Finally Finished!
The Natural Way of Things - Charlotte Wood
6/10
This is definitely I book I won’t pick up again! I think the ending was really disappointing. The story was good however wasn’t gripping. I think it was definitely worth reading once but I was having to force myself to read it and it just isn’t what I would go for again. I was hoping for more of a thriller and a shock and twists and I just didn’t feel it.
However the writing was really good and it is a good story. This just wasn’t the genre for me

🌷 #EnEstadoSalvaje #RECOMENDED #Lee #Leer #Read #SiempreBuenosLibros #NovedadesEditoriales #bookstagram #book #instafit #instadaily #megustaleer #instagood #instagram #instagramers #blogger #blog #read #Leoycomparto #readingbook #readbook #LocuradeLibros #ClubdeLectura #ClubdeLecturaLL #librosrecomendados #FelicesLecturas 🌹📚❤️ (en Alfredo Nobel Park)

My latest book haul from my local library. :) • I've been trying to read more international contemporary fiction lately and have been focusing mainly on books published by @europaeditions because they are always well written! I wish the libraries close to me had more of their books though haha • Total Chaos by Jean-Claude Izzo is the first book in a series of literary-crime/mystery novel. I'm very excited to read my first French Noir book!! • The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood is a title I came across on Europa's website and I have absolutely no idea what it's about but it was one of the few europa books my library had. • Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce and The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende were both recommended to me by a friend, and my previous forays into Irish literature and Latin literature have left me pretty excited!! • Can anyone recommend some great translated fiction? I would really appreciate it!! • #bookhaul #librarybooks #internationalfiction #europaeditions #totalchaos #jeanclaudeizzo #frenchliterature #worldnoir #internationalcrime #thenaturalwayofthings #charlottewood #portraitoftheartistasayoungman #jamesjoyce #irishliterature #thehouseofspirits #isabelallende #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeature #bibliophile #amreading #instaread #instabook #bookphotography #goodreads #booknerd #booknerdigans #booklover #readersofinstagram #greatreads

Digital ethnography: Patricia Larocque
Tumblr media
For this week's task, I chose to research the working practice of Lyon-based illustrator and artist Patricia Larocque (aka ffembroidery). Experimenting with embroidery and textile art, Patricia takes inspiration from horror movies and reality television to create unique and expressive characters. Patricia works as a creative full time, selling her creations on her website. Her bespoke embroidered patches range between €45-€80.
Tumblr media
Speaking to It's Nice That, Patricia describes how her techniques are self-taught, after finding university anxiety-inducing. Her practice has evolved from 'years and years, hours and hours, of stitching and creating'.
Tumblr media
Her current business model took shape after moving to Europe from Canada in 2011: “These projects initially started as gifts for friends and they quickly turned into a gratifying hobby in-between work. I opened up a Tumblr account (as you do) and after receiving an overwhelming response to my work (and also stockpiling a bunch of bags), I decided to open up an online store in 2014.”
Tumblr media
Speaking on her inspirations, Patricia describes how her creative process can be unpredictable, hinting at how her working hours can also be unpredictable: 'I’ll go weeks without feeling very creative and some days it just hits me and I’ll be stitching all day, so it’s very unpredictable.' Although the embroidery is an extremely time-consuming process, her pieces taking 10-15+ hours to complete, she still enjoys the process & finds it therapeutic, suggesting that her work is also something she does in her downtime.
Tumblr media
She notes how she has begun experimenting with tools to increase her pace of production, suggesting that perhaps her store is not currently making enough to sustain her full-time project. However, through running her own store and selling her products herself, she will not have to pay a percentage to an agent and can set the prices for her products herself, thus having control over how much she is paid.
Tumblr media
Her business appears to be growing and she has 'big plans for the future'. It is unclear whether she also takes commissioned work, but from her Instagram it appears she is only creating work for her shop. However, she does advertise her contact details so she is likely open to making custom pieces for a fee.

Hello everyone hope your week has started off well, happy Monday to you all. I’m still off work but feeling a bit better and it’s a great chance to share another book haul with you! These are three paperbacks I’ve had my eye on. Variations is a debut short story collection where the history of transgender Britain is explored. After reading and thoroughly enjoying Detransition Baby earlier this year I’ve been eager to educate myself more. Filthy Animals is another short story collection, this time the stories are all linked and although I haven’t read the author’s previous Booker listed novel Real Life, it’s coming up fairly soon on my TBR, promise! 🙈😂 Finally we have The Weekend, a novel from Charlotte Wood. I loved her previous novel, The Natural Way Of Things and am excited to read more from her. This follows three women in their seventies who spend time together in the beach house of their late friend. I love stories from the POV of older protagonists and I’m looking forward to getting to know this group of ladies. If this is anything like Wood’s previous novel, it’ll have its dark moments and I am HERE for that! I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors, especially if you’ve read or want to read them.
