Romance: Emmrich S2

Class: Mage (Yes, just that, I'm still learning)

Her real name has long been forgotten, even by herself. Her parents? She doesn't even know who they are. Belladonna was bought by the Crows when she hadn't even lost her baby teeth. The only thing she remembers about that day were two strangers with blurred faces walking away while she was taken away. But despite all the training, all the sweat and all the blood, Belladonna managed to be one of the best at what she did. She had a charisma and charm that could make any target fall at her feet, and one of her favorite ways to eliminate her targets was with poison, which is why she received this name from her fellow Crows.

Belladonna has always had a strange appreciation for death since she was very young. It's no wonder that she and Emmrich became close so quickly. Unlike many of the Crows she worked with, Belladonna always tried to put the utmost respect in the deaths of her targets.

For a moment since she managed to escape the sight of the Antaam, Belladonna thought she would never be able to prove her worth to the Crows again, well... That was until she met Varric in that tavern.

Kept thinking about this absolutely feral fandom declaring that they would obliterate Emmrich's pelvis.

The ornamentation on the back of his overcoat is a gilded representation of the iliac crest, sacrum, and coccyx of the male pelvis.

This decoration is joined to the front of the coat via deep scarlet cords, giving a nod to blood as that which connects/disconnects the mortal frame to life.

From the back, the entire coat looks like an opulent exploded diagram of a skeleton, with the spine represented as a series of buttons, and the rigid shoulder guards representing the wing-like scapulae, flared out to show the ribs:

The straps holding together the tails of the coat call back to stitches, neat but stark, like those of the wounded dead put together reverently for their final rest.

The front of the coat is SO interesting, because it presents this open autopsy view in rich colors, accented with gold, so that the effect of skin and muscle being peeled back for study, the ribcage broken and splayed, doesn't feel gruesome at all. Because of the person wearing it, his generosity of spirit, the effect of the coat is that the viewer is invited to study death up close, to be curious about this part of life, to understand it until it doesn't scare them.

It's worth it to mention, too, how many chains and ropes Emmrich is displaying. Apart from the red cords, there is the chain for his collar pin, three chains running into/from four different pockets on his vest, a chain connecting bracelets or cuffs on his wrist, and several more chains attaching in various places on his belt.

Yes, they are utilitarian, but they are also symbolic of a person attached to their work by a strong resolve, by guilt, or by some other unbreakable compulsion. As far as I know, there aren't watches of any kind in Thedas, much less pocket watches, so what is Emmrich keeping in those little pockets? Does the Mourn Watch use a magical tether on spirits, such as whatever coins or talismans are at the ends of those chains?

I love this design so much.

can't wait to see people draw Davrin in all sorts of heroic poses fit for illustrations of Arthurian legends, Bellara in pretty pastel sundresses, Emmrich wearing nothing but copious amounts of gold jewelry, Taash in bodybuilder poses (and shirts with the sleeves cut off and the sides scooped), Harding in the coziest of furs, Neve in suits and posed like a Leyendecker illustration, and Lucanis lit like a Rembrandt looking menacingly back over his shoulder, and for everyone to be so fucking correct

Is anyone else running laps around their enclosure about Emmrich and his healer sensibilities, because greeting death as a friend instead of an enemy would not only allow you to give someone the compassion of death with dignity, but also study the body and all its workings with curiosity and kindness instead of treating it with shame or disgust and I just-
