THAT'S Paris's example!"), the Prime Queen interview when she was more interested in pushing LadyNoir than discussing Hawkmoth, about how she's ALWAYS been like that, how many times she's called her last-minute to watch Manon to chase a story...and it's important to note that none of these things are inherently bad, or that Marinette is saying Nadja's awful for them. She's venting in her diary, like you do. But Luka's in such a dark place by this point that it only makes things worse.
He tears the page out and keeps reading and rereading it. Keeps thinking how Nadja must pay. HE summons Nooroo, and before Nooroo can speak Luka tells him everything that happened. Hawkmoth's gone, but so is LB. That Paris let their Guardian fall. Nooroo is devastated because that means Tikki's gone, too, and what about the Miracle Box? Luka assures him he'll take care of the Box, but Paris has to answer for what they did. Nooroo agrees to help, gives Luka a basic rundown of the Butterfly's powers, and Luka transforms - except Nooroo didn't explain everything, and Luka didn't have Marinette's training, so he doesn't realize Nooroo doesn't need negative emotions. He thinks you have to upset someone to create an akuma.
So he takes the diary page to the TVi studios and confronts Nadja on air. He introduces himself as Shadowman. (For a hot second he considers introducing himself as 'Shadowmoth' - which I would like to point out this story was started before that name was dropped so fuck you Gabriel - but it's too close to 'Hawkmoth', and Hawkmoth was the one who killed Marinette. He refuses to be associated with him/take his name.) He tells Nadja and the world that Ladybug was Marinette Dupain-Cheng. That Marinette is dead because Ladybug is dead. And that Paris caused it.
He accuses Nadja of sensationalizing Ladybug and the akumas/battles. He reads the diary page on air. Nadja doesn't believe him at first, but then he gives her the page and she recognizes Marinette's handwriting. Realizes he's right. She's overcome by guilt/grief, and Shadowman creates an akuma. It goes into the diary page, and Prime Queen is reborn as Telecaster.
And this was all live. All of Paris is watching the broadcast, and they know they aren't safe.
Cut to where Adrien's been hiding. He sees the whole thing, and he can't believe it - until he hears the people in the studio screaming. He realizes he has to do something, because Paris isn't safe anymore, and this time there's no Ladybug to fix his mistakes.
Back at TVi, Telecaster is attacking everyone. As Nadja she was determined to tell the news, even to the point of amping up stories for ratings - but that was kinda forced by her producer? So she's going after the bigwigs at the studio for forcing her to be so ratings-focused/sensationalistic. And she's just destroying the studio, which is...fine. Paris has other media outlets...right? It's just chaos.
Chat Noir finally shows his face and demands to know what Shadowman thinks he's doing/who he is. Part of Shadowman's disguise is literal darkness, so he lets the shadows recede and lets Chat actually see him. And Chat realizes it's Viperion/Luka - and he pleads with him to stop. That LB/Marinette wouldn't want this - that she loved this city and knowing he was attacking it would kill her.
And it's just...the wrong thing to say. Shadowman says the city was what killed her, and they have to answer for it. That Chat has to answer for it. But Chat doesn't understand - he was LB's partner? Her friend? He was at the final battle with her - how is her death his fault?
But Shadowman tells him it's not his time yet. He is coming for him - he will get his Miraculous back for the Box - but not yet. He will get LB's Miraculous back (note that he's operating under the belief that Chat has LB's body/Miraculous, so he honestly believes CHat will just use them to purify the akuma and fix the damage - except Chat doesn't and can't). But Paris must suffer first, just like Marinette suffered. He disappears before Chat can go after him - and then Telecaster is attacking and he has to focus on her.
And Chat does defeat Telecaster, but there's no LB. No one to purify the akuma or fix the damage. He doesn't actually have her Miraculous, so what now? (This leads to Chat having a growing collection of butterfly jars with akumas and no idea how to fix it. Paris needs LB - he needs LB.)
After leaving Chat to deal with Telecaster, Shadowman goes back to the bakery to retrieve the Miracle Box. Marinette's skylight was always open (he always assumed it was because it's the roof no one can enter through there - except now he realizes it was easy access for Ladybug). Tom and Sabine hear noise from her room and burst in with umbrellas/paddles/whatever but freeze when they see Shadowman standing there with the Box. They try and stop him: they saw the report, they know who he is, they realize who Marinette was, and believe it's now their duty to protect the Box, since Marinette can't. And Shadowman is livid, because "You couldn't even protect her. You never even noticed...your home is supposed to be safe. Your parents are supposed to keep you safe. When did you ever do that?"
He akumatizees Tom and Sabine before he leaves: the dual-akuma Safe Harbor. There's no diary page left with them because Marinette never actually spoke out against her parents in the diary: it's just Luka's frustration with them. He leaves them there and goes back to the Liberty to retieve Sass, Duusu, and the diary.
Back at TVi, Chat realizes that if LB was Marinette and LB was the Guardian then Marinette would have the Miracle Box. He takes his coffee mug with the akuma and books it back to the bakery, except her skylight door is now locked? The balcony was always open to him, but is now locked? So he has to go in through the side/home door as Adrien.
Tom greets him. Is being very jittery/Concerned Parent and acting Weird - and so is Sabine. They're both worrying over him, apologizing about Gabriel, asking if he's ok - and he can't get a word in edgewise. Finally yells at them to stop - he needs to see Marinette's room. He needs to get the Miracle Box. And they just...freeze. They don't react at first. He tells them he knows they saw the news - everyone did - so they have to know that Marinette was LB. And LB had the Miracle Box/all the Miraculous gems, and he has to get them back. But they try and laugh it off (again, it's all very stilted), and he finally just transforms. Says he was LB's partner, and with her gone it's on him to protect the Box now. Except when he looks back at them the butterfly mask is over their eyes and he realizes they're akumatized, too - and he just gave his identity away to Shadowman.
Safe Harbor is like a Stepford version of Tom and Sabine. They're turning the bakery into a fortress because they couldn't keep Marinette safe, so now they're making it the ultimate safe haven. And even though Shadowman realizes Adrien's identity, Safe Harbor doesn't fully? They just see it as Adrien fighting back/resisting their protection - so they deem him a threat and start attacking him. (Again, no diary page here: the akumatized object is a family photo of Tom, Sabine, and Marinette.)
After the fight, Chat goes to trap the akuma in the coffee cup with the other one - only to realize the cup is empty. He remembers akumas can phase through objects, and he has no feasible way of trapping the akumas. But...Cataclysm destroyed Uncanny Valley. Could it maybe destroy akumas, too? Before he can try it, the akuma is released and a white butterfly flutters away.
Across the street, Shadowan is lurking and watching him. He doesn't understand why Chat didn't use Ladybug's powers to purify the akuma. Why isn't Chat fixing any of this? Does he want to watch the city burn? He thinks Chat's just being stubborn. Well, he can be stubborn, too. He has to up his game next time. He releases the akuma because, deep down, Shadowman is still Luka. He still cares about the city and the people he's going after. Maybe a little sliver of conscience not letting him go all-out yet?
So Luka returns to the Liberty long enough to retrieve Sass, Duusu, and the diary before he realizes he has to leave. Adrien is Chat, and Adrien was the one who chose him as Viperion, so Chat knows who he is/where to find him, too. Juleka catches him before he leaves, and says, "...I was afraid it was you. On the TV. Luka, you have to stop this." "None of you stopped. I don't see why I should, either."
Luka goes into hiding. He remembers reading about Master Fu's old shop in the diary. Master Fu had left it to Marinette as a safe house, but as far as he knows Chat doesn't go there anymore (no reason to) and doesn't realize he knows about it. (Eventually, later on, Chat does go there and catches Luka - so Luka ends up hiding out at Dingo's home, bc the Kings are in Australia for the summer/it's empty.)
Aaaand that's all I have of the outline so far. 😂 The idea is Luka creates a hit list using the diary: Nadja, Tom and Sabine, Mayor Bourgeois, Alya, The Girl Squad (yes even Juleka and Rose), Lila, Chloé, Marinette's class in general, Mlle. Bustier, M. Damocles, Master Fu, Chat Noir/Adrien, and finally Luka himself. He confronts each person with a page torn from the diary, and he uses Marinette's own words to convince them of their guilt. With the exception of Tom and Sabine, the akuma is always in the diary page. Chatdrien is Luka's 'last' target, because as Ladybug's partner he blames him most - except the real 'last target' is actually Luka.
He plans his final akuma almost like a suicide mission, hoping that Chat will Cataclysm him/take him out when Shadowman kills him, so they're both defeated simultaneously. Except...
Things don't go as planned. Because Ladybug wasn't dead. The Guardians were able to heal her. And she was never supposed to see Luka this way.

Stomach Bug Ch7
Family Bonding: Jason
It’s my birthday so thought I’d give everyone this chapter early! I hope you all enjoy it I look forward to any comments or suggestions you have for the future chapters.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.
If anyone was to ask Marinette how she found herself standing in a private gun range with a heavy pistol in hand aimed downrange at a cardboard cutout of a deranged clown she would have no idea how to answer. Jason was standing behind her leaning down to show her how to properly aim, fixing her grip and stance before holding her shoulders.
“Alright Pixie whenever you’re ready just pull the trigger.” Jason nodded straightening up once he was sure she was ready.
Marinette nodded, taking a slow deep breath before pulling the trigger. A loud bang sounded through the room as Marinette gently set the gun down. She turned looking up at Jason as she took her earplugs out. “How’d I do?” she asked.
Jason hummed squinting his eyes trying to see, “I don’t know if you hit it,” he said, stepping around to walk on the range to get a better look at the cutout. “Yeah sorry pixie doesn’t look like you hit it,” he shouted heading back to stand behind her.
“I told you I’m not that familiar with guns. It's next to impossible to get a gun let alone shoot one in Paris.” Marinette said putting her ear plus back in as Jason picked the gun up.
“That’s why I’ll teach you to shoot,” Jason grinned, fixing his safety glasses before unloading the clip into the cutout. Marinette watched as small groupings gathered around the forehead, heart, and groin. “It just takes a bit of practice and a steady hand and you’ll be a natural in no time.” He smiled as he fired the last bullet before setting the gun down.
“I’m just not sure if guns are my thing,” Marinette said as Jason walked onto the range again to pick up the cut out and bring it back so they could examine the groupings, “I never took an interest in firearms, though most weapons are illegal in Paris.”
“Really? What about self-defense?” Jason asked looking down at Marinette.
“Most people would have pepper spray but it had to be less than 100 milliliters.” She shrugged, “I usually had a small can in my purse just in case luckily I only ever had to use it once.”
“Oh?” he asked, raising an eyebrow, “What happened to make you do that?”
“The heroes back home were sociable. Ladybug would give interviews and Chat Noir liked to joke with the public. Chat made a habit of dropping by my room to hang out and just talk; sometimes it was just chilling, other times he wanted advice. He was a great guy really it helped break up the routine you know.” She smiled leaning on the wall, helping Jason load bullets into the clips, “Eventually he started just coming into my room through my skylight and hung out on my chaise lounge until I got home if I wasn’t there.”
“That’s a red flag if I ever saw one,” Jason muttered, setting a clip down.
“Yeah well, I was lonely at the time my class was shunning me so any social interaction was a welcomed one. I didn’t mind though I did find it annoying when he’d try and bug me to get into Ladybug’s good graces.” She sighed rolling her eyes, “I managed to set up an interview with Ladybug for one of my ex-friends and Chat thought we were such good friends so I could put in a good word for him. I told him I wouldn’t and that Ladybug probably just wasn’t interested and he should respect that.”
“I’m guessing no one ever taught him to take no for an answer?” Jason asked looking over at Marinette as she just shrugged.
“I guess, he had it stuck in his head that he and Ladybug were soulmates because of their miraculous’ no matter how many times I or Ladybug explained that it didn’t work like that. Everything came to a head after the fall of Hawkmoth. He was publicly revealed along with Mayura, his partner, both were arrested and their families suffered from the fallout.” She set down her finished clip and crossed her arms over her chest, “Chat Noir paid me a visit about a month or so after, he… he wasn’t looking too good.”
Jason set down the gun he was working on and moved to stand beside Marinette placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“I told you he had a habit of just coming into my room to wait for me,” she said her voice going a bit soft as she glanced up at Jason, “My room was a converted attic space with a balcony that you access through the skylight. To get into my room you climbed a ladder and entered through a trapdoor, it’s a good space for privacy but it’s not so great if you have to escape.”
Jason tightened his hold on her gently pulling her into his side rubbing her back arm.
“When I came up I saw my skylight was open so Chat had to be in there but I didn’t see him, that made me a little worried but I chose not to listen to it and came up anyway. Once I was fully in he closed the door and trapped me inside, he… he looked different less… stable his eyes, which normally because of the Miraculous were a toxic green, looked bloodshot like he’d been crying. He wasn’t moving with the same playful easy steps he looked unbalanced. Everything just felt wrong like this wasn’t going to end well.”
“I reached for the pepper spray I keep in my bag and had it at the ready just in case and I tried talking to him. I asked him what was wrong, I asked him why he looked so unsettled, I tried just talking to him to get a response, but he wouldn’t even look in my direction. It was like it pained him to even look at me. Eventually, he did look at me and he was just crying, he was apologizing over and over and his words made no sense. I was terrified. He made me feel like he was going to do something awful. It was like he wasn’t anything like the same person.”
Jason slid down the wall to be eye level with Marinette squeezing a bit tighter to give her comfort as she tried to find the words to continue.
“He looked at me, no he looked through me it felt like and just lunged at me. I was so scared I just sprayed him without thinking and quickly jumped out of the way. I remember hearing him scream in pain and rubbing at his eyes as he cried. It’s burned into my memory he looked at me with such pain and sorrow on his face I felt awful for what I did. The pepper spray just fell from my hands and without thinking I grabbed a scrap of fabric and some water and started to clean his face. I just couldn’t stand and watch him suffer.”
“You’re better than most Pixie,” Jason muttered, patting her shoulder.
“Chat revealed himself,” She said before quickly rushing to correct herself when she felt Jason’s body tense, “Not like that! I mean he took off the mask he showed me who his civilian self was. He dropped the transformation and revealed himself to be a boy I knew quite well and he was the son of Hawkmoth. It made so much sense then, he… he was suffering so much having to fight a war against his father. Then when the war is over he still has to fight to prove his own innocents, it had to have just been too much.”
“He took off his miraculous and gave it to me, told me to give it to Ladybug. He didn’t think Ladybug would want anything to do with him if she saw who he was. If she knew he was the son of the man they were trying to take down, he said it would break him worse to see her hate him or worse pity him.”
“So he gave his miraculous to you, someone who has some connection to Ladybug, to get it somewhere safe.” Jason hummed leaning his head back against the wall, “How is he doing?”
“A few weeks later he left Paris and moved in with his aunt and cousin. He was a good guy just mixed up with the wrong people, he was very sheltered and was raised to be seen not heard. I debate some days on reaching out to him, seeing how he’s doing, maybe catch up and rebuild the friendship we had. He’s dating one of my friends and she occasionally gives me updates about him that she thinks I need to know.”
“Well, Pixie if you ask me I say shoot him a text. He trusted you enough to unmask himself and show his most vulnerable side to you. If there’s one thing I know is that you keep those loyal to you close, I don’t know the full story with this guy. He might have hurt you, he might not have but he came to you at his weakest and trusted you enough to help him.” He said straightening up and pulled her into a firm hug, “I know you’ll make the right choice for you, I feel like you got a good handle on making the right choices.”
“Thanks, Jay,” she smiled hugging him back, “You have any other guns we can shoot, maybe I’m just not good with handguns.”
“I like the way you think Pixie.” He grinned pushing off the wall and went over to the gun cabinet opening it wide for her to see the array of handguns, rifles, and shotguns for them to choose from, “Alright pixie, pick your poison.”
~.~.~.~
“You make absolutely no sense you know that right Pixie?” Jason asked watching as Marinette grinned up at him after landing a headshot on another deranged clown cut out with the shotgun. “I mean the kickback alone on that thing should be sending you back.” He said as Marinette set the gun down giggling at Jason’s confusion.
“Well with shotgun it doesn’t have to be as accurate right?” she asked, rubbing her shoulder, “It’s scattershot so it makes it more forgiving.”
“I guess but let’s call it on that before you bust up your shoulder or bruise it.” He said taking the shotgun storing it away in the gun cabinet as Alfred came in to check on them.
“Master Jason, Miss Marinette are you two having fun?” Alfred asked, noticing all the empty shells on the floor.
“Yeah, Jason just showed me how to shoot a shotgun.” Marinette smiled, “Though my shoulder is a bit sore now.” She said rubbing it a bit harder wincing at the deep ache.
“Perhaps you two should call it quits for today and do something less… explosive.” Alfred offered, “All this gunfire can’t be good for the baby let alone quiet. I heard the shotgun from the other side of the manor.” He added before leaving.
“Well,” Jason hummed, closing the cabinet, “We should run.” He grinned picking Marinette up and broke into a dead sprint out of the gun range and through the winding halls. Marinette held on tightly a surprised shout echoing through the halls as he skidded around a corner before running for the other side of the manor.
“Just how big is this place?” Marinette asked looking around wide-eyed as they raced through the halls.
“I don’t know but I’m like 80 percent sure if someone broke in here it’d take them a week to find their way out.” Jason joked as he slowed down to a large set of double doors gently pushing the doors open before closing them tightly behind him before gently setting Marinette down on her feet, “We should be safe here for a little while though at least until Alfred comes to find us for dinner.”
“Where is here?” Marinette asked looking around a soft gasp coming from her mouth as she saw all the books lining the shelves.
“Welcome to my favorite place, the Wayne Manor Library.” Jason smiled walking to one of the shelves and plucked a book off before finding a comfortable plush chair to relax in, “Have a look around, find something to read, or if you want there are puzzles and board games in that cabinet over there.” He added motioning to a cabinet in the corner.
Marinette wandered around the shelves looking over the books, she noticed some were much more loved than others as they have visible use while others looked to be brand new. She eventually settled on a well-loved adventure book and carried it back over to the chairs and took a seat near Jason as she curled up to read.
The following few hours were much calmer than the previous bonding activity, instead of a loud bang to hurt the ears there were jokes and laughs about the antics the protagonists in their books got up to. Marinette smiled from her position lying upside down on the chair with her head hanging off as she read lines from her book.
“Before you leave Gabriel may I offer you some key advice before you go to visit the Sirodanes?” Marinette spoke her voice lowered and accented to sound like a Viking man, “Take a larger cart they value strength as well.” she finished before bursting into giggles.
“So wait,” Jason chuckled looking over at her, “Gabriel and Eclipse are leaving the Vryhuns with a big cart just full of presents, and the Thane is telling them they need a bigger one?” he smiled.
“Yeah from what I gathered the Vryhun are really big on strength and bravery which Eclipse had in spades so everyone was trying to court her, so they all gave her presents. It’s rude to just turn them down or throw them away so instead they’re taking them with them.” Marinette giggled sitting up and closed the book setting it aside, “Though if the Sirodanes are the same I feel a bit sorry for Eclipse she’ll never get any peace from the suitors.”
“I don’t know, maybe she likes the attention I mean, she stuck around Gabriel and all he seems to do is fawn over her and shower her in praise.” Jason said, closing his book and set it aside, “Who’s to say she isn’t using all these presents to make Gabriel jealous.” He grinned, wiggling his eyebrow.
“Oh what a semi-immortal woman can’t hang around an eccentric man who is determined to explore some hidden islands in the middle of uncharted waters?” Marinette asked, raising an eyebrow, “Not everyone has to date you know, and besides I don’t think Gabriel could handle Eclipse in a romantic setting.”
“Eh you got me there she seems really dominant.” Jason chuckled leaning back in his seat, “Though which did you like more sitting here reading or shooting?”
“Hmm I like both; this was a nice way to wind down after the shooting and I got to find a new book series to read.” She smiled looking at the book, “Do you have the others?”
“Probably unless the author is still working on them.” He shrugged, getting up from his seat and grabbing his books, going over to the shelves to put them away. Marinette relaxed in her chair taking a deep breath as she sunk into the plush cushions further the calm and quiet helping to lull her into a semi-conscious state.
Jason came back after a while noticing Marinette barely awake and smiled grabbing a blanket and set it over her before taking his seat again and picked up another book nearby to keep reading. The library fell into a soft silence with only Marinette’s gentle breathing and the occasional rustle of paper as Jason turned the pages.
~.~.~.~
“Now tell me why you thought it would be wise to leave Todd alone with Marinette.” Damian grit out through clenched teeth as he gripped his sword tightly. “In what world is it ever a smart idea to leave Todd alone with anyone?” he growled.
“Now it can’t be that bad Little D.,” Dick said, keeping his hands up in a calming manner as Tim stayed behind him, “I’m sure everything is okay.”
“We all heard the shotgun, Grayson.” Damian snapped, advancing only stopped by a loud clearing of the throat.
All three turned and looked at Alfred standing in the doorway, “Master Damian please refrain from causing your brother’s bodily harm in the house, blood is quite hard to get out of antique rugs.” He said looking at Damian as he lowered his sword still glaring at the other two, “Now I’ve come to inform you that Miss. Marinette and Master Jason have vacated the gun range. I do believe they are now hiding out in the library so rest assured they are no longer doing any dangerous activities.”
“Thank you, Alfred.” Tim nodded as Damian visibly relaxed knowing Marinette was no longer alone with Jason and firearms.
“Now I must go begin preparations for dinner, please do try to not harm each other.” Alfred nodded before making his way out of the room and down to the kitchen.
Once Alfred was far away Damian looked over at his two brothers with a cold death glare, “If anything is out of place on Marinette thanks to you allowing her to be alone with Jason unsupervised for hours. I will make it my life’s goal to make you regret ever entering this manor.”
“She’s fine Jason isn’t that bad,” Dick said, trying to calm Damian down.
“He cut Tim’s throat.” He snapped.
“It was an accident!” Tim shouted before getting a pained expression, “Maybe, look, it was house rules not to bring up shared traumas.” He glared.
“Okay, how about we all calm down and go to the library and just see how everything is doing? What could they possibly do in the library but read or play a card game.” Dick said trying to placate his two youngest brothers.
“Fine.” Damian glared putting his sword away stalking out of the room.
Dick and Tim exchanged glances before following behind him keeping a few paced behind to not receive his wrath once more. They silently made their way through the halls until coming to the double doors of the library. Damian pushed the doors open looking around until his eyes landed on Marinette curled up in a chair with a blanket over her and Jason seated near her reading.
Jason looked up and waved at them putting his book aside, “Hey guys Pixie’s just taking a quick nap.” He smiled keeping his voice low.
“Todd, care to explain why we heard gunshots.” Damian glared as he quickly headed for Marinette.
“Hmm could be because I showed her how to shoot.” Jason shrugged grinning wide, “She’s a natural, she shot Joker's head off like three times.” he chuckled.
“You let her use the shotgun?!” Dick gasped looking horrified, “Jason she is five foot and pregnant what made you think that was a good idea?” he hissed.
“Can you all keep it down?” Marinette groaned, blinking her eyes open, “this is a library.”
“Habibti, are you okay? You’re not bruised or burned anywhere right?” Damian asked, trying to look her over.
“I’m fine Dami, just a sore shoulder but I’ll live.” She yawned shifting around to sit up properly, “It was a lot of fun but don’t know if I’ll keep up shooting it’s really loud.” she hummed.
“How about you do not do any more shooting until after the baby is born and you’re all healed up,” Damian said sitting in the chair with Marinette pulling her to sit across his lap.
“Fine no more guns,” Marinette giggled rolling her eyes as she rested her head on his shoulder. Damian nodded content with that and relaxed back in the chair. They all fell into comfortable chatter talking about what they were all getting up to; however, it felt more like an interrogation for Jason about just what he was having Marinette shoot.
Marinette watched on in amusement as the three eldest seemed ready to go to war over letting her shoot some guns. All too soon the library doors opened as Alfred entered calling their attention, “Dinner is ready young masters.” He said bowing before exiting the room making his way down to the kitchen.
“Well, I think today has been a lot of fun.” Marinette smiled climbing out of Damian's lap stretching her back out, “I might actually get a good night's sleep tonight.” She added before she made her way out of the library the boys following behind her like overgrown ducklings. Soon everyone was taking their seats at the table and settled in to enjoy their dinner.
Everyone was eating and having fun chatting about different topics, Jason couldn’t stop talking about Marinette’s skill with a shotgun, Dick had to make sure he praised her on her flexibility, and Tim just noted her keen eyes and how perceptive she was. Marinette blushed and smiled at all the praise trying to deflect as much as possible. At some point Bruce had snuck in and watched all the children eat and share stories, he smiled softly just enjoying the chatter and pleasant atmosphere.
All too soon dinner was over and everyone was going their separate ways for their evening routines, Marinette made her way to Damian’s room and gathered her clothes before heading in to take a shower. She set her clothes down on the counter as Tikki reappeared stretching out as she layout on top of Marinette’s pajamas.
“Sorry to keep you locked up all day,” she said as she turned the shower on and waited for the water to warm up, “We can’t risk the others seeing you.”
“I know Marinette at least now I can stretch out and relax.” Tikki hummed relaxing on the soft fabric, “when you bake in the morning can I get white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies?” she asked looking up at Marinette.
“If they have the ingredients to make it then yes,” Marinette smiled and hopped into the shower to clean up from the day taking her time to gently wash her hair and scrub off all the sweat and grime from the day. Once she was cleaned and wrapped up in a fluffy bathrobe she was nearly asleep on her feet as she took her time to blow dry her hair until it fell in gentle waves down her back.
Tikki had fallen asleep during Marinette’s shower so she gently picked her up and set her down on a few folded towels so she could get dressed. Marinette gathered Tikki up and carried her out to her purse and gently laid her down placing a handkerchief over her like a blanket before gently kissing her forehead and moved to lie in bed and get some much-needed sleep.
Damian came in not long after Marinette had turned in for the night and smiled before going about his own evening routine and climbed into bed giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead before laying back pulling her to his chest as he fell asleep.

The Master: Master List
----------------------------------------
“Good morning, class, as I mentioned last week we have a transfer student,” Madame Bustier greets the class, smiling wide as if it weren’t a Monday morning. Damian rolls his eyes, avoiding anyone who looked like they wanted to talk and headed up to the back corner desk, where no one was sitting.
It didn’t take long for someone to ignore the social cues he’d dropped because there stood a tan, green-eyed girl.
“You should come sit with me, the class bully sits back here and you don’t want to get mixed up with that,” the harlot says, batting her eyelashes.
“I’ll take my chances back here,” Damian grumbles back, but once again she doesn’t take the hint.
“Lila, you’re in my seat,” another, sweeter, voice says. The harlot’s smile falters before she retreats down the stairs to stew in anger in her seat.
“You’re late,” he reprimands, looking at the apparent ‘class bully’.
“Welcome to our class, I’m Marinette, the class president,” She smiles, it doesn’t reach her eyes, she’s faking it.
“So class bully and president? Interesting mix.”
“Interesting assumption,” Marinette shrugs, pulling out her classwork. He raises an eyebrow and does the same, who does she think she is to talk back to him.
Needless to say, their relationship didn’t start out the best but it got better.
“I can’t believe they’re such imbeciles,” Damian breaths out, an almost laugh, Marinette thinks to herself. Damian has been in the class for a week now and absolutely hates and loves the class. He hates how stupid the class, but again loves the class because of how idiotic they are.
“What’d she say this time?” Marinettes sighs, sliding into her seat. This was becoming a routine almost, she sits down right before the bell rings and usually has enough time to hear Lila’s amazing stories from Damian.
“It was a classic Jagged Stone story,” Damian sighs.
“I literally know Jagged, and they know that I know him, but yet, in the beginning, I was ‘too jealous’ and now they won’t even listen to anything I say,” Marinette shrugs.
“You know Jagged?” Damian asks, raising an eyebrow.
“That’s not important, they can look up any of the information she says without having a personal contact, now shhh, class is starting,” Marinette says, ending the conversation. She avoids talking about herself, almost as bad as he does. He doesn’t mind it too much because she doesn’t appear to be a threat, but yet again appearances can be deceiving.
A month into the hell that is his class, he ran into her during one of the many akuma attacks. She had just run into a closet he was running for, he was a bit worried about her because Lila likes to take action during the chaos. He was expecting to see some cliche scene of Lila corning her, but when he opened the door, there stood the Parisian hero.
“What the actual--” He was cut off by her quickly butting in.
“Oh my god! You can’t anything, I have to go, but-”
“I understand, go fight,” Damian says, effectively stopping her rambling.
They had an awkward conversation after her and Chat Noir defeated the akuma, she picked him up and dragged him to a secluded roof away from the public prying eyes, and the numbing idiocy of the class.
“So another way you knew she was lying is you’re Ladybug,” Damian says as soon as they touch down.
“I would’ve known it without being Ladybug, seriously a foreign girl comes in announcing that she’s best friends with a hero but she's been in the country like three days tops, it’s pretty obvious,” Ladybug huffs, dropping her transformation. “Why’d you follow me into the closet?”
“Ehh Lila likes to come up with lies during the chaos, so if you had an alibi I thought it would be helpful,” Damian shrugs.
“Aww, you care about my well being,” Marinette coos, nudging him.
“You’re bearable,” Damian mumbles, a hint of warmth spreading across his cheeks, must be the afternoon sun.
“That’s the nicest thing I’ve heard you say since you transferred,” Marinette points out.
“That doesn’t matter, now let’s leave,” he says, standing.
“You really want to go back to class?” Marinette asks, standing as well.
“No but I don’t want to sit in the sun, so let’s go somewhere else. Are going to get us down?”
“Sorry, I can’t at the moment, but we can climb down the fire escape,” Marinette says, rubbing the back of her neck.
“That will do,” Damian says, easily moving down the escape.
“Can we stop by my house real quick I want to grab a sketchbook, if that's ok with you,” She asks, pointing at the bakery that’s just down the street from the school.
“You live above the bakery?”
“Yeah, you hungry?”
“No, I don’t like sweets.”
“Your loss then,” Marinette shrugs, entering the back door. She appears a couple of minutes later, putting cookies in her purse. He raises an eyebrow but doesn’t question it. They walk over to the park and sit under a tree in the shade. He just sits in the shade and lets sounds of the birds singing, the breezing leaves, and the light trickling water take over his sense. It was a bit later when he hears her start humming if it were practically anyone else, he would’ve snapped at her to stop it, but her humming was calming.
He honestly should’ve seen it before he responded. It was a month after the revelation of her being the Parisian hero. They were walking around the Seine near evening after the defeat of another akuma and another day of drama with the harlot and sheep. Marinette had leave early due to the akuma and he was left to deal with the idiots by himself
“What’s the matter?” he questions.
“Oh, sorry, I have a lot on my mind,” Marinette says quietly. He steps in front of her and lifts her chin.
“What’s on your mind?” She looks up at him, his breath hitches in his throat, her eyes are glistening in the sunset.
“I… I don’t want things to change, but,” she pauses, taking a deep breath. “I really like you, you’re kind to me, even though you don’t try to show it and-”
“Enough,” Damian cuts her off, she stands in front of him, vulnerable. She’s trying to distract her self by rolling a rock underneath her foot. “If you don't want things to change, then don't change them.” He responds sternly.
“Umm, ok, I’m sorry, I’m just going to go home then. Umm! Good night!” She says, swinging her head up quickly, just enough to see her eyes glistening with tears before she turns her back and she rushing home.
“Why’d I say that?” Damian asks himself he watches her back and she rushes down the sidewalk. He has a strange urge to follow her, to pull her into a hug, and to, strangely enough, apologize for making her cry. “What’s the matter with me?” He sighs and agrees to talk to her tomorrow morning before class, as normal.
But that wasn’t the case, she slid into her seat just after the bell rung. Not only was that different, she was wearing make up, not enough for a majority of people to notice, but he knows her well, and her smile doesn’t reach her eyes again. He was going to try and talk to her during lunch, but conveniently Agreste calls for her attention as the bell rings before he could get a word out, they’re already out the door.
He feels weird, he knows he shouldn’t he also doesn’t understand why or what that feeling is. His feelings have been pretty abnormal since he got to know Marinette. When he met her, he hated her, but honestly, he hates everyone he meets so he didn’t expect to end up not hating her in the end. She was different than anyone he had ever met, she was kind, without knowing who he was, her smile was contagious. She beautiful but was humble and wasn’t a harlot like other women who had attempted to his attention.
“Grayson, I have a problem,” Damian says, sitting down in the library to eat his lunch in peace.
“What’s up, Birdie, you never call me,” Dick asks.
“This girl said that she likes me.”
“It’s not the first time, you’ve never had a problem rejecting girls before what’s up?”
“She’s my acquaintance.”
“So you like her? What's the problem?”
“Like her?”
“Do you have romantic feelings for her?”
“Explain.”
“Do you like it when she’s around? Is she apart of your life and it feels like a piece is missing if she’s not there?”
“But that could be platonic as well.”
“It could be, but do you ever have urges to hold her hand, if she is crying to wipe away the tears, or to hold her in a hug?” (I had no idea how to write this btw, almost asked for help but imma too awkward)
“She cried last night and all I wanted to do was hug her and apologize,” Damian sighs.
“You were going to apologize? She must be special.”
“She’s fantastic, a literal angel,” Damian sighs, slouching in his chair to look at the ceiling. “She takes care of and loves animals. She so good with kids, even with brats.”
“Talk to her, I’m sure she’ll understand,” Dick says, there a banging being him. “Sorry, I gotta go, Jason just walked in.” he says before hanging up.
“Talk to her?” Damian mutters to himself. “Do I have feelings for her?”
He heads back to class early, hoping to talk to her before class. There was one problem, she didn’t show up for afternoon classes along with Agreste.
He decides that he’ll take the work and notes to Marinette. He enters through the bakery, they had stopped there a couple of times before to pick up stuff sometimes a sketchbook and sometimes a snack. Sabine and Tom recognized him and let him in. He knocks on the trap door and hears a come in, he pushes it open and sees Agreste and Marinette in their pajamas, playing a video game.
“Agreste, Marinette,” Damian says, stepping into the room.
“Damian?” Marinette asks, turning surprisingly pale pretty quickly.
“I brought your stuff and I wanted to talk to you,” Damian says, rubbing the back of his neck, looking at the ground.
“Ummm… sure, Adrien can you give us a minute?” Marinette says, standing up from her spinning chair.
“You hurt her again, I’ll cataclysm you,” Adrien says, opening the trap door before disappearing underneath.
“Umm first, here’s your stuff and notes,” Damian says, handing her them. “Another thing, I’m going to guess you noticed, but I’m not good with emotions in general.”
“Yeah, I kinda figured.”
“It took me a bit, but I talked to my brother today,” Damian pauses, taking a deep breath.
“Where’s this going? I don’t want to get hurt again,” Marinette says, taking a seat of her chaise.
“I didn’t realize it before I talked to Grayson, he’s my brother, but I like you. I missed you in class and I don’t ever want to see you cry again. I want to be able to you without it being weird,” Damian says, rubbing the back of his neck, looking anywhere but her.
“You like me?” Marinette asks, standing up.
“I hate the fact that I made you cry, I never want to see sadness in your beautiful blue eyes ever again. You’re too good for me, you are an angel,” Damian says, taking a deep breath.
“I’m just me though,” Marinette says, looking at the ground. Damian steps forward, tipping her chin to look up at him.
“And you’re perfect,” Damian says, Marinette reaches on her tiptoes and kisses his cheek.
“And you owe me for playing my heart, I honestly thought you didn’t like me and I had a mini-crisis,” Marinette giggled.
“Would you like to go adopt a hamster?”
“That’s perfect if we can her name her Fluffy,” Marinette smiles.
“We’ll talk about the name,” Damian chuckles.
“I’m open to a discussion,” Marinette shrugs.
Bonus:
“I just had the weirdest conversation,” Dick says, hanging up his phone to look at Jason.
“What’d ya mean?” Jason asks, plopping down in a chair across from Dick before slouching to put his feet on the desk, taking a bite from his apple with a solid crunch.
“I think Damian in love,” Dick says, causing Jason to choke on his apple.
“What the fack did I miss?”
Bonus Bonus:
“Remember how Damian was in an emotional dilemma,” Dick asks, entering the dining room.
“Damian has emotions?” Tim asks, throwing his coffee back like a shot, or maybe it was a straight-up espresso shot, Dick wasn’t really paying attention.
“Yeah, not the point, not only does he have a girlfriend they have a hamster named Nightingale. Probably so Bruce can’t try and turn her into a bird,” Dick says, muttering the last bit.
“Hey I wouldn’t adopt Damian’s girlfriend, give me some credit,” Bruce says, taking the phone to look at the picture.

When your world comes crashing down don't cry
Chapter 3 - Confessing
AO3
I’m baaaack!
And even though his world seemed to be crashing down at that very moment, his tired brain came up with a plan. He would get his confirmation. And after Nino told him what he already knew, Adrien would stop being selfish for once in his life. He would leave them alone. He would ask his father to take him out of school, and his classmates would never have to deal with him again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Adrien, are you there? Dude, please, say something, I can’t see you…” Nino was speaking to him. Somehow, the fall his phone suffered had made it accept the call, and so Nino was currently trying to get Adrien to speak to him.
“C’mon dude, at least turn your phone so I can see you… I’m only seeing the sky, where are you?” The subconscious fear of abandonment that followed Adrien everywhere was screaming at him to say something. To let Nino know that he was there so he wouldn’t get sick of being ignored and leave. But he couldn’t find his voice!
Adrien opened his mouth, but no sound came out, only a weak strangled cry seemed to have made its way out of his throat. He wanted to let Nino know he was there, but he couldn’t show him how miserable he must have looked at that moment. Adrien felt the tears cascading down his face and saw them hit the floor beneath him through his blurry vision.
“Adrien… please… I’m worried about you…” Nino was speaking slowly as if he was deliberately giving time for Adrien’s numb brain to process the words.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nino squinted at his phone, but no matter where he looked all he saw was the blue sky that was covering Paris. He waited in silence, giving time for Adrien to react.
“Can we… can we just stay like this ...” Adrien’s voice quivered, but at least Nino got an answer, and he released the breath he didn’t know he was holding in relief.
“Sure, dude!” He knew how Adrien struggled to get anything out of his system, so anything to make his best friend comfortable. But still, Nino was worried. Adrien hasn’t been his normal self lately, he needed to at least know if his best friend was safe.
“But, uh… Could you tell me where you are?”
A couple of seconds passed. Nino could hear his own rushed heartbeat.
“I’m uh…” Adrien’s voice sounded despondent. “I’m on a rooftop.”
Nino’s heart stopped beating.
“You’re what?”
Now, there were plenty of reasons why Adrien would be on a rooftop. He could be just chilling. The dude was weird like that. He could have been wandering and somehow found himself on that rooftop and was now enjoying the view. He could have been kidnapped by a crazy fan who was akumatised and gained wings so that they could specifically carry Adrien to a place high enough no one could reach and now his fate was in the hands of Ladybug and Chat Noir!
Or…
He could be there because he purposedly climbed it knowing that if he took a single misstep he would fall and-
No! His brain would not go down that road. Adrien was fine! Yes, he had been a bit weird lately, but he was fine! He had to be fine. He was okay! Nino would talk to him, and maybe convince him to hang out, they would laugh all afternoon while they played videogames, or took a stroll in the city, and this would all be left behind, they would laugh about how Adrien managed to get himself on a rooftop, and that was it!
“Why are you on a rooftop?” Nino had to get to the bottom of this. He needed to make sure his best friend was safe. He waited with bated breath for Adrien to reply.
A couple of seconds went by.
“I fell…” He heard his despondent voice, and he felt a stab in his chest. His eyes widened.
“You what??!” How did he fall on the rooftop?? What the heck was he even doing on a rooftop? That was it. Nino had to see him in that very moment, or he would have a stroke from sheer stress. He was sure of it. He could already feel his heart race, his brain going a thousand thoughts per second, thinking of every possible explanation as to why Adrien was on a rooftop, how he fell, if he was safe. Nino had to see him!
“How did that happen?? Dude!! Are you okay?” He really was trying his best to be patient, to let Adrien speak at his own pace. But worriedness was consuming his entire being at an alarming rate, and if he wasn’t reassured that Adrien was safe soon, he knew, he just knew that he was not going to be able to handle all of this, he would lose it for sure.
“I don’t know…”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He really was sick of lying, and Plagg was glaring at him, prompting him to speak.
His whole body was burning, an agonising slow fire that spread through his every muscle and gathered in his chest. His hands were shaking so badly. Dark spots were dancing right in front of his eyes. He was exhausted. So utterly exhausted from all the pain he was feeling, from all the lying and the isolation the universe had forced upon him.
He wished Nino was there beside him. He wished Nino would wrap his arms around him and tell him everything would be alright, that he didn’t hate him, that he wasn’t alone. He wished he could tell him the whole truth, but his identity must remain a secret. He couldn’t risk losing him, nor Plagg! He would never survive that loss!
Adrien gasped as he tried to gather his voice.
“I don’t know…” His voice wobbled. His eyes drifted to Plagg, who nodded at him. The dark spots across his vision were coalescing and Adrien blinked rapidly in a futile attempt to make them vanish.
He raised his right hand to his face, biting the back of it to try to keep himself grounded. He felt the tears rapidly hitting his hand.
“Adrien…” He was being so pathetic; all he could get from Nino was pity. He could tell it by the soft sigh his best friend made after he called his name in a whisper.
God! He tried to be flawless, he really did! He hid all the broken pieces deep inside his heart, covered all the cracks in his persona, because he knew, HE KNEW this would happen! He knew that the second he showed a single flaw to his friends they would get sick of him, just like his family did.
And don’t get him wrong, he did it! He managed to fool them all… he was perfect!
He just never thought his friends would also see all the ugliness he never cared to hide as Chat Noir. That was his mistake… Of course, Ladybug would never fall for that loud and obnoxious persona. Of course, his best friend would take a single look at him and immediately conclude that he wasn’t worth being around.
The pit on his stomach was growing heavier and heavier. Just one more question. He only had to ask a single question and that was it.
“Nino…” Adrien rasped, “Are you alone right now?”
“Yes! I’m in my bedroom. You can” Adrien ended the call in a rush, not caring to hear the rest.
He stood up abruptly and his head swarmed, but he would not be deterred. Just one more question.
Adrenaline flowed all over his bloodstream.
“Kid, what are you doing?” Plagg rushed to his side, looking at him as if he has finally gone mad. And maybe he had, it would explain what he was about to do anyway.
“Plagg claws out!” He wasn’t even completely transformed when he started to run.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He hung up.
Adrien was possibly seriously injured on a conspicuous rooftop somewhere in Paris, and he hung up on him.
That call might as well have been the last time Nino spoke to his best friend, and all he could do right now was stare dumbfounded at the black screen of his phone. And so, while his body was stuck, his feet rooted to his bedroom’s floor, his mind was increasingly catastrophising any thought he was having about Adrien’s current situation.
It was like the entire world stopped working for a minute.
And then, just as fast as it stopped working, it restarted, and his feet automatically moved towards the backpack that had been carelessly thrown at his bed in his rush to call Adrien in the first place.
He grabbed it while formulating an emergency plan to find Adrien and shove some sense into him. He was so out of his depth, maybe he should call the girls. Alya and Marinette are geniuses with emergencies. They would know what to do. Marinette always knows where Adrien is, it’s like the girl has a superpower. She would find him.
And Alya would prevent them both from freaking out because he was damn certain he was on the verge of a panic attack. And Marinette was no better. Especially when it concerned Adrien.
Yeah…
He would call them, and they would find him.
His chest was burning so badly, as if someone was pulling a thick rope around it, constricting him more and more each second.
Nino threw his backpack to his back and grabbed his phone as he started walking towards his bedroom door. But as soon as he unlocked his phone; he heard a soft tap at his window. He paused and looked at the source of the noise.
Nino’s eyes widened and he released a gasp as he saw Chat Noir perched on his window. His green feline eyes were staring at him urgently like they were telling him to let him in right away.
Nino moved in his direction, and as soon as he opened the window, Chat Noir practically threw himself inside, making him jump in surprise.
“Dude…” Nino could immediately tell something was seriously wrong with him. His whole posture was wrong. Chat Noir was supposed to be this confident, larger than life hero, but his vacant green eyes and the way his shoulders hunched while he turned his back at him made him look devoid of any of the characteristics Nino knew and adored.
Yes, Nino had been a jerk to him, and he has deeply regretted behaving the way he did ever since, but he never thought that day would cause such an impact on Chat Noir. It’s almost as if he was scared of Nino! He looked like he was trying to make himself appear as small as possible... so that Nino wouldn’t explode on him. Like he did last time they interacted….
His heart panged for the hero. And he looked down in shame.  His eyes drifted to the phone in his hand and all the panic that had been momentarily interrupted by Chat Noir’s impromptu visit came back with a vengeance.
He hated to have to leave Chat when he clearly wasn’t okay. But his best friend was lost on a rooftop somewhere. And he would always prioritise Adrien.
“Dude, I’m sorry, but”
Chat Noir suddenly turned and before Nino could react, he grabbed his shoulders harshly, and somehow, being careful not to hurt him. Chat Noir was shaking so badly, and now that Nino managed to look closer at him, he saw that he had been crying. The tears’ tracks were still fresh on his masked face.
“Nino, do you really think I’m annoying?” Chat blurted. A fatalistic vibe on the air lingered between them, like Nino’s answer would determine Chat’s entire fate.
“What?” He whispered in a daze.
Nino was so confused. When had he become such an important piece in Chat Noir’s life? And how did he even come up with that question?? When did Chat Noir so wrongfully conclude that Nino found him annoying?
“I’ve asked if you really think I’m a-annoying…” Chat’s voice cracked.
“I’ve heard the first time, but why are you asking me…” Wait a minute. He remembered this conversation. He was in the school’s basement. He had been enraged because he thought Chat Noir and Alya were secretly dating. He was so unfairly mad at Chat Noir, and he had gathered all that evidence he thought was so accurate. He had ranted about it in that basement to…
His eyes widened as he finally really looked at the disarrayed boy in front of him.
“Adrien…” He whispered. The other boy flinched.
“Nino, I need to know.” Adrien’s eyes were bright with unshed tears, his lower lip trembled as he bit into it.
Suddenly all his protective senses activated, and the urge to grab the boy in front of him in a crushing hug overwhelmed him. How had he not noticed it? It was so clear! Adrien’s puns that he only shared with Nino. Chat Noir’s timid posture when he thought no one was looking. Adrien’s detached smile when surrounded by strangers. Chat Noir’s confidence when he was the centre of attention. It was so obvious! And Nino never noticed.
“Adrien, I was so mad that day… I was so unfair to you…” He released a sob. “Ever since that awful, awful day that I’ve regretted ever saying those words, ever treating you the way I did!” He pulled his best friend into a crushing hug, sending them both to the floor, feeling Adrien freeze in position.
Gradually, he felt Adrien relax in his embrace. Nino had his eyes closed for he could not look into his best friend’s eyes at that moment. He had failed him so badly. He felt like trash. Adrien was hurting, and it was all because of him.
“I’m so sorry, dude.” He sobbed, “I don’t find you annoying, I never did! Not Adrien, and not Chat Noir! I’ve always adored you! I was so stupid!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adrien didn’t know how to react. Nino was hugging him. Clinging to him like he was his only lifeline. No one has ever treated him like this, he had to reassure him that he wasn’t mad. That all he ever wanted was to feel validated for once in his life, for someone to care.
“So, you don’t hate me?” He muttered in shock.
Nino immediately released him from the hug, and Adrien felt a gelid cold falling upon him suddenly. That hug was like someone had finally given him a droplet of water after years of being stranded in the desert, however, it was far from being enough for him.
Nino looked him in the eyes, and Adrien found himself looking down immediately, afraid that he had said the wrong thing.
“Adrien, look at me.” It wasn’t that stern disappointed tone his father always used when Adrien failed to meet his expectations. Those three words had been said softly, granting a strange sense of safety he had rarely been exposed to. His eyes slowly drifted upwards.
“I could never hate you. It’s literally impossible for me to hate you, dude.” Nino squeezed his shoulders.
Adrien wanted to believe him. Rationally, he knew that Nino was being completely honest with him, but everyone was leaving him behind. His family, Chloé, Ladybug…
So, no matter how sure he was that Nino’s words were sincere, there was always this small nagging part of his brain that kept telling him not to trust anyone, that he was all alone in the world and that that’s how it should be.
Nino must have noticed his hesitation as he asked, “What’s wrong?”
He looked down. Now that the adrenaline in his system was dissipating, exhaustion took hold of him, and his brain finally processed what had just happened. He already said too much. He broke the one rule that had been imposed on him ever since day one. He broke a rule that could potentially take his miraculous away from him, and strangely enough, that didn’t send him straight into a panic attack as it used to whenever he thought about that possibility. In fact, all he felt was relief.
Like a weight that had been crushing him had finally been lifted, and he was finally able to breathe! Like he finally had something to grab onto while the violent waves that had been sweeping all over him passed. And with this realisation, Adrien didn’t stand a chance. The dam was open now, and no barrier in the world would prevent the flood of words that started leaving his mouth.
“Everyone is leaving, Nino!” he took a sharp intake of breath. “Everyone is leaving, and no one cares that I’m left behind, no one cares to look back! And I can’t say anything about it because I’ll just add to the massive stress Ladybug is under and I’m supposed to be helping her! But she’s replacing me, right in front of my eyes, and I know she’s not doing it on purpose but I can’t help but think that this is exactly what people have always done. So, I don’t even know why I’m crying about this, because I should really be used to it!”
His brain was producing so many thoughts by the second, overwhelming his entire system and now that he had started speaking, he realised that he still had so much to say. But his head was going too fast for his mouth to follow, and so he found himself completely unable to utter a single word.
He pulled his hair to keep himself grounded, shutting his eyes in the process so that he could block out the entire universe, and focus on his disorganised thoughts.
Adrien felt Nino’s hands resting on top of his own, squeezing them softly, which helped him relax the tense hold he had on his hair.
“Adrien, I know that this is really hard to believe, especially how I’ve been such a terrible friend to you lately, but I promise you that I will never leave you. I love you, dude! Every single day I think about how lucky I am that you’re my best friend… If anything happened to you, I don’t think I could ever move on!” Adrien was looking so intensely at him, his brown eyes so bright, as if he was making sure the meaning of his words entered Adrien’s brain and stayed there.
“Adrien, you can always count on me,” Nino spoke slowly.
And for the first time, Adrien felt like someone cared. For the first time in his life, he knew he finally had someone on his side, who would stick with him no matter how awful things would get.
A warm wave spread across his chest, as his heart swelled with joy. Tears started to fall down his face, but for the first time in a long time, they weren’t accompanied by desperation and helplessness.
“Dude, don’t cry or else I’m going to start crying too!” Nino hugged him tight, his face was already wet as both boys burst into tears in each other’s arms.
Everything was so far from being over. Adrien still couldn’t say that he was fine. Ladybug was still leaving him behind. But now he had someone to share all his burdens with. Adrien was simply enough to someone! He was wanted! And he couldn’t find anything more perfect than that.

The Wavering Peahen: Chapter 6
When Nathalie started feeling oddly ill again, both she and Gabriel were worried that the Peacock Miraculous might somehow (impossibly) be to blame again.
So naturally, they pick someone else to be the Peacock for a bit. You know, as a test subject. Except the new Peacock… doesn’t exactly know that.

Marinette was starting to think that Hawkmoth had officially gone around the bend.
For months after the Miracle Queen attack, Hawkmoth and Mayura had hammered at the superheroes, both of them plus the regular akuma and a sentimonster showing up to the battles. The superheroes had struggled to adapt, sacrificing their free time and fun activities to find and train new allies to help them as needed and doubling up on Miraculous almost as often as not to have access to more powers. They had been managing- sometimes only by the skin of their teeth- but it was taking a lot of effort.
And then, all of a sudden, Mayura vanished, and Pavona took her place next to Hawkmoth.
The change by itself would have been odd enough even if Pavona was an equally good fighter as Mayura. But Pavona was a poor fighter and even worse strategist. Her sentimonsters were easier to fight than Mayura's, and her outfit- while fancy- was a piece of cake to grab onto, either to yank her backward (or sideways) out of an attack or to fling her several blocks away, away from the fight and out of their hair for several minutes while the supervillain picked herself back up and straightened her outfit out.
(The Ladyblog had had an absolute field day with how ridiculous and ill-suited for fighting Pavona's outfit was. Marinette had worried that it would make Pavona reconsider her transformation and choose something more practical, but either the supervillain was unaware of the Ladyblog or was just so generally inept that she wasn't willing to sacrifice fashion for practicality.)
In most cases, Marinette would have assumed that Pavona had stolen the Miraculous from Mayura, and that was the reason for the change. But it was obvious that Pavona wouldn't have been able to overpower Mayura to start with, and Hawkmoth had clearly been anticipating the change. Right now, her assumption was that something had happened to Mayura- maybe she had died in an accident or something, she didn't know- and Pavona was Hawkmoth's only choice for an ally.
To be honest, Marinette was of the opinion that Hawkmoth would have been better off fighting on his own. Pavona only seemed to get in the way, and then she had to be saved before the superheroes could grab for her Miraculous. Pavona hadn't come out on the battlefield again after one particularly idiotic blunder, but considering that Mayura hadn't returned and the Peacock's sentimonsters were still showing up, it was more than likely that Pavona was just sulking in a lair somewhere for a bit before trying battlefield fighting again.
And now, after weeks- no, months- of Hawkmoth going after the superheroes with increased ferocity, the attacks had suddenly stopped. There had been nothing for the past four days.
Not that Marinette was complaining! Being able to attend school without having to dash out was really nice. It was just odd, that was all.
"Oh, Lila's looking like she might be finally getting better! I'm glad, she was looking so ill at the end of last week!"
Marinette blinked, pulling herself out of her thoughts and glancing over at Alya. "Hm?"
Alya nodded towards the front of the classroom, where Lila was straggling across the front of the classroom. "Lila caught a cold or something last week and she was so exhausted. She couldn't rest very well, since she's been pushing herself to get all of this work for her charities done before this deadline and there's been, like, so many emergencies that she's had to deal with all in a row. We've all been trying to help out so she won't get behind, but she's really been struggling. So I'm glad that she's feeling at least a little better now!"
For once, it was easy not to sigh in exasperation. Instead, Marinette frowned, glancing towards Lila as she headed for the back of the classroom.
The charities were a lie, of course. They always had been and always would be. Lila was too selfish and self-centered to even think about spending her time and money helping others. But the lie definitely got Lila a lot of (undeserved) admiration and offers for help. Mysteriously, Lila could never use the help with the charity directly- Marinette hadn't bothered to hear her excuses for that- but she could use the help when it came to things like homework. Normally, Marinette would assume that Lila had just wanted her classmates to offer to do all of her homework because she felt a little under the weather.
This time, though, Marinette had noticed that Lila seemed a bit under the weather, and it hadn't seemed faked. In fact, it had been pretty obvious once she looked a little closer that Lila had applied makeup to hide how bad she was feeling. And that was strange.
Sure, Lila seemed to have made a little bit of a recovery, but Marinette couldn't help but feel a bit curious about the whole situation. Downplaying her troubles wasn't Lila's style at all, and Marinette had to wonder what was going on. Because something had to be going on, unless Lila had gotten a personality transplant overnight.
(Considering that she was still lying about her charity work, Marinette doubted that.)
"I wonder if there's something going around," Adrien commented quietly to Marinette as Alya and Nino broke off into their own little conversation. "Nathalie was sick a couple weeks ago, and I've never seen her so drained. She's been getting better, but she still gets these little relapses sometimes." He glanced towards the back of the classroom, his brow furrowed. "Maybe Lila picked it up at one of the photoshoots or something."
"I hope it doesn't spread, then," Marinette said. She chanced a glance back at Lila, who was clearly half-heartedly engaging in conversation with a few of their classmates. "Being tired and miserable for over a week sounds miserable."
Miserable, and not very safe. Marinette had had to be Ladybug when she had a bit of a cold more than one time, with a stuffed nose and a sore throat, and that had been bad enough. It hadn't affected her fighting that much, she thought, but combine that with how being tired during late night and early-morning fights affected her...
"She probably shouldn't have been coming to school," Adrien added after a moment. "It's a bit odd that most of the time she's so eager to skip, but the one time when she actually has a legitimate excuse to stay home, she doesn't."
Marinette nodded, glancing backwards again. "Yeah, I was thinking the same thing."
Tumblr media
The lack of akumas continued for the rest of the week, and Marinette got to get caught up with- well, everything- for the first time in ages. She worried that Hawkmoth was planning something, of course, but there wasn't really much that she and Chat Noir could do about it besides patrolling every evening in search of trouble.
Well, patrolling and going over what little information they had about the Miraculous powers and potions, comparing notes about what Master Fu had taught them. Thankfully she had gotten copies of pretty much all of Master Fu's translations before he was caught, but she hadn't had the chance to go through all of them and truly figure out the extent of the information at her fingertips. She and Chat Noir had been finding hidden crannies- ones where they wouldn't get spotted and where they couldn't be overheard or snuck up on- and going over the notes, puzzling over cryptic clues and tossing ideas for interpretations back and forth. Maybe it was a nice change of pace from battling akumas (and it was definitely something that they had to do anyway), but it was also difficult and frustrating and slow-going. Things had to be interpreted and then sorted into some semblance of order so that they would be able to find the notes again when they needed them.
So by the time Saturday rolled around, marking a full week without the barest whisper of an akuma, Marinette was more than happy to set her schoolwork and the Miraculous notes aside (the latter locked up in a box that was both secure and hidden), bake a batch of cookies, and package them up with some rejected pastries from the bakery to bring to their class picnic at the park. It sounded like a great opportunity to relax and focus on something else for a change.
Their classmates trickled in, coming in pairs and trios, laden with food. Thankfully it looked like people had brought dishes instead of just treats this time, so they would have a proper meal instead of just sugar, sugar, and more sugar. It was a far cry from their first class picnic, where almost all of them ended up feeling a bit ill from the number of sweets that they had eaten.
Rose, bless her, had even brought salad. She had put in a fair amount of work, clearly, tossing in more veggies and croutons and bringing a container of homemade dressing to make it more interesting.
Everyone milled around, talking and relaxing in the warm sun. Marinette wandered between her classmates, chatting with pretty much everyone before gradually circling back around to hang with Alya, Nino, and Adrien again. Maybe she got to hang out with them most often, just by virtue of where they sat in class, but they were also her best friends. They could talk for forever about nothing in particular, and it was nice to have that.
Ten minutes after the bulk of their class had arrived, Lila finally showed up. And in typical Lila fashion, of course she had to make her entrance loud.
"Oh my god, you guys, you'll never guess what my mom did for me! It was so sweet of her!"
"Oh, what now?" Marinette grumbled as people started to flock towards Lila as though they were being drawn by a magnet. "Can't we go one day without her making up some ridiculous story to tell?"
"I'll go listen in," Adrien volunteered, placing one hand on her shoulder. "Just to see what she's up to. If you want to, uh..."
"I'll go organize things on the picnic table so that I don't have to listen to her," Marinette offered, picking up what he was going to say. It was obvious to anyone with eyes (and critical thinking skills) that listening to Lila blather on made Marinette's blood pressure rocket up. "And then, uh, do some cloud-watching?"
Adrien snorted. "Honestly, that sounds way more appealing than listening to Lila. Anything is, really, but..." He glanced towards the growing group around Lila. "I'd rather not have to hear about what Lila was saying and showing off secondhand, not when everyone believes everything she says."
Before Marinette could agree, Adrien had darted off, lingering on the edges of the group. He blended in pretty naturally, clearly going for a 'just-here-because-Nino-is' look and succeeding fairly well. Before anyone could notice that she wasn't joining the rest of the group, Marinette wandered off to rearrange the table and make it not quite so chaotic. Since Lila seemed to be settling in for a long story-telling session, Marinette took her sweet time in surveying everything that people had brought (Lila, she couldn't help but notice, had opted not to contribute) and figuring out the best way to arrange them. Shapes of containers had to be taken into consideration, of course, and then similar things- the salads, the chips- could be put together.
It made the table much neater and meant that nothing was in danger of falling off anymore.
Lila was still going strong with her stories, so Marinette turned her attention skyward for all of a minute (cloud-watching, it turned out, was not particularly interesting for an extended period of time) and then down to her phone. Finally, finally, Lila stopped talking and everyone broke up into their little friend groups. Marinette headed over to Adrien's side at once, something that was made much easier by the fact that Alya and Nino were still talking to Lila.
"So what's the latest nonsense?"
Adrien startled for a moment, then relaxed once he realized that it was Marinette next to him. "Oh, gosh. I don't know how, but Lila's come up with pictures to go along with her stories. She has selfies with Jagged Stone, Clara Nightingale, Prince Ali, Ladybug..."
"She- what?" For once, Marinette was caught completely off guard. "She has photos? But none of those stories are true!"
"My guess is Photoshop. That, or she wanted to go low-tech, posters and life-sized print-outs." Adrien made a face, glancing around as he did to make sure that they weren't being overheard. "I don't know why she went all-in like that all of a sudden. Like, it didn't seem as though people were believing her any less than they were when she first showed up."
"Maybe she just wanted to head off that possibility before anyone caught on." Which was annoying, really. Marinette had just been about ready to try for another round of pointing out inconsistencies in Lila's stories to Alya, abet a more subtle round, and now that Lila had "evidence" to back up her claims...
Well, that made things a lot more difficult. She would have to abandon subtlety altogether and do something much more direct, like calling up Jagged Stone and having him come in or somehow approaching Lila as Ladybug when Alya was nearby and calling her out for the Photoshop.
She really should have just nipped the entire problem in the bud when Lila first showed up and gone to Alya's apartment to ask about the video of her "best friend" on the same day that it was posted, but it was a little too late to do that now.
"It makes me wonder if she's setting up to do something bigger," Adrien murmured, keeping his voice low. Maybe none of their classmates were lingering close by, but they didn't want to be overheard. "Then she would want to have a solid base. If she validates all of her previous lies, then she can tell a bigger one and not run as big of a risk of people doubting her."
Marinette nodded. Yeah, she was afraid of that, too. She also wouldn't be surprised if Lila decided to make up something about her to get rid of the dissenting voice for once and for all. If she tried, though, Marinette was ready.
There was a lock on her school bag, and another on her locker. Tikki had been told to keep an eye out and to destroy anything that Lila tried to plant. Marinette had even bought a recorder, in case she ever found herself alone with Lila and no witnesses again.
Of course, Lila might very well decide to take the approach of making Marinette look like the bad guy by bringing attention to the fact that she didn't believe any of Lila's stories, and then try to alienate her friends that way. Marinette wouldn't let that happen- she'd just use her connections to discredit Lila if it got that bad- but it wouldn't be particularly pleasant, either.
"Maybe she wants to skip again and the teachers are starting to doubt her," Marinette suggested, keeping her voice just as quiet as Adrien's. "So she's going more indirect this time by showing off her pictures to classmates but not the teacher- except no, it would make more sense than to show the photos off at school. Then she wouldn't have to depend on the teachers overhearing classmates just happening to mention the photos."
"True. Which suggests that whatever she's planning, it's more important that our classmates all believe her." Adrien sighed. "I miss the days before Lila showed up. I didn't feel like I had to keep an ear open to what was going on and what was being talked about all the time."
Marinette nodded. Yeah, things had been a lot more simple before Lila returned. Maybe she still had to deal with Chloe's nonsense, but at least Chloe hadn't been trying to frame her for things, just make her life difficult in typical bully fashion.
"I guess we'll find out what she's up to soon enough," Marinette said with a sigh. She wasn't looking forward to it. "I almost wish I could see the photos without Lila there. I bet there's something off about them that I'd be able to point out, but she's hardly going to hand over her phone and let me pick them apart."
Adrien perked up. "Oh! Lila sent her Ladybug photos to Alya to post on the Ladyblog. Maybe it's not all of the photos, but you could at least look over those ones."
Marinette grinned. That was a start, at least. Of course, she would have to be really careful when bringing up any problems with the photos because otherwise she wouldn't even get her friends to actually look at the issue before they jumped down her throat about how she was being so mean doubting poor Lila, but maybe she could pose any concerns as a question or something.
"Hey, Marinette, come check this out!"
"I'll wait here and if Nino and Alya got anything more out of Lila once they finish chatting with her," Adrien said when Marinette hesitated to respond, not fully willing to give up their discussion so early. He nudged her towards Max. "There'll be plenty of time to try to figure out what Lila's up to later."
Marinette nodded, stepping away from Adrien and heading across the grass towards Max. He was grinning, looking eager about something.
"I would love some feedback on some of my proposed designs for the akuma villains that I'll be rolling out as part of my upcoming game update," Max told Marinette as she drew closer. He pulled a folder out of his bag and opened it, pulling out a sheath of papers. "Both the villain costume design and the powers, really. I want to make them a bit less, ah, one-dimensional, I suppose. Less predictable. I had some ideas, but would definitely be open to any improvements before I code them all in."
Marinette perked up. Oh, that sounded interesting, and something that sounded loads more interesting than discussing Lila and her nonsense. "Sure! How many akumas are you thinking of adding?"
"I thought ten to fifteen in the next release, then maybe do regular releases after that on a more regular basis with five or so akumas per release, just to keep things fresh." Max adjusted his glasses, angling the paper stack so that Marinette could see the top design. "Of course, how long I can do that for depends on Hawkmoth making new akumas and not simply recycling powers over and over, but at the moment I have quite a list of supervillains that I could use."
"That sounds like a lot of work, but very cool," Marinette told him, accepting the top paper. She scanned the design, grinning when she noticed how well Max had done at getting the details right. "This is so cool! Was it hard getting all of the details?"
"Nathaniel assisted with the character modeling," Max told her, shuffling around so he could stand next to her and see the page as well. "Which really helped bring the characters to life."
"It's really fantastic!" Marinette glanced through the next few papers, impressed. It was a real step up from Max's original character designs, which had been detailed enough for people to be able to identify the characters but nowhere near this quality. He had focused less on the design and more on the coding for the actual play. "Have the old characters gotten the same design upgrade?"
"Yes, that was what the last update was. I wanted to make sure that everything was perfect and there wouldn't be any mismatch between the old characters and the new ones." Max shuffled a step closer. "So, what do you think about this character?"

Ten minutes of character review later, Marinette left Max scribbling down notes in the margins of his character pages and headed back across the park to where her friends were hanging out. Halfway there, she was stopped in her tracks by the sound of Lila's voice, loud and pointed and annoying.
"You missed out on seeing my pictures earlier," Lila said loudly, smugness coming across loud and clear in her voice. "Which is a pity, really. There were some really nice ones that my mom recovered off of my old phone. If you wanted, I could still show you a couple."
Marinette snorted at that. As if. "So you've taken up Photoshop as a hobby, I take it?" she asked, thoroughly unimpressed. "And I think I'll pass on looking at the photos. If I wanted to see something that wasn't real, I'd go watch an action hero movie. That would at least be enjoyable."
"You're just so certain that they're doctored," Lila sniffed, still insufferably smug. "Do you know how jealous that makes you sound? It's not a very attractive look on you at all."
Marinette had to roll her eyes at that. Jealous? Why on earth would she be jealous of Lila? "Puh-leeze. There was a photo of me and Jagged Stone on the cover of Metal Lord not even a year ago, and I've got actual selfies of me and Clara Nightingale on my phone from when she was doing her music video. I don't need Photoshop. Some of us actually have the connections that you pretend to have. If anyone is jealous, it's you."
With that, she turned on her heel and left before Lila could say anything else, continuing her journey towards Alya and Nino and Adrien. Alya was busily tapping away on her phone, clearly in Ladyblog article mode.
She would probably have the photos and whatever article she was writing up done by the evening and posted with the photos, and then Marinette could look at them. With any luck, there would be something obvious wrong with them, and maybe- maybe she could post under an anonymous name and bring up the fact that the photos were clearly faked then?
"Max sure looks serious about something," Adrien commented as Marinette returned, settling down on the grass between him and Alya. "I don't know anyone else who would bring a file folder to a picnic- well, anyone else our age, at least."
"He's gearing up to start work on a new release for his video game," Marinette told him. She was really excited to see it, actually. Hopefully she would actually have the time to play. "Or, well, he's started work, but he wanted to get some input on how to make it better. He has twenty new akumas lined up to create, and they all look fantastic!"
Adrien perked up. "Oh, cool! I saw that the graphics took a huge leap forward with the last release, which was really nice. Before, it was very, ah..." He tipped his head to one side, considering. "Very early-game-y? But now the graphics match the coding, which is nice. I know there was a huge spike in interest once that upgrade came through."
"As there should be!" There had been several akuma-and-superhero-themed games that had come out since she and Chat Noir hit the scene, but in Marinette's (completely unbiased) opinion, Max's was one of the best. "We were talking about the powers that the akumas get and how he's working on making them a little more realistic and less predictable. Thankfully he doesn't have to puzzle it out through trial and error for each akuma. Or, well, at least he really only had to do a bunch of puzzling for the first one, and then each one after that only needs a few small tweaks here and there."
"I can't wait for that to come out. Did Max say when he's expecting to have that ready to roll out?"
Marinette shook her head. She had asked too, but Max had said that there were way too many variables to promise anything yet. "I think he's still early on enough in the process that it's impossible to predict. Everything could go really smoothly..."
"...or the code could tie itself into knots and take weeks to find the issue," Adrien finished. "Ah, I suppose I could be patient."
"I wonder if Max would be interested in giving out some preview pictures before everything is ready to go," Nino chimed in. "I know Alya's mentioned his game on the Ladyblog before, but it never hurts to drum up some more interest. Right, babe?"
He got a vague grunt in response.
"Babe?"
"I think she's a bit focused at the moment," Adrien said with a laugh when Alya didn't respond again. "We'll bug her later. I think Max's game is a pretty cool thing to put on the Ladyblog."
"Though not as cool as Lila!" Nino exclaimed. "I mean, I guess her friendship with Ladybug is old news now, but Ladybug doesn't pose with civilians that often, not unless there's an event or something. And the pictures- Marinette, you missed that! Lila's mom got a specialist to recover a bunch of her photos from off of her old phone that got destroyed, and she was showing everyone. It was cool to get to see the inside of Prince Ali's palace! Like, there weren't a ton of pictures of the inside, just what we could see in the background of her photos with him, but still!"
"Hm," Marinette said, completely noncommittal. "Pity. I had to make sure that none of the food was going to fall off of the picnic table. It kind of looked like Kim might have arranged it last- there was a really precarious pile of stuff. One pan was hanging halfway off of the table and the only reason why it hadn't fallen yet was because something else was piled on top of the portion that was actually on the table."
Adrien laughed. "That sounds like Kim. And yet there was plenty of space on the table, it seems? Nothing is about to fall off now."
"Yeah, it was just that dishes were piled every which way and there were a lot of oddly-shaped gaps between..." Marinette trailed off, squinting across the park. Lila was headed towards Rose and Max and Juleka, but something seemed... off. She didn't seem entirely steady on her feet for a moment, half-stumbling before catching herself and continuing.
Huh. Was Lila still sick? She had seemed mostly fine at school on Friday, and for most of the rest of the week, too. Marinette would have guessed that Lila was just trying to get attention again, except that stumble was...muted. Almost like Lila was trying to hide it.
...maybe she just didn't want to take attention away from her faked photos? The attention from that was sure to be better than any attention that she could get from being sick, even if Lila had clearly enjoyed the attention that she had gotten during her- what? One, two, maybe three weeks of being sick?
That... that was a long time to be sick.
Marinette kept watching Lila as she sat down, almost immediately joining in the conversation. She seemed fine now, but Marinette was positive that she hadn't imagined that stumble.
"-lots of tasty dishes," Nino was saying, though Marinette had largely tuned him out. "A lot of things that I want to try. The pastries you brought look great- and did you see the quiches that Juleka brought? I heard she made them herself!"
He didn't get a response. Marinette was too busy watching Lila.
She had the feeling that something was off, and she didn't want to let her guard down until she figured out what.
Hawkmoth had been quiet lately. Lila had gotten photos that were either photoshopped or had been made in some other way. Maybe it was a stretch to say that the two were related, but there was a niggling feeling in Marinette's gut that there was some sort of connection.
Marinette had long since learned that her gut was usually not a great thing to ignore. If she sensed that something was wrong, she needed to investigate. Just sitting back and waiting for things to resolve themselves or for problems to show up wasn't enough, not anymore.
"You guys? The quiches?"
Marinette startled, pulling her gaze away from Lila and back towards Nino. Right. Investigating was important, but so was not being obvious about it. If Lila caught her staring, or one of her other classmates did, then Lila would no doubt go out of her way to be even more sneaky about whatever it was that she was up to.
That was fine. Marinette could hold a conversation and watch Lila unobtrusively at the same time. So she did. And what she noticed...
Well, Lila was definitely still sick. She had looked positively green as she picked up food from the table (following what might have been either an attempt to make people feel like they had to rush to assure her that she could take all the food she wanted or a stab at getting out of eating that backfired spectacularly- Marinette suspected that it was meant to be the latter) and not entirely steady on her feet as she headed back to the bench that she had been sitting on. She hadn't eaten until one of the other girls commented on it, instead just pushing her food around her plate, and, if Marinette's eyes were serving her correctly, Lila seemed to occasionally be swaying in place. Which... wasn't normal.
If it weren't for the faked photos, Marinette would say that Lila was just ill and wasn't up to- well, wasn't up to being up to something. But clearly she had had enough energy to put in the work to create the photos.
Unless- well, there was a possibility that Lila had been working on those photos gradually, over the course of several weeks, and just finished them recently. Several weeks of Photoshop work logically made more sense than a day or two, unless Hawkmoth was involved. Somehow.
...it wasn't a completely illogical thought, right? She was pretty sure that Lila had worked willingly with Hawkmoth before. She had been Akumatized and looked just like normal, at least for a bit. So it wasn't impossible.
...but then how did the cold fit in? And why on earth would Hawkmoth bother giving someone photoshopping powers?
Across the way, Lila swayed in her seat again. She was looking rather pale now, and Marinette wondered why she hadn't just gone home. It would have been easy enough for Lila to claim that she had just gotten an email requesting an urgent Skype meeting about pollution or something and then she could have left.
"Just like Mom and Nathalie," Adrien murmured, pulling her out of her thoughts. "That's so strange."
"Hmm?" Marinette blinked over at him, puzzled. "Who is?"
"Lila." Adrien tipped his head towards Lila, who was pushing herself to her feet to follow Rose. "I think I might have mentioned it once before. Nathalie was really ill just like Lila. She was all tired and ill and dizzy for the longest time before she started getting better, and then there were sometimes off days where she seemed just as sick as she had been before. Mom was like that too before she vanished. And I've never heard of a cold before that acted like that."
"Me either." Not that there weren't illnesses that behaved that way. They just weren't colds. Not an average, run-of-the-mill cold, anyway. "Nathalie got better though, right? So if Lila caught whatever she had- oh my god!"
Across the park, Lila had stumbled and then simply collapsed, hitting the ground hard enough- and in an awkward enough position- that it was pretty obvious that it was 100% not at all faked.
"LILA!" Rose shrieked, dashing back to her side. "Oh my god, can you hear me? Are you okay? What- what do we do?"
"Rose, take a deep breath," Marinette called, already shoving herself to her feet. She had gotten first aid training several months prior, just in case she ever needed it as Ladybug, and- well, she was pretty positive that she was the only one in the class with the training, which meant that she needed to take charge. No matter how much she disliked Lila- or how suspicious she was that Lila was up to something- she had to do the right thing. "Juleka, help Rose roll Lila onto her back so that she isn't all crumpled up like that. Alya, call for an ambulance."
"On it!"
Marinette dashed over as Rose and Juleka got Lila into a more comfortable position on the ground. Lila's skin was white as a sheet against her hair, so far beyond pale that it was really concerning.
At least she was breathing. Marinette could tell as much as she skidded to a stop by Lila's side.
Rose was practically in tears. "Is she going to be okay?"
"She's breathing, so she should be fine." As long as she kept breathing, at least. Marinette quickly scanned through her memories of what she had learned in her first aid class. Lila had been acting ill before, so they didn't need to worry about environmental threats to them, too. That also pretty much ruled out choking, and the fact that Lila hadn't been coughing or clutching at her throat (or eating) before confirmed that. She had just passed out, so watching after her while they waited for an ambulance to arrive should be pretty easy.
Now, as far as things that they could do went...
"We want to encourage blood flow to the head, since Lila fainted," Marinette told everyone, keeping a close eye on the slow rise and fall of Lila's chest. "If someone could find something to prop Lila's feet up a bit, that should help. And then I'm just going to make sure that her clothes aren't too tight, because tight clothes restrict blood flow."
Several people darted off to grab their backpacks or bags to prop Lila's feet up. Marinette watched them go for a moment, then turned her attention back to Lila.
Right. What she was meant to do if Lila's clothes were tight, Marinette wasn't sure, but if she could figure out how to defeat an akuma with a traffic cone, she was pretty positive that she could puzzle out how to help Lila.
Methodically, Marinette worked over Lila's body, scanning for anything that might be in need of loosening, pausing briefly partway through to help Nino prop up Lila's feet slightly before going back to her scan. Nothing in particular was sticking out, except for maybe Lila's scarf. Even that was pretty loose, though, not something that would be cutting off any blood or air.
Maybe she should still be removing it? That would probably be a good idea.
"Marinette," Tikki hissed suddenly from Marinette's collar. "I'm sensing something really odd near Lila's neck. Can you take off her scarf? I just- I want to check something out."
Marinette nodded as subtly as she could, not wanting to attract any attention from her audience, then carefully removed Lila's scarf. There was something hard hidden in the folds, and a quick glance down at Tikki confirmed that whatever it was that she had sensed was on the scarf itself.
Had- had she been right? Was Lila actually akumatized and Tikki had detected the akumatized object? Maybe she had been akumatized all week, and that was why she had seemed better. Then the sickness had gotten too much and gotten through the boost that the akuma gave.
Which... well, that made Marinette wonder just how sick Lila was if it was able to force its way through the boost that an akumatization usually gave.
Also, speaking of which, she had to get away soon, then, and purify the akuma before it peeled itself out of whatever was in the scarf. But she couldn't just step away from Lila unnoticed, not when she was the only one of her classmates who was trained in first aid. She would have to wait until the professionals arrived- and even then, she would probably have to brief them on what she had seen and done, even if she had seen the same thing as most of her classmates and hadn't really done much in terms of care.
...maybe she would get lucky and the cursed butterfly would stay in the brooch or whatever it was in the scarf until after Lila was turned over into far more capable hands. It was a long shot, but not completely impossible.
Maybe. Hopefully.
"Here comes the ambulance!" Nathaniel called from the corner of the park. He rushed back towards them. "Clear a path, clear a path!"
The next few minutes were a blur as everyone scrambled out of the way of the path and grabbed up stray bags, making way for the paramedics. They surrounded Lila, taking her vitals and moving her onto a stretcher when she didn't respond. There were questions to answer about what they had seen and what they had done and then Lila was being wheeled away towards the ambulance. The class swarmed towards the curb, watching the ambulance pull away anxiously, but Marinette held back. With everyone else's attention off of her, she glanced down at the scarf in her hands. No corrupted butterflies had fluttered free yet, so Marinette carefully unfolded the scarf to see what was inside.
The folds fell away, tumbling to the side, and the pin inside was exposed. It glinted brightly in the sun, and Marinette gasped.
Because that was no akumatized brooch. That was the Peacock Miraculous.

Restorative Justice - Chapter 2 - Preparation
Summary: Chloé has never been a fan of Ms. Bustier’s community building activities. In fact, she detests them. She doesn’t want to learn about the drab boring lives of her peers. And she absolutely can’t stand it when their confessions make her feel things. Feelings that she doesn’t even have names for. But when Adrien unknowingly shares his struggles with his double life, Chloé vows she will do anything to get Ladybug set things right. Even if it means pissing off the heroine. Chloé was already mad at her anyway.
Chapter 1 - Community Circle
Chapter 2 - Preparation
Two weeks had gone by and Chloé had made absolutely zero progress in her self-assigned secret mission, though it wasn’t for lack of trying. She had spent hours on the roof of the hotel with the bee signal trained towards the sky both during, and not during, akuma attacks hoping Ladybug would give her the time of day. Chloé wasn’t sure what she was going to say exactly, but she figured Ladybug needed to know that she was going to lose her partner if she kept echoing the way his father treated him. It hadn’t mattered, because Ladybug never came. When the spotted heroine hadn’t shown up over the course of several days, Chloé staged a loud conversation with Sabrina during class about how she wasn’t even going to ask for the Bee Miraculous (though of course Ladybug would be better off with Chloé on her team). She just needed to give Ladybug some valuable intel. But Ladybug still hadn’t shown. And neither had Chat Noir. Which stung more than a little bit. Adrien had heard the conversation as well. And supposedly, he still considered her a friend. At least, that’s what he said when she asked if he was mad at her for something. He had seemed genuinely confused at the question. But it wasn’t like she could follow up with a “Then why didn’t Chat Noir show up on my hotel roof when I asked him to?” She supposed that neither of the heroes truly believed she had anything valuable to share with them. God! She wanted to tear her hair from her scalp in frustration. They were both so dumb!

When contacting them as superheros failed, she figured that she would try their civilian personas. Chloé had taken two steps toward Marinette one morning in the courtyard when the girl was there early for once before promptly changing her mind. Marinette was never ever going to hear her out. As Ladybug, the girl had to at least pretend to be neutral toward Chloé. But as Marinette? Absolutely no way! Really, Chloé didn’t need them to talk to her anyway. She just needed them to talk to each other with complete honesty. But as long as they didn’t know who the other was they couldn’t be that honest. What if she just sent them anonymous notes in their lockers or something? It wouldn’t even have to be long! Adrien Agreste is Chat Noir. Ladybug is Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Boom! Done! End of story. Chloé had seriously contemplated it. She had the notes written out and everything. She was just waiting for the opportune moment to slip them into said lockers. But then the whole ‘Lila planting evidence in Marinette’s locker’ thing happened. Clearly, lockers were not secure enough. Chloé had shredded the notes. And unfortunately, the blonde was back to trying to talk to Marinette. Chloé had found her alone at a table in the library during a study period. Marinette had five books sprawled out around her as she frantically scribbled on a piece of paper. Chloé stood in front of the table expectantly. Marinette didn’t even look up. Chloé cleared her throat dramatically, which only earned her a sparing glance before Marinette’s attention was back on her reference book. The blonde thought about just asking if they could talk for a minute, like a normal person, but this was Marinette. And well, Chloé had never been reasonable with Marinette. Especially not when Marinette was ignoring her. So instead, Chloé went and collected two volumes of an encyclopedia before returning to Marinette’s table. She then dropped the books unceremoniously from as high as she could comfortably reach. The heavy blue volumes hit the table with an explosion of sound. Marinette jumped twenty centimeters from her seat, her gaze shooting up in indignant frustration. “Chloé!” she shrieked. “What the hell?” “You were ignoring me,” Chloé observed. Marinette sighed, rapidly moving to collect her belongings. “I seriously don’t have time for this today. Can’t you just disappear until tomorrow or something?” “You need to listen to me!” Chloé insisted. Marinette stacked up her reference books into a neat pile. “I don’t need to do anything of the sort,” Marinette told her before stuffing the last of her work back into her backpack, and leaving the blonde alone at the table. In the library. With dusty books. Ugh.   Really, Chloé needed to just lock them in a closet together or something! Surely, Sabrina could come up with some scheme to get them in a room with no windows and a locked door. Surely, the hotel had some storage closet somewhere that they could use. Or maybe something at school would work better.  Sabrina was amazing at getting people to do as she wanted. And God, that had come in handy on occasion. Adrien wouldn’t be hard. He might even listen to Chloé, but she’d need Sabrina for Marinette. Only Sabrina could still trick Marinette. It wouldn’t really work though. Marinette would probably love the forced alone time with Adrien. And they were both so stubborn. They’d never reveal their identities just to get out of a locked room. Her fingernails clicked on the desk in rapid succession like a series of grace notes. They wouldn’t reveal their identities for their own convenience, sure. But if someone else needed Ladybug and Chat Noir? So, Chloé would just have to lock them in a room together and then inspire an akuma. It wouldn’t be that hard, would it? And creating an atmosphere for an akuma shouldn’t be that challenging either, should it? Like, she had done it by accident how many times now? How very heroic. She quickly realized it couldn’t work anyway. For them to know about an akuma, they’d have to have their phones, but if they had their phones, what would stop them from contacting Adrien’s bodyguard or Alya and Nino to get out of the room? She had tried to approach Adrien directly, too. She only had the five or so minutes before he had to be in his limo after their last class, being shipped off to whatever lesson he had going on that day.   “It’s been a long time since we talked, Adri-kins,” she told him. “We should set up a lunch date to catch up.” He smiled at her. “My schedule is really packed this week, Chloé. Maybe have your people call my people to set something up later in the month?” he said lightly, as he brought his fencing bag to his shoulder.   The brush off hurt more than a little bit. But of course he would want to spend every scrap of free time with his close friends. Which was a very short list, and she was clearly no longer on it. Maybe this whole idea wasn’t worth it in the first place. Like, why was she trying so hard to help Adrien when he barely gave her any of his time or attention anymore? “But maybe I have something important and urgent to talk to you about,” she admitted. He tensed, his green eyes giving a cursory glance over her whole form. “Is something wrong?” He reached out a hand to her shoulder. “Has your mother…?” She waved away his physical comfort. “My mother is in New York!” she snapped impatiently. “She hasn’t spoken to me in weeks.” Which meant she couldn’t have said anything hurtful to tear Chloé to pieces. She had no reason to be upset. None at all. But his frown only deepened, and he stepped forward again. And that’s when she realized he probably would make time for her if she asked. The idiot. “It’s nothing about any of that. I’m fine. I’m worried about you,” she insisted emphatically. And with those words he pulled away, and closed himself off immediately. “I’m fine, Chloé,” he told her with that stupid pasted on fake smile. “What could I possibly have to complain about?” he asked her before walking to the door and waving farewell. She had wanted to run after him so she could scream at him. That had been three days ago. She furiously wiped away the tears that were sliding down her cheeks. Why couldn’t she help him? Why wouldn’t he let her? He was growing more withdrawn by the day! Not that anyone other than her seemed to notice. Which she couldn’t understand! It was so obvious! When he had first come to school, he had been an excited puppy anytime anyone included him in a conversation or invited him to some social outing. Chloé had assumed that the novelty of school and peers would eventually wear off, but a solid year later, it hadn’t. He was still an excited puppy with any scrap of affection. Or he had been until recently. Adrien had been far less animated for the past week. He still smiled and said all the right things when people engaged with him, but it wasn’t real. He was going through the motions. Pulling out the politeness and the charm that had been drilled into him as a child that grew up in the spotlight. And normally, Chloé could have dismissed the change in behavior as a sign of fatigue. The akumas recently had been constant and brutal, and Gabriel showed no signs of easing up on Adrien’s commitments or expectations. But it was more than that because he hadn’t transformed gradually over time as his responsibilities built up. No, he had changed from puppy Adrien to polite Adrien in the span of a few minutes. From sunshine-child to creature-of-the-night literally instantaneously. Chloé had been in class sitting next to Sabrina as always, working on their project. Or well, letting Sabrina take notes on their project, but whatever. Ayla and Marinette sat in their usual seats with their heads together with Nino sitting a few feet away occasionally laughing or shaking his head at whatever nonsense they were saying. Then Adrien had arrived late to class from a photoshoot of something. “What are you guys talking about,” he had asked as he took his seat next to Nino. “N-nothing!” Marinette had stammered, her face turning tomato-red. Nino rolled his eyes again. “Don’t worry about it, dude. Girls are crazy.” And Chloé had watched Adrien’s shoulders stiffen. And his eyes go flat. And of course there was that stupid polite smile in place. He was upset. He was upset that they his friends were keeping things from him. And of course the other three keeping secrets from him would drive a wedge into his soul. How could they not know that? Chloé didn’t care that they were doing it to protect whatever was left of Marinette’s dignity. Chloé didn’t care about Marinette’s dignity at all. They were hurting him. Making him think they didn’t trust him either. Just like his father. Just like Ladybug. And since that day, he had stopped initiating conversations. He didn’t talk about his favorite video games, or whatever anime he had binged that past weekend. He didn’t light up like a supernova when Nino asked him to come to a party or the girls invited him out to ice cream. And worse, he wasn’t accepting their invitations. He was making excuses for why he couldn’t even try. Not even real excuses like whatever stupid lessons his father had him taking, but fake ones about being tired or needing to study. As if! Adrien didn’t really need to study. He was one of those obnoxiously intelligent kids who just absorbed academic knowledge through osmosis or whatever. And even if he needed to study, (which Chloé still doubted), he wouldn’t miss out on time with his friends to do it. He would just stay up all night instead. But he was declining invitations and she guessed everyone was just so accustomed to him not being able to come, that they didn’t notice he had stopped trying. And the second his friends’ eyes were off him, he would wilt like a plant without water. And his so-called friends didn’t notice that either! Not even Nino. But Chloé noticed.
And she didn’t like it. And as loathe as Chloé was to admit it, Marinette wasn’t faring any better. She was probably worse actually. The part-time superheroine had bags under eyes, and she was constantly falling asleep in class only to wake up screaming in pure terror. Chloé did not want to know what those nightmares were about. Then, the civilian side of Paris’s savior and super heroine had randomly burst into tears at least twice in the last three days, and refused to explain to anyone - even Alya - what was upsetting her. But that didn’t mean Chloé had to help her. Marinette had made it clear that she didn’t want Chloé’s help, which was just fine because the feeling was completely and thoroughly mutual. Marinette had always acted like she was some great authority on moral goodness. But Chloé knew Marinette was selfish, too. Marinette neglected responsibilities for her own gain, she lied more frequently than anyone realized, and she pushed her way into situations that were none of her business thinking she knew better than everyone, often making everything worse! Marinette always assumed the worst of Chloé even when she legitimately was trying to help. Which is likely why Ladybug had always assumed the worst of Chloé even in the very beginning when Chloé had tried to help her locate Vanisher’s akuma. Why Ladybug had been so insistent on seeing the worst in Queen Bee even right after she had helped Ladybug and Chat Noir rescue that runaway speed train. The heroine hadn’t been wrong in that instance, but that was hardly the point! But then, something had changed when her father had been akumatized the first time. And the spotted heroine Chloé had so admired offered her compassion, a shoulder to cry on, and a second chance. Told her she wasn’t useless and could become a hero if she wanted to be. Had invited her, Chloé, to race across rooftops and serve as her partner against a vicious akuma, when Chat Noir had been mentally transformed into an actual cat. And for the first time in a long time, Chloé had had hope that she could become something… better. Something… worthwhile. No matter what her mother said, or her classmates thought of her - she could be a hero. Someone others trusted without question, someone people respected, looked up to, and emulated. Chloé didn’t know how to be that person, but she knew that she wanted it. And that she was willing to try. But then a few weeks later, Paris’s heroine had taken it all back. Even after Chloé fought against Hawkmoth with her. Even though Chloé hadn’t done anything differently. Even though she had tried to find others ways to build herself up instead of tear others down by making collages of selfies and videos dressed up as Ladybug rather than targeting others. None of it had mattered. Ladybug had just stopped coming to her with the miraculous. And then, right after Chloé had managed to fight off an akuma all on her own, Ladybug had shown up and said she’d never get the miraculous again because people knew who she was? It was a load of bullshit! Because that hadn’t mattered when her father was akumatized, it hadn’t mattered on Heroes Day! Which led Chloé to one inescapable conclusion - Ladybug was just like everyone else. Someone who changed the rules when it suited them, went back on their word without thought, and wasn’t nearly as kind or compassionate as she pretended to be. Really, Chloé should have known better than to ever hope. She shoved her notebook off the table in front of her, sending it flying into the back of Ms. Bustier’s desk with a satisfying bang when the metal furniture snapped back into form. “Chloé?” Chloé started at the voice of concern. Ms. Bustier slipped into the classroom from the door in the back and quickly approached her. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing!” Chloé spit out venomously, whirling away from her teacher towards the front of the room. Ms. Bustier put down her bag at her desk, rolled the chair from her desk in front of Chloé’s table, and took a seat. Chloé shifted uncomfortably. She didn’t want to talk out her feelings. “What were you working on?” her teacher asked, her voice calm and smooth as a still lake. Chloé shook her head rapidly. “Nothing! It was a stupid idea. I’m clearly not cut out for it.” “Maybe you just need some help,” was the gentle suggestion. Chloé sighed glancing up into the warm face of her teacher. “I… was trying to fix something. But I should’ve known better. I’m really good at making a mess of things. The idea of me fixing something is ridiculous.” Utterly ridiculous. Silence permeated the otherwise empty classroom. It was stifling. Chloé stared into her hands, folded under the desk. Her teacher remained silent, sending her emotions spiraling down to new depressing depths. Even Ms. Bustier didn’t know what to say. Clearly, Chloé was a lost cause. And so was her self assigned mission. “Do you want help?” Chloé looked up, searching the compelling green eyes of her teacher. She seemed earnest in her concern, but Chloé has been burned before. Her childhood nanny, Adele, had promised to help her, too. And then the petite woman had gotten herself fired and Chloé had never seen her again. It’s not like Bustier could actually help, anyway. But then, another thought struck through her psyche like lightning. Ms. Bustier totally could make a couple of kids sit alone in a room together. In a fucking circle. But Chloé hated circles. She took a deep breath. This was for Adrien. For Adrien. For Adrien. “Could… could we maybe do one of those circles? Not the community one, but the other one when people are fighting?” Ms. Bustier raised an eyebrow. “You want to do a restorative circle? Did I hear that right?” Want was not the correct word. But Chloé had tried everything she could think of. And at least the circle didn’t require getting someone akumatized. She forced herself to nod. Her teacher leaned forward and put a hand on Chloé’s knee. “Did something happen? Are you and Sabrina not speaking?” Chloé physically recoiled at the very idea. “What?! No! Sabrina is great. No… this would be with...” her indignation evaporated instantly, and she found her gaze glancing over the shoulder of her teacher’s white blazer. “With Marinette and Adrien.” Ms Bustier sat up straighter. “You’re just full of surprises today, Chloé.” Chloé risked another glance up, but her homeroom teacher was smiling. “Okay, and was anyone else affected by this conflict? Anyone else that you think is involved or might have hurt feelings? Or anyone else that hurt you in this same conflict?” Chloé cocked her head to the side, letting herself consider the question. Really, it just needed to be Marinette, Adrien, and Chloé. But… Alya’s presence could prove to be incredibly useful. And if Alya was there, Nino would likely reinforce everything the brunette would say… The only problem was involving more people would piss off Ladybug even more. Chloé grinned at the thought. She had never been above getting a bit of revenge when it was deserved. (And maybe undeserved). All five of them it would be. “Césaire, Lahiffe, and Adri-kins,” Chloé supplied. Bustier went to her desk and retrieved a notebook and quickly wrote down the names. “What happened?” Chloé hesitated. Technically, nothing had happened, though of course she and Marinette had a ton of history, dozens of fights and altercations that she could pull from, and yet… “I tried to tell Marinette something really important. But she won’t listen to me. And I can’t totally fault her for that, but this is really really important. Like fate-of-the-world-important!” she exclaimed, her hand stretching out to indicate the scope of the situation at hand. “What is it that you want to tell her?” “That she’s a blind self righteous know-it-all,” Chloé ranted. “And she needs to knock it off because she’s hurting someone that we both care about.” “Adrien?” Ms Bustier guessed even as she was taking notes. Chloé nodded. “Yes, Adrien, but she doesn’t even know that she’s hurting him because he will just sit there and take it! He’ll never say anything,” she lamented, her lips twisted into an indignant sneer. “But eventually he’s going to break, Ms. Bustier. And I don’t want to see that! I’ve been trying to get her to talk to me so I could give her some context and explain what she was doing, but she ignores me completely, or won’t even let me say hello before she declares she doesn’t have time for me and runs off!” “I can see how that would be frustrating for you, Chloé,” Ms. Bustier empathized. “But I also need you to understand that the purpose of the circle is to heal things between you and Marinette. It is not so you can yell and berate her when she is not allowed to leave. Do you understand?” Chloé sighed, but nodded anyway. “Now, do you have any idea why Marinette might be acting this way? Any reason at all that Marinette might distrust you or be unwilling to hear you out?” Chloé glanced away toward the classroom window, her righteous anger fading. When she turned to the front again, her gaze remained locked on her nails. “Perhaps,” she admitted, her voice carefully flat. “I may have antagonized her unfairly once or twice in the past.” Ms. Bustier’s lips trembled as if she was trying not to laugh. Chloé huffed out a sigh. “Okay fine, I’ve done a lot to her over the years. But that’s not true this time! Listening to me would make her life far less stressful and get her closer to Adrien.” “That’s quite the claim,” Ms. Bustier commented neutrally. “It’s the truth!” she declared hotly. “Okay. I believe you. Now, is there anything specific that happened recently that would cause Marinette to be more irate with you than she usually is?” Chloé glanced down at her nails, but she really didn’t know what to say. Did throwing a fit when Ladybug said she could never have the Bee Miraculous back count? Because the truth was, since Chloé had figured out the heroine’s identity, she had no idea why Ladybug had given her a chance in the first place. And she was just as confused as to how she had managed to lose that chance a few weeks later. Chloé certainly hadn’t treated Marinette any worse than she normally did in the intervening time. She had even teamed up with the girl once so they could keep Kagami away from Adrien! Ms. Bustier sighed, placed her pen down on her notebook, and leaned forward. “Chloé, in order to facilitate a restorative conversation between you and Marinette and the others, I need to prepare. I can only do that if you tell me what happened.” The blonde nodded. What could she tell her that would be useful in Ms. Bustier being prepared? “I…. figured out one of her secrets, something that is really important to her. And then I told her friends.” “They didn’t already know?” Chloé shook her head. “How did the others react?” Chloé pursed her lips in thought. How would the others react? Adrien was going to turn into a puddle of goo. Alya probably wouldn’t be much better, but she would feel guilty as hell for the whole Lila debacle. Nino was a rock, so Chloé had no idea how he would respond. But Marinette? She was going to be out of this world pissed. And for a second, Chloé hesitated. “Chloé?” “You think I took the time to talk to the plebians?” she countered hotly, too late to actually be convincing. Bustier raised an eyebrow. Chloé wilted. “Okay, fine!” she relented. “But I really don’t know. I could guess, but I didn’t stick around to see their reactions directly,” she improvised on the spot. “Why did you tell them?” She glanced down into the palms of her hands. “Because… they needed to know,” she admitted softly. “They can’t help her if they don’t know. And she…” she was drowning and Chloé worried how long it would be before Marinette was the akuma. And then where would Paris be? “Despite what she thinks, she can’t do what she does alone. She needs them. Especially Adrien.” Chloé clutched at her head with both hands. God! What was wrong with her?! Why was she even trying to help Marinette? Marinette would only be livid. She wouldn’t be grateful. She certainly wouldn’t give Chloé another chance with the Bee Miraculous. This was supposed to be for Adrien! Adrien was the one who deserved to be seen and appreciated. Maybe it was for both of them. Maybe Chloé didn’t need anything in return. She looked up to see Ms. Bustier smiling at her. “And what was this secret?” her teacher asked. Chloe balked. She knew it was silly. Ms. Bustier was going to know everything tomorrow anyway. But she was afraid Bustier would back out if she knew the full extent of what this was about. “I’d rather not say.” Her teacher’s green eyes considered her for a moment, and Chloé had to look away again. She sighed again before the educator spoke. “Thank you for telling me this bit. I need to interview the others and understand their side of the story and then we’ll get something scheduled.” Chloé jumped to her feet, shaking her head violently. “No! You absolutely can not talk to them beforehand!” Ms. Bustier was not disturbed by Chloé’s outburst. “And why not?” “Because Marinette will never ever agree to this if she knows what it’s about. Trust me. But she’s wrong. She needs this. Actually, we all do. I promise, everything is my fault. It’s not theirs.” The words fell out of her mouth unfiltered like a runaway train. “Chloé, I have rarely encountered a conflict where one side was wholly at fault. I’m sure the others have contributed.” This track wasn’t working. “I won’t participate if you talk to them beforehand,” Chloé threatened. “That’s not how this works, Chloé.” “Please!” Chloé begged. “You don’t understand. I can’t explain completely, but Marinette will not come if she knows what it’s about. I’ve already tried like four times this week! We have to blindside her.” “What is it about?” “But Ms. Bustier! This secret… it’s really…” Chloé stammered, searching for words that would not come. “It puts Marinette in a really vulnerable position. I’m not willing to tell you on the off chance that you are not able to pull off this circle. But if we do meet and I am able to actually talk to her, I think the benefit will outweigh the drawbacks of you knowing.” Ms. Bustier’s green eyed gaze pierced through her, and Chloé found it difficult not to fidget on the spot. “You’re asking me to put a lot of faith in you, Chloé,” she finally said. “I know!” Chloé conceded, bowing her head down. “And I realize I probably don’t deserve it.” “I didn’t say that,” her teacher interjected. “But I’m trying to be worthy of it. I swear! I’m trying to be better,” her gaze fell to her shoes. Two fingers on her chin gently urged her gaze up. “All you have to be, Chloé, is yourself.” Chloé’s squeezed her eyes shut, trying to suppress the sudden burn behind her eyelids. She shook her head in denial. A warm hand fell onto her shoulder and squeezed reassurance. Chloé shrugged it off. She didn’t want to admit the contact felt good. She shouldn’t need reassurances like that. She couldn’t afford the weakness. “Just to warn you, Marinette is going to be absolutely pissed. You may think you’ve seen her in self righteous must-fix-all-the-injustices-in-the-world Marinette mode, but this will take things to an entirely new level. And you probably should just let her fly off the handle. I don’t need her to be respectful. I probably don’t deserve it anyway.” Ms Bustier offered a gentle smile. “We all deserve respect, Chloé. But we can also create the space for Marinette to air her grievances and for you to be treated with respect.” Chloé appreciated Bustier’s confidence, but she also knew the teacher only knew the tip of the iceberg. “Ms. Bustier?” she asked softly. Ms Bustier looked up from her notes and gave Chloé her attentive gaze. “Yes, Chloé?” Chloé swayed from one foot to the other, her hands fidgeting at her waist. “Can I ask about the “honor privacy” norm?” Ms. Bustier nodded. “What about it?” “Are you included in that? Will you respect Marinette’s and everyone else’s privacy?” “I’m required by law to report certain things like child abuse or suicidal thoughts, but I will honor privacy in all other respects.” Chloé bit her lower lip. Where did having a secret identity that required you to constantly put yourself in harm’s way fall into that? “So like... any time a student is in danger?” she suggested. Her teacher nodded even though she was taking down notes into her notebook. Chloé cringed. Yeah, this was probably definitely something that fell into the category of something a teacher was required to report. “But…” Chloé glanced away again. “What if reporting it increased the danger they were in?” Bustier looked up at her then and frowned. “Are you in danger, Chloé? Is Marinette?” Oh, what the hell?! In for a penny, in for a pound. “I’m in danger all the time,” Chloé explained with a straight face and was pleased to see Ms. Bustier’s face frowning in growing concern. “I’m Queen Bee,” she declared. Ms Bustier’s frown transformed into an amused smile. “If you wanted that to stay private Chloé, you probably shouldn’t have announced it on live television.” “But that’s my point. I’m always in danger because people know my identity. Papillon knows, and he’s already used me to get to Ladybug before.” Her teacher softened. “Are you worried that he’s going to try again?” “No! I…” she threw her hands down in frustration. “I can’t put this into words!” “What does this have to do with Marinette?” “N-nothing.” Chloé wondered one again, why she was stalling. If her plan worked, Bustier was going to know everything by the end of day tomorrow anyway. “I was just trying to give you an example where sharing the knowledge of a student being in danger would put them more in danger.” Ms. Bustier put her hand on Chloé’s shoulder again, and this time Chloé allowed the warmth to remain. “I can appreciate the nuance of such a situation,” her teacher reassured. “I would never put a student in danger if I can help it. You must understand though, sometimes my hands are tied by legal requirements.”
Chloé nodded, figuring that was close enough. Surely, there wasn’t a specific law about teachers being mandated to reveal a superhero’s identity. There had never been enough instances of teenaged superheroes to codify that kind of requirement. Right? Ms. Bustier smiled kindly at her. “Is there anything else you want to tell me, Chloé?” Chloé pursed her lips. “Not really, no,” she concluded. “May I ask you a question?” The blonde nodded her assent. “Why are you doing this now? Trying to make amends with Marinette, I mean?” Chloé fidgeted nervously. She still didn’t really know how she felt about Marinette. Or about Marinette being Ladybug. But that’s not why she was doing this anyway. “I’m doing it for Adrien,” she finally admitted. “He needs Marinette to actually see him. I don’t know what will happen to him if she doesn’t. I’m really scared for him.” “It’s not Marinette’s responsibility to save him, you know?” “Maybe not, but she’ll want to. When she has the full picture she will love him better than anyone in the whole world. And if she doesn’t, I will be there to grind her face into the ground.” “Chloé…” Ms Bustier chastised disapprovingly. Chloé held her hands up in mock surrender, but she wasn’t actually sorry. She meant it. If Marinette didn’t learn to better appreciate her partner, Chloé would definitely make certain she regretted it. … Chloé walked out of Bustier’s classroom after class feeling more optimistic than she had in the last sixteen days. Ms. Bustier had passed out slips to the five of them requesting their presence at the next day’s lunch period for a restorative circle, which meant this was actually going to happen. Maybe by end of day tomorrow she would see Adrien’s megawatt smile again for the first time in weeks. But Chloé still had one loose end to take care of before she was confident that she could push Marinette into being honest. And that loose end involved Alya. And Chloé couldn’t even delegate the task to Sabrina because that would reveal identities to a civilian, and while Chloé was all for pissing Ladybug off, she did understand the danger of too many people knowing. Not to mention, she didn’t want Sabrina in danger more than she had to be. Sabrina was able to tell her Alya’s whole schedule though. So that was helpful. Chloé left her things with Sabrina with directions to deliver her bags to her car, and left “to go to the bathroom” ten minutes before the last class was over to wait outside Césaire’s 6th period. She was lucky that apparently Marinette didn’t share the class. Alya was one of the last to leave. But when she walked out the door, Chloé immediately fell into step beside the Ladyblogger. “I need to talk to you,” Chloé began without preamble. Alya cast her a dark look. “Why would I want to talk to you?” Chloé tried not to growl. She was only half successful. “It’s about Marinette. She needs your help.” “Why should I believe you about anything regarding Marinette?” Alya snapped, readjusting her bag on her shoulder and picking up her speed, not bothering to make eye contact. Chloé matched her pace easily. “You eat up everything Rossi says about her like a child eats up candy! I thought you’d believe anything,” Chloé shot back. “This conversation is over,” Alya declared cooly, whirling away. Chloé scurried after her. “No wait! I’m... I’m sorry.” That got Alya to pause. “You’re what?” “You heard me,” the blonde growled back. Chloé wouldn’t say it again. No friggin’ way. “So, are you going to listen now?” “This has gotta be big if it got the high and mighty Chloé Bourgeois to apologize for something,” Alya reasoned even as she let her bag fall unceremoniously from her shoulder to the ground as she turned to Chloé. “Marinette needs your help. Adrien does too. But they’ll never come clean on their own and certainly not at my suggestion. I need you to come clean first.” Alya’s dark eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. “Come clean about what?” “About being the Fox.” Alya stared at her, her auburn eyes as wide as the Seine. “What?!” she hissed, suddenly up in Chloé’s face. Chloé held her ground, but didn’t resist Alya getting in her space. “I can’t explain. Ladybug will kill me. But tomorrow, Ms. Bustier is going to pull the five of us together.” “Five of us?” “You, me, Nino, Adrien, and Marinette. I’m going to introduce myself as the Bee. I need you to introduce yourself as the Fox. Please! It’s for Adrien... and Marinette too.” She tacked on as an afterthought. “Please trust me as one partime hero to another. I swear, I’m trying to help.” Alya shook her head, her eyebrows furrowed together like an angry cat. “I won’t betray Ladybug’s trust.” “You’ll be helping her!” Chloé countered. “And Marinette too.” “No way, Chloé. You can’t trick me.” And with that, the would-be-journalist stomped off. Chloé watched her go. “Well, that could have gone worse.” ...

There were two things Ladybug hated the most about Chat Noir.
She hated how he flirted with her. Shamelessly, loudly, and always, always out of place.
Monday mornings were hectic as they were, and the akuma at five didn’t help with anything. It was Tikki who shook Marinette awake, chanting something about Hawkmoth, and Marinette had nearly face-planted onto the floor in an attempt to just get out of bed. Why was Hawkmoth even awake so early? Did he not sleep?
Her coordination wasn’t any better as she swung across the rooftops towards the site of devastation. Sliding behind a rooftop, Ladybug peered at the akuma—a woman who was wreathed in a dress of flames, floating leisurely down the street as she set fire to everything she could. She was still a couple of blocks away, but the fire was slowly but surely licking its way towards her hiding spot.
“Good morning to you, m’lady!” Chat’s voice sounded behind her, and Ladybug whirled around. “Early cat gets the bug, it seems.”
He was so chipper that Ladybug took it as a personal offence. Even with the chill of the morning air, she was still struggling with keeping her eyes open. Yet here was Chat Noir, looking invigorated and happy and awake.
“How,” Ladybug grouched, “are you so cheerful at this time?”
He winked. “Only because I got to see you.”
It was too early for this. “The feeling isn’t mutual,” Ladybug shot at him.
“Meowch! I lay my heart bare to you, Bugaboo, and you stomp all over it?” He clutched his chest and tilted his head back. “That’s cruel, even for you.”
Ladybug pushed his nose a little ways from her own. “Focus, chaton,” she chided. “If we finish this quickly enough, I can still go home and sleep before school starts.”
Chat let out the long-suffering sigh of someone who had gone above and beyond. Ladybug wanted to remind him that it was his own theatrics that often landed him in that position. “If I knew any better, I’d say you didn’t want to spend time with me.”
He had long mastered the hurt puppy (or was it kitty?) expression, and Ladybug giggled slightly as he pouted at her. The pout turned into a wide smile when she reached over to scratch his chin, and Chat positively melted against her hand. It was cute, sometimes, how a little could go such a long way—even if Ladybug would never admit aloud to anyone that she found him cute.
“Alright,” she said once he looked satisfied. “Let’s go get that akuma now.”
***
If Ladybug could choose the thing she hated even more than the flirting, it was the self-sacrificing.
She could live with the puns. She could live with the flirting. She could live with Chat trying to steal a kiss from her every once in a while. But Ladybug wasn’t sure if she could live with herself if Chat Noir were ever gone.
The akuma had been a bad one—it was still rampaging around the city, wreaking havoc. But none of that mattered, because the worst and only part Ladybug could focus on at the moment was Chat Noir’s state as he limped into the alley with his arm around her shoulders.
The red of his blood was barely visible against the red of her suit, but Ladybug could feel it, slick against her hands. She could see it too, the scene imprinted against her eyelids, just as well as she could still hear Chat’s cry of pain when the blow meant for her had hit him instead. And now, the smell of blood permeated through the air, clogging all of her senses. The memory tore through her head again and again: the blur of the silver blade heading towards her transforming into black and blonde and green, the agony she had braced herself for that never came. All of that lay manifest in her partner’s state at the very moment, and Ladybug thought that she had never felt more frightened in her entire life.
“M’lady,” Chat rasped. “I think we’re far enough. Can we—can we sit down?”
“Yeah.” Her voice shook, and Ladybug tried to school it back to normal. “Just… can you?”
Chat nodded dazedly. She gripped his arms as he eased himself onto the ground, a quiet groan escaping when he stretched the wound at his side. He ended up against the wall, head tilted back and teeth clenched as he tried to quell the blood flow with his hands.
“Chaton,” Ladybug whispered, cupping his face. Her hands left smudges of red against his cheek, the contrast stark. “Look at me. Open your eyes.”
A slit of emerald green showed as he peered at her from under his lashes. A smile-turned-grimace appeared on his face. “I’m okay,” he reassured her. “Really.”
“You’ve been stabbed!”
“Worse could happen,” Chat replied, a hysterical little giggle bubbling. Then he winced. “Shit. That hurts.”
Ladybug was torn between laughing in incredulity or smacking him. In the end, she did neither but tried to staunch the bleeding with him. Her stupid, brave, loyal, self-sacrificing partner. She hated it. She hated him.
Somewhere in Paris, the akuma was still on the rampage. Every second counted, but Ladybug couldn’t bring herself to care. One of her hands was pressed against the wound at his side, the other gripping his fingers so tightly that it seemed like she was the one bleeding out on the ground.
Chat was the one who ultimately broke the silence. “If this is all it took for you to hold my hand,” he joked, “I might’ve chosen to get stabbed more.”
Ladybug glared at him. “Stupid cat,” she hissed. “Make another joke out of this and I’ll make sure you regret it.”
“Still threatening me in this trying time, m’lady?”
He smiled at her again, blood on his cheeks, green eyes hazy. Yet somehow, in that state, he still managed to look at her like she was the only thing that mattered. As if he hadn’t just been skewered through a supposedly indestructible super suit, as if he wasn’t bleeding out in a random alley somewhere.
She stared at him for a couple seconds more. Her responsibility as a hero was but a dull thrum in the back of her head, demanding an answer she refused to give. She knew she had to, but there was no way she could simply leave Chat there as she left to hunt down the akuma.
As if he could read her thoughts, Chat Noir nodded at the rooftops. “Go,” he encouraged. “I’ll still be right here when you’re done.”
When Ladybug still didn’t move, his bloodied, clawed fingers slid on top of hers. “Go, Ladybug,” he reiterated. “I’ll be waiting.”
She stared into his steady, unwavering gaze, then surged forward and hugged him.
A small noise of surprise left Chat when her arms first wrapped around his neck. After a couple of seconds, he slackened into her gasp, cheek pressed against hers. Ladybug breathed in his scent—it was almost overpowered by the rustic scent of blood, but  still faintly—and told herself that he would be fine. He would be fine, because he had to be fine.
It felt like a second yet eternity when she finally pulled away. “Go,” he repeated for the third time, “and save the world, m’lady.”
She hated him—oh, how she hated him—but every time, she also loved him a little more.
***
There were two things Ladybug loved the most about Chat Noir.
She loved how he flirted with her. Shamelessly, loudly, and always, always out of place.
He found her perched on a rooftop overlooking the Seine. The night was now quiet, illuminated by streetlights. Ladybug had been watching the river sweep by, the distorted reflection of the cityscape imprinted fluidly on its surface. Nighttime Paris was her favourite—there was something beautifully unreal about it that also soothed her after a bad day. And today had been a particularly bad one.
There was a quiet thump behind her. Ladybug jumped, surprised, before a clawed hand rested on her shoulder. “Relax, Bugaboo,” Chat said as he sat down next to her. “It’s just me."
“Oh, great,” she grumbled. “There goes my peace and quiet.”
Chat, accustomed to her dry jokes, still feigned offence. It had long turned into a little game between them, and neither of them wanted to stop. “So many purrsonal attacks,” he protested, a hand over his heart. “Why, m'lady , if I didn’t know better, I’d think it’s because you’re too embarrassed to admit you want me here.”
“In your dreams, kitty.”
He sat down next to her. For a little while, both of them didn’t speak, and Ladybug continued staring forward, trying to soak in the serenity. Chat Noir remained silent as well. For someone who could be obnoxiously loud, he also knew when to shut up, and Ladybug appreciated that about him.
“M’lady.” Chat finally spoke up. “What’s on your mind?”
“How do you know I have something on my mind?”
He drew a leg up and rested his cheek against his chin, turning to look at her. Ladybug met his gaze as well. His green eyes, glowing slightly in the dark, were surprisingly serious. “Well, for one, you’re here. This is your sad spot. Your go-where-I’m-angry spot.”
“I come here when I’m not sad too,” Ladybug protested.
“Let me finish. Secondly, you didn’t put your heart into rejecting me tonight. Something’s wrong.”
“That’s how you tell?”
He shrugged. “Worked, didn’t it?”
A shaky laugh escaped her. “It’s personal,” Ladybug said. “I—I can’t really say. But you’re right. I’m glad you’re here. I came up here to be alone, but realized that I didn’t really want to be by myself. So, thank you.”
When he didn’t reply immediately, she wondered if she had hit another sore spot about their personal lives. Before she could apologize, Chat opened his hand and stretched it out in front of her.
It took a little too long for her to realize the offer, but the moment she did, she took his hand. His fingers wrapped around hers, tight but not too tight, steady and warm and anchoring. He didn’t say it aloud, but Ladybug could hear the implication behind his actions: I’m here for you no matter what. And she knew—even if she couldn’t talk to him about school, about her friends, about Adrien—he would be ready to listen or to offer silent support.
Comfortable silence blanketed them. Between Chat’s hand, the whisper of the wind and rippling of the Seine, some of the exhaustion and frustration and anger from that day began to slowly melt away.
“Ladybug,” Chat began.
She looked at him again. “Hm?”
“I’m so glad Eiffel for you.”
It took at least a couple of seconds for the pun to sink in, and then a giggle escaped Ladybug before she could stop it. Before she knew it, she couldn’t stop laughing, doubling over, howling until tears formed in the corners of her eyes and her stomach ached.
It was so stupid, and so… Chat. Only Chat Noir could possibly dream of such terribly perfect timing and know the exact, dumb thing to tell her.
“I hate you,” she wheezed.
“Nah,” he grinned. “You love me.”
Ladybug couldn’t bring herself to disagree.
***
If there was anything better than the out of place, over-the-top flirting, it was the way he always had her back.
Sure, they had their disagreements or the occasional fallout. But when she needed him most, Chat Noir never failed to be there.
Sometimes it was loud—he would come in whooping and shouting and being obnoxious—and other times, he would be silent, blocking what she couldn’t, making sure she wouldn’t be hurt, a steady shadow at her back. No matter what it was, Chat was always there at the right moment: not too early, not too late.
The mob of reporters were getting overwhelming as Ladybug edged back. The questions didn’t stop: where was Hawkmoth now? How long would it be before she and Chat Noir stopped him for good? Although her powers restored everything in the end, how much longer did they have to live in fear? Before she could even think of the answer to one question, there was another, then another, then another until they turned into a pile of demands that seemed to have only one answer: I don’t know.
Because Ladybug didn’t know. Because Ladybug couldn’t. Because no matter how hard she tried, it seemed as if Hawkmoth was always a step in front of them, and they just kept falling further and further behind. The noise grew until it seemed to engulf her like a wave, and Ladybug was drowning in their demands and fears and—
“Hey!” A flash of black dropped into her vision and just like that, Chat Noir was shielding her from the questions and cameras. “Back off. Have any of you ever heard of personal space?”
In his presence, a semblance of common sense returned. Chat had managed to create a circle of space for them, enough to hold back the pushing crowd, and Ladybug was struck with the urge to leave. She had to leave.
“M’lady,” he murmured, quiet enough that only she could hear. “Shall we go?”
Ladybug swallowed thickly. “Yes, please.”
An arm wrapped snugly around her waist the moment the words left her mouth. Despite being perfectly capable of keeping up on her own, Ladybug let Chat lift her. He gave the crowd a mock solute, a grin hanging on his lips, before his baton shot skywards.
Wind tore at them, and Chat let out a shout as gravity took hold and they plummeted down for a couple seconds. They vaulted over Paris, over waving children and surprised adults, until Chat finally landed on a bridge overlooking the scene. In front of them, Andre Glacier’s ice cream truck parked. Chat set her down gently. “Give me a second,” he said. “I’ll be right back.”
Ladybug waited as Chat approached Andre. They were talking in too low a tone for her to hear, but not long after, Chat was returning with an ice cream in hand, two spoons stuck in it. He offered her a hand.
When Ladybug didn’t respond, Chat picked her hand up and gave her a slight tug. “They must’ve done a number on you if you’re not even rejecting me,” he joked, but it was half-hearted. “Come on. Let’s find a bench to eat this on.”
Minutes later, they were seated facing the Seine, with Ladybug clutching the ice cream. Mint chocolate chip with strawberry—a strange combination. Stranger still was how good it tasted. Chat let her eat in silence, let her thoughts process, let her take the time she needed. It was only when she realized that the two spoons meant the ice cream was for the both of them that she actually handed it to him, sheepish.
“Sorry,” Ladybug mumbled. “I almost finished it.”
Chat shrugged. “It’s fine. I’m not that hungry anyway.”
He took it nonetheless, scooping the mix of mint chocolate chip and strawberry. The ice cream, slightly melted, swirled into a mix of green and pink on his spoon.
“Thank you.” Ladybug finally spoke up. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”
“Well,” Chat replied around a mouthful. “You could’ve told them all to fuck off because you’ve done much more than they have the past couple of months.”
Her breath escaped her in a choked laugh. “Chat!”
“What? It’s true.”
“Paris’ superhero shouldn’t be trash talking anyone,” she scolded.
“Well, for you, m’lady, I’ll do anything.” He stuck out his tongue, still coated with ice cream, and Ladybug let out a shriek and backed away from him.
“Gross! Chat!”
He burst out laughing. Chat’s laughter had always been contagious, wonderfully so bright and sunny and cheerful, and Ladybug found herself laughing with him. They laughed until Chat tipped over their ice cream, the only thing left being melted sludge, and it splattered unappetizingly against the sidewalk. Then, one look at each other, and both of them started again.
By the time Ladybug was finally getting herself back under control, a bit of the weight had lifted. In her periphery she could see that Chat was still watching her, a smile on his face, and Ladybug tried to ignore his expression until she could no longer pretend.
“Stop staring at me,” she complained. “It’s—” Distracting.
The words left her. Because there he was, looking at her with such affection and trust and adoration in his eyes that Ladybug was certain that she, of all people, didn’t deserve it. Everything she was going to say seemed to disappear, and she stared at Chat Noir, stumped and breathless.
As if he knew he had caught her attention, he smiled again. “Everything they said today,” he started, “throw it away. Don’t listen to it or keep any of it to heart.”
Ladybug jolted from her reverie. “Chat—”
“Let me finish. Paris sees you saving them, but if they can’t be thankful for it, that’s on them. Don’t let anyone let you think you haven’t done enough. No one. Especially not yourself. And don’t ever say you don’t deserve every bit of praise you get, m’lady, because you deserve it all.”
A response welled up, but it didn’t make it past her lips. Ladybug stared at Chat with wide eyes, mute, as he took her hands. “We’ll get Hawkmoth together,” he promised. “When we do, there’s no way he’ll be prepared for what’s coming for him.”
There were still no words Ladybug could say, but she smiled. Between the two of them, sometimes words weren’t needed.
Because even if all of Paris were to burn, as long as she had her partner by her side, things would turn out fine in the end.

Marinette did not sign up for this pt2
forgot to post this before i passed out last night. part one here ao3 here
It was almost four years into being Ladybug when the Justice League made contact.
In that time, she and Chat had built the miraculous team and they both knew each members identities, but swore them all to not seek out one another’s identity. (Though Alya was Alya and had Carapaced figured out on his first outing… convincing her not to reveal that to him took a bit. The girl was determined, but Marinette follows Fu’s rules to the letter (as much as she can) and that meant Secrets Stay Secret damnit.)
Not contacting the JL themselves was partially due to some fallout the Mayor and Parisian government with a (dissolved) Justice League’s branch. It was well before her team’s time. Something about collateral damage and if her miraculous could fix damage dealt by JL members or not playing some role in that too.
She decided it was a good thing when two years later she found a fucking dagger with a large bouquet on her balcony. It became a regular occurrence for special occasions—birthday, winter holidays and on Easter (she didn’t even know why on that one. Her parents aren’t Catholic. Maybe Murder Robin was, or thought she was?). She would just find some weapon with flowers somewhere in her room. She had no fucking clue what Murder Robin (Alya found articles where the ‘new’ Robin was cited as likely having killed multiple people in Gotham and just, yikes) or his friends or even her father (Fucking Batman, the Ghost of Gotham) might have meant by leaving it, but it was clear they had her address, knew which room was hers, and could do a lot of damage if she toed the line. She wasn’t testing any of those ‘no contact rules’ after that.
Hiding a dagger and various other weapons (so many knives and throwing stars) from Maman by giving it to Fu and later passing it off as an eccentric gift from him to her for always helping him out was… an adventure when Fu was still Master Fu. She hopes Murder Robin doesn’t find out about that bit. She has no clue how he or his family (not hers, hers are in Paris with her. Hers at least tried to talk to her, tried to listen and did make time for her. His family? Complete strangers she may share DNA with.)
She (logically) should be terrified that Murder Robin knows her alias and secret identity are the same person; if he’s really one of the world’s greatest detectives’ kids, why wouldn’t he know? Batman must have known for years—why else would Murder Robin be able to find her? the DNA scan was in a closed match system to just Paris. And she knew there was no way Goddamn Batman, Ghost of Gotham, would hang around Paris long enough to get dragged into the system for him to have a ping.
He just did not want anything to do with her or her city’s trouble since it wasn’t his. She wasn’t his. Wasn’t wanted by him. That was fine—he has enough to worry about in his hell city.
Sending Murder Robin out to do his dirty work?
Not fine.
Her team and her were… managing the Hawkmoth situation. Keeping it from spilling out of Paris since Startrain. Goo-guy managed to give them a break—people can grab akuma that aren’t meant for them and become much weaker akuma than if the akuma reached its target. Same with the few that could grab an akuma in the air. It meant when akuma went out, some citizens were willing to bear Hawkmoth’s wrath for a bit—even groups taking turns sometimes—to prevent someone from getting akumatized until Ladybug could purify the akuma or Chat Noir could destroy it.
And for akuma battles, well, she has more than just her and Chat, Luck (Creation) and Destruction. Viperion gave them multiple chances to change costly choices in battle. Bunnix fixed the ones that Viperion couldn’t. All oversized opponents fell to Ryuko and her mastery of the elements, even if she can’t always make it thanks to different schools and tight schedules. Miss Sting was chosen by Marinette—Aurore was easy to lean on for news team reports and media appearances that Ladybug and Chat Noir don’t have the time or energy for. Plus, Aurored needed the anger management, so win-win. Don’t even get her started on Pegasus or King Monkey always being ready at a moment’s notice and how they both started joining Nino and Alya’s parkour dates that have morphed into group hangouts in last two years. Seriously—if she knew where she needed to be, Max was ready to answer her call. If she knew more chaos would work as a distraction, long live King Monkey, the Great Distractor.
Then there’s her emotional support in the field (besides her chaton), Carapace. He’s a great shield in battle, good with civilians and quick to defend. He’s also big on mental health (something their team sorely needed). How Nino managed to get turtle headphones, Marinette doesn’t know. She does know she nicks them from him regularly as Ladybug for team hangouts and when she needs to clam down on patrol.
Then there is her civilian bestie, the one who convinced her to stay as Ladybug, Alya Cesaire, aka Rena Rogue and the Ladyblogger. Rena Rouge is by and far one of her favorites to talk about potential Hawkmoths with, and work out akuma prevention techniques with. In the battlefield she was one of the first to strike (even if that’s not how she should be using the flute, Marinette has no room for judgment given how she uses all of her Lucky Charms.) Alya always posted and circulated anti-akuma tips and altered the Ladyblog to have each icon for known miraculous mean something.
Marinette was nothing but supportive of her friend, even if the blog is a behemoth to maintain and resulted in Alya retiring as her Deputy (Rose took over gleefully as Deputy). She liked that the Ladybug was for news, and the Cat for if an attack is ongoing. The Butterfly tracks akuma sightings before an attack, and was a bit on the nose in her opinion, but it’s effectively mapped out areas where Hawkmoth’s lair is or has an opening, giving them an area to investigate and patrol more heavily. The Turtle offered guided meditation videos and yoga sessions (somehow always on-going), while the Fox was for group chats and various akuma-related support groups. The Peacock offered mental health resources, and was constantly growing. The Bee was for self defense videos and sat next to Dragon for akuma survival tips. The Snake was one of her personal favorites, advice on calming down with guided breathing if someone feels close to being akumatized, and she’d used it herself more than once. The Horse was the one she’s the least familiar with, for shelter routes that she never used. The Monkey held a number of fun distractions, videos and memes uploaded by her followers with art and songs, and was overall very light hearted.
Marinette is proud of her team.
Though it doesn’t mean there aren’t days she’s waiting for it all to unravel, or for an Older Bunnix to appear again and tell her they have to undo the day Marinette’s identities were compromised. But that is a always an apocalypse event option only. Chat Blanc still haunts Marinette’s nightmares, and Alix’s too. the Princess Justice timeline haunts Alix since she lived it in real time, but it’s Adiren’s nightmare come to life in multiple other akuma attacks. Apparently if Marinette is akumatized, she brings about a second Reign of Terror so encompassing, it made Robespierre’s look like a child’s drawing of what a reign
It was during another Syren event when things went from workable to a slow boiling unbearable. All but Alix were transformed and fighting minions to clear a path for Ladybug to get to the main akuma.
Imagine her frustration when Aquaman and Aqualad appeared behind her while she was scouting on the outskirts, and both refused to make any eye contact, practically kneeling in water to her and making themselves a target. When they should be able to read the room and see that the battlefield isn’t the place for this.
“Oh Great Paschalítsa” Aquaman began, “I understand your hesitance in this matter, given the Miraculous and Atlantis’ history,” Aquaman continued as she dodged yet another minion further ahead and kept working her way to where the akuma was, ignoring his speech. “But I ask that you do not sink—”
Marinette gave up on her current task to ensure there wasn’t some international incident of Ladybug letting Aquaman be captured by akumas or something. She’d never head the end of it if she didn’t.
But now they were surrounded. Aqualad at least kept his attention on the task at hand (re: keeping minions from spotting her) as they all worked out a way to escape, even if he wasn’t looking anywhere near her. Apparently Aquaman got the message (finally) and did the same as his sidekick(?) after Aqualad made a few gestures she wasn’t paying attention to. She does have an akuma item to break and akuma to catch and purify.
The pair did manage to act as decent bodyguards and distractions while she worked out the kid’s item and how it connected to their fixation—no swimming until their grades up meant all of their gear but a whistle was taken away. One Lucky Charm and convoluted plot that merged fighting in 3-D, a pair of scissors and a lot off kicking off underwater buildings later, and Paris was back to normal.
She managed it without talking to Aquaman once. She could give quick directions to Aqualad without toeing the line—he wasn’t part of the Justice League and was known to operate in the ocean alone when Aquaman wasn’t there.
“Great Paschalítsa,” Aquaman began and Marinette wanted him to go off and leave her alone. Him and Aqualad. “As king of Atalntis, I humbly offer my aide in whatever has caused you and the great Mávri Gáta to show yourselves to the world.”
What was with all this formal speech? Marinette thought they knew French, or well, Alya mentioned it said they did in their bio, but it clearly wasn’t the kind her class used for projects. And Marinette was exhausted, frustrated, and now did not have a good and convenient target for her rage (re: akuma that drowned Paris) and well…
Well, she blew up. A bit. But can you blame her?
They wouldn’t take the hint. (Silence means Fuck Off).
“Look,” Marinette whirled on them, ignoring her team’s shock and not even going in for the celebratory ‘Pound it’.  “I told Murder Robin—“ the pair winces at the that wording. Good. They knew who she meant then.
“—that I won’t get involved with anything involving our dad.”
She didn’t miss the sharp intakes from her team. Chat knew, only due to a freak out over being left a freaking sword one time and she panicked, okay?
“And I meant it. Just because Batman felt guilty or something,” She doubted it. Ghost of Gotham doesn’t feel anything and can apparently take out entire buildings on occasion. (Even if she was pretty sure that was someone filling in for him, she wouldn’t discount it either.) “That Doesn’t mean I’m going to change my mind on the matter—My team has got this. And we don’t need a handout four years too late.”
They had to. Fu was gone (For three months now. Three months Marinette held the weight of being The Guardian on her shoulders alone. She had to have this. She wouldn’t trust random elements sent by Mr. ‘I accept my murderous son and ignore the one in constant peril that blew herself up twice to save Paris.’
“Bug out.”
She knew her team would have questions, but Chat could answer them for now and Miss Sting would be able to handle any questions if any the media tried anything. Bright side of having the main Miraculous Team journalist as Rena with a determined hacker Pegasus; if it was personal to the team, the pair made sure it was never there.

Later at JL HQ
Aquaman walked up to Batman once the meeting was over. Batman knew the man had something on his mind and that it was related to himself—why else would he keep looking at him during the meeting? Whatever was troubling the Atlantian, Bruce could only hope it wasn’t emotions. That was really, really not his department… Jonn was much better with issues like that.
“Batman, may I have a word?”
Batman nodded, quick to follow the other out into a more private room.
“It has come to my attention that your daughter and you have a, uh, tricky relationship.”
Batman raised an eyebrow, as his relationship with Cass was doing well… he thought. Maybe he should visit her more? She was doing fine on her own and was always warm to him when he visited her in China on her missions against the Triad. Perhaps he should see if she was open to working with him on a case on that, or see if she wanted to come to Gotham again.
“And I don’t mean to judge here,” Aqua man continued, obviously nervous. “But uh, apparently your current Robin is well aware of her existence.”
Batman raised an eyebrow under the cowl. “Black Bat and Robin are close.”
The way Aquaman’s face contorted indicated nothing good. “Your other daughter.” The man paused, waiting for Batman to understand. “Ladybug.”
Bruce… Bruce froze. “I don’t have another daughter.” Not to his knowledge.
Aquaman ran a hand through his hair. “Well apparently ‘Murder Robin’ has met her,” Aquaman said with air quotes of all things. “Years ago.”
Bruce felt his heart stop. Damian’s… adjustment into the family had not been easy. And a few years ago Damian was much more… willing to do things against the Batcode, things that had him thriving in the League of Assassins. Things that changed a person. Things he’d need to ask this Ladybug—his daughter, another surprise child—about.
“And given that a Ladybug being active has always been a sign of a potential apocalypse—“
Batman’s red flags began flashing. Hard. His child was in danger and fighting a potential apocalypse event. Without his help. Without Batman’s resources.
“I assume Ladybug is a mantel.” Bruce hoped she had a mentor, someone to ease her into hero-work.
“Yes.” Aquaman looked… hesitant then. “Were it not for one Ladybug’s mercy, my people would have died when Atlantis was sunk by her equal, the Black Cat’s user. It seems this time they’re allies this time, against the Butterfly—I, Batman, are you alright?”
Bruce was not okay, at all. There is an ongoing apocalypse event, a daughter he never met stopping it (how old was she? Was she Damian’s age or older? Younger? He didn’t want her to have to live with this life, but she was and was doing so without him, without his help, without someone he knew she could lean on for support) and apparently his youngest son was well aware of this and did nothing to help. Did not even tell him.
He was going to have words with Damian.
“Excuse me.” Batman turned to leave. He has a son to interrogate, research to do, and a daughter to find (beg forgiveness for not getting to her sooner, and help her) on top of the usual workload. A Bat’s work is never done.
Wonder Woman who stopped him while he was reeling with this information, her grip too solid on his arm, and unlikely to break.
“It is not wise to rush in.” She began, appealing to reason in the hopes of keeping a panicked “Batdad” from making the situation worse. “From what Aquaman has told us, she does not welcome your involvement,” she said slowly, hoping it would sink in. “The Ladybug Miraculous has always been an agent of creation, of healing.” Diana hoped that would set her friend’s mind at ease. Ladybugs were notorious for their battle prowess and strategies, yes, but first and foremost their duty was to undo damage. “Ladybug herself will have much on her shoulders if her role is anything like my mother’s when she was among the Chosen, and adding yourself to the equation before her adversary is defeated will only serve to distract her from her goal.”
Batman remained tense, but didn’t struggle against Wonder Woman’s grasp. Good.
Green Lantern was the next to approach, as planned. “So why don’t you focus on your family in Gotham before rushing into meeting this kid,” Green Lantern—no, Hal suggested. “We’ll work on finding out what’s causing this possible apocalypse. You get your house in order.”
Bruce heard the words that weren’t said. Find out what your ex-assassin son did your demi-god daughter and make sure he doesn’t screw up anything further.
“That is not—“
“Batman.” Wonder Woman squeezed his arm. “This is not a suggestion.”
Cold curled in Bruce's stomach. His daughter was in danger, fighting against a potential apocalypse, and he was told to sit this one out. When it was personal. (His daughter who he needed to meet, to learn about, to see what made her tick and work out how to help her wherever she might need it. His daughter who he had lost years with.)
(They were ordering him to lose more time with her.)
“You are benched from League activities until this is sorted out.” Wonder Woman continued, as though she hadn’t just gutted Bruce. “I will take lead on Ladybug’s case. My people have much experience with her and the Black Cat as allies.” It was Diana that was smiling then. “Perhaps Mother’s connection will convince her to allow our aide.”
Green Lantern nodded along. “And when I’m not with you guys, well, GL core is in charge of keeping things not-apocalypse-y across the universe and keeping it from spiraling. And Miraculous tend to like the whole Balance thing, so it shouldn’t be too much for me to help out every now and then with them too.”
Bruce twitched where he was. He wasn’t going to win this. Not by a long shot.
But they were taking Aquaman and a Green Lantern. Granted, at least it wasn’t Guy. But a Lantern. Over him. When it involves his family.
He had to get his house in order quickly.
--
Damian would say he was quite pleased with himself that day. He managed to decide the type of weapon that would help his sister defend herself against others best, given her profession as a seamstress, he was annoyed he hadn’t thought of it sooner. Selecting the type of needle to give her, and to ensure they could be used for fabrics to give her a reason to carry them on her person, was crucial however.
She had rejected his other offerings thus far, though he could hardly blame her. This would be his seventh attempt. He did hear it was a lucky number from somewhere… and he had gotten better since his last attempts at understanding the type of person she showed herself to be and the type of person she wished to be seen as.
The Swiss dagger on his first attempt was too bulky and not hidden enough for a style of fighting she should strive to cultivate. His second attempt was an ear dagger which were easier to use and she could add additional force with her thumb. He thought it was better protection for her, and it was small enough this time to be kept in her purse. Much better than his first attempt. Only from her pictures he knew it wasn’t ever in her purse.
He had failed to find her an acceptable apology gift that offered her the protection she needed. The third was when he moved to a larger blade, hoping the thin rapier could be hidden well enough as decorative or as a fancier fencing tool than standard. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility given her closeness to an Olympic level fencer and this ‘Adrien Agreste’ who often partnered with Tsurugi. He was glad she had taken to displaying it at the least, though Adrien claiming to have given it to her left a bad taste in his mouth.
His sister wished to not have it known she had her own weapons then, he could handle that. His fourth attempt was  going to be a butterfly knife but given legal restrictions that he had come to realize she would follow (as idiotic as they were) he changed it to a classic Swiss knife. He did see this carried on her person on occasion, but not often. He looked into more easily concealed knives and gifted her a ballpoint pen knife—it looked like a pen and he made sure to customize it to resemble the pens in her room (he took a sample for reference) and did see her often carrying that one, though by active attempt or chance he couldn’t gather. He decided she would need a long range item next, and gifted her a small variety of throwing stars (and a knife or two, she seemed to favor possible close combat weapons of those he gave her). He noticed that none of these were carried on her person (he may have bugged them with trackers to figure out her preference) and they rarely left her room.
That was why he concluded that this time needles that she could use for sewing or battle were his best bet. Finding a way to walk that line was proving challenging.
Father came in while he was making his selection. He did find it odd Father hadn’t mentioned her to the rest of the family, but it could be that he wished her a more peaceful life. Damian would not disrespect his father’s wishes by bringing her up.
“Damian, we need to talk.”
Damian furrowed his brow, running over what could warrant that tone. He came up empty.
Father did move closer and see he was looking at needles this time. And showed surprised.
“For Okhti Al Kobra,” Damian stated, hoping his father wouldn’t be upset at him recognizing her. He knew now it was better for her to be apart from them, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t do what he could to help her protect herself. His older sister deserved better.
Father did freeze at that.
Had Damian displeased him? (He wouldn’t… wouldn’t send him to back. Damian knew that. But that look… it brought back the boy that wondered when he’d be tossed aside by the Great Batman for no longer being a good solider.)
“Father? I know you don’t like to speak of her but.”
“You, you’re getting her needles?” it was a question. He didn’t get why.
“Yes, my last presents seemed inadequate. She has taken to the penknife, but only sometimes. She keeps the Swiss on her sometimes too—haven’t you been keeping an eye on her social media? She posts a disgusting amount. I figured given the boutique it wouldn’t be unacceptable for her to carry needles on her as a weapon and tool in the future, should anyone else discover our connection.”
Bruce stared Damian, waiting for him to finish.
“She does keep the flowers I left her, though she does react oddly. The first time she was very pale.” Looking back, it was likely fear. She was a civilian after all… “However I believe she has come to accept that even with distance, she is still a Bat by blood and as such, should remain vigilant.” Damian hoped his report was adequate.
“She… how old is she?” Father’s tone was softer then. but the question didn’t make any sense.
“Father, you should know how old she is.” Damian waited for the man to respond.
He didn’t.
Damian furrowed his brow. “Father, you do know who she is, right?”
“Ladybug.”
Damian blinked at that. He had no idea who that was, but he knew an alias when he heard one. “She’s a civilian—when did she—”
“Damian.” He stilled at that. “How old is she?”
Damian straightened then. “She was twelve and a half when we first met. She will be sixteen in two weeks.” Damian glanced at his abandoned screen. “She enjoys design.”
“Her, her name.” His father looked… lost.
“I, we don’t revel secret identities?” Damian was a bit lost. Father should know of his sister. They were only two years apart. She was from before his father’s training became serious. He should know of her, at least. And if he didn’t, wasn’t it a betrayal to her if he revealed who she was without her permission? Whenever he tried to visit, she was always elsewhere, and he couldn’t very well show up as Damian Wayne. That would reveal the family and she didn’t need to know that. Didn’t need that burden.
“She knows she’s my daughter.” Father sounded…desperate.
“She knows she is Batman’s. I didn’t reveal your identity, or the family’s.”
“I…”
Damian took a deep breath. He didn’t want to betray his family. Or further hurt his older sister. “I believe that we should speak to her before discussing her identity. It… it should be her choice.”
Father looked pained at that.
“I assume you don’t…” No, father would not know how the first meeting went… right?
Father said nothing before leaving.
Damian wondered if he should visit her sooner. He eyed his cart and got her a set of weaponry needles, knitting, and a set made for seamstresses with small hands. He hoped these were to her liking. Perhaps he should add white heather (Protection) and purple hyacinth (I’m sorry) in addition to the zinnias…. Or just give her two with the zinnias mixed between them, as Damian reasoned the heather and hyacinth wouldn’t looks the best together. Yellow (daily remembrance) and scarlet (constancy) zinnias with heather (protection) and some greenery should be fine, and purple hyacinth (I’m sorry) mixed with magenta (lasting affection) white (goodness) and perhaps a white daffodil (stay as sweet as you are) with a filler of some sort would work well. She accepted his apologies (albeit in flowers) before, and he hoped he had proven he was paying enough attention to her for her to see that he meant it.
He was glad he hadn’t killed her that day.
Now he had research to do to help his sister.
He missed Brown as she slipped out. And completely missed finding out she was messaging Todd, Drake and Cassandra the news: there was a missing Bat into design, goes by Ladybug, and Bruce has no clue what her identity is.
Cass didn’t send anything in response.
Jason stated he would find her before Tim.
Stephanie was just excited for another girl in the group. Little sister in need of help? Count her in—being Spoiler versus being Batgirl was a world of difference. Having a team made it easier, and it shouldn’t be too hard to convince the girl to give it a shot, right?

Of Black Chats and Fallen Angels (chapter 2)
Read it here on AO3!
Chapter 1 | You are here | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5
*********************************************
Tikki rolled her eyes for what had to be the millionth time that afternoon as Marinette flopped back on her bed. She had spent every moment-- from the moment Adrien drove away to the second she shut her trap door-- ranting about ‘how could he possibly think offering me an umbrella could win me over’ and ‘why was he looking at me with that stupid smile on his face’ and on and on and on. As much as Tikki adored her holder, she could be exhausting with her overthinking and lack of, for lack of a better term, ‘chill’.
“Marinette,” Tikki chided.
Marinette hadn’t heard a thing as she walked over to a project she had started earlier that week. It was white nylon off-the-shoulder number with numerous belts and buttons that shouldn’t have worked as well as they did together, with a hem that stopped mid-thigh. She fussed over the neckline and Tikki worried that she would pick up a needle. Or worse-- decide to change something.
“Marinette… ” Tikki warned.
Nothing good ever came from a ranting, angry, Marinette; especially when said Marinette decided to start sewing. Tikki had witnessed far too many meltdowns just hours after an angry sewing session and decided it was best (and safest for the sanity of all involved) if working on any project, school, or otherwise was best reserved for a time when her holder was more stable.
Much to Tikki’s relief, Marinette walked away from the dress, fiddling with the ends of her hair instead.
“-And don’t even get me started on the way he showed off his stupid limo.” The girl huffed as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I mean who even does that!? Ugh, and the way he-”
“MARINETTE!” Tikki interjected.
“Huh?” She said as if Tikki calling her name had brought her out of some sort of trance.
“You’ve gotta stop overthinking this,” Tikki sighed. “I know you don’t like him, but isn’t there a possibility that he was just trying to be helpful? People do that type of stuff, you know.”
She shot Tikki an exasperated look. “Then explain the whole gum incident.”
How? Tikki thought as she brought her tiny hands up to her face. How can she possibly be the most intelligent while also being the densest holder I’ve had in a millennium?
Tikki took a deep breath as she prepared to explain the situation for the millionth time. Marinette was going owe her so many cookies later
*********
Marinette was confused as hell, but that was nothing new. What was new was the source of her confusion. Oftentimes, when Marinette had a hunch or a gut feeling, she listened and that was it-- but this was different.
There was something unusual about Adrien Agreste. That was what Marinette knew. She also knew that she should not, and didn’t, trust Adrien Agreste. She knew that she had no real reason not to trust Adrien Agreste, as he had done nothing to her.
Marinette knew that she was, at the very least, physically attracted to Adrien Agreste.
Well, she didn’t know it-- not yet at least. And maybe that was why she had been ranting to Tikki for the past three hours-- getting an extensive lecture/explanation in return. Being a teenage superhero who fought evil purple butterflies with a punning leather catboy for a partner, there had to be some shred of normalcy in her life. If obsessing over the minute details of a five-minute interaction with a guy she didn’t like was her normal, then so be it. Besides, it wasn’t like she had anything better to do.
“Marinette” Tikki sounded like she wanted to drown herself in cookie batter. “I’m going to find something to eat. I’ll get back to you when you’ve calmed down a little”
Or that’s what she thought until something outside her window caught her eye--
An akuma.
Damnit. Marinette knew she wasn’t exactly in the best headspace for fighting, but it wasn’t like she could coordinate certain dates with Hawkmoth. She chuckled aloud as a mental image of her, Chat, and Hawkmoth meeting at a round table popped into her head.
“Ahem” came a noise from across the room.
Marinette looked over at Tikki and nodded, transforming. She couldn’t help but wish for the absurd scenario as she soared above the buildings of Paris.
*********
“What’s the damage so far?” Ladybug asked as she landed right in sync on top of a building next to a running Chat Noir.
The past few months Chat Noir had been around, everything felt lighter. While Hawkmoth had most definitely been getting more intense, it seemed as if it didn’t matter as long as her partner was around. He was able to sense what needed to be done without asking or meticulously planning ahead, along with the fact that he was good with the press. While not as important, Ladybug treasured the fact that she didn’t have to worry about answering questions that required vague answers.
They had become best friends as well. Despite not knowing the other’s identity, they knew each other inside and out. Ladybug couldn’t help but smile as she thought about the countless nights they had spent perched atop the Eiffel Tower, discussing everything from school to Hawkmoths identity to how different their lives would have been having never met. Or if one of them had been someone else.
But there was something strange about him that she couldn’t figure out. Sure, there was the standard strangeness you would expect from a punning leather catboy, but there was something else as well. She saw it in the way he seemed to float a second longer than he should have whenever he was using his staff, or in the way his gaze lingered on shimmering patches of stars in the sky. How she had sometimes seen him whispering to the sun or moon… almost like a prayer.
Ladybug eventually noticed that she and Chat had stopped running; he was calling her name, concerned.
“You there M’lady?”
She shook her head and smiled. “Yeah, sorry. So what are we looking at today?”
“Chemist from PSL Research University,” Chat began. “A coworker refused to take proper precautions before testing, which ended up hurting a couple of other chemists and about 4 interns.”
Ladybug sighed. “These are the worst kind.”
Chat nodded. “Right reason, wrong reaction.”
“Let’s get this over with?”
“Ready when you are bugaboo.”
*********
“Goddamnit,” Chat seethed as he and Ladybug ran into the sewers for a third transformation.
Ladybug grumbled from around the corner. “I’m starting to lose sympathy for this guy.” She fed Tikki, and a pink light flashed just a second after Chat’s. “Ready to go?”
“Just a minute.” He said before she got the chance to come around.
She fiddled with her yo-yo while she tried her best to think of a plan. So far, they had tried the lab coat, safety goggles, and ID. What more was there?
The akuma’s design was simple enough. A pitch-black lab coat and neon yellow safety goggles-- really, Hawkmoth?-- along with their ID and a belt that held several different colored vials. Their hair stood up in an Einstein-like fashion, wild locks jutting out from all sections of their head, along with some sort of chemical that fizzed everywhere they stepped. How was that even possible?
Ladybug grimaced as she heard The Alchemist shouting from outside. “Grow a pair and show your damn faces! Why can’t Paris’ so-called heroes protect their city?” They were silent for a moment and Ladybug knew Hawkmoth must have been speaking to the victim. “Forget you both. I’ll get your miraculous and take care of this place myself. They don’t need you.”
The akuma-- or The Alchemist, as they named themselves-- had spent the better part of two hours spraying people with a liquid that kept them safe… while also making them invincible. Why the hell anyone, even an akuma, thought that would be a good idea was beyond her.
With their newfound invincibility, people lost all inhibitions.
In her three years of being Ladybug, the heroine had never seen havoc wreaked upon Paris like this. The streets were pure chaos as it seemed that the city’s lowest and most evil had come out of hiding. Looting, rioting, and arson could be seen anywhere you looked. She knew the screams from that night would haunt her forever, and she was sure she had seen a dead body or two somewhere. There had to be some other factor here. How could the city she had worked so hard to protect possibly be this self-destructive?
Marinette was afraid and stressed beyond belief. They had never faced anything as intense as this, what if they couldn’t fix it, what if Hawkmoth finally--
Wait…
Momentarily pulling herself out of her thoughts, Ladybug heard a murmuring from around the corner. It was Chat Noir, but what was he doing?
“All I’m asking is that you help us out,” Chat muttered. “Just this once, then I’ll leave you alone, I swear.”
Was he--
Was he praying?
“Thank’s in advance I guess. If not, screw you.”
Before Ladybug got the chance to say anything, Chat came around the corner with a grim look on his face.
“Let’s get this over with,” He said.
And they did.
After three transformations, plans A through S, and several words Master Fu definitely wouldn’t have approved of, The Alchemist had finally been de-evilized. Once they left the sewers, Ladybug called upon her lucky charm once again and received a canister of liquid nitrogen and a test tube. Scooping a small amount of the fizzing chemical and freezing it, the substance froze in the form of a butterfly, then smashing it and fixing the damaged caused. Ladybug took a shaky breath before making her way towards Chat and the victim.
Horrified at the destruction his abilities had caused, the victim, Dr. Marcel Roux, apologized-- close to tears. Calming him down took a while, but after reassurance, they managed to find him a safe ride home.
Despite the ladybugs fixing everything, Ladybug and Chat Noir both had a sinking feeling that some people weren’t returning home that night.
*********
Wishing both him and the driver a good night, she and Chat sat atop the Eifel Tower, exhausted. Being home was most likely the smartest and safest option, but after what they had seen that night neither of them wanted to be alone with their thoughts that night.
“Chat,” she began.
“Hmm,” came a noise. Ladybug turned to him to see that he was against one of the support beams. The moonlight hit his face, and Ladybug wondered how someone could look that angelic any time of day.
“You never told me you were religious.”
His eyes snapped open and his gaze was locked with hers. “What do you mean?”
“Earlier,” she began. “While we were in the sewers, I heard you praying. Kind of a rude one but a prayer still.”
He snorted. “I wouldn’t exactly call myself religious. I don’t go to church or practice any religion, and I definitely don’t have any sort of relationship with the man upstairs,” Ladybug noticed that he seemed to give the sky some sort of look. Almost imperceptible, but he looked as if he was angry. “But I figure when you’re that low, a little wish can’t hurt.”
She hummed in response, then yawned as she looked over the city.
“I had no idea they were capable of something like that,” she said.
Her partner gave a grim chuckle in response. “Give someone enough power, they’ll do plenty of shit you weren’t expecting.”
Marinette knew he had a point, but there was a nagging feeling in her gut that something really wasn’t right. Of course she didn’t know the people of Paris that well. She had only been a hero for a short time, but to go from hopeful and faithful to complete anarchists was drastic and unlikely.
Chat glanced over at her, seeing the gears in her mind turning and the worry on her face. He reached over and placed a hand on her knee.
“Tonight was weird, yeah. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't terrified too. It's horrifying seeing the city we fight so hard to protect turn on itself like that--"
"You're really not helping, you know."
"That's ‘cause you didn't let me finish," She snorted and gestured for him to continue. "Sure, all that's true, but we have each other, and that's honestly all that matters."
She rolled her eyes at him as she stood, leaning on his staff for support. "You suck at pep talks."
He grinned and squatted back down to her level. "My point is, bugaboo, that no matter what happens, I’ll be here to get through it with you. The world could be ending, and it would be ok as long as you're next to me."
She knew she was blushing and turned away as he chuckled.
"I should get home, Chat." She smiled at his wounded dog expression. "Some of us have curfews you know."
Chat Noir grabbed his hand and pressed a kiss to it. "Until we meet again My Lady." He turned away from her and vaulted off the Eifel. She watched him freefall and he spun in mid-air to face her, winking and giving her a two-finger salute.
He eventually disappeared behind buildings in the distance. Ladybug swung away, grinning stupidly at her partners' antics. While Chat had done his best to reassure her, doubt seeped into her mind. It didn't seem normal for the people of Paris to have that sort of reaction.
What also wasn’t normal was the pair of glowing red eyes watching her from down below as she made her way home.

So I this are just a bunch of texts that I sent my cousin and I thought why not post it on Tumblr as well!
Please do not take this seriously this is just some really bad comedy. Hope you enjoy. (Also this does have swear words and I mean a lot of swear words so you have been warned.)
Ok I haven’t edit this at all so sorry for my grammar and sorry if this doesn’t make sense
So a new MLB episode came out and it’s a special? Idk to be honest but here are my thoughts cause I want you to watch it! So there is a fucking new intro! It reminds me of the old Barbie movies intros not gonna lie but I guess it’s kinda cool.
Ok so their flying abilities or powers or whatever look really weird and I don’t like them. Alya showing the camera back and forth gave me a headache.
Ok but Ladybugs knowing about roses and their meanings gives me fanfic vibes not gonna lie. Chat trying his best too whoo Ladybug and respecting their boundaries (which she made by the way) freaking adorable not gonna lie. Chat being flustered fuck I just realized how much I missed him. Ugh Ladybug’s soft look and as soon as she leaves Chat’s soft look fuck they are adorable omg. Ok Chat saying that he needs to give himself some flowers cause he is amazing. 100% agree 10/10 you deserve it. TREAT YO SELF!
Ugh definitely did not miss Marinette’s obsession with Adrien omg. She’s really trying to lie to tikki bro you’re with her all the time. You can’t lie to her plus she’s been alive since the beginning of the universe and you’re telling me you are honestly trying to lie to her. God damnit Marinette you are such a dumbass.
LMAO THE STUDENT FILM OH MY FUCKING GOD!! THAT’S SO FUNNY!
God damn I saw on tumblr people comparing Draco to Chloe and I’m like bro Draco is a meme and a great character. Chloe is a bitch who is so fucking annoying.
OMG THE TEACHER IS PREGNANT ALL SHE HAD TO SAY WAS I HAVE MEDICAL EXAMS AND I KNEW!!! FUCKKKK YESSSS A RED HEADED BABY!!!
Can you imagine there is a whole episode where the class has to take care of the baby (for whatever reason) and all of them freaking out cause this baby is too precious and Alya coming in and saving the day and being like guys calm down. It’s all good. Nino fucking going soft trying to help Alya as best as he can. Marinette and Adrien never doing this before so both of them are super flustered and nervous! God I WOULD LITERALLY KILL FOR THAT EPISODE NOW HOLY SHIT!!!
Ok damn Kim really ain’t holding back like chill dude. He really just told the principal that the science teacher isn’t cool. You tell that to your friends not the fucking principal. You dumbass.
LILA IS HERE FUCK!!! God not only do I have to deal with Chloe’s bullshit but Lila’s too omg. Ok idk if it’s the website that I’m watching it in but their voices sound weird and I hope it’s just the website and not the actual episode.
Marinette shut the fuck up ADRIEN WAS TALKING BITCH!!! YOU INTERRUPTED HIM!!! Lmao nice save Marinette talking about the film to distract everyone from the fact that you like Adrien. GOD DAMNIT ADRIEN’S SOFT LOOK FUCK!!! HE LOVES HER SO MUCH BUT HE DOESN'T KNOW IT YET OMG!!! GOD DAMN!!! Lmao Lila’s face! Yeah fuck you Lila! Bitchass!
So Marinette is telling everyone that she is over Adrien. Alya isn’t falling for this bullshit! Love that. Marinette, why are you lying just ask them to help you move on. Like I can see the effort but I don’t understand why you are lying about it if you aren’t completely over him. Like bruh. ALEX REALLY SAID “No kidding” to when Marinette said that she was acting crazy. YES ALEX QUEEN! CALL HER OUT! Marinette saying that she just wants to be friends with him and not in love with him. (ARE WE FINALLY GETTING THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAT WE ALL DESERVE HOLY SHIT IM LIVING!) Nope nvm she’s still on her bullshit. Did Alya just say that if Marinette will be ok with her and Adrien going to New York together because it may be too romantic. Like Bitch YOU GUYS LIVE IN PARIS! I'M SURE SHE WILL BE FINE!
FUCK YOU GABRIEL!! DIDN’T MISS YOU AT ALL YOU FUNKY ASS BITCH!!!
BRUH ANOTHER MIRACULOUS FOR REAL!!!
DAMN! Lmao Marinette trying to look tough that’s so funny to me! Who you trying to scare bitch cause you ain’t fooling anyone. Bruh Gabriel really friendzoned Marinette for Adrien lmao! Omg I love that. Fuck. I hate Gabriel so much.
I DIDN’T KNOW KIGMA WAS GOING TO BE IN THIS EPISODE!! YAY! EW WTF DID SHE JUST KISS HIM! ARE YOU KIDDING! WAIT WHEN DID THEY GET TOGETHER!! WTF! I DON’T REMEMBER THIS!
Marinette you are so annoying. Where’s Ladybug?! SHE’S SO MUCH BETTER! HOLY SHIT IT’S LADYBUG! OK BUT THAT SCENERY LOOKS SO ROMANTIC! Wait yeah both of them are going to New York like who is going to protect the city?! Oh shit nvm I’m a dumbass hawk moth is going too. Lmao! I’m an idiot! Ok BUT THAT WEIRD BUTTON THING IS ADORABLE OMG!!! AWWW! LIKE WTF!! I WANT ONE! BRUH HOW CAN SHE NOT LIKE CHAT NOIR WTF IS WRONG WITH HER!!! GODAMNIT!
Gabriel really said Surprise bitch to Adrien lmao. Damn poor Gorilla. I can’t believe he still doesn’t have a fucking name godamnit. Lmao I love plagg. Ew god damnit fuck you GABRIEL!
OMG LUKAAAAA! Marinette fucking date him already wtf. He is literally biking your stupid ass to catch up to the bus. GOD LUKA DESERVES BETTER! Marinette you always fucking ruin the moment fuck you. Fuck you. AGAIN LUKA DESERVES BETTER! Luka honey no don’t look at her like that you deserve better. Flashback to the perks of being a wallflower quote, “We accept the love we think we deserve” FUCK YOU BRAIN WHY YOU DO ME LIKE THIS!!
ALYA IS A TRUE FRIEND!!! Bro my friends would be laughing their ass off and making funny faces at the window instead of asking the teachers to stop the bus. HE WAS CARRYING HER SUITCASE TOO OMG! BRO LUKA HAS SOME STRONG ASS LEGS LIKE DAMN!!! Luka then says, “You know what’s important Marinette, that this trip gives you some clarity.” PLEASE GOD THAT SHE FALLS FOR CAT NOIR!!! PLEASE THAT SHE STARTS LIKING HIM!!! PLEASE! BITCH WHY KISS HIM ON THE CHEEK OMG WHY?! He likes you and you decide to kiss him on the cheek. Bro you are just making him fall for you more. Goddammit you are an idiot.
Bruh one look at Adrien and she becomes a tomato god damn. Am I being hard on Marinette cause she reminds me of me. NO WTF!!! Shut up! (At least I’m not a stalker or someone who gets obsessed with my crush in obnoxious ways.)
FUCK YOU CHLOE WE DIDNT WANT YOU TO COME YOU STUPID HOEEE!!!
I JUST REALIZED THIS IS A MOVIE!!! 12 minutes in and I just realized this is a movie. I AM AN IDIOT!!! God I’m so dumb lol. Ok this animation not gonna lie is kinda good.
He really yelled at Marinette in front of everybody in a plane huh. That’s so funny. Also he sounded like such a jock like wtf was that. Lmao Alya and Nino just looking at them like yessss our ship!!! (Alya and Nino are such a mood) This movie is literally like a fucking fan fiction. Adrien, “Oh yeah you’re sitting next to me!” Marinette fucking panicking. Omg this is literally a fanfic. I can’t! I love this omg. I LOVE ALYA SO MUCH OMG!!! Did Marinette just call Adrien her husband. YOU’RE LIKE 14 SHUT UP!!! PLEASE!!! How can you confuse husband with friend. Ok this just confirms that Marinette constantly daydreams to herself and tells herself that Adrien is her husband. Girl, GIRL YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HIM VERY WELL. SHE’S NOT EVEN IN LOVE SHE’S JUST FASCINATED WITH THE IDEA OF HIM. Ugh this is why I don’t like the idea of Marinette and Adrien or Ladybug and Adrien being together. Like she barely knows him and she counts that as love. Jesus. Lmao Gorilla has and will always ship Marinette and Adrien together. You can not change my mind.
Brooo if Marinette had a penis she would definitely have gotten a boner when Adrien fell on her. WHY IS MARINETTE LIKE THIS?! (Ok yes if my crush not that I have one but if I did I would probably do all the shit she is doing but I wouldn’t run away I would fucking just be in shock and freeze. Probably idk. THIS IS GIVING ME TO MUCH SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ACT NORMAL FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE.) Did Alya just say that “New York is the most romantic place in the world!” AGAIN YOU LIVE IN PARIS!!! OH SHIT NVM. I paused it too soon. She continues by saying, “After Paris obviously.” Ok my bad. Ok are we talking about the same New York cause New York isn’t that romantic. Then again what do I know. Marinette FUCK YOU!!! YOU COULD HAVE SAT WITH ADRIEN AND NOW YOU HAVE TO SIT WITH THE FUCKING PRINCIPLE. Lmao this is giving me fucking Spider-Man Far From Home flashbacks. Bro Adrien looks so disappointed. FUCK YOU MARINETTE! Bro gorilla is such a mood. Putting a 10 for both having a fear of flying and for needing relaxation. Wait why doesn’t he have eyebrows? I just realized that. I mean I knew but like I didn’t realize idk if that makes sense.
Dude the principal sleeping on Marinette THAT HAPPENED IN FAR FROM HOME!!! Wait a damn minute in Far From Home Peter lives in New York and goes somewhere in Europe (I forgot where) AND MARINETTE LIVES IN FRANCE AND SHE GOES TO NEW YORK!!! Not only that but these are both superhero movies and they are both in love with someone except here Marinette is trying to get over Adrien while Peter Parker was trying to win over MJ. OK SOMEONE ON THE CREATIVE TEAM LITERALLY WATCHED FAR FROM HOME AND SAID YES LET’S DO THIS BUT THE OPPOSITE. I CAN’T THIS IS SO FUNNY!
AWWWW Alya and Nino sleeping on each other IS EVERYTHING!!! I SHIP THEM SO MUCH!!! IVAN AND MYLENE TOO!!! THEY REALLY WANT TO KILL ME HUH!? WAIT ROSE AND JUELKA FUCK YESSS THE GAYS ARE WINNING!!! MY MULTISHIPPER HEART CAN’T TAKE THIS MUCH POWER ALL IN A MATTER OF SECONDS!!! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!!
Dude I literally thought she said shit for a second I WAS LIKE WHAT?! But she said shoot. I really hope that’s not toilet water on her shirt. MARINETTE YOU HAVE A NAPKIN? OR TOILET PAPER ON YOUR HAIR?! GET THAT SHIT OUT OF THERE?!
Awww the sunset is so pretty. And Adrien is going to come in 3 2 1. Right on time. Adrien, “It's beautiful isn’t it?” I’m expecting Marinette to say, “Yeah but so are you.” and immediately regretting afterwards. Nvm she trips on him instead. Should have seen that coming. Ok now they are looking out the window again. This frame would be so cute if she didn’t have that stupid Toilet paper in her hair. Bruh Adrien just stands next to her and doesn’t even mention the Toilet paper on her hair. Adrien be like, “Yup just me and my fashionista friend Marinette looking at the window. Oh she has a piece of toilet paper in her hair. Damn must be a new trend I don’t know about. That’s kinda sus cause I am a model but whatever she knows more about fashion then I do so it’s all good.” (Not an actual quote.) Damn Alya and Nino ship them so much. Ok but what a mood!
Adrien says, “You're always willing to take a chance on something or someone even when no one else is.” Yeah bruh it’s because she is ladybug, I mean come on how do you not realize. Adrien really smirked at her whole shit! Adrien continues by saying, “You got something Marinette.” Marinette asks, “Something?” WAIT HOLD UP ISN’T HE DATING KAGAMI!!! WAIT IS MARINETTE A HOMEWRECKER!!! I’m kidding. Ok not really. Wait is Adrien a cheater like what?! Adrien continues by saying, “Yeah there in your hair.” He grabs the fucking piece of toilet paper. I LITERALLY FORGOT IT WAS THERE AND I BURST OUT LAUGHING!!! GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
Alya is a mood, “I can’t decide if they are the cutest people I know or the most embarrassing.” Literally me whenever I watch Miraculous ladybug. Also this literally sounds like something fanfic Alya would say. Not canon Alya. But I really love how they let Alya say that. Good call team! Omg Nino continues with, “Yeah I love Adrien but he is like a baby chick that just started cracking out of his egg he has a hard time understanding the signals people send them.” THIS LITERALLY SOUNDS LIKE A FANFIC AND I LOVE IT!!! OMG!!! I LOVE OPERATION NEW YORK OMG!!! YESSSSSSSS!!! ALYA AND NINO ARE LITERALLY OUR SAVIORS!!! GOD DAMN I LOVE THEM!!! ADRIEN HUGGED HER AWWWWW!!! I LOVE HIM!
THERE’S ANOTHER SUPER VILLAIN WTF!!! He really wants to kill the people huh. I mean he must be pure evil cause he literally is tearing the airplane apart. He really said: There's tons of people in this airplane huh. Welp I really need this technology so I guess they have to die!
DUDE WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GIRL? I can’t tell if she is a robot or a superhero! MAYBE BOTH!!! ALYA IS SUCH A SUPERHERO NERD I LOVE HER!!! OK this other girl superhero is literally captain marvel. She’s not Majestia (idk if that’s how you spell it) nah she’s captain marvel. LMAO WHEN CAPTAIN MARVEL MAKES AN APPEARANCE IN THE MLB MOVIE AND DOESN’T HAVE THE AUDACITY TO HELP OUT PETER PARKER IN HIS FIELD TRIP!! DAMN!!! SHE REALLY SAID FUCK YOU PETER! MLB FANDOM NEEDS ME MORE THAT YOU DO!! LIKE GURL PETER IS HAVING AN EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN CAUSE HIS 3rd father figure died!!! Then again she is saving an airplane fool of people but I’m sure you could have made a quick stop to give Peter some advice but whatever.
God I hate the principal.
CAPTAIN MARVEL REALLY SAID I HAVE TO SAVE MY ROBOT WIFE FROM THAT BOMB!! And she fucking blew the bomb away from her face. DUDE THERE IS SO MANY NEW SUPERHEROES HOLY CRAP!!! Ok including the Captain Marvel and the robot there’s 2 more but that’s more than Paris soooooo. WAIT CAPTAIN MARVEL JUST CALLED HER ROBOT DARLING!!! I was joking, I didn’t think they were together. OK I SHIP IT! Captain Marvel, “Are you alright darling?” (Giving me Spinderella and Netasha vibes not gonna lie) STOPPED IT TOO SOON!!! ROBOT JUST CALLED CAPTAIN MARVEL HER MOTHER!!! ABORT ABORT SHIP!!! I regret making all the comments that I just have made. So ignore them. I no longer ship them. Aw they have such a quote MOTHER AND DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP!!! They are hugging each other. Adorable.
Bruh Adrien and Marinette are talking openly to plagg and tikki like could you guys be more obvious. Like shut up.
So apparently there’s a superhero for everything in USA. Um I wish if there was USA wouldn’t be as shitty as it is now.
I love Nino and Alya, that's all I’m going to say.
Also the superheros have a code word for the French students and it’s literally ‘the little croissants’ I LOVE THAT OMG!!! WHO CAME UP WITH THAT CODE CAUSE I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!”
Ok turns out Robot girl can actually turn into a regular girl. SO THAT’S COOL!
How is it possible that Adrien and Marinette can’t figure out how the doors work like what?! Ok why the fuck is Adrien constantly catching Marinette every time she falls. Like he isn’t even close to her and he fucking races and catches her. Right he obviously doesn’t like her. Yup I definitely believe that bullshit.
Lmao the robot girl took one look at dumbass Marinette and stupidass Adrien and said, “Those 2 are made for each other.” That’s so funny. Ok robot girl is friends with a girl that has some weird ass earrings (dare I say lesbian). And they both are in school so I’m pretty sure they are the same age. SO I SHIP THEM!!! Grumpy girlfriend and super happy robot girlfriend. ADORABLE!
Lmao they are already going to a party bruh. They just got off of a plane and they almost died. And you’re telling me that they aren’t slightly jet lagged or even a little tired. Bruh come on.
DAMN SABRINA IS GONNA GET A LOVE INTEREST OKKKKKKKK!!! He literally winked at her and she went bright red. DAMN GURL GET IT!!! CHLOE FUCK OFF!!! SABRINA IS GONNA GO FLIRT WITH THE GUY AND NOT BE YOUR STUPID ASSISTANT!!! FUCK YOU!!! GOD DAMNIT CHLOE, SABRINA, MARINETTE AND ALYA ARE ROOMATES BRUHHHHH!!! (And they were roommates- OH MY GOD THEY WERE ROOMMATES NOT NOW BRAIN PLEASE)
Bro the teacher looks at the hallway and nods cause she notices that all the lights are off in the room and no one is talking and she leaves. And immediately all the doors open and everyone is sneaking off to the party. BROOO THIS REMINDS ME OF NHI LOL!!! So the teacher suddenly pops out and asks what’s that noise and they all go into different rooms. The teacher doesn’t notice. And of course Marinette goes into the room with Adrien but on accident, and for a second I thought she was touching his pee pee but no she was just touching his lower stomach lol. They both look at each other and Marinette gets flustered and Adrien smiles softly at her. And she immediately gets away from him and they end up in the same room as ROBOT GIRL AND HER LESBIAN GIRLFRIEND!!! Robot girl is shipping them so hard while her girlfriend is glaring at them.
HER GIRLFRIEND CAN PLAY GUITAR YESSSSS!!!
SABRINA GO TO THE PARTY PLEASE!!! DITCH CHLOE!!! FLIRT WITH THE AMERICAN!!! THE AMERICAN IS FUCKING STANDING OUTSIDE THE WINDOW!!! WAITING FOR HER OMG!!! He takes her hand AND TAKES HER TO THE ROOF PARTY!!! FUCK I SHIP THEM SO HARD!!!
Omg the dialogue in this movie is fucking amazing. Marinette says, “Is it a bird?” Adrien, “Is it a plane?” Sabrina’s soon to be boyfriend, “No IT’S HOT DOG DAN!” Like bitch why is the hot dog cart flying like wtf?! Dude is this how French people see Americans because you know what?! THAT SOUNDS about right. If USA ever gets superhero’s we PROBABLY WOULD HAVE A SUPERHERO WHO SERVES FUCKING HOT DOGS!!! Damn this movie is pretty fucking realistic. The Americans are fucking thirsty for some hot dogs they literally run over Adrien and Marinette like damn ok yes a lot of Americans like hot dogs but we aren’t animals. Turns out the hot dogs are magical. ROSE LITERALLY GOT SUPER STRENGTH AND WAS ABLE TO LIFT UP IVAN!!! QUEEN!!! AW Sabrina got long ass hair like Rapunzel but it’s brown for some reason.
There’s 2 hot dogs left and Nino take initiative and pays for the hot dog and says, “Not a problem. My girl and I can have one and you 2 can have the other.” Damn this really is a fanfic huh. Then again I doubt a fanfic would have them sharing a fucking magical hot dog. Lol! This movie is nuts. They ate the hot dogs (nvm they took a bite of the hotdog and they dropped it on the floor) and they started floating. They grab hands and they are trying not to freak out.
Meanwhile ALYA AND NINO ALL THE FUCKING GET IS THESE HIGH PITCHED VOICES LIKE BRUH. Also Nino ships them so much omg! BRUH HOT DOG DAN EVEN SHIPS THEM! I mean he doesn’t say anything he just looks at them and smiles.
Omg Alya asked Robot’s girlfriend to set the mood with a song! And Robot’s girlfriend is like yeah sure thing. This movie is surreal.
THE SONG IS LITERALLY THE SONG THAT THEY DANCED TOO AT CHLOE’S PARTY OMG!!! I can’t believe I remembered that.
Bruh Adrien literally just repeated what I typed. HE JUST ASKED MARINETTE IF SHE COULD DANCE WITH HIM!!! They are floating and the moon is shining bright on them (Nice job Yue; setting the scene for us I see) and he extends his hand. She starts floating backwards cause she’s freaking out (What a surprise 😒). He grabs her hand and brings her closer to him. WHAT FANFIC AUTHOR WAS ABLE TO GET A FUCKING HIGH BUDGET TO MAKE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE THIS DOESNT FEEL LIKE AN MLB EPISODE!!!
ALSO Marinette is looking at Adrien in a way that makes her look like a Tim burton cartoon character lol. SHE FINALLY GIVES IN AND DANCES WITH HIM IN FRONT OF THE MOON!!! (They aren’t even dancing to be honest they are literally just hugging each other really closely and spinning) BUT ITS ADORABLE SO I FORGIVE THEM!
Lmao they zoom out of the roof party and you just see in the fucking corner Kim and some other dude having a push-up contest. They showed that in the beginning when Alya, Nino, Marinette and Adrien were entering the party. I just wasn’t expecting that in this whole time Kim and the other guy still continued the push-up contest omg. (This is the first 29 minutes and my hand is tired sooo I’m not gonna write anymore)
If anyone wants me to continue I will but I doubt anybody is going to see this post so yeah! Anyway if someone actually read this PROPS TO YOU DUDE!!! HOPE I DIDNT WASTE YOUR TIME!!! HAVE A GOOD YEAR!!!
Edit: I think Robot girl and girl with weird earrings are sisters soooooo I don’t ship them anymore. (I’m honestly really confused are they siblings or not?!)

Ok so the scene where Chat quits in the sewer gave me feels for a moment ngl. Everything else just felt like a bad and boring crossover fanfic with a fandom headcanon thrown in. Reading about Alya reminded me of those bashing fics where she just doesn’t know when.to.quit.it.
I get the feels. Really, I do. It’s just that I personally felt nothing for a few reasons.
One is the rehash (”Mayura” VS “Miraculous New York”):
Tumblr media
Two is the fact of Chat quitting considering the circumstances:
Ladybug was upset with Chat Noir for coming to New York without telling her, and rightfully so, but by having other events happen on top of it, it lessens that impact because suddenly they have to focus on everything else, such as the "death” Chat caused and Paris being damaged. Ladybug’s anger was right from the beginning but now she has to turn her attention to other things and it becomes “we didn’t get back to Paris on time” and Ladybug feeling guilty (even though her kwami - useful as ever - didn’t know what to do in the situation) rather than having the lesson fall directly on Chat.
And look, it’s not that I don’t understand where Chat is coming from. He thinks quitting is the form of punishment he deserves for his actions, but think about what he’s doing here.
Because he wasn’t there, Paris got severely damaged, and instead of being ready to face Paris again to say, “I caused this, I’m sorry. I promised to watch over everyone and I failed,” he chose to drop the identity that took the heat for all the mistakes (not even showing Ladybug who he was in the process; he could’ve kept his eyes closed so he didn’t see her civilian self) and bail. Rather than trying to make up for the mistakes he made (and maybe talk to her about giving up his miraculous afterwards), he leaves Ladybug to deal with the fallout of his actions. Adrien Agreste doesn’t have to deal with anything, but Chat Noir would’ve and he couldn’t even face her.
In essence, he’s trying to amend his mistake with the same mistake that got him in trouble in the first place. His mistake was making a decision without Ladybug to go to New York, which meant that Paris didn’t have a Chat Noir to try and protect it. Now, after he’s been criticized, he makes another decision without Ladybug to renounce Plagg and give up his miraculous, which meant that New York didn’t have a Chat Noir to protect it when Techno Pirate was still out and about.
He claims to trust her. He claims that she’s perfect. He claims that they’re a team and they get through stuff together.
But he didn’t trust her enough to believe that she’d be understanding about him saying that he’s being forced to go somewhere. He was afraid that his “perfect Ladybug” would be mad/disappointed if he told her that he had his own obligations to deal. He believed that not telling her was better simply because she didn’t know and thus couldn’t judge him (hi, “Copycat,” nice to see you again).
The show even makes a joke about Sparrow commenting on them being a team (when Ladybug and Chat Noir are mid-argument) without realizing or acknowledging that it’s not a joke and they’re only a team in the loosest sense of the word.
Three is the set-up in terms of Ladybug herself:
Here you have Chat Noir finally being called out for doing something wrong, but a quick look at the fandom will see a bunch of salt being thrown at both Ladybug and Marinette. The special does well enough at not blaming her at first, but then it equates Ladybug and Chat as one (by having Knightowl call both of them out and Jessica later refers to “them” when talking about Aeon getting de-activated) and also had Marinette be the one to insist that Adrien get to go to New York, making her inadvertently at fault (and easy to blame in the eyes of a fandom) even if it’s Chat’s for not telling her.
(there’s also the scene with Alya shouting at Marinette - which makes an obvious reference to how Marinette felt about Chat leaving - and the lowkey implications of supporting dependency problems)
You can argue that Ladybug shouldn’t be shouting at Chat mid-battle, but she realized that he lied to her mid-battle because that’s when she saw him, and I would argue that Chat should be more capable of focusing when we’re three seasons in. He needs to take fighting more seriously and he only seems to do it when the stakes are at their worst, as he’s normally used to bantering or shouting off puns.
Also, think about this from Ladybug’s perspective. People can say however they want about how sAd Chat Noir’s home life is but Ladybug doesn’t know any of that.
Meanwhile, the special comes after “Miracle Queen,” shown by the Lukanette+Adrimi interaction and the Miracle Box in the intro. It’s easy to point at “Miracle Queen” and yell about how Marinette is supposed to be moved on, but focusing on only that means missing a crucial detail:
Master Fu is gone. Ladybug is on her own and has the responsibility of being guardian. She has a lot of weight on her shoulders and Chat Noir is the only one she has left. He’s the only one she has who she can talk about miraculous-related problems, and he knows that.
She trusted him. They were officially “friends” now (because Chat himself put the label on it) and she believed that they were at a point in their relationship where he would trust her with his problems like she trusted him with hers.
And he didn’t. He betrayed Ladybug’s trust.
But because he gave up his miraculous (which illicits as much sympathy from the audience as possible) and left Marinette is such a state of shock and loneliness, he doesn’t have to deal with earning her trust back. He gets a hug immediately upon returning with Ladybug essentially telling him never to leave her again.
If this is the guy that Ladybug can’t imagine being without, it’s for no other reason than he’s the only partner she has, and a subpar partner can be better than none at all if only because it means not having to be alone.

Felix July: Felix is Chat Noir (Clash of Noir AU)
I figured I’ll do a mix of my aus for Felix. Just for variation and inspiration. This one features Felix from the Clash of Noir AU.
He remembered what day it was just in time to start kicking himself for losing track.
All the talk and rumors and gossip had gone over his head. All the planning and excitement left him too busy with trying to keep track of his civilian tasks AND his self appointed duty of protecting Marinette and judging Adrien Agreste to actually consider just what said planning and excitement was supposed to be for.
It wasn’t until he happened to see Tikki in Chloe’s hands that he stopped and took notice of the world around him.
Including the foreign but somewhat familiar young man Chloe presented the doll to as a “gift”.
Prince Ali.
Felix had enough time to curse his own lapse before the doors burst open and another familiar but much less pleasant figure entered with a growing army of singing minions at her command.
Princess Fragrance.
Dammit.
This was the day Rose became an akuma—courtesy of Chloe Bourgeois, of course. And there was little doubt that the visiting Prince of Achu was her intended target.
The officials were attempting to respond to the intrusion and actually tried to question the clearly not-normal girl in what had to be the worst decision they could make. Already aware of what was going on and what would come of that, Felix charged for Ali and dragged the boy off and around a corner while everyone else was still distracted.
“Hey!”
Not that they were distracted for long, but just long enough for him to get a head start was more than enough.
He needed to get Tikki back to Marinette! And unfortunately, the direct object of the akuma’s infatuation happened to be attached to her.
Last time, he had been forced to face Princess Fragrance alone for a time, desperately stalling and trying to buy Ladybug time to arrive on the scene while protecting the Prince and getting him to safety. He hadn’t understood why it had taken her so long to show, but seeing Tikki in the Prince’s possession was a pretty good indicator of what must have happened in his original version of events.
If Chloe and then Prince Ali had Tikki, Marinette couldn’t transform.
That meant Chat Noir would be on his own this time as well.
And Marinette would be defenseless.
While he wanted the chance to see his replacement in action to observe how well he can manage as the new Black Cat, the situation was far from the best choice as a test.
He wanted to test Adrien. But not while Marinette would be at risk.
Because if Tikki was here, Marinette no doubt knew it and was likely on her way—assuming she wasn’t already somewhere within this blasted hotel. And with the akuma here as well…
Victory was still possible if Chat Noir fell.
But not without Ladybug.
He needed to get Tikki to Marinette.
“Where are we going?”
He also needed to do something about the Prince.
With a quick turn and some fast thinking, he pulled Ali with him into a side room that led to the laundry room and slammed the door behind them. Fortunately, they were far enough ahead that anyone following them would not have seen where they went off to.
“Do you know anything about what is happening in Paris right now?”
Ali blinked. “Do you mean the Mayor’s plans for sending the city’s trash out into space?”
“Wait—what?” Felix shook his head. That wasn’t important. “Nevermind that. No. I mean about Hawk Moth and the regular akuma attacks.”
The other boy simpered. “I had heard…something to that affect. But those were just normal criminals, weren’t they?”
Oh boy.
“No. No, they were not. Akumas are victims taken over and granted powers by a specific super-villain. And that green-skinned girl chasing after you happens to be one.”
Ali paled. “Oh.”
“Until Ladybug stops her and purifies the thing controlling her, that akuma is going to keep hunting you down—all over the city if she has to.”
“So…what should we do?” Ali asked. “Should I give myself up? Would that make her stop?”
Felix stared at him dryly. “No. Akumas don’t stop.”
That just made the Prince pale even more. “Oh.”
But this gave him an idea.
Within minutes and with the aid of a couple of hand towels, Felix and Ali both had cloth face masks. This doubled both for granting them at least some limited protection from the perfume as well as obscuring their features.
“Brilliant! This will make it more difficult to determine who I am!” Ali exclaimed.
“Well, sort of,” Felix noted. “You’ll have to do something about the jacket or she’ll pick you out in a crowd regardless.”
The Prince nodded in agreement and removed the jacket. A faded hoodie did well in obscuring Prince Ali’s features and making him less noticeable as the royal figure he was known to be.
To Felix’s relief, he also removed the “toy” as well. Felix silently set the jacket aside with Tikki inside. First chance he got, he’d have to get Tikki and track down Marinette. But for now…
“There is a back entrance out of the hotel.” Felix explained. “Going on foot will be slower than a car, but it will also mean more places to hide and more routes to take. You’ll be harder to track that way. But you need to leave now before she blocks off all the exits.”
“You’re not coming?” Ali asked, concerned.
Felix hesitated.
“I have…something I need to do. There’s someone I have to find.”
For royalty, the Prince was rather kind as he merely smiled at his savior. “Then I wish you well.”
And with that, he was gone.
Felix sorely wished he could have gone with him, if only to escape this danger.
But…
His eyes fell on the pink kwami who stared at him in clear distrust.
The things he did for his Lady…
______________________________
It wasn’t worth it some days, Felix moaned to himself internally. It just wasn’t.
Finding Marinette had somehow been the easy part. But Tikki had been sick somehow, and Marinette needed to take her to a healer.
In the meantime, Felix was trapped in a hotel room with Chat Noir, the head butler, and Chloe herself—who as part of some payback for her earlier cruelty had been the victim of a particular blast of Rose’s perfume. One that left her smelling rancid in a way that no one could stand for long.
Even worse in that she was refusing to be by herself, insisting on staying glued to Chat Noir’s side for lack of Ladybug present in the silly belief that the spotted heroine will be arriving soon. Chat clearly was not having an easy time of it. But neither were Felix nor Jean, as the room they were holed up in was one of the smaller versions for cheaper guests. There was space for them all, but Chloe’s reek was strong enough to permeate the room as easily as a scented candle.
Nobody was happy about this.
Felix, for his part, was staying near the door. Partly for the sake of distance from Chloe, but also to offer an added buffer against anyone who may try to burst in. Not that he would do much good compared to Chat Noir, but they were reaching a point where the hero would be needed. Once all the noise outside and sound of footsteps of the various minions faded, he would suggest Chat leave and go to assist Ladybug. Surely, Marinette would have gotten Tikki healed by now. It’s been about how long it took last time, near as he could figure.
All he had to do was just bar the door, keep any entrances closed, sit tight, and wait this out—
“I can’t take the stench anymore!”
“Hey!”
“I got the window open!”
Felix froze.
“NO!”
“Uh oh!”
“My prince~!”
OF ALL THE IDIOTIC—
Within an instant, Chat Noir foiled all of Felix’s carefully laid plans by opening the window. One that led to a perfectly placed balcony in full view of the growing army of singing minions. And sure enough, having been alerted as to which room they were in, Princess Fragrance was just waiting for an opportunity like this—one that Chat Noir in all his idiocy just handed her!
She let loose a cloud of perfume that engulfed Chat, Chloe, and Jean within seconds. Felix, fortunately, being far back enough by hanging near the door still, was just out of reach of the immediate cloud. Not to mention that of the four of them, he was the only one still wearing the face mask to offer at least some protection.
Enough for him to stave off the effects of the perfume if he didn’t get too close. But not enough to stave off actual attacks from the akuma or her ever increasing multitude of servants.
“Now, Kitty! Do be a dear and bring my Prince to me!”
Case in point.
“Yes, your hi~ghness~!”
Felix wanted to scream.
Oh, he very much wanted to scream.
There was no time for screaming though, as he slammed the door open and bolted back down the hallway and away from the akuma and her growing entourage.
Luckily and unluckily, Chat Noir gave chase. Still stupidly singing out pleas for Felix to return and tell the Princess where her Prince was.
Nope. Nope. He was not having any of that today. Hell, as far as he was concerned, his daily requirement of good deeds was officially met for the day. He was done.
Marinette had Tikki back and Ladybug would be making an appearance soon enough.
But…
Would she be able to defeat Princess Fragrance alone from this point?
He hesitated, which was just enough to allow his replacement to catch up to him.
“I found you~!”
But Felix had been Chat Noir longer.
And he had been training a heck of a lot harder.
Granted, he’d been preparing himself for the eventual Clash with Adrien over the mantle rather than because the other boy became an akuma’s minion, but the tricks he’d learned and strength he’d built were still just as useful in the moment.
And he wouldn’t deny there was at least some satisfaction in the sensation of his leg slamming into the other boy’s chest and sending him into a wall. Before he could even attempt to get up, a shelf lost it’s connection to the wall on one side, leading to several rather heavy items slipping off the edge and landing right on Chat’s head.
Perhaps he had put a bit of his still remaining bad luck energy into that kick. Or perhaps it was Adrien’s own bad luck at play. Regardless, Felix was a mix of grateful and amused at the way events played out.
Cautiously, he approached the other boy. It might have been a trick after all. But several moments passed and Felix confirmed that yes, Chat was knocked out.
Now would be a perfect time to escape. Let Ladybug figure things out. Let events unfold without his interference. Let things continue as they should.
And yet…
The Ring seemed to gleam, as if drawing him to it. And it quite possibly was. He could feel the energy between them. He could sense the connection. He still carried a piece of Plagg’s power within him, after all.
It was an opportunity. He could pass it up. He should pass it up.
He grit his teeth in agitation.
“To hell with it.”
After all the torment he’d suffered under the Ring’s curse, he couldn’t help but feel insulted at how easy the Ring was removed from Adrien’s hand. Maybe it was because the curse had only been his? Maybe he had the worst of it since he’d been the one to feel its full effects? Or maybe Adrien was just that lucky?
Still, within seconds, he had the Ring settled in the palm of his hand and a green light changed Chat Noir into a very unconscious Adrien Agreste. Not a shock to Felix, but it was still unsettling.
Given the way Plagg was staring up at him, he must have felt similarly.
“Felix.”
“Plagg.”
The kwami hesitated. “Are you really going to initiate the Clash like this?”
He paused. It would be very easy to. With Adrien unconscious and off guard, Felix would win easily. There would be no conflict, no contest from there and Felix would be free to find an appropriate candidate for his mantle in peace.
But that wasn’t why he was here, he reminded himself.
“Not yet.”
He couldn’t help the shudder.
“I don’t want it.”
Not like this.
Never again, if he could help it.
“I’m only going to be a temporary substitute for now. Just for this crisis. After that, I’ll let him have it back.”
For now, went unsaid.
Plagg looked uncertain. “You know it’s not yours anymore. Not after what you did.”
“It’s still partly mine.” Felix replied. “And that means I have to make sure it ends up with the right person.”
That got the kwami’s attention. “That’s what you’re doing?”
Felix didn’t respond. It should already have been clear that he wasn’t fit to bear the Ring. He never had been.
But if nothing else, he would be damned sure that whatever Chat Noir ended up existing in this world wouldn’t be the same. Even if that meant taking it away from Adrien and as far away from anyone bearing the Agreste name as possible.
“You can’t just decide that.”
“Actually, I can.” Felix replied. And the bad luck energies that continued to exist in his body sparked as if in agreement. “Part of your power is still with me. Until the Clash…I have time to decide who I want to replace me.”
“You’ve made your share of mistakes.” Plagg hissed. “Adrien isn’t you. He deserves a chance!”
“And he will have it. Until he proves himself—whether worthy or unworthy.”
Plagg gaped up at him in surprise.
“If he proves himself by my standards, I will step aside.” Felix stated. Not that he expected it, given what he had seen so far. But the boy still had potential nonetheless. And while foolish, he hadn’t shown himself capable of the same intentional betrayal Felix had.
“And if he doesn’t?”
“Then I will take the Ring and pass it on to someone who can.”
The part of him that hadn’t stopped screaming since feeling her body go cold in his arms was against it. But even that part of him was doing this for her just as much as the rest of him. He couldn’t forget her. Would never forget.
She would want him to give the boy a chance.
So he would.
However, right now, what they needed wasn’t a chance for Adrien.
But for Marinette.
For Marinette…
“Plagg. Transform me.”
Just for today, he would be Chat Noir.

Chapter 14
Ladybug ran into Chat Noir as she was leaving the bathroom.
“Did you see the—” Ladybug began but Chat cut her off with a crazy look in his eye.
“Yes, do you know where she is?”
“The akuma? She should be through the entrance if she hasn’t already made her way upstairs—”
“No! Not the akuma! Marinette!”
The conversation was brief and they were both running while talking, but Chat’s last comment made her skid to a stop. They were in the front entryway, which is where it seemed like Malady, the akuma, had entered.
“Why are you looking for Marinette?” Ladybug asked, trying to keep her voice level.
Chat looked flustered and his eyes were wild as he searched around the room and in the hallway where they had just come. “She was right here. I heard the akuma shout for her. I just need to make sure she’s safe.”
Ladybug grabbed Chat by his shoulders and turned him around to where he was face to face with her. “Listen to me. You worrying about her is not going to help you fight this akuma. I know it’s scary when someone we care about is being targeted, but this isn’t the first time this has happened to Marinette. She is going to be okay. I need you to focus.” Chat seemed to relax and his breathing leveled out as she spoke. “I have an idea. You need to get everyone out of the house. I’m going to find Marinette and stash her away somewhere safe, okay?” She tightened her grip on Chat shoulders and he looked up into her eyes. They were clearer and he seemed more in control and she knew he was getting back to normal. She let go of Chat and grabbed her yo-yo, touching the center black dot, and out popped an earpiece which Ladybug slipped into her ear, “Stay in touch. If you see the akuma, you need to stay safe and let me know right away.”
Chat had gotten his earpiece out of his baton and inserted it as well. “Same goes for you. Get Marinette out and come back fast.” Chat gently shook off Ladybug’s touch and ran up the stairs. Ladybug ran the opposite direction, hoping that Chat wouldn’t look back to see where she was going. She bolted out the back door where she had had a talk with Adrien mere hours before, although at this point it felt like a lifetime ago.
She ran a lap around the house, trying to see if she could spot the akuma. The only thing she noticed was some sort of green statues, scattered around the area. Producers, camera crews, even one of the “Mansion Moms” all turned green and frozen. “That must be what she does. She freezes people with something,” Ladybug whispered aloud. She touched the communicator in her ear and said louder, “Chat I don’t know how but she freezes people. I’m finding a lot of green statues.”
“I see some too. I think she’s been through here already.” Chat’s voice came through her communicator. “I found most of the girls huddled on the top floor. I’m moving them out a window now.”
Ladybug released a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Most of the girls were safe. She was almost tempted to ask which ones, but knew that naming them would take longer, and it was more important to get them all to safety.
“I’ve got Marinette at a secure location.” Ladybug responded, hoping enough time had passed that it would seem believable. “I’m headed back your way now.”
The quiet put Ladybug on edge. She didn’t have eyes on the akuma, and from what Chat said he didn’t either. So, where was she?
Another scream came from the back of the house, near where Marinette’s bedroom was and Ladybug rushed over. The girls were sliding down Marinette’s balcony on Chat’s baton, but the akuma was standing on the roof, laughing.
“Well done street rat. You found all of the girls for me.” The akuma, Malady, cackled. She had the same body shape as Sofia, and her hair was just as red as it was before, but it seemed that the red had bled onto the rest of her body. Her skin was the color of blood and the dress she wore, shorter than the one Sofia had worn to the cocktail party, were different shades of green, ranging from lime green to a forest green. She almost looked like Christmas if it wasn’t all so terrifying.  The thing that caught Ladybug’s eye though, was a shape like a long-rifled gun in her right hand, which was also green and red. Malady was flipping it around in her hand with all the confidence in the world.
While she was laughing, Chat had moved all of the girls to the base of the mansion, and they had begun to run. When Malady looked back down, she screamed, only finding Chat and Ladybug. Ladybug began spinning her yo-yo like a shield, protecting her and Chat.
“Who wants to bet that the akuma is in that gun looking thing?” Chat said with a slight smile on his face. Clearly knowing that everyone had been moved to safety brought back the normal Chat-the one who joked during battles.
“I’m not a betting woman, but I’d venture that you’re right.” Ladybug said with a smile of her own.
“We need to lure her away from here—”
“Already there, Kitty,” Ladybug said with a flick of her wrist. Malady had been shooting at the two of them with what looked like thorns? One had almost clipped Chat’s shoulder when Ladybug stood up and shouted, “Come on, Chat, Marinette is this way!” Then she turned and ran, knowing full-well that Chat would follow.
“So where are we going on our evening outing, milady?” Chat asked, keeping stride with her with ease.
“I thought a romantic walk to the Eiffel tower would be nice, what do you think?”
“I’ll follow you anywhere Bugaboo.” The look he gave her was so sweet she had to hit him to keep both him and herself concentrated.
“Where did you actually hide, Marinette?” Chat whispered as they ran. Malady was several yards behind them, but Ladybug still worried about her voice carrying.
“Later, Chat. I promise.”
They arrived at the Eiffel Tower in minutes, Malady was hot on their heels. Ladybug bent over and pretended to catch her breath when Malady leaped in her line of sight. She brought out her yo-yo and created a shield again.
“Where have you taken Marinette?” Malady asked. Her voice was more gravely than Sofia’s had been and she sounded ready to kill. “Is she up at the top of this pretty tower?”
Ladybug had opened her mouth to speak, when Chat beat her to it. “You’ll never find her!”
Malady began to laugh again, as a purple butterfly shape appeared over her face. She froze for a minute, listening, and Ladybug and Chat took that time to run towards the tower without being seen.
“What’s the plan, milady?” Chat asked as they ran.
“I’m working on it,” Ladybug replied through gritted teeth. It was too early to use her Lucky Charm, and she knew they would need to set up a trap, but that’s all the information she had and it wasn’t enough.
They both looked back as they heard Malady scream again. Clearly, she had looked up from talking with Hawkmoth and had discovered that the two superheroes had ran.
“I WILL HAVE YOUR MIRACULOUS FOR THIS!” She screamed in a way that sounded awfully like Sofia earlier.
Chat made a noise of recognition. “That’s Sofia.” Chat breathed.
“Yeah, I figured. She was looking for Marinette after that outburst earlier. It made sense.”
“But why Malady? That’s an odd name.”
Ladybug shot him a smile that was borderline evil. “You can ask her as you distract her for me.”
Chat rolled his eyes and pouted, “Why is it always me?” She almost believed him, but the excitement in his voice let her know that he wasn’t actually upset.
Ladybug leaned forward close enough to kiss him and flicked his bell. “Because I have all the luck.” With that, she ran to hide behind one of the pillars.
Chat didn’t miss a beat and turned towards the oncoming akuma, baton outstretched. Ladybug heard the sounds of fighting and Chat yelling various things, but Ladybug wasn’t paying attention to the noise, but was focusing on how the akuma reacted. She noticed that the thorns (they had to be thorns) bounced off of various surfaces, including Chat’s baton. That was important information, but she couldn’t figure out how it was helpful. She steeled herself and quickly said, “Lucky Charm,” feeling her internal clock begin to countdown the minutes left in her transformation.
She reached out and caught a wooden, polka dotted pizza peel from the sky. This particular one had a long handle, which would make it easier to manipulate. Ladybug turned her eyes back towards the fight, right when something happened. Chat was close enough to breathe on Malady and when he deflected the thorn with his baton, Malady screamed and backed up quickly. Ladybug didn’t fully understand what had happened, but Chat clearly had. He used his baton to push Malady back to the outskirts of the Eiffel Tower, almost knocking her in the Seine, before turning and running towards where she was hiding.
“I’ve figured it out! I know how to defeat her.” He stopped right in front of her and began laughing. “What in the world is that?”
“It’s a pizza peel.”
“Oh! Those long things that the people in pizza parlors use to move the pizzas in the oven? It has a name?”
“Of course it has a name!” Ladybug replied frustrated at his lack of focus. “What did you learn?”
“I learned that her name is ‘Malady’ because a ‘malady is a disease of the body’ and she said that ‘a broken heart is a disease that affects everyone’ and that makes sense since Sofia is a nurse.”
Ladybug couldn’t help but hit her head with her hand. “What did you learn about defeating the akuma?”
“Oh right! She can’t get hit with her own thorns. The one I just deflected almost touched her and she backed up screaming, twisting to where it wouldn’t.”
Suddenly the pizza peel in her hand made sense. She saw a bench near the road and Chat knew exactly what needed to be done.
“Chat, lead her to that bench!” He looked at her and looked at the bench she was pointing at and she saw the recognition in his eyes. That’s what she loved about working with him, he knew what she was thinking without her having to say it aloud.
“Understood, milady,” He said with a wink and rushed off to engage Malady in combat once more. She ran over towards the bench and used her yo-yo to balance the pizza peel on the top of the bench. She then jumped onto the banisters above the bench, positioned herself perfectly and waited, right as her earrings let out a beep. Was this the first or second beep? It took less than a minute for Chat to move Malady towards the trap, and her time limit was quickly pushed out of her mind.
“You have really good technique,” she heard Chat call out to Malady as he moved her even closer. “But you’re missing something important.”
“Oh? And what is that?” Malady asked as she inched closer. She was near the spot she needed to be and Ladybug moved into position.
“An amazingly beautiful teammate that always has a plan.” Chat called out with a smile. Malady laughed and took one step closer. The step that Ladybug needed. She jumped from the ceiling with a yell and landed right on the edge of the pizza peel. Malady turned and yelled in surprise, shooting towards Ladybug more on instinct. As the shot came towards Ladybug the flat part of the pizza peel shot up straight like a disconnected seesaw and Ladybug used the flat part to aim the thorn right for Malady. It all happened within seconds of Chat and Malady coming into view, and Malady never saw the thorn headed her way. She reached out a hand to stop it, but it was too late. She had been turned into one of her own green statues.
Ladybug jumped off the bench and landed next to Chat. “Would you like to do the honors, milady?”
Ladybug smiled and shook her head. “You know what, why don’t you do it? I never would have figured out my Lucky Charm if it wasn’t for you.” He looked slightly abashed at that, but gladly walked over towards the akuma and grabbed the gun from her hands. Now that she was looking at it, it looked more like a rose, with the flower being the tip where the thorns came out. Chat snapped it in half and Ladybug grabbed the akuma with her yo-yo before it could fly off.
“Bye bye, little butterfly,” She said as it flew off. She grabbed the pizza peel and threw it into the air. “Miraculous Ladybug!” As the magical ladybugs fixed all of the damage, Ladybug watched as Malady was transformed back into Sofia.
“What happened? Where am I?”
Ladybug walked up towards her and placed a hand gently on her shoulder. “You were akumatized by Hawkmoth. But it’s okay, everything’s been restored.” Sofia bent down and picked up the once akumatized object. It was a rose, slightly wilting and looking very sad on the street. At the sight of it, Sofia broke down crying and Ladybug knelt down next to her.
“What is it?” Ladybug asked, working to calm her down so she didn’t end up akumatized again.
“It’s the rose Adrien gave to me last week on the show. I was packing up all of my stuff, since I got sent home, and I reached to grab the rose. I guess it had a hidden thorn, because it poked me and I started bleeding. I—I became so angry and upset about getting sent home and the fact that Adrien kept Marinette, I just started crying. Then a voice was talking to me and I woke up here.”
Ladybug sat down next to her and pulled her a little closer. “It’s exactly those kind of feelings that Hawkmoth feeds off of. I’m very sorry that you got sent home, but I’m sure it wasn’t for the reason you think. Take it as a sign that Adrien wasn’t the one.” Sofia sniffled a little at that and clutched the rose a little tighter. “Hey, it’s okay to be sad about it. We just can’t let our negative emotions get the best of us.” Sofia looked up at Ladybug and she was able to see the girls she had befriended while in the house. “Think on the bright side, all of the boys are going to be fawning over you once the show airs.” Sofia let out a little giggle and Ladybug smiled.
“Thank you, Ladybug.” Sofia said as Ladybug stood up and looked over at Chat. He smiled gently at her as her earrings began to beep again.
You’re about to transform back,” Chat said while looking at Sofia. “Can you take her back? I’m sure you know the way,” He said with a smirk. She had to resist rolling her eyes at him. But they had to be careful what was said in front of Sofia.
“Yeah I can. Where are you going?” Ladybug asked as she reached down to help Sofia stand up.
“I have to go get Marinette and let her know that everything is safe again. Where did you hide her?” Ladybug stumbled slightly, suddenly remembering that she had hidden “Marinette” somewhere and she needed to come up with a place fast.
“Uhhhh she’s at her... parent’s house! Yes, I figured she’d be the safest there.” Ladybug said frantically. “Do you know where that is?” Ladybug asked, slightly hoping he would have forgotten.
“No, I know the way. Always a pleasure, Bugaboo!” Chat called as he raced off towards the Dupain-Cheng bakery.
Ladybug tried to control her breathing as she picked up Sofia and swung through the rooftops. She deposited Sofia at the front door of the mansion, wished her a good night, and bolted. She made it home right as her Papa was letting Chat in through the bakery entrance. Marinette landed on the balcony right as her transformation wore off.
“That was close!” Tikki said cheerfully as she came out of the suit. “Can we steal some cookies while we’re here?”
“Not now Tikki. Right now, I need you to unlock the door so I can slip in my room and pretend I’ve been here the whole time.”
“Right!” Tikki called as she phased through the door. The balcony door quickly opened, emitting Marinette and she rushed to turn the lights on right as her parents and Chat came through the trap door.
“We would have known if she was here,” Her Maman was saying as the three of them climbed the stairs. She let out a little scream of delight when she saw Marinette and engulfed her in a hug.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t come to say hi!” Marinette said as her Papa joined the hug too. “I just didn’t want to put you in danger of the akuma!”
“Oh Marinette,” Sabine sighed, “it would have been nice to know you were here!” she cooed as she petted Marinette’s hair gently.
“Chat Noir here nearly gave us a heart attack when he said that you were supposed to be here.” Tom added with a chuckle. “We are happy to see that you’re okay.”
“I’m so happy to see you too.” Marinette responded, savoring the hug a little longer. She heard someone slightly clear their throat from behind their family hug, and they all broke apart to look at the source. Chat didn’t look uncomfortable, in fact, he seemed to enjoy watching the family moment.
“I hate to break this up, but if I don’t get Marinette back soon, the rest of the house is going to worry.”
Sabine sighed and gave Marinette one more hug. “He’s right. But promise you’ll come and visit soon?”
“Hopefully not too soon. I need to stay in the competition a little longer.” Marinette laughed as she hugged her parents one more time, and exited the room through the balcony, Chat following closely behind.
“You really are dedicated to this competition, aren’t you?” Chat asked as he shut the door behind them. Marinette had walked to the edge of the balcony and clung to the railing, Chat following behind. She had missed this view and this part of her city.
Marinette turned to look at him. He didn’t know that she was Ladybug, nor did he know that she knew he was Adrien. He must have been trying to sound like an outsider, someone who wasn’t invested, but Marinette knew him too well. “I’m starting to like it there. Most of the girls are wonderful and they are such great friends. And the house is gorgeous—well you saw a small part of it tonight—and I really like going on the outings. It’s been a wonderful experience.” Marinette saw Chat shift slightly and she could see the frown on his face. She bit down on her smile so it wouldn’t show.
“And the boy? Uh, Adrien. Do you like him?” Chat looked at her, eyes wide with wonder.
“Now, why would I tell you about that?” Marinette teased.
“Um—You don’t have to—there’s no reason—I’m just curious.” He stammered, turning his head away to where he couldn’t meet her eyes, a slight blush forming right underneath his mask.
“Well as long as you’re just curious...” Marinette watched as Chat turned back to face her with a smile.
“You know, cats and their curiosity.” He winked and it evoked a laugh out of Marinette.
She sighed and began, letting her heart do the talking, “I really like him. He’s amazingly sweet and so kind and he has such a wonderful heart. When I’m with him, I feel like a better version of myself and I want him to never stop smiling because it’s beautiful and contagious. He’s the main thing keeping me on the show, because I don’t know if I can see my life without him anymore.” Marinette couldn’t stop once she started and she definitely didn’t mean to say all of that in front of Chat. He didn’t seem to mind though. That was like the third time she had spoken from her heart for Adrien that night. It must have been a new record.
“That’s... wow Marinette. I’m glad you’re happy.” At that, he scooped Marinette up and used his baton to send them off into the air.
The trip wasn’t long and although the wind blew cold, Chat’s arms were warm. She held on tight and didn’t let go until he touched down right outside of the mansion’s front door.
“Thanks for the lift, Chat,” She said as he put her down.
“Anytime, Princess,” a smile spread over his lips and he used his baton to send himself off, probably in the direction of his hotel room.

Miraculous Dream
This was a dream I had a while back about Miraculous Ladybug which REALLY surprised me because I didn’t realize my dreams could come up with such an elaborate plot for a show or in general. So enjoy what my brain cooked up I guess?
So basically, it starts with Marinette and Adrien
—They are at the museum, and Alya’s there, and some of the class. They are looking at this new exhibit...for some reason. Alya is talking to Marinette about this statue she found on exhibit and how it closely resembled Ladybug. Marinette is sweating bullets because oh no, Alya will discover my secret identity!!
—cut to Akuma attack, Hawkmoth ever vigilant as usual. Ladybug and Chat Noir transform and arrive on the scene. This akuma is really powerful, has some sort of timetraveling powers, and both superheroes are struggling today. It’s more powerful than they anticipated and they are losing. Badly. Ladybug needs to get away because she can call for backup; distribute the other miraculous. Chat Noir jumps in at the last moment to save Ladybug from one of the attacks. Self-sacrificing cat.
—Ladybug is heartbroken, and sits there clutching at the bleeding Chat. She’s really sad and beat-up, and she doesn’t have the energy to fight off the akuma
—Akuma approaches and Hawkmoth does the purple eye thing. Tells them to take their miraculous. But the akuma just stands there, silent, watching these two superheroes when they destransform. Marinette is crying and clutching onto a bleeding Adrien.
—the city is very...destroyed. In part because of the akuma and partly because of other happenstance. Hawkmoth yells at the akuma to grab the miraculous!! They’re vulnerable!! Never mind that it’s his son lying there broken and bleeding!!
—the purple light shatters into pieces, floating and disappearing into the wind. The akuma kneels down beside the two kids, and Marinette tells them to back away, fiercely protecting her Chat, but her voice is shaky.
—akuma tells her they’re sorry. That there was no going back this time. Something to do with the timelines. Some dialogue I missed, but the gist is that the akuma offers to fix it all if she handed over the Ladybug Miraculous.
—Marinette hands over her earrings with the promise Chat will be healed and happy.
—the ring is taken as well. The akuma, permanently one now, puts on the earrings and the ring. There’s a transformation into a fusion, but it’s barely noticeable against the bright light shining from a distance.
—the light flares, everything is white, when suddenly it fades and we get a shot of a beautiful Paris. Everything is back to normal. The sky is blue, sun is shining, no clouds. Eiffel Tower in distance. Everything is fixed. Audience hears people talking in background and expects Marinette to come stumbling onto the scene, and she does.
—plot twist: it’s in the past. Marinette doesn’t have the earrings, it’s about a year before the show happens. The akuma is hiding in the shadows, as they are now permanently in akuma form via breaking Hawkmoth’s control as well as using the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous at the same time
—Akuma establishes new identity, and buys a flat in Paris. Some sort of abode they can sleep and do their business.
—they remember Gabriel Agreste. They know his secret identity. They know how horrible he treated his son
—in this alternate universe the akuma stole the miraculous from Gabriel: both the peacock and the butterfly
—Gabriel forgets all about the miraculous. His wife is still gone, but he is a great father. He’s very supportive of Adrien and is always there for him. Nathalie is there too, to help balance out his fashion work. Adrien grew up in a loving household with a loving father but missing mother
—Marinette is the same, bit of an odd ball, but she’s friends with all her classmates. Chloe is going to a private school, I’m not sure if she was even in the country. I think she might’ve been in New York with her mother??
—the kids are happy, so are the citizens, and no one has to worry about being terrorized by a super villain. The akuma watches from afar as everyone is happy (but them)
—this is essentially a good timeline, but not the original
—Marinette met Adrien for the first time, who is so much more open and friendly due to support from his father. They both become immediate fast friends, and Marinette does not develop a debilitating crush on him
—Gabriel starts having these weird flashbacks of memories that never happened; he has memories of him as Hawkmoth from the other timeline. He’s conflicted, because that man was so horrible, but he’s filled with this burning need to find the miraculous. He thinks about maybe getting his wife back.
—its a conflict of interest because everyone is happy, and no one else seems like they are having flashbacks; except, of course, Marinette and Adrien.
—there’s an unforeseen circumstance in which a monster attacks Paris. Not via butterfly or peacock. No one knows where it came from, and they’re terrified.
—Adrien gets caught up in the crowd escaping and trips, before eventually getting trapped by some falling rubble. Gabriel sees this happen and panics for his son.
—the Akuma, watching this all happen, realized they need to step forward because no one else can. The miraculous are with them.
—the butterfly miraculous(which was a ring instead, silver) is put on, and a beautiful pink butterfly flies out at their command, which gets sent to Gabriel. They give him power to help out his son, and in turn save Paris.
—Gabriel transforms into Scarlet Moth (for some reason??) and to the rescue he goes. He saves Adrien, and the other citizens, but the monster mysteriously vanishes
—Marinette has been fretting this whole time because she believed she should be helping somehow, that there should be a kwami named Tikki talking to her, but the memory doesn’t make sense
—Gabriel’s identity is kept secret, but he now knows that there is someone out there with a miraculuous
—At the end of the episode, there’s a shot of this gathering of men in the shadows, and you can’t see their faces. They are all talking to each other over how the monster was fighting off a ‘superhero’ amongst other things, and arguing breaks out.
—the leader of the Shadow Gang yells ‘Quiet!’ And everyone falls silent. The leader proceeds to explain that they now know that the miraculous is out there, as evidenced by the Butterfly Miraculous. They make plans to continue sending out monsters to draw out the Miraculous Holder
—cue villainous laughter from leader, and the camera pans through the window to reveal that they are somewhere very cold, as there is a snowstorm in progress
—(it becomes obvious to theorists and MLB watchers that the new evil group is, in fact, the Guardians from the Miraculous Monastery. In the new timeline, the monastery was still attacked, however it wasn’t completely destroyed. Master Fu is there as a henchman to ‘atone for his mistakes in losing the miraculous’)

(This was Part 1 of the episode that played in my head. I’m still waiting for a Part 2)
