Chapter 2: Cross Walks and Crossed Hearts

Stephen did everything in his power not to miss another session with Pepper Potts after his last conversation with Tony, and he just managed to do so. (Though admittedly, the session three days ago was performed after only three hours of sleep. Thankfully, the mapping of the anomaly's path within the reticular formation was easy enough with the help of some caffeine.) Each session was half the time that he originally planned in late December, but the need to conserve his reserves was very real, and "saving" this map between sessions took no small amount of power.

That day, Tony wasn't actually present for the session, having some work-dinner function with S.I. at the same time Stephen was available. Happy Hogan was around, though. The bodyguard still tossed him the occasional suspicious look, but Stephen was fairly certain he was posturing more than anything—though he wouldn't leave Stephen alone with Pepper without Tony around. What exactly did he think he'd do, anyway?

Maybe it was the smell of burning meat on the pyre in the middle of the desert that did it for her.  The motel manager Jarod shot thought charred human flesh and gasoline was a grilled steak.  Personally, he had never seen much resemblance between this and barbecue, but maybe he was the strange one.

“I never noticed a difference,” he told her, his eyes still fixed on the flames.  If anything, his appetite was a little worse than it had been before he started killing, but it wasn’t enough for him to be worried about it.  He still ate, but he didn’t derive pleasure from it, only doing it so he could keep going.

Finally, he wrenched his attention away from the fire and looked at A.K.I., perplexed.  “Weird way you got of asking a man to dinner.”

summary ; after a long and arduous five years apart, reader and stephen reunite and spend some well-needed quality time together [angst -> fluff]

the last five years had been nothing short of hell for the young (not-quite) widow/er, being forced to keep up a facade of loose competency and put-togetherness as they navigated the post-snap world and undertook the responsibilities left behind by their spouse. of course, having wong by their side made things less difficult than they could’ve been, but their world felt no less bleak and hopeless and downright isolating in their lover’s absence - despite how compassionate and patient their friend had been. it just wasn’t quite enough; he wasn’t stephen.

their every waking moment had been consumed with the thought of their partner: how to get him back, what he’d planned, where he and the others had gone during the snap, if he was actually gone or if he’d somehow survived

hoping beyond hope that everything would be okay; that he’d come waltzing through the door or some portal with his usual, over-confident smirk and a low compliment to them - that he was still alive, or that he’d known a way to get back when he dissipated

but every single time their hopes were dashed, leaving them to sleep in a cold, half empty bed and ruminate in the icy dread that his absence had left in their soul and mind

trying to find a way to save everyone - to save him - and falling short each time as the answers weren’t coming to them. they weren’t enough; they weren’t stephen

and, as more time passed, and as wong slowly stopped entertaining their fantasies, they began to lose hope and redirected their focus onto serving and protecting the sanctum and the freshly named sorcerer supreme (a title that felt too bittersweet to ever address their dear friend by - and, thankfully, he understood)

but they fulfilled their duties with a renewed vigour and unchallenged dedication, leaving them as one of the most reliable master of the mystic arts remaining post-snap; a much needed and useful distraction from what they were going through

it was when they were performing some of their more monotonous daily duties around the sanctum, in fact, when they first heard the telltale sizzling of a portal being opened - turning sharply on their heel to address their guest with rehearsed politeness before stopping dead in their tracks

they could hardly believe their eyes when they saw him; covered in dust and debris with a distinctly charred tear in his cloak, but just as handsome as the last day they saw him. he was finally home, their stephen was home - a dream come true, and they didn’t wait to see if it really was too good to be reality.

clinging to him like he’d disappear from their arms the moment they let go, and burying their tearful smiling face in his chest, they greeted him - running at him with such a force that his cloak was just barely able to stop him from collapsing to the ground

“i’m so sorry,” he repeated over and over again, pressing his lips to the top of their head and holding them as close as he possibly could to himself; his mind drowning in guilt from just how much he’d hurt them

but they swiftly and shakily shot down his explanations and apologies, pulling back just enough so that they could pull him into an impassioned and well-overdue kiss before muttering a quiet “you’re home now; that’s all that matters” against him

and home he was, welcomed back with a warmness he’d missed as they guided him through the neatly kept (and thrice renovated) sanctum, recalling everything that had happened since he had been dusted - and never straying more than an arms length from him (something for which he was deeply glad for)

they moved through the atrium and library before settling in the sitting room, finding a place together on a plush chair that had been unused since he left - stephen pulling them down to sit on his lap as he leaned back and made himself comfortable

one arm was wrapped loosely around their waist, rubbing absentminded circles into their hips with the pads of his thumbs whilst his other hand caressed the side of their face - tracing every new scar, wrinkle, bruise and mark that had appeared

gentleness was rare from stephen, and quiet moments like this were even rarer for the couple, but after what felt like an eternity apart, this was more than needed

whispered “i love you”s were exchanged in earnest and kisses were freely given between them: peppering eyelids, cheeks, necks and lips with gestures that got gradually deeper and more passionate as dreary day faded into silent night - not that either cared, too caught up in the presence of their spouse to notice

it didn’t matter; they were home and everything was right in the world once again

until the next threat reared it’s head - but that could wait until tomorrow; there were far more important things to concern themselves with for the time being

DS MOM worries settling in :(

I posted this elsewhere and got no bites so I'm posting it here because I need either comfort or "yeah you're doomed" feedback.

So, I'm trying not to read too much into this article link. It regards the production process of MoM and while the article itself says nothing about the content of the film, I'm gonna put a "read more" cut for safety. But hopefully there's a couple people here who don't mind reading MoM articles and have thoughts! Thoughts: I admit that my nerves go from fearful trepidation to enormous excitement with every teaser, article, and so on. It's a large emotional roller coaster.

I wouldn't be so worried if I wasn't burnt by Endgame, but since that happened, I am definitely worried a bit about this film. Lots of opinions about possible production scenarios next.

Best case scenario regarding reshoots: Marvel is always tweaking the story of the wide universe and so they just needed to get some things reshot to make sure things coincided. And that's what's being reshot. Feige, who seems to be a big Stephen fan if his involvement in the What If episode is any indication, as well as being present at Benedict Cumberbatch's Hollywood star ceremony, helped craft Stephen's integrity in this film so his story didn't get overwhelmed by cameos.

Middle ground scenario: In the rewriting and cameo process of creating a grand tale, Stephen's story was originally lost. The reshoots in December solved most of these problems.

Bad case scenario: The Marvel team is so thrilled with how well NWH did that they want to utterly stuff the movie with cameos and have completely lost sight of the fact that this is Stephen's movie. He ends up having as much screen time as the next biggest character (likely Wanda) a la Steve and Tony in CA:CW. He still has some sort of character arc despite the lack of screen time, but not nearly as fleshed out as it could be.

Worst case scenario: the test screenings in the fall did absolutely awful to the point that they had to scrap and rewrite a large part of the story, which they filmed in December. They get something middling to acceptable ready, then stuff it with cameos to appease fans. Stephen's arc is utterly laughable and almost non existent, and he turns into a supporting char in his own film.

I'm going insane wondering which case it will be. I just don't want to get my hopes up.
