This Icon Picspam of Wallace/Willis, Michael and the American Chosen Children/Digidestined (as well as Mimi who lived in New York temporarily in 02) is a tribute to American Independence Day.

All the hope lines can be divided into "Sleipmon" and "AncientMegatheriummon". For the sake of freshness though, I only used each once. Twice if you count Sleipmon X.

I don't think I need to explain why I gave Patamon/Pegasmon Indaramon and Sleipmon. Horse. You'll find most of these follow that kind of logic, the problem was when I didn't have that option. I also considered making the ultimate Goddramon as a nod to Adventure 2020, that's a good alternative.

Tailmon/Goatmon get Mephismon because it's a goat and then AncientMegatheriummon because a musk ok is a big goat and its horns and hooves match Goatmon's the closest. I could have done Gulfmon for the ultimate too.

V-mon was the hardest because what the fuck is up with Sagittarimon? It looks like a perfect-level jogress of Fladramon and Lighdramon. I've run into armor digimon that were tough to work with, but at least they still made sense to use as adult stages. Its lore comes with a baked-in line of Centalmon->Sagittarimon->Sleipmon that I can't use because it places Sagittarimon as the perfect. Sleipmon X has its bow drawn in the art, and I threw in Assaultmon just because it's another centaur whose lower half has nondescript claw feet and it shoots projectiles. I'm not a fan of this one, it was an impossible challenge and I'd like to see what KarnEX thinks up for it.

Hawkmon/Moosemon is a fun one because we have very rapidly run out of artiodactyl digimon. I'm lucky we were recently given another deer in the form of Cernumon, but there's nothing good to bridge them together. As weird as it is to use WereGarurumon as the perfect, Moosemon is white and blue with striped patterns and "feathers" sticking out of its back like the Garurumon family. If you don't like it, the best alternative I have is Mammon as another icy megafauna.

Armadimon/Sheepmon become Pajiramon and Belphemon, this one was easy. Sheepmon and Pajiramon both have sleep/dream powers, and our perpetually-asleep demon lord of sloth has ram horns.

Wormmon/Bullmon becoming Vajramon is another no-brainer, but where do we go from here without any more cow digimon? Well, Olegmon has horns, armor, and dual-wields bladed weapons. I don't love it, but options are slim when we keep getting railroaded.

I can't believe that Michael is not blonde anymore. And I know it's him because of Seadramon, and all of those kids here were in 02 worldwide arc NYC part too so it would've been weird if hey just dumped a brand new character here.

Michael's partner Betamon evolves to Seadramon in 02, on-screen, two times (yes, in the NYC part of the three-part mini-arc too) so I know this kid is him.

Also the girl next to him is Maria, her partner, Centalmon, is behind FlareLizardmon (Sam's partner) right there. But idk if her skin is light now or not -- the episode in 02 was at night and her skin wasn't that tanned like Lou's and Daisuke's imo?

Heck, they even slapped Tatum (is that her name, can't remember well?) with Airdramon here...!!

i'm sad Tortomon is not here, but it would be hard to place it there too...

Do you know if there actually are any donkey-based Digimon? Cause you know, Donkey Madness from the English dub.

I haven’t seen any donkey related Digimon. I tried to look, and the only ones I could find that are close to a donkey are the horse Digimon (Unimon, Sleipmon, Pegasmon, Centalmon, etc). I guess the closest Digimon to a donkey would be Indaramon. It’s mostly a horse, but I can see a little part of them being a donkey. I do wish there were more Digimon out there that were based off of a donkey now!

Game Journal: Tag Tamers - Entry #01

Well, here it is. The most relevant Wonderswan Ryo game as far as the Adventure timeline is concerned, and the backstory for Ken Ichijouji in Digimon Adventure 02. It’s also apparently the highest rated game of the series, along with Brave Tamer, so I’m excited for this playthrough.

Some context before starting: this game came out during the Chimeramon episodes of 02, the final part of the Digimon Emperor arc. As such, this was the very first time the digimon fanbase saw Ken Ichijouji as a hero, right as his villain persona in the series came crashing down and before we got to see his real personality.

As before, given the ammount of exposition in the intro, I’ll be covering the tutorial as a separate entry before going to a regular 1-entry-per-2-hours routine.

First thing I’d like to mention is the music for this title card. It’s an 8-bit version of Break-Up, and it’s so much more hype-inducing than the one from the previous game. As you may have noticed, this game is in black-and-white, since the previous one was only in color because it was a later remake.

After an opening narration summarizing the events of the previous game, the story opens with Ryo visiting his friend Ken Ichijouji, who has asked him to come because his computer is behaving weirdly. It’s interesting because this implies Ryo is a relatively computer-savvy kid, which didn’t really come across in Anode/Cathode Tamer. Anyway, Ken says there’s a strange creature in his screen. Ryo looks at it and sees...

Yep, the events of Our War Game. Ken has been watching for a while, at least enough to know Diaboromon didn’t look like that before. The duo sees WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon be defeated, at which point Ryo panics and starts running around the room.

Ken is understandably confused as to why his friend is acting so emotionally to some video game stream, but Ryo tells him that those creatures are real, that they are in an actual fight. Ken still doesn’t quite get it, but asks him what they can do to help. Ryo gets the idea of sending an e-mail, presumably at the same time a lot of other children around the world do so too, and of course you know the result:

Omegamon defeats Diaboromon easily, and Taichi thanks everyone who helped. Ryo finally relaxes, after which Ken asks for further confirmation that all of that was real.

A day passes and Ryo visits Ken again. Once again, a digimon has appeared in his computer screen. There’s a sudden light as a D-3 flashes in the screen, and once everything returns to normal, this is what welcomes them:

Yep. After spending an entire game with a borrowed partner, Ryo finally gets his own partner, V-mon. The digimon immediately asks for his help, and Ryo answers very calmly that he expected this to happen, and asks if Diaboromon is still around. V-mon confirms this, and takes them all to the Digital World. Why Ken was included in this beats me.

Ryo greets Gennai, Pixiemon and Agumon. Gennai is far more amiable here than in the previous game, immediately complimenting Ryo. V-mon interrupts the greetings and asks Gennai to get to the point. Apparently this is a very common ocurrance, because Gennai takes it in stride, only remarking that V-mon is as impatient as ever.

According to Gennai, the flood of information from the internet to the Digital World is straining it and causing problems, initially only reflected as digimon devolving to Child-level, but increasing over time. Gennai and the rest believe this is because of a Diaboromon that escaped the previous fight, and has asked for the Chosen Children’s aid. They plan to wait for Taichi to arrive, but V-mon is impatient and tells Ryo they can’t handle it themselves. Ryo agrees, and the two go to look for Diaboromon against Gennai’s and Agumon’s wishes.

They also leave Ken alone in a new world with some people he doesn’t know, so... what an excellent friend you are, Ryo.

We cross a portal into the affected area, finding ourselves in the village from the first game, completely destroyed. It’s a low-key chilling moment, specially given the music used is the same as in the first game. Even the mountains have been crushed. Ryo and V-mon go to the same tree-cave where they fought Devimon, the only place in the entire area that hasn’t been affected in the slightest.

The combat mechanics have changed, this time around being far more traditional RPG, rather than tactical one. We are allowed a team of three that can be situated in 6 different positions, something that would be refined in the later Digimon Story games for the Nintendo DS. Anyway, we have two different fights with Baby-levels before facing Diaboromon. We manage to defeat him, except...

Except it was all a ruse, of course. Millenniummon, somehow still alive, was in control from the start, using the lone Diaboromon as a lure to get Ryo away from the others. Millenniummon uses an explosion on Ryo and V-mon, simultaneously affecting the group in the village right as Taichi and Agumon arrive (though both Gennai and Ken seem to feel something is off before it happens). Ryo and V-mon awaken in the village, where they find Pixiemon, Taichi and Agumon, but Ken and Gennai are nowhere to be seen. What is more, Taichi and Agumon appear to be frozen, as if they were stone.

Meanwhile, the explosion knocked Ken to the forest, unconscious. Wormmon finds him, and the boy soon wakes up. The digimon tells him that he’s looking for the Chosen Child, but the boy tells him that’s not him but Ryo. Wormmon asks him if he’s the Ken Gennai has asked him to retrieve. Ryo answers that he is, and asks him if he can lead him back to Gennai. They arrive at a tunnel in a tree, and Wormmon says they have nothing to fear because Ken is a Chosen Child.

The dungeons now have names, and it’s certainly interesting to have both the dungeons Ken has to go through have names that relate to, well, loneliness, which Ken’s flashbacks in 02 tell us is not an unfamiliar feeling for him.

Anyway, we go through both dungeons and arrive at the village, where they find Gennai and the frozen statues of Taichi and Agumon. The duo ask what has happened, and Gennai tells them his theory: Millenniummon has used his powers to split the world in two, with which he planned to separate Taichi and Ryo. Somehow, Ken was stuck on a separate world from Ryo, while Taichi and Agumon are somehow between worlds, frozen.

Upon hearing this, Ken is convinced he’s at fault somehow. Gennai, in true Gennai fashion...

Tells him that’s ridiculous and that this is no way Ken’s fault! I have to say, I’m liking him better this time around. He’s actually acting like the mentor figure he’s supposed to be.

Ken is comforted, at least temporarily, and the group start making plans to help Ryo however they can. Wormmon tells Ken he’ll join him, and Gennai tells him he’s truly one of the Chosen Children.

Now inside Gennai’s house, the human-like being tells them to go see Centalmon before they leave, since he can rebuilt the Armor Digimentals when given the necessary pieces. We go to his forgery and find:

That he can forge the Light and Hope Digimentals! These can increase our defenses against specific types of attack and, of course, enable Armor evolutions when paired with the right digimon. Armed with the two, we leave the village to start our adventure.

This is it for the prologue. I have to say, I like how they’ve set up the story in this game much better than in the last one, and every character comes accross as stronger here (except Agumon, who has like 1 or 2 lines before being statue-d). See you next time for the first part of the adventure!

My Commentary: Steve was confirmed by Toei to be a Jew in the “Digimon Memorial Book”, published after 02 had ended. However, It is important to remember that Steve would likely not be celebrating “only” Inter-faith X-mas here (if Steve did join in), but ALSO Hanukkah / Chanukah earlier in the month and previous month. Chanukah in 2002, however, was November 29th ~ December 7th, and these scenes took place closer to December 25th. But that doesn’t mean Steve wouldn’t have noted Chanukah at all earlier that year, and it’s good to note that when we’re discussing 02′s “real-world based” “timeline”!

Tatum was also confirmed to be Irish-American in the Memorial Book. She is partnered to an Airdramon.

Child Digimon: Don’t Stop, Pata Pata

We continue our look at Patamon’s line, with, well. Patamon. Everyone’s favorite batpig debuted in the third version of the original virtual pet, but while he still evolved from Poyomon and Tokomon, the evolution most associated with him appeared in a much earlier virtual pet in a manner similar to Piyomon and Birdramon’s relationship.

Aside from being a main character in Adventure, Patamon has been a recurring mainstay throughout the franchise, and is also a major supporting character in Digimon Frontier as well as having semi-prominent guest appearances in other media.

Anyway, let’s get down to it, before poor little Patamon tires himself out.

A Mammal Digimon characterized by its large ears. It is able to fly through the air by using them as large wings, but because it only goes at a speed of 1 km/h, it is said that it is definitely faster walking. However, it's very popular because its appearance is cute when it is desperately flying (though it seems that it doesn't feel the same). Due to its extremely obedient personality, its trainers are well-defended. Also, even though Patamon doesn't wear a Holy Ring, it is able to exhibit its hidden holy power, and it appears to have inherited the genes of ancient Digimon. Its Special Moves are sucking in air then spewing an air shot out in one burst (Air Shot), and striking the opponent with its large ears (Hane Binta).

You’ll notice I included two profiles here. I’ll get into why in a minute.

Patamon’s design is pretty simple. He has a beanbag-shaped body and a pair of wings, complete with tiny, nubby toes. If he were smaller and you didn’t know any better, you might mistake the little guy for a Baby Level Digimon. He’s very clearly designed to be cute in a more general sense, in the way that might appeal equally to boys and girls if you thought about it in a marketing sense. Patamon looks like he was designed to be a turned into a huggable plush toy from day one.

The lore also gives him poor flight abilities, despite his wings being his main feature. Piyomon’s profile made it Patamon’s rival in the bad flier department, but aside from a single early episode, Adventure didn’t really capitalize on this much, with both Piyomon and Patamon being rather good at it for the majority of the series.

Now, why the two profiles? Well, to start off, the first one is Patamon’s current Reference Book profile, which was utilized for the D-3, the Digivice toy for Digimon Adventure 02. The second one is from Patamon’s original profile for the third virtual pet, and as you can see, there are some things missing. The Reference Book/D-3 profile expands the original, incorporating stuff that began with Patamon’s anime appearance, such as the dormant holy powers, and stuff that was newly relevant, like it being an ancient species descendant, which would be the reason for why it could Armor Evolve.

I’ve talked a lot in these reviews about “what could have been”. But Patamon’s original profile especially gets my mind going. I stated earlier that in his original virtual pet, Patamon couldn’t evolve into Angemon; that guy first showed up in the same virtual pet as Gabumon. Patamon wouldn’t get the ability to evolve into Angemon until Digimon World.

I’ve never seen Piyomon’s original v-pet profile, so I don’t know if that stuff about wanting to evolve into Birdramon and not wanting to evolve into Cockatrimon was there in the original draft. But nothing like Patamon alluding that it’d be evolving into Angemon is in that original profile, which leads me to suspect that wasn’t always the original intention. Rather, I see a strong connection between Patamon and another Digimon that first appeared in the same virtual pet as it did.

Unimon is the easier Digimon to raise of all the Digimon in the third v-pet, much like Greymon is for Agumon, while neighboring Centalmon has more Tyrannomon-esque difficult raising requirements. What’s more, it carries on Patamon’s association with flight, is a mammalian creature same as Patamon is, and its “Holy Shot” attack is pretty similar conceptually to Patamon’s “Air Shot”.

This is all speculation, but if Patamon was designed with Unimon being his more optimal evolution, why did they go with Angemon instead? HolyAngemon didn’t exist yet, so there wasn’t really a dearth of material that made him the better option. If I had to guess, I’d imagine that Angemon both won out in cool factor, and because the “small, weak-looking creature evolving into something special like an angel” seemed like a more compelling story-line.

But again, this is just speculation, and I have a lot of material to cover in Angemon’s review tomorrow (with someone else), so I wanted to cover it here instead. Let’s get on to Patamon’s score...

FOUR STARMONS! Patamon is one of the Adventure characters to win out in cuteness, but I don’t think he’s quite worthy of hitting the Five Starmon slot.

For @digifakeweek‘s theme of Ultimate/Mega level, I present Ropymon’s final evolution, RangerGeotrumon! As I’ve mentioned before he’s a gun-toting beetle-taur. RangerGeotrumon is the most serious of Ropymon’s forms. While he still talks in a western accent, it comes across far more as intimidating. RangerGeotrumon is relentless, extremely tough and surprisingly quick on his four feet. When he chases a villain down, he doesn’t give up until his quarry is behind bars.

RangerGeotrumon’s design is a mix of Centalmon, Beelzebumon and HerakleKabuterimon. He should have two guns, but I’m so bad at drawing guns, so just imagine he has the other on a holster or something XD Incidentally, this design comes from all the way back in December 2014 - I had drawn it in one of my portable sketchbooks.

So far Lizmet (@/elecmon) and I just tried to guess some and:

The orange-brownish-red eyes at the corner might be a Caprimon. (using the Toei version of it so you can notice it could be a Caprimon) Caprimon can be part of a Centalmon line if i remember correctly? So I suspect this might be Maria's partner.

The round green ones might be a Pyocomon.

Pyocomon is very known for being the baby form for Sora's Piyomon.

BUT, It could work for Tatum's Airdramon too imo.

There's no round blue eyes baby digi so far (the ones between supposed PetitMeramon and supposed Pyocomon), so I believe it's a YukiAgumon/SnowAgumon. And it might be Steve's partner because...

EDIT: PUKAMON HAS ROUND BLUE EYES AND MATCHES WITH THE MYSTERIOUS ONES IN THE BUSH. But still fair game for YukiAgumon → Yukidarumon so yeah. Nothing changes here.

Which leaves us with... what mon those other blue eyes belong to for Lou's Tortomon partner. 🤨🤔

THEY (Maria's, Lou's, Steve's, Sam's and Tatum's digimon) ALL HAVE CHILD/BABY FORMS!!? And I'm just realizing it now?!

Who would like to join me and check all the [check's the number of existent digimon so far] 1,500 digimon and see which of those eyes fit them?
