Fishman Island/Wano connection I've been thinking on over the past few days.

Red Roc is an upgrade of Red Hawk, an attack Luffy developed from being inspired by Ace, and makes a good through line to Fishman Island, where he first uses the attack. It is also during Fishman Island that he says he trained for two years to protect everyone, which adds so much to his first use of an upgraded Red Hawk being due to him realizing he was late to the roof and seeing how he failed to protect the samurai against Kaido.

Aizawa Still Has No Tact

For my 1,000th post I wanted to redraw my first ever post (excluding reblogs), but I ended up posting a new chapter of Taxonomies, completely forgetting about this plan, so I had to make it my 1,001st post instead. Close enough. Enjoy this new and tasty remake.

It's always funny to encounter someone who has... a skewed idea of what "One Piece" is like due to Monkey D. Luffy's silly vibe, usually in part because they also have the perception that cartoons are exclusively for kids. Like, "Pirates aren't just groups of friends who go on wacky adventures together! Real pirates are thieves and murderers and constantly on the run from people who want them dead!"

And it's just... "One Piece" has many flaws, and it IS wacky a lot of the time, but... uh, I cannot emphasize enough the depths of corruption and cruelty and violence it depicts from both pirates and governments. The audience is going to be regularly putting their hands over their mouths in the face of some of the evil shown here, both impossibly fantastic and shockingly true to ordinary historical greed. Luffy is an in-universe outlier and everyone around him thinks he's fucking crazy.

I've started going through some of the fillers now that I'm caught up with the main manga story, and this first one about the dragon and lost island (eps 54-60) is pretty interesting - especially how Luffy could hear the dragon's thoughts, (in a way it reminded me of him hearing Zunesha on Zou, though it is different)

and how Zoro could pretty quickly tell when someone dangerous was nearby (with a sense that seems very similar to observation haki 🤔)

but also this fun zolu part:

I've seen it in some clips or screenshots before (gifs and screenshots really don't do justice to the amazing voice acting here lol "Zoorooooooooooooooo") but I haven't seen it with the context of this Apis girl being worried about Zoro before, (who stayed behind to let the crew get away with the dragon, and they managed that, and her concern made Luffy search out for Zoro to get him back to their ship. (Thankfully, because otherwise he would have totally get so lost on that small island)

and even in one scene before this clip she was worried if Zoro was going to be alright - and Luffy could reassure her with his absolute certainty that Zoro would be just fine.

It's pretty fun how this scenario repeats all the way thoughout the story (with at least two very similar scenes being in Dressrosa) where other people question if Zoro would be fine and Luffy has the full trust in his capabilites and strength.

The 'mutants' of the fog cat tribe.

I keep thinking about how little we know of the cat siblings, compared to Cale's other children like Raon or the wolf children. What kind of people were their parents? How did their tribe murder them? Were the siblings there to watch their parents' last moments? How old were they? Why were they 'mutants'? How were they treated there? When and how did they escape their tribe? So as I kept brainrotting at 2 am, a new hyperfixation took over me. And I'm writing two ohn and hong centric fics, neither is going to be finished at current rate, so I drew them to calm my mind. I'm never doing backgrounds again. (It's supposed to be a tent entrance)
