There are patterns in everything, in the whole of Nature, from the way the stars turn in the heavens to the whorl of a shell or the petals of a flower and the way leaves arrange themselves about a twig. There are forces, hidden forces. If I can discover what they are, how they operate, I will have my hands upon the levers of creation and can work them myself.

Journal d’une Sorcière, Celia Rees
Tumblr media

Miss Graham's Cold War Cookbook by Celia Rees
Miss Graham’s Cold War Cookbook by Celia Rees was a May 2024 book club choice that didn’t end up winning. This is historical fiction and my first book by the author. What does an English school teacher spinster in 1945 Britian do to change the course of her life? This is the driving question that sets up the entire novel. The answer, without giving away the contents of the novel, is sign-up to…

WinterCon Is On This Weekend @ Resorts World Casino
If you’re brand-new to our web-based publication then let me tell you just how much I love hitting the comic book and science fiction conventions that take place in New York City. Not only has PiercingMetal been a regular media attendee for the massive New York Comic Con, Anime NYC and Toy Fair conventions for many years but we also lend the love to smaller scaled events like the Big Apple Comic…

the magnus protocol episodes 4 through 7 — my live reactions not clickbait
magp 4
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD IS THIS THE STATEMENT AND/OR ORIGIN OF ALFRED GRIFTER
omg i love how the literal only reason for hearing statements from the 1800s is gwen being behind on her work
ALSO I FRICKING LOVE THE MAGNUS PROTOCOL THEME
Oh my lord you know it's a good sidequel when you can already feel the itch to relisten to everything you just listened to
magp 5
Ok i do not know whether we say "a blast from the past" in America but i have heard that phrase like five times now from Brits all on the RQ magnus feed so im wondering if that's just an alexander j newall thing or !!! what (love it tho. i love it)
faith the unholy trinity referenced???? faith the unholy trinity!!!!!!?
aint no way he won the contest by coincidence LMAO
OOOH THIS IS SUCH A COOL FORMAT!!! ahh ... just how many ideas do they have for digital first-person storytelling mediums?? cuz with every new one i am fascinated
i wonder if jonny just flipped between soft speaker and robot while recording or if "[UNINTELLIGIBLE]" is a digital insert. if it's the latter i am VERY impressed although it's characteristic of jonny at this point lol
OOOooooOOoOoO personal relation is always extra spookyyy
i am also extremely impressed by the similarity in writing style. i can see it (in a good way) now that i'm looking harder, but i would never have guessed jonny didn't write all the episodes
also i just love how alex and jonny swap announcer roles sometimes (jonny as credits, alex as title/episode) for tmp
NOTE TO SELF: check out the cellar letters!!!!! omfg!!! it sounds fire!!!!
magp 6
aw that's such a sweet dedication message
URGH HAVE I MENTIONED I LOVE THE TMAGP THEME
i always wondered what the muffled falling-down-the-stairs noise at the end of the original theme was. it always put me in mind of the aesthetic of the beginning of portal 2 (and, later, the Buried coffin) idk why
I LOOOVE ALL OF THESEEEE none of them have been hard to get through at all?? which is rare for me bc i fail to pay attention to things for long unless they come in more than two forms of stimulus simultaneously (video + music, audio + fidget toy, video + candle)
AWIEE SAM AND CELIA 😭😭😭
Yes alice you do that matchmaking you are SUCH a girlboss
magp 7
OMFG CELIA DEFINITELY KNOWS SOMETHING
lmao jonny says ree instead of err ee now (for "re:"/regarding)
[ThEory time babes woooOoO]
heyyyy is this one of those other worlds that the fears got banished to. actually what happened to the dread powers? am not exactly clear on that (i hope it's on purpose). maybe the place where the dread powers exist alongside "our world" in tma is also adjacent to other worlds in exactly the same way?? like how a hexagon can be adjacent to six other hexagons??? that'd be sick and it would also explain why there wasnt an overwhelming amount of supernatural incidents in "our world" such that everyone was familiar with the dread powers and normalized safety procedures and such ... interesting au idea ... also the idea jonny proposed about a post-apocalypse world in the s5 qna... that one is cool too............ writers get on that (/j/j/j)
is tmp a separate world ??? they only said it was in the same universe as tma iirc
[wild speculation over]
RAAAAAA i LOVE the robotic voices' VAs' abilities to slowly transition into humanlike speech
cLaYtOn!!!!!? do i know that name or am i going crazy
perhaps i am yet again thinking of the worker of clay (see previous post)
LOOOLL "better than norris, whiny little toad"
OHMYGFUCKING GOD WAIT I RESCIND MY EARLIER STATEMENT!!!!!! THAT'S CANONICALLY JONATHAN SIMS' FRICKING VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
hehehe ooooh you're evil writermen. how dare you use our constant uncertainty as to which characters you're referring to induced by your earlier repetition when naming characters (really there should be a limit as to how many michaels can be in one story) so that we are still unsure, even with prior knowledge, whether sam's mysterious "john" is actually the archivist or just some other john. good lord (im obsessed)
HOLY CRAP COLIN KNOOOWSSSSSSSS THINGSSS i just adore his role as the town crazy old man
omg alex's writing is incredible

"Our Flag Means Death" provides a fictionalized take on historical pirates with a focus on queer representation. While the show doesn't strictly adhere to historical accuracy, it offers a unique lens on the lives of pirates. In the context of queer historical pirates and queer history, let's explore the themes:
1. **Anne Bonny and Mary Read:**
- In real history, Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two female pirates known for their exploits in the early 18th century. While their exact sexual orientations are not explicitly documented, their unconventional lives and the fact that they disguised themselves as men to join pirate crews challenge traditional gender norms.
2. **Edward Teach (Blackbeard):**
- Blackbeard, one of the most infamous pirates, has been the subject of various historical accounts and legends. While not explicitly portrayed as queer, his mystique and unconventional lifestyle contribute to the broader spectrum of diverse identities in pirate history.
3. **Jean Laffite:**
- Jean Laffite, a French pirate and privateer in the Gulf of Mexico during the early 19th century, is another historical figure whose sexuality is a subject of speculation. Some historical accounts suggest he may have had relationships with men, adding complexity to his historical narrative.
4. **Pirates in Non-Western Contexts:**
- The history of piracy extends beyond Western narratives. Pirates in other parts of the world, such as Cheng I Sao in China or Grace O'Malley in Ireland, may have had diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. These lesser-known stories contribute to a more global understanding of pirate history.
5. **Queer Pirates in Literature:**
- The fictionalized world of pirate literature, including works like "Pirates!" by Celia Rees or "Pirates!" by L.A. Witt and Aleksandr Voinov, explores queer narratives within the pirate genre. These stories often blend historical elements with imaginative storytelling.
6. **Queer Pirates in Popular Culture:**
- Movies like "Pirates of the Caribbean" or books like "The Pirate Hunter" by Richard Zacks, while not explicitly focusing on queer pirates, contribute to the popularization of pirate lore. Contemporary interpretations in media can influence how audiences perceive historical figures.
In essence, "Our Flag Means Death" aligns with a broader trend in media to explore and celebrate diverse identities within historical narratives. By fictionalizing elements of pirate history, the show opens up conversations about the often overlooked and underrepresented aspects of queer history, inviting viewers to consider the complexity of LGBTQ+ experiences in different historical contexts.

Who I think your favorite Pixie Hollow fairy was/would be based on your favorite Descendants character.
Mal = Vidia, Bess, Tinkerbell
Evie = Silvermist, Prilla
Jay = Fawn
Carlos = Bobble, Beck, Iridessa
Harry = Vidia, Bess, Rani
Uma = Also Vidia, Fira
Audrey = Book Rosetta
Ben = Terrence, Queen Ree (Book only Queen Ree)
CJ = Zarina (I never watched Pirate Fairy so I'm going on vibes.)
Jane = Prilla, Lily
Chad = Helios
Lonnie = Fira
Dizzy = Violet, Hawthorne
Celia = Wisp, Nettle
Freddie = Gliss
Gil = Clank
Maleficent = Movie Rosetta
Queen Belle = Clarion
(In case any of these confuse you or you disagree, here are some notes)
I did this mostly from memory with some help from the character page on Fandom wiki.
Some of them are more jokey.
Harry's picks are just literally who my favorite fairies were because I was stuck on him forever.
I wish I could have fit more fairies like Dulcie, I just didn't know if they fit.
Some of these are vibes alone and I have no answers

The Sunken City
by Emma Noyes / 4 stars
When I first started reading this, I got a few Pirates, by Celia Rees vibes. I was beyond stoked, that is such a nostalgic read for me, and to get something that brings that to mind was a treat.
Things didn't stay that way though, because when the plot got moving, it moved. To the bottom of the ocean. To a world of 10 underwater cities, and the Soraya. For being set in the 1700s, life beneath the sea is surprisingly modern (with an explanation), which was a plot device I found really entertaining.
As Amare adjusts to her new reality and the world that's been hidden from her, she gets to make friends for the first time. She meets boys - unlike the pirates she was raised with, where danger was always present and flirting was a foreign concept. She chafes as she's assigned a bodyguard, Finn, the King's right-hand man, and the former heir. Because if going from life on a pirate ship to life underwater wasn't complicated enough, she's somehow the princess of this foreign world.
When Finn's brother Lukas returns, Amare is quick to distrust him. She can sense a wrongness about him, something no one else seems to see.
Things happen quickly, and we're left with questions, mixed loyalties, and promises of so much more to come.
While the audiobook version I listened to is just being released, the full trilogy is out, and available on Kindle Unlimited! I fully intend to finish the series soon, and I'm glad I won't have to wait for them. The audiobook was well paced, the different voices were enjoyable and kept things easy to keep track of. I'd definitely listen again, or consider picking up the next books in the series in this option in the future.

Hello! As usual I am requesting your help with quality control. Under the read more is our tentative list of competitors for this tournament. However, between doing a lot of copy pasting and not knowing all of these books I need help. Let me know if any of these are spelled wrong, repeated, or simply don't follow the rules and shouldn't be here. Once polls are posted they are not able to be edited, so this is the chance to make sure I've got it all right before things go live, which will hopefully be in a few days.
