Koschei had gotten lost from Theta. They had stopped here for fuel so often that it shouldn’t be confusing anymore. But he had lost Theta, which meant he himself got lost in his brief stress. It would be fine, though, because he was being directed by his husband through their psychic link. Trying to describe where he was— albeit, not very well… 

He had cut down a quiet alleyway to try and cut time in finding Theta. Who may have felt his sudden shock at being grabbed at, pulled— and the second that contact was made he tucked away any stray indications of psychic links, putting it all away, essentially hanging up on Theta. As he was pressed to a wall and his head turned up to the source to right them, though… 

That wasn’t Theta. 

Certainly looked like him, though.

But he wasn’t Theta. Wasn’t looking at him remotely close to it. That was the same face, but even briefly it was so different…

What did he have here? 

“H— Hello.” Koschei said cautiously, tilting his head against the brick behind him. Trying not to reveal what he knew all right away. “This… Is a very prolonged mugging, if… That’s what this is.” He said, clearing his throat, eyes wandering over his face to take in what was different. Who he was looking at. Definitely Time Lord. There was no question there. 

“— And I don’t have a wallet, either. So is there… Uh- anything else, or…” he said, feigning casualty as he attempted to tug his hand away, more a test than anything else.

Mirror!AU (aka[to me] Gay Marriage Universe) is a surprisingly + weirdly Kind Alternate, Somewhat-Parallel Universe where Theta Sigma* acted on a panicked impulse and went back for Koschei before running away from Gallifrey with him, and Susan. Gay Shenanigans Ensue, for Centuries. *the Doctor, for a while

Was up until like 5 AM thinking a lot about Mirror!Thoschei during + after the War, mostly Nine!Theta & Simm!Koschei, Ten!Theta & Simm!Koschei, and Eleven!Theta & Darvill!Koschei. Have some info dumping below (and in the link above in their under construction character page). If it’s confusing I’m only a little sorry.

Nine!Theta and Simm!Kosch— separated for a while after the Time War. The Doctor drops the Doctor at some point, begins to go by Theta to everyone again. Theta was in denial about not knowing about Koschei’s state of being afterwards, and the fact that he just fled Gallifrey after the War without checking on literally anyone. Soon meets Rose, and then Jack during this crisis. Jacobi!Koschei eventually escaped Gallifrey+the Council, regenerates into Simm!, and goes through a series of events to track down his husband.  Theta and Koschei do a brief bit of arguing and a lot of trauma exchanging and wound poking in these faces. If they didn’t have other people around they would wallow for entirely too long. Luckily* Nine is followed by Ten. 

Ten!Theta and Simm!Koschei— Need projects or they will Die. Horribly codependent. Separated for too long. Too many close calls when they’re reunited. It takes a lot to get them to leave each other’s sides or heads in these faces. And if it happens forcibly there’s hell to pay.  Both a bit too smug and egotistical together (saying something, considering it’s them). Both absolutely too obsessed with the other. Both a bit too aware of what they can get the other to do, and what they’re capable of doing together, near the end.  Ten & Simm regenerate together, practically on top of one another. It feels ritualistic. It feels like sharing something nobody is supposed to share, like that. It’s euphoric. It’s not good for either of them, really.

Eleven!Theta & Darvill!Koschei— An AU on top of an AU, because I’m worth it. Possessive, over-protective, doting, and mildly reclusive until other people & TARDISes have anything to say about it. Despite this they need company or they’ll combust and get way too self-involved in each other’s heads. Still avoiding Gallifrey like the plague despite, and because of, Theta’s growing anxiety about regeneration cycles. 

None of them are Okay.

I haven’t gone on long enough to give Twelve!Theta and Gomez/Missy!Koschei && Thirteen!Theta and Dhawan!Koschei much long term thought as far as lore and Universe differences.

I do think one of the two pairs tries, a bit tongue-in-cheek, to be “divorced” for a while. To prove they can go without the other. For a change of pace. They’ve never tried it before! Centuries upon centuries of living, no divorce! Let’s give it a shot for kicks— oh we’re both wrecks. Oh no neither of us are actually acting divorced or separated. Oh this is aggressively gay.

Theta and Koschei are various regenerations of the Doctor and the Master from an alternate universe. Largely defaults to Ten & Simm, or Eleven & Darvill. Formerly the Doctor, and never the Master, Theta and Koschei travel(read: fuck about) a very different, but similar, pushed to the left, Universe and pick up pet side projects along the way.

writing AU!Theta is like. The Doctor, but a few steps to the left. You were not incredibly far off course to where you could’ve been in your story, in another timeline. Never worrying about being completely alone, never losing your best friend, more time to be selfish. You are changed, and you can see the other universe’s self inside of your own, but how it even got to that point confuses you.

writing AU!Koschei is like. You never had to be the Master. I’m not even sure if you have it in you to be the Master if it came down to it now. You never had to endure half the shit you had to, at least not without a hand to hold through it. Your megalomanic tendencies still exist, your fears still have legs. But you are an intrinsically different person no matter which way it is sliced. You kind of hurt to look at. And you’re aware of exactly how it could have happened instead.

They were on Earth today to refuel— they didn’t actually go to Earth often, but Koschei had noticed it was becoming more of a habit. (Koschei always insisted that when they did go to Earth, it was simply for Theta’s benefit.)(He was a liar, but it was a lie Theta allowed him to tell himself.)

All to say that… Neither of them expected someone to try and unlock the ship. And then to knock when it didn’t work. The two time lords paused, looked at one another and decidedly didn’t check the TARDIS monitors.

 “I’ve… Got it?” Theta says in their quiet bewilderment, adjusts himself before walking to the front doors, “You know,” he starts as they just open, “In over 900 years I never thought I’d have to say that I think you might have the wrong blue…. Box?” 

And now the door was open, and he’d been using his slim frame to block the doorway, and… Theta was now staring at an entirely too familiar face. He squinted, leaned in a little as if to get a better look while keeping his distance. “What?” he says quietly, and it’s mostly to himself. 

“… Right. Uh. Koschei?” Theta calls over his shoulder, but doesn’t take his eyes off the man in front of him. “We have a… A Guest?” And before Koschei can come up beside him he was leaning in again, both hands on either side of the doorway. “Who the hell do you think you are?”

“There you are,” Theta immediately started going off, and began pulling himself up and over from underneath a very irritable TARDIS console. “I’ve been tryin’ to reason and work with her since you left, but she’s all out of sorts since we landed! I was just asking when you’d get back, taking ten years just to find bloody bolts and accelerator coola—“

He finally stopped dead when he looked up, when he realized that Koschei, was not, in fact, the one who came walking through the front door. ..Wait. That wasn’t right.

“Well, I… Don’t.. Suppose you have the wrong… Blue-Box-TARDIS?”

They didn’t know how long Five would be there— it was strange to let some other version of Theta into their little lives that they’d worked so hard to protect after the War. But at least with him not unwelcome.

“Right. I think that’s everything you need to know about the layout of our ship...” Koschei said, hands in his pockets. Because when it came time to set the TARDIS up for stationing or showing their new friend around and tethering the ships together, well… Koschei had jumped for exactly the option Theta expected. 

His hands clasped together and he looked at Five with a smile. Koschei had closed a lot of the distance between them as they walked. “We should be ready to attach the ships soon. Do you need help with yours?” He asked, clearing his throat. “I mean, I’d like to see it anyways. Take in all the differences…”

Very much obsessed with the image of just. Adult Mirror Theta & Koschei absolutely hanging off one another in practically any regenerations. If they’re apart in a room for too long they slowly gravitate toward the other like powerful little magnets. Koschei watches Theta enter and leave rooms out of habit. Theta looks for Koschei when they think they’re being especially clever or doing something partially for approval. Constantly having outside conversations about people in front of their faces because they’re constantly sharing a psychic link. Their psychic connection is so tangled up in one another’s that severing it would probably fucking hurt. Unwell. Do Not Separate Them for too long or else something will happen and it WON’T be good for anyone involved.

mirror universe koschei so incredibly dogcoded. he has in fact been described as theta’s guard dog. he watches theta enter and leave rooms until he leaves eyesight. he is entirely too protective and possessive and always winds up back at his side and would go into a burning building if it meant theta wouldn’t have to(and would tell him he did a good job after, too).

(make no mistake, theta’s also pretty dogcoded and has in turn also been described as koschei’s dog before[puppy, specifically], but in the flavor of an… incredibly pampered hunting+show dog.)

Mirror Verse!Koschei probably does lovingly describe Theta as having the attitude of a person who’s never been told ‘no’ their entire life(lives) while also having zero(read: 100%) self-awareness that HE is the one who created this monster. Like. In every Universe Theta Sigma is the Universe’s punching bag, that doesn’t change. This boy is still ‘being told no’ and being put through bullshit daily, by your side, you are there for it. What happens when the fix-it fic fixes too many things too far back in a storyline.

Theta Sigma Lungbarrow and Koschei Oakdown left Gallifrey with Koschei’s Father’s TARDIS and a young adult Arkytior one day and simply didn’t look back. Theta Sigma and Koschei Oakdown have no idea how lucky their Universe turned out, and how different both of them are in turn from their typical Universe counterparts.

A timeline & universe where Theta and Koschei never really became the Doctor and the Master and ran away together before becoming enemies, and a timeline where the Time War didn’t end in genocidal destruction, and the implications of all of that.

Theta and Koschei will largely default to Ten & Simm or Eleven & Darvill faceclaims, though I can and will write them in most any Doctor/Master combo. By and large a package deal. Horrifically codependent, protective, and self-serving to a fault. Deeply connected to one another telepathically/psychically after centuries of just… Living in one another’s heads. Travelers, in the sense that they like to find projects to bide their time. Nine/Ten & Simm spend a not-insignificant amount of time relocating supplies to Gallifreyan diaspora on & off Earth after the Time War, for instance. There is less care about world saving and doing the morally right— protecting one another and whoever they may have decided to care about takes precedence. They care, sometimes.
