What is beautiful about getting old? Everything! As a woman in her mid-fifties, I can affirmatively declare there is beauty in aging. Unfortunately, some of our younger counterparts might not agree. Where is the attractiveness of maturing? From grey hair and wrinkles to wisdom, beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder but can be found within every crease. For Women's History Month, and just ahead of International Women's Day coming up in a couple of days, Mattel have expanded their Barbie Role Models line to include eight new women.

Mattel's statement on the matter is:

Barbie is committed to shining a light on empowering role models in an effort to inspire more girls. As a part of The Barbie Dream Gap Project, we’re introducing girls to remarkable women’s stories to show them you can be anything.

As per usual these are one of a kind dolls to represent different celebrities or women who have achieved significant things in their fields. If you can't tell from the Barbie likenesses, these dolls are Helen Mirren, Maira Gomez, Viola Davis, Lila Avilés, Shania Twain, Enissa Amani, Nicole Fujita and Kylie Minogue.

Though obviously some of these women are more household names than others, and hence the news is headlined with Helen Mirren and Viola Davis, none of these women are slouches. Maira Gomez, for example, is an Amazonian influencer, and Enissa Amani is an Iranian-German comedian and activist.

I do not want to take anything away from any of the women who were chosen as Barbie Role Models, but I do wish Mattel had chosen a bit more variety in women they chose for this, as they all work essentially in the entertainment industry. However, of course, 2024's Career of the Year was Women in Film, so I hazard a guess this was a deliberate choice.

If there's one thing I've learned about Tumblr discourse, it's that there seems to be absolutely no middle ground.

I've seen pro Taylor posts which are unironically like she's never done anything wrong in her life ever and everyone who is mean to her should die and she has never been the bad guy or done morally questionable things in her life as a millionaire and celebrity with an insane amount of power and wealth at her disposal.

Then there are anti Taylor posts that are like yeah okay, she donated money here and treats all the people who work for her very respectfully and gives them bonuses (as she should) and she does nice things for her fans and does seem to make amends on certain mistakes that she's made in the past but have you considered that all of this is for PR? She doesn't have a genuine bone in her body and even though it's people other than her who come forward with stories of how she's helped them, it's all somehow part of her cruel, vindictive plan to manipulate everyone into thinking she's a nice person.

A lot of you need to realise that she's an insanely privileged, really rich person who lives in an entirely different world and can be very insensitive to actual non millionaire, working class struggles but that also doesn't mean that she's not a human being with genuine human emotions. She's definitely not a saint, but God, she's really not evil personified either.

Sappy little appreciation post for The Newsreader tonight, because I felt compelled to ♡

It's actually incredible just how long The Newsreader was in the making before it got to all of us in 2021/22. Michael has said that the earliest parts of it were coming together in late 2014/early 2015. He was working on it through all my final years of high school (Years Nine - Twelve).

I had no clue as an Australian retro nerd at sixteen/seventeen years old who found every opportunity she could to squeeze in her knowledge of modern Australian history into her schoolwork even if the occasion didn't call for it, that my dream show was being written right there and then. I felt so alone in this passion, I knew no one else who loved this stuff like I did. I was especially absorbing every news clip and old piece of media that I could find about Australian history in the time period of 1970-2000. I would spend hours and hours reading about the stories that I was especially interested in and I wanted to know every miniscule detail. I was making detailed PowerPoints about the period which my Year Twelve English teacher very kindly and graciously let me present to the class because she was the best. The Newsreader is smack bang in the middle of this very niche period and celebrates just that. My thirst for anything I could find was so incredibly strong, and still is. The Newsreader has made it even stronger, to be honest.

If 2016/2017 me especially knew that this show was in the making, my little brain would've exploded. I wish I could have had Helen and Dale as a teenager. I wish I could somehow time travel to then and show seventeen year old Erin what was to come. They would've been my celebrity role models as a teenager for sure, and even though I know they are not their characters, I will never be able to thank Anna Torv or Sam Reid enough for bringing them to life, or Michael Lucas for imagining and writing them, or Emma Freeman for putting together the story physically. Or all the rest of the wonderful cast and crew for what they bring to the show too. Anna and Sam's very special Helen and Dale have changed everything for 20-something year old me and they are now my icons for everything that I love and hold dear. No fictional characters have had this much of an influence over me in my entire life. They are my everything. This show is my everything. I reckon I'll tear up seeing them back on my screen again. It's going to be like being reunited with old friends. Season Two cannot get here fast enough.
