I wholeheartedly cosign because if people can't release their darkest, craziest, most random, most sexual, wildest, fantastical, depraved and confused selves in the safe space that is fiction, where can they? I always think this sort of thinking is childish or naive because bad things will happen whether it's easily found or not. Plain and simple. Just because you don't actively know about it, that doesn't make the "bad things" go away.
Humans are all complicated with their own thoughts and feelings and physical conditions and mental states. The human brain is a literal super computer that tries it's hardest to prepare for any eventuality or do passive mental exercises that don't get constrained to what's "legal". Sorry if that's hard to hear for someone but it's true. No one can flex a muscle to stop the bad thoughts (tm). Many people don't have others they feel they can talk to about these things, can't afford therapy, don't feel like they belong with the people they interact with most, are afraid of or disgusted with themselves, etc. The only place they can turn is fiction.
That sort of "everyone should just be good and think good and do good all the time, especially MY kind of good" thinking is what creates extremes, worst case scenarios and seriously disturbed individuals irl. As in, in real life. Where real people live and can be impacted or harmed or traumatized or whatever you can think of.
Most people can't work through traumas and nightmares and kinks and daydreams and religion and moral questioning safely if not in fiction. Kids that don't have safe spaces to experiment end up with extreme views and can possibly can harm themself or others. Someone with a worrying fetish that expresses it in stories or art may not then seek to actually force those fantasies on others in reality. Someone who's attracted to a traditionally bad sort of person depicted in media won't have a chance to understand why they may seek that sort of person out in fiction but not in real world relationships. Someone can't explore if they may not be straight without judgement etc. etc. all the way down.
I would much rather a person draw or write or say something I'm personally uncomfortable with then hear about a rising statistic due to repression. This coming from a person who was raised in very strict religious spaces, seen friends and others with similar religious upbringing go absolutely insane once given any sort of freedom, dealt with many horrible types of traumas and am still saddled with overwhelming guilt for just existing.
Fiction is where I can forget and only feel the kind of different I want to feel. Don't tell me or others that you don't like what we do or believe. Just use filters. Period.
"You can't ship that!"
lol what are you gonna do, climb inside my mind and shut off the imagination switch?

I think it's genuinely concerning how sex-negative we, as a society, are becoming. (This post brought to you by a few tweets I saw)
Does no one else think it's genuinely worrying how if you even find a fictional character attractive, you're called a gooner, or a degenerate, or some other pejorative to indicate that being sexual in any way is gross and nasty and yucky? Why does art suddenly lack artistic value because it's sexual in nature? Why are we so obsessed with associating a core feature of the human condition with shame and guilt?
Even more concerning is that it isn't just some niche little group of people on the internet, it's rampant. Every nook and cranny of the internet has these people, ready and raring to call you names if you dare speak anything slightly not-safe-for-work.
Like the people on twitter openly calling trans women degenerates and freaks for having an incest/rape kink (I've seen this one A LOT), because how can you claim to be an ally, or lgbt-friendly, or a feminist, but get mad at a woman expressing her sexuality? Why does sexuality gross you out to the point you feel the need to demean people over it?
And where does it end? Are we going to start calling women who dress a little too revealing 'sluts' again? Are we going to ban sex scenes in movies? Start preaching abstinence, say sex outside of marriage is bad, that lust is immoral, and being gay is a sin?
I'm sure that a large part of the problem is that these people are generally children, and still in the "sex is gross" phase, but I know that's not the case with all of them. I'm just worried for the future, because all the people saying these things are just reinventing conservatism under the guise of progressivism, and are (intentionally or unintentionally, I'm not sure) causing more harm than good.
I know we talk about puritanism and stuff all the time, but in my opinion, it's gotten to a point even the actual puritans didn't get to.

one of the things about being an educator is that you hear what parents want their kids to be able to do a lot. they want their kid to be an astronaut or a ballerina or a politician. they want them to get off that damn phone. be better about socializing. stop spending so much time indoors. learn to control their own temper. to just "fucking listen", which means to be obedient.
one of the things i learned in my pedagogy classes is that it's almost always easier to roleplay how you want someone to act. it's almost always easier to explain why a rule exists, rather than simply setting the rule and demanding adherence.
i want my kids to be kind. i want them to ask me what book they should read next, and i want to read that book with them so we can discuss it. i want my kid to be able to tell me hey that hurt my feelings without worrying i'll punish them. i want my kid to be proud of small things and come running up to me to tell me about them. i want them to say "nah, i get why this rule exists, but i get to hate it" and know that i don't need them to be grateful-for-the-roof-overhead while washing the dishes. i want them to teach me things. i want them to say - this isn't safe. i'm calling my mom and getting out of this. i want them to hear me apologize when i do fuck up; and i want them to want to come home.
the other day a parent was telling me she didn't understand why her kid "just got so angry." this woman had flown off the handle at me.
my dad - traditional catholic that he is - resents my sentiment of "gentle parenting". he says they'll grow up spoiled, horrible, pretentious. granola, he spits.
i am going to be kind to them. i am going to set the example, i think. and whatever they choose become in the meantime - i'm going to love them for it.

genuine ethical dilemma posed by Xue Yang's existence:
if, in a society wherein sect leaders massacre their enemies over politics, the only person being put on trial for a massacre is the one without a sect, are his CRIMES actually illegal, or just his class?

I've said it before and by god I will say it again
self censorship is doing exactly what the fascists want. do not asterisk yourself or use euphemisms (e.g. motherf*cker, unalive, etc) because you believe that you'll get slapped on the wrist by whatever platform you're on
if said platform DOES remove or otherwise penalize you for using words like fuck, kill, suicide, rape, etc, this is not a platform you want to be on. don't put power in the fascist's hands in the name of accumulating likes, upvotes, and shares

Saw the director of Addicted Heroin Thailand had posted this on his Facebook account:
Tumblr media
This man looked at the show that was the tipping point of the first big anti-gay censorship wave in China in the 2010s, and decided to remake it and intentionally self-censor, just to see if he could attract the "Chinese BL is superior because it doesn't rely on kisses or NC scenes to show the emotions" audience to Thai BL?
Tumblr media
I am so mad about this.

“Just block and move on” I want people to feel humiliated for the things they post
Consider, then, that you need to re-evaluate your morals. How would YOU feel if a pack of folks were constantly at your shoulder, insulting you and your interests and your blog content, telling you that you're worthless and should die, belittling you, telling you you should be friendless? Be a pretty scummy life, I imagine.
So let's be nicer to others. The world is better that way. Negativity has no place in this world, do your part in minimizing it.

If the writers and the actors both say “this character would have been queer but the censors wouldn’t allow it”, then the character IS queer.
