By Our Royal Decree:
We are Charles XIV John, Sovereign Prince of Pontecorvo, Marshal of France (formerly), and more predominantly remembered as King of Sweden and Norway by the grace of God. Titles aside, We expect you lot to address Us as Charles John: While Our name may still hold some weight from the days of the Empire, it is Our royal title that reflects who we are now. Therefore, those unacquainted with Our earlier life should address Us as such.
Friends, of course, may conduct otherwise, though time has rendered Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte increasingly foreign to Our ears. Such familiarity is a privilege, not a right, and we are rather selective about granting it.
Having observed the activities on this peculiar platform for some time, We have decided to engage as even We are not above indulging in the occasional jest if it strikes Our fancy; if only to amuse Ourselves in quiet moments between more substantial endeavors. It is a curious thing, this "blog," and We must admit, the opportunity for correspondence suits Us well. The chance to meet others- be they familiar faces from Our past or wholly new acquaintances- is, We daresay, rather appealing.
We have opened Our correspondence for those wishing to inquire about matters ranging from Our career to Our philosophies. We shall do Our utmost to respond thoughtfully. A few notes before you proceed:
We do ask that you exercise civility in your correspondence. While We welcome spirited debate, We do not entertain hostility.
If you wish to speak of the intricacies of Our earlier life- We shall answer as We see fit. However, personal matters regarding Our family or past controversies may not always receive the same courtesy. There are limits to even Our patience. We will not tolerate unnecessary rudeness or those who feel the need to poke fun at Our decisions during Our tenure as a Marshal or as a monarch.
We value decorum and respect, this is not a tavern. Overly inappropriate questions will not be answered, that is the bottom line. A little wit or cheekiness is fine, but keep it tasteful.
Let it be known that We anticipate these exchanges with earnest interest and look forward to engaging with those who write.
By Our Hand and Seal,
Carl Johan

> The King of Sweden guys!! Did you know the guy barely even knew Swedish? He wouldn't even be able to comprehend his own countries theme song!! Anyways, totally be prepared for this whole kingly façade to crumble the moment Bernadotte has to deal with any of his former colleagues, because it can; and it will! God knows I'm not royal we'ing it up every single post. > I strive to make my portrayal as generally accurate and as true to his personality as possible, but this is not a historically accurate interpretation. GOD KNOWS its not, guys, my forte is Joachim Murat; but a man with an excessive amount of gasconade is a man with an excessive amount of gasconade. I'm actively learning stuff about Bernadotte as I go and we all know about how much character demolishing propaganda this man is buried in /hj > This blog is ran on EST / GMT-5

So I was watching one of my favorite movies the other day, The Blues Brothers, and when Cab Calloway sang Minnie the Moocher, this part caught my attention:
She had a dream about the king of Sweden He gave her things, that she was needin' He gave her a home built of gold and steel A diamond car, with the platinum wheels He gave her his townhouse and his racing horses Each meal she ate was a dozen courses She had a million dollars worth of nickels and dimes She sat around and counted them all a million times
What if it was Bernadotte? After all, it was a dream that Minnie was having so it doesn't have to be historically accurate to the time. (If it's not him, it's one of his descendants though, unless she dreamed of pre-Bernadotte Sweden.) Idk why I thought that was funny.

Deciding the Course Black Sails Musical Parallels | VII. VIII. XIV. XVI. XXII. XXVI.
music variation note: the first three scenes are all in high sounding strings. The scenes in XVI and XXVI are played on lower strings and a couple octaves down. The scene in XXII is in a mix of high and mid strings, and in an octave between the other scenes.
I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

Dorothea Marianne Starrick - Infographic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Oh, do you care, I still feel for you So aware, What should be lost is there
I fear I will never find anyone I know my greatest pain is yet to come Will we find each other in the dark My long lost love
Safely away from the world In a dream, timeless domain A child, dreamy eyed, Mother's mirror, father's pride
I wish I could come back to you Once again feel the rain Falling inside me Cleaning all that I've become
My home is far but the rest it lies so close With my long lost love under the black rose You told I had the eyes of a wolf Search them and find the beauty of the beast
All of my songs can only be composed of the greatest of pains Every single verse can only be born of the greatest of wishes I wish I had one more night to live"
"BEAUTY OF THE BEAST" - NIGHTWISH
(first template by @phillipsgraves, thought I took the liberty to add the second page myself).

SO.
I *FINALLY* MANAGED TO FINISH DOROTHEA'S INFOGRAPHIC.
Good gods above, it took me FOREVER.
I started it around the same time I started Luscinia's, and I worked on and off on it (that freaking Family tree took me FOREVER.
F-O-R-E-V-E-R.
But now I am finally done, and oh my gods, I am so freaking happy with how all of this turned out!!
FUN FACT:
Dorothea's maternal side is COMPLETELY comprised of Templars. She descends from the Swedish Branch of the Brahe Family (Templars that operated both in Denmark and in Sweden) and the Bielke Family, who operated at the court of King Charles XIV John and, subsequentially, King Oscar I of Sweden.
(and I've written such delicious headcanon when she discovered that some of the favours her family benefitted from were due to her ancestor, Magnus, being the paramour of King Charles -gods, Phillip and Dottie got a field day with that one, lemme tell you).
On the Starrick Side, instead, you will see that the family actually took the name not from Dorothea's Great Grandfather, but from her Great Grandmother, Dorothea Harriet Starrick, a woman of sparkling intellect and the reason why the Starrick Family was initiated on the path of wealthness.
WELL, THAT IS ALL FOR NOW.
I HOPE YOU WILL LIKE THIS!

Napoleon and Water
Excerpt from the book Aaron Burr in Exile: A Pariah in Paris, 1810-1811, by Jane Merrill and John Endicott
Aaron Burr lived in Paris for 15 months, and this book goes into detail about those years living under Napoleon’s rule. This part focuses on Napoleon’s water related reforms.
———
Napoleon’s fountains gave drinking water to the population, that is, children drank water, not beer. The water was free, not purchased. And the apartment would have had a separate water closet equipped with squat toilets (adopted from the Turks) and a bucket to wash it after use. Some restaurants and cafes had W.C.s, even one for ladies and one for gents. These were hooked into the sewer system that branched under each important street.
Napoleon merits points for delivering fresh water to Paris. If serving Paris with water from the d'Ourcq River by canals was not be a consummate success, Paris gained 40 new fountains, and the emperor commanded that fountains run all day (instead of a few limited hours) and that the water be free of charge.
Perhaps the most laudable of Napoleon’s policies were utilitarian city works, especially bringing clean water and sanitation to Paris. The improvements to infrastructure included new quays to prevent floods, new gutters and pavement, new aqueducts and fountains, and relocating cemeteries and slaughterhouses to the outskirts of the city. This was also a way of keeping up employment. An Austrian aristocrat in town during Napoleon’s wedding to Marie-Louise wrote his mother, in Vienna: “Nothing can give an idea of the immense projects undertaken simultaneously in Paris. The incoherence of it is incredible; one cannot imagine that the life of a single man would be enough to finish them.”
It was a tall order. Previous rulers had been aware of the problems and one big engineering initiative, a failed marvel, had been the waterworks at Marly, located on the banks of the Seine about seven miles from Paris. Louis XIV had it constructed to pump water from the river to his chateaux of Versailles and Marly. This was the machine marvel of its age, with 250 pumps that forced river water up a 500-foot rise to an aqueduct, and it was a sight Burr mentions going to see. By 1817 the “Marly machine” had deteriorated because it was made of wood, and the waterworks were abandoned.
Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, the prominent 19th century literary critic, wrote that there had been “ten years of anarchy, sedition and laxity, during which no useful work had been undertaken, not a street had been cleaned, not a residence repaired nothing improved or cleansed.” Postrevolutionary Paris was at a nadir in terms of both the inadequate, disease-ridden water supply and the filthy streets, which were basically open sewers, deep with black mud and refuse.
“Napoleon,” writes Alistair Horne, “was obsessed by the water of Paris, and everything to do with it.”
Parisians had mostly been getting their water directly from the Seine or lining up at the scant pay fountains. In 1806, nineteen new wells for fountains were dug that flowed day and night and were free. Napoleon had a canal built 60 miles from the River Ourcq, ordering 500 men to dig it, while still a consul in 1801. It brought water to the Bassin de la Villette, opening in 1808. Some doubted the wisdom of having such an abundance of water—an oriental luxury that might incur moral decay. Now the supply of water for firefighting was also much improved. The canal had light boats, as Napoleon tried to make back some of the huge expenditure by licensing navigation, and a circular aqueduct from which underground conduits went to the central city. In 1810, there were still many water porters wheeling barrels through the city.
Now Napoleon attacked the problem of the Seine as a catchall for pollution. Parisians were so used to it that men swam naked in the river and a contemporary guidebook advised merely that the water of the Seine had no ill effects on foreigners so long as they drank it mixed with wine or a drop of vinegar. Thus houses on bridges were demolished and an immense push began to clean and modernize the city sewers.
As this book is about Aaron Burr, here is section about Burr taking inspiration by a new water related invention during his time in Paris:
Remarkably for someone who was very aware of his health, he never complained of the water. He did, however, take an interest in an invention to make it easier to dig a well. When the inventor of a process to make vinegar from the sap of any tree was not in his shop, Burr and a friend, “Crede”, went to see another invention: “We went then to see Mons. Cagniard, and his new invention of raising water and performing any mechanical operation. His apparatus is a screw of Archimedes turned the reverse, air, water, and quick silver. Cagniard was abroad; but we saw a model, and worked it, and got the report of a committee of the Institute on the subject. If the thing performs what is said I will apply it to give water to Charleston.”

An Equestrian Portrait of the Young King Charles II of Spain
Artist: Sebastián Herrera Barnuevo (Spanish, 1619–1671)
Date: 1665
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Private Collection
Charles II of Spain
Charles II of Spain (6 November 1661 – 1 November 1700), also known as El Hechizado, or the Bewitched, was King of Spain from 1665 to 1700. The last monarch from the House of Habsburg which had ruled Spain since 1516, he died without children, leading to a European conflict over his successor.
Charles became king at the age of four, but for reasons that are still debated, he experienced extended periods of ill health throughout his life. This made the question of his successor central to European diplomacy for much of his reign, historian John Langdon-Davies writing that "…from the day of his birth, they were waiting for his death".
The two main candidates were the Austrian Habsburg Archduke Charles, and 16-year-old Philip of Anjou, grandson of Maria Theresa of Spain and Louis XIV of France. Shortly before his death in November 1700, Charles named Philip his heir, but the acquisition of an undivided Spanish Empire by either France or Austria threatened the European balance of power. Failure to resolve these issues through diplomacy resulted in the 1701 to 1714 War of the Spanish Succession.

On 11th* December 1748 Charles Edward Stuart was arrested in Paris after failing to leave under the terms of the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.
*Other source says 10th
Charlie had returned to France in 1746, he continued to be driven by his dynastic ambitions for a Stuart restoration in the years that followed he faced a series of setbacks and disappointments, the first was in 1647 when Pope Benedict XIV announced his intention to make Charles’s brother, Henry Benedict, a Cardinal – a Prince of the Catholic Church. Charles described this action as being like a dagger to his heart.
Think about the impact of this appointment: hopes of a Stuart restoration to the throne were now irrevocably dashed. Such an overt allegiance to the Catholic Church would make it difficult – if not impossible – for Charles to stake a claim. It became clear that King Louis would not finance another rising so Prince Charles, with his loyal servant, Archie Cameron, rode across the Pyrenees into Spain to try to win King Ferdinand to his cause, this again was unsuccessful.
Returning to France he was joined by his wife Jean, who had suffered badly during his absence, losing two of their children from exposure as they hid in caves and on the hills. The consolation was the king of France continued, however, to accord his visitor ‘moral support’, this was however about to change.
The dates differ slightly on this next setback, in December 1748 in accordance with the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, Charles was requested to leave France. Charles was told to leave forthwith for the Swiss city of Fribourg, a retreat Louis had arranged for him; but he refused to be dictated to and paraded around Paris as if he “owned the city and all of France.” He was warned that he would be arrested and bodily thrown out if necessary, but he still believed he could bluff out of existence in France.
One source tells us that things came to a head mid December when…….
“………Charles arrived by coach at the opera house. The footman who opened the doors was swiftly brushed aside by armed guards. Upon orders from his most Christian Majesty, the Prince was arrested, trussed hand and foot, and carried off to the person in Vincennes, where he was to remain until his senses were restored. On December 12th, Charles finely made his submission to the King of France by letter. After a grovelling preamble about his undying devotion to Louis’s sacred person, the Prince said he was ready to leave France as commanded. He was released with money and an escort and order to Avignon.”
An objection was raised by the English government to his stay in this city, and Charles departed of his own accord, early 1749 he was given a residence by the Pope.
For the next few years his movements are wrapped in mystery, which recent investigation has only partially unveiled. For some time he was living secretly in Paris, though not unknown to the French government, with his mistress, Clementina Walkenshaw, who had joined him soon after his return from Scotland.
It is certain that he was in London in 1750, and that at this time he declared himself a protestant, under the idea that by so doing he would greatly improve his chance of obtaining the English crown.
There is also evidence he was in London in 1752 and 1754 to rouse the English Jacobites into action, but without success.
In 1766 James VIII and III died in Rome; his son would ‘inherit’ the right to become Charles III, but this required recognition from the Pope and Europe’s Catholic monarchs, to me this was the final nail in the coffin, this recognition was not forthcoming.
By the time of Prince Charles’s death in 1788 he had been reunited with his only daughter, Charlotte and she took care of her father in his final, ailing years.
Pics are a drawing called “Arrest of the Young Pretender in Paris,” illustration from 'John Cassell's Illustrated History of England', c.1858
The Prince is also said to have made visits to London in the years that followed.

April 23, 2024: Available Now: Archaic Torsos of Both Sexes
Available Now: Archaic Torsos of Both Sexes Gregory Orr
Though I'm modest as most, I couldn't help noticing certain parts of the statues have been polished to a high sheen by passing hands as the centuries passed. If it's a form of worship it's not much odder or more perverse than the saint's stone toe kissed to a stub by fervent lips.
And even though Plato suspected art almost as much as he suspected the body's curves, he did assert Desire could lead to the True and Beautiful. Therefore I choose to believe that mortals pausing here to cup a marble breast or buttock were doing their best to grasp the Ideal— and their foolish gestures made it shine more brightly.
