sorry i’m just thinking again about kaz brekker, perpetual cynic, and his surprisingly optimistic view of fathers and sons. just. kaz knowing that the one thing that would ruin pekka rollins, the man he hates more than anything, who he couldn’t think less of, would be to threaten the safety of his son. kaz telling jesper that his father cares more about him than any farm. kaz saying “call me sentimental, but i didn’t believe a father could be so callous.” kaz’s fatal misunderstanding of van eck being that he couldn’t conceive of a world in which fathers don’t love their sons. thinking about what all this says about kaz’s own father, and everything he lost before he and jordie ever stepped foot in ketterdam.

Cartoon with identical looking boy/girl twins that's self-aware of the fact this implies one is trans, and keeps the audience guessing as to which one it is.

The girl laments that her friends are buying bras and her chest is still flat. The boy keeps his t-shirt on the whole time at the beach. Neither of them like using public toilets. The girl always seems to be eating pickles. The boy is giving himself an injection... But it turns out he's diabetic and it's his insulin. Oh look, one of them has a trans flag pin! But so does the other one, because the cis sibling is a very enthusiastic ally.

Bonus points if the twins are aware of this and confusing people on purpose.

A Note on Watchespart 1 / part 2 / part 3

was watching Conclave with my friend and being a watch nerd, he notes:

Lawrence

Lawrence was wearing something like an Orient Bambino (possibly passed down). Watches like that are from the eighties.

Clearly, it's not embellished, and worn over time. A used Orient Bambino exudes decorum without being flashy. Pragmatic and cultured.

Bellini

Bellini's watch was quite simple as well.

Potentially an Omega De Ville or more likely a classic Seiko Dolce. Also an old model, implying that he's worn it for some time.

(Apparently, the Omega De Ville doesn't have the same angles) Regardless, people who opt for tank faces (square watches) tend to be ambitious. Simultaneously, they want to project humility.

'He's been doing all the right things to get what he wants,' says my friend. 'He's been curating his image.'

Benitez

Benitez's Casio f-91w is a functional watch.

'It exists just to do its job,' says my friend (Nate). 'No fanfare. It tells time and like [Benitez's] character, it's not trying to show up anybody. It just does its job.'

Considering this Casio costs 12 TIMES less than Bellini's Seiko Dolce, you might think this is a humble watch.

But it's not even that. It's an 'I exist' watch.

Additional note: Some people have said Benitez is wearing a Casio F-105, but my friend disagrees. Benitez’s watch face is too large (sorry for the typo) SMALL to be the F-105. Regardless, both the Casio models tell us the same thing about Benitez's character.

Additional note 2: Casio f-91w is apparently considered a god-tier watch, which is above luxury watches. It's earned that ranking because:

It's battery lasts for 10 years

It keeps time accurately

It has alarm & date function (both 12h or 24h)

It has a backlight

Water resistance for up to 30m

It can stand a tough beating.

It's versatile. You can wear it with a suit or overalls. Anything.

It's cheap, i.e. easily accessible. Just like God.

It has an annual sales of 3 mil units per year, making it the most sold watch in the world.

Side note: The current Pope (Francis) wears a Casio MQ-24-7bldf, which has similar connotations as Benitez's. The only difference being that Pope Francis's Casio is analogue while Benitez's watch is digital, showing the role age plays in preference. Both watches are hella cheap, but Benitez's watch is a tad more expensive by virtue of being digital and having more features like an alarm and backlight function, which better fits his situation in Kabul.

I love Raph and haven’t said that enough so to be more specific I love that Raph is a soft boy who loves bear plushies, a gross boy who eats an assortment of things that are definitely better left alone, a smart boy who is more than capable of taking down villains through planning and fortitude alike, a strong boy who is dedicated to training his muscles and fighting prowess, a teenage boy who loves his brothers but is more than happy to tease and roughhouse with them, an angry boy who sometimes lets his anger take a hold of him to cover the fear, a gentle boy who is generous with hugs and affirmations to those he loves, a capable boy who takes on more than should ever be expected of a teenager, a good boy who just wants to be a hero and slowly comes to realize the cost of that duty, a good boy who has no reservations about putting himself in the way of harm coming to his family, a good boy who’s a great brother and son and person and deserves only the best the world has to offer.

1) This felt like the most obvious group. The boys, the girls, and Jenny (😂 who is an adult, thank you very much, and would absolutely object to being grouped together with a bunch of teenagers).

2) I like these characters, and I enjoy rotating them around gently in the blorbo tumbler in my mind.

3) I don’t hate them, but it’s complicated.

-He’s a cat. He hasn’t done anything too heinous (although I do love Edwin, he should probably have tried bribery at least once before using magic, especially since he already knew that cats are bad news for ghosts 🤷‍♀️), so I don’t hate him. I just don’t particularly care either.

-The Night Nurse is, at heart, a bureaucrat and for that she will always raise my hackles a bit. But, she likes Kashi, she opens the door to hell for Charles, and she let Niko read her rule book which helped her find a way to keep the boys safe. Also, she totally ships Payneland. 😁

-Lilith is…fine? Like, I do love that she gets to be a literal deus ex machina. But, she gave a vindictive witch a shitty version of immortality and then apparently never checked up on her to see what she was doing with it? Put a magical air tag on the people you give powers to and check in on them every few decades or so to make sure they’re not turning evil, it can’t be that hard.

-The Cat King. I have lots of feelings about him, and they are constantly shifting around. I would like to see more of him. I am putting him in the blorbo tumbler, at max speed. 😈

4) I think these are very interesting characters, who serve many narrative purposes. I would very much like to punch them. 😁

5) Bite, bite, bite, kill, kill, kill. 👿
