Just Dinner

“You’re burning the food!” Peter called out, an evil little cackle in his voice that no one would ever believe him capable of.

Peter was, as far as everyone else was concerned, a veritable angel. 

“You could help,” Tony grumbled, grabbing the pot of burning noodles and taking them off the heat.

Peter appeared at his side, smothering the small spurt of flame with a towel. “It’s your date,” Peter pointed out, with all the sass that a teenage boy could possess. “Doesn’t that mean it’s your job to do all the work?”

“It’s not a date.” It was far more important than that. Tony put a hand on his hip, turning to look at Peter with his most severe look. Peter was not at all quailed. But then, he never was. “Do you want me to succeed or not?” He waved to the burned noodles. “Because this isn’t really a ringing endorsement for Stephen to stick around.”

Peter considered it for a long moment before nodding. “I’ll fix the noodles, you do the meat and the vegetables.”

Tony shifted to the side as Peter threw away the burnt noodles and pulled out more from Tony’s pantry.

“You don’t need to be nervous, you know,” Peter said in an annoyingly practical tone.

Tony rolled his eyes, nudging Peter out of the way so he could grab a pan for the meat. “I know.”

“Stephen really likes you,” Peter said, tone reassuring. “Almost sickeningly so, actually.”

“I know that, too.” Stephen wasn’t the sort to mince words or feign emotions. Which meant that Tony always knew when Stephen was being genuine. He knew how Stephen felt about him.

Stephen liked him. Loved him. Trusted him. The important things.

“He’s going to say yes,” Peter added.

Tony certainly hoped so, but Stephen seemed to live to either subvert or exceed people’s expectations. It was impossible to know exactly how Stephen would react to anything.

Which made this whole thing nerve wracking.

“As long as I don’t serve him something inedible,” Tony said lightly, distracting from that particular thought.

Peter gave him an affronted look. “I can cook.”

Barely.

The thing was Tony could cook. Most of the time, at least. But apparently his nerves had gotten the best of him. Which was ridiculous. He had no reason to be nervous. He’d fought aliens, not once, but twice. Had created a new element while dying. Had been blown up who knew how many times—not him.

The point was. Dinner with Stephen wasn’t exactly a good reason to be nervous. He’d eaten with Stephen plenty of times.

He just normally wasn’t asking Stephen to marry him.

That was the sort of thing that only happened once. Hopefully, at least. He didn’t put it past him and Stephen to get caught in some sort of time loop that involved multiple marriage proposals.

That sort of thing happened to Stephen and these days Tony got pulled in to more and more ridiculous scenarios.

Not that he minded. Not when it was Stephen.

“Mr. Stark!” Peter’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “You’re going to burn the meat!”

Tony cursed, pulling the meat off the stove. He poked at it with a fork, shifting it around. “It looks… edible,” he decided. Maybe a little charred, but that just gave it flavor.

Peter gave it a doubtful look. “Hopefully Doctor Strange thinks so too.”

Stephen had always given the attitude of being a bit of a food snob, but Tony had never known him to actually turn something down.

“It’ll be fine.” He hoped.

“Boss, Doctor Strange has arrived,” FRIDAY announced.

Well, Tony thought despondently, that meant that the meat had better be good enough, because they didn’t have time for anything more. 

He waved at Peter. “Go say hi. I’ll… finish this.” He waved at the food. “And then you’re going home. I do not need an audience for this.”

Peter scampered off. “Doctor Strange!” His voice was bright and chipper. “Mr. Stark burned the noodles!”

Tony heard Stephen’s low tones responding to Peter’s absolutely unnecessary exchange of information.

Tony breathed in as he threw the food on to two plates.

It was just dinner with Stephen.

Where he was going to ask Stephen to marry him.

No big deal, right? Because Stephen loved him and Tony loved Stephen and that was an important place to start.

Tony was as cool as a cat, completely unbothered, totally in control of his emotions.

He had this.

Chapter 2: Cross Walks and Crossed Hearts

Stephen did everything in his power not to miss another session with Pepper Potts after his last conversation with Tony, and he just managed to do so. (Though admittedly, the session three days ago was performed after only three hours of sleep. Thankfully, the mapping of the anomaly's path within the reticular formation was easy enough with the help of some caffeine.) Each session was half the time that he originally planned in late December, but the need to conserve his reserves was very real, and "saving" this map between sessions took no small amount of power.

That day, Tony wasn't actually present for the session, having some work-dinner function with S.I. at the same time Stephen was available. Happy Hogan was around, though. The bodyguard still tossed him the occasional suspicious look, but Stephen was fairly certain he was posturing more than anything—though he wouldn't leave Stephen alone with Pepper without Tony around. What exactly did he think he'd do, anyway?

Maybe it was the smell of burning meat on the pyre in the middle of the desert that did it for her.  The motel manager Jarod shot thought charred human flesh and gasoline was a grilled steak.  Personally, he had never seen much resemblance between this and barbecue, but maybe he was the strange one.

“I never noticed a difference,” he told her, his eyes still fixed on the flames.  If anything, his appetite was a little worse than it had been before he started killing, but it wasn’t enough for him to be worried about it.  He still ate, but he didn’t derive pleasure from it, only doing it so he could keep going.

Finally, he wrenched his attention away from the fire and looked at A.K.I., perplexed.  “Weird way you got of asking a man to dinner.”

Yeah I've heard this rumor going around. It'd be great to get Kamar-Taj culture fleshed out (I mean, so long as it's like, done properly. With the writers Disney hires, it really is a hit or miss).

I wonder how "inspired by" it'll be, since Strange Academy has like Dormammu's son as one of the characters lmao. I wonder how many chars they'll actually take from the comic.

Also, for the sake of all that's good in this world, Stephen should be a side character for at *least* one episode. And by side character, I mean part of the plot and not just a cameo. Please. You can afford it Disney.
