All things considered this isn't what you were expecting to wake up to when you went to bed. One minute you're on your phone, trying to pass out, and the next? You're here. You've had some interesting greetings in your life, but dropping about six feet and having twelve guns leveled at your face? That takes the cake

You could be having a worse day, you think, as you stare at the interrogation table you're cuffed to. They could've shot you the second you fell the six feet from the sky into a random army base. That's a very real thing that could've happened.
But no, you just had a dozen guns pointed at you in one moment and a slew of questions you didn't have satisfying answers for.
No, you had no idea how you got there. You'd been in bed tooling around on your phone and then you were falling.
They asked who you worked for, and were not impressed by your mundane answer. You didn't work for some pmc or intelligence organization. You asked them to their faces if they thought you could pass a PT test if you tried. Not that they answered or appreciated your point, mind.
It was only after you gave them whatever identifying information you had that things got… spicy.
"I would love to tell you what this designation of yours is if you tell me what you mean. Is it like a classification of civilian versus enlisted? Is it physical? Is it your horoscope? I don't know what I don't know," you explain again for the Nth time. You didn't wanna play twenty questions but here you fuckin were, captive audience and all.
The man asking you questions had lost his charming good cop look. He was getting more and more annoyed on this one, "your designation," a demand, not a question and sure as shit not an answer.
"Again, would love to tell you! I don't know what you mean! Feels like some kinda Star Wars thing," you grumble the last bit to yourself but the man cocks his head.
His eyes narrow, "what are… Star Wars, you said?"
You blink owlishly, "beg pardon?"
"Star War. Clarify."
It's your turn for your brow to furrow, and furrow it does, "Star Wars? As in the multi-billion dollar franchise created by George Lucas and eventually sold to Disney," your tone is questioning, just shy of asking if the guy lived under a rock but his expression didn't let up and the last thing you needed was bad cop, so you continued, "the story of what happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away? The political space series of movies versus Star Trek's more scientific and discovery based longstanding TV show? Nine major movies and the Clone Wars before Disney sunk their talons in. Like yeah we got more shows and movies that expanded the universe but they also cut out decades of book contributions in their acquisition and that kinda sucked. But yeah, that Star Wars?"
"Nine movies," his tone is disbelieving, and now it's your turn for your eyebrows to raise, "can you name them?"
You nod, "well yeah. Do you want them in episode order or release?"
His brows furrow, "did they not release in order?"
"In a sense? Three trilogies, 4-5-6 back in the late 70s early 80s, then 1-2-3 in the late 90s early 00s, and 7-8-9 through the teens. So order, yes, just… not a cohesive one."
"Release, then," he leaned back and crossed his arms, a position you'd love to mimic if you weren't cuffed to the table for… an indeterminate period of time now, actually.
"A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi-"
"Woah now, empire? What's a jeddy?"
You give him a blank look, trying very hard to mask your disbelief as you look between him and the mirror behind him. You look at your reflection, take a deep breath, and- "sir would it be easier for you to maybe check the internet?"
He seemed to bristle, nose flaring and looking at you expectantly.
You just… kinda sat there. You tapped your fingers together on the desk and kept the eye contact he was intent on. It took a good minute and him getting progressively pissier before you simply ask, "would you like the other movies now?"
You didn't expect an explosion of movement from the man. He downright snarled and slammed his hands on the table as he burst to his feet, the sudden change sending his chair screeching back before falling with a clatter. You leaned as far back as your cuffed hands would allow, eyes wide and a panic rising.
Both of you turned to look at the door when it slammed open with a barked, "Williams!"
The man who opened it reared back a bit, "Christ, layin' it on a bit thick," he groused, his tone sounding more like someone chastising a teenager for using too much Axe body spray. He smoothed his posture back into something casual as he fanned the air dismissively with a hand, "cap wants you to take a walk."
Your interrogator- Williams, apparently- stares at the man in the door, the two locking eyes before the one in the door straightens from his purposely relaxed posture. You watch the both of them, noting the shoulders tensing as the two just. Staring at each other? Eventually the guy who'd been grilling you looked away and stormed out, the man in the doorway letting him slip out easily enough before turning a charming look back to you.
He took a minute to fan the door a few times to get newer, blissfully cool air in before he entered the room, "sorry 'bout him. He really did a number in here," the new guy tsked before closing the door quietly behind himself.
Your brow furrowed even as you slowly relaxed a bit, had this Williams guy like… farted or something? A nice quirk of ventilation keeping you from smelling something abhorrent? Either way you simply shrug as he walks in and tips the chair back up, sitting and giving another reassuring smile, "how you doing, love?"
You opened and closed your mouth a few times before simply settling on, "I'm a bit… whelmed? This has been," you give as vague a rolling gesture as you can without your cuffs rattling too badly, "a lot? And I have no idea what just set him off either?"
It's the man before you's turn to quirk a brow, "no idea?"
"If I knew the answers to his questions I'd've given 'em by now. I don't, though, and then he just started staring? And hell I just thought it was some kinda macho 'I can stare the truth out of you,'" you pitched your voice lower and pushed your shoulders out for a second to mimic the douchebag behavior before settling, "so I kept eye contact because I'm so out of my depth I have no reason to lie at all and now…" you trail off, gesturing around the room, "all that."
The man nods slowly, "alright love, could you tell me about the last five years?"
Your brows furrow, "oh fuck, 2019 was five years ago wasn't it. God, time is an illusion. Anyway, you want what I was doing leading up to and through the pandemic?"
You think he might've startled for a second but he simply moved to scratch his chin, "mhmm. Just your thoughts on the last five years is all."
So… you ramble. Because he was nice and not prodding or asking weird questions. You talk to him about your job before the pandemic, how people thought covid was just a flu until the death tolls kept climbing, how tons of governments dropped the ball on a local or country-wide level and how that kicked back onto your life, and then the absolute crapshoot of the last election cycle, the shitty 'oh no this is the new normal everything is fine' behavior that has lead to surges and cycles of a fucking plague and so on. He simply nodded, gave some sympathetic hums and winces appropriately at your experiences.
"And did you go back and watch Star Wars through that? Or other things Disney owned?"
And, well, that was a weird way to phrase it but you shrugged, "the mouse is just shy of a monopoly and not one that anybody can take that down so… yeah, I guess? They kept putting shows out and expanding their Star Wars universe so that's been kinda neat to watch but not just them, no. Couple other games and stuff like that to keep me busy, too," you kinda handwave and shut up because panic rambling to MILITARY PERSONNEL is probably not your smartest move in hindsight. Especially when you don't know his name. A+, self.
You tap your fingers against the metal table as he looks at you, "and you said covid has a long term effect of ruining people's senses of smell and taste?"
You nod slowly, "yeah, dude? It's one of the biggest warning signs for most people? Like if everything starts tasting like it was made by a middle class white mom who keeps shoving random letters in her kids names you should swab? That kinda shit?"
What rock has this guy been living under? You were pretty sure the military were supposed to be way more familiar with this shit all things considered, but you've been wrong before.
It was his turn to give you a bit of a wide eyed look before he poorly covers a laugh, "alright, that's fair. I need to go talk with my captain," he hooks a thumb over his shoulder to the window, which didn't surprise you that there had been people back there. He offers a reassuring smile as he stands, humming idly as he pushes the chair back in. He pauses mid-step, "you mentioned that there were cards…?"
You find yourself nodding slowly, "yeah it was important and you couldn't fly or go to certain places if you didn't have one for a while. Should still have a picture of mine buried on my phone," you really didn't wanna get another first-round of covid shots, you REALLY didn't wanna repeat the 24 hours of suck for no reason.
"Cool, thanks," he flashes another charming grin before he slides out of the room.
You lean back in your chair, what an odd guy. Nice though.

"Right," Gaz says as he opens the door to Price and Ghost, "either our mystery guest is off her nut or she's legitimately from somewhere and somewhen else."
Ghost and Price look at each other before turning back to Gaz, this… complicated matters.
Well, it's not like you hadn't given them information to identify yourself. They'd dig up who you were one way or another.

You stare blankly as the nice man from before gives you a sympathetic look, "what do you mean I'm dead?"
Behind him is a guy you're not sure if he's just fuckoff huge or if he's just moderately huge and it's forced perspective.
You don't think it's forced perspective.
You are absolutely trying not to panic spiral.
You are absolutely doing a horrible job at that.
"Well," he opens the file before him and there's a news article, proudly proclaiming "Locals Die in Horrible Freak Accident" like that's not some form of you that was looking like some smear on the pavement, "there's this. Fingerprints match up. Can check for dental if you're really curious."
"Were there even any teeth left after that," you mumble as you take and read the offered article. Seven people were involved, the pictures used are mostly flattering. Hell, you almost don't mind what pic they used for an alternate you but… "that's certainly not the pic I would've wanted. Maybe this me had different tastes?"
You take the time to actually read through the article. It's not helping because for as much as you stare at the page you're not absorbing any information. Some form of detachment, if this was really you? You'd died. A different you but a you nonetheless. You died and you're reading how it happened. There was a lot to unpack in all this and you just needed to put the suitcase away for now. You'd much rather throw it away at this rate.
You were rapidly coming to the understanding that you and Toto were not in Kansas anymore, and there wasn't a convenient yellow brick road to get yourself back home. No easy way to get the hell out of Dodge either. Was it Dodge or the O.K. Corral that was in Kansas? No the O.K. Corral wasn't in Kansas- Dodge was though, that's right.
This analogy was getting away from you and some part of you figured this was just your brain trying to protect yourself but… wait, wasn't this a metaphor? There wasn't 'like' or 'as' or goddammit not again.
You recognize some names here and there but largely everyone involved were perfect strangers. The article doesn't cover if it would've been slow or quick. You hope for the smear that it was quick. Smears like that don't happen slowly, right? Well, not unless it's like a dramatic slide down a window, but not usually across pavement like that.
Still not sure how you feel about all of it. Bit morbid being confronted with your mortality like that.
Certainly answered a lot of questions about your theoretical passing you never thought about. Like if the obituary for you in what you know to be your own home and world is just as… really kinda just mediocre as this. Have you really done nothing of note for an obituary? Damn.
You kept pouring over the article, each pass bringing new words into focus that help connect the picture a little bit, but… Something repeated in the article made you pause, "two alphas, four betas, and an omega?"
There was no decent way to ask about that. Any questions invoked from here would border into dangerous territory better kept between yourself and a private browser history. You knew what you were about but there was no fucking way.
"Their designations," the nice man whose name you still hadn't caught explains, "mostly explaining their secondary gender."
You look at him owlishly. You pray to whatever God might be listening that you wake up shortly. Or that the earth below your feet opens up and swallows you. Whichever comes first, the mortification will snipe you otherwise.
"Please tell me this is an elaborate joke at my expense," you are very quiet as you are trying to get really cool with a lot of things really quickly.
"Negative," the big fucker in the back practically growled and you knew that voice would do things to you if you weren't half stepped out of your own body.
You missed whatever his followup was but your brow furrowed when you checked the date on the article, "I've been dead for months? That…" you let the paper fall from your hands. Everything about this is wild at best and very overwhelming at worst.
A lot of this qualified as worst.
You look up at the two, missing the odd look they shot at each other as you try to pull yourself back together, "so now what? You've got a not-a-smear of me that fell from the sky onto a secure military base, and where I'm from we didn't have," you paused to gesture between the paper and the two soldiers, "dynamics was it? That was just a fanfiction special."
"Fanfiction."
The way he said it was so carefully neutral you paused, "oh my god without Star Trek to popularize fanfiction and the fan community, how has fandom evolved? Is fanfiction a thing- well, yes, it does fanfics have been a thing since Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy and even before- well, the question is more if it's still popularized? Are there still the wattpad fics of- I am getting so off track. What exactly is the next step?"
You look from the nice man to the big fucker and back, neither saying anything but looking at you with careful blankness.
You felt like you were being weighed and measured in their eyes.
You hoped to anyone listening that you weren't found wanting at least. Not when you're in the shit situation it looks like you ever so increasingly fell into.
"Considering I'm. Not smear. And very much not from here? Are blanks a thing? Or is that what a beta is I'm," you trail off, brow furrowing, "fuzzy. On the whole thing. The flavor of understanding, dynamics, and population skew tended to be dependant on the author's level of horny."
The did get a bit of a snort from the pretty one before you, the one in the back tilting his head just so as the pretty one spurred you on, "okay please don't take this the wrong way, you have given me nothing to go on but A/B/O and-" a finger was raised in question to that, you quickly explaining, "the fanfic shorthand for the universe without being a mouthful. Anyway- I've seen population numbers being roughly the same across the board, I've seen alphas and omegas at roughly 1% of the population of society on either end, I've seen alphas at about 5% and omegas at 1%- those ones are usually the most horny I swear.
"And it's all over the board, no consistency- sometimes it's betas are infertile, sometimes they're the straightman to the comedy that's an alpha and omega trying to woo each other without being too horny to function. Sometimes it's a sliding scale where being beta just means you're more the more middle-ground regulated hormonally with alphas and omegas being the opposing ends of a spectrum. Can you please say something and give me a fucking break because my panic rambles are probably like. Some kinda prejudiced. I'm still not over the 'I'm supposed to be a smear on the ground we don't even have dental images of to confirm who it is anymore' nugget you dropped on me. I think I'm doing well for this"
You would rather not tell them that as soon as you're out of this box of a room you were gonna be curled up in a ball and unabashedly weeping. That was none of their business.
The pretty one gave you what you're sure was supposed to be a reassuring smile but the quiet stretched just a bit too long. You looked from one to the other before leaning forward, "is this supposed to be soothing in some way? Because it's just a bit of an extended awkward silence and that's uh-"
It was the big one in the back's turn to give an amused snort, the pretty one looking bashful, "right, sorry, we uh-"
You jerk a bit, "wait, was that supposed to be some scent thing," you really didn't wanna say pheromones and potentially dig yourself into a deeper, more awkward hole based on Horny Pseudoscience.
Pretty rubbed the back of his neck, "something like that. You really couldn't smell anything?"
You know the exact Face you're making. It's very much your 'I have told you this and I'm getting tired of having to repeat it' face. You can tell he clocks it but for the record, because to your mortification this has to be recorded, you simply give a succinct, "no, I haven't smelled anything. Not from you, not from him," you jerk your head towards the big fucker, "and not from douchebag from be- Williams! His name was Williams. Nothing. Really had no clue why you were fanning the door when you came in."
You sigh, rubbing the heels of your palms into your eyes, "okay. Assuming I'm not about to be put into past tense a second time. Do we have any idea what popped me out here?"
The sentences are stilted, you know you're getting more rattled the longer you're here but sue you alright it's been the worst six hours of your life here.
They just continue to look at you, pretty keeping a polite almost customer service look as big one just stares unceasingly.
"Right. Okay. Am I going to be reintegrated to society or is this," you gesture around the little room as much as you can, "looking like my home for the foreseeable future."
No change in what you can see of either's expression, and you just sag. Deep breath in, deep breath out, "cool. Alright. Well. I know nothing of how biology is altered here, I'm not sure how that has impacted changes throughout history, and frankly I don't know what your pop culture has done. I'm assuming math and written languages are largely the same but in all fairness I don't know what I don't know."
You just stare quietly at the table for a bit longer before looking back at the two of them, "is there anything else you need because I can feel the freakout creeping up and while I know there's no real privacy, uh…"
The pretty one looked back to the big one, at some point you're sure you'll get some sort of names but for now? Now you watch the big one nod, the pretty one give you a polite smile and some vaguely polite bullshit your brain is swiftly going too far out to hear.
You only hope that whoever is behind the mirror is polite enough to look away as you put your head down on the table and give yourself the opportunity to, just this once, cry. As a treat.

This is a pro Tamlin, anti Rhysand self insert revenge fic. All characters belong to SJM, but she wasn't treating them right. Tam x reader, Tam x Rhysands Sister (OC), First person narrative. This will also reference Elucien and Neris in the future but we aren't there yet.
We are headed to the House of Wind to confront RhySAnd and we see more of Sky's past as she taunts RhySAnd with it.

Ch 6 >> Ch 8
Chapter 7:
Today is the day we were heading to the House of Wind. I had sent a letter to Rhysand offering to meet him, that Tamlin will join me, it took him a few days to respond. Lucien was back on his feet feeling good as new.
After putting on one of my dresses, I sat at the vanity as Tamlin braided my hair, he was getting better at it. This has become almost a morning ritual for us. Brushing and braiding each other's hair as we discuss what's on our mind. Today we were both silent, we didn't want to do this, but at least we will be together.
When we were both ready we joined Lucien in the dining hall for breakfast.
“I almost want to go with you, just to see the look on Rhysands face as I walk in there unscathed.” Lucien admitted.
“I'd rather see the hate in Feyres eyes when I tell her you're dead by Rhysands hand,” I teased.
Lucien chuckled, Tamlin wasn't amused.
“You could go in disguise.” I joked, “have Tamlin turn you into a Raven and perch on my shoulder if you're so nosey.”
“Don't tempt me with a good time.” Lucien was going with it.
“No,” Tamlin huffed.
“Please, imagine how badass I would look walking in with a raven on my shoulder.” I whined. Still teasing, trying to lighten my nerves.
“I'm okay with that.” Lucien shrugged. Tamlin just groaned.

“No, not a red raven, they're gonna recognize him. A normal raven.” I ordered.
“I can't believe we are actually doing this.” Tamlin sighed.

I portaled us to the door of the House of Wind, held Tamlins hand, and knocked. He was nervous, he had never been to Velaris before, but, thanks to my brother, the secrecy of this city has faltered.
“There's my baby sister! Can I finally get that hug?” Rhysand tried to embrace me and I put my hand on his chest pushing him back.
“I don't like to be touched.” I said dryly. “See how easy it was for me to show up on the OUTSIDE of your house and KNOCK?” I judged. “Show us to where we are having this meeting.”
“So bossy,” Rhysand teased, “you're not even the slightest bit happy to see me?”
He led us to a large sitting room, Tamlin and I sat on one couch, well, I perched on the edge, (how do the other illyrians sit here comfortably?) Rhysand and Feyre on the other, with who I assume to be, Feyre's sister and either Cassian or Azriel, I couldn't remember, the one with long hair, sitting in the corner, obviously eavesdropping. “Why would I be happy to see you? The last time you threw Lucien's dead body at me.”
Rhysands face dropped, he expected me to be more subtle. Feyre's face lined with shock as tears welled up in her eyes. “What? What is she talking about, Rhysand? You told me he left to stay at the Spring court.”
“Well? It was obviously a cry for attention, now you have it. What do you want from me?” I said coldly, cutting her off.
“I just want you home, where you belong.” Rhysand said, annoyed that he will surely have to weave another lie to Feyre later.
“I am where I belong. Is that all? You just want another prisoner to add to your collection?” I noticed Feyres sisters' ears perk up. She had no walls built up to protect her mind, odd for someone living in a house with daemati.
“You wouldn't be a prisoner.” Rhysand snapped.
I laughed, “no one generally chooses to stay in your company, brother.” Feyre still had pain on her face, lost in thought and trying to hold it together just long enough to finish the meeting. Hmm, it seems she might still have a heart after all.
“I would just like to show you around Velaris, catch up and show you what I've accomplished in the past years.” Rhysand admitted, trying, and failing, to stay collected.
“Velaris has always been perfect and protected, as done by our grandfather. If you want to impress me, show me how you have improved the lives of the people in the Hewn city and illyria.” Velaris citizens were safe, well cared for and ruled justly. Illyria has been used as my family's own personal warrior farm, and the Hewn City citizens trapped since long before I was born. “Tell me, do the majority of Illyrian citizens still live in tents?”
“We are doing our best in illyria. It's not as easy as you think.” Rhysand replied with a slight hint of attitude. He wasn't used to someone calling him out on his fallacies.
“Huh, I would believe that 500 years is plenty of time for the most powerful high lord.” I said mockingly. He loved to spit that phrase unto himself, a gross display of arrogance was all it ever was. “Tell me, how many mansions do you have now?”
“Six,” Feyre whispered, deep in thought, she seemed like she also had not heard anyone question him.
“Gross.” I replied bluntly. “Mother isn't going to be happy to hear about this.”
“Mom is alive?” Rhysand gasped, a light flickered in his eyes, Feyres jaw dropped slightly, the other Illyrian stared at me. “Where is she?”
“She lives amongst the warrior women of Brokilon, a forest warded well against anyone who wishes it or its inhabitants harm. I don't mind telling you this because there is absolutely no way for you to get there without my help. It's located in an entirely different realm. I needed divine intervention to return, something you would never be able to hack.” Every eye was on me, as they tried to make sense of it. “Our sister and I visit her regularly, she doesn't ask about you much.”
“Sister?” Rhysand seemed to finally be speechless. That last line stung.
“Yes, Yennefer. Half human, half Illyrian. She is an insanely powerful mage. She looks like us, violet eyes, black hair, but no wings. She had a slightly easier time in that realm considering they kill ‘Pointy ears’ on sight there. Think of what I would look like masquerading as a human, and that's her.”
“A mage?” Feyre questioned.
“Yes, in that realm magic is pulled from many sources, not just the earth, and they use that magic to.. mutate(?) humans into immortals. Thats where I learned the portals.”
“How did you and mother get there? How did you survive?” Rhysand pressed. I am not going to lie, I am enjoying the attention.
“When Tamlins father raised his blade to strike me,” I gripped Tamlins hand, I didn't blame him for breaking when the information of my location was tortured out of him. “I panicked. I held mother tight and reached out for any escape, and when I opened my eyes, we were in a forest I had never seen before. An Ash forest. I learned later that the power I grasped was chaos, not the power of the land.”
“Don't forget it was Tamlin who had you killed. He locked Feyre up and he hurt her.” Rhysand spit.
“He didn't ‘have me killed’ if I am currently sitting here, Rhysand. Mother and I are both alive, that is more than I can say for my predecessor, the last Lady of Spring” I retorted with a too sweet smile. While we hadn't exactly made it official, how could we with an empty court, this is the first time I have claimed that title. I wanted to turn to see Tamlins reaction, but I didn't want to lead on how significant this was to the others in the room. Tamlin showed his approval by softly moving his thumb over the back of my hand.
“And fair, yes, both Tamlin and Feyre made mistakes, that is not my place to comment on. Keep in mind, though, WE are the ones that wanted to stay away. You drug us here. Tamlin apologized, she didn't accept, and since then he has mostly kept to his own court. You and your brutes are the ones that keep going to him. Tell me, did you ever apologize to Feyre for what you did to her under the mountain?” I could see out of the corner of my eye, Feyres sister was shocked. She obviously didn't know what all the other High lords and courts witnessed. Rhysand and Feyres eyes both narrowed at me.
“If there is anything that is not your place to bring up-” Rhysand started.
“You did it so publicly,” I cut him off, “all the other High lords in Prythia became unwilling participants to your weird exhibitionst kink. You even admitted you did it to hurt Tamlin.”
“What did he do?” Feyres sister demanded through clenched teeth.
“Nothing Nesta. Mind your business.” Feyre snapped.
“He drugged her, and made her the nightly entertainment for all the courts under the mountain as she was stripped naked and forced to dance for him. If you knew she was your mate, why would you treat her that way?” Directed to Rhysand, then back to Feyre, “why cant your older sister know? Everyone else in Prythia does.”
“He did it to protect me.”
“Is that what he told you? You deserve better, babygirl.”
Rhysand was losing control. Both Lucien and Tamlin had the metal shields up that protected them from Rhysands daemati powers. So what does any self centered brat do when they are losing control? They change the subject, hoping to garner favor.
“I still remember you, bowed down kissing my boot and begging,” Rhysand taunted Tamlin.
I heard him take a deep breath, Lucien's talons gripped into my shoulder and I tried not to flinch at the pain. I retorted quickly, “what for? Oh that's right, it was to convince you to not sell Feyre out to Amarantha. Or should I say ‘Claire.’ Right? I wonder if your love for your mate is strong enough to entice you to do the same, dear brother.” Feyre began to choke.
Nesta was angry, confused, trying to process everything she just heard. Shock lined the Illyrian males face too, he hadn't heard either.
“Let her go.” Rhysand snarled at me, unmoving. His eyes void of any emotion.
“Ah, ah,” I sang, pointing a finger down to my boot. “You know what I want.”
“I will never bow to you,”
“Quickly, she's fading fast.”
Nesta cried out and bowed herself. The illyrian brute holding her back, Rhysand remained still, not breaking eye contact. I sent a message to her mind, Feyre will not die, I promise.
“Enough, Sky.” Tamlin growled at me.
I released my grip on her lungs and she took a heavy breath, fear, anger and confusion in her eyes.
“Let it be known, Feyre, that your ‘mate’ wouldn't even move a muscle to save you, but Tamlin questioned even me.” I said to her softly. “It seems you have a lot to think about.”
“Let's go,” Tamlin hissed at me. Uh oh, I am in trouble. I opened a portal home and we left.

“We don't hurt people, Sky, that's not who we are.” Tamlin was angry. He shifted Lucien back to normal.
“I was in full control the entire time, I was not going to let her die,” my response was cold.
“I thought it was great,” Lucien muttered, eyes wide, but not meeting ours.
“If you are jealous of her–” Tamlin accused.
“JEALOUS? of her?” I cut him off and raised my voice, “I am angry with her. I do not give half a fuck who you had in your bed while I was gone, Tamlin, what I do care about is her destruction of my court. You, and her, were so incredibly toxic together it ended with entire cities burnt to ash, my people lost their homes because you two couldn't talk to each other. That is where my frustration starts and ends. My people, families, children, entire lives uprooted and destroyed. People shouldn't have to suffer because their leader is going through a break up. Childish nonsense caused me to return home to an abandoned court..” my voice softened, ever so slightly, “you are doing the work to rebuild and correct your mistakes while she is gallivanting around the night court like the sun shines out of her ass. She shows no remorse, no empathy for the people she destroyed. I cannot express how little I care that you enjoyed the taste of her.”
His stance softened and he whispered “I'm sorry, Sky.”
“Don't ever question where my loyalties lie, again.” I spit. Lucien reached a hand out to me, and I turned and stormed off to compose myself.

I found myself outside my old gallery, a room I have dreamed of returning to for 300 years, I opened the door and creeped in.
It was obvious that others have used this, Tamlin admitted as much, admitted that Feyre would paint in here. I carefully studied the art laid out around the room, the paints and brushes strung out and left to dry. I felt a twinge in my chest, was it jealousy? No, I didn't seriously expect an entire room left empty for so long, did I?
And then I found hers. Much simpler art than the realism I painted in, lots of abstract splotches and lines, and crudely drawn pictures. It was beautiful in its own right, obviously done while she was a human. A human. Turned Fae, after the atrocities of Amarantha. Still a child by Fae years, forced into Prythia, forced into marriage after marriage. I know as well as anyone what a prison a crown truly is, her youth, her freedom, stolen from her by tradition, power, and lust. I had been treating her as the High Lady she chose to be, I wonder if that decision was made with her properly informed consent, or just pushed on her by my brother.

An hour or so later, I headed out to find Tamlin. My head was clear now and we needed to talk.
He was in his study, hunched over his desk, head in his hands. It was dark now, the moonlight was the only thing illuminating the room. “Tam?” I creaked the door open and entered slowly. He didn't respond.
I walked over to him and laid a gentle hand on his back. “My love,” I whispered, “can we talk? I'm sorry I blew up today.” He slid his chair out and pulled me onto his lap, holding me in his arms as I nestled my head in his neck.
“I love you, I am sorry I upset you.” Tamlin whispered. “I just didn't expect that today. I shouldn't have accused you. I don't, honestly, think that low of you, I was just angry.”
“I shouldn't have hurt her like that. I used her to shut my brother up the same way he used Lucien. Tensions were high today. I wanted to just stay away but my brother is so spoiled he can't take no for an answer. I'm sorry, I understand that seeing her in pain is not easy for you.” He just held me tighter, and I kissed his neck.
“I don't like leaving Spring.” Tamlin admitted quietly, “It just makes me feel sick every second I am outside my borders.”
“You're gonna have to pick one,” my voice soft and sweet, “either you swallow your worry, or your unease. I need to be able to leave if we are going to rebuild.” I lifted my hand to caress his cheek, slowly brushing his golden hair behind his ear. He laid a gentle kiss on my forehead.
“So, Lady of Spring, huh?” He smiled sweetly down at me, I sat up and turned slightly to look him in the face. “Are you sure?”
“Of course,” I breathed leaning in closer, our lips almost touching, “unless you object?”
He pulled me in closer and kissed me deeply, “I would never object to that.”

“I don’t wanna be a mood ring!” he buried his face in his hands.
There was no way he wanted anyone else to know about this.
He had to keep it a secret.
“Please help me figure out how to make sure no one else can figure this out.”
“I’m not sure I know a good way to do that.”
“But you’re super smart! I’m sure you can think of something!”
“Thank you for the compliment, Phantom, but I think you’ll be fine.”
“How am I going to be fine? Everyone is going to know exactly what I’m thinking all the time!”
“They won’t know what you are thinking unless you tell them. They just might be able to figure out how you feel about things.”
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
“No.”
Danny flopped sideways, “This sucks. I’m never gonna be able to do anything ever.”
“I don’t think this is as bad as you think it is.”
“Easy for you to say.”
Pandora patted his shoulder, “Perhaps no one will notice.”
Danny just turned to look at her.
He highly doubted this was going to stay a secret for long. “I still don’t even get why this is happening.”
“What do you mean?”
Danny sat back up and looked at his hands, “Clockwork said each change was for a reason. He explained some of it and said you knew about my arms, but why would having everyone know my mood be a useful king thing? This feels so random unless I’m missing something still.”
“I might have an idea. More of a theory, but I think explaining what you came here for would help.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.”
Pandora smiled, “Excellent. Now I suppose I should see how much you know.”
Danny nodded and waited for her to begin.
“Do you know why I have four arms?” she asked.
Danny shook his head. He honestly hadn’t really thought about it before.
Was he supposed to know? Should he have been more curious about that?
“It’s alright, I was just checking. It has to do with where I’m from.”
“Where you’re from?”
“There is a story, you would call it a myth, that the first humans were all created with four arms, four legs, and two faces. The gods decided that they were too powerful and split them in two.”
“So you have four arms because you’re powerful?” Danny guessed.
“In a sense, yes. It also helps me with my task of guarding the box.”
“So I have more arms for, um, protecting the ghost zone?” That didn’t sound like the right answer, even as he said it.
“Not quite, but I’m sure it will help.”
Even without his skin turning green, Danny was sure he looked very confused.
“For you, the arms mean something different. They represent an aspect of how you view a ruler.”
“I gave me four arms?”
“Technically.”
“Why? How?”
“By being American.”
“What?!”
Pandora laughed, “Sorry, I had to.”
“Come on! Don’t tease me. Not now. You promised no more being vague.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry.” She took a second to compose herself and continued. “What I mean is that your idea of a ruler isn’t a King or a Queen. You have democracy. Which stems back to the Greeks.”
She took his lower hands in her own lower hands, “This is you reaching back in time to show you want things to be more fair and just, in the present and the future.”
“Is every ghost king such a mess of things?”
“Did you not see the last one? He had European plate armor, aspects of Norse mythology, and also a pharaoh’s beard. There’s a reason we had to use a sarcophagus. Not a coffin, not a mausoleum, no, a stupid sarcophagus.” The ends of Pandora’s firey hair flared with her outburst.
“Not a fan of his then?”
“No,” she said firmly but then relaxed. “Okay, he wasn’t always the worst. I had actually rooted for him at first.”
“What happened?”
“Honestly, I’m not sure. I had always assumed that he just went mad with power. That he had been an outsider for so long and decided to take revenge. But maybe it wasn’t that simple.”
“He was an outsider?”
“His name was Pariah for a reason, dear.”
Danny was quiet for a while as he thought. He knew what it was like to be an outcast. That was every day at school. That was the start of his ghostly life too.
And now he was king, or going to be anyway.
“What if being King makes me go bad?”
“Why would you go bad? You’ve been nothing but helpful. I don’t think you have a bad bone in your body.”
“That’s not true.” Danny wasn’t sure why he was saying this to her but he didn’t stop. “I can be bad. I try to be good and help whenever I can, but I know I can be bad. I’ve seen it.”
“What do you mean you’ve seen it?”
“I saw the future once. I lost everyone important to me and then I destroyed everything else. No one was safe. I was a monster.”
Pandora placed a hand on his shoulder, “I’m sorry you had to see that.”
“It’s okay.”
“Phantom,” Pandora said softly as she gently placed a finger under his chin so she could make him look at her. “It doesn't have to be.”
Oh, why did she have to say that?
His eyes watered before he could even fully process what she said.
He wasn’t sure who hugged who first but wasn’t sure it really mattered.
Despite both of them having two extra sets of arms the hug was as natural as any other he’d ever had before. They fit together like two funky little puzzle pieces.
Once he was calm again he was able to explain more about the future that never happened. The paradox he created and had to fight his way through.
How, after that, time travel wasn’t too bad.
“I’m not sure I like how comfortable you are with messing with the time stream.”
“I’m not messing with things.”
“You just said you went back in time to prevent your nemesis from getting power, and that resulted in you never being born.”
“Okay, but I did fix that.”
“This sure is going to be an interesting era.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No,” she admitted hesitantly
“Doesn’t sound like a good thing,” Danny pressed.
“It's just interesting. Very interesting things ahead.”
“Well, I guess it’s good to know you aren’t completely horrified by me being in charge.”
Then it dawned on him that he was going to be in charge.
Of everything.
“Oh no, I’m going to be in charge.”
“See that’s why I’m not worried.”
Danny looked up at her in stressed confusion.
“If you weren’t also worried and stressed about this, it would be a bad sign. Can’t have another cocky arrogant ruler.”
“Happy to help,” Danny said as he slumped back onto the couch.
Pandora patted him on the head. “You’ll be fine.”
“Sure hope you’re right.”
“Just remember those close to you are in your corner. You have allies and friends. You aren’t doing this alone.”
Danny sat up and really thought about her words.
He wasn’t alone.
He had friends.
They would be there for him.
They could help.
He wasn’t alone.
Danny groaned in annoyance as a thought he couldn’t ignore popped into his head, “Man, I am really going to have to do well on my government final, aren’t I?”
“That sounds like a good idea.”
Danny sighed and decided maybe he should head back home now. He had a lot to tell his friends.
Ah geez, he also had a really big apology to give them too.
Maybe he could stay a few more minutes.
“Phantom, what are you thinking about?”
“Nothing.” Danny lied.
Pandora just raised an eyebrow at him.
Then he remembered.
“Stupid mood-changing skin.”
“Alright, out with it.”
“I don’t want to go back home just yet.”
“Why?”
“Uh, emotional outburst?”
“You can’t avoid them forever.”
“I know,” Danny whined, “but what about five more minutes?”
“Go home Phantom.”
“But,” Danny hesitated but then actually thought of a reason to stay, “You never said why the color changes were a good thing or whatever.”
“Phantom, we can talk later.”
“But if you don’t answer this it’s gonna bug me.”
“Fine.”
Danny happily sat on the couch and waited for the explanation. One that was hopefully long and needed many questions to be asked to fully understand it.
“Checks and balances.”
“What?”
“Now go home.”
“No! You can’t just say something vague and then not explain it!”
“Democracy needs checks and balances. Your mood being visible will help keep you in check.”
“But I keep doing things too fast for anyone to stop me. How is that helpful.”
“We’ll know there is a reason for your behavior. We might be able to help calm you before you get to a point where you react in a way you don’t want to. We can help explain to others that you may need space before you get completely overwhelmed.”
Danny couldn’t really argue with that.
It would be nice to have a buffer.
It was like when his friends were able to cover for him when he had to go deal with ghosts during school.
“Satisfied?” Pandora asked knowingly.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m going home now.”
“Good. Feel free to come back anytime.”
He waved goodbye as he started to float away but zipped back for another quick hug. “Thanks for explaining everything.”
Danny left Pandora and headed home, finally feeling that weight of uncertainty lift off of his shoulders.
Sure he still had to explain everything to his friends, but it wasn’t so scary now.
There were still a lot of things he didn’t know, but he knew he wasn’t alone. They would figure it out together.

Chapter 17: i sit there silently

“I hear you have assignments for me?” Steve’s leaning against the Byers’ porch railing. He’s trying to look smooth, but he’s pretty sure it’s not working. Not when Jonathan knows he’s leaning because he’s not supposed to put all of his weight on his ankles too often yet.
At least he’s got good crutches that don’t cause chafing, and Will’s even offered to decorate them when he gets a chance.
Luckily for him, that doesn’t seem to stop Jonathan from kissing him once the door is shut behind them.
“Yeah, they’re in a folder in my room.”
“Really? You’ve just been keeping them here the whole time?”
“Yeah. There are a lot, man. You don’t have to go back, you could just graduate with us instead.” It’s nice that Jonathan thinks he could graduate this year if he went back. He doesn’t even think he could graduate this year.
Jonathan’s probably only saying it to soften the blow a little.
“I think I need something that’s at least a little normal, right now.” That’s what he’s been telling everyone, and for the most part they’re accepting it as an answer.
El always looks suspicious when he says it, but that might be because she doesn’t want him to move out of the cabin.
He’s currently choosing to believe that she can’t actually read his mind, despite some of the things she says and does that make it seem like she can.
“Well, I’ve got homework tonight, we could work on it together.” Jonathan gets the folder—it must have been hidden, because Steve hasn’t seen it before—and then gets himself set up.
Steve stares at the first page; it’s an English assignment from early December, copied down in Nancy’s handwriting.
“Okay, so an essay.” He puts that aside for now. If it’s a book report, he can’t do it right now anyway. He doesn’t have the book with him.
The next one is a math assignment, which he can do—at least some of it. He starts on the standalone questions, not bothering to look at the word problems. He always struggles the most with word problems. They suck, and he kind of wants to rip them off the page and burn them..
By the time Will and Joyce get home, he’s gotten through three assignments total, two for math and one for his ‘arts’ class—since he can’t take gym, he’ll need another class to make up for it. So they’ve just given him a bunch of random art assignments, apparently.
He wonders if there are written assignments for the drama classes. Probably not. And if they were, they’d be about those hard-to-read plays, so he wouldn’t be able to do them anyway.
“Are you at a good break point?” Joyce puts a hand on his shoulder, and he jumps a little. “Looks like you’ve gotten a lot done, after being out of school for so long.”
“Some of the math is pretty easy.” He shrugs. “English, history, and science are gonna be harder.” He likes history, though. It’s just so hard to read the tiny print in the textbook. He did a lot better last year, when his teacher acted out some things and read others to them dramatically. His notes hadn’t been the neatest, but he’d gotten his first A- in a class since middle school.
He’d been so excited when he’d seen that on his report card. Of course, that one A- hadn’t been enough to get him out of trouble.
His teacher this year—Mrs. Click—doesn’t do that; she mostly just assigns reading and then has a quiz on it.
He’s not doing great.
“So you’ve decided to go back, then?”
“Yeah, I think so. I want something a little normal, you know? And maybe people will stop trying to spy on us and stuff.”
He knows that Nancy and Jonathan have tried to hide it from him, but there are people watching them. They’re curious, and he knows it’s only a matter of time before someone says something to them directly—or worse, goes to Will or Mike, or any of the other kids. They might ask Joyce, too, but he doesn’t think anyone wants to try asking Hopper.
“Well, you know you’re welcome to study here anytime. Do you know what you have to get done before you go back?”
He looks over at Jonathan. He hadn’t thought about that.
“Most of it.” He says, apologetically. “Nance and I will help, don’t worry.”
“I can help too!” Will takes the seat next to him, looking way too excited about homework. “I can read stuff to you if you need it.”
How had he known?
“That will help, Will, thanks. But you’ve got your own stuff to do.”
“Will, what do you mean?” Joyce asks.
“He did all the math problems but the word ones.” Will shrugs. “So he can do the math, but maybe the word problems are hard to read or something. And he likes it when El reads to him.”
“El’s a good reader.” It’s a weak defense, and he knows it. He probably should have at least offered to read to her.
“We can talk about that more later. What do you guys want for dinner? Steve, I’ll call Jim and let him know you’re staying the night.”
He wants to ask why, but the last time he did that, Will gave him a weird look, and Joyce just looked sad.
“Can we have pizza? Since Steve’s here?” Will bounces, and Steve grins at him. He kind of wants to bounce, too, but he’s too old for that.
“Don’t expect that to work for long,” Joyce warns. “Steve’s Jonathan’s boyfriend, I think he’s going to be over a lot.”
“But it works for now, and that’s what matters.”
“Oh, so you’re just using me to get pizza? Wow, little Byers, I expected better of you.”
“That’s not what I’m doing!”
“Seems like it is, Will.” Jonathan adds. “Maybe Steve and I should stay in my room, if you’re just going to try and use him like this.”
“Or maybe you just want to make out with him.”
“That’s a benefit, yeah.” Jonathan admits, kissing Steve with… a little flair than he normally would in front of the kids.
“Ew. Mom, tell them to stop making out in front of me!”
“Are there any clothes off?”
“No.”
“Then no, they’re fine.” Steve pulls away a little. He could really get used to this. He and Nancy could never make fun of Mike this way, her mom would have had a fit. But Joyce doesn’t care, and Will doesn’t mean it in the same way Mike had. He’s not rude or mean, he’s only teasing them. Sure, he’s probably a little grossed out, but only because Jonathan’s his big brother. Not because he hates Steve.
“Should we go to my room until the pizza gets here?” Jonathan murmurs. “I’m sure Mom wouldn’t mind.”
“No, stay out here, it’ll be ten minutes.” Joyce knows everything. “Will, grab the paper plates, will you? Jonathan, Steve, clear the table. If you put things back in Jonathan’s room, the door stays open.”
“How much did you get done?”
“Most of two math assignments, and one of the random arts ones.” He’s still got months’ worth of work to make up. He’s starting to see what Hopper went when he said he might want to wait.
It would give him more time to catch up, not that it would matter when he’d just be starting the year over.
“Want me to hand them in for you?”
“Not yet. I don’t think Hopper’s told them either way. Maybe when I look at some more of these, I’ll change my mind.” He won’t. He knows he won’t. He probably should, since even with Nancy and Jonathan’s help he’s not going to make it through even half of this work, but he won’t.
He’s too scared of what will happen if he doesn’t even try.

The three of them fall into an easy routine, over the next few weeks. Nancy would like to call it a nice routine, but the arguments with her mother that have become part of the routine is not at all nice.
It’s after one of these fights that she’s meant to hang out with Jonathan and Steve at the Byers’. Maybe do homework, but she’s doubting they’ll actually get much done.
“Next weekend.” Steve’s gotten dangerous on his crutches, lately. He and Jonathan are on the porch steps, and she keeps thinking that he’s going to fall. “Next weekend, and I get to go back to my house.”
Nancy’s not so sure that’s a good thing; Steve’s happier than she’s ever known him to be now. But he wants to go back. None of them, not even El’s puppy dog eyes (which, of course, Steve had taught her to use) can sway him.
“What about school?” She’s not a part of getting Steve up to speed on schoolwork, mostly because her mother will try and lock her in her bedroom if she spends any more time with her boys, no matter who else is around.
“I’m going back on Monday, Jon’s been turning in some of my stuff for me as I get it done. I think it’s enough to get me through a couple of classes.”
Some of his work is good, she’s sure, but Nancy’s seen some of his essays. She’s worried about what will happen when he finds out that he can’t graduate this year.
She honestly doesn’t know if he expects to graduate this year. She hasn’t asked.
“Nance,” Steve leans towards her, so much that she’s worried he’s going to overbalance and fall, “How would you feel about spending the weekend with me and Jonathan?”
“We’re going to help him move back and get readjusted.” Jonathan corrects, smiling a little. “I’ve been promised movies and pizza.”
“And kissing.” Steve adds.
“Oh, yes, that’s the deciding factor.” Jonathan wraps an arm around Steve’s shoulders. “Your mom will have a field day with that, though, right?”
“Yeah, she’ll be pissed. She’s already mad at me.”
Nancy hasn’t told either of them what exactly her mom had said the first time she’d rebuked her for spending her time with Jonathan and Steve.
“Still?” Steve asks.
“You know, she’s never needed someone to babysit Holly so often until I started spending more time with you both. She doesn’t like that I’m alone with you, is what I think it is. She never seemed to mind before. At least not this much.”
Nancy can’t figure out what’s set her off this time. She hasn’t heard anything at school, and most of what goes through her mom’s church gets around the high schoolers just as quickly. So she doesn’t think it’s a rumor.
“Want to talk about it?” Steve finally lets Jonathan guide him to sit on the steps, but that’s probably just because he’s distracted with her. He’s got his little worried face on; it’s one he usually tries his best to hide.
“I… don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on.”
“Want to talk about how you feel about it?”
She’s still figuring that out, too. On one hand, it’s really annoying and overprotective of her mom to be acting like this. On the other hand, she doesn’t think she’s had so much of her mom’s undivided attention since before Holly was born.
“You don’t have to!” Steve starts to backtrack after she’s quiet for a minute. Jonathan’s gone inside, probably to grab drinks or something.
“No, I’m just… I don’t know, it’s one of those things where the attention is nice, it’s more undivided attention from her than I’ve had since she was pregnant with Holly,” That’s also around the time her dad checked out. She’s still not sure if it’s because he hadn’t wanted another kid, or if there’s something else at play. “But I don’t like how she’s giving me attention, if that makes sense. She’s being more overbearing and overprotective than anything, and I don’t know what to do about it.”
It feels strange, to admit that out loud. She’s so used to knowing what to do for everything, or at least being able to figure it out. She’s done that with monsters from alternate dimensions! Her mom should be easier to handle than those!
That’s not how things are shaping up, though, and Nancy doesn’t like the pit that forms in her stomach when she thinks about it.
“Yeah, she’s being weird about it.” Steve agrees. “It’s not like you weren’t spending time with me alone, or time with Jonathan alone, before. Why is this so different?”
“I don’t know. She won’t actually tell me, she just keeps saying that I’m in trouble.” Jonathan hands them both a water.
“You could just stay here.” He offers. “Mom won’t mind.”
“Yeah, and that’s going to go over so well.”
“You could tell her that you’re going to move in with Steve, and then pretend to compromise with moving in here.” Jonathan suggests, looking a little too amused by it.
“Oh, she’d hate that.”
Thankfully, Jonathan and Steve steer the conversation away from her mom after that.
She’d never actually move in with the Byers’, Joyce has enough on her plate already without having to worry about her, too. But it’s nice to know that it’s an option, if she needs it.
They sit out there until it starts to rain, just talking, and if anyone is watching to report back to her mom at church, they’re not going to find anything untoward happening.
“Are we actually going to do homework now?”
“No, I’ve got a surprise for you.” Steve says. “I think you’ll like it.”
“Should I be worried?” She looks at Jonathan, but he shakes his head.
“No, it’ll be great.”
Inside, Steve’s ditched his crutches to set up the table; it almost looks like he's made them a fancy meal.
“I didn’t know about it until yesterday.” Jonathan tells her, pulling out her chair for her. “He started then and just stayed the night.”
Nancy pushes down the jealousy that flares up. She’s glad that Steve and Jonathan are getting closer, but she can’t help but be upset that she’s not getting the same opportunities to spend time with them.
“He did say I could make dinner, though.”
The table’s only set for three—for the first time since she’s arrived, Nancy wonders where Joyce and Will are.
“Mom took Will to the arcade and then they’re having dinner with El and Hopper at the cabin.” Jonathan answers before she can ask. “Mom was very insistent on clearing out. You’d almost think she’d been waiting for it.”
“She was!” Steve sets down a large pot—one that’s probably too big to use for canned soup, at least. “Jonathan made us soup.”
“And I have to wait and see what you made us?”
“Yes, you do.”
It’s dessert, then, but what type of dessert? How had he managed to make it so that Joanthan hadn’t known about it until yesterday?
Between the three of them, they manage to eat most of the pot. Since they cooked, she clears the table, washing out their bowls while Steve gets his surprise ready for them.
“Wait, is that…”
It’s not exactly like the picture, but it looks like one of the cakes Mrs. Henderson had shown them when they’d asked her for recipes.
“I wanted you and Jonathan to have the first thing I made from it. I still don’t think I can thank you enough for that. I don’t even know how you figured it out.”
That’s easy. They’d gone to his house to get him clothes and a few other things, and they’d snooped.
Well, she’d snooped. Jonathan had stayed in the living room like a good, boring guy who was pretending he didn’t want to know more about his crush. She’d been the one checking the corners of his room, under his bed, the top shelves of his closet (she’d had to go in there anyway to get clothes), and even opening every kitchen cupboard to see if there was a secret passion she could uncover.
It meant they’d been able to give Steve a thoughtful, personalized gift though, so Jonathan had only complained about it a little.
“He spent all day making it.” Jonathan leans over, not quite whispering. “He wanted to wait and bring it over today.”
“Then I reconsidered, because if I made it at the cabin then it might not survive the trip here.” Steve plates them all big pieces—over half the cake, total. “But Jonathan wasn’t too nosy about it. Will kept trying to steal the batter.”
“Will is a well-behaved child who would never do such a thing.” Jonathan can’t keep a straight face.
“Will is a menace like the rest of his friends, but he’s better at hiding it.” Steve counters. “Even Max is a menace, she just likes to pretend otherwise.”
“Okay, so they’re all menaces.” Nancy jumps in. “But I think we can agree that Mike is the worst.”
“Yes.” Steve points at her with his fork. “He is. He still hates me, you know?”
“Oh, he’s faking it now. At least most of it.”
“You two don’t have to live with Will, you don’t know anything about menaces.” Jonathan takes a bite of his cake, and the expression that he can’t keep off of his face afterward ruins the rest of the bit. “He steals all of my stuff, he’s always hiding things from me.”
“No, he’s not.” Steve rolls his eyes. “Sounds like you’re stealing that line from Lucus.”
“And so what if I am?”
“Then it’s a lie. I’m going to have to tell El about this, Jon. If she doesn’t know already.”
“Yeah, Jonathan. Friends don’t lie.” Nancy leans into Steve’s side.
“We’re not friends, though, we’re dating.”
“That just makes it even worse! I might have to take a page out of Munson’s book and get on the table to explain to you.” Steve only wraps an arm around her, though, so he’s not going anywhere.
“He hasn’t done that lately!”
“Well, it’s usually pretty funny, he should!”
“Aren’t you the target of most of his speeches?”
“Nah, not really. He hasn’t taken a dig at Hargrove yet?”
“No. After what happened to you, I don’t think anyone wants to.” With that, Jonathan effectively ends that line of discussion.
Somehow, though, it’s not awkward or weird when they finish eating their cake in silence—Nancy wants to say ‘fuck it’ and eat the entire thing tonight, but it’s so rich that they’d probably all be sick from it.
After everything is cleaned up, they manage to squish together on Jonathan’s bed, but they’re all full and tired. Neither of them even react when she takes her shirt off. She’s pretty sure if she took her pants off it’d be a different story, but she’s not in the mood for that.
“Naptime?” She could probably make Steve move so she can be in the middle, but that would take effort.
“Why does it feel like we always end up napping when we’re together?” Jonathan grumbles.
“Cause we do. We like sleeping, I guess.”
“Sleeping and cuddling.” Nancy corrects. “We always wake up in the weirdest positions.”
“That’s Steve’s fault, he moves so much. And he’s an octopus.”
“If I were actually an octopus, neither of you would leave this bed ever again.”
“That sounds pretty good, actually.” She’s the only one with her eyes open; the boys are both half-asleep already. “Wait, Jon, is your mom going to wake us up when she gets home?”
“Probably, cause you can’t stay the night, can you?” They can’t see it, but she shakes her head.
“No, she’s staying.” Steve turns a little so he can squeeze her. “See if you can get me to let go.”
“I don’t think that’s how it works, Steve.”
“It’s definitely how it works.”
“Stop bickering and go to sleep.” Nancy closes her eyes.
It’d be nice if that’s how it worked; she knows that Steve really wouldn’t let her go, and she really wouldn’t mind.

☁️ 10 tips on studying when your motivation’s nowhere to be found
i got an ask about this yesterday and decided to turn my reply into a post because having trouble focusing when you’re super unmotivated is really common, so i thought more people might find this helpful :) buckle up kiddos, this is gonna be a long one!
1. i want you to remember that this is a universal experience.
every student out there struggles like hell sometimes, and that’s completely normal; you’re not a machine and that means you can’t possibly churn out work 24/7 without burning out. so try not to beat yourself up too much okay, you’re doing great!
2. take a deep breath and identify the reason you’re feeling like this
are you burnt out because of stress or overworking yourself? are you overwhelmed by the amount of tasks on your plate? is there a particular assignment or exam scaring you to the point where you don’t want to start studying? these are all normal reasons for lack of motivation and knowing the why will help you figure out the how - you gotta know the problem to solve it.
3. i know you feel like you’re months behind, but start small
small achievements accumulate. repeat this sentence to yourself daily, write it on a sticky note and keep it on the wall above your desk (it’s exactly what i did). break up daunting tasks into smaller ones; got a billion formulae to know by heart? memorise 3 every day (you’ll have memorised more than 20 by the end of the week!). got a long chapter to study? divide it into smaller chunks and just focus on 1-3 pages a day. slow and steady, you can do it
4. the pomodoro technique is a lifesaver!
i always use this technique when i’m feeling unmotivated and cannot focus. sometimes, your mind just won’t stop wandering off and so scheduling regular breaks is a must! try going for 25 minutes of work, followed by a 5 minute break, then repeat the cycle :) you’ll be less tempted to prolong your break if you know there’s another one coming in less than half an hour. if 25min is too long, try just 15 minutes of focus and work your way up form there - there’s no shame in studying in really short bursts! sometimes that’s all you can bring yourself to do and that’s okay! and if you can, i really recommend a 45/15 or 50/10 ratio (those are the ratios me and my friend - 2nd year med students - use the most :))
5. track your productivity
use the forest mobile app or a hand-drawn productivity tracker in your bujo - a visual representation of productivity will activate the reward system part of your brain. it’s the same part that’s involved in addiction formation and you can use it to your advantage - get a mini high from seeing your effort, not only from seeing your results!
6. set up a reward system
continuing on that tangent: sometimes, a short break isn’t enough motivation to stay focused. sometimes, you gotta pull a little sneaky on yourself and bribe your brain. some examples: - ‘if i can manage to reach 3 hours of productivity today, i’ll watch my fave movie in the evening’ - ‘i’ll have a bubble bath once i finish reading this chapter’ - ‘if i complete this assignment by the end of the week, i can do absolutely nothing the whole day come Saturday’
7. consider different sources/modes of studying
switching things up can do wonders; try making flashcards on quizlet, watching youtube videos on the topics you’ll be tested on, you can read wikipedia articles (wikipedia is severely underrated!), browse for podcasts on the topic, there’s a million different ways to learn, not just sitting down and reading from your textbook for hours on end :) on a similar note, if you have the option, try studying elsewhere - go to the kitchen table or study on the floor - beware of the bed and sofa! not a good idea, you’ll most likely end up taking a nap.
8. take care of your body and your mental health
have you drunk enough water today? have you eaten enough vitamin-rich foods? make a healthy snack! or get your fave comfort food, that works too, extra serotonin :) have you been outside in the past 3 days? if not, i highly recommend a short walk outside (if your corona regulations allow it, ofc). i know getting out of your house is hard, i suck at it myself, but getting fresh air and direct sunlight is crucial for your wellbeing! think of yourself as a slightly more complicated house plant:) you gotta nourish to flourish!
9. stop for a second and think how you value your work.
i’m sure you’ve done more than you give yourself credit for. it may seem too little, a drop in the sea of assignments you’ve yet to hand in, but every single minute of effort counts! every little task you do brings you closer to your goal! replied to a school email? good for you, you’ve got your correspondence covered and your professor knows you’re working hard. took 3 minutes to clear your study space? wonderful, a fresh setup = a fresh mindset! got more than 6 hours of sleep? yay, your brain had time to recuperate from a day’s worth of activities!
10. and again, you are not alone in this!
i promise there are at least 50 other people feeling exactly the same as you at any given moment. we all struggle with the same things, in one way or another, and motivating each other always helps. whether it be aggressive pep talks or gentle words of encouragement, studyblrs always have each other’s backs and you can message practically anyone in this community if you’re in need of support :) our job is to hype each other up and watch as we reach our respective goals <3

You actually fell asleep without anything too untoward happening, just kissing and cuddling and whispers that didn't make much sense to each other but still made your heart flutter each time.
Waking up, though, was another story entirely.
"Arăți frumos în timp ce dormi," he mumbled into the crook of your neck, pulling your hips back so you could feel his hard cock against your ass. You hummed and snuggled up closer to him, bathing in his warmth as much as possible.
“I swear I’ve never slept so well in my life,” you mumbled as you reached back to run your hands through the hair at the nape of his neck. “I need you in my bed all the time so I can finally get some rest.”
He smiled against your skin, sucking on that spot just behind your ear that made your eyes roll back in your head. “Il vrei?” he asked huskily, and you didn’t even care what he was asking; when he said it like that, the answer was always ‘yes.’ You nodded happily, biting your lip, as he started to push your panties down and helped you arch your back so he could guide his cock to your entrance.
You still gasped and clutched at the sheets beneath you, you couldn’t help it even if it wasn’t your first time discovering how thick he was. It was just barely painful for one fleeting moment before it faded into that delightful fullness, his strokes long and slow as he sighed against your ear. “Seba,” you whimpered under your breath.

You could feel it in the way he moved inside you, too; he was clearly holding back, like there was a storm beneath his calm surface.
You wanted all of it. Turning back, you kissed him and pulled his hair a little, hoping it would get the point across. It seemed to, considering how he gasped and sped up, fucking you harder and deeper as you moaned a little louder than you meant to.
“Când a fost aici, am vrut să te sărut,” he continued in a low voice, speaking right against your parted lips. “Am vrut ca soțul tău să vadă. Am vrut să te arunc în patul ăsta și să te fac să țipi, pentru ca toată lumea să te audă. Am vrut să știe că sunt eu.”
“Yours,” you said before you could stop yourself, and thankfully you didn’t have to worry too much about the implications of it because he couldn’t understand what you meant. He grabbed your face anyways, stroking your cheek with his thumb as he stared into your eyes.
“A mea,” he purred, fucking you faster until you started to whine and arch your back harder.
“F-fuck, I’m gonna—” you stammered, but he nodded before you could finish, encouraging you with whispered words and a hand slipping down between your legs to rub your swollen clit. You cried out, instinctively reaching out to grab his arm, but he held fast and kept up the pace, sending you tumbling over the edge before you had really prepared yourself for it. Unintentionally, you held your breath for a few moments as it washed over you, the tension releasing finally with a long sigh.
The very moment you began the denouement from your peak, he pulled out and rolled you onto your back, slipping right back in as he slotted his body between your legs. You whimpered and gripped his shoulders, and he got right back to his pace— but this time your body couldn’t take as much of the force and so it began to rock the bed, his headboard slamming into the wall. At first neither of you cared until he glanced up and hissed, “rahat.”
“What?” you asked, sitting up and craning your head around to see he’d clearly damaged the wallpaper there. “Oops,” you giggled, “guess we should take a break and fix that—”
He pushed you back down onto the bed as you yelped, capturing you in a hungry kiss; one arm slipped under your shoulders, holding you tight, while the other reached up so his hand could grip the headboard and hold it still as he started to pound into you again. You moaned weakly and relaxed in his embrace, feeling the bed still rock slightly under you but much more interested in the feeling of his cock slamming right into the most sensitive and overstimulated spots inside your channel.
“Oh god,” you sighed as you couldn’t stop your head from falling back into the pillow, closing your eyes to dodge the way he stared down at you with an intensity that bordered on fury. He moved in to bite at your neck instead, and if you were any more in touch with reality you would’ve complained that you didn’t bring many clothes that would cover his bite marks, but you were much too lost in the sensation he was bringing you for that.
“Atât de bine, atât de bine,” he chanted with a growl, “voi veni… atât de aproape…”
“Yes,” you whimpered, “please, Seba— yes, right there, oh fuck!”
You came again, technically, but it was nothing like the first time— more shallow but less brief, like the pleasure was spread thinner and wider, until you worried your vision would go completely black. He grunted loudly as he filled you, still thrusting roughly with each pump of his release into you, but finally he slowed and sighed, his breaths coming hard and fast as he let go of the headboard and held you tightly.
He seemed exhausted, honestly, and you laughed breathlessly as he collapsed on top of you. “You can’t be so worn out this early in the morning,” you scolded as you kissed his shoulder.
“Nu voi mai părăsi niciodată acest pat,” he groaned.
“At least let me up so I can shower!” you protested, trying to push his limp weight off of you and failing pitifully as you laughed.
“Nu, nici tu nu vei părăsi niciodată acest pat,” he cooed, covering your face in kisses as you laughed harder. Only when you defensively pinched his arm did he pull back and pull out, letting you slip out from under him.
“I’ll be back soon,” you promised as kissed him on the cheek, dashing to the bathroom and getting one last glance at him shaking out his sore hand before you shut the door.
Chapter 38 done… only five more to go, if your outline was to be trusted (which it most certainly should not). Still, you were finally reaching the real height of the tension, the climax of the story likely to hit as soon as the next chapter.
But it wasn’t what you were expecting. It wasn’t what you thought you would write when you sat down here months ago and began with page 1. In fact, it was better.
You sighed a little, looking away from the typewriter for the first time in maybe an hour or more, glancing out the window where the sun was starting to set and painting the whole countryside in an orange glow; but it wasn’t the only thing making the leaves change colors— fall was undeniably on the way, enough so that poor Sebastian was raking leaves already. And, because evil is a real and powerful force in this world, he had started wearing a shirt while working outside.
Not that it wasn’t still buckets of fun to watch him go: you found yourself leaning against the window frame to drink in the sight of him, smiling widely to yourself as he sighed and wiped his brow.
All of a sudden, he turned and caught you ogling, making him grin and you laugh with embarrassment. He waved at you, and you waved back, resigning to getting back to work for just a few more pages…
The creaking of the stairs made you realize someone was coming, but with Sebastian just outside it could only be Mrs. Alberti. With a sinking feeling in your gut, you ran to the closet to rifle through your sweaters, hoping to find something with a high neck. Nothing looked long enough, making you groan in frustration.
She knocked on the door and you jumped slightly. “One moment!” you called out to her, digging up a random scarf and throwing it around your neck to hastily cover the bruises Sebastian had left on you. “Yes, come in,” you finally sighed with relief as you threw yourself back into the chair.
“Good evening,” Mrs. Alberti smiled sweetly as she peeked through the crack in the door, “I just wanted to offer to cook dinner here tonight. I’m making a big recipe so I figured I might as well, unless you had your own plans.”
“No, that would be lovely,” you nodded, “thank you.”
“Just come downstairs in about, oh, fifteen minutes and it’ll be ready,” she explained.
“You don’t want any help in the kitchen?”
She scoffed a little. “From you?”
You chuckled at her brutal honesty. “Okay, point taken.”
“Sorry, dear, it’s just that I wouldn’t want your… Western sensibilities to muck up the recipe,” she defended.
“I can’t blame you,” you smirked. “I’ll be down in a quarter hour.”
She nodded and shut the door again, leaving you to unwrap the itchy scarf from your neck and let out a slow breath.
Of course, with an imminent deadline you couldn’t actually get any good work done, so you just read back over some older chapters and made a couple simple edits. All too soon, you checked the clock and realized you should go ahead and make your way to the kitchen.
You took a deep breath as you stepped into the entryway where the smell of Mrs. Alberti’s cooking emanated through the rest of the house. It brought back memories of when you were here with Michael and she cooked for the both of you. Those memories were wonderful once, then soured, but now you were coming to appreciate them again. Although, it was easier to enjoy them when you imagined the black eye your soon-to-be-ex was likely sporting now.
You took a seat at the table and let her serve you, even though it made you feel a little guilty; you knew she would never let you serve yourself when she was cooking.
“How’s your novel coming along, dear?” she asked as she took her own seat and you began eating.
“Well,” you began with a little sigh, “stories have a mind of their own, Mrs. Alberti. All this time I thought I was writing a thriller— something scary, gritty, maybe even tragic. But I’m coming up on the end of it and I’m realizing that all this time, I’ve been writing a romance.”
She smiled, glancing behind you to the doorway. “Yes, things have a funny way of turning out differently than we expect.”
Wondering what she was looking at, you turned to find Sebastian leaning against the wood frame, wiping his hands on a towel. “Bună seara,” he greeted.
“Sit down, Sebastian, have some dinner,” she offered to him as she stood up to pour him a new portion of soup.
He nodded and sat at the table, “multumesc,” he mumbled when she put a bowl in front of him.
You fell into a comfortable silence after that, everyone eating their meals quietly. It was nice to have a moment of normalcy— your new normal— after such an eventful day previous.
“So,” Mrs. Alberti broke the silence unexpectedly, “you two had sex?”
You instantly spat out your sip of soup, making Sebastian give you a concerned look; you waved dismissively as if to say you were fine, though you coughed a couple times. “I… uhm— how did you—?”
“He was whistling while he gardened today,” she explained, “and you look the happiest I’ve ever seen you.”
“To be fair, I think the first thing is because he punched my husband yesterday morning,” you added with a little laugh.
“And the second thing?”
“...at least partially because he punched my husband yesterday morning,” you admitted.
“Fair enough,” she chuckled, “but don’t think I don’t see the way your shoulders aren’t so tense and you’re smiling all the time. I know a woman in love when I see one.”
“L-love?” you questioned instantly, choking on the word.
“Oh, honey,” she sighed, almost a look of pity on her face, “did you not know? It’s all over your face.”
You took a slow breath and pondered your meal before taking another bite. “No… I knew,” you admitted, “I guess you just put it really bluntly.”
She smiled. “It’s how we do things in Hungary. You should be honest with him.”
“With what words?”
“Sounds like you don’t need them,” she smirked. “I’ll leave you two be, then. You’ll have to tell me how it goes.”
She bid Sebastian goodnight with a little wave, and he nodded back happily; with the back door shut as she headed to her own house, you two were alone again. He took a sip of his soup and you finally noticed the marks on his spoon-holding hand.
“Your hand…” you realized, pointing to it, remembering with burning cheeks how he got that injury.
“Ah,” he smiled, looking down at the purple knuckles and smiling as he rubbed them gently. “Un sacrificiu demn.”
After dinner, you picked up with some reading (so much more relaxing than writing, believe it or not) and Sebastian joined you for the same on the couch.
Just laying together like this— quiet, relaxed, and totally at peace— was igniting feelings inside you that you had gone without for so long that you’d forgotten they existed completely. Resting your head on his chest, between the unbuttoned halves of his shirt, you could hear his heartbeat and it was soothing yet invigorating somehow.
He held his book up over your head while you used one hand to hold yours open and read through the space between his chest and his arm. It wasn’t the most ergonomic position necessarily, and your arm was definitely getting tired, but it was worth it to be close to him in these little ways.
"Book?" he asked innocently after a long stint of silent reading, setting his own aside to look down at you.
You closed your book and looked back up at him, resting your chin on his chest. "The book I'm reading? It's good," you nodded (as much as you could without stabbing him in the sternum with your chin, that is).
"Nu, book ta," he clarified, poking your forehead, before making a motion like he was typing.
"My book!" you realized. "Yes, the book I'm writing, it's nearly done…"
Your heart started to sink inside your chest.
"And when it's done, I'll go back to London. Like I planned from the beginning. And it'll be published and I'll start from scratch at a new life… alone.”
You cleared your throat and looked away. “Ești în regulă?” he asked quietly, sounding concerned.
You shook yourself out of it, smiling back up at him. “Let’s go into the city tomorrow,” you decided. “I need some things, if I’m going to be staying longer…”
He seemed to appreciate that you were telling him something, but couldn’t determine what. “Nyíregyháza,” you explained, “let’s drive into the city.” You pantomimed a steering wheel to explain yourself better.
“Ah,” he nodded, “nu într-o mașină. Îmi luăm bicicleta.” He returned with the motion of steering a bike— and when he curled his fingers to rev the proverbial engine, you realized he meant a motorbike. “Motocicletă,” he smiled.

“No,” the man shook his head. “I can do it right here, so I can explain along the way.”
“Perfect.” Natsu then called his secretary and requested she double his lunch order due to an extended meeting.
While the computer tech fiddled, Natsu just sat back with his meal, watching him work. Math wasn’t his strong suit— nor academics for that matter. Growing up, his father had always told him he would be next in line as boss, so he only learned what he needed to for that world. One needed strength, cunning, street smarts, not book smarts. Though he had to admit the things these hackers could do was scary when you thought about it. Lucy was lucky in that her best friend was just a wiz at language— including computer languages. It all looked like gibberish, but the woman interpreted it almost like a savant. According to Jerome, from what he’d seen so far, Levy was not yet at his skill level, but that could easily change with time and experience like he’d been through.
“Natsu you—” Gray paused his knock on the doorframe. “Sorry, I thought the meeting would be done by now.”
“It’s fine, Jerome is hacking Lucy’s system for me right now.” Natsu responded with a grin. “Now I’ll see what she’s up to in real time.”
Gray groaned and ran a hand down his face in disgust. “I’m not even gonna respond to that. But I will tell you I told you so when it blows up in your face later.”
“Tch. She won’t know, right Jerome?”
“She shouldn’t unless you touch something.” The man answered while continuing to type.
“See. It’ll be fine.”
“You’re an idiot. Anyway,” Gray waved a hand nonchalantly as he left, “call me when your free to go over the new orders.”
“It will be fine, right?” Natsu asked Jerome a second time with a bit of anxiety in his tone.
Jerome stopped typing. “As long as you just observe they shouldn’t see you, just don’t get excited and touch something.”
“I don’t plan to; not like I’ll know how to do that anyways.”
“I’m almost finished, but do you want me to turn on her web camera so you can see through it?”
“But she won’t see me?”
“No, for you it’ll just be like watching a one-way video feed with image and audio.”
After a momentary pause, Natsu’s eyes narrowed with a mischievous grin. “Do it.”
Being able to see Lucy every day and feed his addiction was just too tempting, ‘I’m turning into a junky.’ But Gray’s words entered his mind. What if the man was right, could this bite him in the ass later? Probably… Though how bad could it really be? He really had no plans to interfere with Lucy’s business, just her personal life— and yes, he knew it sounded horrible. What right did he have to stalk his ex? None. ‘I just worry about her, is that so wrong?’ Lucy’s tough, but she’s just a woman and their world didn’t always treat women fairly. His desire to protect her bordered neuroticism, but could anyone blame him considering the underworld they worked in. ‘I’m just doing it to protect her,’ Natsu justified it to himself. Guys like Gray who haven’t fallen in love yet, ‘they just don’t understand.’ If anything were to happen to Lucy, he didn’t know what he would do. Probably move Heaven and earth and kill any in his way for what they’d done.
It took just over an hour before Jerome finished installing the spyware and making sure the systems were still secured. Just a one-way mirror that Levy shouldn’t catch unless really digging for it. Another 20 minutes were spent explaining to Natsu how to do the accessing part, including pulling up the webcam whenever he wanted to. “Or just leave it running,” Jerome noted. “It’ll just show up in this window,” he pointed towards the screen, “and as long as you don’t log out completely from your computer it’ll stay open.”
“Who turns off their computers?”
“Actually, it’s a good idea to turn them off now and then so any software updates can be completed, but since I manage your systems, there’s not really a need to.”
“Great.” The two men stood up and shook hands. “Thanks, Jerome.”
“It was my pleasure.”
When Natsu arrived each day at headquarters, the first thing and last thing he did was check to see if there was anything new or interesting going on Lucy’s side. It was like being hooked on one of their products, because the high it gave sucked him right in. But so far, he also stayed away from the video feed. Looking through her calendar or emails were cold and impersonal, but maybe the video was too close, too real, too much of a moral dilemma in crossing that line of a peeping Tom. That didn’t mean his addiction may one day require more feeding…
October had rolled around, and the air outside grew crisp and cold. It was a beautiful time of the year with the color changing leaves, reminding that winter was soon upon them. How quickly the time sure flew. The Dragneel Yakuza clan had already started preparing for their end of year Bonenkai to happen in mid-December. This plus the Shinnenkai in January were the two biggest parties the clan threw for all their members. The first is to forget the stresses of the past year, while the other was to welcome a successful new year. Natsu spared no expense on the food and drinks to take care of the loyalty and hard work their members contributed. From the emails, he knew that Lucy’s group had also started preparing for theirs. ‘Maybe I’ll crash her party,’ he mused to himself. ‘Oh, what’s this?’ His eyes fell on a new email of an appointment reminder for the next day. It was for Lucy’s monthly massage at an upscale spa. Natsu checked his own calendar and noticed he had nothing booked, no meetings, no shipments arriving— a perfect opportunity.
The next day, Natsu went to the spa early and spoke directly to the owner, paying them a nice chunk of change to allow him access and to play along. Lucy was scheduled for 2pm and arrived right on time. So, as he waited behind the scenes, the receptionist acted like normal and directed her inside. She had a regular masseuse, something Natsu knew he couldn’t fake upfront, so that person stood inside the room to greet her.
“Welcome, Ms. Heartfilia. I’ll step out while you get ready. Please lie on your stomach like normal.”
“Thank you, Kenji,” Lucy smiled. She’d been coming here for a couple years and was aware of the routine. The male masseuse had strong, but gentle hands and knew her body well by now.
Natsu had to admit he wasn’t happy to find out Lucy’s regular masseuse was a guy but held back from lashing out. He didn’t want to do anything to mess up this adventure— and oh, he planned to have his own revenge. It wouldn’t be as sexual as the soapland incident but knowing many of her trigger points meant he could do a bit of damage well enough. Now, Natsu had noted that Kenji’s voice was a bit deeper than his own, which would be difficult to fake, but the man explained he didn’t do much talking while working and played relaxing music during the session. Perfect. Natsu could just hit play and not talk at all.
“Ready, Ms. Heartfilia?” Kenji called out through the closed door.
The muffled yes was heard, and the man stepped away, leaving Natsu to his business. He entered the room and immediately turned on the pre-set music, a light instrumental with Asian undertones. It was quite pleasing to listen to. And there Lucy was under a silk sheet to cover her naked body, with her arms up and crossed, head perched on the relaxed hands, and hair up in a loose bun, revealing her beautiful neck. Natsu almost shuddered at the sight and knowledge he would get to touch her skin… it was the one thing she didn’t allow him to do at Soapland— touch. His grin grew as he rubbed his hands together to warm them before making the first move.
He moved the sheet to uncover Lucy’s lower half, up to the thighs, then applied a film of scented massage oils to his hands with a few drops over the taut muscles along her long legs, chasing the dripping liquid along her skin to smooth them over. His hands glide through several passes to the swell of her ass, then back down again all the way to the ankles, fingers applying pressure against the tendons and ligaments to gently work out any tension it encountered. Lucy sighed wispily as his hands massaged each foot, squeezing, smoothing, paying attention to each digit and every curve. His thumbs applied pressure at the arches, kneading the tight knots there from wearing heels all day long. He stayed focused on the area, her toes curling and flexing as the mewls leaching from her show their pleasure, until Natsu felt the knots give and relax away.
“Mmm, you’re getting good at that Kenji,” Lucy purred with a little huskiness in her tone.
Natsu grinned to himself as he lowered the sheet back down, so she stayed warm and moved onto her supple ass. Using both hands, he took his time to knead each cheek through the silken fabric, using his fingers to follow the gluteus muscles, starting near the leg, and following the swell of her curve upwards, slowly riding the fibers looking for any knots or tense areas. One cheek, then the other paying loving attention to and listening to the sounds Lucy made to clue him in on where to go. Every sigh a notch in his belt, each mewling purr a win. Natsu grew bolder, fanning out his thumb each time it got closer to her thighs to touch…
“Oh, Kenji,” Lucy whined, “you’re being a naughty boy today— keep it up.”
‘What?!’ Natsu’s hands paused and tensed for a split second before catching himself. Does Kenji mess with her too?! He shook his head and finished up in the area quickly trying not to let such thoughts stop him. ‘Just focus…’ Natsu grumbled in his head.
After applying more oil to his hands, he moved the sheet down to reveal Lucy’s back and for a second time, Natsu paused on what it contained. Her tattoo… It symbolized… he took a deep breath and dropped more oil on to the skin, willing away the memories breaching his mind. He didn’t want to think about it, not now. It was too painful.
“You okay, Kenji?” Lucy questioned as if noticing the slight pause or tremble in the man’s hands.
Natsu mumbled a soft Mmhmm and dived into the massage so Lucy wouldn’t grow more concerned, missing the uptick in the corners of her lips. He slowly smoothed along the skin using the base of his palms for pressure, each hand following the muscles, moving out from the waist, up the center of her back, and flaring out towards the sides just below the shoulder blades, repeating the same movement, each time increasing the speed while lessening the pressure. Next, he targeted the upper back and shoulder blades, an area he knew Lucy held a lot of tension from carrying the weight of her voluptuous bosoms. With precise ministrations, Natsu applied careful pressure with his thumbs and follows the curve of the blades up and around to the top of the shoulder. He then searched with the pads of his fingers for any knots along her trap muscles, moving up along the spine and fanning out to the top of her shoulders.
“Oh, yeah, right there,” Lucy mewled when he reached a specific spot.
The area around her spine, between the shoulder blades held the most tension and knots from constantly holding the upright, flexed posture that wearing heels will create. Her wispy sighs signaled the release of her tense muscles, bringing another wave of pride swelling in him. Natsu continued onto her neck, his strong hands kneaded the supple flesh, fingers palpating and soothing all the knots. Her neck too, held a few tense areas, especially around the base of the head, so he did his best to melt them away. He worked through Lucy’s mewls and moaning sighs, almost sexual in nature, aroused and a little heated in the face knowing his handiwork brought forth such sounds. Ugh, how he wanted to hear more of it! Lucy putty in his hands and spread between his thighs, calling out his name…
“You’ve gotten better at this… Natsu,” the cocky teasing tone, snapped him out of his dream.
“Natsu?” He tried failingly to disguise his voice. “I’m Kenji, Ms. Heartfilia.”
“Uh-huh. You think I can’t tell the difference Natsu?” Lucy quipped back with a chuckle. “Kenji’s routine is very different. Plus, I knew the moment I smelled your cologne.”
Busted.
“Tch. Well, if you knew it was me all along, why’d you let me do this?”
“Making you work is my payback.” She settled back down, relaxed on her arms. “Now, chop, chop, finish the job.”
This little minx! He was the one supposed to be torturing her this time, not the other way around! “Fine, kitten.” Natsu gritted out a smile and took hold of her neck again to placate and lull Lucy back into thinking he would go along. He massaged the sides with the tips of his fingers Both hands wrapped around, and his thumbs pushing up through her hair against the muscles on the back of her head.
“If only you’d taken care of me like this before,” Lucy mumbled.
Natsu paused and leaned over her ear. “Why not let me take care of you now?”
“You know the answer to that.”
“No, I don’t know the answer, that’s part of the problem!”
Lucy sighed. “Natsu, I don’t want to fight right now. I’m here to relax, not fight. If you’re done, then leave and send Kenji back in.”
“Oh, yeah. Why? Because he’s another one of your boy toys? He gonna be naughty again with you once I leave?!”
“Pfft, I said that knowing it was you, idiot.”
“I think you live to torture me, Angel. But you’re right. I don’t wanna fight right now either, so—” Natsu leaned down quick and latched his mouth onto the area between her shoulder blades, sucking hard.
Lucy squealed and reached back frantically trying to claw at his face, but he grabbed her hands, knowing if she struggled any harder, she risked completely exposing herself. He held her for a few seconds, and once satisfied he’d achieved his goal, let go.
“Natsu! Did you put a hickey on me?!”
“This Angel,” he trailed his fingers over Lucy’s tattoo as he spoke, “belongs to me. Will always be mine,” he whispered close to her ear. “You know it, I know it, and your boy toys will know it too.”
“I hate you.”
“Nah,” Natsu stood up and covered her back up with the sheet. “You hate that you don’t hate me. It’s okay. I still love you too. See ya around kitten.”
Natsu heard the woman’s sigh as the door closed behind him and smiled to himself. He knew she didn’t actually hate him, their relationship was just complicated at the moment, never love the actual problem between them… Though, it had been a dick move to give her a hickey, but that’s what Lucy gets for leading him on like that. She could’ve just stopped the massage immediately if she knew it was him all along, so to let him go through the entire process, it was tit for tat— and hey, at least it’s only temporary.

Alpha
Chapter 1 - Alpha having a full head of hair is very funny to me. He should be glad he's not bald like his brother.
- Why is the woman the only one with a normal name? Chris vs Alpha and Counceller. Also how come she's wearing jeans instead of leather pants like them?
- Wait, they get paid??? Oh nvrmind they get paid in 'restorative medicine'.
- Doctor Heinel... Gonna forget his name in 2 mins <3
- Man asks Alpha whether the checkups are boring and then goes :/ when the answer is yes sjisisoso. What did you expect bro? 'No because I'm in love with you and every moment with you is bliss'?
- And he looks like he's having a crisis out of guilt when Alpha leaves. Which... I mean yeah I hope so he is a Union modifications scientist.
Chapter 2 - Ah yes the Councellor look alike. His name is Jax which I will also forget soon.
- Team Hades... I wonder if they were related in any way to Cerberus. Maybe also created by Aris but weaker?
- Anyway the hoop hood squad has arrived. Evil lady ily. Also funny that they have a dress code when nobody else in the Union seemed to aside from Elders in white and gold.
- What's with these teams being named after the leaders? Leader of team Alpha is Alpha and leader of team Hades is Hades :/
Chapter 3 - Doctor Heinel helps people escape but he's not always successful :(
- You're right evil lady. First priority is looks. You must be suffering greatly with your ugly teammates.
Chapter 4 - Is normal gym equipment even that useful for modified humans?
- Okay the equipment isn't normal but also not useful for the stronger ones. Makes sense.
- Hello random guy that looks like the P5 protagonist.
- I don't think being chosen for fully tested experiments makes you an 'elite' tbh... If the 'specimens' survived experiments that weren't the end procedure than isn't it likely they'd have been suitable for the fully tested ones?
- Poor Grain. First the chief makes many ppl in his team be experimented on again for something that wasn't their fault, and now team Hades is being typical shit at him and the others :(
- I still have no clue what they mean by central office. Surely the Union doesn't have a centralised office considering the Elders are... uncooperative. Maybe that's just how they refer to those in the Elders payroll.
Chapter 5 - Must be hard for Councellor being the only one with a brain.
- Oh Heinel knows team Hades? And who the hell is this mysterious man who wished for Heinel to return? Maybe Twelfth Elder if I hc they're also made by Aris?
Chapter 6 - Oh huh. That guy who didn't listen to Heinel didn't die. Or maybe what he did was part of Heinel's plan? I wouldn't think so since I doubt he'd be okay with causing the guards to become experiment fodder.
- Oh this is where all the 'specimens' Heinel saved were. Violent organisation my ass. The Union doesn't get any say in that.
- Poor doctor Gaurin :(
- Huh he knew Alpha. Through Heinel? Or maybe he helped with the experiments on him.
Chapter 7 - Yeah Alpha... the Union isn't just. They go for the most efficient method which is almost always a massacre.
- Jax you're picking a fight with a guy whose emotions are muted. Alpha doesn't know how to suck up to people, much less care about that.
- Aaaand he told the chief about the dead not-dead people... Idiot.
Oh ofc there's a fifth member of Hades. Ninja guy. So far we have three names. Hades, Simon the main asshole, and Jai the ninja.
Chapter 8 - 'After we explained many times-' you just said you wanted in like twice. If you'd waited like 5 minutes for the poor guy to contact the chief there would have been no commotion :/
Chapter 9 - Yeaaah I knew Jai would catch Alpha.
Chapter 10 - And Jai's dead.
Oh so Alpha's whole family was experimented on? That's very sad :( I guess I'll hc his family as being poor then. Or perhaps it was only M-24 in which case... yeah.
Chapter 11 - Grain and his teammates get the worst end of everything :(((
Chapter 12 - Chris is just all 'We're a found family dumbass now let's go.' Councellor is still going insane. But seriously... THAT'S NOT HOW EMOTIONS WORK. Why tf are they bringing up sensory organs when it comes to that. Like yes I'm sure every one of you has brain damage and thus muted emotions or none is likely for many of you but your explanations suck.
Chapter 14 - Gonna hc that since Grain is somewhat like M-24 he's viewed as an older brother figure by most of the people in the facility, not only by his own team members. Alpha especially though ofc he doesn't realise it unlike Councellor who's very aware of his own emotions.
Chapter 16 - Loved Heinel's spiel. 'I am with the Union and thus a traitor to humanity' like yes king exactly <3
- Grain with a machine gun! And he's dead iwi
Chapter 17 - Okay the last dude of team Hades was called Gusp. Just the evil lady left.
Chapter 18 - The human race wanted power sure but not human modification bro.
- I see that Alpha decided Heinel was his (other) paternal figure. Not that he knew this either.
Chapter 19 - Evil lady's dead and we didn't even learn her name.
- Chris and Councellor are dead too :(
- Two specimens left? Oh is it M-21 and M-24? Waiting period of few years before they were made into 'worthless agents'. Hell, they wouldn't even have realised that they were put into medically induced comas for years/decades.
Chapter 20 - Hmm the silhouettes definitely fit.
- YEAH IT'S THEM!!!
- The tragedy... M-24's younger brother died so he could live. And yet he only repeated that cycle, dying for the kids.
- Everyone is fucking dead. The end. All thanks to the korean fans 🙃🤡

It’s hot.
Like “laying naked in the middle of your apartment with the air cranked and every fan blowing on you” hot.
I’m one of the lucky ones.
My old apartment was renovated to include central air a few years before I moved in.
Still, the humidity was smothering.
So why was I putting a full face of makeup on, knowing damn well I’m gonna sweat it off before the end of the night?
Because why the hell not?
It’s the first time I’ve made plans with the girls in months, and I deserve to feel pretty, even if only for an hour or two.
My therapist tells me I’m making progress.
And it finally feels like I am.
I don’t hate the day before it even starts when I wake up.
I hardly close my curtains anymore.
I’d like to say that with her help, everything went back to normal.
I go to work and come home. I hang out with my friends, water my potted plants. Talk to Spencer like I never confessed my love for him.
But it didn’t.
I haven’t really spoken to Spencer since the day I left.
I’ve wanted to.
I’ve wanted to tell him that I’m here. I’m still here. That I’m always going to be here.
That I care about him more than probably life itself.
Ever since I came back, we’ve had to work together, and we’ve had a few small conversations, but nothing like what we used to have.
I crave those conversations.
How we would bounce back and forth from idea to idea, topic to topic without so much as breaking a sweat.
The late night conversations about the probability of aliens, and life on the opposite side of the universe.
I crave him, and the intimacy he brought.
Lately though, he’s been coming to work with a sullen look on his face.
He shows up earlier, and stays later, drowning himself in his paperwork.
When her calls interrupt a caseload, he no longer eagerly picks up to hear what she has to say.
All I want to do is walk over and ask him how he’s doing. How the married life is treating him. If there’s anything I can do to help lift his spirits.
But I can’t.
I’d be overstepping a boundary I didn’t even know I created that night out on the balcony.
Knocking on my door snaps me out of my daze, and I quickly cap my lipstick, making my way towards my front door where my night stands, waiting.
JJ, Emily, and Penelope are waiting, big smiles and laughter bubbling from their lips.
I let the smile spread across my face.
“I just need to grab my shoes and then I’ll be ready.” I usher them into my hallway, running back to my bedroom to grab the pair of heels resting by my closet.
I sit on my bed, slipping them on with ease and grabbing my bag on my way out.
They all ooh and ahh when I step into the light of my kitchen, and JJ grabs my hand, twirling me in place so they can get a better look at my outfit.
“I almost forgot you had party attire, y/n.”
“God, I wish I had an ass like that. I’m older than you. That’s not fair.” Emily says, landing a playful slap against the fabric of my skirt.
“Oh stop it, you flatter me.” Once upon a time, the attention would have made me antsy. The voice in my head would whisper that they were lying to me, that they really thought I was the ugliest thing in existence.
That was then, and this is now. Now the confidence shines off of me like a spotlight.
“You deserve to be flattered, you beautiful goddess you.” Penelope says, her hands waving in the air.
I take a look in the new mirror that hangs in my hallway, and I can’t help but agree. The tight black skirt accentuates my curves, the low cut golden crop top that sticks to me like another skin puts the girls on display, and my heels give me legs for days.
I look damn good.
“Okay okay okay, pre-game selfie!” Penelope grabs her phone and holds up in front of her while we gather around.
She snaps the picture and within a few quick taps, a buzzing emits from my bag.
I dig my phone out, seeing the picture pop up in my notifications.
JJ has her arms wrapped around me, and I’m pressed to Penelope's side. Emily stands over us, one hand on JJ’s shoulder, the other on Penelopes.
I don’t think I could fake a smile like the one on my face even if I wanted to.
I save it to my phone.

If I thought being in my house, alone, with air conditioning was bad, then I shouldn't have even bothered coming out.
The bar, albeit small, was packed.
Even if there was a breeze, or any airflow at all, the combined body heat of the crowd would have swallowed it up.
I couldn’t really bring it in me to care all that much, though.
The dim lights and heat left my skin with a sexy shine, bringing attention to all the right places.
I could feel the eyes on me.
The ones belonging to men wanting to drown their sorrows in a woman like me, one who appears vulnerable, willing to go along for the ride.
It’s been a while, since I’ve had the attention of the opposite gender, especially this very specific kind of attention.
It feels good, in a way. To be wanted so openly. But it doesn’t mean jack to me, not if it’s not the pair of eyes I’ve been desperate to catch.
I should stop thinking about him.
It’s a girls night out. I don’t have to think, or worry about anything.
Besides, he’s probably busy doing other things. Thinking about me is the last thing on his mind.
I laugh and take a sip from the Shirley temple sitting in front of me, laughing as JJ recounts a story about will and a botched attempt at breakfast in bed.
I pick a cherry up from the fizzy drink, and bite the end off, relishing in the sweet flavor. I pop the stem in my mouth, twirling it around my tongue as I listen to the conversation, pulling it between my teeth and setting it down on the table in a knot.
“Oh my god. Did you just tie a cherry stem with your tongue?” Penelope is cheesing from the other side of the table, the bright pink straw of her margarita almost to her lips.
I laugh, holding it up for them to inspect.
“You know what that means.” Emily says, taking a sip from her own drink, before continuing her thought. “You, my friend, can give great head.”
A blush covers my cheek, but I cock an eyebrow. “Who told you?”
The three women burst into high pitched laughter, and I see Pen pull out her phone. She holds it up to me.
“Do it again. The internet needs to be blessed with this knowledge.”
I chuckle again, the spirit of the night enough to get me drunk off the energy. I grab another cherry from my drink, sucking the end into my mouth before popping it off, and swallowing it.
“Alright, we have one, untied cherry stem before us.” I hold out the stem for the camera to see. “Now watch as I tie it with no hands.” I stick out my tongue, placing it in the middle before closing my mouth.
I rest my elbows on the table, working my tongue around the stem, forcing it into submission to do exactly what I want.
Within 15 seconds, I pull it through my teeth, and hold up a tied cherry stem.
“Ta-da! Magic.” I place it on the table as they clap, smiles wide and goofy from their own alcoholic concoctions.
“She’s single people. And there’s a line forming so shoot your shot.” JJ is the one to speak to the camera, and I giggle, taking another sip.
Penelope brings her phone down, and within a minute my phone buzzes again, this time with the notification of the video being posted.
There are worse things to be posted on the internet about me.
“I never knew you could do that, y/n/n.” Pen says, taking a sip from her drink.
I run a hand through my hair, shrugging. “Didn’t think I needed to put it on my resume. It’s mostly a party trick I use when I like someone. I haven’t used it in years though.”
The unspoken question lingers on the air.
“No, I never showed Spencer. But I’m sure it’d blow his mind. The way that man applies math and logic to everything he does just solidifies the fact that I know he wouldn’t be able to do it.”
It’s been a while since I’ve joked about him openly, but it wasn’t forced. It didn’t hurt.
It was just a natural statement.
“Have you guys noticed that something’s up with him? He seems distant lately.” JJ says, leaning in closer so she doesn’t have to talk over the crowd.
“Okay, so it’s not just me.” I reply, playing with the straw in my drink.
“It’s gotta be something at home. I mean, he doesn’t even remotely act the way that he did when him and Heather first got together.” Emily's eyes look me up and down, reading my body language, but I’m done hiding.
I let the building anger ripple through me.
“He seems...sad. And not like, normal Reid sad where it has to do with his mom or something, no this is like..” she stops herself from continuing the sentence.
I finish it for her. “It’s like, me, sad.”
JJ sighs. “I hate to say it, but do you think it has anything to do with Heather?”
A glass shatters across the room, and like the red sea, the crowd parts.
Everything happens in no more than a couple seconds, but it feels like a lifetime.
Through the empty space, I see two people standing at the bar. The woman has her hands wound into the man's shirt, her body turned as she laughs at someone behind her, I’m assuming the one who dropped the glass.
The man has his hands gripped on her hips, smiling into her hair, before she turns back around, connecting their lips in the most disgusting kiss I have had the displeasure of witnessing.
The rage builds swiftly in my stomach and it pulses from my soul outward. The world’s tint changes and I see red.
“Even if it doesn’t right now, it will.”
When the hell did I stand up?
They stand with me, and I’m about to argue my point when Emily speaks. “You want something to record, Garcia?” She moves by me, fixing my hair, handing me her glass which holds a swig of her drink left. “Record this.”
I take it, downing it for a little liquid luck, and start for the bar, the three of them on my heels.
I profile him as best I can in the 20 seconds it takes to get through the now reforming crowd.
There’s a gold ring on his hand. His pants and shirt are dirty, and his boots are thick. He works in something having to do with construction, which means he’s probably done around 5 every night, and I know for a fact that it is way past that.
I walk up to them, grabbing her shoulder and pulling them apart, stepping in between them, getting face to face to him.
“Before you even think about laying a hand on me, my name is SSA Y/L/N of the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the F.B.I. From the look of your clothes and the ring on your finger, I’m gonna go ahead and assume that your wife is waiting for you at home.”
His hand instinctively falls to his back pocket.
“And since you just reached for what I’m assuming is your phone, she’s called you multiple times tonight. She knows. Now, fuck off and maybe you can salvage things with her, but believe me when I say this,” His breath smells sour. “You aren’t even half the man that she’s married to.”
He opens his mouth to say something, looking from me, to Heather, to the three women surrounding her, keeping her from leaving, and the camera pointed directly at his face.
He looks back down to me, and huffs, stepping back and walking in the other direction.
For a moment, I stare at where he stood.
And then a fire ignites in my stomach and it takes everything in me to not beat the girl standing behind me.
I turn, and lightning strikes behind her eyes.
“You’re not gonna tell him.”
“Like hell I’m not!” I take a step forward, and she takes one back, bumping into Emily who has her arms crossed, and her shoulders raised. “You know, I tried so hard to give you the benefit of the doubt, Heather. You made him happy and I honestly thought you loved him, but I realize now that he deserves someone so much better than you.”
“Oh what, someone like you?” She’s snide, her demeanor defensive and cocky at the same time. She thinks she’s gonna come out on top of this.
“You know what? Yes. Someone like me. Someone who wouldn’t even think about doing this to him, because the amount of pain that he is about to go through doesn’t even come close to the stupid fucking reward. Oh, so you slept with some douchebag because what? You’re not getting enough attention?” The words are cathartic, leaving my belly with the venom that has been brewing there for the past 2 and half years.
“I found your letter. I was right about you.”
That would have stopped me in my tracks 6 months ago. Now I don’t even flinch.
“Oh honey, it’s not a fucking secret anymore. You want to hear me say it? I love him. I am in love with Spencer fucking Reid, and the only reason that he is with you, is because I was a decent human being and could see that you made him happy, so I kept my mouth shut. But I don’t care anymore. I don’t give a flying fuck what happens now, because whatever it is, it has to be better than being with a lying, cheating bitch like you.”
“You think he’s gonna run to you? Is that what you’re hoping for? He’s not gonna believe you. And even if he did, I’d turn on the water works and make him believe it was just this one time.”
She doesn’t know she’s being filmed.
I turn to the bartender. “Excuse me, is she a regular here?”
The bartender smirks, wiping down the wood. “Yep. She comes in at least a couple times a week with that dude you kicked to the curb. They almost always leave together.”
Heather scoffs, crossing her arms. “Again, he’ll never believe you.”
“You sure about that hot stuff?” Penelope steps forward, shoving the camera in her face. “Smile for the camera.”
Heather's eyes go wide, before turning to me. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“I would do it for a fucking corn chip.”
I place my hands on my hips, getting so close to her our noses almost touch. My voice is dangerously low when I speak. “Either you tell him everything or I will. And trust me. I have my ways of finding out if you did.”
I step back, wishing the daggers in my eyes could inflict actual pain, as I turn to walk away.
I hear her shout in frustration before I feel her hands on my back, pushing me forward into the mass of people.
A couple people unaware of the confrontation help me back up with a smile, thinking I’ve just drunkenly tripped over myself.
Emily and JJ each hold one of my arms, making sure I’m stable, while Penelope keeps filming a look of shock on her face.
A wicked smile forms on my face.
I was hoping she’d do something like that.
I turn and my fist connects with her face, a nice cracking noise satisfying the lust building in my chest, as a thin coat of blood covers my knuckles.
Though, it’s not my blood.
She’s holding her nose in pain as she falls to the floor, taking down a bar stool with her, and I swear I see the bartender laugh.
I grab a napkin off the bar, wiping my knuckles before throwing it on the floor by her feet.
“C’mon girls. The night is still young.”
I see them cover their own smiles with their hands, and Penelope starts to giggle the shock away.
I know I should feel bad. It was unprofessional of me.
But she shoved me first.
It is, legally, self-defense.
Is it sick that I wish she would have punched me?
It doesn’t matter anyway. I know she won’t press charges. She’s smart enough to know she just dug her grave.
And now she has to lie in it.

The atmosphere is different when I walk into the office the next morning.
It’s tense.
And one look from JJ and an inhale of air tells me why.
Spencer’s here.
I barely have time to set my bag down on my desk, before he grabs me suddenly by the arm, dragging me into a nearby conference room.
The anger is rolling off of him in waves, and I can see by the way he clenches and unclenches his fists, he is pissed.
He almost throws me into the room, slamming the door behind him.
“You want to tell me why the fuck you punched Heather in the face for no damn reason?”
Stupid, stupid girl.
Did she not think, that the way I would find out, would be from Spencer himself?
I can’t help but shake my head and laugh. “She didn’t tell you.”
“She told me that she was having a drink with a girlfriend of hers when you came up drunk, yelling at her, until you just punched her. Can you explain that to me?”
He’s finally yelling at me. After months of begging for him to yell at me, he finally is.
It doesn’t feel as good as I had hoped it would.
I don’t say anything, just pull out my phone to find the video that Garcia sent me.
“Are you serious right now, Y/N? Put your fucking phone down and explain to me why you broke my wife's nose!”
I sit in a chair, setting the phone on the table and sliding it towards him. I lean back and cross my hands over my stomach.
“Watch the video, Spencer.”
“Why? Why should I listen to anything you tell me?”
I lean forward, onto my elbow, annunciating every syllable. “Watch the damn video.”
He stands, and I watch as he fights with himself, before huffing in defeat, sitting in a chair and pulling my phone towards him.
He presses play.
I watch as his anger flows away with each passing second, despair taking its place.
This is what I wasn’t looking forward to. Seeing him see it for the first time.
Watching him break.
It wasn’t pretty.
I watch as tears form in his eyes and silently drop down his cheeks.
He clenches his jaw as he watches her shove me, and the punch that followed.
The room is dead quite when the video ends.
I’m the one who speaks first, my voice soft.
“I punched her, because she had the audacity to do this. She had the audacity to hurt you, and flaunt that fact publicly.”
I swallow, taking a breath before speaking.
“I meant everything I said in that video, Spence.”
He looks up at the nickname, his anger no longer directed at me.
“She hurt you, and I saw red. I didn’t think about what I was doing, and frankly, I’m glad I didn’t. I don’t regret standing up for you. I never have, and I never will.” I clasp my hands together, forcing myself to continue.
“I love you Spencer. I don’t think that’s ever going to change. I’m going to have to live with you finding other people and falling in love, and I promise you, I will support you in that. But not with her. Not after that. You deserve so much better than a girl who thinks she can get away with this just because she’s pretty and jealous.”
He taps a couple things on my phone, before turning the screen off and sliding it back over to me.
He stands.
I don’t. I continue talking as he walks over to me.
“You mean everything to me, Spence. If I know you’re happy, truly happy, then I’m satisfied. I will defend you until the end of the universe comes. You are my best friend, and I love you. And I’m sorry I was never upfront about it before, but I am now.”
I look up at him as he stands in front of me. “I’m done hiding from you.”
He’s still for a moment.
He reaches down and grabs my hands, pulling me up before he wraps his arms around my waist and buries himself into my neck.
I pause, but only for a moment, before wrapping my arms around him and holding him tight against me.
I can feel the wet spots on my neck as he cries, and his hands wind themselves into the fabric of my shirt.
When was the last time he was held like this?
I don’t count the time until he loosens his grip, stepping back from me and wiping his face.
I would hold him until the end of time if he let me.
“Thank you.” He whispers, before moving towards the door.
He opens it and walks out, and I grab my phone, running after him.
I stop in the doorway.
“Hey!”
He stops and turns, and the rest of the team is watching over their files.
My heart is pounding, and I feel out of breath.
“I don’t have a choice,” I let him remember. “But I still choose you.”
A small smile flutters across his face, before he turns and walks away.
I look down at my phone.

"I can't believe you brought me here." Millie sighed, shaking her head slightly but grabbing a ball anyway. "I can't play, you know it!"
"You mentioned not being good at golf, and at football, but you never said anything about bowling." I argued, trying not to smile too much.
"I mentioned sports in general!" she let out a bit louder. "I suck at all of them."
This time, I couldn't help my lips from curling big. It was finally friday and also the fifth day Millie and I were spending together. It was insane how fast time seemed to pass when we were together but I liked it. I also liked the fact that she was ready to follow me in my stupid ideas, and I was happy to follow her in her crazy ones. I had had many friendships in my life but nothing ever felt like this one. I was trying new things, learning things too, and even discovering things about myself that I don't think I would have found out without Millie's help. I knew it wouldn't always be entertaining the way this week had been but it could definitely be enriching forever.
"You can do it! I believe in you!" I let out, half-joking.
She raised her nose up and grimaced before shaking her head. "Don't be money on me, you'll quickly become poor."
I chuckled and she turned around, grabbing the ball and throwing it in the alley. It rolled around and quickly reached the gutter, making me press my lips together as I tried not to laugh. Okay, maybe she really sucked at it.
"Okay, this is confirmed." Millie let out as she walked up to me. "Bowling is still a sport. I suck at it."
I laughed and finally got up, waking up to her and grabbing a ball too. I was not the best at bowling but I was not so bad either, and I grabbed her arm on my way, bringing her with me. I handed her the ball and she frowned for half a second before grabbing it and I turned her around, placing her hands on the ball. She allowed me to move her fingers, staring at what I was doing and licking her lips. It made me smile more and I kept my hand over hers.
"Okay fist off, you need to relax a bit. You're way too tensed. You need to stay relaxed when you give the swing." I explained slowly, waiting a few seconds. "God, Mill, relax!"
She sighed but I finally felt her relax against me as I pressed my body slightly more against hers.
"Now you need to line up and not just throw the ball and hope it'll find the right way."
Millie's shoulders fell and she turned to me, frowning at me. It made me chuckle again and she raised her eyebrows.
"Do you think I'm stupid?"
"No," I argued. "I think you expect to be bad at it so you put zero effort in it."
This time, her traits softened and she licked her lips again without answering my comment. "Okay, and what else?"
"Your swing needs to be relaxed, but when you finally throw the ball, you need to some power. Aim for the middle. Oh, and twist your wrist on the left. Not too much, just enough, okay?"
"This is too much information at the same time."
"Come on, Mill. You can do it."
I took a few steps back but kept my eyes on her as she breathed in and out before finally throwing the ball. Instead to get in the gutter, it rolled in the alley and hit two pins that feel down. Millie turned around swiftly, her brown hair moving around her body, and threw her arms in the air, letting her head fall back slightly.
"Yes! I'm the bowling queen!"
I crossed my arms on my chest and started laughing at her reaction. Some people turned around to look at us and I rolled my eyes, a smile still spread on my lips.
"Yea yea, I'm still gonna win."
We kept playing for a while and even if I won all the games, she was getting better and better and for some reason, it made me proud of her. We walked back to my car and as I was driving home, I saw her took her shoes off and bring her feet on the seat, wrapping her arms around her knees.
"Maybe someday, we can go try playing golf together." she explained, making me raise my eyebrows in surprised before I glanced at her. "If you're ready to teach me, of course."
"Yea! Yea of course!"
She sent me a bigger smile and leaned her cheek on her knees, still looking at me. "Cool, you're a good teacher, and I actually had fun."
"That was the goal."
As soon as we walked back in the apartment, she walked to the kitchen and I rushed to my room, grabbing a pack of cards and joining her as she put two beers on the table along with a bottle of vodka. We sat in front of each other and I started dealing the cards.
It was a ritual we had with Louis on every friday night but even if we hadn't talked about it together, neither of us had expected Louis to be there. He was barely at the apartment anyway these days and the fact that Millie still had feelings for him made me think it was actually better that way. We both knew he was spending all his time at his girlfriend's but we didn't mention it. In fact, we hadn't talked about Louis, Grace or Summer at all on that day either and I was fine with it. We could spend time filling the lists and all of that during the weekend... or never.
Millie pushed her empty beer away and filled our shot glasses with vodka. We swallowed it at the same time and I saw her eyes water.
"Don't drink too much." I pointed out, my lips curling on the right. "We're having a party tomorrow night, and also you won't be able to see your cards."
Millie laughed louder than expected and she shrugged a shoulder. "I probably won't get drunk tomorrow, to make sure everyone's safe."
"That's very mature of you." I replied with a small smile. "Now show me what you got."
Her eyes met mine and her lips curled into a cheeky smile. "Are you ready to lose?"
Just as I was about to answer, we heard the front door open and we both jumped slightly, not expecting it. Louis frowned when he entered the kitchen and after a few seconds, his face changed. Maybe I should have felt guilty for doing something with Millie that he was normally a part of, but I didn't.
"Shit, it's friday already?" he asked, placing his hands on the table and leaning closer. "Why didn't you guys remind me?"
"We just thought you were busy." Millie mentioned, shrugging a shoulder and looking at the cards in her hands.
"Maybe I could invite El?" he asked, ignoring her innuendo. "She could play with us."
"No, she can not." my best friend quickly replied before I could say anything.
"Fuck off Millie, why are you acting like that?"
I kicked my friend under the table and cleared my throat to catch Louis' attention but his eyes never left Millie who wouldn't even blink.
"What Millie means is that it's a thing we had only the three of us, you know?" I tried to explain calmly. "It's our thing, and adding someone would just not work."
It took over a minute for Louis to finally move his body back, his hands sliding on the table before they fell on each side of him. I could feel anger emanating of him and I didn't really understand what made him so mad. After all, he was the one who was never here, he was the one who literally dropped us for his girlfriend, and he was the one who broke Millie's heart. If anything, we should be the angry ones.
"Well apparently, you guys don't need me anymore."
I was expecting him to storm off but it's Millie who got up quickly, her chair making an annoying noise as it rubbed against the floor.
"You're the one who doesn't need us anymore, Louis!" she pointed out, making my heart jump in my chest. "So you know what? You fuck off!"
Quickly, Millie threw her cards on the table and grabbed the bottle of vodka, rushing out of the kitchen. i jumped again when she closed the door of her room roughly and slowly got up, shaking my head and leaning myself with my hands on the table.
"Did you really propose to bring your girlfriend here? Are you stupid of what?"
i was talking low but I knew he totally heard how pissed I was with the tone of my voice.
"Shut up, Niall!" Louis quickly replied, his voice louder than mine. He searched for something in his pocket and shook it between his fingers. I frowned slightly until I realized it was Millie's list and my lips parted.
"You didn't have the right to read this." I pointed out, my heart skipping a beat.
"Oh yea? Well Millie forgot it in the living room!"
It was definitely an accident and somehow, I thought it could have just slipped out of her pocket when we were watching tv. She probably didn't know it was there and even if she did, she probably thought Louis wouldn't come back for a while and that it was safe. I knew it was wrong of me to blame him for checking a random paper but I was mad anyway.
"That is none of your business!" I let out, trying to snatch the paper out of his hand.
He pulled away just in time and I breathed in, trying to remain calm. "This is my fucking business! My name is all over it!" he argued.
"That doesn't make it your business!"
I was getting even angrier and at the same time, I just wanted to leave and join Millie. It was her I should be with instead to be arguing with Louis, which was most likely useless anyway.
"Oh but it's your business, right? Because you think I was not good enough for her! You think she deserves better than me!"
In a rough movement, Louis threw the list on the table and I quickly grabbed it tight as I remembered what I had written on it.
"She does! She fucking does, okay!" I almost yelled. "You didn't treat her the way she deserves! She deserves better!"
"And who's better, Horan? Uh? Who's better for her? You?"
The way he said the last word was like a slap in the face and without thinking, I moved my upper body back, still staring at him. I didn't want to pick sides at first but now I had done it without even thinking about it. I looked at my best friend and felt my heart drop in my chest. We were both fighting for no good reason and I hated it. I licked my lips and breathed in deeply before sighing.
"Look, I'm not gonna fight with you, okay?" I let out in a softer tone. "You and Millie... you went through something, and she needs time. Which works because you're busy too. I just want to be there for her, okay? Don't take it so personal."
"How can I not?" Louis pointed out, still a bit mad. "This is my name! This is me you're talking about!"
I sighed again and shook my head. "Just.. go find your girlfriend, okay? I'll see you at the party tomorrow."
Louis' eyes moved up and down on me and finally sighed too. "Yea, it's better I leave for now."
Without an other word, he walked to his room probably to grab a few things and I waited until I heard the front door close again. I walked to my room to get changed and turned all the lights off before walking to until Millie's door, knocking gently on it.
"Mill, can I come in?"
It took a few seconds and I heard the door unlock before it opened. Millie stood in front of me, staring in my eyes, and I noticed she got changed too. We stared at each other for a while and I raised my eyebrows, making her sigh but move away to let me in.
We ended up laying in her bed, under the covers, facing each other, and I kept silent for a while. Her eyes seemed to shine with the lights coming from her window and I realized she had been tearing up, maybe she even shed a few tears.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm.. I'm at that point where my heart aches because I love him but I know he's not meant for me. I know I was not happy with him. I know that what we had was not what a love relationship should be. And... realizing that hurts, too."
I let my eyes room on her face and it made me think about Grace. Perhaps I was exactly at that same place when it came to my ex girlfriend and although it did hurt, I was slowly getting used to it. Maybe I should give Summer a chance, after all? It was not good to stick or hang on to something like the relationship I had with Grace, or the one Millie had with Louis. We should both seek something better and I knew it. Happiness was possible, it just needed a bigger effort.
"That's a first step in the right direction." I explained in a whisper. "You're doing great, I'm super proud of you."
Millie's lips curled in a grateful smile and she pressed her lips together.
"Thank you. I'm proud of you too."" she murmured back. "You're gonna sleep here with me?"
"If you want me to." I proposed with a shrug as she nodded quickly. "Then I will."
She reached for the lamp near her bed and turned the light off before laying back down in bed. I started thinking about Summer and how I never really gave her a chance. I didn't love her but I really liked her. She was a pretty and sweet girl and I had no idea why I was rejecting her over and over again. I knew I needed time to make a choice but the more I was thinking about it, the more I knew my choice wouldn't be Grace.
"Niall?"
"Mm?"
"You're never gonna leave, right?" she breathed out, taking me out of my thoughts.
"Where do you want me to go?"
"You know what I mean." she whispered again, making my eyes flutter open. I kept blinking a few times until I could see her shadow in the dark. "I lost Louis, I don't want to lose you, too."
I reached for her hand on the mattress and squeezed her fingers as tight as I could. "I'm never gonna leave, I promise. I'll always be there for you."

So erm. Hi guys, first time sharing something on Tumblr, normally I’m the one reading all the fanfics but after reading so many talented people’s work I thought I’d try my hand at it :) hopefully it doesn’t completely suck, any writing tips and feedback is welcome and feel free to give some constructive criticism. It’s the same routine day after day, wake up, shower, get dressed and go out to recruit for Damien. The streets of Brooklyn aren’t exactly safe for a girl of 13, but hey this is what happens when a pair of inconsiderate asses sell their only child to one of the most infamous and dangerous gang of criminals for the cheap thrill of getting high. One way or another a girls gotta make a living and the way I do it could land me in jail for the rest of my life, I mean I didn’t exactly picture myself blackmailing and manipulating the poor souls targeted by Црни лабуд, but that’s the shit that happens when you find yourself being shunned by the society that’s supposed to help the weak.
Anyways I was getting close to my target, just two more blocks, through the back alley and up the stairs to the apartment owned by Greg Sampson. That clever son of a gun managed to bypass the security systems of the cities bank and make off with $5,000 and get away with it, and as expected the Црни лабуд want him to be our new “financial adviser” considering our last one double crossed the boss and died cause if it. Turning to corner to enter the alley was a moment, as cheesy as it sounds, I won’t ever forget, a big group of boys were surrounding a lanky and frail lad who by the looks of it had seen better days. His blonde hair was all over the shop and his face looked like it had been ploughed into the front of a bus, blood was coming out his nose and both his top and bottom lip were split open but despite all of that he was laughing and taunting the group.
“What’s the matter guys? Upset that you can’t keep me down?”, okay it’s official this kid has a death wish and I’m pretty sure that if I don’t do something I’m gonna be a witness to a murder, so of course my dumbass walks right into the middle of this “fight”. “So, what the hell is going off here? You boys decided to compensate for your small penises by acting like giant dicks or something?”, I could hear the lad behind me let out a laugh and a small smirk spread across my face as I looked at who I was up against, all the lads were red in the face and looked ready to put me into an early grave but I’d of liked to see them try.
Thanks to the boss I knew basic self-defence and apparently could pack one “hell of a punch” when pissed off, the tallest of the bunch stepped towards me and picked me up by my collar at an attempt to scare me “Who the hell do ya think ya are little girl?! Don’t ya know when to stay outta other people business? Now I gotta mess up that pretty lil face of yours”. It was safe to say whatever he said and did was about as intimidating as a wet kitten and honestly quite funny, hence why I laughed before I punched the prick in his face, not my smartest move cause then I was dropped straight on to my ass. One of the tall pricks mates decided to take advantage of my situation, yelling and cursing at me as he prepared to kick me right in the face ,which wouldn’t of been too pleasant let’s be honest, but right when his foot was about to make contact the blonde lad behind me pulled himself in front of me and took the blow for me, he went flying across the floor and hit the back wall.
Now I was pissed. As the group started to walk past me and advance on the blonde boy, I grabbed the ankle of the closest guy and pulled him down, climbing on top of him and really going in on his stupid face to try and get their attention back on me and off the guy struggling to stand. It’s safe to say it worked, a sudden force to my ribs knocked me off the boy and back onto the floor, and then the fun began…for them at least I wasn’t having as much fun as the collection of shitheads, pain erupted from all over body, one jackass was constant kicking me in the head as the others hit whatever part of me they could reach. It felt like it went on for forever, but, in reality it was only for 30 seconds, before the boys stopped, I could hear the sounds of punches and the whimpers of pain as multiple sets of steps started to run away from me.
I tried to sit up, but those bastards really did a number on my ribs and midsection, the pain making me cry out before crumpling to the floor, faint mummers and a moan of pain could be heard but I didn’t really care about that. Summoning my last bit of strength I pulled myself up, ignoring my bodies screams of protest, the wall becoming my new best friend as I started to limp towards my objective, I managed to get about 10 centimetres away from the alley before a arm wrapped around my waist and held me up.
“Just so you know that was fucking stupid move on your part, next time let me save the punk” ,okay hold the frigging phone who the hell is this and why haven’t I pushed his stupid ass to the floor? quickly I shoved him and “walked” away from him, royally pissed off. “By the time you’d of got here to save him he’d of been 6 feet under by now, so go screw yourself” Perhaps I could have been nicer, but he did start it.
Miraculously I made it to the stairs and began to make my way up them, when once again a hand stopped me and I gotta be honest it’s really starting to piss me off, turning around to give this little bugger a piece of my mind, the words died in my throat as I came face to face with the blonde boy. Bruises littered his face and somehow his face was even bloodier then before, the mark from the kick was printed on his face and guilt immediately flooded my veins, “Ignore my friend, he doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut sometimes, anyway I wanted to thank you for stepping in there not a lotta people would be so quick to rush in and have my back. My names Steve, Steve Rodgers and the grumpy old man over there is James Barnes” Steve stuck his hand out as a greeting and offered me what I can assume he meant as a friendly smile, though the split lips did ruin the image. Slowly a smile spread across my face and I shook his hand in greeting, “It was no problem, honestly, besides you had em on the ropes, my names y/n and it’s nice to meet you, though I can’t say the same about your friend over there.”. The boy behind Steve or Bucky scoffed at me and walked off in a huff, not that I cared, simply raising my eyebrows at Steve, mocking his friends attitude he let out a sigh and gave me an apologetic smile in response, “Well I better go after him or he’ll kick up a storm, I’ll see ya around y/n” and with that he smiled a final time and ran off after his friend.
Returning to the task at hand, I let out a small smile at the thought of Steve before frowning, he was a good kid and didn’t need the trouble I brought, it’ll be best if I never see him again. I sighed before climbing up the rest of the stairs and prepared for the next few hours of hell I have to bring to this man, with those final thoughts I brought out my “tools” and got to work.
Okay honestly, I didn’t mean to make the first chapter so long, I wanted to provide the best in sight as to how this series will go, also the character development will be miles better in up-coming chapters. Thanks for reading :)

Hey friends!

“Mate, are you just getting in?” Dingo said groggily, sitting up on his elbows to squint at Luka.
“I spent most of the night in the lounge,” Luka told him, sliding his guitar off his shoulder and propping it in the stand. “I was working on a song.”
Dingo huffed and fell back in the bed, throwing an arm over his eyes. “‘Course you were,” he muttered. He peeked out from under his arm as Luka grabbed his things and headed for the bathroom. “Aren’t you going to sleep?”
“I did sleep,” Luka admitted. “Passed out in the chair and just woke up when the staff came in to set up the refreshments. I’m just gonna shower and head back, I’m sure Marinette will be up soon. It’s already after 11 am, Ding.”
Dingo snorted, his arm still over his face. “The premiere’s tonight. Like hell I’m getting up. Some of us need more than two hours of sleep a night.”
“Liar,” Luka said, just before he shut the bathroom door. “You exist on Red Bull and raising hell.”
“Guilty,” he heard Dingo chuckle.
Luka sighed as he put his things down and drew back the shower curtain. It wasn’t like he hadn’t wanted to sleep last night, but there was no way in hell it was going to happen after his little outing with Marinette. Going to sleep in that mindset would have been a disaster, especially sharing the room with Dingo. Luka was a gentleman, but his subconscious was not .
He turned the shower and pulled off his shirt. Luka glanced down at himself, and then turned to face the fancy oval mirror hanging above the bathroom counter. Under the bright white lights of the vanity, he could see that Marinette’s mark on him had darkened, almost—maybe to what it had been when she first put it on him.
He shouldn't be happy about that, he told himself, considering the reason, but he was still grinning when he stepped into the shower. It wasn’t only the hot water that melted the tension from his shoulders as he stood under the spray. It would probably fade again when she wasn’t here with him, caught back up in the rush of her life, but he was happy—he was glad that he could support her .
Luka sighed. He’d always sucked at lying to himself. He was happy to matter to her, and that was the truth. Not that he’d ever stopped being important, he knew that, but…important in a distant, far off way. It was nice to be important face to face.
Luka put his head under the spray and let the water blast him in the face. This just wasn’t a good time to be trying to untangle all his complicated feelings. After she was gone, and he had some distance, he could think about it again. Right now, it was all about being here for her, like he promised.
Clean and freshly dressed, Luka picked up his guitar again and made his way back to the VIP lounge set aside for Jagged and his entourage. There was a fresh array of breads and fruits laid out on the table, none of which would be half as good as what they got in Paris. He grabbed a croissant and a bottle of water anyway, and wolfed it down before settling down in the same obnoxiously short armchair that he’d spent the night in.
He played absently, not the warm, heavy melody that had haunted him the night before, full of all the things he was trying not to think about, but the familiar clear song that never quite left him. It was a story, that song, and he wasn’t quite sure how it ended yet, nor whether that warmth he’d been playing last night had a place in it...but maybe he could make it fit...
He was so lost in it that he didn’t notice Marinette until she touched his knee and said, “Good morning.”
Luka looked up, and nearly laughed. She looked fine, normal; she wasn’t wearing any makeup, so her eyes and nose still showed the signs of all the crying she’d been doing, but she was clean and fresh, still flushed from the shower, and her hair was neatly tied back in a loose ponytail. She also looked...considerably looser and more relaxed than she had all week. Good for you, he thought with mild amusement, but all he said was, “Good morning.”.
“Stop that,” Marinette muttered, folding her arms self-consciously.
“Stop what?” Luka asked, his eyes flicking to the blue lines on her shoulder, peeking out of the wide collar of her shirt before he forced them back to her eyes. “Coffee?” he suggested mildly, getting up from his chair.
“Stop looking at me like that,” she accused, dropping into his chair despite the identical one that stood next to it.
“Like what?” Luka coughed, trying to hide how close he was to laughter as he went to the oversized, overcomplicated coffee machine that Jagged insisted on having in every hotel.
“Like everything you said when you dropped me off last night was a lie,” she pouted, and Luka couldn’t help a chuckle through his nose as he remembered dropping her off the night before.
Luka stopped at her door, and declined to come in. “I’ll let you have your privacy,” he told her, and laughed when Marinette flushed and covered her face, then remembered the bag in her hand and tried to hide it again. She’d been bolder than he expected while they were shopping, asking questions and examining options with a thoroughness he found both incredibly amusing and very Marinette, but as they’d headed back home, and she didn’t have anything else to think about to distract her from exactly what she was carrying, she began to be flustered and nervous. “Marinette,” Luka chuckled, “It’s okay.”
“It’s not okay,” Marinette mumbled, fumbling out her key card and opening the door, stepping inside so she could drop the bag out of sight. “You’ll know.”
“Hey,” Luka said, touching her arm gently, though he made no move to follow her into the room. “You know there’s no pressure here. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. If you’re not feeling it tonight, that’s totally cool.” He grinned, and leaned against her doorframe. “And I won’t really know, will I? You could go in there, chuck the bag in your suitcase, and go to sleep. Or...you could not do that, and I don’t ever have to know which option you went with.” Marinette’s shoulders came down a little bit, and she stopped chewing her lip, though she still looked a little nervous. Luka felt his smile soften, and he leaned down to kiss her forehead gently. “Have a good night, Marinette. Relax, whatever that means to you.” He winked at her as he leaned in, grabbed the handle of her door, and left, pulling the door shut behind him.
Okay, yeah, it was kind of a lie, but that was hardly his fault when she came in looking like the weight of the world had fallen off her shoulders overnight. On top of the physical release it probably felt good to take back some control of her situation. Reclaim her body for herself.
Luka abruptly realized he needed to stop thinking about that. Fortunately the coffee machine beeped, and he quickly grabbed his coffee and hers and went back to her.
She gave him a flat look and the corner of his mouth twitched. “You just look really relaxed, that’s all. I’m happy for you.” He offered her the cup of coffee, and she glared at him like she wanted to snatch the coffee cup out of his hand. Luka raised an eyebrow, and she grudgingly took the hot cup, filled with even hotter liquid, carefully.
Luka chuckled as he sat down in the chair next to the one she had stolen, and set his coffee on the tiny artistic table between them. He pulled his guitar into his lap and began to play again.
“Is that the same one as the other night?” Marinette asked after a few moments, curling up in the chair and tucking her feet under her. “I really like it. Is it for the album?”
Luka shook his head, not looking at her. “No. It’s just...something I like to play with from time to time. I doubt I’ll ever actually write the whole thing. It’s...personal, this one. It’s not for the whole world.”
Marinette’s lip slid out in a slight pout. “I like it though,” she said, looking down into her cup. “It...it sounds familiar.”
“I used to play it a lot, back on the boat. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on it. I’ll still play it for you any time you ask,” Luka murmured, smiling to himself. He glanced up at Marinette, and she smiled at him. “How are you feeling about the premiere tonight?” he asked.
Marinette hesitated, and bit her lip. “I...I want to, but…”
“I think it would be good for you,” Luka told her, still playing softly. “I know you worry about the press and Adrien’s image, but—” he hesitated, trying to decide if he was being honest or cruel. “Sweetheart, that’s not your job anymore,” he finished as gently as he could.
“But they’ll say things,” Marinette whispered, looking down. “About you and me. About why I came here and why I was with you and—people will think—” She broke off as Luka snorted.
“I don’t care what people think,” he told her. “If you’re worried for your sake, then I’ll drop it and never say another word. Don’t do it for me, though.” He grinned. “I’m not some pretty boy model who needs a clean image, I’m a fucking rock star.” Or, well, trying to be, anyway. “If you ask Jagged he’ll complain the rags don’t have enough dirt on me.” Marinette’s mouth quirked and she looked down. “I’m happy to be your public rebound,” Luka teased, setting aside the guitar. “Hell, I’ll kiss you on camera if you really want to piss Adrien off. We can totally make up some wild, passionate fling where you used me for my body and then I’ll write a song about how you broke my heart to bits and it’ll rocket up the charts.”
Marinette frowned, flushing. “That’s not funny, Luka.”
Luka winced. “Yeah, sorry. I...didn’t mean it that way. I wasn’t thinking.”
Marinette’s shoulders curled in. “I am sorry. About last night. That was...really unfair of me, and I see that now. I shouldn’t have made assumptions about your feelings, and I shouldn’t have tried to use you like that.”
Luka reached over the space between them, tugging her arm lightly until she gave him her hand. “Forgiven. I’m glad you feel safe with me.”
Marinette smiled. “Well. I was safe with you, wasn’t I? You’ve given me room to lose my mind all week, and you didn’t let me do anything irredeemably stupid, even when I threw myself at you.”
Luka felt a little twinge of conscience at that. He’d thought about it, in all honesty. He’d considered whether it might not be better to have a doomed fling and get her out of his system once and for all. Luka could have been what she needed for one night, maybe even for a couple of nights, made her feel loved and desired and beautiful, and maybe seeing her look at him, letting her touch him and hearing her gasp his name, would have been enough for him. Maybe when it all fell down, it would have been enough closure for him and he could finally move on.
The price was too high, though. Despite the voice in his head that occasionally wondered if it would be better just to burn it all down, Luka couldn’t bring himself to actually do it. For one thing, he’d be taking advantage of her vulnerable state. For another, he was sure Marinette would be as miserable as himself once the haze of her emotions had cleared, and he couldn’t do that to her.
And...he didn’t want her out of his life. Not really. Not as long as she still wanted to be in his. It wasn’t hope , exactly, it was just…
“I love you,” he said simply. “More than being in love with you, I mean. I love you the way I love Juleka and my mom and Dingo. I want you to achieve your dreams, I want all good things for you, and I’m happy to be a part of that, any part of it, and I don’t want my feelings to be in your way. I don’t want them to be in my own way, and stop me from doing for you what I’d do for anyone else I loved. When you hurt, I hurt. I want to be there for you.”
Marinette considered that for a moment, and then leaned over, craning to see the tattoo on the back of his shoulder where it peeked out of his tank top.
“How are you doing?” she asked softly, nodding at it. “With...all that.”
Luka shrugged a little, the hand not holding hers tightening on his guitar. “Better. I can’t sleep with anybody else in the room, but other than that. I’m okay.”
Marinette frowned. “Isn’t that a problem on the bus?”
Luka sighed through his nose. “Depends who’s on it. I’m okay with the band and Penny and Jagged.” He lifted his arm a little, indicating the double ring around his bicep made of his bandmates’ names. “If anyone else has to ride with us, I can’t sleep. Penny makes sure I get it to myself for a couple hours during the day if I start looking ragged, and I never room with anybody but Dingo on stops, so I get by.” He huffed a quiet laugh. “You know the jackass actually apologized for putting his stupid name on my back? He didn’t need to, it wasn’t the same thing, but...I don’t know, I still appreciated it.” He rubbed his thumb over her fingers. “Thanks for asking.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t ask sooner,” Marinette sighed. “I’m a bad friend.”
“You’re in pain,” Luka corrected, squeezing her hand. “You’re in real, immediate pain, and I’m fine, aside from the occasional irrational urge to kick some blond model ass.”
“Oh, you would not,” Marinette huffed. “You like Adrien.”
“I do like Adrien, he’s a nice enough guy, but right now he’s a fucking idiot and I don’t have to forgive him for hurting you.”
Marinette sighed, looking away. “It wasn’t all his fault,” she sighed. “I mean, he ended it, but...I think what really happened was that we were both chasing a dream, and...we didn’t spend enough time making sure it was the same one. I wanted the castle and the prince, and the whole time he was trying desperately to escape the tower. At some point, I became another chain that was holding him there, and…”
“He’s a fucking idiot,” Luka said firmly, and Marinette smiled. “And I don’t have to forgive him. I get to be unfair if I want to. It’s my duty and privilege as your friend. You get to cry on me all week, and I get to be a petty little bitch about Adrien.”
“Luka!” Marinette scolded weakly, laughing.
“So what do you say?” Luka said, grinning. “Will you let me take you to the premiere? I’m dying to see what you brought to wear, I know it’s amazing, and my stylist is dying to get his hands on you. I swear he’ll make you feel like a princess.”
Marinette scrunched her nose. “I’m tired of being a princess,” she sighed, and then she gave him a little smirk that he hadn’t seen on her face in years. “Do you think he could make me look like a rock star instead?”
Luka’s grin nearly split his face. Dingo burst in through the doors before he could answer her. They both shifted away from each other and Marinette automatically pulled her low ponytail over her shoulder to cover Luka’s name. Dingo looked between them, eyebrow raised.
“Morning, Ding,” Luka said as casually as he could, and trying not to mind the ponytail thing. “How do you sleep an extra two hours and still wake up looking like shit?”
Dingo scowled. “Oh, fuck you, mate. You’re just jealous that I actually slept in a bed while you broke your back in one of these tiny-ass chairs all night.”
Marinette’s head whipped over to look at him. “You didn’t.”
Luka shrugged. “Not on purpose, but yeah. I’m fine. I’ll catch a nap this afternoon. You should too, actually, it’ll be a late night.” He looked back at Dingo and grinned. “Meanwhile you slept in a bed and you still look like you just dragged in from the club.”
That got Dingo fired up, as he intended, and their good-natured insult battle cleared the last of the tension of the room. When Luka looked back at Marinette, she was laughing, loud and unrestrained—like the Marinette he remembered, and not the Marinette of carefully measured television smiles and or fake, too-big smiles that only lasted a minute before crumbling. She might not be all right yet, but she was getting there, and he had a part in that, and that felt good.
Her laughter drew Dingo’s fire, and Luka’s elation grew as she rose to the occasion and gave as good as she got. He laughed when Dingo got up in her space and Marinette coolly dipped her fingers in her now-cold coffee and flicked it all over Dingo’s face, spattering his sunglasses.
That was the girl he loved. She looked up at him right that second, grinning proudly, and Luka felt his own smile go dopey and affectionate. She blushed, and looked away, and Luka picked up his guitar again, keeping the focus of his gaze away from her.
No, he absolutely couldn’t regret what they hadn’t done. She had an energy about her, a spark that no one else did, and Luka couldn’t give it up, even if it hurt. A little pain just let you know you were alive, after all. He could live with it, if it meant he got to have Marinette in his life.
He set his fingers to the strings, beginning the familiar melody again. Out of the corner of his eye, Luka saw Dingo look sharply at him, but Luka ignored him. Still smiling, he kept playing.
