Of sentimental misfortune.
Celegorm, after Oromë, Aredhel and Dior : And if I said I didn’t plan for it to turn out this way I’d be lying.
Celegorm : Because I was born to be the other woman.
Celegorm : Who belonged to no one, who belonged to everyone, who had nothing, who wanted everything.

hrrgh thinking about celegorm/dior again..it’s about the anger looking to find a target and the layers of substitution and the inherent tension between blessed through actions (did everything to lose it) vs. blessed through bloodline (did nothing to gain it) and it’s about fairytale roles and jealousy towards someone fundamentally weaker and eroticizing what you won’t ever have or understand and it’s about pity and it’s about hatred and it’s about experience vs. youth and the reversed mentor and inherited histories but also it’s about wretched transgay hatesex and this duality is actually very simple

I am not normal about Dior. My man grew up around someone who made Morgoth sleep and Mandos cry and around sassy shit Beren I-have-silmaril-in-my-hand *shows stump* Erchamion. He was 30 and went against idk how old but at least thousand-something Celegorm who trained under Oromë and was, like, the best hunter around? And WON. I mean, Dior himself dying notwithstanding, he actually killed Celegorm. He was 30? Give or take. My man was a BABY for a half-elf, this man had to be absolutely FERAL to achieve that. I bet he bites.

Am I the only one deeply confused by Thingol and his line's theft of the Silmarill.
I can't be the only one who thinks that if I was in the Sindarin royal family's position, that I would keep a stolen item.
I can't imagine being Thingol, and keeping the jewel made by my friend's son, something my friend was murdered over, and thinking I had any right to it over my friend's tortured & grieving grandsons.
(I hope Finwë spit in Thingol's face, cussed at him in Quenya, & strangled him if he was able to. If Thingol is allowed to punish ALL the Fëanorians over C&C's actions, Finwë deserves to rip that filthy a-hole's hair out of his sculp & kick his face.)
I can't imagine being Dior and thinking that keeping that jewel from the sons of the person who MADE it, at the expense of my kingdom.
Elwing I'm more sympathetic towards, but it's still ridiculous to me that she believed she deserved the Silmarill more than the sons of the person who MADE it.
And yes, the Silmarill would burn the Fëanorians and they deserved to get burnt by it, but it should still be their property to get burnt by regardless.
If I somehow end up in the same afterlife as Tolkien, I need him to explain this to me so bad because I do NOT understand how it's justified to keep stolen property from the rightful owners.

I just know that the last thing Dior heard was a "Your Mum" joke, and the last thing Celegorm said was a "Your Mum" joke.

The more I dig into the lore around the Second Kinslaying for my current project, the more I'm fascinated by the detail that it was specifically Dior who killed Celegorm. That's one of the main details we get, we aren't even explicitly told who killed Dior, Nimloth, Curufin and Caranthir, just that they were slain.
Celegorm meets his end at the hands of the son of the woman he tried to marry, the son of the couple he fought against and I just love it when narrative threads come full circle (or parallel one another).
I know opinions differ in regards to the level of sexual or romantic interest Celegorm had in Lúthien, as well as the exact appearance of Dior, but this is why I love having him look like a male copy of his mother. I love the idea that Celegorm, in a way, sees her face one more time, but this time it's Dior's. I love the idea that the opponent he fights to the death looks like Lúthien. I love the idea that Dior's face may have been the last thing he saw.
And yes, I also love the idea that Dior may have wanted revenge for what happened to his mother.
If you then put the Silmaril aside for a moment, you can see a more private, personal conflict at the heart of this tragedy: Dior vs Celegorm, though Dior, true to his name meaning "successor", acts as a sort of stand-in for Beren, Lúthien and Thingol in Celegorm's perception.
It's just... ugh. So very fascinating and emotional and tragic.

So. Someone a bit ago commented on one of my fics (or here, not sure) about my penchant for odd Tolkien rarepairs. I myself forget just how many I have, so here’s the rundown and why I like them:
Maedhros/Maeglin (just. the angst. of being buried under your mistakes and finding a kindred soul to share that same burden and heal together. soulmates. who might’ve even met during the nirnaeth. and they’re definitely switches your honor)
Celegorm/Aredhel or Celegorm/Dior (or Dior’s reckless/headstrong stubbornness reminds him of Aredhel and there’s a lot of angry/bittersweet proxyfucking and guilt and ‘I don’t know who I truly love anymore’)
Maglor/Luthien (beauty for beauty’s sake. and honestly anyone but beren. luthien getting involved with the war to protect her murderbard boyfriend and actually putting a dent in morgoth’s forces. mags trying his hardest to protect her as much as the silmaril she won back for him)
Curufin/Finrod (sending your husband to his death (that he knew abt but didn’t tell you) and screwing up your sons and living the rest of your shortened life regretting soooo. many. things. and then having to deal with them after mandos. a bitter beautiful chaotic mess that can only end in tears)
Fingon/Varda (don’t ask: even I’m not sure—something something gil galad’s associated w/ stars and no one knows who his mom is and I like me some valar with greek god leanings)
Aegnor/Haleth (battle bros to lovers, bc haleth won’t take no for an answer like andreth did 😒)
Argon/Amarie (falling in love with your cousin’s ex was not the intention after being the first one killed/sent back. but she’s finally moving on from finrod and you’ve grown to care for her company more than you thought…)
Daeron/Beren (beren didn’t deserve luthien—this started as a joke but these two seriously deserve each other in all their squabbling glory)
Mablung/Nienor (they just. deserve happiness and peace. and lots of adorable peredhel kids. please)
Eowyn/Merry (same as above, but they have the benefit of having an entire shire to rebuild and different cultures to find wonder in and grow to love as much as their own)
idk I might be missing some but these are my thoughts on my main Tolkien rarepairs

Celegorm the Fair.
Vána : Your beauty is beyond compare with shining locks of silver hair with ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.
Eöl : Your smile is like a breath of spring your voice is soft like summer rain and I cannot compete with you Celegorm.
Nimloth : He talks about you in his sleep and there's nothing I can do to keep from crying when he calls your name Celegorm.
Celegorm : ...

A copy of Dior by Dior came into the shop today. Imagine my disappointment to find out that it was not, in fact, the tell-all memoir by the second King of Doriath about his life as the first peredhel, growing up as the beloved only child of Middle-earth's most legendary couple, the challenges of taking over the kingship from his grandfather, and why in his opinion the Sons of Fëanor can all go and suck it. Because that would've been one hell of a read!
