Summary: 1919 England, Emma Cassidy, wife of a baronet, finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage after the war leaves her husband, Neal, paralyzed from the waist down and unable to produce an heir.
Despite the obstacles, she sticks by her husband's side at Goldby Hall, his family's estate, but when she meets former army lieutenant and Neal's aloof gamekeeper, Killian Jones, she feels curiously drawn to his distant blue eyes and quiet demeanor.
At first, she seeks him out for reprieve from her soulless, mundane existence at Goldby Hall, but what starts out as purely physical quickly turns into more than either of them expects.
But Emma is a baronetess, wife of an aristocrat and Killian is a working class servant. Their love affair is frowned upon, and she risks losing her title, her wealth and her position in the world by being with him. But she is determined to get her happy ending with the man she loves. Even if it means losing everything else in the process.

Chapter Four
“There was an explosion in the mines, and Ted was only twenty-eight.” Johanna places some violets into a small vase on Neal’s breakfast tray. “The company said it was his own fault somehow. He was running away when he should have laid down. The compensation was only £300. I’ll never forgive them for that. Them branding Ted a coward.”
Emma’s heart constricts as she sits at the table with her legs crossed, hearing about Mrs. Bolton’s husband. From what Johanna has told her so far, Mr. Bolton was a very brave man. “He wasn’t a coward, though, Johanna. He was only trying to survive.” She offers a small smile before her eyes fall to the tray Johanna had prepared.
At first she worried Neal would take Johanna for granted and give her too much responsibility, but the caretaker doesn’t seem to be stressed or overworked. In fact she is always positive and cheerful and encourages Emma to go for walks and get some fresh air. She is used to Neal and his demands after all.
“You should really let Wendy do that. You’re his nurse, not his servant.”
Johanna waves off her words. “No, I don’t mind. Busy hands, quiet mind.”
Before she takes the tray, Emma snatches a small plate of toast and tears off a piece, popping it into her mouth.
Johanna laughs softly just as the bell tinkles. “Oh, there’s the bell. I have to go.”
After Johanna leaves the room to bring Neal his tray, Emma finishes her toast and goes for a walk. She’s feeling stronger than before, both mentally and physically. Her appetite has returned and she doesn’t feel weighed down like she did when she was Neal’s caretaker.
When she reaches the forest, it’s still, yet gusty, the sun warming her skin, the rays showing through the trees.
She takes the same route she usually does, but this time she can hear faint pounding or maybe the chopping of wood. She follows the sound and it leads her to a long, winding creek, the water flowing around a trail of rocks that are close enough together to allow her to cross the creek. So she steps onto the first rock and carefully skips from one to the next. Once she reaches the other side of the creek, she follows a path around some firs, where the chopping draws nearer and she comes across a secret little hut made of rustic poles where the keeper is chopping wood. Emma’s breath catches as she stops to admire him.
His sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, exposing strong forearms, his biceps bulging underneath his navy-blue shirt. Emma's eyes are glued to him as he lifts the ax, the fabric straining over the breadth of his shoulders which tense as he brings it down with a low grunt, the log splitting easily in two with a loud crack before he adds to the pile of chopped wood.
Droplets of sweat bead at his forehead before rolling down the sides of his handsome face. He wipes it with his arm and slips off his suspenders, letting them fall by his thighs. She’s not sure why but the strength of his body combined with the sureness and power of his strokes send heat coursing through her, setting her skin ablaze despite the chilly air.
Jolly trots toward her, barking, alerting the keeper of her presence, and Emma smiles, reaching out a hand to pet her as the dog runs down the steps.
Jones lowers the ax and salutes, watching her in silence, as she climbs the steps. She can tell he’s annoyed by the intrusion, for he enjoys the quietness of this place. Enjoys his solitude.
“I wondered what the sound was,” she explains, feeling weak and breathless as she rubs her arms to warm herself. She steps toward the door of the hut and turns around to face him. “Is there a chair in this hut? I walked much further than I expected, afraid I wore myself out.”
“Of course, your Ladyship.” He sets down the ax on the tree stump and leads her inside. “Please, come in.” Drawing out a chair, he places it in the center of the floor.
Emma takes a seat, thanking him.
“I’ll light your fire, milady.”
She looks up at him in surprise. “Oh, no, don’t bother.” But as she peers down at her hands, they’re nearly blue.
“No, I insist.” He quickly takes some logs to the little brick fireplace in the corner. “Warm yourself up a little bit while I prep the coops for the new chicks.”
Soon the flames blaze and crackle, the smoke rising up the chimney.
She sits and warms her hands while Jones goes outside and starts hammering nails into plywood. She listens to the tapping as she looks around.
The hut is quite cozy, paneled with unvarnished material, and there’s a little table and stool at the back wall. It has no windows, the only light coming in through the open door. It’s not luxurious by any means, and it’s a bit cluttered with tools and traps and other materials for the keeper's various projects, but it looks like a nice little sanctuary from the rest of the world. In fact, it looks like the perfect place to come and read her books. The perfect place to escape from Goldby.
She’s not sure how much time passes when she realizes the tapping has ceased. She turns her head toward the doorway and catches the keeper averting his gaze from her and returning to his task, the tapping continuing.
Was he watching her?
He’s now hammering away at his workbench, giving no sign of awareness of her presence. He is obviously a man who likes to be alone, and she is invading his personal space. He is quiet and sort of broody like a timid, wild animal that recoils at human contact and hides away from the rest of the world. As she stares at him fixedly, she is reminded she had seen him naked, those images flooding her mind so intensely, her cheeks warm and she looks away, a tiny smile tugging at her lips.
Feeling hot now, a little fire of her own flickering inside her, Emma rises and stands in the doorway.
He doesn’t look her way, just focuses on his task.
“I never knew this hut was here before.”
“Not many do. That's why I like it.”
Surely his statement is a hint to his displeasure of her being here. “Do you keep it locked when you’re not around?”
He nods, still hammering away softly. “Sometimes, milady.”
“Can I have a key?”
He finally pauses from his task and looks her way, a look of surprise—or maybe irritation—on his face, like she is invading his sanctuary. But she finds it difficult to determine whether he is annoyed by her presence or simply curious about her. “You want a key?”
She nods. “Mmhmm. I think I’d like to sit here sometimes,” she murmurs, not in a demanding tone but one that says a thousand words she doesn’t actually speak. She too seeks solitude and escape from her ordinary world.
He studies her for a moment, their eyes locked, and she knows he senses her loneliness and desperate need for this tranquil hideout to either escape from human contact or from simply one person in particular. “I don’t know if there is another key.”
“Well, I’ll see to it myself then. Good afternoon.”
“Afternoon, my Lady.” He salutes as she walks away, heading down the steps.
When Emma returns home, Neal is waiting for her at the tea table, where the old brass kettle is simmering on the tray.
She removes her scarf and hat, putting them away and returning to Neal. “Sorry. Am I late?”
He doesn’t answer but the fake smile he offers tells her he is annoyed by her tardiness for their daily afternoon tea.
“Why didn’t you let Mrs. Bolton make the tea?”
“I don’t quite see her presiding over the tea table.”
“Hmm, I don’t remember anything about tea in our wedding vows,” she mumbles bitterly, plopping down into the chair across from him.
He glances over at her curiously. “What did you do all afternoon?”
“Went for a walk and found a nice little hut where the pheasants are reared.” She pours them both a cup of tea. “Do you think there is a second key to the hut?”
“There may be one in Father’s study. Why?”
“I thought it was quite lovely. Might read my book there sometime.”
Neal chuckles mockingly. “Books by that degenerate Irishman?”
Emma raises a brow. “What? You mean James Joyce?”
“I heard his next book is to be banned for obscenity.”
“Hmm, such a shame. I was looking forward to reading it.” Sitting back in her chair, she sips her tea.
Neal picks up his own cup and takes a sip. “Was Jones at the hut?”
“Mmhmm. Don’t think he appreciated the intrusion.”
“What did he say?”
“Nothing. It was just his manner.” Emma laughs softly. “Don’t think he liked me having freedom of the castle.”
Neal scoffs. “That’s what happens when a lieutenant goes back to being a gamekeeper. What do you expect, giving a fellow like that rank and a sense of importance then taking it all away?”
Emma frowns at her husband, drumming her fingers on her teacup as she thinks about Neal’s words. Should a hired man be deemed less important because of his lack of rank and title? It’s certainly a Cassidy thing to say.
~*~
Dear Mary Margaret,
I hope it hasn’t been raining all week in Scotland like it has here. I’ve been able to go out and explore the grounds all I like. But I’ve spent most of this last week cooped up, aching to get back outside. I’m writing to you now from a little hut I found in the forest. A secret place where I can hide away from the world. Only one other person comes here.
Emma looks up from the leather bound notebook she's penning the letter in as she sits on the porch of the hut since she’d been unable to find the spare key in the study. It's a bit chilly but the sound of the light drizzle of rain is soothing.
Jones emerges from around the firs and heads up the steps with his gun tucked underneath his arm. She quickly closes her notebook and pushes herself up, apology on her face, afraid he might be upset she’s here, invading his space once again. “Don’t worry. I was just going. Only came to get out of the rain.”
He holds up a key. “I shall leave this here until I get another one made.” He extends the key to her, and she takes it in her hand, wrapping her fingers around it and gaping at him in surprise. Surprised he’s willing to give up his sanctuary to her. Or at least lend it to her when he’s not here. “Thank you.”
“The hut’s not very tidy, but I cleared it of what I could.”
“But I didn’t want you to go to any trouble.”
He shakes his head. “Oh, it wasn’t any trouble. I am setting the hens in about a week. But they won’t be scared of you. I still have to see to them morning and night, but I shan’t bother you any more than I can help.”
“But you wouldn’t bother me,” she assures him. “I’d rather not go to the hut at all if I am going to be in the way.”
He stares at her with his warm but distant blue eyes as though he’s surprised by her own kindness. He then turns away from her to cough.
She eyes him in concern. “You have a cold?”
“It’s nothing, your Ladyship. The last pneumonia left me with a cough, but it’s nothing.” He points at the top of the door frame above his head. “Just leave it here when you’re done, Milady. And I’ll do the same.” He salutes her before turning around to leave.
A small smile pulls at her lips as she inserts the key into the keyhole and opens the door. Stepping inside, she sits in the chair and finishes her letter to Mary Margaret.
I wish I could visit you, but Neal says he can’t manage here without me. Not yet at least. But I’ll come on the next holiday, I promise.
With love,
Emma
When she’s finished, she closes her notebook and leaves the key on the door frame before heading back home.
Over the next few days, the rain abates and she visits the hut every chance she can afford, reading her books in the chair and enjoying the quiet and peaceful reprieve from her marriage to Neal. Her aversion for him grows with each passing day. But she does not hate him, for hatred requires passion, emotion, and she feels none of that for him. There is nothing between them. He never so much as touches her and she never touches him. He never even attempts to hold her hand yet tortures her by telling her how committed he is to her and that he never wants her to leave.
What honorable man would subject a woman to this horrifying duty and then abandon her there in the void?
She flees as much as possible to the forest and retreats to the hut in the morning or afternoon. Jones is never at the hut when she’s there, but she surmises he is purposely trying to avoid her.
He had made the hut tidy and set the little table and chair near the fireplace, leaving a pile of kindling and small logs for her so she could warm herself while she’s there. Such a simple gesture, but very thoughtful of him. Outside, he had built a low little roof of boughs and straw, a shelter for the birds, and under it stands the five coops.
On another day when she arrives at the hut, she finds a brown hen sitting alert and fierce in the coop on the pheasants’ eggs, fluffed out so proudly. Emma calls her Lord of the Manor.
The next time she comes, all five coops are occupied by hens, three brown, one gray and one black. All alike, they cluster themselves down on the eggs, fluffing out their feathers. And with brilliant eyes, they watch Emma as she crouches before them, and they cluck with anger and alarm, protective of their eggs.
Emma finds some corn from the corn-bin in the hut and offers it but they will not eat it, one hen pecking at her hand with a fierce little jab. She’s afraid to get pecked again but longs to give something to the brooding mothers since they neither feed themselves nor drink. So she brings water in a little tin and is delighted when they drink.
Now she comes every day. Lately the hens are the only things in the world that warm her heart, give her a reason to get out of bed in the morning. They are the only things she looks forward to. Well that and possibly running into the keeper again.
When she arrives at the hut in the late afternoon on a beautiful sunny day with large tufts of primroses under the hazels and many violets dotting the paths, there is one tiny baby chicken dancing around in front of a coop and the mother hen clucking in terror. The little gray-brown chick has dark markings, and at that very moment, it is the most lively little spark of a creature in the seven kingdoms.
In a state of bliss, Emma crouches down to watch in wonderment as though the chick were her own. So little and precious and completely fearless. The small chick makes her envious. Even though it scampers back into the coop in response to the mother's shrill cries and hides beneath her feathers, it isn't actually frightened.
Emma is fascinated by the new life, but at the same time she is reminded more than ever of her own loneliness. It’s becoming unbearable.
She has only one desire in life now—to visit the hut in the forest. The rest is an agonizing, painful nightmare she wishes to wake up from. She supposes the forest is her awake-ness. But sometimes she is kept all day at Goldby by her duties as hostess.

“Well, if it starts to increase profits, that should keep them in business for the foreseeable future,” Mr. Geppetto says. Marco Geppetto is the general manager of the collieries, and once Neal got wind that the town of Misthaven will soon be going under, the coal thinning, he requested Mr. Geppetto’s presence for dinner.
“We can modernize as well. Why not?” Neals asks him as he sits at the head of the long dining table with other businessmen.
“Neal, what about your writing?” Emma points out.
He scoffs, dismissing her question. “The literary world doesn’t need me. But the mine’s a sinking ship. It needs a proper captain to save her.”
“Don’t you think the miners have led grim enough lives?” she points out, not happy about Neal’s new endeavor. “I mean, couldn’t you just help them move on?”
“To what? Begging?” He chuckles. “Help them move on?” he parrots in a derisive voice. “You talk like such a woman.”
She sighs and sets down her fork on the dinner plate, her appetite suddenly gone. “Spoken like a man.”
Neal ignores her and reverts his attention to Marco. “Mr. Geppetto, how much might it cost us, a ballpark, to build a chemical work?”
“Initially, I’d say around £500 to £700. Obviously, within that, there is contingency…”
Emma throws her napkin onto the table and rises, silently storming out of the room. She pulls on her violet mackintosh and slips out of the house at the side door, trying to hold back her tears.
It’s nearly dark, the sun setting as she flees across the park, afraid Neal has noticed she has left and will call her back or have someone else call her back.
She arrives at the hut, flushed and out of breath. The keeper is here, surprisingly enough, closing up the coops for the night, so the little occupants will be safe.
“I came to see the chicks!” She hurries up the steps, panting and glancing shyly at the keeper. “How many do we have now?”
“Eighteen, milady. Not bad.”
“Eighteen…” Emma’s eyes widen as she crouches in front of one of the coops. “Can I touch one?”
“Yeah, go ahead..”
Emma opens the door of the coop, a little timid after being pecked by the mother before. “What if one pecks at me?”
“Then peck it back,” he answers in a teasing tone.
Emma rolls her eyes and cautiously sticks her hands into the coop, the chicks chirping as they patter about on tiny feet. She lets out a little squeal when they all flock toward her trying to peck with tiny beaks.
The keeper comes over and stands above her, chuckling as he crouches down beside her, picking up a chick and gingerly placing it in her hands, encasing the backs of hers with his palms. “That’s it. Very gently.” The tiny body is warm and shaky in her palms. And the keeper's hands are warm against the back of hers, making her heart flutter.
“He’s trembling.”
“You’re trembling much more than he is.”
Emma’s not sure why, but for some reason, holding the baby chick in her hand fills her heart with emotion. Such a tiny creature, yet so full of life. Unlike her, a full-grown woman who has no life left within her. She will never be able to bear children as long as she is shackled to Neal, she will never get to hold a tiny baby in her arms and show him or her tenderness and care and affection, the things Neal will never show her.
Despite herself, a tear slips down Emma’s cheek and lands on her wrist. No longer able to hold back, she gives in to the emotions buried inside her, body racking with sobs.
“Milady?” he says in concern after a moment.
She exhales sharply, realizing she’s crying in front of the gamekeeper. Shame is added on to all the other emotions she feels. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s all right,” he murmurs sweetly as he gently takes the chick in his hands and releases him inside the coop.
She is once again surprised by his kindness as she wipes at her tears and buries her face in her hands, gasping for air. He rises and extends his hand to her, helping her up. His palm is so warm against hers, a wave of something indescribable crashing through her.
He closes the coop and turns toward her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder and softly, gently, strokes her back in soothing circles. Her heart is pounding painfully as she spins and throws her arms around him tightly as though her life depends on it, craving his warmth and more of his comforting scent.
At first his body stiffens—he’s not sure how to react, or maybe he’s too stunned to react—then he slowly winds an arm around her. “So that’s how it’s been lately, eh?” He brings his other arm around her and continues stroking her back softly and slowly as she sobs into his shoulder. “Don’t cry,” he whispers, his voice calm and soothing in her ear.
After a moment, she releases her hold on him and he leads her into the hut.
He sets aside the chair and table and grabs a brown soldier’s blanket from the tool-chest, spreading it out on the floor. She glances at his handsome face.
“You lie there, I’ll start the fire.” He closes the door and kneels in front of the fireplace to get it going.
Emma sinks to her knees on the blanket beside him but doesn’t lie down, just tries to catch her breath and wipe her tears.
“We need more firewood.” He moves to get up, but she grabs his arm to stop him.
“Please don’t go.” Among the overwhelming sadness, she feels painfully drawn to him and so helplessly desperate for his warmth. His affection. Anything he can give her really.
Surprised she had stopped him, he eyes the hand on his arm before moving his intense blue ones to her sad green ones. All the air leaves her lungs when she swears, underneath that loneliness, she spots the desire there. Desire for her, perhaps?
The thought intrigues her, makes her want to discover how true her musings are. Does he yearn for her as much as she yearns for him?
Drawing his hand to her lips, she inhales his manly scent, sparking parts of her to life again, her senses tingling. She brushes her lips across his skin, her heart pounding as she looks up at him. He’s no longer looking at her, but she can see his face. She can see the internal battle in his features. He wants her, but he’s torn. He’s trying to reign in his desire for her. She hopes he gives in. She wants it more than anything she has wanted in a long time.
She gives his hand a tug, trying to pull him closer, and he doesn’t move just yet, but she can almost see those walls of his caving in. She can see it in his eyes, the way they darken and become hooded. He brushes the pad of his thumb over her lips, and she kisses him there, taking his hand in both of hers and breathing heavily against his skin, but for a different reason this time. He finally turns his head toward her, and after a moment’s pause, he comes closer, cupping her cheeks in his hands. She sighs in utter relief, her eyes locked with his, letting him see the desperation behind her jaded depths.
She wants him, she wants him so much it terrifies her.
He leans in so close, she thinks he’s going to kiss her, but instead his lips linger over hers and she can feel his breath mingle with hers as he strokes her cheek with one hand and lowers one of his suspenders with the other. She pulls down his other one as he removes his hat, sharply flinging it to the floor with a loud thump and resting his forehead against hers.
Lowering Emma to the floor, he fumbles for her undergarments, moving her dress out of the way and removing the thin silk sheath of her slip, desperately pulling it over her feet, tossing it aside and spreading her legs wide, leaving on her stockings and shoes. Quickly and clumsily, he undoes his trousers, their breaths heavy, hearts pounding in anticipation, their eyes fused in a heated, unbreakable gaze.
God, she needs him.
She hadn’t realized how badly until this very moment.
As fast as he moves, she is too damn patient in her need for him, her core pulsing with need, her body aching for him to touch her. To pound into her. When he finally gets his trousers down to his knees, his cock is big and hard and throbbing—even bigger than she had imagined—as he wraps his fingers around himself and kisses her naval softly, his lips warm and firm against her skin. Looming over her, he settles himself in the cradle of her soft, bare thighs and enters her swiftly. Emma gasps, her body thrumming with relief. She grabs his shirt, pulling him closer, urging him to move, her hand slipping underneath his clothes and stroking his back, desperate to pull him in deeper.
Good lord, he feels good.
Incredible, really.
He buries his face into the crook of her neck, his lips sliding over her heated skin, and finally, finally, begins thrusting deep into her warmth, all the air leaving her lungs. The welcoming intrusion as he rocks into her slick, tight heat slowly yet fiercely, his warm, heavy breaths brushing her skin, his solid weight on her fragile body and the low groans in her ear awaken every single part of her, parts that have been dormant for years.
As he picks up speed, their heavy panting and moans sync and intensify with each thrust. Emma gropes for something sturdy to hold onto and she cards her other hand through his untidy hair. Gripping the leg of the table tightly, it drags along the floor, the table knocking against the wall as he fucks her rough and hard in the middle of the hut.
It feels so good, too good, and she doesn't want this to stop but it's been years since she had been with a man, she doesn't even remember how long. Arching her back, she tips her head, moans flying from her lips as she feels her orgasm building.
“Yes, yes, yes!” she cries out as her walls come tumbling down around his girth, and she knows no one can hear her from deep within the forest.
Jones moves faster now, chasing his own impending orgasm, and the unusually high-pitched sounds clawing from his throat make her skin tingle as he groans and grunts into her neck. "Bloody hell." When he gets there, his thrusts are more aggressive but slower as he pours his seed inside of her.
He stills, and Emma runs her hands through his hair, still writhing in his arms as his body goes limp. He lowers his head and groans, panting heavily against her breast.
They stay like that for a while, still and quiet, while they reassemble themselves.
She briefly wonders if this is even real.
Is she dreaming?
If she is, she doesn’t wish to wake up.
Jones still lies atop her with his arms around her, their bodies still fused as her mind reels with so many questions.
What is he feeling? What is he thinking? Does he regret this? Does he even like her? She has no idea. He is a stranger to her, she doesn’t even know his first name. Whenever someone mentions him, they always refer to him as the keeper or Jones.
They had not even kissed, they hadn't stared into each other's eyes dreamily while he fucked her, they hadn't engaged in foreplay. They had skipped all of that, too desperate to have each other, but perhaps it’s better this way. Better to not risk getting attached. They were both simply fulfilling their most carnal needs.
Yet when he finally rises and draws away from her, taking away his weight and warmth, it feels like abandonment. He pulls up his trousers, tucking his shirt into them, replaces his hat on his head and quietly opens the door, stepping outside.
Seeing it’s now dark, the silver moon shining above the trees, she quickly pulls on her slip and rises, dragging her hands over her face and taking a deep breath. After rearranging herself, she leaves the hut and finds Jones on the porch, waiting for her.
“I’ll walk you back,” he says casually as if he hadn’t just fucked the lights out of her and orgasmed inside of her.
They’re both silent as he walks with her back to the park, his hands shoved into his pockets as he trails behind her shyly. “You alright, milady?”
“Mmhmm. You?”
“Aye…” They approach the park gate and turn toward each other. “That was uh…” He scratches behind his ear, fumbling to finish his sentence.
“A one-time thing,” she clarifies firmly.
He nods, his cheeks turning pink. “Probably for the best.”
Emma nods her head toward the park, making sure to not let on how much she wishes this weren’t a one-time thing. But it has to be. It’s best for everyone.
“I should probably go on alone.” She opens the gate and turns back at him. “Goodbye then.”
“Goodbye, milady.”
After she steps through, he salutes her and grabs the gate, pulling it closed.
Emma bites her bottom lip as she walks back to Goldby, or rather floats back, still in a daze. She can feel Jones' warmth dripping down her thighs and it's a feeling she rather enjoys, like a souvenir. She has no choice but to remember their brief encounter. Not that she wants to forget. She won’t be able to forget. She can still feel how incredible he had felt on top of her, she can still feel how big he was inside her, filling her up so perfectly.
She doesn’t know why but she doesn’t even feel guilty about being with him. In fact, it feels freeing, like a heavy gray cloud has been lifted from her world, the stars finally aligning.
She feels light as a feather.
But then she gets closer to Goldby and her heart starts to pound when she remembers Neal and worries he'll be upset with her for leaving.
But when she returns, Johanna informs her he’s still chatting with Mr. Geppetto.
He didn’t even notice she was gone.

Exhibit Ch - Your honor they love each other! (fuffy)
This is a pro-fuffy BTVS rewatch series. Kendra Appreciation Post! Exhibit Ch is a bonus / catchup review about Scott Hope, Kendra, and a few non-Faith episode recos. Long post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. Remember how I wanted Scott Hope to get one more episode so Buffy could prioritize Faith over him? Scott is literally never seen again after 3.03. I wanna review Scott Hope. In exhibit B.10 I mentioned that Scott does seem particularly insightful. Here’s a text montage of all the great Scott moments. Imagine “I will remember you” playing in the background.
“Uh, I'm sorry. I'm a bad liar. It's not good for the soul.” (3.03)
“You're friends with Buffy, right?” - to Faith (3.03)
“Faith has been telling me tall tales.” (3.03)
“my mom says that therapy can be completely helpful.” - to Buffy (3.04)
“I hope you realize I don't actually know these people.” - jokingly about Pete and Debbie (3.04)
“It's just that you never really know what's going on inside somebody.” - about Pete and Debbie after they both die (3.04) Y’all he realized he didn’t actually know them.
“Before we were going out, you seemed so full of life, like a force of nature. Now you just seem distracted all the time, and… I’m really sorry” - dumping Buffy (3.05) Buffy agrees she has been distracted.
2. Scott - in what little we see of him - is very honest. He says he’s a bad liar, he realizes Faith’s stories are at least exaggerated, he’s pro-therapy. And he’s not just honest but he verbalizes it. The way he dumps Buffy, Scott’s so fucking honest. Scott is mentioned again in the show 3 times, twice more in S3 and then once in S7.
3. Remember Buffy’s traumatic therapy experience in 3.04? Well her next therapy session is to Holden the psych major and new vamp she very vaguely remembers from high school. In 7.07 (Conversations with Dead People) Holden says: “Scott Hope said you were gay… He says that about every girl he breaks up with. And then last year, big surprise, he comes out.” Buffy acts surprised at hearing this news, that he called her gay.
4. Granted, I could buy that Scott was repressed and gay in high school. But just because he came out eventually doesn’t mean he was lying. Also the “he says that about every girl” bit sounds OOC to me. Scott was insightful and honest when we saw him. I think this is the show queer-panicking again. “Oh no wait, Buffy can’t be gay! Or queer! Uhm….. yeah let’s add that Scott says that about every girl, oh yeah because he’s actually gay and therefore a lying liar.” Homophobic much? Silly show. Also am I picking and choosing to fit my argument? A little bit.
5. So in summary, Scott Hope is insightful and honest and calls Buffy gay, aka calls Buffy queer. She is so repressed / panicking that she is visually surprised by this in 7.07. Oh Buffy.
Alright, enough about Scott, let’s talk about Kendra!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Kendra is the Jamaican slayer that appears briefly in S2. The BTVS writers room was super white. There are several things they don’t do a great job with IMO, including the LA homeless scenes (3.01), queerness (in general and also being bi just doesn’t exist?), judaism, and sexual assault (*rages at multiple epis*). Sometimes the show is a little misogynistic (but not as bad as Angel, holy fuck that show) and a little racist. Or a lot. The racial diversity of the show is laughable, I mean late 90s California? Even in the LA episode (Anne 3.01) LA is just - mostly white? *cackles* (As a palate cleanser here’s a nice gifset featuring POC characters on BTVS and ATS.)
7. Interesting Black characters are given the short shrift, including Mr. Trick in S3. Kendra deserved better but at least we got a little glimpse of her. If you’re following along at home and but also trying to limit your BTVS intake, I recommend the following non-Faith-appearance catchup episodes: 2.09 (Kendra appears), 2.10 (Kendra heavy), 2.11 (the Ted episode), 2.21 (Becoming Part 1 - Kendra re-appears), 2.22 (Becoming Part 2 - to finish off the season). And 3.01 honestly, because limiting intake can be difficult, LOL.
8. ifeveristoday lays it out in this good short post on Kendra’s role / lore on the show, and how it could be better.
9. herinsectreflections explains Kendra is not one of Buffy’s shadow selves. This gifset by fuffygifs shows the scene parallel.
10. Kendra locks up Angel. Delight in her power over him, the way she laughs at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. I vividly remember the scene where Buffy slow-motion runs through the school, it’s in the show openers. But what I had forgotten until this rewatch was that it’s her running to get back to everyone in the library, after her chat with Angelus in the cemetery, and she finds Kendra dead. (Because of Dru’s hypnosis powers.) My memory of the slow-mo was that Buffy’s so badass, but now it’s tinged with sadness bc she was trying and then fails to help / save her friends, including Kendra. Although really the only long-term damage is Kendra. *grumble*
12. OK the main scene I want to review is when Buffy and Kendra say goodbye in 2.10. Buffy calls herself a freak, which is a real insult in her mind. Kendra reassures her “not the only freak.” And then Buffy goes to hug Kendra, but Kendra doesn’t hug. So Buffy doesn’t. Can you imagine where this didn’t happen, like Kendra is OK with hugs. And then when Buffy meets Faith she hugs her at some point (not right away). Gah! They never hug right? Or Buffy isn't feeling like she caused Kendra's death and she's more open with Faith? (spuffygifs has the full gifset)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gotta admit they did have chemistry.
Tumblr media
OK, a smattering of links to Kendra gifsets I found:
nerd4music
dailybtvs
original andremichaux
andremichaux with tags people left
13. OK, a few thoughts on 3.01 Anne. Already unrealistic when it aired (Buffy somehow affords a studio apt on a waitress salary?) it’s achingly unrealistic now, in terms of money. Like Buffy would need 3 waitressing-type jobs and she’d still have 4 roomates in a craaap 2 BR apt that was falling apart.
14. SMG is giving a master class in acting in SO much of BTVS. The moment when she revolts is brilliant. Check it here (credit to deansmom and harrietvane and isagrimorie) proof that SMG made the acting choice, that it wasn’t that detailed in the script. (read the prev tags too, all of this is brilliant) Also we already know Buffy but this introduction of herself is great, on par with Faith-introducing-herself levels here. (the whole deansmom gifset and tags really sets the mood pre-"aggressive chipper shit talker" Buffy introducing herself)
Tumblr media
I am not great at finding gifs on tumblr. Here are some bonus ones for prev exhibits:
Faith accidentally punching Buffy in 3.04. (Eliza apparently actually punched SMG IRL)
Faith shooting her shot in 3.05
Buffy’s unsure reaction in 3.05
No rating for this exhibit bc there’s no Faith. (Exhibit C had a they love each other rating of 2 out of 5.) Next exhibit will cover episode 3.07 Revelations. Exhibit Ch has been submitted, the prosecution rests for the day.

my theory inb4 the finale:
the mysterious cube at niirdal-sarqet was a pre-age of arcanum training tool for prospective spellcasters.
the design of the cube all points to an exceptionally ancient time. it echoes the same long-forgotten mystique as the age of arcanum. the language embedded in it is qoniira—a language older than celestial. some of the power inside hearkens back to dunamancy, the manipulation of time and space, which believers in the luxon allege existed before everything else along with their deity. it's covered in archaic versions of the gods' symbols—not just the prime deities, all of them (excepting the luxon). betrayer gods included, their iconography neutral and non-menacing, as if the people who created it... didn't recognize them as betrayer gods in the first place.
according to the story of the founding in the EGtW (explorer's guide to wildemount, ch. 1), the betrayer gods were only seen as betrayers after the war with the primordials. before then, the gods were just the gods—the creators. all of them together had created the peoples who formed families and cultures and nations. qoniira likely dates to this age.
mortals didn't know how to spellcast at this point beyond divine gifts. so when the primordials, who had claimed the realm for themselves too, eventually decided to wreak destruction and return the realm to elemental chaos, the mortals were nearly defenceless.
this was when the schism between the gods occurred: the ones who would become the betrayer gods fell apart to grief and rage and wanted to wipe the slate clean; let the primordials destroy it all. the ones who would become the prime deities wanted to wage war and save the world they'd created from the primordials. the prime deities ultimately accomplished this by teaching mortals arcane magic. (this was the factor that led the following era to become the age of arcanum.)
why i think the cube was a tool to teach arcane magic:
it's fairly clear that the cube was meant to be both dangerous and easy to access, the way we saw it in episode 7. the command phrases to open it were in qoniira—this would've been easy for anyone native to the tetrarchy to read. even anyone not native or fluent in qoniira would still be able to figure it out with some dedication, as the exu gang made pretty evident. the lack of barrier to activating the cube tells me that access was intended to be unrestricted.
the stone guardians appeared in response to people physically interacting with it. mechanically, each player had to make a wisdom saving throw every time they came in contact with a new face/platform while the cube was active; if they failed, they took 2 points of damage and had their max hp reduced by that amount as a guardian emerged from the stone, apparently fueled by the player's health.
each time this wisdom save was a success, aabria explicitly described the respective player seeing the stone roil before stopping at their attention, unable to form.
before the cube opened, it had begun to move. fearne deliberately forced her will into the cube to command it to stop moving, rolling a 23 spell attack. it listened to her and didn't move; it broke open in place.
recall the command phrases to activate the cube.
the universe above / the universe within / remember what came before / decide what happens next / provide for all / a shield to protect.
note "decide what happens next." this is a phrase meant to be a command to the reader too. in episode 6, tetrarch thrascuur told the party that power—and magic—was about choice. a person deciding and enacting their will on the world around them to realize their desires. if this is the tetrarchy's basic understanding of magic, this command phrase from the cube seems to be teaching that lesson from the get-go.
it ties into the behavior of the cube exactly. the other phenomenon the players experienced was a gift of a powerful boon from 'a mote of light, possibility.' dorian and dariax gained the ability to control the strength of gravity on their bodies; orym got an additional battle maneuver after viewing time as a path forward, like his future; opal, as a martial caster, had an epiphany on how all magic overlaps and got a pool of hit points to heal people with; and fearne was able to change time by willing a d20 roll to be rerolled after viewing time as a sprawling web that she could pluck apart to her liking.
mechanically, each player rolled a d6 on their first turn to determine their boon—except orym, who received a boon without rolling a d6. orym is also the only party member whose class, battle master fighter, doesn't have spellcasting as a feature. the energy of the cube may be limited for those that don't have a lot of experience with or capacity for magic. those who do, though, can get a variety of different powers. based on the others' results (opal: 1, dorian and fearne: 3, dariax: 4), the boons are likely split into three groups: 1–2 seems to correspond to divine-based powers like healing, while 3–4 seems to be dunamancy-adjacent and therefore possibly arcane. 5–6 is a mystery since no one rolled either number, but a probable hypothesis is elemental/nature-based magic.
so, the activated cube will create a hostile stone guardian derived from the person's relative strength, should they fail to use their will to prevent it. at the same time, they receive a gift of power with a random understanding of how to will it into use. the stone guardians challenge the person in combat—an appropriate context for learning magic to fight primordials. the stone guardians' main tactic is brutal too: aiming for what the person fears most. but an effective way, in a controlled situation, to make someone force their will on the world very hard to stop it.
with all that in mind, the rest of the command phrases begin to make a lot of sense too.
"the universe above / the universe within / remember what came before." the first phrase refers to the gods, echoing the story of the founding in the EGtW and its continual references to their origins "beyond the ashen skies." the second phrase likely refers to the primordials, who lived beneath and within the earth. so in the context of devastation brewing at the hands of the primordials, what would a call to "remember what came before" mean—except to remember that the gods had created all mortal life from the elemental chaos? simply by choosing to shape them into existence?
"decide what happens next" is the method by which the person takes control of the power and magic around them—on their own, like the gods themselves.
then: "provide for all / a shield to protect." these two phrases connect smoothly. they can refer to mortals learning magic in order to protect their communities and loved ones from the primordials. it can also refer to the cube itself and the intentions of the gods who would become the prime deities—providing mortals with the methods to protect each other.
TL;DR: i think the cube is a religious artifact that taught mortals arcane magic because of how old it is and how the cube made a really cool arena full of magically-granted epiphanies on the nature of magic and the universe.
thank you for reading my ted talk :-) hopefully you enjoyed it before aabria (maybe) dunks this post into the garbage on thursday.

hey there! with work and life i fell away from writing and writeblr for a while, so i figured it was time for a good clean scrub and a reboot!

at any given moment i'm rotating through a bunch of stories and crumbs of ideas.
i adore making bonus content for my wips. graphics, moodboards, playlists and memes? you name it i've thought of it.
besides writing i also like baking, tv and movies, comics, the occasional video game and media analysis.

Bad Beets Ch. 3 (11/25-12/1)
Hello fellow degenerates, and welcome back to the Bad Beets Blog! For returning readers who obtain pure, unadulterated entertainment from my gambling misery, thanks for stopping by. If you are new to the Bad Beets Blog, here is how it goes: this is a space for me to rant about my horrible gambling losses of the week. Hope you enjoy the ride!
11/25/19
League: NBA
Bet: 76′ers vs Raptors 1H over 103.5 (-110)
Units: 1.1 to win 1
This one has a quick explanation. 62. No, I am not talking about Chicago Bears offensive lineman, Ted Larsen. 62 is the number of points these two teams scored in the first quarter. I needed a 42 (!!) point second quarter to win the bet. Some of the lowest scoring games in the NBA have quarters of about 50 points. I didn’t even think that this bet would be a sweat.
Tumblr media
Please explain to me how teams with Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Pascal Siakam, and Fred VanVleet only manage to score 38 points in a quarter. Not the way I wanted to start the gambling week. Bad Beet #1 was a real bitch.
Quick aside: There is very little I love more than mid-week, daytime European soccer. Anything and everything from the Champions League to the Belgium Juliper League gets me amped up on a Wednesday at 2:00pm. However, these games also come with great risk of Bad Beet that hurts far more than most. If you lose a heartbreaker on a stoppage-time goal at 3:45pm, you need to wait until at least 6:00pm to bet on any American sports in an effort to drown out that loss. That means that you are stuck at your desk for the last 75 minutes of work, staring at the clock until it hits 5, and the only thing you can think about is Cercle Brugge conceding a 90+7 minute goal to lose by 2 when you had them +1.5. Here are a few Bad Beets that ruined my Tuesday and Wednesday...
11/26/19
League: Champions League
Bet: PSG vs Real Madrid 1H over 1.5 (+106)
Units: 0.9 to win 1
No description needed for this one. FlashScore commentary is incredibly entertaining to read, and they could explain this Bad Beet far more eloquently than I could.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
24 combined shots on goal, 1 penalty kick overturned by V.A.R, and a 1-0 score at halftime. Absolutely brutal. Bad Beet #2 of the week harvested my kidney and sold it on the black market.
11/27/19 and 11/28/19
League: Champions League and Europa League
Bet: Under 3.5 (-133) and Under 3 (-112)
Units: 1.7 to win 1.3 and 1 to win 0.9
Just another episode of “Life is too short to bet the under.” But seriously, I don’t know a single person that loses soccer unders due to stoppage-time goals as often as I do (granted, I don’t know anyone who gambles on as much European soccer as I do, but still).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty ridiculous that Leipzig scored two goals in the final 7 minutes of the game to equalize and send the game over 3.5. Dutch soccer team AZ Alkmaar decided to do the same just 24 hours later, and really made me contemplate never betting another under for the rest of my life. Life is too short to bet the under Bad Beets #3 and #4 of the week.
3/14/2011
Worst Beet of all time.
Tumblr media
Bonus: Hero Win Section
League: Champions League and NHL
Bet: Genk vs Salzburg 1H over 1.5 (-110) and Penguins -1.5 (+155)
Units: 1.1 to win 1 and 0.5 to win 0.8
Genk and Salzburg were scoreless through 42 minutes of the first half. This bet was completely dead. Until...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me looking at my Genk vs Salzburg 1H over 1.5 bet rise from the grave!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is probably my craziest Hero Win of all time. Unfortunately, this bet was only for 0.5 units, but never have I seen a bet so dead come back to life and end up winning in such fashion. The Penguins took an early 2-0 lead against the Canucks, and the bet was looking remarkable to start the game. The Canucks scored the next 4 goals, taking a 4-2 lead, and the Penguins puck line bet had a heart rate of 6 bpm. The Guins got one back 1 minute into the 3rd period, but the Canucks countered with two of their own and it was goodnight moon for my bet. What happened next was pure insanity.
The Penguins scored 4 goals in 10 minutes to take a 7-6 lead. The dangerous thing about betting the puck line is that not only does your team need to win, but they need to win by at least 2 goals. Every puck line bettor’s best friend in a one-goal game is the few minutes at the end of the 3rd period when the losing team pulls their goalie. By the grace of Moses, with the fate of the game already decided, Evgeni Malkin slotted the puck in the Canucks’ empty net, and the Penguins won the game 8-6. Madness. Thoughts and Prayers to anyone that had Canucks +1.5 goals.
11/29/19
League: NCAAB
Bet: Long Beach St. vs Wake Forest 1H under _____ (guess the total, -110)
Units: 1.5 to win 1.4
Call me crazy, but I hate watching a game when I have action on the under. Rooting for teams to not score and play poorly, where is the fun in that? On this Friday evening, I opened my ESPN app and noticed that there were 20 seconds left in the first half of the Long Beach St vs Wake Forest game. I quickly proceeded to click the blue “Watch ESPN” icon that popped up next to the game score and was introduced to the stream with 8 seconds left in the half. Here’s what it looked like on my phone...
Tumblr media
Normally, a player pulling up for a half-court shot with a few tenths of a second left in a half or game, you’re rooting for the ball to go in. However, when you bet an under, you are just infuriated with the player that they even took the shot.
Tumblr media
AND WHEN YOU BET THE 1H UNDER 68 AND ADRIEN WHITE MAKES A “THREE POINT JUMPER” THAT’S ACTUALLY A HALF COURT HEAVE WITH 0.4 SECONDS LEFT IN THE HALF TO SEND THE 1H FROM 66 TO 69, YOU ARE PUNCH-A-WALL FURIOUS! FUCK! BAD BEET #5 COMMITTED A TRIPLE HOMICIDE!
11/30/19
League: Italy Serie A and Turkish Super Lig
Bet: Under 3 (+105) and Under 3 (-110)
Units: 0.75 to win 0.8 and 1.1 to win 1
Tumblr media
Just another few cases of the “Life is too short to bet the under” bug biting me in the ass on international soccer. Stoppage time goals are certified NOT FUN when you bet the under.
Tumblr media
Three Alanyaspor goals in the final 11 minutes to not only put the game at 3 total goals but push it over (and they added 1 for good luck).
11/30/2019
League: Bundesliga
Bet: Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich over 3.5 (-115)
Units: 1.0 to win 0.85
Bayern Munich is an absolute UNIT. They score goals like it is their job. Well, I guess it technically is their job to score goals. Bayern has scored 20 goals in their 7 home games this season. I thought Leverkusen could add at least one and that the over would hit easily. I also took the 1H over 1.5 because I was so confident in my bet. Sure enough, Bayern and Leverkusen combined for 3 goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. EASY. MONEY. I needed just one more goal in the last hour of the game, and here’s the stat sheet from the 2nd half.
Tumblr media
YOU’RE TELLING ME THESE TEAMS CAN COMBINE FOR 19 SHOTS WITH 10 ON TARGET IN JUST THE SECOND HALF ALONE AND ROBERT LEWANDOWKSI CAN’T SCORE ONE MORE MEASLY GOAL?!?!?! WHAT A FUCKING JOKE. Bad Beet #6 was Ted Bundy’s accomplice.
11/30/2019
League: NCAAF
Bet: Southern Miss vs Florida Atlantic 1H over 28 (-115)
Units: 5.75 to win 5
This isn’t the worst beet I’ve ever had in terms of the grandiose level of “sure-win” to “horrible-loss,” but it definitely hurt due to the sheer size of the bet. Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic team has been known to put up some of the quickest scoring drives in the country, and this game was no different. Multiple times they drove down the field and scored a touchdown within minutes. With about 7 minutes left in the half, FAU was leading Southern Miss 17-10. Needing just one more point with half of the quarter remaining, I felt gooooood. I was about to make a profit of 5 units and buy myself a new pair of jeans, but then both offenses forgot they were collegiate football players and played more like Pop Warner football players. Missed FG’s and turnovers make for some quality Conference USA football. Bad Beet #7 was just really unfortunate.
Tumblr media
Missed FG’s and turnovers make for some quality Conference USA football. Bad Beet #7 was just really unfortunate.
11/30/2019
League: Premier League
Bet: Everton +1 (-120)
Units: 1.2 to win 1
This is just a bonus Brutal Push for good luck and to end the block on a fun note. Everton +1 was a winning bet until literally the final kick of the game. For immediate release:
Tumblr media
3 minutes of added time, 90+4 minute goal that survives a VAR check. Just brutal. But at least I didn’t lose the bet. A push is a win!
Bad Beet Count: 7 (with 1 brutal push and 2 hero wins) Bad Beet Unit Swing: 14.2 to win 12.5 (26.7 unit swing)
As always, thanks for reading this week’s rendition of Bad Beets! Please leave a comment, share with your friends, and stay tuned for more Bad Beets if you enjoyed! Let me know some of your Bad Beets of the week to get featured! See you next time.

Loose cannon
It was the middle of the night and he could barely walk straight- granted he had just downed a whole bottle of vodka. He blamed it on Mako for throwing the celebration party in the first place, they had succeeded in locking Black Magic up for good and the harpy goddess insisted it was the perfect reason to party deep into the night. Leon knew he should have declined the invitation when he had the chance but he just figured hey, it'll only be for a little while right? He would only have maybe one or two drinks right? Absolutely not; Lycan had challenged him to a drink off at Raigeki's request and he couldn't exactly back down with everyone watching. Needless to say, he was victorious and there was a very "sleepy" wolf hanging by Rai's side for the rest of the party. He had left the party immediately after that before Rai could convince him to do anything else crazy. Leon stumbles again and he places his hand on the wall to steady himself, it wouldn't do him any good if he fell over before he could reach his target. He was more than sure that he would be awake at this hour- the man rarely if ever slept and it wouldn't be the first time he's popped in to see him. Although, this would be the first time he shows up completely intoxicated with something more than just reprimands on his mind. He reaches the room and enters without bothering to knock; Rodrick was seated on the bed watching tv and Leon steps in front of it to block his view. Rodrick looks up at him, "can I help you?" Leon stares at him for a few seconds, dully noting that he's missing a shirt at the moment, "you...need sex to live right? Just like all the other inccubi." Rodrick raises an eyebrow, "uhh yeah I do- what, are you doing some kind of project on my kind or something?" Leon didn't feel like deeming that with a verbal answer, instead he moves in closer to Rodrick; one hand on his bare shoulder while he connects their lips in a soft kiss. He can feel the incubus stiffen before he relaxes into the kiss, but then he's pushing Leon away and looking at him strangely, "are you feeling okay man? Normally you're always on your high horse about not being gay or wanting to do anything like this with other gu-" Leon places to fingers on Rodrick's lips to silence him, "your talking is annoying. Right now all I want is for you to do me, okay?" Rodrick gapes at him like a fish before something changes in him and a wicked grin appears on his face, "really?~ Well I would love to do you but....why don't we do this my way?" Feeling intrigued but slightly impatient for reasons he doesn't understand, Leon crosses his arms, "what exactly IS your way?" Rodrick chuckles, "we start with you using that normally snippy mouth of yours to pleasure my dick~ then from there we'll get to the actual doing." Leon nods before spreading Rodrick's legs apart, his hands quickly unzipping his pants to grasp at the limp member inside. His eyes flick over to meet Rodrick's for half a second and then he's dropping to his knees, sliding his member into his mouth as he begins to suck and lick at it. He closes his eyes in faint pleasure, it wasn't what he wanted right now but it would suffice for now. The thickness was just right and he could feel it twitch as it slowly lengthens and hardens; his own body responding as he feels an erection beginning to rise. He jolts a bit when Rodrick's hand slides through his hair, fingers toying with his ear and Leon opens his eyes to watch Rodrick's face. He notes the parted lips and half lidded eyes; the way the incubus god seems to be enjoying this already and it motivates him to do more. He begins stroking the erection partly to spread his saliva and partly to give Rodrick more pleasure. Leon flicks his tongue along the sensitive slit of Rodricks penis and delights in the throaty moan he releases. Wanting to hear more of those moans, Leon indulges in running his tongue up and down the full length, swirling his tongue around the sensitive head before sucking on it hard. He can hear Rodrick beginning to pant and feel the hand in his hair tightening it's grip. Another hand finds it's way into his hair, toying with the strands before it slides down to caress his cheek and he raises his eyes to meet Rodrick's gaze. "You're doing great Leon but I think it's time we moved onto the next step, no?" Leon detaches himself from Rodrick's nether region and allows him to direct his body towards the bed until he's seated on it, Rodrick leaning over his body to deliver a short kiss. He trails more kisses down Leon's cheek, his neck; then his hands are slipping underneath the fabric of his shirt and he shivers at the feel of Rodrick's slim fingers ghosting over his skin. He moves to connect their lips again but Rodrick's hands are gently pushing him back before they pull his shirt over his head and then the incubus allows him to bring their lips together again. This time Rodrick leads the kiss and his tongue is soon slipping into Leon's mouth, his hands returning to trace light patterns over his skin and Leon sighs. Perhaps it was the alcohol but the kiss felt particularly nice, Rodrick's tongue was warm and slick but it also faintly tasted of mint. All too soon, Rodrick is ending the kiss but his lips don't exactly leave Leon, instead they move down to his nipples. Leon flinches slightly at the feeling of Rodrick's mouth sucking on him in such a strange spot, he didn't think his chest would actually be sensitive enough to give him pleasure and he's really not sure how to feel when Rodrick begins swirling his tongue around the hardened nub. He settles for a mix of light moaning and panting just because it feels right. Rodrick looks up at him with a smug smirk on his face, "you like that huh?" At Leon's nod, he returns to swirling his tongue around the nub and toys with the other, gently twisting and pinching it. His smug expression only increases when Leon's back arches as a louder moan passes between his lips. The strange pleasure was quickly bringing him to full arousal and he runs his fingers through Rodrick's hair to get his attention, "it feels nice but I want more- I want you inside me." Rodrick jerks away from Leon and snorts, "wait really? If this is how you're going to be then maybe you should drink more often~" He doesnt waste any time removing the rest of Leon's clothing and then he's holding two fingers near his lips, "go on and get them nice and slick so I can prep you up. It'll feel much better if you're loose." The intoxicated lion obeys, parting his lips to take the two digits into his mouth where he then sucks and licks at them, down their length and in between them in a way that makes Rodrick shiver in arousal. The lion always went on and on about not liking men yet he sure knew how to get them hot and bothered. Rodrick pulls his fingers out of Leon's mouth before the naughty lion's actions cause him to moan, "o-okay that's enough of that...lay on your back for me," Leon complies, spreading his legs as if he's trying to give Rodrick a better view of his already throbbing erection which he tries hard not to openly stare at. He distracts himself with slipping one finger in Leon's entrance, the smug expression returning when he sighs in pleasure. Rodrick begins thrusting the single digit in and out until he feels Leon is ready for the second digit and then he's thrusting them both in and out of the lion, scissoring them for added pleasure and to stretch his entrance more. Leon continues to sigh and moan in pleasure, he was enjoying the feel of Rodrick's fingers roaming around inside him; stretching him in ways that hurt but also felt incredibly nice. He wanted more of that strange pleasure, "Rodrick...can you use more fingers or maybe..." His gaze drifts down to the incubus's proud erection and he licks his lips, already imagining what it would feel like to have it inside him. Rodrick chuckles, "you're pretty impatient over there. Give me a second and we can get to the main event." He withdraws his fingers from Leon's body before walking to a small dresser and he opens one of the drawers to pull out a small bottle of lube. Leon's ear twitches, "you had lube...why make me suck on your fingers if you could have used that?" Rodrick shrugs, "wanted to see if you would actually do it. But anyway, can you pull your legs up a bit? It'll make it easier for me to finish prepping you." Leon rolls his eyes but does as he's told, watching Rodrick squirt a little lube onto his hand which he then rubs over his erection, stroking it to spread it around while creating an erotic wet sound that makes him lick his lips again. Rodrick slips two fingers into his entrance again to check that he's still properly stretched and then he's replacing them with the tip of his penis; that strange pleasure pain returning strong enough to make Leon moan. Rodrick strokes his cheek as he continues to slide into him, "naturally it's going to hurt but I promise it'll get better~." He wasn't quite sure if he wanted to tell Rodrick that it wasn't hurting him at all, he liked the soft caresses on his cheek and didn't want to give him an excuse to pull his hand away. Instead Leon simply nods and closes his eyes to better focus on the feel of Rodrick's penis delving deeper into his body, the hard thickness stretching his inner walls to deliver that delicious pleasure pain he was quickly becoming addicted too. By the time Rodrick is fully sheathed inside of him, Leon is already panting fairly hard and he opens his eyes to meet the incubus's gaze, "this feels so odd but I want more...move your body for me." Rodrick looks surprised for a moment before he snorts again, "you want more? Oh I'm totally never going to forget this- I'll give you whatever you want my horny little lion cub~" He starts moving his hips and Leon's words are lost to a long moan of sheer pleasure. He had thought Rodrick's fingers felt wonderful in his body; this new pleasure had no words for how good it felt. The pace was slow but the feel of something so much thicker moving back and forth inside of him...all Leon could do was lay his head back and moan, his mouth hanging open. Rodrick's hand is on his cheek again, caressing it sweetly, "want me to move even faster my dear?~" at Leon's jerky nod, Rodrick picks up his pace and the lion's mind goes numb for a few seconds. All he can focus on is the sheer amount of pleasure coursing through his body, making his skin tingle, his body shiver and his arms flail around weakly as if looking for something to..he doesn't even know what but he can't keep himself still. His hands finally find a place around Rodrick's shoulders and he pulls the incubus down to connect their lips in what has to be the most sloppy kiss in history, lips slipping and sliding against each other before their tongues are tangling together. Saliva being exchanged like fanmail as they breathe each other in. Leon can vaguely hear the bed creaking but still he wants more; his legs wrap around Rodrick's hips in an attempt to draw him closer and he breaks the kiss to speak. His voice sounds more like a series of pants when he moves to speak, "Roddy...m-more..I want..h-harder...please." Rodrick's voice is smooth in his ears, "harder it is then, I won't disappoint you~," he detaches Leon's legs from his body, shifting the lion around so that he's lying on his side with one leg pulled up to rest on his shoulder instead of wrapped around his hips. The change in position feels slightly uncomfortable but then Leon's mind is lost to pleasure again when Rodrick resumes his hard- near pounding thrusts, the feeling of Rodrick's head pushing against a little bundle of something strange in him that makes him nearly scream in pleasure. Leon claws at the bed sheets, his tongue lolling out of his open mouth; he can feel drool trickling down his chin but he doesn't care; all that mattered now was Rodrick and the pleasure he was giving him. Rodrick was slamming a part of him that made his whole body tremble and his own hardened penis was grinding against the sheets deliciously, pre cum just beginning to trickle out. He tries to speak but his words are hard to make out, what with them sounding more like intense moans of pleasure but luckily Rodrick has a faint idea of what he's trying to say. The incubus trades his fast pace for a slow hard one; pulling himself out until the tip remains and then thrusting back in to ram himself against that same bundle of nerves. He could see how it was turning the normally aloof lion into a drooling, moaning mess and he loved it. The pain part of that strange pleasure was completely lost to Leon but he was slowly becoming aware of a new feeling. Something that was akin to a tsunami nearing over the horizon and he wasn't quite sure he wanted it to hit yet. Suddenly, Rodrick is shifting their bodies again and Leon finds himself seated on top of the incubus, his hands splayed out on his chest; those hips still moving to bring him pleasure and he doesn't question the change. Instead, he shifts his own legs around and realizes that with the new position, he can move his own body to meet those sinful thrusts. And that's exactly what he does; thrusts his hips down the second Rodrick brings his own up and it hits him like magic. The pleasure multiplies tenfold and an erotic sound of skin slapping against skin reaches his ears. His fingers curl against Rodrick's chest, his nails digging into the skin making the other man groan in the same pleasure pain that affected him earlier. Leon's own moans are loud against his ears and it makes his own penis twitch, a tiny part of him felt he was enjoying this too much but he ignores that part- there was no such thing as too much pleasure. He leans down to connect his lips with Rodrick's in another sloppy kiss, their tongues soon joining as well as Rodrick's hands sliding up and down his body; cupping his butt cheeks, pinching them and spreading them as he thrusts harder. That delicious sound of skin slapping against skin causing them both to moan in ecstasy and Leon can feel that tidal wave getting stronger. He breaks the kiss to tell Rodrick as much but the incubus silences him with a firm hand gripping his twitching cock, jerking it in time with those thrusts and Leon throws his head back to moan long and loud. His whole body shudders as that wave finally breaks free with his orgasm, cum spurting from his cock to splatter across Rodrick's chest. Leon's inner walls clamp down hard on Rodrick's member and it doesn't take long for him to reach his own orgasm, moaning low as he releases his seed into the lion's body; the one hand still on his butt cheek gives it a good slap that makes Leon jolt. Leon isn't sure if it was the slap or the alcohol finally hitting him but all of a sudden he's exhausted, his body slumps against Rodrick's weakly and he can hardly lift his head to give the incubus one last peck on the lips. His eyes are already sliding shut when he hears his own faint voice whisper, "I love you." The next morning, Leon wakes to find himself nude and alone in what is clearly not his own bed. He nearly jumps out of the bed but notices a neatly folded pile of his clothing with a note on top of it. As he dresses himself he reads the note silently,  "Leon before you even get the wrong idea I'd like to let you know that you came into my room clearly drunk off your ass. I tried to convince you to go to sleep but you were having none of it...until you vomited all over yourself and passed out. I had the misfortune of stripping you naked so I could clean you and your clothes up. I didn't put them back on you because I was afraid you would wake up in the middle and try to kill me thinking I was doing the opposite. Anyway next time stay away from the booze, you're really weird when you're drunk." Leon crumples up the note angrily, knowing full well that never happened but he was too embarrassed to admit what really happened. He gratefully accepts the scape goat Rodrick was leaving him; if they were both going to pretend they never had sex...who was he to say any different? After all, he WAS extremely intoxicated last night.

SCOTUS, via splintered 5-4 ruling, decides that supervised release revocation procedures used in Haymond are unconstitutional
<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Via a divided opinion thanks to the separate vote of Justice Breyer, the Supreme Court this morning ruled in favor of a federal criminal defendant's claim that the procedures used to revoke his federal supervised release term and send him back to prison was unconstitutional in US v. Haymond, No. 17-1672 (S. Ct. June 26, 2019) (available here).  Here is the vote/opinion break down in the case:</p> <blockquote> <p>GORSUCH, J., announced the judgment of the Court and delivered an opinion, in which GINSBURG, SOTOMAYOR, and KAGAN, JJ., joined. BREYER, J., filed an opinion concurring in the judgment. ALITO, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which ROBERTS, C. J., and THOMAS and KAVANAUGH, JJ., joined.</p> </blockquote> <p>Here is how Justice Gorsuch's lead plurality opinion starts:</p> <blockquote> <p>Only a jury, acting on proof beyond a reasonable doubt, may take a person’s liberty. That promise stands as one of the Constitution’s most vital protections against arbitrary government. Yet in this case a congressional statute compelled a federal judge to send a man to prison for a minimum of five years without empaneling a jury of his peers or requiring the government to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. As applied here, we do not hesitate to hold that the statute violates the Fifth and Sixth Amendments.</p> </blockquote> <p>Because Justice Breyer's fifth vote is essential to the result here, his short concurring opinion demands quoting at length. So:</p> <blockquote> <p>I agree with much of the dissent, in particular that the role of the judge in a supervised-release proceeding is consistent with traditional parole. See post, at 9–10 (opinion of ALITO, J.). As 18 U. S. C. §3583 makes clear, Congress did not intend the system of supervised release to differ from parole in this respect. And in light of the potentially destabilizing consequences, I would not transplant the <em>Apprendi</em> line of cases to the supervised-release context. See post, at 4–5....</p> <p>Nevertheless, I agree with the plurality that this specific provision of the supervised-release statute, §3583(k), is unconstitutional.  Revocation of supervised release is typically understood as “part of the penalty for the initial offense.”  <em>Johnson v. United States</em>, 529 U. S. 694, 700 (2000).  The consequences that flow from violation of the conditions of supervised release are first and foremost considered sanctions for the defendant’s “breach of trust”—his “failure to follow the court-imposed conditions” that followed his initial conviction—not “for the particular conduct triggering the revocation as if that conduct were being sentenced as new federal criminal conduct.”  United States Sentencing Commission, Guidelines Manual ch. 7, pt. A, intro. 3(b) (Nov. 2018); see post, at 12–13.  Consistent with that view, the consequences for violation of conditions of supervised release under §3583(e), which governs most revocations, are limited by the severity of the original crime of conviction, not the conduct that results in revocation.  See §3583(e)(3) (specifying that a defendant may as a consequence of revocation serve no “more than 5 years in prison if the offense that resulted in the term of supervised release is a class A felony, [no] more than 3 years in prison if . . . a class B felony,” and so on).</p> <p>Section 3583(k) is difficult to reconcile with this understanding of supervised release.  In particular, three aspects of this provision, considered in combination, lead me to think it is less like ordinary revocation and more like punishment for a new offense, to which the jury right would typically attach.  First, §3583(k) applies only when a defendant commits a discrete set of federal criminal offenses specified in the statute.  Second, §3583(k) takes away the judge’s discretion to decide whether violation of a condition of supervised release should result in imprisonment and for how long.  Third, §3583(k) limits the judge’s discretion in a particular manner: by imposing a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of “not less than 5 years” upon a judge’s finding that a defendant has “commit[ted] any” listed “criminal offense.”</p> <p>Taken together, these features of §3583(k) more closely resemble the punishment of new criminal offenses, but without granting a defendant the rights, including the jury right, that attend a new criminal prosecution.  And in an ordinary criminal prosecution, a jury must find facts that trigger a mandatory minimum prison term. <em>Alleyne</em>, 570 U. S., at 103.</p> <p>Accordingly, I would hold that §3583(k) is unconstitutional and remand for the Court of Appeals to address the question of remedy.  Because this is the course adopted by the plurality, I concur in the judgment.</p> </blockquote> <p>And here is how Justice Alito's dissent starts:</p> <blockquote> <p>I do not think that there is a constitutional basis for today’s holding, which is set out in JUSTICE BREYER’s opinion, but it is narrow and has saved our jurisprudence from the consequences of the plurality opinion, which is not based on the original meaning of the Sixth Amendment, is irreconcilable with precedent, and sports rhetoric with potentially revolutionary implications.  The plurality opinion appears to have been carefully crafted for the purpose of laying the groundwork for later decisions of <em>much</em> broader scope.</p> </blockquote>WOW! I am surprised and disappointed that the Chief Justice and Justices Thomas and Kavanaugh all sign off on Justice Alito's dissent. I thought for sure one or more of them would be inclined to vote with the defendant in this case on at least a narrow ground. But it seems Justice Gorsuch was so eager to swing for the Fifth and Sixth Amendment fences, he could not get any of these other Justices to stay on his team in this notable case. I will need a few hours, probably a few days, to figure out just what this means now and for the future of Fifth and Sixth Amendment sentencing jurisprudence. For now, I will just say WOW again.</div> from RSSMix.com Mix ID 8247011 https://sentencing.typepad.com/sentencing_law_and_policy/2019/06/scotus-via-splintered-5-4-ruling-decides-that-supervised-release-revocation-procedures-used-in-haymo.html via http://www.rssmix.com/
