i miss when i was able to come on this app and go to a specific character x reader tag and find a bunch of really good fics or headcanons starring that character, because clearly if i went to their tag it’s because i wanted to read about them

now, however, when i go to a specific character x reader tag it’s just blurb after blurb or drabble after drabble of some vaguely characterized and probably ai written guy with twenty characters listed off at the bottom that said guy could apparently be and i’m just like 💀 this isn’t the content i’m looking for here

like i miss the thought and effort put into characterization and storytelling but now it’s just lame ass posts trying to get as many notes as possible with as little work as possible like spare us please

forgive me if this is a foolish question but can someone explain why everyone is so up in arms about nanowrimo giving the ok to people using ai to generate their novels? like yeah, obviously it's stupid as hell because this is supposed to be a creative endeavour, but it's not like the people who do this shit are gonna be making any money or getting any clout from it. is it just because it's bad for the environment?

I see there's a new post on AO3 on AI and data scraping, the contents of which I would describe as a real mixed bag, and the sheer number of comments on it is activating my self-preservation instincts too much for me to subject myself to reading through them. Instead I'm thinking about how much daylight there is between does or doesn't constitute a TOS violation and what does or doesn't violate community norms, and how AO3 finally rolled out that blocking and muting feature recently, and how I think it would be good, actually, if most people's immediate reaction to seeing a work that announces itself as being the product of generative AI was to mute the user who posted it.

That's my reaction, anyway!

I have an enormous dislike for the current fruits of AI, like a lot of people on the internet. And some of my issues stem from how ChatGPT, Dall-E, and generative Ai as a whole are products of the worst trends of late stage capitalism. These issues unfortunately fall flat with my tech-enthusiast and not-super-socially-conscious friends. But when we're talking AI Art specifically, I have another, bigger issue that bothers me more than the above. AI Art is empty.

The thing about art is that it's very much the product of someone's personal journey. Someone learned how to draw, and fleshed out their personal preferences in the process. So when you see a beautiful picture online, you can look up who made it and see what else they made. If they're a fandom artist, they've probably drawn most of the characters you like. (Bonus points if the fandom is super, super niche). And if they aren't? That's okay. If their art style is cool, there's still more pretty pictures to appreciate. You can't do this with AI. Full stop.

Generative AI is cool, because in theory there's an endless supply of pictures. No more waiting for your favorite artists to update, no more desperately digging through the internet for rare character art, you can just plug it into Dall-E. And boom. Art. Don't like it? Tweak the prompt and try again. That sounds great, until you realize there is no consistent style. There's no joy to be found in perusing the artist's gallery. You can't comment and briefly connect over your shared interest. You can't follow them and build a friendly relationship, or even become friends for real. There's nothing there but a soulless image generator. No interesting art style. No gallery. No shared interest. It's empty. If this is supposed to be the future, the future sucks.

I get mad when I see anyone talking about ML/AI on the internet ever because it makes me so incandescently mad that it's being used wrong because there are genuinely really good applications!! And all people want to do is to fucking replace people's jobs but doing it worse or shove it into random shit!!! And it also makes me mad that it maligns all the existing cool and good projects that get painted with the same tainted brush so anything ML ever gets slapped with the "AI bad" label automatically out of reflex because all the bullshit!!! Aughhhhh
