Family Feud Nominations, Who is the Best Doctor Who Family
If I've missed a character out of one of the families let me know (within reason, I imagine all these families are massive in the EU, so prioritise tv or significant characters)
Currently, the only rule is no families may inculde anyone who is even ambiguously The Doctor, it'll get super complicated super fast imo
Any characters, eg River, who can link up multiple different families to create a single massive family unit will be treated on a case by case basis. If it is possible to pick one of the smaller family units that they are a part of to include them in while not including them in any of the others (in a way everyone will agree at least makes sense) they will be included in that family only, otherwise they will not be included
Please bare in mind when you are nominating that I am hoping to keep the number of nominations under 64 to run this as a mini-tournament. This is not a hard rule so if nominations do exceed 64 its not a big deal, just something I'd like everyone to bare in mind
Nominees

Notes on; Ian Chesterton
Ian was the first doctor’s companion alongside Barbara (his future wife) and susan. Through various novels such as ‘Byzantium’ and ‘Flame of Cadiz’ we have a rough background for his life growing up in world war two, joining the national guard and then the RAF through to ending up becoming a science teacher at coal hill school in 1963.
It is also in the new River Song audios that she worked at Coal hill and has met both Ian and Barbara, presumably before their travels with the doctor.
But this is where it becomes interesting. I tend to remember watching episodes like the Caveman one from the perspective of a child, i was around three ish when I was first introduced to it, so I initially see Ian as a bit of a himbo, only really there to do the muscle and light exposition. But rewatching it, he’s quite subtly playing to earn a spot level with the Doctor. He stops the Doctor from caving an injured man’s head in, and in a series where the predominant character is a bit of a lying twat, its very easy to sympathise with Ian.
In many cases, he is looking out for the doctor as well as Susan and Barbara more than anyone else, certainly more than the title character that offers them ultimatums and tries to get rid of them/ not rescue them frequently.
However he does appear to make amends with Hartnells doctor, having him as a best man at his wedding to Barbara
As for life after leaving the tardis? In the novels he has an adventure with the eleventh Doctor, and doubts if he is the same man, but in the Day of the Doctor episode (2013) it is implied that he was taken to the black archive and memory wiped of it all - questionable since he’s canonically used in the 70′s by unit) He goes on to become a lecturer in Astronomy - in the sarah Jane adventures she repeats a rumour that both him and Barbs work at Cambridge and remain unaged (multiple sources revoke this claim), as well as becoming a board member for coal hill which was again referenced for the fiftieth.
It’s also canon that his son goes on to be a musician, Johnny Chess, that Ace enjoys listening to.
His legacy within the lore lies in a tree that marks his life up until the 22nd century (according to susan who found it while living in the now converted coal hill school), he is probably one of the most referenced companions of all time and has been pulled through by writers of both screen and novels and audios as being probably one of the most heroic; fighting at all ages and across several dimensions for the doctor and his friends

Excerpted from: Felschow, Laura. “Plagiarism or Props? Homage to Neil Gaiman in Eric Kripke’s Supernatural.” TV Goes to Hell: An Unofficial Road Map of Supernatural. Eds. Stacey Abbott and David Lavery. Toronto: ECW Press, 2011. 230-43. Print.
Hammer of the American Gods
I know how gods begin, Roger. We start as dreams. Then we walk out of dreams into the land. We are worshipped and loved, and take power to ourselves. And then one day there’s no one left to worship us. The Sandman: Brief Lives, 5.20
“Hammer of the Gods” (5.19) serves as a prime example for those who think that Supernatural may be treading on territory covered by Gaiman. In his seminal novel American Gods, deities such as Anansi, Anubis, Bast, Czernobog, Kali, Loki, Odin, and the Zorya, as well as folklore heroes such as Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, and mythic creatures like leprechauns, populate the small towns and big cities of America. Like the gods that sometimes weave their way through The Sandman’s pages, these have been all but forgotten by America’s people, who instead now worship the new gods of media and technology. At a strange roadside attraction well off the beaten path, the old gods gather to plan their war to recapture what they feel is rightfully theirs.
In “Hammer of the Gods,” the gods Baldur, Ganesh, Kali, and many others gather at a strange roadside motel to plan their war against Lucifer and his oncoming Apocalypse. The gods conspire to bring the Winchesters to their odd convention and plan to use them as bait to bring Lucifer to their doorstep. While American Gods pits old gods vs. new, “Hammer of the Gods” places gods of many of the world’s religions against the perceived arrogance of the Judeo-Christian theology within the context of Supernatural’s world, which is threatening apocalyptic destruction with no regard for the fact that their religion is not the only religion. The episode serves as a self-reflexive criticism of Supernatural’s heavier reliance on Judeo-Christian ideas since the beginning of season 4, but the pantheon of gods storyline also reminded many of Gaiman’s novel. This prompted CinemaSpy writer Blaine Kylio to suggest: “If Sam and Dean are going to be confronting the likes of Anubis, Thor, and Kali -- because she’s bound to make a return, right? -- in season 6, maybe Gaiman should be brought in at least as a consultant, if not a full-on writer/producer.”
It’s an interesting thought, and it brings about an important question. Since Gaiman’s body of work would not exist as it is today if not for other bodies of work, if not for other writers’ characters, plots, and ideas, how would Gaiman feel about Supernatural liberally borrowing from his texts? Drawing on his published statements, it seems he would not be too bothered and may even be flattered. He states:
People writing within a certain genre are always going to overlap with ideas -- some of which they glean from others and some of which they come up with themselves. And that’s a good thing. It’s only in this unfortunate era when some people seem to think that all ideas must spring brand new from a virgin mind that the idea of sharing, building on the works of others and creating new derivative works are seen as being bad (Manick).
If Gaiman’s work is derivative -- if Good Omens draws on Chesterton (and surely also parodies demonic children movies like The Omen and other biblically inspired books, TV shows, and movies not mentioned herein) -- then is not Supernatural just another link in the chain? Is borrowing from Good Omens and American Gods that strikingly different or worse than the tone and spirit of Gaiman that tinges earlier seasons? Some Supernatural fans familiar with Gaiman aren’t bothered by the obvious allusions to his work in season 5. Long-time fan Krystina writes: “Overall, I thought the similarities between the recent seasons of Supernatural and Good Omens were pretty amusing. It just felt as if Sam and Dean had traveled through the Good Omens world from time to time” (personal communication, 27 September 2010). Another fan, Amanda, holds the opposite opinion: “I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t impressed by the Good Omens rip off. I felt like it was too . . . detailed to be homage” (personal communication, 19 November 2009). She adds later, “I couldn’t help but be overwhelmingly reminded of the original material and how much better it had been handled there” by Gaiman and Pratchett (personal communication, 4 October 2010).
It is doubtful anyone in Gaiman’s camp will be contacting their lawyers very soon, but whether or not the fans are crazy about the creative decisions being made in the writers’ room is less clear. In the end, all of Kripke’s interest in Gaiman may have an unexpected pay-off. In early September 2010, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Warner Bros. TV is in the process of acquiring the television rights to The Sandman series and that the top candidate to write and produce the show is in fact none other than Eric Kripke. While at this point it is unclear whether Gaiman will participate in bringing Sandman to the small screen, maybe Kripke will get to meet Neil Gaiman after all. [4 of 4]

"The Man in Black s1-3"
THE MAN IN BLACK – YOUR APPOINTMENT WITH FEAR FEBRUARY 5, 2017 GREYDOGTALES 1 COMMENT
Have you met the Man in Black? Has he whispered to you on the airwaves? Your radio is dead, and yet his voice is still there inside you, entreating you to join him… Yes, our Voice of Horror series is back, with a hero of the genre!
Long before Johnny Cash, the Tommy Lee Jones films or even Westworld, there was a single man who embodied the concept of the forbidding stranger, the archivist of the dark – the Man in Black. Can you recall his name, or remember his sepulchral tones? No? Then we shall help. Treats are in store, including some links to where you can listen to, or watch, him in action.
Along the way we bump into Shirley Jackson, Hammer Horror, GK Chesterton, Edgar Allan Poe, Dr Who, Sid James of Carry On fame and S T Joshi, amongst others. Is that enough names yet? For today’s article we must take you back to the days when you made radio shows by rubbing two sticks together, so a few reminders may be in order.
Dyall M for Murder
Valentine Dyall (1908-1985) was the true Man in Black, and it came about because of the BBC. In the 1940s and 50s, they aired a wonderful radio series called Appointment with Fear. This was a series of dramatised horror stories which both drew on the classics and also invited new stories from contemporary writers. Each started with an introduction from the narrator, the Man in Black, either teasing the listener about the nature of the tale to come, or warning them of the terror that awaited them.
Each show was about half an hour long. When Dyall started speaking, you knew you were in the right place. His voice was dark and distinctive (some called him the British Vincent Price), and he had a resonance which just oozed menace. Occasionally the actual story was less interesting than his narration. Between 1943 and 1955 he introduced nine series of terrifying tales, with one more series being narrated by his father, Franklin Dyall. He also narrated a single series of the Man in Black in 1949.
Before we say more about Appointment with Fear, we should mention Dyall’s wider horror credentials. He had a number of parts in film and TV over the years, in addition to his radio work, and his career was packed with the sort of media trivia that we so love.
For our younger listeners, Dyall played the Black Guardian in Dr Who between 1979 and 1983.
“The Black Guardian is an anthropomorphic personification of the forces of entropy and chaos, the counterpart of the White Guardian, a personification of order. The two Guardians balance out the forces in the universe, although the Black Guardian seems to desire to upset the balance in favour of chaos and evil while the White Guardian prefers to maintain the status quo.” (Wiki)
He took the lead role in individual episodes and in three linked serials, which some call the Black Guardian trilogy, playing opposite Peter Davison as the Doctor.
Well Hammered
We mentioned Dyall’s memorable voice, and in Hammer Horror’s film Lust for a Vampire (1971), the character Count Karnstein, played by Mike Raven, was dubbed by Valentine Dyall. He also appeared as the caretaker Mr Dudley in the outstanding 1963 film version of Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House. Sometimes just known as The Haunting, this is by far the best adaptation, and still sends shivers up the spine.
Going further back, he played a key part, Jethro Keane, in the wonderful City of the Dead (1960). The film was known as Horror Hotel in the States, and is the tale of a young student who seeks information on witchcraft for her college studies. What could possibly go wrong when she travels alone to a mist-shrouded New England village to ask if there are any witches about? Especially when your professor is an intense Christopher Lee, and the man who gets into your car is Valentine Dyall? The usual hilarity ensues…
Two film oddities in Dyall’s career remain worth noting. The first is the attempt to transfer the Man in Black idea to film, again by Hammer. The Man in Black (1949) was a British thriller film which starred Sid James. Adapted from Appointment with Fear, Dyall provided the introduction to the film, as “The Story-Teller”. Sid James, who rose to fame in the British Carry On films, plays a straight role for once, with none of his yuck-yuck dirty laughter. It received mixed reviews, but is worth a look.
His other role, which links to our interest in detectives and will lead us back to the radio, was as Dr Morelle in Dr Morelle: The case of the Missing Heiress. This was another Hammer Film, and was based on the popular long running BBC radio series written by Ernest Dudley.
Ernest Dudley (1908-2006) wrote many tales of Morelle, a psychiatrist with an interest in criminology. In the radio series, the part of Dr Morelle was taken by the silky-voiced Cecil Parker, a stalwart of British period films. It’s well worth seeking out the old-time radio recordings of A Case for Dr Morelle, as the sleuthing doctor is incredibly annoying and condescending to his secretary, Miss Frayne. They’re greatly enjoyable in a sort of ‘God, I want to slap this man’ sort of way (and for some unlikely, if not implausible, deductions).
Appointment with Fear
So we’re glued to our radios again, and Appointment with Fear. See, we know where we are – sort of. John Dickson Carr, the prolific mystery writer, was responsible for a number of the original stories and for many of the adaptations of classic tales. Given the number of series, we won’t list them all, but here are some of the adaptations which Dyall introduced:
The Pit and the Pendulum – Edgar Allan Poe
The Cask of Amontillado – Edgar Allan Poe
A Watcher by the Dead – Ambrose Bierce
The Middle Toe Of The Right Foot – Ambrose Bierce
The Monkey’s Paw – W W Jacobs
Oh Whistle And I’ll Come To You, My Lad – M R James
The Beast with Five Fingers – W F Harvey
Markheim – Robert Louis Stevenson
The Hands of Nekamen – Kathleen Hyatt
The Yellow Wallpaper – Charlotte Parkins Gilman
Mrs Amworth – E F Benson
John Dickson Carr (1906-1977) was an American, and yet his detective and mystery stories were predominantly English tales, perhaps due to his English wife and the time he spent there in the thirties and forties.
He was the creator of Dr Gideon Fell, a larger-than life investigator modelled on the author G K Chesterton. Fell is a great figure, an eccentric, corpulent cape-flapping fellow – an amateur sleuth who sees through the mistakes of the authorities. He too was made into a radio series, this time played by another classic British actor, Donald Sinden.
Carr and Dr Fell probably deserve their own article on greydogtales, so we’ll keep this short. There were 23 Dr Fell novels, and Carr wrote many other detective mysteries besides. He also wrote an authorised biography of Arthur Conan Doyle (1949), and with Doyle’s youngest son, Adrian, wrote Sherlock Holmes stories for the collection The Exploits of Sherlock Holmes (1954). Whilst musing on this, we were surprised to find that S T Joshi, a major figure in weird fiction criticism and a Lovecraftian scholar, produced a book-length critical study of Carr, John Dickson Carr: A Critical Study (1990).
Most of the recordings of Appointment with Fear have been lost, but one of the few surviving episodes is an original Carr tale, The Clock Strikes Eight, originally aired 05/18/1944.
Another example is And the Deep Shuddered, written by Monckton Hoffe, an Irish screenwriter, and aired 20/11/45, which can also be found on Youtube.
The Rest of the Man in Black
After Dyall, others took on the voice of the Man in Black. Revived as Fear on Four, the concept ran for five series on BBC Radio 4 (1988-1992), with Edward DeSouza in the key role. A fifth series was broadcast in 1997, but with no Man in Black.
The most recent revival was with Mark Gatiss reprising the role. There were four radio series featuring Gatiss between 2009 and 2011. Whilst not as sepulchral as Dyall, it’s fair to say that Gatiss does have the ability to make ordinary things sound quite unnerving, so he wasn’t a bad choice. We covered Gatiss’ recent audio version of Dracula here last year:
Come Freely, Go Safely: Dracula Returns, Scott Handcock Rules!
Although we must have missed it, apparently The Return of the Man In Black was broadcast by Radio 4 as two Archive Hour specials in October 1998. The documentaries were presented by the acclaimed horror writer Ramsey Campbell, and covered the history of fear and suspense on BBC radio. During the programmes, two complete episodes were presented: The Pit and the Pendulum (from Appointment With Fear) and The Beast With Five Fingers (from Fear On 4).
Buried under names and trivia, we leave you with Valentine Dyall, and his reading of The Pit and the Pendulum.
Sleep well…
wish i could listen

For @ilwinsgarden a little Christmas fic. Ian and Barbara attend the UNIT Christmas Party. (Hope it’s alright) :)
Ian placed Barbara’s coat around her shoulders and then helped put their son John’s seatbelt on in the back of the car.
Barbara fiddled around in her handbag. “Oh, did you remember the bottle of wine? I’d be awfully embarrassed if we didn’t bring anything.”
Ian peered in at the backseat next to John and saw it snuggled up beside their son who was now belted up and eager to go.
“Wine’s ready. I’m ready. You ready for the off little champ?” Ian said as he ruffled his son’s hair.
Barbara laughed as she and Ian got in the car and saw their young son raise his hands in the air. “Yay!”
“Just don’t drink the wine eh Johnny?” Ian said.
Barbara slapped him playfully on the arm. “Don’t give him any ideas.”
“I suppose he might take after you, like a bit of a drink.”
Ian waited for her to playfully strike him again but she just folded her arms. “I don’t think you should talk to me that way when I’m dressed like this. My costume character certainly wouldn’t accept such a comment.”
“Your costume is covered by your coat so it doesn’t get an opinion yet, and why haven’t you got your wig on either?”
“I thought I’d put it on when we got there.”
…
Party music greeted then as soon as they arrived at the town hall which was rented out for many of UNIT’s functions, and Christmas time was one occasion when the organisation went all out and held a fancy-dress event. Of course, the guest list was strict and the Chesterton’s were very pleased to be invited after their hard work with the establishment the previous year.
The Brigadier had to be persuaded year upon year to participate but everyone knew he secretly enjoyed the festivities and that he had never missed a single one.
After authorisation at the door they walked inside, and Barbara placed her wig on her head. The hall in front of them was transformed into a winter wonderland with fake snow and Christmas trees and all sorts of beautiful decorations. John didn’t know where to look, his eyes in a constant state of wonder.
As Ian hung up their coats, Jo arrived to greet Barbara and smiled warmly.
“Hi Barbara,” she said hugging her tightly and then also hugging Ian as he joined them. “Hi Ian.” She leaned down to little John and handed him a candy cane. “Here you are darling, and don’t you look gorgeous?”
She looked at the teachers. “Your costumes are fabulous. Let me guess…Cleopatra and James Bond…and even a mini James Bond. What a lovely family you are.”
Ian was about to respond to mermaid Jo when she was pulled away dramatically by Benton and Yates who were dressed as sailors. Ian couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of Jo unable to walk with her costume tail and practically being lifted by the men. He watched them leave but wondered why they seemed so very serious, whispering to one another and looking behind them before they shut the door.
“That was a bit strange,” Barbara said.
Ian scratched his chin. “Bit suspicious how she got called away just like that. Perhaps It’s a job for James Bond himself.”
Barbara laughed. “Would you like me to join you on this investigation, Bond?”
Ian kissed her hand. “My new Bond girl, Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile.”
“I think I can find time to rule an ancient land as well as helping you spy on someone.”
“Who can we leave John with?”
They both looked around the room and then saw him at the same time. “Brigadier!”
…
Barbara smiled, glancing at John as he sat next to the Brigadier at one of the tables. She wasn’t really sure why she and Ian had decided to play spies, but with a little wine inside her, and dressed like a Queen, she felt like she could achieve anything.
Ian meanwhile was watching Jo and Yates in a deep serious discussion by the exit door, having returned as quietly as they’d left. Whether they were going to the buffet table or to mingle, they kept meeting up and whispering dramatically at one another.
“That’s peculiar,” Barbara said, watching as Benton joined the couple and handed Jo a piece of paper.
“Something extra-terrestrial, you think?” Ian asked, leaning in close to his wife.
Barbara’s eyes rolled upwards. “Oh yes, well done, Bond. Aliens and UNIT, I wonder why my mind didn’t go straight to it!”
“Alright, alright, ask a silly question.”
At that moment, a waiter passed them carrying a tray of drinks and Barbara quickly grabbed each of them one, handing one to her husband.
“Here you go,” she said.
“Thank you. I hope it’s shaken, not stirred.”
“Oh Ian!” She ignored his satisfied smile and fiddled with her gold-looking headdress. “It’s fine being Cleopatra but all this fake gold is very uncomfortable. Top to toe, gold everywhere.”
Ian smiled. “Especially on that gold finger!”
“As Queen of the Nile it’s easy for me to have you escorted from the premises. Anyway, whilst you’ve been making bad jokes, I’ve been paying attention and something is definitely wrong. Our friends have gone again, almost vanished into thin air.”
“Shall we take a look…access all areas?”
Barbara nodded, grabbed his arm and they discreetly disappeared behind the double doors that led to the kitchens.
“Where did they all get to? Do you think the Brigadier’s been informed and what was on that paper?” Ian said.
Barbara peered back around the door and spied another UNIT officer playing with some toys with John at the table. “The Brigadier’s gone too and John appears to have a new playmate. Look, perhaps its not our place to get involved.”
Ian smiled. “Might be interfering in something best left alone eh?”
Barbara grinned. “Well, I suppose some things work out for the best by knowing the details, and besides as Queen of the Nile its my right to be informed of possible danger. After you, Bond.”
…
It had been a long time since the Chesterton’s had done any detective work and so they found themselves clinging onto each other just like old times. They decided to sneak behind the scenes and see if they could find out what was going on, realising that wandering the corridors reminded them of their time on the space-ship where they encountered the Sensorites. Unlike then however, they spotted the Brigadier lurking suspiciously and followed him to a room where he, Jo, Benton, Yates and two other UNIT employees disappeared inside and locked the door. There was a glass panel above the top of the door and so they couldn’t reach the window to see what was happening.
“Well we could knock on the door and ask?” Barbara reasoned.
“And be asked to leave before we find out anything juicy? No, we’ll have to use our spying skills and look in?”
“Spying skills?”
“You climb on my back and we’ll look through that glass. See if you can take a peek at any top-secret files.”
Barbara looked at Ian and sighed. “I don’t think I can climb on your back in this outfit. We’ll just have to look around in another room, gather some evidence of our own.”
“Room 007?”
“Ian, if you don’t be quiet I’ll make sure this Bond adventure is your last.”
…
They made their way into the adjourning room, which was completely dark, bar a small opening coming in from behind a slightly open curtain. Crashing in to each other, they made it priority number one to find a light switch. Barbara found it after several minutes feeling along the walls in the black.
She jumped back in surprise when the light returned, not realising Ian had been standing quite so close.
“Thank god for that,” Ian said, before quickly drawing their attention back to the door in the centre which was adjacent to the mysterious room they wanted to get inside.
Barbara paused for a moment. “Do you think we’re being silly, is it really our place to get involved?”
Ian hesitated for a brief minute. He adjusted his bow-tie and sighed. “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve just missed it.”
“Me too,” Barbara said softly, giving her husband a sympathetic smile, “oh Ian, are we pathetic?”
Ian pulled her close to him and cuddled her tightly, wrapping his arms around her. Whenever she was in his arms it felt as if everything was alright in the world.
He smiled. “I’m afraid we are pathetic, Barbara, but I still love you. And I still want to know what’s going on. I mean, we’re only human after all.”
She bit her lip with excitement and they raced to the door, crouching down and then slowly rising and peering through the glass like two excited children. Through the pane of glass, the Brigadier and his team appeared to be crowded around a table reading over some papers.
“Damn, we still can’t hear,” Ian said, clicking his fingers in defeat.
“Really? I thought you’d have a gadget for every probability?”
Ian smirked. “Not in this particular suit.”
“Wait a minute,” Barbara said as she pulled a ladder away from the wall near them, “there’s a vent here, I can make out words.”
Ian rubbed her back as she climbed up the ladder. “Well done Miss Moneypenny! But I thought you couldn’t move in that outfit.”
“Desperate times call for desperate measures!” She balanced on the top rung of the ladder and listened carefully. Silence.
“Well, what are they saying?” Ian whispered.
Barbara sighed and whispered back. “Well, I don’t know. I missed it because you were asking what they were saying.”
“Sorry, go ahead.”
She listened carefully once more and then gasped.
“What is it?!” Ian asked.
“Can you see the Brigadier? He’s talking about the top-secret mission going according to plan.”
“And?”
“Well, Yates just said that plan to get them away was in full swing.”
“Get who away?”
“Jo is saying something about how they can’t reveal anything until he arrives.”
“Who’s he?”
“Well, I don’t know Ian. They’re just saying it like that. You don’t have to repeat my findings.”
“Its not the Master is it?” Ian shuddered at the thought.
“Now they’re talking about something called code…code…Oh I can’t hear its… Satan maybe?” But as Barbara struggled to lean in to listen, she fell off the step and went tumbling right into Ian Chesterton’s arms.
“Hear anything on the fall down, Cleo?” Ian said as he placed Barbara firmly on the ground.
She straightened herself out. “Oh, it’s no use, Ian. Maybe we’re not cut out for this. All I could get was there’s an operation under way right now and that the aliens or whatever are being escorted or something and well…they can’t announce it until some official arrives maybe?”
“Good assumptions, Barbara,” Ian said rubbing his chin. “Let’s go and check on John and then we can have a think about what our action plan is. If UNIT needs our help than we have to do what we can.”
“I agree.”
…
Arriving back at the main function hall, the Chesterton’s were shocked to find the room was empty except the grand Christmas tree and all the decorations laid out. Everything was as it was left- food half-eaten, wine left in glasses, streamers strewn across the floor.
“What happened?” Barbara said. “Was everyone evacuated whilst we were snooping?”
“Or worse…Barbara what if they were taken?”
“Taken, by whom?”
“By whatever thing the team have supposedly under control. What if he’s got them too?”
“Ian? Where’s John?”
Barbara felt she was going to crumble to the ground at the thought of John being snatched from her and Ian was ready to kill whoever had a hold of his son. They were looking around them, spinning around, surveying every area of the room when suddenly the doors sprung open and a man wearing a Father Christmas outfit entered the area carrying a small and gleeful boy in his arms.
“John!” Ian and Barbara cried in joyful unison.
“Mummy, Daddy, I’ve met Father Christmas!”
“So we can see!” Barbara said, half-excited for him and half surprised by the strange guest.
Ian leaned in to Barbara and whispered. “Who is that?”
“I don’t know.”
“Ah there you two are,” Father Christmas said with a deep and gravelly voice as he settled John on the floor. “My good friends at UNIT have kindly allowed us a few moments.”
“The Master?” Ian said, staring horrified at the man and pushing Barbara and John behind him.
The man laughed. “Oh, no, no, he’s not popped up yet. He hates Christmas, avoids it at all costs. Can’t say I blame him entirely, what chap of our level of intellect doesn’t? Well, anyway, merry Christmas Chesterton’s, or should I say Chesterton, Ian Chesterton? You know some say I was the inspiration for 007. And ah the brilliant Cleopatra. I met her once you know, the real one of course.” He kissed Barbara’s hand. “You make a charming replacement, my dear.”
“Sorry, who are you?” Ian said, yanking the beard away and pulling off the santa hat.
“Why it’s me!” He sounded offended.
“You’re not…the Doctor?” Barbara could barely say the words. She’d known from UNIT that he’d changed but she wasn’t quite sure what she expected him to look like.
“Doctor, it’s you, here for Christmas?” she said.
“It is, my dear. Why don’t we all have a nice glass of wine?” He called in the other guests and the room flocked with all the party-goers from before.
“We got you!” Jo shrieked as she joined them and kissed Ian, leaving a big lipstick mark on his cheek.
“You mean this was all planned?” Ian said.
“We knew you’d be curious,” Yates said. “But we wanted to keep the Doctor a surprise so we kept it hush hush.”
Barbara laughed. “Oh I do feel silly. Ian and I were running about playing Bond and Cleo.”
“Just as it should be. If you hadn’t had followed Susan, we’d never have met,” the Doctor said, shaking hands with Ian.
Benton held out his hand to Barbara. “Care to dance Mrs. Chesterton?”
“Oh, I’d love to Sergeant.”
Ian watched as Barbara went to boogie with Benton and then took Jo’s hand. The Doctor scooped John onto his knee and they sat and watched the festivities.
Yates winked at the Brigadier. “Fancy a dance, Brigadier?”
“Buy me a drink first, Yates, and we’ll talk about it.”

Wishlist !! Of Sorts ??
Admitting that I actually want anything is kind of disgusting I’m so not gonna lie.
Less of a Wishlist (though there will be a wishlist tag included in the post, shockingly, that’s my Wishlist tag for everything else as well). And more of a Wanted Connections post. Not just for shipping- love any fun and/or fucky family dynamics, as well as anything else platonic or under the sun.
However! As long as the vibes are right I can ship pretty much anything. If you ship it I probably do too, just hit me up about it and we can talk / yell about the whole thing.
Ships ; Thoschei / The Doctor & The Master Amy Pond & Rory Williams Amy Pond & Rory!Master The Doctor or Theta & The Doctor if the vibe is right The Master or Koschei & The Master if the vibe is right (or morel likely so wrong) Open to practically anything else, as long as the vibes are there and/or we discuss it beforehand <33 Susan Foreman (General)** ; The Doctor ; The Master ; The Rani ; Braxiatel ; Any Time Lords ; Barbara Wright ; Ian Chesterton ; David or Alex Campbell(unlikely, a boy can dream) ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc In general always looking to give Susan new friends, and potential ships while she learns how to Person. And always, always looking to throw her / get a Doctor or Master thrown at her. Always here for the family drama. The Master (General)** ; The Doctor ; The Master ; Any Companions ; Amy Pond ; Rory Williams ; River Song ; The Rani ; Susan Foreman ; Any Time Lords ; Theta Sigma ; Koschei Oakdown ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc To no shock at all, absolutely the most active with Doctors. Rory!Master is usually the most active, for better or for worse, and most Amy, Rory, or River interactions are mostly with him in mind. Giving this idiot a companion, though….. The Doctor (General) ; The Master ; The Doctor ; Any Companions ; Susan Foreman ; Braxiatel ; Romana ; Any Time Lords ; Koschei Oakdown ; Theta Sigma ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc
To no shock at all, absolutely the most active with Masters. Honestly, probably my lowest activity main muse, just to be honest. Rory Williams (General)** ; Amy Pond ; The Doctor ; The Master ; River Song ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc Almost always written as being a fobwatched Master. When he’s Rory he’s Rory, though. Always down for Amy and the Doctor and River (pre and post watch) and also always curious about the Master.
Mirror Theta & Koschei (General)** ; The Doctor ; The Master ; The Rani ; Any Companions ; Any Other Time Lords ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc
I write Theta & Koschei with the potential of any New Who (and Classic, too, really) Doctor/Master faces— usually with the assumption of matching the Doctor or Master’s regeneration in-timeline. Can be any incarnations though, if you don’t want to match (assuming a Doctor, Master, or companion.) Johnny Chesterton (General) ; Susan Foreman ; Barbara Wright ; Ian Chesterton ; The Doctor ; Anyone Else / OCs / Etc
#wishlist !#about; deathxproof#god i’m doing so many things#character; the master(rory!master)#character; the master#character; rory williams#character; susan foreman#character; the doctor#character; johnny chesterton#character; mirror theta & koschei

Get To Know Johnny Chesterton!
Originally inspired by mention of a character in a handful of Doctor Who Novels, John/Johnny Chess. This is very, very much not that Johnny.
FC is Colin Morgan. Age varies. A 20-24 year old nonbinary punk-folk-punk-whiny-emo-adjacent musician in 21st century London, England. Born to ex-time traveling parents Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, who, according to those around them, ‘hadn’t aged since the 1960s’ when they were born. They were told about the Doctor and Susan Foreman like parents do when they talk about friends from their childhood.
They’re roughly 20 when Susan 4 shows up at their parents’ doorstep. Johnny largely travels with Susan 5. They’re best friends. Hearts.

Like.
All death and rejection and feeling lost for most of her life before finally going “… I wonder how Barbara and Ian are doing.” Hi There. I didn’t know where else to go. It’s me, the girl, the one you probably thought you’d never see again. Yeah, don’t— Don’t worry about the faces or the man you saw me off with and the family and also wherever my Grandfather is. That’s not important. How are you? How are you guys? You’re my only friends or family left in this world! Please don’t ask about how much has changed! I am going to become best friends with your only child. We are going to be attached at the hip. I’m going to feel responsible for the wellbeing and keeping of your entire family now. I hate holding still but I’m keeping a job in your timeline and setting up my TARDIS in my little office just to stay close to you. Nothing is wrong. Stop looking at me like that. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Please don’t leave me and please don’t let anything happen to you ever ever ever.
thinking about Susan 4 & 5 and the Chestertons again.

So important for me to be thrown off and jarred and bemused while looking up some piece of information I decided to pick up for my muses from an audio I half-listened-to once when I was maybe 16 and get humbled by them having SO much more new information that I simply either didn’t pick up at the time, or did not exist in written format for me to remember, OR there is New Content. Like. The ‘Divergent’ part of Canon Divergent with Susan Foreman is doing so much heavy lifting. But I also know there’s such a low chance of the majority of you having ever listened to the audios featuring Alex Campbell that I’m just gonna continue to do whatever I want with Susan’s timelines and relationships. I love playing blackout poetry with canon. <333
#ooc !#maybe i’ll actually listen to them in their entirety one day. who’s to say.#I probably should just for Susan. add Earthly Child and To The Death to the list I guess.#sometimes minor doctor who characters exist for me to use them like little dolls. not that I rp Alex or David Campbell#but like. see also: johnny chesterton

Very much need to sit down and write the little scene banging around in my head of Susan 4 or 5 sitting on the floor of her TARDIS with Johnny Chesterton maybe a couple times after hanging out with them as an adult person rather than the little baby child her friends had around. Both decompressing a bit after a fun little mildly-near-death experience until Johnny is finally just “yeah so um. who ARE you.” and when she goes into her ramble ramble about “yeah I’m from a different planet my grandfather took me here and I lived with my husband and my kids and—“ they’re eventually like “no no, I want to know who Susan is. If I’m going to potentially get got next to Susan Foreman I want to know who she is and what she likes and what she does for fun when she’s not poking at symbolic buttons in ancient alien civilizations to see what they do”.
The few moments of Susan sitting there like uh oh. Oh boy. Uh oh. Uh oh oh no. She’s been staving off existential crises for the better part of three centuries now. When she’s not simply running from The Horrors who does she let herself be for real. She was thrust into running away with the Doctor and decided to make the active choice to stay with him. She was thrust into living and surviving with David Campbell and decided to make the active choice to love him and start a family with him. She was thrust into a life with big empty spaces where her husband and children used to be and decided to make the active choice to keep to herself. How does she feel more like her own person and not just something that happens to someone.
Johnny reels this all in by standing up and deciding “You know what?? This is fine because: you’re going to choose your own identity and personality for your own self here and now. There are some good bones here. We’re going to build a Susan.”
(It’s also why Johnny is also a big proponent of “if you’re going to be spending so much time in this period of Earth please get a job to fill your time please please” effort that their parents are pushing. Barbara and Ian recognize the behavior as self destructive and Johnny is simply determined to make their friend her own person.)
#I loveee Susan and Johnny. Giving her a built in friend that ISNT Barbara or Ian this face was the best decision for me and her.#However if anyone wants to write a thread/etc in a similar flavor….. I aggressively wouldn’t be opposed…. 👀👀#Make no mistake Susan has a personality. She just. Feels like a shell of a person sometimes(a lot of time).#Her whole life has felt like situations she was forced into that she felt she had control over bc she eventually chose to stick with them.#She is fully on her own for the first time without like. Full on isolation. She’s 300-400something w no strong sense of self in her mind.#character: susan foreman#musings#character: johnny chesterton
