tag #3 from @kirythestitchwitch! name of the game is most recently written line from your wip/s.
"Bennett witches!" Katherine laughed and laughed at the way Klaus seethed with impotent rage, securely trapped in his seat at the negotiating table. "Nasty little things when you cross them. Bonnie might not like me much, but she hates you."
pr sure that's the most recent line, but i had to dig thru most of a legal pad for it.

Summary: ‘Arranged marriages are never easy. This one is no exception. Both sides will have to relearn their ways, and learn to trust each other. Bucky has all the love to give, but Katherine doesn’t know how to accept real love. She’s never been loved by anyone other than her best friend. A/N; This is my FIRST Bucky story. As well as my first AU story. If this first part does well, I’ll keep on going. I’m incredibly beyond nervous about this. Constructive criticism welcome, but please be nice. Please re-post and comment :)
I do NOT give permission for my work to be copied and posted on here or any other site, even if you give me credit. PLEASE just reblog if you want to share my story!!
Will happily start a tag list if anyone is interested!
PART 3 NOW POSTED
Tumblr media
“You’ve never been outside of New York?”
Steve’s bewildered question made Katherine shrug her shoulders, as she picked a piece of pepperoni off her pizza, eating it silently.
“Well, if that information is such a shock, I can’t imagine what your reactions will be like..” She ate a piece of sausage this time, “..When I tell you that I can count the number of times I’ve left the city, on one hand.”
Both men’s mouths fell agape, which made her let out a bit of a laugh.
“Are you serious?” Bucky shook his head, not quite believing her.
“Unfortunately.” She nodded her head, confirming it to be true.
Dinner with them had gone really well, and most of her nerves were gone. They had been talking about pretty simple things, just learning about each other. They had essentially been playing 20 questions, and it turned out to be a bit of fun. They now knew each other's favorite colors; Steve’s was blue, Bucky’s was dark green or dark red, and Katherine’s was purple. Both Steve and Bucky enjoyed the outdoors, whereas Katherine had spent most of her life inside.
“Looks like I need to get some miles under your belt.” Bucky said to her, a grin spread across his face.
Katherine’s cheeks tinted a shade of pink, feeling his eyes on her. She definitely felt like there was something between them.. But was it because of the deal, or was it real? She was hesitant to even attempt to explore the idea, barely knowing him. He was very attractive, and seemed really kind. But, she hardly knew him.
“We should go to Alaska again sometime,” Steve said, before finishing his eighth slice of pizza. “Take her out to the cabin for a few days.”
Katherines smile returned, “Alaska? I hear that you can see all of the stars out there, you don’t even need a telescope!”
Both Bucky and Steve let out soft chuckles, “Are you into astronomy?” Bucky asked her, an eyebrow raised.
She nodded her head as she took a sip of her drink, “Oh yes. Quite unfortunate for me though, you can’t see much here in the city.” She shrugged her shoulders, trying to seem not too bothered by that.
Little did she know, Bucky’s mind was already trying to formulate a plan. Even though they weren’t married yet, or even really in a relationship… Yet. Bucky still wanted to take care of her. She was his, and he was hers.
“Did your parents never take you to do things like that?” Steve asked her, and her face fell.
She knew the topic would eventually come up, she had just hoped to avoid it a while longer. Bucky’s eyebrows furrowed on his face, noticing the change in her attitude.
“Uhm,” She cleared her throat, “No.. My mom passed away when I was 13. And dad.. He doesn’t really do much.” She had hoped that would be enough, but judging by the looks on their faces.. More questions would follow.
“Is he still gambling?” Bucky asked her, lowering his voice a bit. Steve let out a soft sigh, looking at the pizza. He was already aware of her mother, he paid for the funeral.
“Yep..” Katherine popped her lips with the word, a crisp ‘P’ sound coming from them.
Bucky shifted in his seat, his once happy tone seeming to have changed. It seemed as if gears were turning in his head.
“Katherine,” he looked to her, reaching his metallic hand a bit closer towards her, “I have a feeling that I’ve been lied to.. And that your situation isn’t what it should be.. Is he not treating you well?”
She shifted her eyes away from him, not daring to meet his icy blue orbs. She never knew the exact details of the deal between her father and Bucky, but she was aware enough to know that Bucky had indeed been lied to. The familiar feeling of anxiety began to itch its way towards the surface, her arms instinctively wrapping around her middle. This was it.. This was the moment Bucky would decide he didn’t want her anymore, because she wasn’t what was promised. She had a memory of hearing her dad on the phone with someone.. ‘No. She didn’t make the grades, she’s not going to college.’ Which had been a complete lie. Katherine’s High School transcript showed straight A’s. She wanted to go to college, she had been accepted to 3 different schools. She remembered her father telling her that she had to get a second job, so they wouldn’t lose the house, and that paying for college would’ve been a waste of time. If only she had realized back then, what was truly going on.
Bucky let out a huff of air, leaning back in his seat, contemplating his next words. She didn’t even have to answer him, for him to know that her life wasn’t great. Steve had told him about the small amount of luggage she had, and Annette told him that it was mostly work clothes. For two different jobs. Needless to say, Bucky was upset.
“Hey, Buck?” Steve’s voice sounded, grabbing the attention of both silent parties, “They’re closing up shop. It’s almost nine o’clock..”
Katherine looked around the restaurant, realizing that Steve was correct. The workers had begun cleaning, and setting chairs on top of tables. Which meant the three of them had been there for nearly 4 hours. She couldn’t remember a time where she was actually able to spend that long just talking, and enjoying some company. The anxiety had started to cloud her eyes, her leg bouncing underneath the table. Just then, her phone started buzzing in her pocket. It was Sage, of course. There wasn’t anyone else who would call her.
“You need to take that?” Bucky’s voice snapped her out of her daze.
“Oh,” she chuckled softly, pulling her phone out, “It’s Sage, my best friend.” She raised her phone, showing him Sages face, “She’s not the most patient person..”
“Go ahead. I’ll take care of the check.” He offered a small, tight lipped smile.
She nodded to him, before getting up to leave the table. She gave both men a small, polite smile, before walking out the door of the restaurant. She was still in perfect view of the men, which is probably the only reason why they didn’t follow her. She chuckled, realizing that Sage was video calling her.
“Before you start yelling at me..”
Sage let out a long, dramatic groan, “Okay fine.”
Katherine chuckled softly, pacing up and down the sidewalk next to the car they were using, “You interrupted dinner actually.”
“It’s almost nine!!”
“We went to a pizza place, and got lost in conversation.” Katherine shrugged, her eyes glancing into the building to see that the two men were still seated, “Since when did I ever just… Talk?”
“Like, to a guy? Never. You suck at flirting.” Sage retorted, chuckling.
Katherine shook her head, “No, not like.. Flirting. Just.. Talking. It was really nice actually..” She gently kicked the concrete with the top of her shoe, “We laughed, smiled, had a great evening..”
“But?”
She let out a sigh, “But then we got onto the topic of my father, and now my anxiety is all over the place. I guess you might’ve saved me.”
Sage was silent for a moment. She knew that the conversation was probably very uncomfortable for Katherine.
“Well.. what did he say?”
Katherine hummed softly, “He asked if I was treated well.. Then you called. So, thanks for saving me from that explanation.” She let out a breathless chuckle, not realizing that the men were heading outside.
“He needs to know.” Sage said, shrugging her shoulders.
“He will.. I just.. Don’t think it’s best for the first day.”
Sage let out a breath, “When do you think I might get to meet your future beloved?”
Katherine let out a laugh, before realizing Steve and Bucky were walking towards her. She unconsciously began to chew her lower lip, a tint of pink spreading on her cheeks. “Uhm…”
Bucky raised an eyebrow, a small on his lips as he walked towards her. He glanced at her phone, sliding his hands into his pants pockets. “Is this her?” He asked softly, Katherine nodding in response.
Sage heard the voice, both of her eyebrows quirking upwards. “Is that him??”
Katherine rolled her eyes at the two, deciding to just move the phone to where Sage could see Bucky as well. He raised a hand to wave at her, a cute grin on his face.
“Hiya.”
Sage nodded her head, “Hi yourself, Mr. Barnes.”
Bucky looked to Katherine, wondering what they had been talking about, but he knew it wasn’t his place to push it.
“I was asking Katie when she thinks I might get to meet you. I’d like to know the man who will be taking care of my best friend.. You will be taking care of her, right?”
Katherine’s eyes were daggers, staring at Sage through the phone.
Bucky let out a soft chuckle, the sound sending a chill through her body, “Yes of course I will be. And,” he sent Katherine a sweet grin, “Whenever Katherine would like, you are welcome whenever. I can send a car to get you tomorrow if you’d like.”
Katherine’s eyes widened, a grin spreading on her lips, “Really..?”
Bucky nodded, “Well, yeah. I’m not going to keep you from anyone. Like I said, what’s mine is now yours. That applies to you wanting to have guests over.”
Steve opened the door for them, signaling that it was time to go. Bucky placed his hand on the small of Katherine’s back, leading her into the car.
“Then I guess I’ll see you tomorrow Sagey! I’ll talk to you later, okay?” Katherine hummed, giving her friend a smile as she got into the car, Bucky sliding in after her.
“Sounds good to me! Love you bunches!”
“I love you too.” She returned the words, before ending the call.
“She seems fun.”
Katherine’s eyes looked at Bucky, who seemed to be holding in a laugh. She glanced towards the front, Steve seeming to be doing the same. Soon though, Katherine began to laugh, Steve and Bucky letting out their laughter as well.
“Yeah, yeah.. She’s uhm.. She can be a lot, sometimes.” Katherine grinned, “She just worries about me..” She let out a soft sigh, “Besides dad, she’s really all I have.”
Bucky’s expression softened, hearing her words. He glanced towards Steve, who was focused on driving now. He hesitantly reached for her hand with his flesh one, gently capturing her soft skin. He offered a kind smile.
“You have me now.”
Katherine looked to his eyes, only to find they were already peering into her own. She didn’t flinch away from the contact, finding that even though his hand was a bit rough.. It was also quite warm.
“And me!” Steve shouted to them, making both Bucky and Katherine chuckle.
Her lips curved up into a small smile, nodding her head to Bucky. “You’re right.”
The remainder of the car ride was spent in silence. Bucky’s hand still gently holding onto Katherine’s, both of them lost deep in their thoughts. It wasn’t an awkward silence though, Katherine was actually quite comfortable. Her eyes gazed out the car window as the car came to a stop, the big house towering over them. She noticed, though, a man standing at the base of the steps. It was someone she thought she had recognized.. She was snapped out of her daze, when she realized Bucky’s hand was in front of her, him having opened the door for her.
“Come on.” He smiled, as Katherine took his hand.
“Thank you.” She said, getting up and out of the car.
Bucky gently held her hand, moving her hand to rest on the inside of his arm, as they walked up towards the house. Steve walked up next to them, eyeing the man as they approached.
“Mr. Stark..” Bucky’s voice greeted him, no particular emotion in his voice.
Katherine looked towards the man, curiously, but she could feel Bucky bring her closer to him. She realized who the man was; He was rather famous. At least, in New York. He was a VIP wherever he went.. Geneous, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist.
“Mr. Barnes, Mr. Rogers.” The man had his arms crossed on his chest, an eyebrow quirking up when his eyes laid on Katherine, “And who is this?”
She was about to give him her name, but Bucky’s words were first, “My girl.”
Katherine felt her cheeks heat up, she was sure that everyone else could see it as well. Did he really just introduce her… As his girl? Something about the words made butterflies dance in the pit of her stomach. In reality, it was true.. They hadn’t actually spoken about it, but that was the deal.
“Ah, so it’s true.” Mr. Stark let out a soft huff of air, “When's the wedding? I’ll have to send a gift.”
Katherine tensed under the man’s gaze, instinctively trying to hide in Bucky’s side. Her eyes met Steve’s, and it seemed that he sensed her discomfort. Bucky must have as well, because he removed her hand from his arm, and draped his arm around her shoulders.
“There’s no date yet, I’ll let you know.” Bucky let out a sigh, “What can I do for ya, Tony? We’re just getting back.. You can wait in my office for me.”
His eyes stayed on Katherine for a long moment, before nodding his head towards Bucky, “Business as per usual. I’ll be waiting.”
Steve opened the door, Tony walking in and headed towards Bucky’s office. Steve followed him, as if he always did. Bucky walked with Katherine, his arm still around her as he led her up to her bedroom. They stopped at her door, Bucky letting out a soft sigh.
“I’m sorry, Katherine. I had hoped to be able to spend more time with you tonight.. But duty calls.”
Katherine offered him a small smile, “It’s alright.. Thank you for dinner. I had a really great time tonight.”
Bucky’s lips curved into a grin, “Me too, doll.”
“Will I see you before the end of the night?” She asked, actually a bit hopeful that he might say yes.
His arm fell from around her, his hand raising to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, their eyes locked on each other. He kept his grin, “Of course. Let’s just hope this meeting doesn’t last forever.. Tony talks a lot.”
Katherine chuckled a bit, “Well, you have fun with that.”
They both laughed softly, not seeming to really want to leave. Katherine let out a soft sigh, turning to open her bedroom door. Bucky started to walk off, but found himself looking back at her, a smile on his lips. Katherine returned the smile, before going into her room.
The rest of her night was pretty.. Calm. She had unpacked her clothes, which took up almost no space in her closet. She video called Sage for a bit, before deciding to take a shower. She stood under the hot beams of water for a while, just relaxing. Her mind wouldn’t stop though.. Her thoughts were completely consumed by Bucky. She tried her best to not think about the rumors and stories she’d heard about him, forming her own opinion. He had been nothing but kind to her, and she genuinely enjoyed his presence. His smile made her weak at the knees, and his laugh was contagious. She never thought that it would be this easy to like the man she was promised to. Though, she was sure that this might just be a fluke, only being the first day. As she got out of the shower, she looked at herself in the mirror. She sighed softly as she brushed her teeth, and went through the usual nightly routine. She decided that pajamas were calling for her, as well as her bed.. She looked at the time on her phone. Bucky had been in the meeting for almost three hours. She let out a breath, as she pulled her oversized t-shirt on. Just as she sat on her bed, she received a text.
‘Something else had come up, during the meeting.. I’m afraid I might not make it up to see you, before you go to bed. Don’t wait up, I’ll see you in the morning.’
Katherine read the words, and actually felt.. A bit sad that she wouldn’t see him. Regardless, he was a busy man. She didn’t even know what all he did, being the head of the mob. She replied to his text pretty directly.
‘It’s alright, I understand. I’m going to read for a while, before I actually go to bed.’
She pulled up a book on her phone, going to where she last left off. Her eyes were soon glued to the words, as she snuggled into the bed. Which was the most comfortable bed she’d ever felt. Soon, her mind was completely divulged into the fantasy world she read about. She almost stopped thinking about him, but of course her mind decided to play tricks.
She wasn’t sure when she fell asleep, having read a few chapters of her book. But the sound of her bedroom door opening, stirred her a bit. She rolled over in the bed, attempting to pull apart her heavy eyelids.
“Shh, doll. It’s just me..”
Bucky.
She could hear him moving around her room, and felt that he touched the bed. He had taken her phone, putting it on the phone charger and setting it on the nightstand. Katherine managed to get her eyes open, a small smile spreading across her lips.
“Hi..” her voice was soft, very obviously sleepy.
A low rumble of a chuckle passed his lips, as he leaned over the bed. He tucked some hair behind her ear, like before. She could feel his breath on her face, and her drowsy mind wanted her to pull him closer.
“Bucky…” She hummed out his name, leaning her head into his hand.
“I’m just checking on you.. Get some sleep, alright? We’ll have breakfast in the morning, and can talk then.” His voice was quiet, soft and velvety smooth.
She hummed in response, slowly nodding her head towards him. She wanted to be wide awake. She wanted to stay up with him, talking, seeing that smile.. But she was already so tired, and laid comfortably in her bed. She managed to keep her eyes open long enough, to see that he was looking at her.
In a sleepy daze, her voice sounded out to him, “My girl?” She asked him, though not really having intended to do so.
He smiled at her, nodding his head, “Gotta make sure the world knows it. Can’t have anyone trying to come in and sweep you away from me..”
Those were the last words she heard, before she settled back into the bed, falling asleep.

Book 2 Chapter 29 - Of Goldburg and the Queen Thereof
Text Audio
Synopsis:
Ralph looks for news of the Maiden, and meets with the Queen of Goldburg.
Summary:
“As Clement told me, thou seekest the Well at the World's End, and through Utterness and by Utterbol is a way whereby folk seek thither. Mayst thou find it, and may it profit thee more than it did my kinsman of old,”
The next morning, Ralph and Clement met in the hall, and Clement said: “Lord Ralph, as I told you in Whitwall, we merchants have gone as far eastward as we will go, and in about twenty days we’ll be turning back towards the mountains. However, I think that you intend to follow your quest for the maiden, and whatever else you may be looking for. Now, you can do whatever you want while we are here in Goldburg, but come back to us before we leave. If you want, you can take some of our men, who are quite fond of you. But now, when you have done your best during our time here, if you have not found anything, I beg you to come back with us, so that we can both return to Upmeads together, where you will live and make your father proud. I think this will be better for you than throwing your life away chasing after a woman—who might not even be anything to you once you find her—or in pursuing some fairytale that you will never reach, however far you search. I have known for a while that you intend to seek the Well at the World’s End—and who knows if there even is such a thing? You are young and fair and strong, and if you look for wealth you will have it, and I will help you the best I can, if that means anything. Think, child, there are those who love you in Upmeads and around it, not the least of which is your gossip, my wife, dame Katherine.”
Ralph said: “Master Clement, I thank you for all this you’ve said, and your concern, and your help. Your counsel is good, and I will follow it in all ways except for one: if I have not found the maiden before you turn back, I must stay in this land and search for her. I ask you and your gossip to forgive me[1] if I don’t answer your love as you want me to—and perhaps as I should. And I apologize also to Upmeads—but I must do this thing to fulfill the oath I gave when Duke Osmand made me a knight last year, in the church of St. Laurence of Upmeads.”[2]
Clement said: “I see that there is more to it than that; I see that you are young and that love and desire hold greater sway over you than your knightly oath. Well, that’s the way it goes; until you have her, she’ll be the only woman in the world for you.”
“No, that’s not the case, Master Clement,” said Ralph, “and I will tell you this—so that you can trust my denial of your words. Since I left Upmeads, I have been caught in the hardships of love, and I desired a fair woman, and I won the love of that woman, and death has taken her. Do you believe me?”
“Yes,” said Clement, “but for someone as young as you, love is not pulled out by the root, and it can soon grow again.”
“Now tell my gossip about this when you return home,” Ralph said sadly. Clement nodded, and in a moment Ralph went on: “And now I will begin my search in Goldburg by asking you to introduce me to the merchants and anyone else who might have heard news of the maiden.”
He looked at Clement anxiously as he spoke, and Clement smiled, for it seemed to him that looking into Ralph’s heart on this matter was like looking into a room through an open window.[3] But Clement said: “Don’t worry, I’ll do it. I’m your friend, not your schoolmaster.”
Then he left Ralph, and over the next three days, he had brought him to talk with anyone who was likely to know anything about the matter; and they all said that they had not seen such a woman, and that the Lord of Utterbol had not been in Goldburg in the last three months. But one of the merchants said: “Master Clement, if this young knight is going to Utterbol, he is carrying his life in his hand, as you know full well. You should bring him to our Queen, who is good and compassionate and will at least right him a letter to give to that tyrant, which may protect him. It does not do well for anyone to go against the will of our Lady and QUeen; she will surely pay him back for any misdeeds against her friends, one day.”
Clement said, “That’s a good idea; I’ll do it.”
They spent four days doing all this,[4] and, during that time, Ralph was going here and there asking questions to anyone he met, including new people that came to the city—hunters from the foothills and the forests of the plains, sailors, and others—about the maiden and the Lord of Utterbol; and Bull also went looking for news. While Ralph asked straight-out what he wanted to know, Bull was careful and steered conversations towards the answers he sought, so that the people he spoke with never even saw the question.[5] However, it was all the same, and neither of them learned anything. Indeed, the mention of the Lord of Utterbol (who Bull did not mention, but Ralph did), was enough to stop anyone from talking, and make them quickly walk away.
On the firth day, Clement came to Ralph and said: “Now I will bring you to the Queen, and she is young, and so fair—and wise, too—that I think the sight of her may put an end to your quest once and for all. You may decide to stay here and enjoy a far better life than wandering among strange folk, who are dangerous and cruel. Yes, and so you might have that life, if you decide to pursue it, for she is extremely beautiful, wise, well-spoken, and of good lineage.”
Ralph heard this and reddened, but did not answer. They went together to the High House of the Queen, which was as lovely as a piece of the Kingdom of Heaven, having so many pillars of bright marble, gilded, and with finely-carved supports. There were few wall-hangings, for the walls were also excellently carved and painted with beautiful pictures. The floors were so fine and intricate that they seemed as if they were made to be walked by only the fairest of women—and all of this was set among gardens, the likes of which they had never seen.
But they entered without fanfare, and were brought by the pages to the Lady’s innermost chamber, and if the rest of the house were beautiful, this was the best, and a marvel to behold, so that it seemed to have been made by goldsmiths and jewelers rather than by masons and carpenters. And yet, many had told Clement that the Queen who sat there was the most beautiful part of it all.
She spoke to Clement and said: “Hail, merchant! Is this the young knight you have spoken of—the one who seeks his beloved that was taken into slavery by evil men?”[6]
“He is,” said Clement.
But Ralph said: “No, my Lady, the maiden I seek is not my beloved, but my friend. My beloved is dead.”[7]
The Queen looked at him, smiling kindly, but her face was somewhat troubled. She said: “Master chapman,[8] your time here is not very long, for all that you want to do. Therefore, we give you leave to depart with our thanks for bringing a friend to see us. But the knight has no business to look after, so if he will stay with us for a while, it would be our pleasure.”
So Clement excused himself and went to deal with his own matters. The Queen had Ralph sit before her, and tell her of his sorrow, but she looked at him so kindly that his heart melted and he could say nothing, only cry in front of her. She watched, the color leaving her face, her lips trembling, and let him cry. But he did not think about her, only himself and how kind she was to him. But after a while he got a hold of himself, and he told her all he had done and gone through. It was a long story to tell, but it was good for him to lay his feelings out to her—both his grief and his hope. She let him talk, and at times she listened to him, and at other she did not, but the whole time she looked at him—though sometimes out of the corner of her eye, as if she were ashamed. As for him, he saw her face and how fair and lovely she was, but there was little desire in his heart for her, hardly more than for one of the painted women on the wall, though he considered her kind and sympathetic.
When he was done, she stayed silent for a while, but at least she gathered thoughts and said: “It is sad for your mother that you are not home with her, where all things would be kind and familiar to you. Maybe you are looking for something that doesn’t exist, or maybe you will look for it and find it, and you may find that there is no reward in it to match your faithfulness and bravery. But in your home, you would have all the things which you desire.”[9]
Then she was silent for a time before continuing: “But I must say that I wish your home were Goldburg.”
He smiled sadly and looked at her, but not in surprise, and indeed he  hardly thought about her as he said: “Lady and Queen, you are good to me beyond measure. But look, I had one home and I left it; I sought another, and I lost it. Now I have no home. Maybe someday I will go back to my old home, and sometimes I wonder how they will see me—for that is a happy land, and I have become sorrowful.”
“Fear not,” she said; “I say again that your home shall look kindly upon you, no matter what.
Once more she sat silently, and Ralph had no words in his heart to say. At last she sighed and said: “Fair lord, I ask you got come and go in this house as if it were your own, but as there are many people who need to speak with me and many tasks which I must see to, I ask that you return three days from now, and in that time I will make preparations for your search, so that I might aid you on your way to Utterness, which is not far away from Utterbol, and which is the furthest town that we know anything about. I will write you a letter to give to the lord of Utterbol, which he will pay attention to if he at all cares about me as a friend or an enemy. Come back for it in three days.”
Then she stood and took him by the hand, leading him to the door, and he left, thanking her kindness and amazed at her polite and gentle speech.
For those three days, he still looked for any news he could find, and soon word of him spread far and wide, and people talked about him. He went to the Queen’s House at the appointed time and was brought to her chamber once again, and she was alone in it. She greeted him and smiled extremely kindly, but he could not help but see that she looked sad and her face was worn with sorrow. She had him sit beside her, and she said: “Have you heard anything about the woman you seek?”
“No,” he said, “and now I’m thinking I’ll have to leave the city to keep looking. I have some good friends who will accompany me, at least for a while. But you haven’t heard anything, my Lady?”
“Nothing about the young woman,” she said. “But there is something else. As Clement told me, you are looking for the Well at the World’s End, and the way people go in seeking that is through Utterness and Utterbol.[10] I hope you find it, and I hope that it does more good for you than it did my ancestor, who first built Goldburg in the wilderness. For him it was nothing but conflict and confusion, until he was killed in a fight where losing meant losing his life, and winning meant winning shame and misery.”[11]
She looked at him sweetly and said: “You are in no way like him, and if you drink from the Well, you will go back to Upmeads and your parents and your own people and home. But here is a letter which you should give to the Lord of Utterbol if you meet him, and maybe he will not be as evil a man as the stories go.”
She gave him the letter and continued: “And now I have this to say to you: if you find trouble and are near enough to call upon my aid, come to me and—whatever situation you might be in, whatever thing you might have done—there will be an open door and a loving welcome for you here.”
Her voice shook a little as she spoke, and for a while she was silent again, taking hold of herself. “At last, I must say this to you so that there might be no lies between us: that young woman of whom you spoke, saying that she was just your friend and not your love—Oh, I wish that I might be your friend in that way! But it is very clear to me that that will not be the case. I think about your future adventures, and they will be shared with someone other than me. Friend, it seems so, so strange to me that I have met you so suddenly, and loved the so dearly, and that I must say goodbye to you after so short a time. Farewell, farewell!”[12]
Then she got up, and once again took his hand and led him to the door. He was sorry and amazed, for he had not thought enough about her before to realize her love for him, and he thought that she—being happy and powerful—was merely being gracious to one who was so unlucky and cast adrift in the world. He was amazed by her words and terribly ashamed that he had not truly spoken to her, or hardly looked at her, because of his grief. He did not know what to do or say.
So he left the Queen’s House, as though the pavement beneath his feet were red hot.
Notes:
[1]  “And I pray the pardon both of thee and of thy gossip,” I’ve mentioned before that I don’t fully understand the context and meaning of “gossip” in this use, so I don’t know if Ralph’s reference to Dame Katherine as Clement’s gossip is a mistake or not. I assume not, since there are two ways this can be read without error: one is that Dame Katherine is Clement’s wife, and so there may be some shared connection of gossip-hood there; and the second is Ralph saying it like “that gossip you’re talking about,” which is kind of rude and I think is not correct.
[2a] Ralph has been referred to as a “knight” throughout, but this is (unless I’m mistaken) the first time it’s explicitly stated that he’s a Knight, sworn and appointed. In that case, he would have made an oath to follow certain tenets and virtues, one of which probably covers “save women who have been kidnapped and sold into slavery.” In that sense, Ralph is actually right; although I don’t know how seriously he is expected to actually actively pursue the problems his oath tasks him to solve, or whether it’s more of a symbolic thing.
[2b] “Duke Osmand” has not been mentioned before and is not mentioned again. Research shows that he is probably not a relative of Ralph’s, but it’s possible (which might explain why he was given the duty of knighting the king’s son. “St Laurence” (in reference to a church) has been mentioned before and is probably the church in Upmeads that was mentioned in the first chapters.
[3] Pretty sure this means it’s easy/clear.
[4] The three days spent are listed as “and within three days he had brought [Ralph to speak with…]” and then this one is “So wore four days,” which is a bit unclear. “Within three days” tells me “before three days had passed,” and “So wore four days” tells me that four days were spent like that. This isn’t saying that they spent a week doing this, it’s saying  four days, I’m just not completely sure of what delineates day four from the first three, since we don’t have much context for Clement’s talk with this nameless merchant.
[5] I know that Ralph is a bit of a bumpkin, but it’s funny to me that Bull Shockhead—a “wildman” who lives in the mountains, wears animal hides, and is treated as a savage by those who live in “civilization” nearby—is better at talking with people than Ralph is.
[6] Something feels wrong about changing the Queen’s speech to be modern… "Hail, merchant! Is this the young knight of whom thou tellest, he who seeketh his beloved that hath been borne away into thralldom by evil men?" I considered splitting the difference and keeping the parts of her old-timey speech that would be clear to the average reader, but decided against it. Still, I’ll try to make her sound regal. To avoid making yet another note, I’ll mention that she uses the “royal we.”
[7] Pretend I took the time to make another version of the “of course, he’s dead now” meme that I did back when the Lady introduced the King’s Son to the narrative, then immediately said he was dead.
[8] “Chapman” is lowercase in the original text, which makes it hard to tell if she’s calling him that because it’s his job or his last name (being medieval times, it’s both).
[9] I believe this “seeking and finding” talk she gives is in reference to Dorothea, not the Well, though it certainly can be seen as both.
[10a] It’s time to talk about place names! Most place names are pretty obvious. “Upmeads” = “Up” (it’s in the north), and “meads” which refers to meadows, describing its idyllic, natural beauty. Wulstead = “wool” (I assume) + “stead” (town/city). Higham-on-the-Way = “Higham” (actual place name meaning like “high town;” Higham is built up on a hill, if I remember correctly) + “on” (preposition) + “the way” (“the road;” Higham is on the main road of the area). Bourton Abbas = Bourton (an actual name of multiple villages in the UK) + “Abbas” (related to “Abbey,” I think, based on research, probs a reference to its proximity to Higham). The Burg of the Four Friths (covered this back when it was relevant).
[10b] “Whitwall” = (probably) “white” + “wall” (Whitwall’s wall was notable). “Whitwall” is also a kind of bird? “Cheaping Knowe = Market Hill (was explained back then). Whiteness’ buildings were covered in white plaster, which gave a notable effect. Goldburg is a rich, fortified town (“burg” references fortified settlements).
[10c] As for Utterness and Utterbol. “Utter” means “outward” or “remote,” referring to how far east they are from everything. In place names, “ness” refers to a high land formation next to water, or extending out into water (I don’t remember if this describes Utterness). Could also be read as “remoteness” (I don’t remember Whiteness being next to water, so in both cases it could be “-ness,” the abstraction suffix). Utterbol = “Utter” + “bol” (not actually sure on this one. “Bol” and “-bol” don’t have obvious meanings for this, though may be related to “bole,” meaning the trunk of a tree).
[11] I take this to mean that the fight was shameful in cause, possibly because her ancestor did something bad that caused the fight (like by taking something that wasn’t his), or he picked the fight for a bad reason (like jealousy over a woman). This is a culture where fighting for the right reasons (defending oneself, defending another, punishing evil) is considered honorable, and fighting for bad reasons (being caught on the wrong end of a “right reason,” or like a bar fight where no one comes out looking good).
[12] Another instance of Ralph’s unconscious charisma. He wins friends wherever he goes, and people like him (or at least often pity him). Note that “love” here is a broader term than in our language; like I mentioned with “friend” previously, it describes someone who is close to or important to the speaker, including friends and allies. It’s not necessarily romantic love, but I have no doubt that the Queen’s fondness for Ralph borders on romantic, or would become romantic eventually.

The Villians of Hello from the Hallowoods are Amazing
TW: Homophobia, Transphobia, Capitalism, Religious Trauma and mentions of Harry Potter and It Chapter Two. (There will also be some spoilers for s1).
In the celebration of new season 2 of Hello from the Hallowoods I would like to talk about the magnificently horrifying creations of Mx. Wellman.
In the Harry Potter fandom, it’s widely agreed upon that Dolores Umbridge is far more detestable and far more terrifying than Voldemort. As many before me this phenomenon has been attributed to the fact that is more likely for the readers/viewers of the series to meet an Umbridge rather than a Voldemort in their day-to-day life.
In another (better written article) Katherine McCain describes this as the ‘Umbridge Effect’ in correlation to It Chapter Two (the movie) and the new villains its aged-up protagonists’ face: homophobia, domestic abuse, anxiety, divorce etc. Concluding with saying that we may never face a shape-shifting child-eating entity but the problems describe above are all too real for comfort.
Tumblr media
[ID: Umbridge cloak and next to it a text that says: The Umbridge effect. That is to say, specifically Dolores Umbridge. If you are not familiar with Harry Potter, this is a much despised character from the books that may have made even more of an impact tham its main antagonist, Lord Voldemort.
It has been suggested by many online that it’s because she represents a real-world evil that many can relate to and as a teacher, this is the woman that will put you down, that will tell you you will amount to nothing and that it is her way or no way at all. A lot of us have encountered that teacher for ourselves and sometimes the impact extends far beyond the classroom.]
Hello from the Hallowoods utilizes this Umbridge Effect to the best of its capacity by knowing very clearly who its audience is, making it all better as being the same as the creator. Hello from the Hallowoods (or HFTH) is describe by Mx. Wellman (the creator) as a “LGBTQ+ Horror Podcast”. This audio drama was and is made by queer people with a queer audience in mind.
Even though intersectionality is a thing and different queer people are face too different challenges, there are unique struggles and characters that you might come across because you are a queer person.
For example, Solomon Reed a.k.a. the Instrumentalist: a transphobic, homophobic, queer father, musician and Christian man that uses his faith as an excuse to murder the people he deems sinners and/or unnatural.
The relationship between queer identities and religion is somewhat complicated and the relationship between Christianity and queerness arguably more. Solomon Reed encapsulates amazingly the worst of that relationship.
A radical Christian that hates ‘homosexuals’ is a character sadly very familiar for LGBTQ+ audiences. However I think that the musician is especially terrifying to the trans listeners. Mainly because one of his other relationships apart from his religion is with his son Percy Reed whom Solomon Reed repeatedly misgenders, neglects and abuses.
Even though the Instrumentalist flirts with the Voldemort side of the conversation by his arguably more horrible deeds being literally turning people into instruments he comes off as far more Umbridge through the relationships with his family, community and speeches about saving humanity and doing the lords biding.
A recipe for disaster to many minorities not just queer ones however, with actively disrespecting his son and targeting the canon queer characters the LGBTQ+ audience can see their ‘enemies’ in real life depicted in him.
But there is something that makes this villain even better (or worse?) is the fact that Solomon is queer himself and at the same time infested with homophobia. Also speaking a truth about the harm of internalized homophobia and makes the ‘institution’ that perpetuates these ideas the real villain. Although it is still Solomon’s fault never challenging these ideas and continuing to express his hate.
Another way that Mx. Wellman utilizes the Umbridge Effect to its maximum is by knowing the tropes of the medium.
It is a well-known fact that 9 times out of 10 the villain of an audio drama (from 2012 and beyond sort of) will be some representation of capitalism, and who can do this better than Lady Ethel Mallory the face of BotCo Corporations.
Tumblr media
[ID: Is this a pigeon meme with the guy being the ‘podcast writers’ the butterfly being ‘capitalism/goverment’ and the question ‘is this the villian of my podcast?’]
Lady Ethel Mallory is The Girl boss, she has made her way up to the up in the dream industry (though not to ‘up’ since there’s still her male boss) by knowing the ins and outs of marketing.
She’s called The Lady by her coworkers, she’s in charge of searching for and capturing one of the main protagonists Riot whose mom is founder of the Stone maidens (an anti-capitalist rock band), and she’s the number one pain in the ass of our narrator Nikignik.
She interrupts the broadcast each time in the climax to give you from a crash course on how to market yourself to spreading propaganda about the Stone maidens to inviting you to the prime dream (the ultimate escapism) like the ads on cable tv or sponsorships in YouTube videos. By playing this role in the format of the show she is not only an antagonist to our protagonists but also to the public, we want to listen to the story, but she can’t stop talking about the latest BotCo achievement.
But what made me love her (as a villain) was the following...
For an LGBTQ+ story you’ll think that the villains of the story will be homophobes and HFTH proves you right with Solomon, but our Lady is different.
In a bonus episode named ‘Q&A with Lady Ethel Mallory’ one of the asks was “Could you say Trans Rights?” And she did it with glee even going as far to include other members of the LGBT+ community and end with a cheerful “Rights for all”. Likewise in the main storyline she has never seen to carry the same ideology that the Instrumentalist does however that doesn’t stop her to work with him.
Tumblr media
[ID: Lady Ethel Mallory in a corset with a trans flag circle behind her in a very cool pose]
Lady Ethel Mallory is not only a capitalist icon, but she encapsulates perfectly the current relationship that corporations have with queer people. She never bats an eye at working with homophobic people or destroying the live of a queer young woman, but you will never find her saying something “offensive” that could damage her image.
To conclude I am a simp for Lady Ethel Mallory and Mx. Wellman is such a great writer. By knowing their audience and the stories they want to tell without the restrictions of a network Mx. Wellman is able to utilize the Umbridge Effect to imaginable extents and make villains that are memorable.

Thorns & Roses (2)
Tumblr media
Pairings: Tyler Lockwood x Reader / Damon Salvatore!Brother x Reader / Stefan Salvatore!Twin Brother x Reader
Summary: After 50 years, your brothers asked you to come back to Mystic Falls. Katherine seemed to be back again, which is why they both worried about you and want to keep an eye on you. While your brothers tried to find Katherine, you came closer to a greater danger then a psychopathic vampire. A Werewolf.
Chapter Summary:  After Katherine revealed herself to Caroline again, you now knew that she would be at the Masquerade Ball too. Katherine wanted the moonstone, but you and your brothers wouldn't let that happen. Even if they didn't want to let you in on their plan, they finally did and you went to the ball together to get rid of her once and for all. When you met Katherine, it became clear that the moonstone wasn’t her only target - you had to protect Tyler at all costs.
Word Count: 3,012
Authors Note: This is Part Two of Thorns & Roses, I had to re-write it. I hope you liked it. (Part One: Here!)
_____________________________________
A bit later you arrived at the ball, accompanied by Jeremy Gilbert, who was also privy to the plan. The Lockwood Mansion was beautifully decorated, Carol or the party planners really exceeded all expectations. From the outside you could already see how well the family was and how important the evening would be for the Lockwoods.
You could feel some looks piercing you both. One especially, as you looked at the entrance to the Lockwood Mansion. Tyler was visibly confused why you would show up with Jeremy, since you knew that the two didn't get along very well.
Jeremy also noticed Tyler's penetrating gaze. "I thought you were just friends, is there finally more now?" he grinned.
You took your mask (X) out of your pocket and put it on. “Don’t be like that, Jer!”  You chuckled.
To Tyler's displeasure too, you and Jeremy were also friends. It was hard to avoid since he was the brother of your Twin's girlfriend. You decided to stay out of their argument as much as possible. But it wasn't always easy to do justice to both friends.
But unlike Tyler, Jeremy knew your secrets. Jeremy knew you were a Vampire and he knew that Tyler was more than just a friend to you and even if the two didn't particularly like each other, Jeremy accepted your feelings and was there for you, because no one else should know how you felt about Tyler. It was nice to have someone from whom you didn't have to keep any secrets.
______________
Jeremy noticed how nervous you were getting with every step you took towards the entrance.
“You ready?” Jeremy asked you, you nodded. “Are you afraid?”
You probably wouldn't admit it to anyone, but you couldn’t really describe your feelings. Today the day had finally come when you and your brothers could finally free yourselves from Katherine. Meanwhile you found yourself on a beautiful Masquerade Ball that you could hardly enjoy, since you would use every free second to make sure Tyler is safe while he’d be flirting with other girls.
“Not of Katherine. She tried to kill me before and failed.” You took Jeremy’s arm. “But I know that something bad is going to happen, I feel it.” You mumbled.
“Gilbert, who’s your stunning partner?” Tyler complimented you while also trying to provoke.
Tyler didn’t looked bad himself, actually he looked really handsome as he faced you in his black suit, it was hard not to stare at him for too long.
You could see how Jer’ rolled his eyes under his mask. “I’ll get us something to drink.”
Now it was time to stick to the plan, find Katherine, distract her and kill her. But when you noticed Tyler's eyes watching Jeremy go, with the corners of his mouth drawn down as he tried to hide his fist, the plan had to wait a second
“Don’t tell me you’re mad because I invited Jeremy.”
“I’m not, I-”
“Hi Tyler, I looked everywhere for you.” Sarah took his hand and smiled flirty.
Suddenly you felt insecure to see Sarah cuddle up to Tyler, it hurt but of course you didn't want anyone to notice, so you did what you could best and turned your pain into anger.
You placed your arm on your hip and your facial features changed.
“Y/N, it’s not like that-”
“Hmh.” You let out and walked passed them, hitting Tyler’s shoulder, then you stopped and turned around.
Even if you were confused about why Tyler was upset with you inviting Jeremy when he was with Sarah, you were more hurt that the others were right, Tyler flirted with everyone and didn't even hide it. He had no right to be mad at you if Sarah was his companion, whom he would probably replace with some other cheerleader later that night.
“You can forget our movie night tomorrow.”
Sarah covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. The moment you said it you wanted to take it back. But now there was no turning back, with faked self-confidence you walked away from them and went in search of Katherine.
______________
After you were out of Tyler's sight, you moved into a corner where no one could see you and took a deep breath. The moment didn't last long, Jeremy found you, luckily, really with drinks in his hands.
Jeremy noticed that something must’ve happened, “Did he become a werewolf yet?”
You took both glasses and emptied them one by one. Jeremy chuckled. “What? You’re under age and I needed it, thanks by the way.”
Jeremy saw Tyler coming inside with Sarah, “Because of-”
“Yeah, lets not talk about that. We’ve a mission, shall we?”
“You should’ve seen the food first, before we die.” Jeremy tried to be funny as he lent you his arm, he made you smile and Tyler noticed from across the room.
______________
Jeremy and you went into the huge Lockwoods garden, which was just as crowded as the house with handsome people, who wouldn't suspect there were vampires among them. They all danced, talked and drunk happily. For a brief moment you wish you were like them, normal.
Jeremy got you out of your thoughts, “You see them?” he asked looking around.
“Well, that’s the fork in the road between you and me, my friend.”
“I hear Damon, look for Caroline and Bonnie.” You commanded while walking to your brothers.
“I don’t hesitate.”
You chuckled. “You sure about that, Brother? I mean you spent 145 years loving her.”
Stefan nodded. “Exactly.”
Damon seemed offended. “I won’t hesitate.”
“Don’t worry, if you will, I definetly won’t.” You kissed his cheek. “Now find her.” You demanded.
“Did I say I missed her?” Damon questioned himself and Stefan couldn’t resist chuckling.
______________
You decide to go back into the house looking for Katherine there while your brothers would look for her outside. You found yourself in the kitchen and Jeremy was right, the food was delicious and so was Carol’s wine you found under the sink.  It wouldn't hurt to open the bottle of wine, even a broken bottle could hurt Katherine, if needed.
The kitchen door opened and you tried to hide the wine bottle behind your back. If the waiters come you would compell them to forget what they saw but it was Tyler.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Is that my mom’s wine?” He raised an eyebrow.
You stopped hiding the bottle and took a sip to provoke him. “Nope.” You lied.
Tyler smirked and lifted his hand up. You gave him the bottle and rolled your eyes.
He surprised you when he took a sip from the bottle himself. "Now I know why she's been hiding this one for years now." he made you both laugh. “Now there it is.”
When you realized that Tyler meant your smile, you stopped and put on a more serious expression. You couldn’t hide your reddened cheeks though. Visibly ashamed, you looked at the floor and tried to think about how you could get out of here to get Tyler out of the way.
“I’m sorry I forgot movie night.” You ignored his words. He came closer to you and gave you the bottle back, “Did I mention how beautiful you look?”
“Stop that and go back to Sarah.”
“Do I smell jealousy?”
“No. That’s me not caring about your affairs, at all.” You exclaimed.
He bit his lips. “Okay come on.” Tyler grabbed your hand, even though you tried to get him off, he wouldn’t let go. “You owe me a dance.”
You and Tyler went to his father's office, the only room where it was quiet and nobody would disturb, including the only room you were never allowed to enter.
“Tyler, I’ve no time for this. I need to find my brothers.”
You were about to leave the room, but Tyler got in your way. His eyes fixed yours and it seemed impossible to look away. He placed his Hand gently on your cheek. It felt so soft and warm, you wouldn't have expected that from a footballer. You couldn't help but put your head in his hand. It calmed you down and made you feel safe.
“If you don’t want me to see other girls, just say-”
“Hey guys!” Matt thrust in and ruined the moment.
Matt stormed into the office with Amy and Sarah. Uncomfortable and somehow ashamed you took a few steps back, away from Tyler, who was visibly annoyed by Matt's appearance. They had a few bottles in their arms and Matt was already quite drunk.
“Did we interrupt something?” Amy giggled with Matt.
When you saw how jealous Sarah was, you remembered that you were actually on a mission to get rid of another jealous woman in your life, so you had no time to deal with her now
“I’ll see you later. Have fun.” You mumbled.
You passed Tyler who tried to grab your hand, but there was no more than a brief touch. You felt how he looked after you, but there was also no time to look back.
______________
So far the evening has not gone as planned, you didn’t have much time to look for Katherine and it wasn’t easy to concentrate after what just happened in the office - or rather what didn’t happen. Your own jealousy got in the way of your senses until you saw Bonnie walking up the stairs, they found Katherine.
To make sure Katherine wouldn't follow or kill Bonnie, you went up too.
“Did you find her?”
Jeremy joined and you three went to another room, he put a bag on the table and took out the guns.
“Careful with that.” You responded as he jokingly pointed at you. “I’m still faster.” You showed your fangs and smirked.
“Is that?” Jeremy noticed Bonnie’s spell book.
“Yes, it was my ancestor Emily’s.” She confirmed. “The spell I’m doing here is similar to the one that sealed the vampires into the tomb.”
You looked out of the window and clenched your teeth, “I’ll kill him.” Jeremy walked next to you and saw Katherine and Stefan dancing together.
“Bon’, I think you should hurry.” He suggested.
“I’m gonna go get Damon.” You growled.
______________
Finding Damon wasn't difficult, he was just about to tell Caroline what she had to do. Then he escorted you outside.
“Relax, he’s keeping her distracted.”
You crossed your arms, “he could just do that by breaking her neck and dragging her upstairs.” you replied sarcastically.
From far away you could watch the two of them, but not hear them. It was too loud for that. When they suddenly stopped dancing while the music was still playing, you knew something was wrong.
“Y/N, I think it might be your time to shine now.” Damon gave you one last glance, then he walked away.
______________
Katherine was about to walk in your direction, now you had to get her attention as Bonnie wasn't finished with her spell yet. Damon withdrew into the crowd so it wouldn’t be too suspicious but he stayed close enough to step in if he had to.
You took off your mask and stood next to the entrance. You grabbed a waiter and pretended to be talking to him.
“Well, if that isn’t my favorite Twin.” Katherine smirked as she noticed you. “Go away.” She compelled the waiter.
You scoffed. “Thought you just danced with your favorite.”
She crossed her arms, “Nah. Unfortunately, your brother doesn't seem to like me as much as he used to, is that Elena’s or your fault?” Kathrine had to chuckle, it made you shiver not being allowed to rip her heart out. “Either way, I’m planning to get rid of both of you.”
You faked a laugh. “Clearly, you don’t remember our time together, don’t you know how hard it is to get rid of me, Katherine?”
Katherine gave you one of her outrageous smiles. Her smile still seemed inviting and warm, even if you knew she was the devil, you were sure she could still be your brothers' Kryptonite.
“Have fun with you Wolfie, heard you liked him a bit too much.” She winked at you.
You grabbed her arm and pushed her against the wall. “You should know better than provoking me, Katherine. If you even touch Tyler, I'll tear your head off your shoulders.”
Katherine took your arm, it didn't seem easy for her, but in the end she was able to tear herself away from you. "Y/N, dear, people are already looking at us. Where are your manners?" She looked around and came closer to your ear. “That must be the bad influence of Tyler.” She whispered only to provoke you once more now that she knew, you weren’t as strong as her.
Katherine went inside and the guests were still staring at you. While your blood was boiling inside and you wanted nothing more than to get rid of Katherine, Jeremy appeared in the crowd.
“What just happened?”
“Nothing, tell me Bonnie is ready or I’ll have to make a scene again.” You replied and Jeremy nodded. “Good. If something happens, call me. I need to find Tyler.”
______________
When you were inside you looked for Tyler all over the place and still couldn’t find him, until you realized that they could probably still be in his father's office.
You rushed into the office and as you saw Tyler, Matt and even Sarah you were relieved. “You okay, Ty?” You panted and glanced at him.
Tyler nodded and walked over to you, touching your shoulders and seeming more concerned about you. "Are you okay?"
Even if you were good at hiding feelings, you were glad that Katherine’s words were just empty threats, because you were already afraid that she would target Tyler. But when you knew everything was okay, you smiled and let yourself fall into Tyler's arms.
Matt gulped. “Oh isn’t that cute?”
Tyler rolled his eyes and turned around, “Man, what is your problem?”
“Nothing.” Matt replied taking another sip of the glass in his hand while holding a bottle in his other. “I just think you both are funny.”
You too thought Matt's behavior was strange. Tyler turned back to you and tried to ignore Matt. “Wanna go dance now?” He smiled soft and offered his hand.
Matt couldn't hold back his laugh and it seemed that he deliberately spilled a bottle of gin in Tyler's father's office. “Aren’t you two cute?”
“Matt, please stop.” You asked politely. “You know, you can just go to Caroline and ask her to dance too. Maybe then you stop being a dick.”
“Seem’s like you finally have a voice around Tyler.” He chuckled.
You were uncomfortable with Matt's comment but he was right. You were actually very self-confident, but when it came to Tyler, not so much. The friendship was very important to you, but if you confessed your feelings and Tyler didn't feel the same, the friendship would be gone.
“Maybe you should grab some food before you ask her.” Tyler added.
Matt took the family picture that was on the desk and poured gin on it, which made Tyler even more angry. When Matt stopped he was standing in front of Tyler, whom you were holding back.
Tyler squeezed your hand, to assure you he’d not gonna hurt Matt. “I’m not gonna fight you.”
Matt slapped him in the face with a grin. "It's a party man. I'm just kidding." Then he looked at the picture in his hand and hit Tyler again, "Do you remember how your father used to hit you?" He laughed.
You noticed how Tyler could no longer contain himself and so you walked between the two.
“If you say one word now, I’m going to lose it. So go and look for Caroline before you ruin your friendships too.”
“Say’s the girl, dressed like a-” Matt paused and grinned again. “while she just watches how the guy she wants flirts with other women and doesn't even look at her.”
“That’s it!” Tyler growled.
Before Tyler had the chance to come to Matt, you slapped Matt and he fell to the ground knocked out. At that moment you could put the pieces together, Matt's behavior was Katherine's fault. She had compelled him otherwise this wouldn’t make sense but you couldn’t figure out why.
“How did you do that?” Tyler was surprised. You didn’t look like you could knock someone out so effortless.
“Matt failed. If Matt fails, I can’t.” Sarah mumbled.
You looked at her and noticed a knife. “Tyler, look out!”
Tyler turned and Sarah stabbed him in the shoulder. Tyler slapped her away. Sarah landed with her head on the edge of the desk and fell to the floor. Blood slowly poured out of her head.
You tried to hide your face from Tyler when the smell of blood reached your nose. He ran to her and held Sarah's head, trying to stop the bleeding. He mumbled things to himself.
“This can’t be happening!” Tyler panicked.
His heart thudded in his chest. His hands shook. As you could control you face again, you went to Sarah and tried to feel a pulse. But she was dead. He couldn’t look at Sarah any more, he sat in a corner and clutched his hand. He seemed like be choked as he had trouble to breath.
You walked over to him and took his hand, "It's going to be okay, we can fix it.”
“We can’t fix this.” His eyes began to glow in a yellow shade.
Tyler began to growl. He cramped and got on his knees. You got up and took a few steps back while Tyler was on the floor whimpering and growling at the same time.
“What can I do?!” You shouted trying not to cry.
Suddenly it came back to you, The Werewolf Curse. If Tyler killed someone, no matter how, he was going to be a werewolf. That was Katherine's plan, Tyler, the one you loved should be your greatest danger and your death.
Tyler calmed down and even though he could probably kill you, you went over to him and wrapped your arms around him. You helped him get up and told him to go into his room and wait for you.

Broken Things 2/24
by: mldrgrl Rating: varies by chapter, rated R overall See Chapter 1 for summary and notes
Mulder blinks in surprise at the widow’s sudden dismissal.  He’s overwhelmingly concerned for the welfare of this woman he’s just met and he has no idea what to do about it, but he does know he can’t just leave her here.
Moments ago he was looking around this house, thinking that it might just crumble around them where they stood.  The place looks to be already abandoned, far worse than when Old Man Goodwin was living here, and he wasn’t much of a housekeeper.  There are no furnishings.  No dishware or pots and pans that he can see.  No lamps.  Not a knick knack or vase of flowers.  She has nothing.  Less than nothing, really, and he finds that to be unbearable.
The only thing Mulder knows about the widow, Katherine, is that she’s well-spoken and has been educated.  Somewhere along the way there has to have been a fall from grace.  Life has handed her a raw deal, that much he can gather, but there’s a spark of determination in her to keep her head above it all.  She’s utterly captivated him and he’ll be damned if he’s going to let anything happen to her.
A wild idea pops into his head and he’s never been one to pass on a whim, wild or not.  His gut tells him what he’s thinking might be crazy, but he’s followed his gut on crazier notions before and he’s learned to trust his instincts.
“Marry me,” he says.
“I’m...sorry?” Katherine asks.  Her right eyebrow lifts into a perfectly peaked arch and he’s never found anything so endearing in his life.
“Hear me out before you object.”
“I’m listening.”
“Do you have a copy of the lease your husband signed?”
“I do.”
“May I see it?”
She hesitates for a moment, but then turns and moves to the back of the room.  She reaches under the bedstead and returns with a tattered bible which she thumbs through and takes out a folded scrap of paper.  He takes it from her, unfolds it, and then reads it.
“This is good,” he says.  “Exactly as I’d hoped.  Your husband signed a five-year lease with an option to purchase at the end of the term.  Do you know if he has a will?”
“None I’m aware of.”
“And there are no children?”
Her lips part on a breath and then she closes them again and swallows before answering.  “I am unable to have children.”
“I see.”  He folds the lease agreement back along the original creases and hands it back to her.  She slips it into the pages of the bible again.  “Well, in the absence of any will, you would be the sole beneficiary.  If we were to marry, I would assume your assets as well as your debts.  I can pay what’s owed and if Mr. Skinner will allow it, make good on the option early.  And you do know that it would also mean that what I own becomes yours as well.”
“I am quite certain you could own this land without marrying me.”
“That’s true I probably could.  But, then where would that leave you?”
“I haven’t quite solved that particular problem yet, but you certainly don’t need to concern yourself with it.”
“Oh, but I do.  Now that I know you, I can’t leave you here.  You’ll be removed from the property soon enough and with no people to come for you or to return to...well, I couldn’t stand by and see that happen.  My conscience would not allow it.”
“I could find work.”
“Out here?  The only spot in town that would hire you is a house of ill-repute.  Unless you plan to walk to Fort Worth, and even then there aren’t a lot of...look, I bet you know how to mend things?  Cook some?  Clean?”
“Of course.”
“I would offer you a job in that respect, but towns are small and people talk.  If I take you on as a single woman to a ranch with six men about, people may think something improper was going on and that would affect business.”
“I’m not your responsibility, Mr. Mulder.”
“All my friends just call me Mulder.  You might not be my responsibility, but I happen to like you.”
“You don’t even know me.”
“I know you’re smart and you’re kind and I enjoy speaking with you.  And I know you don’t deserve to be put out on the street with nowhere to go and no people to turn to.”
She looks down and away from him and he moves his hand out to lift her chin, but thinks better of it and doesn’t touch her.  He knows horses a lot better than he knows people, and hardly knows a thing about women, but she reminds him of a spooked colt and he doesn’t want to overwhelm her and cause her to retreat.  Horses will hurt themselves out of fear, and she just might do the same.
“Think of it as a business arrangement,” he says.  “You will be in charge of the household duties, and if you ever decide you’d like to leave, I will be sure you’ll go with the value of this land in your pocket.”
“Cooking, cleaning, mending,” she mumbles.  “What else might you be expecting?”
“I’m not looking for sport, if that’s what you’re thinking.  I told you, there’s a house in town and If it was sport I was after, there are certainly far cheaper alternatives.  Excuse me for being blunt.”
“No, I appreciate your honesty.”
“You can trust me.”
“I’d like to believe that.”  With her head still lowered, she reaches up and brushes the side of her hand across her eye.  “What if one day you find a woman you actually wish to marry?  Start a family.  What would happen then?”
“You don’t have to worry about that.  I have a singular focus and nothing else matters to me.  But, if you should wish to marry, one day-”
“I won’t,” she says quickly, and firmly, shaking her head down at the floor.  “I do not wish to marry again.  I mean...aside from what you’re proposing.”
“Is that a yes?”
“You would really do all of this for a bit of land?”
“It’s good land.”  He pauses and twists his lips for a moment or two.  “But, as I’ve told you, it’s not just for the land.”
She finally glances up at him, but then quickly looks away again.
“Do you believe in fate?” he asks.
“I believe God has a plan for everyone.”  Her brows furrow.  “But, fate?  Logically, I would have to say no.”
“One of my horses threw a shoe today.  I wasn’t supposed to go into town this morning, and yet I did.  If Faithful Jenny hadn’t thrown that shoe, I wouldn’t have been in town and I wouldn’t have found out about your husband.  If I hadn’t found out about your husband, I wouldn’t have ridden out here.  If I wouldn’t have ridden out here, I wouldn’t have met you.”
“But, if you weren’t away on business, you could have had this land six months ago, as you said.”
“Exactly my point.  If I had purchased this plot six months ago, you never would’ve shown up here.  I think this is meant to be.  I think this is fate.”
“I don’t know about that, but...may I have a day to think this over?”
“Of course you may.  And please, let me take you away from here.  There are coyotes and bears that are apt to prowl around at night and this door doesn’t look very stable.  Not to mention the drifters that pass through and the Indians that roam about, though they won’t usually do you any harm unless provoked.  Still, I’d feel better if you’d come with me now.”
“Wouldn’t that look improper?” she asks, and her brow quirks again, only this time it feels a little more playful.
“Yes, Ma’am, it would, if I were to bring you home.  I was planning on setting you up in town.”
“Surely not to the house of ill-repute?”
He smiles, glad that she’s in good enough humor to engage in a bit of banter.  “John Byers and his wife Susannah operate the mercantile in town.  They also have extra room since their boy, Franklin, has gone off to school.  When I tell you that Susannah would be delighted for a lady friend, it might be an understatement.”
“If I leave with you, what if Mr. Skinner shows up?”
“I’ll handle Skinner.”
Leaving with this stranger will not be the most rash thing she’s ever done, but it will be high on the list amongst the impetuous things she has done in her life.  There’s something about him though that calms her insecurities and makes her feel like she can trust him.  Besides, there really doesn’t seem to be any other option except to sit and wait to be evicted.
“Bring with you whatever you might need for a short time,” he tells her.  “We can come back with a cart for anything else.”
But, there is nothing to come back for once she packs her nightgown, her bible, a tin cup, a broken hair comb, and a deerskin blanket into a burlap sack she’s been toting for the last few years.  He looks at the sack and then at her and around the small sod house as if he’s waiting for more possessions to magically present themselves.
“This is everything I have,” she tells him.
“Alright then.”  He nods and puts his hat back on.
His horse is very fine looking.  Yellow, with a white mane.  It whinnies when it sees him and he scratches it under the chin and rubs its nose.  For a moment, it almost looks as though they’re holding a private conversation, with the horse nodding and whinnying and Mulder whispering softly to it.  The horse scrapes a front hoof into the dirt and Mulder pats it gently on the shoulder.
“This is Blondie,” he says, smiling as he turns to her.  “I was letting her know to be on her best behavior while you’re on her back.  Do you ride?”
“I’ve ridden some when I was younger.  I can walk, though.”
“We have to cross a creek up a bit and you’ll be safer and drier up here.  Don’t worry, she’s nice and gentle.  I’ll lead her.  All you have to worry about is sitting straight and not falling off.”
“And getting up.”  She eyes the stirrups on the saddle and estimates they’re at least as high as her shoulders.
Mulder chuckles and takes the sack from her.  She notes the consideration he takes in placing it down on a patch of grass a few feet away and doesn’t drop it in the dirt.  He comes back very close to the horse’s side and lunges forward a bit and slaps his knee.
“Go on and grab the saddle horn with your left hand and step on up with your left foot.  You may have to lift your skirts a bit to throw your leg on over.”
It takes her three starts to gain the momentum to hoist herself up.  She does what he tells her to though and gathers her skirts up.  She knows she should be embarrassed by the holes in her shoes and that she has no stockings, but she lost the ability to care about such things a long time ago.
“Well done,” he says, and then passes the sack up to her.  “I’m going to adjust these stirrups to fit and we’ll be on our way.”
He works the buckles and straps swiftly and expertly and apologizes for touching her ankle when her foot momentarily gets in the way.  After he’s done, he brings the reins down over the horse’s head and turns it away from the house.  Katherine realizes, once they’re some ways away, that she never even had the thought of turning back for a last look.
He tells her about the potential he sees in the land as they walk.  He tells her about the corral he’d like to put up and how he would like to expand his business of training horses.
“You’re not from here,” she says at one point when he’s lost in his rambling.
“No, I grew up back east.  Massachusetts.”
“How did you come to be so interested in horses?”
“Hand down that sack and hold on tight here, we’ll be crossing the creek and the horse could slip.”
She gives him her burlap bag and holds firm to the horn of the saddle.  He throws the sack over one shoulder and guides the horse towards a small embankment and then tests the footing before they cross.  She’s barely jostled by it.  He stomps his boots once they’re back on dry land and hands the sack back up to her.
“That’s my girl,” he says, patting the horse lightly on the neck.  The horse snorts and its ears twitch.  “That creek was the dividing line of our properties.”
“Perhaps not for long.”
“Hopefully.”
The faint aroma of fire is in the air and she can see a thin curl of grey smoke in the distance.  She sees Mr. Mulder breathe deep and then smile broadly.
“Looks like Melvin has noon dinner on the stove,” he says.  “We’ll eat before we head into town.”
She doesn’t tell him, but she hasn’t eaten for almost three days.  The pump behind the house gave plenty of water, but their food stock was depleted even before her late husband left last Saturday.  She was able to boil some dandelions for a couple of days, but quickly ran out of matchsticks.  Her stomach clenches and her mouth waters at the thought of food.
“So, you want to know how I came by the horse business,” he says.
“Mmhm,” she murmurs.
“When I was five years of age, there was a cholera outbreak in Boston.  My parents, in their wisdom, felt that the city was unsafe for their children and they sent us away to live with my father’s dowager aunt at her country estate.”
“Was that difficult?  Being away from your parents?”
“Not at all, actually.  Auntie was a great lover of the outdoors and of children.  She cared for my sister and I like we were her own, spoiled us as though we were as well.  She gave me a little pony with a little cart for my birthday and that’s where it started, I suppose.”
“What happened when you went back to Boston?”
“Ah, well.  I didn’t.”
“You didn’t?”
“The cholera took my mother.  My father was not as equipped to care for children as Auntie was.  He allowed my aunt to adopt us and then he eventually remarried and I have a younger stepbrother named Jeffrey who I don’t know much about except that he’s probably of the age to start college soon enough.”
“And what about your sister?”
“Her name was Samantha.”
“Was?  Oh.  I’m sorry to have-”
“You do not have to apologize.”  He stops the horse and looks up at her.  “It was a long time ago.  She was eight when she passed on.  Smallpox.  She loved horses even more than I do.  Blondie was actually her horse.  Of course, she was a bitty little filly at the time, but Sam made me promise to take care of her, and I have.  She’s been with me nigh on thirteen years now.”
Katherine doesn’t know what to say to this.  The small smile Mulder gives her after he stroke’s the horse’s cheek is a sad one.  It’s a painful reminder of the grief she also carries that she’s never spoken so freely about.  She’s never spoken about it at all, in fact, and she can’t ever see a time when she will be able to.
The rest of the journey to the ranch is in silence.

Reunion- Ch 2: alstroemeria (Drake x MC TRRAU FanFic)
Tumblr media
Hello! I am so excited to show you guys the second chapter to Reunion!
I’m sorry this took sooooooo long to upload. My personal life has been super hectic lately, and I haven’t had time to really write!
(Drake, Liam, Hana, Maxwell and any other The Royal Romance characters belong to Pixelberry! Katherine Delacroix belongs to me!)
Series Overview: Reunion is a short series about Drake Walker and Katherine Delacroix, along with their friends, Maxwell, Hana and Liam. In this series, we see the gang at a high school reunion, five years after they’ve graduated. There will be flash backs, taking place up to nine years ago (the start of high school) up to when they graduate. You’ll get to see how the gang came together, and how they fell apart, only to come back together, and the main focus is how Drake and Katherine come back to each other after years apart.
All chapters of this series are named after flowers, with certain meanings. This chapter is named “alstroemeria”. It has meaning of friendship, love, strength and devotion. They're often thought to represent mutual support. And the ability to help each other through the trials and tribulations of life. This chapter, it flashes back to where the group of five became friends.

Katherine and Hana spent the rest of their first day back after five years in Cordornia preparing for the next night. They tried to plan out just how long they would stay and who they would talk too if those people showed up.
“Hana, are you really sure we should be there that long? I feel like two hours is more than enough time to say hi, have a drink and get the fuck out of there.” Katherine complained as she fished for her pajamas in her suitcase.
“We came all the way here for this reunion, we might as well stay longer than two hours; possibly even the whole time, Kat.” Hana said, a small chuckle escaping her lips. “Besides don’t you wanna see Olivia again?”
“I don’t really want to see much of anyone to be honest, Hana. I’d rather go get a couple drinks and maybe say hi to Olivia, if she even shows up and then I want to bounce.” The truth was, she did miss Olivia and all the fun nights the three had during junior and senior year, she just wasn't going to admit it.
Hana shook her head and continued to put away her clothes in the dresser that they shared in the room as Katherine changed into her pajamas. “Should we order room service?”
“I think a better question is, can we order alcohol?” Hannah laughed.
-
The next day as Katherine was preparing herself mentally, her mind wandered back to sophomore year of high school, the year that Hana and her became friends with a few others who soon had become the closest thing to family she had had in a long time. Family, she sadly remembered, that barely talked to her or Hana anymore.
8 years ago
Liam and Drake were two of the most popular boys at the high school. Both were star football players and in the winter, star basketball players. A lot of the girls tried their best to get the boys to notice them, but sadly none of their efforts worked. It wasn’t until one Saturday in detention that they met two other girls who would soon become their best friends, as well as another man who was known for his shenanigans.
“Alright, this is Saturday detention. All of you know why you are here. Your assignment for today is to write an 1000 word essay on how you recognize that your actions have consequences. I will be in my office which is just down the hall and I will come check on you periodically to make sure you are writing quietly. Once the bell rings at 3 o’clock, you’ll be dismissed and can go home for the day.” Dean Constantine told the teenagers, a strict tone in his voice.
All of the students rolled their eyes but complied nonetheless. After about an hour of trying to focus on anything other than the assignment, a tall boy with sandy brown hair finally spoke, breaking the silence that hung in the room.
“All right, I’m kind of over the silence. Not sure if anyone else is, but hey guys, I’m Maxwell. I’m in here because I made a stink bomb in science class and the teachers weren’t so happy about it and neither were the other students.” He smiled triumphantly as if he was proud.
“That was you? I’ll never be able to get that smell out of my nose. Good job.” Katherine smiled. “I’m Katherine and I’m here because Hana,” she paused and pointed to Hana who sat next to her. “and I decided to go off campus for lunch and they found out and caught us when we were coming back.” She looked at the two boys sitting side-by-side a few rows behind them in the classroom. “What about you two?”
“Someone on the junior varsity team was giving me some lip, so, I punched him in the lip.” The darker haired boy said, holding up his hand to show the bruises on his knuckles. Katherine eyed him, wondering how strong he was.
“I got in trouble because I tried to break up the fight but the coach thought I had helped start it, so thanks to this one I am in yet another Saturday detention.” He playfully shoved his friend.
“Oh please, Liam. You would’ve been here regardless just because your dad makes you come here.” Drake laughed.
“Who’s your dad?” Hana asked.
“Well as Drake so helpfully mentioned, my dad would put me in Saturday detention regardless because it’s his way of keeping an eye on me. My father is the dean of the school, Dean Constantine.” Liam said, a somber look on his face.
“No shit, are you serious?!” Katherine asked, her eyes wide.
“Sadly.” Liam replied, expression flat.
“So what you’re saying is that you can leave whenever you want because you’re just gonna be here next Saturday anyway? Why are you here then?”
“Let’s just say it would be hell at home if I ditched.” Liam grimaced.
“And what would he do to us if we just got up and left?” Katherine asked, Hana giggling next to her.
“He probably would just give you guys another Saturday detention to be honest. Most of the students here never do anything that would require suspension or expulsion.” Drake explained.
“I think it would be wise if you guys just got through this day and not provoke the beast.” Maxwell chimed in, not wanting to get into any more trouble, as he was in Saturday detention almost as often as Liam.
“Really? Because I say that when it gets to lunch time we all sneak out, get past him and then ditch this place and go to the beach or something.”
“Katherine as much as I love that idea I really don’t wanna have another Saturday detention. My parents would literally kill me.” Hannah said with a frown on her face.
Katherine didn’t much care what happened to her but she did care what happened to her best friend, so, even though it frustrated her and as much as she wanted to leave this hellhole, she nodded, agreeing, before saying “You’re right, Hana, we should probably just stick it out and then go back to my house.” She looked at the three men surrounding them. “I know we just all met each other but you guys are welcome to come with us to my house afterwards. My grandma is a nurse and she works mostly night shifts so she’ll be gone, meaning we can raid the liquor cabinet.” Last year, Katherine would have never asked this to anyone besides Hana. Becoming friends with Hana had made her enjoy life again, made her want to make friends again.
“You drink?” Liam asked, sincerely.
“Usually Hana and I will sneak a couple drinks sometimes but we don’t usually drink.”
“Well if your grandma has some whiskey, I’d be down.” Drake said. “My old man, before he passed, would drink whiskey all the time. Sometimes he would let me have a little sip. I always told myself once I was old enough I have glass in his honor.”
Katherine’s felt tugs on her heart strings. She felt for Drake since, she too, knew the pain of losing a parent. The difference is that she lost both of hers. Though she didn’t really know him so she didn’t know if his mom was still in the picture.
“All I know is is that I don’t want to deal with my brother when I get home so I'm gonna go where you go, Katherine.” Maxwell said, saluting her as if she was the group’s leader.
“And then there was one.” Katherine smiled at Liam.
“Well I have nothing better to do and it’s better than going home to my dad who's always in a bad mood, so, sure I’m down.” Liam smiled softly, a hint of sadness showing before he quickly looked away, hiding his emotions.
“All right, it’s settled then. After we get out of here we will follow Katherine back to her place and we’ll have a good time.” Hans said, clapping in her hands in excitement.
As soon as 3 o’clock came around and the bell dismissed them, Katherine took off running as soon as she was out the door, the rest running close behind her. ”Come on guys, what are you? A bunch of snails?” Katherine laughed as she ran on ahead.
Drake and Liam quickly caught up to her. “You wish we were snails. Not our problem you decided to choose a race between two star football players.” Drake smirked. Maxwell caught up to them a minute later saying “And I’m on the track team!”
Katherine slowed down matching Hana’s pace, chuckling. “Jokes on them, they don’t know where I live.” The girls laughed when the men came to a stop, wondering where they were going. Katherine then proceeded to show them the rest of the way to the house and instead of running they walked.
Present
“Hey, Kat, are you okay?” Hana’s voice snapped Katherine out of her memories. She turned her head and looked at her best friend in the entire world, who had a worried look on her face.
“I’m just having a little anxiety about tonight. What am I going to say to him if he shows up?” Katherine said, panic showing on her face. If he showed up, she didn’t know what she would do. Katherine wasn’t sure if she was ready to face the reality of what happened to them.
“I think you’ll know when the time comes. I can’t tell you what to say, it wouldn’t be authentic.” Hana gave her a small smile. “Now come on, it’s time to put on your make up and get dressed!” Katherine threw a pillow at her, making both of them laugh.
“Okay. Let’s do this.” She said, rising from the bed and walking to the bathroom to start her make-up. Katherine wasn’t sure how tonight would go, but she couldn’t run anymore. She had to finally face him.

Nothing in Particular Update #1
Hello, hello!! It’s been a really long time since I’ve written an update for this story! (this is a real update btw, forget the “first” one I had) To be honest, I haven’t been able to work on this story as much as I would like, being busy with classes and... well just life in general. (what I mean by this is that Shadow and Bone was released on Netflix) But! I do have some excerpts I wanted to put out there as well as some overall changes to the story.
Before I start: here’s the actual link to the story synopsis/characters!
TAGLIST (ask to be +/-): @wannabeauthorzofija @a-completely-normal-girl @baguettethebooklover @corkytheguar @writeherewaiting @raenawrites
STORY CHANGES/IDEAS:
First off: I had to rewrite 30,000 words and basically turn it into 10,000. The first draft was icky, but I turned it into something I really enjoy! This is a sign that writing is always worth it!!
I added in a couple of characters! I was starting to feel like the story might not have been balanced enough. Luckily, the muse struck me and I created Mars and Theo! Mars is a lovely (and enigmatic) older woman that Ray meets at a bird sanctuary and Theo is a new friend of Lonan’s.
There wasn’t much action in the beginning of the story, so I wrote a confrontation between Jude’s friends and another person that Ray spies on. This is how she meets Jude, and I am in lovvve.
The timeline for the entire story might be a little bit longer than I intended! I went into this project thinking it might only take place over a month, but in order for Ray’s mental health journey to be realistic, I’m going to shoot for an entire school year (around six-seven months). Honestly, I’m just happy I get to write a Halloween scene. As for the word count total HAHA I have no clue what that will look like.
I think Lonan will be a bit of a back-burner character! At first, I was a little wary of this decision since he’s my favorite, but I think it would be very exciting to have Ray hype him up before he ever appears in the story. That way, the reader sort of starts to think about him in one way, yet he might be completely different when he finally shows up...??
Chapter titles are one of my favorite things about this story. Also! I am a huge fan of short chapters! They move the story right along.
I prefer to write slower and use other projects to balance out this one when I get a little tired of it. Over the last month or so, I’ve gotten really into short story writing again! This has been really helpful in working on my specificity and pretty prose. Even though the short stories don’t contribute to Nothing in Particular, I’ve been taking a lot of what I’m learning and applying it!
EXCERPTS (UNDER THE CUT)
CHAPTER ONE: THE SPY
#1
During the summer between my sophomore and junior year, Lonan Herrings packed me into his Dad’s repainted Chevrolet, left his name sharp on his mother’s tongue, and drove to New York City at six in the morning. For the first time since we’d become friends, jealousy weighed our silence. He buzzed across the highway, even though we knew his mother had no intention of finding us.
#2
“Which animal would I be,” he asked, “if I left tomorrow and lived in the forest?”
“Why would you want to do that?” I smiled even though I knew he was probably serious.
His shoulders squared and he looked out his window. Two men in the next car shouted at each other, their windows down. Something about a mortgage. “You would come with me, of course.” He turned to me. “Which animal gets along best with a doe?”
#3
I shut my eyes to snap the cold. It might have been the fact that, most times, his gentle voice pulled ragged words from his throat, as if he had just stepped out of the rain after standing in it for hours. It might have been the way he cupped the rim of a camera with humble demure. I was never afraid to tell him anything in the patience that bled from him. His eyes were milky blue and he wore an olive jacket covered in pins that kept strangers interested. Since he seemed like he felt out of place most times, I never did. We were a grade apart; our friendship bloomed late. So long as I had a friend at all, I didn’t care how we’d met.
“You would be a blue jay,” I decided. For only a second, I’d been worried that I offended him, until his mouth curved to one side and he laughed softly, as though he wasn’t sure he was allowed. His head hovered over the steering wheel. A patch of freckles absently creeped over the bridge of his nose like winter weeds.
This first chapter is a flashback to exactly a year before the second chapter takes place! After an argument with his mom, Lonan drives out of state with Ray. I plan for it to be all we see of Lonan (in the present) up until the halfway point of the story.
CHAPTER TWO: I WAS QUIET
#1
I was a firm believer that the best art was created when the artist was alone, angry, or depressed.
After Lonan secured his train ticket to New York, I was surprised to find that I became none of these things. We buried a time capsule, painted his walls cerulean, and drove two-hundred miles without a word to anyone. Some of my most colorful memories were unplanned in the beginning.
#2
Katherine Herrings’ bakery loitered over the coast of town, sheltered in pitch crags and shallow tide pools congested with cigarettes. I often ate lunch on the deck on my break. She was the only person I knew who – after everything her nephew had said – didn’t make him the first topic of our conversations.
An indie rock song that I recognized buzzed from a radio below me. I pulled my tablet screen down and pushed my chair out so the plastic legs kicked up and scratched the backs of my legs.  Slowly, I peered between my ankles, through the patio boards, and into the boat lodge below. Pumpkin-red hair plastered to my forehead in the heat that clung to the late days of September. Waves bubbled and crashed, peanut oil dripped from hot dog buns, and muffled gossip chirped like a family of cicadas. I bit my tongue at the bitter smoke that warped the wind.
#3
Jude laughed then, and her shoulders tipped, haughty. Waves hissed in her silence as the lights in the kitchen behind Katherine flickered. Her mouth opened slightly at the ring of dishes and laughter that danced with each other inside. A moment passed before she took a wide step back.
Together, her accomplices waltzed after her as she ran down the pavement, flecking sand until the night’s blue air gulped their outlines. Katherine beat a towel against the patio leg, then she slid and locked the door. Frogs jeered in the silence that pervaded the sea.
I whispered the name back to myself so I wouldn’t forget it. Jude Ahuja. I took a sip of ginger ale, and she buzzed on my lips.
The story cuts to Ray’s senior year of high school. Summer has just ended, Lonan has left for college, and her camera is broken. Jude is a bit like a character out of a film to her, and she wishes she could know more about her after witnessing a loud argument with Katherine Herrings, Lonan’s aunt.
CHAPTER THREE: PEOPLE-WATCHING
#1
Early into our friendship, I’d learned this patience. The first time he brought me to Sugarfell, he told me that all of the paths led back to the same place. As long as you played the game, you were guaranteed a prize. He didn’t speak much, but I knew he wasn’t a very good liar.
Less than an hour passed when I was met with silence. I crept up and down the same path four times. Each step sent a shock through my legs to my chest. The sun hadn’t risen to the highest point in the sky, still glimmering through tree branches in golden fractals, pulling on static darkness.
#2
“Are you crying?” he asked.
I shook my head fast. “No.” My voice barely reached a whisper. It was a lot deeper than normal.
He puckered his lips as though I had offended him. “But you were about to.”
“You said that all the paths lead back to one another.” I stood up from the jagged stump and shuffled through the leaves until the tips of our shoes were inches apart. “I knew you’d come back. And you did.”
#3
When I turned back, sore curiosity teased the emerald in Lonan’s eyes.
“Do you ever people-watch?” he asked softly.
This chapter is another really short chapter that I’m ultimately not sure I’m going to keep! I sort of included it by accident while Ray was riding her bike to the forest, but I ended up really liking it as a bridge into the next scene. Hopefully, I find I way to make it fit!!
CHAPTER FOUR: SUGAR-COATED
#1
Years with Lonan had prepared me for being alone. If you spend any long amount of time with someone, you’ll become a thief to their behaviors. Lonan observed too much. If I stared long enough, trees began to replace all of the people we’d ever seen. Oaks with roots that serpentined the ground like children splashing in the bay, pines with needles like spindly old hands, maples with hollows like watchful eyes.
#2
I did remember, but I couldn’t then. Blood gushed too close to his eyelid and dripped down his cheek like tears. There was a grace period in my life – likely when I was a newborn – when I couldn’t picture what my blood would look like on the light side of my skin.
And this is where I’ll leave off on the excerpts for now! I’ve been really focused on taking my time and setting things up before the next chapter, which is going to have lots more action in it. Things are going to start picking up again, so I’m really excited for that!
Thanks for reading if you made it this far :)

Author's note: Very short chapters will be included which will give the readers a small glimpse/glance in the character's history about Christmas.
Chapter 1 and 2 already published!!!
Tagging: @choicesficwriterscreations ; ... [whoever wants to join, please let me know]
Tumblr media
"Merry Christmas, Katherine!"
"Merry Christmas, Ava!"
Two young teenagers were giggling in a decorated living room as they exchanged their presents. The christmas tree glimmers in the living room with more lights and various ornaments. Greens and reds are in abundance, gold, and silver flashing here and there, adding opulence and brightness. Joyful music played around in the streets of New Mexico. The little mangenta haired girl gasped as she unwrapped her present and so did the other girl.
"Oh Ava, you got me..."
"...the same present I got for you!! What a coincidence? We know eachother too well, Katherine.", Ava answered to Katherine and both girls giggled again while giving eachother a hug.
"Ava, you're my childhood friend, like a sister and so special to me.", young Katherine replied.
A man and woman appeared in the room, wearing white coats and were talking to eachother in hushed voices. Both were heading towards the front door of the house until Katherine shouted from the living room.
"Mom, Dad, where are you going?"
"To the hospital, honey. Some emergency came up, so I'm heading for work and your Dad is coming with me. He forgot some paperwork to finish.", the woman answered while the man agreed to her.
"But it's Christmas! Can't another neurosurgeon or whatever doctor do this? I want to celebrate with you two and Ava together. Her parents might be coming over too.", Katherine pleased her parents and ran to them to give them a hug. "Please stay!"
"Duty calls, darling. You can celebrate with Ava for now, your mother and I are doctors and duty comes first and family on second place. You have to understand that, when you grow up to follow our footsteps, you'll see that too.", her father explained her daughter and planted a kiss on her cheek. "One day, you and Ava will become successful doctors like us."
Before Katherine became a nighthunter, she was a sweet girl who was doing her medical studies, because both of her parents wanted her to step into their footsteps and to become a successful doctor. She grew up in New-Mexico with her childhood friend, Ava. One summer Katherine convinced her to go camping with her in the dark without even telling their parents and by that, a terrible incident happend. Ava got killed by a supernatural beast while Katherine survived, but she swore revenge. She never went back to her home or college and trained enough to become a nighthunter. She tracked that beast down for days and finally was able to kill it. She may have succeded, but she lost the most important person and best friend of her life. She became lonely, because she thinks Ava's death was her fault. Why did she had to convince Ava to go outside in the dark, she always thought. From that day on, she decided to live alone and to fight against the evil creatures of the night. By time she gained a lot of knowledge, experience and money, but she will always feel the pain of losing someone close.
She will never forget Ava and what happened to her. The last Christmas celebration she has, was with her and for her there's no meaning to celebrate it again.

SixVengers - The Beginning (Fic 1) Chapter 5
Everyone sat in silence, not knowing what to do. Nobody expected to be here because of the literal end of the world. Especially by the hands of someone they’ve never heard of.
“Who is this Lord Henry? I’ve never heard of him and by the looks of everyone else’s faces here, it doesn’t seem like they know who that is either, Director.” Jane said from her seat, a gentle smile on her face.
“I agree with Captain ‘Been Frozen For Too Long’. I’ve never heard of this guy but like, isn’t Henry a common English name?” That question was asked by Boleyn which gained nods of agreement from Cleves, Howard and Parr.
Meutas sighed and pointed towards a screen on the wall opposite of windows and the PowerPoint started. Some numbers and calculations could be seen but nobody knew what to make out of them.
“We found an unusual amount of radiation coming from outside of our solar system a few months ago and we worked on it in secret with many cosmic agencies around the world. However, last week, we registered a large cluster of them around the London area which made us believe that something is definitely not right as none of the areas around the world have experienced anything like that. In fact, “ here Meutas brought up two maps of the world. One had many dots across the continents whilst the other map had most of them centred around England, especially London, “most of the sites where this radiation was recorded, moved towards London and have since disappeared from their previous positions.”
“We have reached out to our contact in space…” Started Lee but was quickly interrupted by Parr.
“Contact in space? I didn’t know there were any humans in space or anythingthing…”
“There is a very limited number of them but thankfully, they are unknown to most of the world, Parr. Now as I was saying, our contact in space, Captain Castillo told us something concerning - a space villain named Lord Henry, was amassing an army and took it towards Earth. Nobody in the universe acted on that as he wasn’t doing anything dangerous yet.”
It was at this point when Agent Blount picked up the explanation.
“By our calculations and from what Castillo gave us, we can assume with 98.35% accuracy that tomorrow at 2 PM, Lord Henry will start an attack on London. We do not know his motives yet but we suspect that he plans to enslave Earth and the humans there.”
“So you knew about it for how long?” Inquired Boleyn, hoping she would not get an answer that would disappoint her.
“4 days. We already contacted most of the high ranking officials like The Queen and Prime Minister who have already evacuated from the city. This is the same with many other influential figures.” Said Meutas in a calm yet strict voice. This only made Aragon angry.
“You knew about all of this for 4 days and I was never informed about it, Director? I’m your second-highest-ranking agent. I’M ABOVE IN RANK THAN THOSE THREE! ” The Spanish agent ranted, getting up from her seat and pointing towards the other agents. "All those years ago I agreed to work with you, Meutas, but I never thought something like that would be kept from me."
"Not to get political or anything but it seems like you know, common people like not very important ones, weren't informed either. I'm pretty sure I heard nothing about ' alien attack on London' on Twitter or Insta." Said Katherine and yet again, everyone looked towards her.
"The kid has a point. Nobody knows that it's happening. Any explanation as to why you would hide something that risks the lives of millions of people, Director. " Said Anne, her hands slowly turning into a lime colour. Jane gulped visibly seeing that.
“We are making sure that there is no unnecessary panic…”
“CUT THE CRAP MEUTAS! THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE IN THIS CITY THAT COULD GET INJURED OR DIE TOMORROW” Anne Boleyn was angry now. Her skin was now of an emerald colour. If someone didn’t do something soon, she could transform into Hulk. Thankfully, Parr was already working on that.
She stood up from her chair and went behind Boleyn, putting her hand on the other woman’s shoulder and looking towards Meutas.
“I don’t think you can give any excuses for your behaviour, Director. Dr Boleyn here is right - people might die tomorrow because neither you nor the government did anything about it. Let’s settle on this deal,” The young woman said as she took out her phone and turned the screen towards the rest of the room. “Here I have a message addressed to my PR team about how the Director of T.O.W.E.R. has just informed me that there is an upcoming attack on the capital and one of the most important cities in the world but for some strange reason nobody seemed to think that they should’ve informed the public. So you will either do it yourself, or I will click send and my team will make sure that the world knows what’s happening.”
“You can’t do that, Parr. This is serious and sensitive information that cannot get out to the public.” Meutas got up from her seat and eyed the younger woman.
“You’re wrong Director, she can do that. You never asked us to not reveal the information we learned here nor gave us any document to sign thus we would not be breaking any agreements by bringing this information up to the public.” Anna smirked with a raised eyebrow. Anne started turning back to her normal skin colour seeing how the situation was turning out.
The Director of the T.O.W.E.R. looked towards all the superwomen in the room and sighed, seeing only Seymour not glaring nor looking smugly at her. Parr held her phone, waiting for an answer, both Aragon and Boleyn looked frustrated, Cleves was watching it all with a smirk and Howard was observing everything with a small frown on her young face.
“Very well... I will contact the government and inform them that it will be best that most of London will be evacuated. However, I cannot let any of you go back to your homes tonight as we don’t want you split up in case of an attack. So any family you have will have to move out without you for the time being.” Meutas said and got mostly nods as a response, most of the women there didn’t have family in London thus would not have to do anything about it and staying together would allow them for better reaction time should the attacks start earlier.
“Um… sorry but I told my mum that I would be back tonight sooo… I think you will have to ask for her permission for me to be her, Director.” Said Katherine timidly.
“I don’t think you should ask your mother for permission to save the world kid.” Chuckled Lee, showing for the first time today that she had a sense of humour.
“It’s the law for her to give me permission.”
“What? How old are you?” Asked Meutas, not liking how this was going.
“...” Katherine looked around the room with lips pulled tight “... 15 but 16 in 2 months!” She said with an excited smile.
Everyone looked shocked and Aragon was the first one to break the uncomfortable silence.
“MEUTAS WHY DID YOU BRING A LITERAL CHILD INTO THIS?!” She exclaimed and Katherine stepped back as if Agent Aragon would do something to her.
“I didn’t know! She never told me her age! Nor her real name for that matter!” The Director looked towards the teenager whilst saying that and Katherine visibly gulped.
“Ha… my name you say… hehe, so it is Katherine but Howard is my father’s surname. I go by my mother’s name Culpeper in real life. So Katherine Culpeper I guess.” She said, laughing weekly at that.
“Why did you lie to us then? About your name?” Salinas asked, looking at the kid in front of her with a hard gaze.
“I panicked! I didn’t know if I should give my real name or something fake so I went in the middle? Also, it is still kind of my name, just not legally I guess.”
“Okay, I know that we have a kid among us but could we please go over a plan for tomorrow’s battle please?” Captain Jane Seymour spoke for the first time. Everyone looked towards each other but they took their seats nonetheless, grumbling about a teenager on the team while Anna gave Katherine thumbs up and a smirk.

Part 4 Here
SONG: Finesse by Bruno Mars & Cardi B
Tumblr media
Katherine had slept pretty well that night, in her new big bed. She had actually slept into the morning, for the first time in years. Her bed was surely a mess, and she probably had the worst bed head of her life. But for the first time in what felt like forever, she felt rested.
A soft humming sound started in her throat, as she rolled over in the bed, hearing her phone buzz against the nightstand. She stretched her arm out, blindly smacking her hand around before she finally felt her phone. One of her eyes slowly peeled itself open, just enough to look at her phone.
10 text messages, and 2 missed calls.
It was then that she finally looked at the time, both of her eyes snapping open. It was nearly eleven in the morning, far longer than she’d ever slept in before.
“Shit!”
She fell out of the bed with a loud plop, scurrying to get to the bathroom and start her day. As she turned the shower on, she went through her text messages.
Sage 7:46am ‘GOOD MORNING! Let me take Skadi out for a walk, then let me know when someone will come get me!’
Sage 8:03 ‘Skadi tried to drag me into the lake.’
Sage 8:30 ‘KATIE ARE YOU UP?’
Bucky 8:32 ‘Good morning, Katherine. I came to check on you, but you were so peacefully sound asleep.. I thought I’d just let you rest. I have meetings starting at 9, and hopefully will have a lunch break around noon. I hope you sleep well, and I’ll see you later (:’
Sage 9:10 ‘I’m ready whenever you are’
Sage 9:30 ‘…are you alive?’
Sage 9:47 ‘Did something happen..?’
9:52 Missed phone call, Sage
Sage 10:03 ‘I’m stopping by your house, or I guess your old house, grabbing a couple of things. Your dad isn’t here..’
10:13 Missed phone call, Sage
Sage 10:15 ‘Did I possibly steal someone’s phone number, because you left the letter on your desk? Yes, yes I did.’
Bucky 10:25 ‘Sage texted me. Steve’s about to head over to get her.. I know you said she worries a lot, but she seems pretty antsy to not hear from you. I told her that you were asleep, and she didn’t seem to believe me..?’
Katherine let out a long huff of air as she began brushing her teeth, reading all of the text messages. Her eyes rolled, reading the ones from Sage. But when she saw the texts from Bucky, she smiled. She hummed softly, her fingers tapping away on the glass screen.
‘Everything’s fine, I promise!! Would you believe me if I said that I slept in?’
‘Good morning! I’m so sorry, I don’t ever sleep in like this. Thank you for being so kind! Don’t worry about Sage, it’s just very uncharacteristic of me, lol’
She sent the first text to Sage and the second to Bucky, as she moved around the bathroom, prepping to get into the shower. Just as she was about to step into the shower, Sage texted her back.
‘…What?’
‘I was preparing myself to fight a mob, just so you know..’
‘Also.. YOU DIDN'T TELL ME THAT STEVE WAS HOT!’
A rumble of a laugh passed Katherine’s lips, shaking her head as she quickly texted her back.
‘Lol I’m getting into the shower see you soon.’
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Katherine decided to try and leave her hair down for the day, realizing she hasn’t had that opportunity in such a long time. Her hair was always in a slick bun, or a braid for work. It had been long enough that she was a bit surprised to see that the strands reached right above her rear. She had a hard time getting herself ready, her eyes glued to the body she saw in the mirror.. Noticing every detail that she despised about herself. She wasn’t a petite woman, that was for sure. Her hips were wide, thighs jiggling as she moved. Her tummy had a bit of a pooch, sticking out over her jeans, enough for her to grab between her fingers to fiddle with. Stretch marks across her hips and abdomen, even her thighs and breasts, from frequent weight changes. She would at least give herself credit for having nice curves.
A sharp rap of knocks at her bedroom door snapped her out of the daze.
“Hold on!” Her voice echoed through the bathroom, her bare feet padding across the tile as she pulled a shirt over her head.
“My hands are full or I would just come in anyways!” Sages voice sounded from the other side of the door.
Her hands were full?
Katherine pulled the door open, a confused look on her face as not only Sage but Steve as well both walked into her room with a few boxes and shopping bags. She continued with her confused expression, a hand on her hip as she watched them set everything in the TV area.
“So, I know that you’re not a very materialistic person,” Sage started, opening a few boxes, “But I also know.. That was never really a choice.”
Katherine walked towards them, peering into the boxes, “Okay…”
“I may have let it slip, that you’re a bit of an artist..” Sage shot her an innocent look, “I grabbed everything from my place that you had, and Bucky sent Steve and I out to get you new art supplies.”
Katherine’s eyes shot up, looking between the two blondes. She was silent for a moment, not sure what she wanted to say. Steve let out a soft sigh, a smile on his lips as he helped Sage take everything out from the bags
“He had already fully intended on taking you shopping.. But after talking to Sage,” His eyes went to her, a smile on his lips, “We all agreed you could use the surprise.”
Katherine stood there, dumbfounded. It wasn’t unlike Sage to try and take care of her, that wasn’t anything new. But the fact that it was Bucky, as well as Steve.. She watched as the two began taking things out, her eyes looking at all of the things.
“I also got a few things for you to decorate your room with.” Sage spoke, looking around the room. “This is the perfect spot!”
Sage stood up with a handful of rectangular frames in her hands. She walked over towards the television, and began placing them on the wall, trying to figure out the best spot for them. Katherine watched her for a moment, trying to look at the photos.. She could practically feel her heart swell, realizing what the pictures were. One was of Katherine and Sage, around the time they met. They were both so young.. Another was the two of them, a bit older, with a huge mess of paint. They both had big grins plastered on their faces, though she knew that after that moment they cleaned it all up. Next was a photo of them from their High School graduation..
“I thought you could use a few personal touches.”
Katherine’s lips curved up into a sweet smile, “Thank you.. Both.” She turned her smile to Steve, who just simply nodded his head, returning the smile.
Sage hummed softly, as she stuck the photos to the wall, satisfied with her arrangement. She then went back to all of the things on the table, and began to move some stuff around. Soon, all three of them were going around the room, decorating. Sage had suggested putting music on, and Katherine didn’t argue. The girls were dancing around the room, having a great time.. Katherine didn’t even notice that Steve had been gone for about fifteen minutes.
“Ooh, don't we look good together?
There's a reason why they watch all night long..
Yeah, know we'll turn heads forever..
So tonight I'm gonna show you off!”
Sages voice sang the words happily, both girls laughing as they danced around. Katherine smiled, walking into her closet to hang up the last of her clothes.. There wasn’t much, but it was at least a little better now. Sage had brought the clothes that Katherine left at her house, wanting her to have better options. Katherine had gone deep into her walk in closet, the music flooding her ears, and didn’t have any idea that Steve was back.. And that there was someone else in the room as well.
“You must be him.” Sage smiled, putting her hand out, “It’s good to officially meet you.”
Bucky offered her a kind smile, shaking her hand, “You too.” He glanced around the room, raising an eyebrow, “It looks nice. Thank you for doing this..” He seemed like he had more to say.
Sage hummed softly, “No problem. I’m just thankful that you’re not a big meanie,” She chuckled a bit, before lowering her voice, “She would kill me for saying anything… But I feel like it’s my job.”
Bucky’s eyebrows furrowed on his face, listening intently. He could hear Katherine in the closet, humming along to the music. He wondered if she liked to sing.. But he was also very curious to know what Sage was about to tell him.
“I know way more about what you do, than she does.” Sage crossed her arms on her chest, looking directly to Bucky’s eyes, “She has no idea.. The reality of what she’s about to put herself in.”
Bucky nodded his head slowly, though his eyes narrowed a bit, “And just how do you think you know?”
Sage chuckled softly, proving his gaze ineffective, “Deputy Chief Alexandria Chambers.”
Bucky’s gaze softened, hearing the name. He looked to Steve, who simply nodded his head as if he already knew the information that was being revealed. He was confused.. How did she know her?
“She was my mother.”
Bucky swallowed a lump in his throat, “She was one of the best, that’s for damn sure.. I was very sorry to hear about her passing.”
Sage nodded her head slowly, “Thank you. She was always fair.. And I know that she was on your side of things. Well, you and your mob family.”
Bucky wasn’t exactly sure where this conversation was going, but he continued nonetheless, “I’m assuming that uhm..” He cleared his throat, “She made sure her daughter was well aware of the world she lived in.”
Sage nodded her head, “She was very thorough about it.” She seemed like she was about to say more, though a smile crept its was back onto her face when they could all hear Katherine’s voice.
“When I'm walkin' with you..
I watch the whole room change..
Baby, that's what you do..”
Katherine had absolutely no idea about the conversation that was taking place, as she hung up her clothes. If anyone had been paying close attention, they might have noticed the sweet smile that tugged on the corners of Bucky’s mouth. ‘She sounds wonderful..’
“Listen,” Sage looked to Bucky’s eyes, a serious expression on her face, “I just don’t want Katie to get caught in the crossfire of your world.” She let out a huff of air, “She deserves the best.. Even if she doesn’t think so herself.”
“No, my baby, don't play..
Blame it on my confidence..
Oh, blame it on your measurements..”
Steve walked over, grabbing the now empty bags. He was listening to Sage speak to Bucky, and he knew where she was going with her words.. Sage had told Steve quite a bit when they went shopping. She was quite the protective friend.. And for good reason. He glanced at Bucky, their eyes meeting for a moment. Bucky’s eyes shifted back towards Sage, and they watched each other for a moment, listening to Katherine sing. He put his hands on his hips, as the two of them shared a bit of a staring contest. Until Sages words broke the moment of silence between them.
“I will do anything for her.. Anything.” Sages eyes squinted, “I’m not trying to get on your bad side or anything.. I just want to make sure what your intentions are with her.”
Bucky watched Sage for another moment, and was starting to understand why she was interrogating him. “My intentions are what they’ve always been.. I intend on marrying Katherine someday.”
“But do you intend on loving her?” Sages words were sharp, and quite clear.
Bucky thought about those words, his eyes looking around the room. It’s not like he was heartless.. But love was never really on the table for him. Love was dangerous. It could be used against him.. Who would ever truly love a man like him anyways?
Sage shook her head, her eyes looking over the photos on the wall, “She deserves to be loved.. Taken care of.. And cherished.” Her lips curved downwards, “She hasn’t gotten much of that. Her mom died too soon, and her dad just became even more of a piece of shit.. Yet somehow, she’s still a ray of sunshine in this shitty world.. and I don’t want anything to diminish that.”
Steve cleared his throat, taking a few steps closer to them, “I can tell you that she’ll be well taken care of here, Sage.” He offered her a kind smile, before glancing at Bucky, “Even though everyone thinks that Buck is some scary monster.. A hard ass, who has no heart.. There’s a big ole teddy bear under that facade.. And I have a feeling that Katherine’s going to find him.”
Bucky glared at Steve, for saying such mushy words.. But, he could potentially be right.
Sage returned Steve’s smile, “I hope you’re right.. But I still want to know what Bucky’s thoughts are.”
Bucky took in a sharp breath, looking down at his shoes for a moment, trying to think over his words, “Steve’s right. Everyone does see me that way, and they’re not exactly wrong.” His eyes flicked up to Sage, “But I know how to be a gentle man, Sage. I would’ve never made a deal to marry someone, if I didn’t think I could… Be a decent husband.” He let out a soft breath, “I promise you that my intentions with Katherine are genuine. I will take care of her, and maybe we will grow to love each other.”
Sages lips curved up into a wide grin, and she brought her hands together, clapping them. “Well, alright then. Then I have a job for you.”
Both men’s facial expressions changed to one’s of confusion, looking between each other before turning their attention back to Sage.
“Katherine needs to change. She needs to learn that she deserves love.. And I want you to help me do that.”
Before Bucky could respond, the music suddenly stopped.
“Hey Steve, I was wondering if you-“
Katherine had come out of the closet, holding a clothing rod in both of her hands. Her eyes widened slightly, seeing that Bucky was standing there.. Her lips curved up into a sweet smile, their eyes locking. She felt her breath hitch in her throat, admiring his steel blue eyes.
“Hi.” Her voice came out soft, the grin on her face not faltering.
“Hey.” Bucky responded, his lips curving up to return the grin, “Uh, what happened?” He asked, pointing to the rod in her hands.
Katherine looked at it, then chuckled, “Fun fact, if you’re too short to reach something, just ask for help. Or you’ll end up taking down all of the clothes you just hung up.” Everyone in the room began chuckling, though Katherine’s cheeks tinted a light pink shade.
“I’m assuming you were about to ask for my help?” Steve finally asked, still chuckling a bit.
“Yeeaahhh..” Katherine chuckled softly, “It can wait until later..” She hummed for a moment, before looking between the three of them, “So.. What ‘cha guys up to?”
“Oh, I was just interrogating your new boyfriend, of course.” Sage grinned, sending Bucky a knowing look.
Katherine’s blush deepened, “Sage!” She scolded her, “We literally just met yesterday!”
Bucky’s lips turned up into a smirk, “Yeah, and I’m already introducing you to people as my girl.”
Sage raised an eyebrow, Steve tried to stifle a laugh. Katherine’s face was red as a beat, and thank god she didn’t have to come up with anything to say.. Because Annette knocked on the door, her warm smile peering into the room.
“Lunch is ready!” She announced, before motioning for everyone to follow her.
Bucky chuckled, sliding his hands into his pockets. His eyes watched as Sage grabbed Katherine’s hand, leading her out of the room. How cute. He couldn’t help the thought, seeing how she reacted to his words. Steve followed behind the girls, and Bucky went right behind him.
———
The next week went.. Well? Bucky had been pretty busy with a bunch of meetings, and Katherine found herself feeling pretty lonely. Sage had gotten stuck working overtime at the hospital, so Katherine didn’t really have anyone to talk to. She did, however, find herself in the kitchen a lot. Annette showed her where everything was, and was delighted to find out that Katherine was a quick learner. Baking, cooking, you name it. Annette started showing her everything that she knew.
“You know, I think Mr. Barnes has a soft spot for brownies..” Annette said, smiling as Katherine took them out of the pan.
“Really?” Katherine’s eyes looked at her, “You think.. You think it’d be okay if I took some up to him?”
Annette nodded, “If the door is closed, just make sure that you knock. But yes, I think he’d be pleasantly surprised.”
Katherine slowly nodded her head, and decided to grab a plate. She put four brownies on it, not knowing who else might be in his study with him.
“I’m going to finish up the laundry, then I’m done for the weekend!” Annette said, as she came around to the side of Katherine, taking a brownie.
“Alright, thank you for your help. Let’s hope that he likes them!”
Katherine took the plate in her hands, and started to make her way through the house. She was a bit nervous about going to Bucky’s study. She hadn't been in there since her first day here, and he’s been so busy lately.. Maybe brownies might be a nice offering. They hadn’t spent hardly any time together, shy of quick ‘Good morning’s before he had meetings. As she walked down the hall to the study, she found that the door was open. Perfect! She hummed softly, deciding to just walk in.
“Hey Bucky, I’m sorry if I’m bothering you.. But I made-“ Her words were cut short by the stares of five men.
Bucky stood at his desk, towering over scattered papers and files, a frustrated expression on his face. Steve stood next to him, the same kind of frustration.. There were three other men gathered in the room, none of which Katherine had met before. As soon as she had stepped into the room, all the men’s eyes snapped up to look at her. It startled her enough to make her stop dead in her tracks. She gripped the plate tightly, her eyes shifting between each man, finally landing on those icy blue orbs.
“Brownies..” Her last word finally came out, her voice much quieter than it started.
Her eyes glanced at all of the papers on the table, and they widened a bit when she realized what they were. Crime Scene Photos. As soon as she had that realization, the photos were all scooped up back into a Manila folder.
“Who the hell are you? Snoopy little bitch..” One of the men voiced, his words sharp. Italian. “Who said you could barge in here?”
Bucky’s head snapped towards him, and as he opened his mouth to speak, Katherine’s voice was first.
“Excuse me? I live here. If I feel like bringing my man some brownies, I’m quite sure I can do just that. And, the door was open.” Her words came out much stronger than she expected, so she kept that strength and walked further into the room. “Learn some manners, bitch.” She walked around to the side of the desk that Bucky was on, and he greeted her with what seemed like a proud smirk.
“You are quite correct, doll.” He hummed, her words feeding his ego a bit. My man. His eyes looked towards the man who voiced against Katherine, “You’re lucky you still have your tongue. Katherine is right, you should learn some manners.. That’s no way to speak to a woman, especially mine.”
Katherine felt a chill run through her, Bucky’s flesh hand resting on the small of her back. She gave him a warm smile, silently thanking him for his words.
The man in question scoffed, rolling his eyes, “Whatever. She just marched in here like she owns the place.”
This time, Bucky’s metal hand reached out. He grabbed the man by the front of his shirt, pulling him to be halfway across the desk. Katherine let out a soft gasp, though Bucky’s flesh hand stayed gently on her back. Steve stepped around Bucky, putting Katherine between the two of them.
“Her name might not be on the title yet, but this is her home. And no one will speak to my girl like that. Next time, there will be no warning. Capiche?” Bucky’s voice was loud, commanding.. And it startled Katherine a bit.
The man’s eyes widened, his hand grabbing onto Bucky’s metal one, and he just nodded his head. Bucky finally let go of him, not until his eyes seemed to peer straight into his soul. The man stood up straight, fixing his shirt. Bucky’s gaze softened, turning towards Katherine once more.
“You made brownies?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. His voice was much softer towards Katherine.
She cleared her throat, nodding her head as she held the plate up, “I only brought four.. I wasn’t sure who all was in here..”
Bucky took one, giving her a grin, “Good thing there’s only four of us. Amato, you can leave.” He didn’t even look over to the man as he dismissed him.
The man grumbled something in another language, which Katherine assumed was Italian, before storming out of the room. The other two men looked between each other, before turning to look at Katherine with small smiles.
“Katherine,” Bucky hummed, “These are two of my best men. Clint Barton, and Bruce Banner. Bruce is the head of our science division, and Clint is head of the security team.”
Steve took a brownie as well, “It’s nice to meet you both.” Katherine smiled, extending the plate over the table.
“Likewise.” Clint said, nodding his head as he took a brownie. Bruce took the last one, giving her a nod with a smile.
Katherine watched as all four men began to eat the brownies. She hadn’t even tried one yet, so she wasn’t even sure if they were good or not. Though, based on their silence, and that they continued eating them..
“These are so good, Katherine.” Steve grinned, plopping the last bit of the brownie into his mouth.
“They really are.. Reminds me of my moms.” Clint said, a soft chuckle on his lips as he ate.
Bruce smiled, “Did you make these, or did Annette?”
Katherine couldn’t help but laugh at them, “Annette supervised, and I made them. Found an old recipe we wanted to try.”
Her eyes went up to Bucky’s face, still awaiting a reaction from him. His eyes were closed, as he slowly ate the brownie. A soft hum came from him, as he finished the brownie, his eyes opening to find hers looking at him.
“Delicious.”
Katherine’s lips curved up into a big smile, “I’m glad you guys liked them. I’m starting to really get into baking, maybe I can bring some stuff up for you guys every so often.”
Bucky smiled at her, his hand still on her back, “I think that’s a really nice idea.”
Everyone was quiet for a moment, Clint moving to collect all of the papers on Bucky’s desk. Katherine glanced at them, curious about what they were.. And why that man was so rude to her.
“I’m sorry if I interrupted something important.. The door was open, so I-“ Katherine’s words were cut short by Bucky raising his metal hand as if telling her ‘stop’.
“The door was open. You did nothing wrong, doll. Amato needs to learn his place, and keep his trap shut.” Bucky’s fingers on her back slowly began to caress her, sending another chill up her body.
Katherine nodded her head, though it didn’t exactly make her feel better.
“I think it was a shock to him though, hearing you talk to him like that.” Clint said, giving her a grin, “You’ll need that sharp tongue, being in this world.. Especially being Bucks girl.”
Katherine returned the grin, “Anyone who dares to calls me a bitch, will get this sharp tongue. I don’t care who they are. I’ve dealt with a life of assholes, I’m not doing it anymore.”
All four of the men began chuckling, Steve patting Katherine on the shoulder.
“No one will ever treat you badly, doll. If they do, they’ll have to answer for it.” Bucky said, the other men nodding their heads.
Katherine’s eyes looked up to Bucky’s, searching.. All she could see was a strong, kind man. He wasn’t as scary as people made him out to be. He had only been kind to her.. She almost couldn’t believe that there was blood on his hands. She gave him a small smile, nodding her head.
“Alright boys. Now that this is taken care of..” Bucky motioned towards the folders, “I’m done for the weekend. I’ve been putting a few things off, trying to get this done.” His eyes glanced back down to Katherine.
Steve chuckled softly, nodding his head. Bruce nodded his head, “It was nice to meet you Katherine, thanks for the brownie.”
Clint smiled, “Yeah, it was nice to have a snack.”
“Of course.” Katherine smiled to them, watching as all three men walked out of the room, closing the door behind them.
“So…” Bucky cleared his throat.
Katherine raised an eyebrow, turning her body in his hand to face him, “So?”
He let out a soft breath, “I’m sorry that I haven’t spent any time with you, Katherine. Business has just..” he shook his head, “It can be very time consuming at times.”
Katherine shook her head, gently resting her hand on the arm that was still around her, “Don’t. I understand, you’re a very busy man.”
He smiled, lifting the hand from her back to gently caress her cheek with a finger. Katherine’s lips parted ever so slightly, her breath getting caught in her throat.
“Well.. I intend on spending the weekend with you.” He hummed softly, “I’d like to take you to dinner tonight.”
“Is it.. A date?” She asked, chewing on the inside of her cheek.
He chuckled softly, “As long as you want it to be..”
Katherine’s lips curved up into a happy smile, “Well, we’ve got to start somewhere, yeah? I think a date is just what we need.. You need to solidify the fact that you call me your girl.” Her words were meant as obvious teasing.
“Oh? Well, you did come into my study, and call me your man.” His lips quirked into a handsome smirk, “I think we’re on the same page, don’t you?”
“Hmm.. I suppose we’ll see, depending on how well our date goes. Maybe we’ll get somewhere.” Her expression changed to match his.
“Maybe.. I’ll steal our first kiss tonight.” His words were soft, barely above a whisper.
Katherine’s cheeks darkened, “O-Oh yeah?”
“Only if you want me to, of course..” His fingers cupped her face gently, “I don’t want to force you into anything, doll.”
“Oh, I don’t think it’ll be a problem.” Her voice was soft, her eyes peering deeply into his.
“I hope not.. I’ve wanted to kiss you since the day we met.”
Tumblr media
I've never eaten such an expensive dinner before and I was relieved I didn't have to pay for it. Bond insisted to dine somewhere outside the MI6 Headquarters, so no one could interrupt us, and I willingly agreed. I can't even recall the restaurant's name. All I can remember is his laugh caused by some filthy jokes.
He seemed more enthusiastic than ever, probably because he has just been informed that we would go on a mission together. I could tell the news surprised him, but in a positive way, as if he hoped his predicted scenario would eventually come true. And it seemed to me like it gave him a massive self-confidence boost. At times he has been insufferable, as if he wasn’t too arrogant already... The good thing was that it made him let his guard down, and I used this to my advantage, responding to each of his flirtatious comments.
Not only did I play my part well, but also I enjoyed it. And even though I really intended to improve our friendship (or should I rather call it a relationship?), I considered the fact that I could use Bond to my own ends. It's high time someone has taught this womanizer a lesson... how many women in the SIS alone did he deceive? The list's endless, but he doesn't care at all. He will break any heart without regret as they say, only because he's that *famous* James Bond. Just like that. Why on earth would he be so interested in me? Does he fancy me that much? I don't think so. And even if he does, I thought, it’s likely that he just wants to sleep with me, adding me to his collection. It's your turn, Kath. He deserves this. *You* can use him. On your own terms.
I wasn’t sure who I was anymore. Me as a ruthless adventurer? Such description didn’t suit me at all. But I felt some strange power inside of me, I heard a voice that assured me being heartless for once won't change much in my life.
The truth was, I needed us to look convincing. Not necessarily like a romantically-involved couple, but as passionate lovers. Just in case my plan to get Mallory went wrong, I could always leave the Service after a "whirlwind” affair with James Bond.
Of course I never wanted to leave the Service in the first place, not after I just have been promoted to the double-0 section, not after one of my biggest dreams came true, but... my feelings for Mallory kept getting stronger and stronger every day... until I finally realized I *had* to take chances...
After the dinner both Bond and I went back to the SIS building and visited Q in his "office”. We were given some standard equipment: a brand-new tracking device and cyanide pills. And, of course, we left the meeting armed ("And the guns, just in case. A direct order from M") - me with a Walther P99, and Bond with a Beretta 418.
We examined the guns, while Q kept browsing through some documents on his desk.
“Yeah, I think... That’s all I have for you,” he said, scratching his head.
Bond looked at Q in disapproval.
“That’s all? Not exactly Christmas, is it?”
“Were you expecting an exploding pen? We don’t really go in for that anymore,” remarked Q. “And besides... you won’t need this kind of stuff this time. But the guns are always a good idea. The ones here are the best we’ve got right now... all for our best agents.”
“I love you too, Q,” said Bond with a smirk.
“Oh, don’t mind him, Q,” I dragged in. “He’s unbearable recently,” I added, looking pityingly at Bond.
“I’m afraid he’s always been like that, you just don’t know him long enough, Kath,” replied Q and burst into laughter. “It was great to see you both.”
“Thanks, Q. You’re the best!” I exclaimed when Bond bundled me through the door.
...
We took the elevator and planned our next move. Bond promised to hand me the mission’s files the next day, so he could have enough time to go through them. We would meet in three days’ time at the airport and travel together to Monte Carlo.
I stepped into my office to check the documents I had signed earlier. I also made a call to Eve, as I didn't want to meet her in her office and cause any suspicions about my frequent visits there.
I lied down on the couch next to the window and dialed the Eve’s private number. I preferred to avoid using the SIS phone line.
"Eve... it's Kath. Do you have a minute?"
"Yes, Kath, what is it?" she answered. "You left so quickly... I immediately began to wonder what your gesture did mean..."
"Well... I'm sure you know.”
"Yeah... the thought had occurred to me," Eve chuckled. "I'll see what I can do. But finding out *anything* about *him* is definitely not going to be easy. He’s the most enigmatic man in the Service."
"What’s it to you? I will owe you one if you prove my point," I promised her, trying to sound charming.
"Alright, alright," replied Eve. "You know I’d help you anyway... Listen, you'd better be sure about this... I guess it means you put it all on the line... for him?"
I got lost in my own thoughts for a while, suddenly realizing all the consequences. I stood up, went to the bookcase, and started to read what was written on the books’ covers.
"I guess it does... It's everything or nothing."
It took Eve a moment to respond.
"I will always have your back, Kath... but... You should seriously consider this... it could cost you your career..."
"I know, Eve,” I stammered quietly. “I just can't pretend any longer..."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Kath", said Eve. "I've got to go. M needs me. We’ll talk about it later, I promise. Now I have to go."
As soon as I have hanged up, I understood that I had placed myself in a truly risky situation. In the end, I could never get Mallory... but I could easily throw away my future instead. If I was a more rational person I could seduce James Bond and live happily ever after with him as the most dangerous pair of the double-0s you'd ever met.
I've been wondering why M sends us on a mission together. Is that a test for both of us, so Mallory could see if we can cooperate despite being attracted to each other? Does he expect us to reconcile professional and private life? Anyway, I was aware of the fact that whatever happens during this mission, it would have a major impact on both my career and my relationships with Bond and Mallory.
...
I left the office after half an hour. I was standing on the corridor with the keys in my hand, when someone hugged me from behind and kissed me on the neck.
"002 is still at work, huh? What James Bond could do to make her let him... drive her home?" Bond whispered gently into my ear. His voice was smooth and very sexy.
"James," I said, trying to lock the door and free myself from his embrace. "You can't just do this in public. What will people say when they..."
The touch of Bond’s lips made me shiver, as they slowly moved from my neck to the collarbone.
"There’s no one here... and I asked... what he... could do... to make her... let him... drive her... home..." he murmured.
I closed my eyes for a moment. Bond continued to caress my waist and holded onto me. He was so close I could smell his perfume and feel his slightest move.
"Just a few more... um... kissess... and I'm sure she'll agree," I moaned with delight.
I haven’t been entirely honest with Bond. His touch was very pleasant, but not as pleasant as I kept telling him.
“Just be careful and don’t make my shirt wrinkled...”
I opened my eyes and then I've seen Mallory who was watching us from around the corner. He spoke to one of the male double-0s I barely knew. Damn, he looks dashing in this red tie, but I’m sure this man could wear *anything* and would still catch my eye, I thought. He has a pretty good figure for a man at his age... even with his arm in a sling.
"Let go of me, James," I said nervously, trying to turn around. "That was wonderful, but we can't really behave like this... here."
Bond didn’t loosen his grip, sensing the changes in my mood.
“What is it?”
“It’s Mallory,” I huffed. “He’s seen us.”
“So what?” asked Bond when I nailed my eyes on Mallory. “Is he still looking...?” Bond whispered and kissed me on the neck two more times.
I couldn’t stand being watched by Mallory when Bond kept kissing me, so I turned my head to Bond and kissed him on the lips. He was so surprised he allowed me to turn around, and then I finally broke the grip.
“You don’t waste time, do you? Our last meeting wasn’t that... steamy. What business is it of yours, James?”
“I’m your fictional husband, remember? I need to stay in character,” he answered with a smirk on his face.
I rolled my eyes.
“Katherine, didn’t we agree to start from scratch? Let’s say I’m trying to show you my best side... And that includes showing you... a few tricks I know.”
“That’s really impressive,” I replied. “But you’re mistaken if you think I will fall into bed with you in Monte Carlo. Casual flirt isn’t enough to get me,” I assured him, smiling provocatively.
“Is that so? You know what kind of things happen when two attactive agents go on a mission together...”
“I have no idea,” I said, putting my hands in my pockets.
“But you’re dying to find out,” he commented at winked at me.
I shook my head and sighed.
“James, you’re so terrible sometimes...”
“I’ll stop being terrible if you let me drive you home,” he said and took my hands in his. “I promise!”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“So, now you’re blackmailing me?”
Bond squeezed my hands.
“Can I drive you home or not?”
I came closer to him and straightened his tie.
“Sure you can. It seems that I don’t need my own car anymore...”
"Perfect," he said in his deep voice and grabbed me by the hand. “Let’s go!”
"Oh, James. Uhm... I have to get a few things from Amanda’s office,” I lied, as I didn’t want to be seen by Mallory leaving the building with Bond.
"Alright, do it quick. I'll wait for you downstairs,” he leaned in and lowered his voice. “And Katherine... pay no attention to Mallory. I can see what’s going on here... he doesn’t care. The sooner you understand it, the better.”
Damn, I thought. He can be really bossy when he wants someting, and what is even worse, he really wants *someting* from me... He thinks it’s me who deceives myself, but the truth is, he is way more deceived than I am. Over my dead body I’ll forget about Mallory! And I use the word *damn* way too often recently...
"I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I stated and kissed him on the cheek.
“Oh, you do,” said Bond quietly. “You may think he’s a better choice than me... but I will make you mine. You underestimate how much I like a challenge...” he added and gently touched my arm. “Don’t be long,” he whispered.
As soon as Bond has taken the elevator, I saw Mallory walking towards me. The thought of unexpected conversation with my supervisor made me blush, so I quickly turned my back on him, pretending to lock the door to my office. I hoped that he would just pass by.
"002..."
"Sir,” I responded, turning around.
"... why are you still here? You should go home and get some rest before the flight. To get a few days off is a rare occurence in this business."
"I just wanted to make sure I signed all the papers, sir," I replied, staring into his eyes. “I always find it hard to leave this place.”
"It’s totally understandable, but you’ll be back in no time.”
I didn’t say a word, I just smiled mildly and nodded. Mallory tilted his head.
“You wonder *why* I send you and Bond on a mission together, don’t you?”
“Actually I do, sir.“
He bored into me.
“The answer’s simple. You two look like a real, *charming* couple... judging by the way you both *enjoy* to go undercover,” mocked Mallory.
“Oh, but it only looks that way, sir,” I replied nervously. “We make some effort to look the part. It’s easier this way.”
“I’m sure it is,” Mallory commented curtly. “But the thing is that fictional husbands don’t have to always behave like gentlemen,” he added and looked at my wrinkled collar.
I got embarassed after he had said that.
“Go home, Katherine, you deserve to rest,” he said calmly. “Good luck.”
“Thank you, sir,” I said, watching him turn around and walking down the corridor.
I looked at my wristwatch. It’s time to go, Bond waits for me... but first I have to calm down a bit, I thought. I felt my heart racing in my chest. It seems that Bond’s kisses can’t make me feel even half of those things that a short conversation with Mallory can... but it doesn’t mean the current state of affairs will last forever. It’s something I know all too well.
Monte Carlo, here I come.
***
Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave
Emmett from A Quiet Place Part 2 and OC
Emmett and Katherine dated as teenagers before the relationship ended. Now during the end of the world, what happens when they are reunited?
*This will have 7 chapters total. Each chapter is named after a song title I found fitting to the scene, the artist is listed and the titles do appear in the chapters. Katie’s medical background isn’t touched upon much after the first chapter, nor is it discussed how she was trained but it was learned in the military. This is my first fanfic so hopefully it’s good!*
Warning- mention of blood
Chapter 1- Angel’s Fall (Breaking Benjamin)
Katherine had only been on the island for a few months. Before that, she had just been trying to survive the dark hell that the rest of the world had become. When her broken and weary group had made it to safety, she finally let herself think about what might have happened to all those she had loved once. Most importantly she wondered what had become of her best friend’s Evelyn and Lee, their family and of course Emmett. God how she missed him. She hadn’t seen Emmett since that stormy spring night when she shattered his heart and left him to go and join the Navy. Katie knew he would never leave their tiny hometown and if he had by some miracle gone with her, he would have been absolutely miserable. She never wanted that, she just wanted him to be happy so she left him. She had never once stopped loving him though, even after he married Nora and started a family. There had never been another for her and now with the state of the world, there most likely never would be.
As the days passed though, she began to think that Emmett and the Abbott’s hadn’t survived. She had thought of going to look for them, but going back would have been a suicide mission. No one else had made it to the island and no one ever went back. So it was quite the shock when Emmett and Regan arrived on the island soaking wet and startled by all the noise around them. She had only seen Regan in pictures Evelyn and Lee had sent and it was the first time she had seen Emmett since they were 19. He looked haggard, his thick beard a mix of gray and brown and his hair longer and shaggier then she had ever seen it. He seemed just as surprised to see her and pulled her into a tight embrace, as if he was afraid she would disappear should he let go.
“Are you warm enough? I can go get you an extra blanket.” Katie questioned, gently placing her hand on his shoulder. He shook his head and let his hand rest delicately on top of hers before locking their fingers. She perched on the log beside him and let him take her hand. Neither spoke as they stared into the roaring fire in front of them. Just before daylight fully broke he and Regan wandered off towards the beach, and it wasn’t long after that she came back up alone. Katie had just begun helping some of the other villagers start breakfast when she heard Emmett yelling “Get inside!” She spun around in time to watch one of those damn creatures attacking. In the pandemonium she lost sight of them for a brief moment before spotting Emmett, Regan and Djimon take off in the car with the creature following close behind.
“Help, please help.” She heard the screams all around, saw the chaos and destruction and knew that she needed to help the wounded. But all she could think about was Emmett. She couldn’t lose him, not again and not after she had just gotten him back. With one last glance over her shoulder at the carnage behind her, Katherine took off sprinting towards the radio station and Emmett. By the time she got there, Djimon was laying on the ground, long past being saved. The sound of the feedback from Regan’s hearing aid was emitting from within the station at a deafening volume. Quietly Katie crept into the building but once she rounded the corner, she almost stumbled on the creatures lifeless body. She had never seen one dead before, didn’t even think it was truly possible.
Glancing around, she spotted Regan knelt down next to Emmett trying to sign something to him, panic evident across her face. Katie hurried over to them. From the pool of blood forming under him, it was evident the creature didn’t go down without a fight and Emmett’s leg had taken the worst of the damage. With her training, she knew she didn’t have long to slow the bleeding before he would die right in front of them.
“Help him, please don’t let him die.” Terrified, Regan spun back around and grabbed Emmett’s shoulders, tears welling up in her eyes. His gaze finally focused on Regan who turned and looked right at Katherine. His eyes found Katie and she felt her heart stop for a moment.
“Katie, how did you get here?” He quietly groaned.
“I walked, well more like ran.” Seeing the surprise cross his face she rushed on, “I did set the fastest 1.5 mile run for my unit I’ll have you know.”
“You always were quite the runner.” He whispered, “Remember that time Lee and I fought and you and Evelyn ran halfway across the farm to stop us? You were so mad, but so pretty I couldn’t focus on you yelling at me. And that just made you even more pissed.” Emmett chuckled at the memory before grimacing in pain.
“I remember Emmett. You kissed me right as I was telling you that you needed to apologize for sucker punching Lee! I thought you guys were really going to hurt each other.” Katie smiled pulling his ripped jeans away from the wounds and Emmett flinched. Katie felt the panic squeeze her chest when she saw just how deep the cuts were but she had to force that fear away. They needed her, there was no way she could fall apart.
“You were always my angel, always saving me. I loved you more than anything, but you left me, why?”
“Well even angels fall sometimes. But I thought you could use some help and I didn’t want to let you down again. I’ve already let you down enough for one life time haven’t I?” she mumbled before quickly taking off her belt.
“Katie, there’s a child here. You can’t strip.” He said sarcastically trying to lighten the mood.
“Ha, I forgot how funny you are Em. It’s a tourniquet, to keep you from dying on us.” she replied pulling the belt tightly around his leg and trying not to show the fear she felt when he screamed in pain.
“Just let me go Kate. Take care of Regan for me, I know you’ll keep her safe. Please.” Emmett sighed weakly, letting his eyes droop closed.
“No!” both women yelled at the same time startling him.
Katie grabbed either side of his face gently forcing it towards her though he refused to make eye contact. “Emmett look at me, please.” When his ocean blue eyes finally met her emerald green ones, she hastily continued. “I don’t know what you’ve been through since this all started ok, and I can see that whatever it is has made you ready to give up. But Regan needs you damn it. You’re all she has on this island and you obviously mean a lot to her. And… and you mean a lot to me too, always have and always will. So we need you ok, we need you to fight and we need you to stay with us. I need you.” Without realizing it, Katie had started crying as she silently begged, “Please.”
He nodded almost imperceptibly before reaching up to wipe the tears from their faces, “Please don’t cry. If you’ll help me up, I’ll keep going. But I need a little help/” His hand shook slightly as he laid it gently on the side of her face.
Katie sighed and leaned into his touch. “Don’t worry, we’ve got you.”
It took both of them to help him out to the car, or what was left of it and she was miraculously able to drive them back to the village though Emmett finally passed out halfway back. Katie wasn’t the only one with medical training on the island and luckily the others who did had stayed behind and helped the survivors. But she still got several dirty looks like she was some sort of traitor as she opened the car door and Regan ran around to help her. She couldn’t be bothered to care though.
“Kurt!” She cried out spotting a friendly face and he trotted over immediately. “Help us get him into my cabin please.”
“What the hell happened? I thought those things couldn’t swim.” Kurt questioned while helping her.
“It took another boat apparently. I don’t know how though.”
 It took some time, but with Regan’s help she was able to clean and sew up the gashes in Emmett’s leg and dress the wounds. It took her even longer to convince Regan to get some sleep and she refused to leave the room Emmett was in, choosing instead to make a bed on the floor in the corner where she could see him. With both of them finally resting, Katie took a deep breath and headed out to see if she could be of any help to anyone else.
Jane's Journey- Chapter 3
prelude.   1. 2.
Jane’s sudden disappearance left Katherine sitting alone in the kitchen. Sipping on her tea at this moment seemed wrong. It wasn’t right of her to be drinking out of the blonde’s mug without her presence to grace the pink haired queen. She chose to down it instead before slowly going about cleaning the kettle and the mugs before placing them back in their respective homes.
The third queen couldn't stop the tears that flowed freely down her face as she slid down the wall closest to her door that night. The glass box that she held around Henry- all of the things she held near and dear to her heart about him, the only one she truly loved- was shattered in the instant that she realized what a terrible thing he had done to Katherine. Poor, sweet Katherine who she had left alone in the kitchen. How had she been foolish enough to not see it before? And how could she be so irresponsible and rude to leave Katherine to deal with the aftermath of making tea that she had offered to make in the first place?
Knowing she wasn’t going to get much more sleep that night, she shuffled her way down to the kitchen, being ever so careful as to watch where she was stepping. Only then was she met with the cleanliness of the kitchen and Katherine, who was now back in her seat and looking as if she hadn’t moved since the silver queen’s outburst. The only thing that gave away that she had moved at all was the appliance and cups were placed back where they were supposed to be.
“I’m sorry I fled like that,” the blonde had the decency to look abashed. “You didn’t have to clean up my mess. I was coming back down to right it.”
“It’s not a big deal. I’m sorry I made you feel that way.”
“You didn’t make me feel any sort of way Katherine. It was him, not you, and I’m so sorry I didn’t see that until now.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“But it-”
“You didn’t tell him to do all of the terrible things he did. You didn’t have any sort of hand in not being able to hold your son. You couldn’t help any of that, and you can’t help the way that history has lied to us and about us for centuries now. Nothing that happened then is your fault.”
“Fine. Well, then I’m sorry for the way I’ve acted since we’ve come back.”
“Like I said, you’re just dealing with reincarnation differently than the rest of us. But when you’re ready, we’ll always be here.”
“I-” Jane fought the urge to run at this moment of kindness Katherine was showing her. “Thank you.”
“Yeah no problem.”
“Shouldn’t you be heading to bed?”
“I probably won’t be able to get back to sleep for tonight, but you should probably get some shut eye.”
The blonde silently cursed herself- Katherine had to be awake for something troubling her, not just worrying about her, and she hadn’t even had the decency to ask if she’d like to speak about it.
“I probably won’t be getting much sleep either tonight,” the third queen stifled a yawn. “In my fit, I completely forgot to ask if you were okay.”
The fifth queen looked at her oddly. Jane had never asked if anyone was okay before. And if she was being honest with herself, she’d rather not speak of what was troublesome to her, but she figured this might be an inch closer to getting Jane to open up to her- to get closer to the woman who had closed herself off.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say I’m okay, but I’m better than I could be. Your tea really helped- thank you for that by the way. I mean it when I say it was really good. You’ll have to let me know how you do it.”
Jane blushed. “It’s made with extra l-” love , she thought. “-Loads of honey!” If Katherine could tell she was going to say the other L word that she hardly spoke, she wouldn’t say anything.
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Katherine tapped her head.
“Do you, uh...” Jane scratched her head. She wasn’t good at this whole, listening to others talk about their feelings. “Listen, I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to say here. So forgive me if this is overbearing, but I’m trying. I think I’m ready to make an active effort in becoming part of whatever strange family the rest of you queens have developed. So, would you like to talk about it?”
A smile spread across the pink haired queen’s face. “I think I would, actually.”
“Well, it seems like we’re going to be down here for a while. Would you fancy another cup of tea?” Katherine nodded at that. Jane flitted around the kitchen again. Katherine would notice that Jane had taken extra care in fixing their tea again- a care that she wouldn’t normally take if she was just making it for herself. A few minutes later, the two mugs the fifth queen had just finished putting away were set back on the table, and Jane sat back in her spot awkwardly.
“Well, go on,” she said curtly before sipping her tea.
“I suppose that, uhm, this life is quite strange,” Katherine began, and Jane nodded her head to indicate she was listening. “We’ve sort of forged this family... which is quite weird. Who would have thought that his six wives would come back without him, only to create this sort of found family where we all have each others’ backs.”
Jane couldn’t help but interject, “Well, five out of six.”
“You have my back right now, sitting here and listening in the dead of night. The six of us Jane.”
“Okay, okay. Continue.”
“We’ve created this family, and I guess I never really had a sense of what family was, or should be like. I know you know all about the men who ultimately are the reason who got me... but back then, my home life was certainly not anything to boast about. Mother had died when I was five, and father had sent me off to live with my step-grandmother- a nasty and bitter woman. I was overlooked by my brother and cousins quite often. I’m not sure how your home-life was, but I’m sure you can relate to that. I’ve read up on your past, and-”
“No one gave you the right to do that,” Jane snapped, the warmth that was beginning to creep into her eyes quickly replaced with a dullness.
“I’m so-”
“Yeah, you’re so sorry,” Jane retorted, a bitterness lacing her voice. “You just had to be nosey and read up on me. You said it yourself, history lies. I was right here, and you didn’t have the respect to ask me yourself.”
“Well, Jane, with all due respect,” Katherine treaded lightly. “I was afraid this was how you would react if I tried to speak with you before you were ready. I didn’t want to intrude on your healing.” The fifth queen made herself appear smaller.
“I just fucked up, didn’t I?”
“Well, maybe a little,” the pink queen giggled slightly. “But, you can always fix it. I’m pretty forgiving.”
“I’m sorry. I just- this is all so new. I don’t really quite know how to handle myself very well yet I suppose.”
“It’s alright. We’re all adjusting. Some of us just need a bit more time than the others, like I was saying. It’s all really new to me too. Only recently have I let the others take me under their wing. But now that that’s happening and all...” Katherine looked away briefly, the only light in the room making her look younger than ever. “I guess I’m just nervous it’s not going to be any different than it was back then. You know, get close to them, let them use me for whatever they need, and then they drop me. Or, well, I don’t really know. It’s silly now that I’m voicing these things.”
“I- I don’t think it’s silly. It’s a fear, and a rational one at that. You’ve been hurt before, so you’re trying to protect yourself. I, uh, me too. Every time I see a small child with their mother, I can’t help but feel angry because... I want- or at least I wanted- that. I wasn’t getting close to you guys because... I feared that if I did, fate would have it that I would just have to leave again. It’s not... It’s not silly. I understand the feeling,” Jane reassured the younger woman. “And for what it’s worth, I think you’re doing a much better job than I am at readjusting to this strange world. And for someone so young too, you really have your head on straight. You should be proud of that.” In those last few sentences, Jane resisted the urge to place a reassuring hand on the other’s shoulder. She had already crossed enough lines tonight: joining Katherine, listening to Katherine, exposing her vulnerability to Katherine. It would all be too much, and she wasn’t quite ready to cross the line that might make the younger woman uncomfortable.
“I’m sorry you understand the feeling.”
Jane shrugged. “It is what is it, right?”
“Yeah,” Katherine agreed. “You know... Back then, I was a big fan of yours. Everyone said you were so warm and kind. I dreamed of meeting you, and maybe even being a lady in waiting. There were people who said you were the kindest woman they had met, and we were lucky to have you as queen. People who said you were going to be a great mother when news broke out that you were with child. I imagined myself there with you often. It would’ve been a much better life than the one I had lived.”
The blonde smiled sadly, remembering all of the same thoughts she had since meeting the sweet woman. “Yeah, well... fate didn’t seem to work out for either of us, now did it?”
“No, it might not have. But we’re here now, right? We can right what was wrong? Make the best out of what we’ve got right?” The fifth queen prayed Jane wouldn’t shut her out now. They were seemingly making progress.
“You’re right. I think I’ll do my best to be a bit warmer around you all from now on. I do hope you know I really am sorry for the way I’ve treated you all, especially you.”
“C-can I ask why me specifically?” the younger woman asked meekly.
“I- I’m not quite sure I’m ready to reveal that yet. Maybe another day.” The third queen wasn’t ready to reveal that something about Katherine drew her in. She wasn’t ready to admit that if she had won her fight for her life all those years ago, she most certainly would’ve taken a sweet young Katherine in and treated her as her own- as a big sister to her sweet Edward.
“That’s just fine.” The two sat in silence for a few seconds before Jane broke it.
“Thank you for showing me how to get through the house quietly,” the blonde muttered.
“Yeah, no problem,” the pink haired woman replied.
“How did you learn how to do that?”
“Well, uh...”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to tell me,” Jane assured her.
“No it’s fine. I learned because well, back in our old lives, when I was living with my step-grandma, she had really strict rules. We were given our meals, and that’s what we dealt with. Once we were sent to our rooms for the night, we weren’t allowed to get back out of bed. Of course though, there was never enough food that she made for us, and I always got the short end of the stick. So, at night when I knew that evil woman was asleep, I would make my way through the house quietly and find little morsels of food to eat. I learned how to make it through the house silently here too. I just didn’t want to be a burden to any of you if you were sleeping.”
“Oh Kat.” The nickname slipped out with ease. “Oh shit, can I call you Kat?” The silver queen suddenly felt extremely self-conscious of herself. The fifth queen just nodded. “You would never be a burden to any of us. We all buy this food for all of us to eat. Please tell me you know that.”
“I mean, yeah I know that. I just- I don’t know. Whatever I eat I usually replenish as soon as I can anyway. Catherine will normally go with me to the store saying she ‘needs a break from hurricane Anne’, so we go.”
“Is that why there is a seemingly never-ending supply of granola bars?” Jane’s eyes were soft again, and Katherine would be lying to herself if she said she liked this side of the woman next to her much more than the distant woman she thought she knew. It was warm, almost maternal. Almost. She nodded once more.
“Maybe next time, I could accompany you?”
“I-I think I’d really like that,” the younger woman blushed.
“Well, I think we’ve passed a good amount of time down here, yeah?”
“Yeah. We should probably be getting back to bed.” Katherine stood and held out her hand expectantly.
“I can clean it up.” Jane held onto her mug firmly.
“Well, you made the drinks. I figured I could be some help and-”
“Let someone take care of you for once Kat,” the older woman chided her gently before whisking the cup away from her and heading to the sink to clean them.
“Thank you for letting me use your mug.”
“Of course Kat.” She finished washing them and placed them on the drying mat, only for Katherine to pick them back up and dry them before carefully putting them back where they were meant to be in the morning.
When the two made their back upstairs, the pair stood outside Jane’s room in a comfortable silence.
“Well, goodnight I guess. I hope you get some good sleep.” The fifth queen began to shuffle awkwardly down the hall to her room before Jane called out.
“Kat!” she whisper-yelled, although it sounded more like a hiss. Why was she angry? Hadn’t the two just had a good night together? Jane made her way down to the pink haired queen, although much slower, trying to replicate the movements the younger woman had just made. “C-Can I hug you?”
“I- uh-” The fifth queen stumbled out, shocked that of all the people in the house, it was her that Jane wanted to hug first.
“No, no, you’re right. That was foolish of me. I’m sorry for crossing that boundary. I’ll just be going back to-” her words were paused when a certain someone’s pink ponytail ended up in her mouth, slim arms wrapping around her waist.
Jane was stiff. Yes, she had initially asked to give the teen in front of her a hug, but then it dawned on her: she hadn’t hugged anyone since being brought back to life. This body was new to her, and she didn’t quite have a handle on it yet. The fifth queen didn’t quite let go yet though, hoping and praying that the third queen would reciprocate. Slowly, the blonde undid herself from the younger woman, only to reach up and pull her into her arms. It was a funny sight to see really; Katherine bending down to allow the older woman to wrap her arms around her.
“Thank you,” Jane muttered into her hair. “For letting me be when I needed it. I’ll make this right, I promise you.”
“I’m sure you will Jane,” the pink queen whispered back.
“I’m sure there will be bumps in the road, but I promise you: I’m going to do my best.”
“I believe you,” Kat affirmed- the first time she would utter these words in this new life and truly mean them.
When the two separated, Jane looked up at the younger woman with a look that could only be described as a maternal love. “Get some sleep now Kat. I’ll see you in the morning.” She made her way back to her room silently, leaving Katherine in her spot.
“Goodnight Jane,” she whispered back before turning in for the night.
As Jane tucked herself back into her bed for the night, she looked up at the ceiling and sighed, “Oh Eddie. How lucky you would’ve been to have Kat as a sister.”
Both women dreamed of family that night. Katherine dreamt of her new found family, a certain blonde woman now included. Jane dreamt of Edward and Katherine- sans Henry.
