dance with me
summary: luke decides to step in and stop y/nâs friends from teasing her about never having a boyfriend. this leads to fake dates and real feelings.
pairing: luke patterson x reader
word count: 5.5k
warnings: fake dating, alcohol mentions
a/n: my second luke fic which took me way too long to finish because motivation deserted me. Gif is mine :)
It wasnât a new feeling to feel somewhat left out and like a spare part. Y/N was more than used to her friends chatting away beside her like she wasnât even in the room. She was sure it should have bothered her more than it did. Countless times people had asked why she put up with it, and the answer was always simple. Because they were her friends, at least one of them was. Yes the other two werenât the greatest friends, she could at least admit to that. But she had known Jessica her whole life and now they were kind of part of the package, it was easier to be with them. And if she was being honest with herself she liked to sit on the outskirts, only listening in and never participating.
She wasnât much of a talker. She enjoyed people watching and listening to her friends gossip, she could think of nothing worse than having attention on herself. Plus, if her friends were ignoring her it meant they werenât pestering her about her love life. And that was something Y/N was more than thankful for. It started out harmless when they were younger. She was the last of her friends to hold a boy's hand. The last one to share a kiss. The last one to have a boyfriend (of course, because she still hadnât). They had teased her about it.
âOh, Y/N, why do you never go out? Why do you never have fun?â
âDonât you want a boyfriend?â
âPlease let us try and hook you up!â
But the meaningful pestering had slowly turned to more hurtful taunts.
âYouâre so boring Y/N, you really need to lighten up!â
âYouâll never find a boyfriend if you donât live a little!â
âAre you sure you want to come to the party? Everyone has a date, youâll be alone like usual.â
She tried not to let it bother her. Rolling her eyes and shaking off her friends comments. She convinced herself she was fine on her own. She didnât want a boyfriend and she certainly didnât need one. She had considered finding one just to shut them up, but she couldnât imagine dating someone just for the sake of it. She was old fashioned. She believed you should love wholeheartedly with everything in you. You should love truly and fiercely and definitely not give yourself away just to be included.
Y/N had seen her friends jump from one boy to the next, some not lasting more than a week. She didnât want that. She would rather be seen as boring than throw herself at boys just for attention. She knew she had nothing in common with her friends and she also knew people wondered why they even hung out with her. But her friends were popular. And it was easier to be in the popular crowd and ignored than it was to be in the shadows and picked on.
It was near the end of lunch time when her friends finally noticed her again. Jessica was leaning against her locker, eyes locked on her compact mirror as she applied another layer of pink lipstick.
âYou havenât forgotten about my party this weekend, have you Y/N?â She asks before pursing her lips at her reflection.
Jessica was the girl Y/N had known the longest. She could stand Jessica. When they werenât around everyone else she was back to being the girl sheâd met when they were seven. Giddy and excitable, not caring what she looked like. But in public she put on the image of the perfect princess, and she definitely played it well.
âItâs your birthday Jessica, how could I forget?â She rolls her eyes with a smile gracing her lips.
Jessica snaps her mirror shut and forms her pink lips into a dazzling smile, âSo youâll be there?â
âOf course Iâll be there.â She agrees with a nod, she would call Jessica her best friend, she wouldnât miss her birthday party for anything.
âAre you bringing someone?â Jasmine asks, her perfectly trimmed brow quirking up with her question, âWe wouldnât want you standing on your own in the corner like last time.â She smiles, tight lipped and fake as she waits for a reply.
She opens her mouth slightly, considering for a moment if it was a good idea to lie and say she was bringing someone, just to wipe the smug look from Jasmine's face. But before she can decide if that is a good idea or a train wreck waiting to happen a voice speaks up.
âOf course not,â Amber giggles, âHave you ever had a date before, Y/N?â Amber tilts her head, a smile just as fake as jasmines setting on her lips.
âNo, but thatâs okay,I donât revolve my self worth around boys' attention.â She returns Amber's smile.
âThatâs good! Because you donât get any!â Amber retorts back with a laugh.
âAmber-â Jessica begins to scold her friend but is cut off before she can begin.
âHey, Y/N.â A voice from behind her catches everyoneâs attention.
Jessica raises a brow at the boy behind her friend as she turns to see who exactly was greeting her.
âOh, hi, Luke.â Y/N replies, her hand coming up in a small wave, she cringes at her own awkwardness.
âI just wanted to make sure weâre still on for tonight,â the boy smiles at her and she canât help but forrow her brows.
She knows Luke from a couple of her classes but she canât say sheâs ever said more than a few words to the boy. Her memory wasnât amazing but she was pretty sure she hadnât made any sort of plans with the boy, he was practically a stranger after all.
âUh, I-â she begins to tell him that she has no clue what heâs talking about but he cuts her off again as if he knows what she will say.
âI know I said I wasnât sure what we should do, but I was thinking we could catch a movie?â Luke raises both of his brows at the girl in front of her, willing her to just go along with it.
And if Y/N has learnt anything from her many years people watching she knows how to read signs, something finally clicking in her head as she quickly nods.
âRight!â She smiles, âYes, a movie that sounds great! Is seven still good?â
Luke nods, a grin appearing on his face, âSeven, yeah, see you then.â He sends her a last nod before burying his hands into his pockets and turning away, feeling pretty pleased with himself.
Y/N turns back to her friends feeling extremely confused but determined not to show it. Amber and Jasmine look somewhat annoyed but Jessica is practically bursting with excitement.
âY/N!â She squeals and grabs her shoulders, âWhy didnât you say you had a date with that cute boy?â She shakes her friend for an answer.
The girl laughs, prying her friends hands from her shoulders, âI guess it slipped my mind.â She offers with a shrug.
âSlipped your mind?â Jessica she is sure is about to reprimand her but her scolding is cut off by the ringing off the bell, âI want all the details!â She finishes instead.
She sends her friend one last grin before grabbing onto Amber and Jasmine and pulling them down the hall while Y/N turns the opposite way and heads to literature. She couldnât honestly say why Luke had come over to them but she was glad he had. The looks on her friends' faces when they thought she had a date was the best thing to happen to her in a long time.
She took her seat in the classroom, the room already almost full of students. The seat next to her was taken up by the boy who had stood in front of her just moments before.
âHey,â she greets as she opens up her notebook, âWhat was all that about?â She asks.
Luke looks over to her, his desk empty of anything except a blunt pencil which he was rolling around with a finger. He shrugs, smiling as he meets her eyes.
âI guess I got sick of your friends always making fun of you for not having a boyfriend.â He replies like itâs nothing.
âWait, you know about that?â She asks, a soft laugh leaving her lips, âI never realised people noticed.â
Luke nods, âI notice a lot of things. Itâs not right, friends shouldnât put each other down. I hate seeing it, so I thought Iâd wipe the smirks off their faces. Thanks for going along with it.â
She offers him a genuine smile, âI nearly didnât, I was so confused!â She admits causing him to laugh, âBut thank you.â
He opens his mouth to reply but the late bell sounds and the teacher shuts the door bringing the class to silence. So instead he sends her one last smile before averting his eyes out of the window, his finger still pushing the pencil heâd stolen from Reggie around his desk.
The hour dragged by slowly. She didnât mind this class most of the time but she couldnât get her mind to focus on the poem they were supposed to be dissecting. If there was one thing she could never grasp it was poetry. She found it beautiful and clever, but she couldnât tell you what most of it meant. So when the bell finally rang to signal the end of the lesson she let out a sigh of relief and snapped her notebook closed.
âNot like poetry?â Luke asks with a laugh at her slightly dishevelled look after running her hands through her hair.
âIf my life depended on understanding poetry Iâd have been dead a long time ago.â She admits, and then frowns at the awkwardness of being death up in a conversation.
âWell, itâs a good thing it doesnât then.â Luke grins as he follows her out of the glass room.
The pair donât get two steps away from the door before they are bombarded by a blonde in a pink dress.
âWhy havenât you replied to my text?â Jessica stresses, reaching out and grabbing Luke by the shirt as he tries to slip past her, âAre you bringing your new date to my party?â She deposits Luke back by Y/Nâs side and looks at the pair expectantly.
âOh! Uh, well I hadnât actually brought it up yet.â She offers with a shrug.
âWell then youâre lucky I brought it up for you!â Jessica grins, âItâs on Saturday at nine, my house. Iâll see you there!â She waves to Luke before disappearing in the crowd of people.
Luke and Y/N share a look, one full of confusion, hopefulness and a tinge of awkwardness.
âGuess Iâm your date to a party?â Luke asks with a soft chuckle, his hand coming up to rub the back of his neck.
Y/N quickly shakes her head, âNo! No please donât feel the need, Iâll just make something up.â
âSo you donât want me to go?â Luke asks holding a hand up to his heart, âIâm slightly offended.â
âI meanâŠâ she bites her lower lip, looking around the hallway desperate for an escape which never came, âI just meant, itâs not necessary.â
Luke laughs, âIâm only messing with you,â he reaches out and taps her arm lightly, âBut uh, i'll go, if you want. I kind of want to mess with your friends a little more.â He admits.
She raises a brow and laughs a little, âLike, fake date?â She asks, laughing again when Luke nods. She knows she should say no, roll her eyes and push him away, but the memory of Amber and Jasmines faces from earlier flashed back into her mind. This opportunity was too good to pass up on, itâs not like she was throwing herself at boys like she promised herself she wouldnât, itâs all fake. And whatâs the harm in fake dating a cute boy?
âOkay,â she nods, âFake boyfriend, i'll see you there.â
------
The more she thought about it the more she was convinced she was crazy. Fake dating someone was one thing, but fake dating someone sheâd never even held a conversation with? That was off the spectrum of crazy. How was she supposed to convince her friends that she was actually dating someone who she knew nothing about? What if they actually had nothing in common? What if when they finally do hang out they canât stand each other? She supposed they could just fake break up just as convincingly as they fake got together. And she decided that was probably the best option. Break it off now before it got too out of hand for everyone involved. It was what she fully intended on doing. Her speech was already planned out and rehearsed multiple times on the walk to Jessicaâs party.
She was going to walk up to him, look him straight in the eye and tell him it was a crazy idea and they needed to stop. She didnât have time for a real boyfriend let alone a fake one and she didnât want anyone to get hurt. But as she rounded the corner and saw the boy waiting for her the plan fizzled out of her thoughts immediately and she found herself skipping over to him with a grin.
âDonât you scrub up nicely.â She comments, tugging playfully on his shirt.
He had forgone his usual slogan tees with ripped sleeves and dressed in a plain black T-shirt and jeans, a plaid shirt thrown on the top which she was sure sheâd seen a friend of his wearing the week before.
Luke shrugs looking almost bashful for a second, âI didnât want to stand out and show you up. You look nice.â He adds, finally looking her up and down.
Sheâd chosen a simple dress, dark blue in colour and stopping just above the knee, âYeah well, I didnât want to show you up.â She teases with a nudge of her elbow.
âI guess we should get this awful evening over with then?â Luke jokes, offering his arm to her to link hers through which she does instantly.
The party was already in full swing when they walked through the doors, her friends drunk to the point of not caring about her arrival which she was more than pleased about.
âI donât really drink.â She comments as she grabs a can of cola from the table, Luke helps himself to one after.
âMe neither.â He smiles, âIâd rather know what Iâm doing...And not look like an idiot.â He leans up to look over her shoulder at the girl stumbling around in her heels like bambi on ice.
She looks over her shoulder, letting out a laugh at the sight before turning back, âYou mean you donât want to look like that?â She grins and grabs onto his arm, âCâmon, there's nothing more annoying than drunk people.â
She leads him outside, pulling him down onto a bench beside her. The backyard was quieter than inside the house, fewer drunk people shouting and laughing and mostly just people chilling out.
âHonestly, I donât really like parties.â Luke comments, taking a sip from his can, âIâd much rather hang out with some friends and chill.â
Y/N nods her head in agreement, âSame, but unfortunately my friends are the ones who throw all the parties.â
âDonât take this the wrong way but, why are you friends with them?â Luke looks over to her and raises an eyebrow in question, âYou donât really seem to fit with them.â
âJessicaâs my best friend, the others...Well, theyâre friends with Jess so I guess I have to put up with them.â She shrugs, averting her gaze from his intense stare and looking down at her can in her hands.
âYeah but you donât have to put up with them being bitches to you.â Luke comments.
She lets out a laugh, leaning her head back against the bench and looking over to him, âItâs not that bad. Itâs either that or sitting on my own everyday. And Iâve never heard you swear before.â
âY/N! Luke!â Jessica practically screams their names, stumbling through the patio doors and pulling her nights catch along behind her, âIâm so glad you came! Together!â
She leans down pulling her into a clumsy hug, almost knocking Luke out with her elbow as she pulls back.
âSo! This is getting pretty serious, huh?â She wiggles her eyebrows suggestively at her friend causing her to laugh.
âJess, itâs been three days.â She giggles, she feels Luke's hand grab hers and allows him to intertwine their fingers, âThree great days.â She adds on with a grin she was sure was the definition of cheesy.
âIâm so happy for you!â Jessica pouts grabbing onto her friends spare hand, âI guess this means youâll be going to the dance together?â She gasps, the grin on her face radiating excitement.
âUh,â She looks over at Luke expectantly, eyebrows raised in question.
âWe wouldnât miss it.â Luke answers for them, squeezing her hand and shooting Jess a smile.
Jess lets out a squeal before the boy attached to her hand begins to tug her back inside complaining that it's cold. She rolls her eyes and mouths an apology before disappearing back into the throng of people inside.
âWe donât really have to go.â She begins to say quickly but Luke jumps up and pulls her with him by her hand.
âI donât mind. And uh, as much as I dislike parties, weâre not going to annoy your friends if we sit out here all night.â He shoots her a cheeky grin before dragging her into the mass of the party.
They discard their empty cans on the kitchen table and head to the living room which has been turned into a makeshift dance area. The room was packed and Y/N already felt nervous about the idea of dancing and being surrounded by so many people.
âI canât really dance.â She laughs, stopping in the midst of the drunk dancers.
âItâs not proper dancing,â Luke shrugs, he grabs ahold of her waist and pulls her into him, their chests pressing together as his arms snake around her back, âAnd your friends are watching.â
He smirks as she averts her eyes to the left, Amber and Jasmine watching their every move with matching scowls causing her to giggle. She lifts her hands and rests them against Lukeâs chest, letting him move her along to the pop song which was playing too loudly.
âI donât think we fit in.â She mentions, watching the couples around her grind against each other.
Luke laughs, âWell if you want to fit in.â He quickly spins her around, pulling her back so her back is pressed against his chest, âWe can dance like this.â He whispers into her ear as his hands rest against her hips.
She feels her face heat up and lets out a laugh hoping to cover it up, âI guess this is more believable, but Iâm not doing that!â She motions with her head towards the couple beside them who were grinding aggressively against each other.
âDeal.â Luke laughs against her cheek as he slides his arms fully around her waist.
Dancing with Luke for the whole night was not as torturous as she had expected it to be. They talked, at least as well as they could with the loud music. She found she got on with Luke quite well which she hadnât expected. He was funny and sweet, his usual rugged appearance not one which matched his personality at all. When they finally decided to leave the party he offered to walk her home and she agreed. Their intertwined hands splitting apart once they were far enough away from the party to not be seen.
âItâs weird, having a fake boyfriend.â She comments, looking up to the night sky, the stars barely shining through the group of clouds overhead, âI almost like it. Like having a boyfriend but minus all the drama.â
âI thought youâd never had a boyfriend.â Luke laughs.
She shrugs and looks over to him, âFrom what Iâve seen with my friends Iâm not sure I ever want a real one.â
âWell Iâm glad I make an acceptable fake boyfriend.â Luke nudges her with his shoulder eliciting a laugh from her.
------
The following week at school was full of preparations for the dance, Y/N feeling more excited about it than she ever had before. This time she would actually be going with someone! Fake or not, it was still a lot more exciting than standing around alone for the whole night. Sheâd also spent the week getting to know Luke more. They were âdatingâ after all so they had to hang out in public to make it look at all believable. He spent a lunch with her and her friends, but she didnât blame him for hating every minute of it. Amber and Jasmine werenât nice to her and they definitely werenât nice to him.
She spent most of her lunches with him and his friends, having much more fun than sheâd like to admit. She watched them rehearse, half of it actual rehearsing half of it messing around. She liked Lukeâs friends and even started feeling a little bad about lying to them when Alex said how happy he was they were happy together. She found she got on with Reggie the best. He was silly and it was a nice change of pace to her own friends to be around someone who didnât care what anyone thought.
She was also getting used to the physical touches, maybe too used to it. She noticed that Luke was a touchy person, he was always wrapping his arms around his friends shoulders and nudging them and that didnât stop when it got to her. She now wasnât sure if it was because of the fake relationship or because he really was like that with everyone. But she found she didnât mind. She quite liked when he would hold her hand in the hallways or throw his arm over her shoulders when they were sat somewhere. She had to keep reminding herself that he only meant it in a friendly way.
Friday came around quickly and she took the day off from hanging out with like to spend time decorating with Jess, something they always helped out with for every dance.
âWhat colours your dress? Is Luke getting a matching tie?â Jessica asks as she helps her hang a banner from the ceiling.
Y/N was sat atop Jessica's shoulders struggling to secure the string to the ceiling, they knew they would get told off if a teacher saw them like this but neither could be bothered to go and find the ladders so they had to make do.
âI was thinking either blue or green,â She comments, her words muffled around the extra string in her mouth, âAnd I hadnât even thought about ties.â
âHe has to be matching! Otherwise you will look odd!â Jess complains.
She had always been way more invested in fashion than Y/N ever had, she didnât really see the harm in Lukeâs tie not matching her dress, but also knew Jess wouldnât let it go.
âIâll talk to him.â She mumbles out, letting out a cheer when she finally gets the banner to stick.
As she climbed down from Jessicaâs shoulders she was met with a pair of blue eyes, her friend quickly slinking away behind her.
âHey Y/N, can I talk to you for a sec?â Jason asks.
She chews on her bottom lip, silently scolding her friend for abandoning her, âYeah, sure.â She offers a smile.
âI was just wondering if youâd want to go to the dance with me? I know itâs a little last minute butâŠâ Jason rubs the back of his neck with his hand, sending her an awkward shrug.
âOh! UhmâŠâ She pauses for a moment at a complete loss for an answer. She was supposed to be going with Luke. But that wasnât real, whereas this could actually lead to something, she was sure Luke would understand if she cancelled with him, she knew he never usually went to dances anyway.
But as she looked up to answer her eyes landed on the figure walking down the hallway towards them, Luke shot her a smile and raised his brows at the boy in front of her and she thought about how she felt when she was with him. Fake dating or not, Luke was her friend now, and friends didnât cancel on each other last minute.
âIâm sorry Jason, Iâm already going with someone. But thanks for asking me.â She offers him her kindest smile.
âNo worries, I thought it was a long shot being this late.â He shrugs again and bids her goodbye before disappearing around the corner.
âWhat was all that about?â Luke asks, leaning against the locker in front of her with a curious look in his eyes.
âHe asked me to the dance.â She answers.
âAnd?â Luke prompts.
âAnd I said no.â She laughs.
âYou did?â Luke doesnât try to hide the grin that appeared on his face, âWhy would you say no? To an actual date, instead of a fake one?â
âI donât know.â She fiddles with the bottom of her jacket, pulling it tighter around her, âI considered it, but it didnât feel right, I didnât want to cancel on you.â
âWell Iâm flattered.â Luke laughs, âI was actually looking for you, what colour dress are you wearing? Jess just shouted at me about ties.â
She just rolls her eyes and links her arm through Lukes to pull him down the hallway.
------
Y/N paces on her front porch as she waits for Luke to turn up, part of her dress skirt scrunched in her hand to prevent her from stepping on it and tripping over. She had never felt so nervous before. She had to keep reminding herself that this is a fake date. Luke doesnât actually like her and sheâs sure the feelings she's starting to get are just results of faking sed feelings in public.
âWhy are you out here?â Lukeâs voice cuts through her worrying thoughts and she turns to him with a smile.
âMy mum was bugging me about pictures. I thought it was safer out here.â She laughs, biting her lower lip at the sight of Luke stood on her porch, his suit fitting his body perfectly and his tie an exact match to the green of her dress.
âYou look amazing.â Luke breathes out in awe, he holds his hand out to her and she gladly accepts it and lets him lead her down the steps.
âSo do you.â She replies quietly.
The ride to the school is quiet but sheâs acutely aware of Lukeâs eyes flickering over to her during the drive. She doesnât comment on it but the butterflies in her stomach go wild at every glance.
âDid you help put this together?â Luke asks as they enter the hall.
The hall was decorated with blue and silver giving it a wintery feel, balloons and streamers around the outskirts and hanging from the ceiling.
She shrugs, âI guess. Jess did most of it, I just helped.â
âWell it looks great.â He compliments.
They stand in the doorway sharing a glance before looking around the room, âSo, I donât usually come to these. What do we do now? I thought people would be dancing.â
She laughs and slaps his chest lightly, âPeople won't be dancing till later, once the punch has been spiked.â she grins and takes hold of his hand to lead him to one of the tables around the edge of the dancefloor.
âIâll admit, Iâm surprised this is still a thing.â Jasmine comments as she sits opposite them, âAre you not bored yet?â She directs her question to Luke who shoots her a glare.
âWhy would I be bored? Sheâs the most interesting girl Iâve ever met, she's actually real.â He comments back playing with her fingers in his.
Jasmine lets out a laugh, eyebrows raised as she lifts her drink to her lips as if she thought Luke was crazy, which she probably did.
âWhereâs your date?â Luke asks.
Jasmineâs glass hits the table with a glare, âIâd rather be dateless than have whatever this is.â She points between the two before standing up and stomping off.
âSounds like jealousy!â Luke calls after her and Y/N erupts into a fit of giggles beside him.
âI think she hates you more than she does me.â She laughs leaning into Lukes side.
The hall soon began to fill up with students, couples slowly making their way onto the dancefloor as the dance fully started. She had spotted Jessica and sent her a wave as the girl made her way to the dancefloor where she would stay for the entire night. Y/N wasnât sure how to dance and she would take a wild guess that Luke didnât know either, this didnât seem like his kind of scene.
âDo you want to dance?â Luke asks as though reading her thoughts.
âYou want to?â She responds.
âI can try.â He laughs and stands up motioning for her to join him, âCanât come to a dance with an actual date and not have at least one dance.â Her cheeks heat up at the comment about it being an actual date, not sure if Luke meant it or if it was just a slip of the tongue, she didnât point it out.
His hand finds hers as they walk to the dancefloor, finding a spot in the middle which she was thankful for, less likely people will see them there. Luke's arms wrapped around her waist and hers went around his shoulders, much like at the party except their movements were slower.
âIs this right.â He asks and she lets out a soft laugh.
âNo idea, but it feels good to me.â She hesitates for a moment before leaning forward and resting her cheek against his chest.
The stay pressed together for the next two songs in a comfortable silence before she decides to break it.
âWhy are people staring at us?â She asks.
Luke hadnât noticed but looks around at her question and notices a few eyes on them, he shrugs, âBecause weâre the best looking couple here?â
She laughs and slaps his arm, pulling her head away from his chest, âIâm serious! Itâs making me nervous.â
Luke sighs and squeezes her waist lightly, âI have no idea. Maybe people are just surprised to see us here together.â
She considers it for a moment before finally nodding her head, âYeah, thatâs probably it.â
Luke watches her look around anxiously for another moment before he squeezes her sides again to bring her attention back to him.
âI know we havenât been here long, but I think weâve made our point, do you wanna get out of here?â he smiles down at her and she doesnât have to think twice about nodding her head.
Once out of the building Y/N lets out a sigh of relief, âI didnât realise how claustrophobic I felt in there.â She breathes out.
âYeah, itâs tough work being surrounded by people like that.â Luke agrees, âIâd much rather hang out just us two.â
Luke drove them away from the school and to a park, the street lamps illuminating the play area which he led her to. They sat down on the swing set, both angled towards each other as they swayed back and forth slowly. They talked about anything they could think of; family, Lukeâs band, memories, movies, music. They talked for what felt like hours before Luke jumped off his swing and held his hand out to her.
âWhat?â She asks as he leads her to a clear area.
âWell, weâre supposed to be at a dance right? So dance with me again.â He pulls her into his arms as she laughs at him.
âThereâs no music.â She comments and he just shrugs.
âI was thinking,â He begins, looking around nervously as he bites his lower lip, âWhen youâre finished with me being your fake boyfriend, maybe you could let me take you on a real date?â
She felt her cheeks heat up a little bit and didnât hide the smile growing on her face, âWell, maybe Iâm done with you being my fake boyfriend now.â
Lukeâs face lights up, his eyes finding hers again and looking a lot less nervous, âYeah? So you wouldnât mind if I did this then?â He asks.
He leans forward, his lips grazing across hers lightly before pulling her into a kiss. She felt like the world around her had stopped, the only thing indicating she hadnât died and gone to heaven was the rapid beating of her heart. When he pulled away she pouted up at him.
âI only mind that you pulled away.â She replies, his smile being covered by her lips again as she pulled him close to her.
They stayed kissing and swaying in the silence until Luke finally said he should take her home. They planned their first real date for the next morning, because neither of them could wait longer than that.

you give it to me anyway (Tatum X Lina)
Set immediately after the ending of chapter 13.
Update (after the events of chapter 14): in this little series, Tatum does not go back to the army but is relocated to work as a bodyguard for some random politician in Rutherland. That's why this goodbye of theirs is not as heartbreaking as it was canonically. Therefore, shall the two other parts happen, they will not follow canon because I have them planned and I refuse to make new plans
WC: 3 600; rating: M (mature)
Warnings: swearing, making out, mentions of smoking, alcohol consumption, adult situations; hurt/comfort
Authorâs note: my first Foreign Affair fic - it was so much fun to write I forgot about my two idiot doctors for a while. This is supposed to be part 1 of three-parts mini series, but 1) I have no idea when those two other parts will happen and 2) if it goes by plan, they will be all completely okay to read as stand-alones so hopefully this will be enjoyable no matter what.
She could feel it. She could swear she could; she could pinpoint the moment her mind stopped working and all the energy normally divided between the gears in her head and the beating of her heart suddenly focused solely on the latter.
Her mind stopped working and her heart drummed against her ribcage twice as hard.
Lina doesnât remember much after that, after bursting through the door and demanding an answer (âWhy the fuck would you take Tatum off the team?â), her memories a messy blur of shouting (hers), a voice trying to calm her down (Demarcoâs) and the one that mattered in the end.
âLina,â Tatum put his hand on her shoulder, his face stoic â but she knew better, she could see his eyes, eyes pained, eyes pleading. âGet inside. I will be with you in a moment.â
âBut-â she opened her mouth to protest, only to be stopped by Tatumâs gentle squeeze and eyes more pleading.
Just get in and wait for me, he whispered and thatâs how she has gotten here.
Pacing back and forth in her room, biting her lip so hard she feels blood. Her brain is working again, thinking and analyzing (overthinking, overanalyzing) and she needs a cigarette, a shot of vodka, she needs to punch something (someone), needs to just do something.
The tremor in her hands violent and she clenches them in fists, telling herself that itâs anger, a rage running through her whole body, but there is that traitorous voice that whispers â no, screams â that she knows this is more than that, that itâs fear.
A lump in her throat formed and unmoving and Lina swallows once, twice, keeps swallowing until she cannot catch her breath but the fucking lump is still there and tears are threatening to fall from her eyes and-
No.
Line Monroe does not cry. She has learnt not to cry, hasnât cried since-
She does not cry.
Tries to take a deep breath but itâs completely useless and Lina knows how she feels. Like a crystal vase in the middle of a big wooden table, beautiful and shiny and protected at all costs â all of it worth nothing when an earthquake comes. This is her personal earthquake, every second pushing her closer to the edge, sobs threatening to cut her open, to leave her mouth and never stop and she wonders if falling over the edge and just break into million pieces would be such a terrible thing.
She could beg. She would beg, if only that would help. She only begged once in her life.
(Lina has never been the picture of a perfect child â well, definitely not after Tatum left. No, she lived for making her motherâs political career an actual hell, she laughed into her face in the middle of a scolding. The First Daughter of Rutherland couldnât give less fucks about what her mother wants, needs, asks for. Nobody ever asked what she wanted, needed, asked for.)
She only begged once in her life â she was seven and desperately wanted a puppy. (She could do it again at the age of twenty-two and desperately wanting her Tatum.)
Mom, I promise Iâll be good. (Mom, I promise Iâll be good.)
I will take care of him. (He will take care of me.)
I wonât eat sweets. (I wonât smoke. Wonât get drunk.)
I will do all of my homeworks. (I will go on as many fake dates as you want.)
I wonât watch TV. (I wonât cause another scandal.)
I will clean the whole house! (I will attend all the summits, I will, I will.)
Mom, please. (Mom, please.)
She never got the puppy. (She knows that no matter how much she begs, she will not get to keep Tatum, either.)
An earthquake and she is starting to accept her fate, awaiting the final shake, the strongest vibration that will make her fall from the table and shatter.
There is a soft knock on the door and she feels it coming, the magnitude strong enough to stir fear inside of people.
Tatum walks in, closing the door behind him carefully â and the Richter scale does not have enough values to describe how dangerous this earthquake has gotten.
âLina,â he whispers softly, stretching his arms towards her and thatâs it.
The crystal vase falls to the ground (into Tatumâs arms) and the shards cut skin (and the sobs cut Lina open).
It is easy after the first one â like the blood spilling out of the cut, like a plug removed and water pouring, flooding, destroying, the sobs leave her mouth and her shoulders shake and Lina hasnât done this in four years, hasnât shed a tear for so long but Tatumâs arms encircle her, strong and firm and safe and no, breaking into million pieces is not such a terrible thing after all.
She thinks she screams in one moment and Tatum only hugs her tighter, slowly dropping to the soft carpet, pulling Lina with him, his arms never (never, never) leaving her shivering body â and she holds onto him tighter than she holds onto her own life (own dignity, own worth, none of it more important that holding onto Tatum), hands still clenched in fists. Linaâs grip on his perfect white shirt must be uncomfortable and she is sure she is ruining the fabric, if not with her nails then definitely with her mascara-tinted tears.
For a long, long moment they stay like that â Tatum kneeling on the floor and Lina curled up against his chest, sobs wrecking her body and his hands drawing soothing circles on her back.
âWe will make this work, Lina,â he whispers when the room falls into silence, the only memory of Linaâs ignominious breakdown being Tatumâs soaked shirt and her throbbing temples. âYou are strong and the other bodyguards are capable. Demarco is a good agent, they will keep you safe.â
âI donât care about being safe,â she scoffs. âAll my life, everyone has only cared about me being safe. You are⊠You have always been the only one to care about how I am feeling. If I am happy. And now you are leaving again.â
Tatum pulls back a little â not enough to break the contact of his hands on her shoulders, just enough to look her into eyes â and with a voice that is quiet but firm, leaving no room for doubts, he says: âI am not leaving you, Lina. I wonât be returning to army, okay? I am going back to Rutherland tomorrow and only then I will be informed about this move â maybe I am only being taken off for some time. This is not the same as the last time.â
âI cannot lose you again,â she whispers, not meeting his eyes. As if she was not sure about her decision to share such moment of vulnerability with him.
âYou will not. Who is my toughest galyetas here, hm?â
Lina looks up at him at that, the initial shock from hearing the old nickname (the one she hasnât heard in years, the one she has missed for years) soon replace by her smile, however faint and itâs like the sun peeked into the room all at once.
(Eyes puffy and red, cheeks wet from tears and lips swollen from biting and has she always been this beautiful?, Tatum wonders.)
âI am,â she chuckles before Tatum demands the answer and encouraged by the moment of clarity that has settled over them, she manages to stand up and open the closet.
Impulsive would be a great word to describe Lina. Unpredictable. Fierce. Mostly fierce, Tatum thinks and it should not be a surprise for him when Lina takes off her skinny jeans and light blue blouse, carelessly throwing them over the chair and it should not be a surprise when she follows the motion to take her bra off, no, it should not be a surprise for him and yet-
The heat in his cheeks is inappropriate, for Godâs sake, and he should â he must â tear his gaze off her naked back, but he cannot (and how many nights he wished he was granted this? how many days?). He stares and stares as she ruffles through the closet and itâs his time to clench his hands into fists to stop himself from reaching out to her.
âI should⊠I will leave you to change,â he finds his voice and itâs low and husky and inappropriate, but Lina just smirks as she turns slightly to face him better and he needs to avert his gaze, he must not stare at the curve of her breasts, so perfect above her ribcage.
âYou have already seen me naked,â the smirk widens. âAnd besides, you should get out of that wet shirt too.â
Getting out of his clothes does not sound like a good idea to him, not in the slightest, but it gives him a reason to look down and unbutton his shirt â and that motion gives him some time to take a deep breath and respond.
âYes, I have seen you naked. When we were five and swimming in a lake.â
He can swear he heard Lina mutter âtime to check how much has changed in those fifteen yearsâ, but Tatum doesnât trust himself enough to engage in that conversation and so he carefully slips out of his jacket and the stained shirt and switches his radio off before putting everything in a neat stack on the top of a drawer.
Tatum sits down again after that, his back leaned against Linaâs bed and soon she joins him, soft grey cotton shorts and tank top on. She mirrors his position and they share a private smile, because it is their position, the one everyone knows them by â knee to knee, shoulder to shoulder, (heart to heart), Tatumâs arm wrapped around Linaâs shoulders and her hand resting on his right knee. It is always this position for them and Lina canât count how many photos they have together, where they sit exactly like this.
âAre we going to be okay?â she whispers, almost not daring to break the comfort they bring out of each other. But she needs to. She needs to know that they are going to be okay.
âOf course,â he nudges her knee with his own softly and smiles down at her. For a moment, she pretends she does not see the panic swirling in his eyes, giving away that he does not know, that there is no of course for them.
She nods, her fingers drawing mindless patterns on his leg and she is sure they are not that mindless, she knows that in a language only known to them she is writing her confessions, she is writing a love letter.
More mindless patterns and Lina feels Tatumâs eyes on her, caring and loving and worried, definitely worried, but she doesnât look up at him because the emotions his gaze can stir inside of her are enough to send her into another breakdown.
âDo you remember Scott Diazâs party?â she asks into the silence.
Tatum chuckles loudly and squeezes the shoulder he is hugging. âOf course.â
âIt was the first time I got drunk,â Lina says as if it was an explanation itself, when in reality this conversation was not making any sense so far.
Scottâs party was the one which only Lina attended when she was sixteen â Tatum had to stay home to help his father with something (it was not important to Lina back then) and Lina didnât mind that much because she liked Scott and she believed there were higher chances of her charming him without Tatumâs alert gaze directed at her.
âYes, I remember,â Tatum decides to play this game that makes no sense with her. âIt was my toilet you threw up into that night.â
âI remember getting drunk with Scott and his stupid friends and realizing that they were a group of idiots, with Scott being the greatest idiot of them all. But I was drunk and he was my first crush and I just wanted him to like me and I was ready to do anything.â
âYes,â Tatum says again, this time much more quietly, though. âI remember your phone call at 2 AM. You were crying and asked me to come and rescue you because you are drunk and nauseous and Scott is a dick but you might sleep with him if I donât come.â
There is a long pause and Lina thinks he might not continue. Even worse, she fears he might ask why she is bringing the story up now.
To her utmost surprise, Tatum laughs and continues: âI stole my dadâs car so that I could get you out of there faster. You threw up in the backseat and my dad almost killed me because he was supposed to take your mother to the airport the next morning.â
Lina laughs with him shortly and the room falls into silence once again.
Once again, Lina makes sure to interrupt the comfort it brings.
âAnd then you left and there was nobody to rescue me anymore.â
She is not sure why she said that. No, Lina does not want to tell Tatum about those years he has been away. She is scared (and she has never been that scared in her whole damn life), scared to share the failures and slips of her past, scared that he would get up and leave-
(Because thatâs what he should do)
-scared that he would see what she sees every time she looks in the mirror and Lina does not care about the opinion of the others, she does not care if someone sees her as someone worthy or not, as long as that someone is not Tatum.
Deep down, she knows he would not, he will not leave, she knows Tatum - the same Tatum that strokes her upper arm now, giving her the space to sort her thoughts â will stay with her even in the moments she does not want to stay with herself.
And there is one fear that is bigger, greater, more terrible than the fear of being left â fear of hurting him. The idea of her past being the reason of his hurt, being the thing that puts the haunted look into his eyes, makes her want to throw up.
She will need to tell him eventually because if somebody deserves her honesty, itâs Tatum Mendoza, her best friend, her savior, her Tatum.
Eventually does not mean now.
Tatum wishes Lina could say something, anything, he wants her to share her demons with him and he almost asks her to tell him everything but before he can do so, she turns abruptly and looks at him, her eyes no longer puffy or red â glossy and bright and beautiful now and she doesnât say a word.
She just looks at him like he is the only thing in the whole world worth looking at.
"It's your eyes," she says quietly, reaching to cup his stubbled cheek with her left hand.
"My eyes?" Tatum asks, surprised by the sudden statement.
Lina nods, tracing his left eyebrow with her finger before moving to stroke the skin under his eyes and finally reaching the bridge of his nose.
"There's no one else's eyes that could see into me," she whispers and her finger traces circles around his right eye now, soothing the wrinkles - reminders of their earlier laugh.
(She doesn't know those wrinkles are hers; nobody makes him laugh like she does)
Her gaze doesn't leave those eyes, not for a second and and the intensity she looks at him with is far more intimate than her naked form, bare torso and soft skin she shared with him moments ago.
Tatum is sure he must be blushing.
Itâs the moment her thumb traces his lower lip when they snap.
The atmosphere of fear and uncertainty and mutual understanding so deep it ignites further fear changing into the one of passion and need and fire, fire, fire, burning inside and outside, the moment their lips meet.
He has kissed many girls and he knows Lina has kissed many people too and fuck, they even kissed each other before but this kiss is different, filled with more than just years of friendship (years of love) â filled with years of separation, years of longing, years of pain.
They kiss as if the pressure of their tongues against each otherâs could be their private painkiller.
A moment later they are on the bed and Lina is not sure how they got there, she canât remember they mouths parting but it must be so, because she is laying on her back, her hands firmly against Tatumâs shoulder blades to pull him closer and it still feels like he is not close enough, one of his hands next to her head and the other tangled in her hair, pulling on them and massaging her scalp all at once as he kisses her the way she has never been kissed before.
Linaâs hand moves from his upper back to his shoulder, caressing the old scar there and moves to his chest and his stomach and she feels him growl against the skin of her neck at the touch, the vibrations sending shivers over her whole body; she reaches his waistband and her finger fumble on the button of his trousers as he kisses her collarbone.
His fingers circle her wrist suddenly and he moves her hand away from him, gently (as he always is with her, gentle).
âYou donât want-?â she doesnât know what to say. Me? This? Us?
âI want everything with you, Lina,â he sighs and itâs almost painful sound. âBut I cannot take an advantage of this situation. You are â we both are â worried about your future, exhausted and uncertain and I donât want our first time to happen under such circumstances. You deserve much better.â
There is a part of her that wants to cry again. Sob again and punch someone, because of course he is right.
(It is every single part of her, actually. Every single part wants to cry and sob and punch)
He is right, as he always is. He knows what she needs even when she doesn't know it herself â he always had known. Five years apart did nothing to change that.
Lina traces the lines of Tatum naked torso with her eyes and perhaps it should scare her how familiar it feels. She knows his body, every (almost every. Almost, she reminds herself) scar and every freckle, his flexed muscles and long fingers, she knows his body, even though she grew up getting to know a body of a boy and now her fingers are caressing a body of a man.
She hates how vulnerable she feels and how much she wants to share everything with him. But that's now what she has taught herself, no.
And so, despite the disgusting feeling of tension in her throat, she smirks and asks: "Why do you care about the first time so much?"
Tatum chuckles and makes a show of rolling his eyes (not leaving his position above her, not even now), biting his lower lip deep in his thoughts.
When he looks down at her again, however, his gaze is tender, too tender and intense and Lina has to avert her eyes because surely he can see into her, he can see all that she has done, all that she has caused while he was gone, not there to save her, to take care of her.
"It's not the first time I care about," he speaks softly and any hints of amusement are gone. "It's the first time with you." Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
She almost asks him about his first time â she knows it must have happened after he left. There is the part that is Tatumâs childhood best friend and is simply curious. They shared everything with each other â first crush and first kiss and first platonic love, she knew his and he knew hers. Of course she is curious about his first sex or how many firsts there were, how many people that got to know him in the way she has never gotten.
There is another part of her, a bigger one, she realizes with dread, that hopes he would tell her that he has lost count, that his five years in army were filled with infinite excesses and that he would rather not talk about it â maybe then her deeds would be justified.
She cannot ask him because itâs Tatum and he would ask back.
What would she tell him?
She laughs to herself, a sardonic sound lacking any hint of joy it is supposed to carry.
I have no idea. I am not sure about the first nor about the last time. I cannot count them, I will never be able to count them because I do not remember.
I do not remember.
âLina,â he whispers, still hovering above her. âDonât do that. Stay here with me.â
âI-â she opens her mouth â for what, she doesnât know. To explain or to apologize?
âWe do not have to talk, mahal. We can just lay next to each other until the morning comes, alright?â
Tatum lays down next to her and wraps his arms around her without further questions and as she puts her head on his chest and listens to the steady beat of his heart, she feels calm for the first time in weeks.
âAlright,â she whispers back.
They lay next to each other through the night, listening to each otherâs hearts and breathing and Lina thinks that even though they donât talk, there are novels of conversations exchanged between them that night, written in the softest of sounds they make.
  *** *** ***
Ever since finding out that Tatum is Filipino, I felt this desire in my heart to throw some (nick)names for Lina in his native language here and for him to use them. I canât see him calling her darling on daily basis, but I can see him muttering it in the language he grew up with when the moment asks for it
galyetas = cookie, biscuit (Tatumâs nickname for Lina since forever)
mahal = darling, sweetheart
I am not exactly happy with how the ending turned out but itâs not going to get better so you have to suffer through it with me
Thank you for reading!

Violet Evergarden Movie Summary
The initial plan was to make this a short bullet-point thing, but I felt like there was too much to clarify and I had no choice but use novel references to explain certain parts, so I decided to just write a normal summary. Many thanks before-hand to my friend Yuuki, who gave me all this info.
Apologies for taking relatively long with this thing. Not even I expected that I would end up writing this much. Buckle up for the ride, âcause it wonât be fun.
Nope, not kidding. It really wonât.
First thing I need to make clear is: this movie is one and a half hour long and divided into three parts and two different timelines: the times when Violet existed and the times after she dies. Already in the beginning of the movie, Violet is dead.
Yes, you read this right. Sheâs dead.
Now, I donât mean that sheâs dead in the literal sense. This is 60 years in the future. She might be alive or not, but itâs never said. However, the timeline of 60 years later is considered an era without Violet, apparently because she has retired and her âlegendâ is over, so to say. Itâs also a time where Auto-Memories Dolls donât exist. Thatâs one good punch in the face. Letâs keep counting.
The movie is sort of like a tale being read by someone else, which at some point goes into Violetâs first-person POV. The whole thing is kind of a look back on Violetâs life tragectory and how it took a new turn when she decided to continue looking for Gil despite all the mess of the TV series.
The era where Violet exists is an era where telephones are being introduced to the people, so Auto-Memories Dolls are starting to become unnecessary. I would argue that the creation of the telephone isnât enough for an entire occupation to start disappearing so quickly, since new inventions are normally extremely expensive and not everyone has access to them (or even knows about their existence) so immediately after their conception. Realistically speaking, ghostwriters would still be important as long as there were still so many people unable to buy phones. Not to mention that this is a steampunk world where compulsory education doesnât seem to be a thing yet, so even in the off chance that everybody can buy a phone, there would still be a lot of people who canât read or write on their own. But all of this clearly went over the animatorsâ heads, so not only ghostwriters but also the mail business in general are nearing their doom in the movie.
The one looking back on Violetâs life was Ann, who was telling it all to her granddaughter, Daisy (who, by the way, is voiced by Morohoshi Sumire, the same girl who voiced the seven-year-old Ann). Ann had kept all the letters that Violet ghostwrote for her mother, as well as the newspapers about the CH Postal Company. Looks like the article was printed after Violet left CH, since she isnât in the picture with everyone else.
In this era, CHâs main office has been turned into a museum. Nerine is shown working in it. Of course, sheâs a grandma by then. Speaking of the CH personnel, Erica also quit being an Auto-Memories Doll and became a playwright like Oscar. She appears in the newspaper, though, so she probably a while left after Violet did. Taylor also appears there.
Back to Daisy, she was writing a letter to her parents, in order to learn how to properly convey feelings with written word. The message of this scene seems to be that, no matter the tools, whatâs important is that we convey our feelings to the people we love.
As we see in the trailer, Gilâs mom has passed and Violet runs into Dietfried when visiting her grave on the anniversary of her death. To anyone who is wondering: yeah, Gil never went to see his mother and she died thinking that he was dead.
Nobody knew that Gil was alive. Not his mother, not Dietfried, not the Evergardens and not even Hodgins. No one.
Hereâs what happened to Gil in the anime: he survived the incident at Intense, of course, but got separated from Violet in that explosion. His tag miraculously stayed on the same spot, though, as we saw in the TV series. Now, since this isnât explained in the anime at all, I have to make it clear: the tag is that necklace the soldiers wear. It contains their names and ranks, so that their bodies can be identified even when theyâre irrecognizable. Without the tag, the people who rescued Gil had no idea who he was, so he was sent to a different place to get treated. He ended up at a monastery hospital instead of the one in EnchaĂźnĂ©. I would debate that his uniform alone is enough to identify him as someone from the Leidenschaftlich Army, or maybe they couldâve just asked him which troop he belonged to after he woke up and relocated him to where his fellow men were, but who even cares about all these plot holes anymore? Definitely not me.
Anyway. After Gil was discharged, he ran the fuck away. Like, literally.
If anyone out there was hoping that Gil would finally have his moment to shine as the self-sacrificing, thoughtful and ridiculously kindhearted character that he is in the novel, I have bad news for you. What we had here was even worse than it being Gilâs excuse movie. Itâs like the whole thing was made to drag his character so deep through the mud that heâll never be able to get up again. Thereâs pretty much nothing in this one and a half hour that actually justifies what he did to Violet. Iâll elaborate on this as we go on.
Anime!Gil became a nomad and went traveling. He offed his ass to the island where that lighthouse displayed in the most recent official art is located (thatâs why Gil and Violet were at the beach on the movie poster). He doesnât have a prosthetic in the anime because, apparently, he was more worried about disappearing as fast as possible to somewhere he would never be found, and never attempted to contact anybody. So nobody knew that he was alive, hence the grave, which, as we feared, was not a fake one. His family really did think he had died.
This is a point that I have already addressed before, but that also means Gil really did abandon Violet to luck. If anything dangerous ever happened to her (as it did, and it was always very obviously likely to happen, since she was the southern armyâs most outstanding soldier and quite literally fled from the military), he wouldnât even know. If word ever got to him, it would probably be too late. And even if it werenât, he wouldnât be able to do anything to help her. More than allowing her to live freely, it felt like he was running away from his responsibilities regarding Violet.
Punch on the face count is currently at six.
By sheer coincidence, Violet learns that Gil is living in that island. She goes to see him and Hodgins goes with her after trying to stop her at first. When Gil finds out that they came to see him, he outright refuses to meet them. It pretty much takes the near entirety of the goddamn movie for them to see each other face-to-face. I say face-to-face because all of the following shit happens:
Hodgins goes to talk to Gil. It lasts about 20 minutes.
Gil talks to Violet from behind a door. This one is about 10 minutes.
Dietfried also comes to the island to talk to him. Also about 10 minutes.
At long fucking last, Gil goes to see Violet. But that, too, is only for about 10 minutes.
Hodgins gives him a speech very similar to what happens in chapter 8. Now get ready to fall back from your seats: Dietfried basically goes there to tell Gil that he wonât run away from taking over the family anymore, so Gil can live freely. Yes, Dietfried is officially a better Gilbert than Gilbert himself. I crave death.
So, after much ado, they come to a conclusion: Gil will stay in the island. In order to completely free himself of the shackles of his bloodline, he stays behind, living the way he wants to. âCause all anime!Gil wants is to rot away alone by the sea, apparently. Now prepare yourselves, for it gets worse. Ready?
Violet stays with him in the motherfucking island.
Thatâs right, ladies and gents. Another fear became true. She quits her job at the CH Postal Company and goes to live with him. Well, at least, not as a housewife. She starts working with mail services in the island, and Gil helps her with it. Her life goes on like this and she dies in the island as well.
This is where the timeline after Violet passes away comes into light, parallel to the era when Violet was alive. Daisy talks about what happened after Violet left CH, as if it were a tale from the distant past.
Thatâs it.
The movie paints this as a happy ending. I can hardly see it as one. I know it almost looks like everything was solved, but it just got swept under the rug.
The main point that makes me sad in this ending is that Violetâs character development did a 360 degree flip. In the end, she threw everything to the air and went to live in someone who she always put before everyone else, even herself, but who didnât do the same for her (in the anime). Sheâs gone to a crammed little island, where she led an uneventful life away from everyone and everything thatâs ever had a positive impact on her. All she has is Gil.
Of course, heâs all she needs, but he isnât all she should have, and that was the entire point of pushing her to go live on her own. Which is exactly what she earns in the novel: two loving parents, a father figure, a brother figure, a best friend and several other friends and acquaintances whom she formed a bond with. She has all she needs, so she doesnât have to cling to Gil for any reason. Thereâs no emotional dependance on him anymore. She doesnât need him to be whole. She just wants him because he happens to be the best person sheâs ever met.
Anime!Violet is most definitely not whole. She almost got there, but then she backtracked completely. And anime!Gil... in my friendâs words, is a weakling. Thereâs nothing in him actually worth all this undying blind love. Sure, heâs full of regret and shit, but itâs too easy to only act upon it now, by vanishing into thin air like a coward.
The deal with novel!Gil is that he looks around at everything he has, everything that had been burdening him and killing him on the inside all his life, and decides to make use of it for Violetâs sake. He continues being family head and working in the army, amassing money and connections in order to have every means possible to protect Violet should anything happen to her. And as it turns out, he does end up having to use those means, more than once, but he will keep this up for as long as he needs to, because he lives for her now. Thatâs what makes him worth all the blood, sweat, tears, mental sanity and even body parts that she gave away for his sake: he pays it back. Every cent.
Punch in the face count ends at twelve. Thirteen if I include the fact that the movie ends with a last shot of Violet after she and Gilbert do a pinky swear. Looks like they were really trying to buy everyone with tears.
Oh, well.
I hope this has been a good enough summary. Sorry if I rained on anyoneâs parade. Iâm pretty sure we wonât get a remake ever, so I really wish we all can get over this soon.

Dark Leo -Dark seven au part2
@reading0mens Hope you enjoy it, I put a bit under read more because itâs kinda long XD
Leoâs world is shattered after Jasonâs death
He knows it was a storm or fire
He knows that his cheating death caused the fates to take Jason away
At Jasonâs funereal he cries into Piperâs shoulder
The boy that told him he was important, that made him believe he was worth something was gone
His sorrow makes him burst into flames and as Piper lets go he sinks over his friends grave
Things only got worse from there
He canât look at Calypso anymore
She was the reason he cheated death after all
He thinks about how she always complains about him, never truly helped him as Jason did
He goes back to Camp half-blood not caring that there is a battle coming for the Romans
He couldnât help them anyway
He locks himself in Bunker 9 building machines to distract himself from the cruel reality
Jason Grace was dead and he was alive
Calypso tries to get through to him but he yells at her that he regrets having saved her
He doesnât mean because of her of course but it is still her that he cheated death for
Calypso leaves in tears
Leo continues building and as his hands work on inventions his mind goes to Hera
Why didnât she save Jason?
He was her hero, wasnât he?
The bridge between greeks and Romans
So what kept her from saving him?
Anger begins to rage in him
Maybe Jason was just a tool for her
A weapon she could use and then forget
A scream breaks out of him and flames start floating over everything
He begins to despise the queen of Olympus just like he once hated Gea
At least Gea never acted like she wanted to protect them
He feels a desire to make Hera pay, to play with her just like she did with him
He knows that he can't take revenge on Hera all by himself Isn't there an emperor in new york
A plan starts to form in his head
Nyssa brings him the news
Camp Jupiter beat Caligula and Commodus now only Nero is left
The only change for Leo to take revenge on Hera
He leaves in the early morning
He is not nervous only strangely excited
Finding the emperor was not hard he could oversee the whole city on his metal dragon
âWhat do you want demigod?â, Nero asks coldly sitting on his throne arrogant as always
Leo only smiles darkly âI want to treat Hera just like she treated me and my friends.â
Nero has picked up many demigods from the streets but this one is special
He has an almost feral look in his eyes like he would be ready to burn the world
âAnd how exactly do plan to do that? Nero asks his voice full of curiosity
After hearing the plan Nero allows Leo to stay
He has a big room full of machines, engines automatons
Leo loves it
He builds robots small ones at first but his anger makes his talents grow
Somehow he manages to equip them with laser eyes ten arms that shoot fire canons, their fingers made of blades
He makes other inventions to ones that he prays to one day use on a certain goddess
A part of him is terrified of his work but another screams justice for Jason so he continues
Two weeks later Leo gives Hazel and Frank a surprise visit
They are happy to see him, they are his friends after all
Leo laughs with them, jokes as if everything was normal
One night he and Frank even mourn Jason together
When he feels real tears form in his eyes he is grateful for Franks hug
He can tell that Frank wants him to feel loved just like Jason once did
He is thankful and when Frank leaves his firewood feels heavy in Leoâs hand
The next day horns are blowing, demigods scream in terror
A huge robot army is threatening to enter new Rome
The Legion is horrified but they swore to protect the city so they get ready for battle
None of them is showing their fear when they stand between the robots and their city
Reyna and Frank stand before their cohorts but Frank is not too worried
Those robots are made of metal and he sees in Hazelâs smile that she knows this too
The daughter of Pluto raises her hand to save those she loves
But then a voice close to her speaks up coldly
âHazel stop â, She almost did not recognize it
Leo stands a few feet away eyes gleaming darkly, Franks stick lays in his hand
Franks feels a cold dread in his stomach
âLeoâŠ...what are you doing? Frank asks unable to hide his fear
Leo lets out a pained humourless laugh, Iâm destroying the god's ego by crashing their glorious temples.â he explains and Hazel feels her heartbreak at his words
How is this the same boy who made her smile with his jokes
Reyna cursesâ How dare you betray us? After Jason-â
Leo interrupts her with a mad shout
âThat's exactly my point! Jason died because Hera for some reason refused to save him. We are all just puppets for the gods donât you see that!âI'm trying to save us from them but if you donât surrender now I will be forced to let you suffer for the god's crimes.â, Leo explains his tone almost hysteric
There is silence for a moment
The robots stand like dead status, new Rome's citizens glance towards them from behind the barrier, the roman soldiers are glaring at Leo
âRomans donât surrender.â, Frank finally responds his voice brave, his eyes full of pain
Leo smirks like he expected that answer
His whole body bursts into flame
Frank falls to the ground as his stick is swallowed by fire
Pain ignites in his heart, he hears Hazelâs scream
He looks at his girlfriend a hand stretched towards her as if to hold her one last time
She stretches her hand towards him as well, her mouth moving as she sobs
A weak scream leaves his lips when a Robots blade impales her neck the blade coming out bloody at her throat
Her hand sinks, her body collapses into a puddle of her blood and Frankâs world goes black
Leo stares at their unmoving bodies
The stick in his hands is now only ashes
He knows he should feel something
He should feel remorse
Instead, he just feels empty
The gods could have saved them but they didnât
If the gods would just be better he would not have done this
The gods are to blame not him
So he joins the massager
The demigods are fighting bravely but nothing prepared them to fight eight feet high machines
Blades are piercing through their bodies, the fire burns their flesh, dozens get trampled
Leo is in the middle of it all shooting fireballs burning everyone who gets too close
A fireball hits Reynaâs hair and the Praetor is doomed to a firey cruel death
Soon the city falls, Terminus  barrier is not strong enough to hold the metal beasts off
New Romes citizens are slaughtered in their streets, their buildings, temples destroyed
Their screams ring in Leoâs ears but he continues to fight
This is for Jason. This is for Jason
He keeps using this excuse even though a part of him tells him that Jason wouldnât have wanted this
When Leo the last screams finally have died new Rome is in ruins
On Olympus, the gods are raging
Their pride has never been attacked like this
Hera looks at Leo wandering through the dead city with worry
He was her hero once just like Jason but now he seems âŠ..changed
Maybe somehow she could convince him to come back to her
She is his grandmother after all
So she goes down to him in the form of his old babysitter
Leo growls when he sees he sees her
âNow you decide to show up? After I slaughtered thousands of People? Wow you are a horrible patron goddess!â, He snarls
Hera looks at him in pity
âLeo I know you are angry but this is madness. Jasons death was in the hand of the fates and I couldnât do anything sometimes even we gods are powerless. Donât go down this road my hero it will only bring you to suffering.â Hera warns but that only makes Leo more furious.
They are standing in the smouldering ruins of her city and yet all she can do is makeup excuses
âYou âŠâŠ..you are so arrogant Hera! First, you act like my protector, my babysitter for years and then you donât even save my mother, then you give me fake memories about my best friend and then when Iâm finally growing closer to him you watch him die too. I bet if I hadnât killed Frank today you would have done it! Jason Frank and I were just pawns whose lives you controlled and that you now donât need anymore!â, Leo yells his hands balled into fists.
Hera listens to her face showing guilty embarrassment
She is too lost in thought, that is why she sees the net that Leo throws over her too late
The strings are made of celestial bronze but when she tries to escape the net only grows tighter cutting into her skin
Leo smiles at her in amusement.
âI hope you enjoy your new home your high majesty., He mocks
Hera realized that this was all part of his plan
Destroying new Rome to get her attention, louring her here so he could capture her
âLet me go immediately demigod or my wrath-â. She is cut off when Leo gags her
He has enough to listen of listening to her
He just wants to visit Jason's grave one last time
Leo returns to Nero with his army and with Hera
She is carried by one of the Robots trapped in metal strings
Nero welcome Leo with open arms
This child is a blessing even better than Meg Mc Caffrey
He tells Leo that he wants to wait with his attack on the greeks
He wants the news about camp Jupiter to reach them first
Leo agrees and grins at Hera
The goddess tries to change from even her real one but the strings only golden
âThey drain your godly essence. The emperors are no strangers to dark magic Hera. You wonât get out of here unless I allow it.â, Leo mocks once he has taken her to his room
The image of Her lying helpless and restrained on the ground gives him chills of joy
He picks out a knife from his toolbelt, Heras's eyes widen
âNow let's see how you like being hurt without someone there to help.â Leo muses and drives the blade into the goddess's arm.
He smiles at the golden blood and Heras agonized groan
He is going to have so much fun with her
Leo almost feels disappointed when Nero tells him that itâs time for the attack
By now all demigods know what happened
Chiron evacuated Camp half-blood taking the younger Campers to safety
Nero knows itâs only a matter of time until the rest disappears to
So Leo and the emperor fly to  Long island alone with Festus who hold Hera in his claws
The robots are deactivated until Leo's command, Nero wants to give his enemies hope of winning
A handful of Campers is already waiting for them at the top of Half-blood hill
Leo winces when he sees Percy and Nico
He had forgotten the people close to Frank and Hazel
âSurrender or face the same end as your roman friends!â, Nero demands
Percy spits to the ground
Nico gets out his sword his eyes piercing into Leo soul
âDo you think Jason still loves you after what you did Leo?â, Nico asks coldly
Leoâs heart feels like itâs torn apart
Nicoâs words are the truth in the back of his mind. The truth that his lust for revenge drowned out
Jason, sweet kind Jason would never love someone who killed his friends
Leo feels panic, he has to move forward he has to distract himself from his thoughts
âLet that be my concern.â, Leo spats and drops Hera to the ground
Her body is covered in deep cuts, golden blood covers the strings
The attack begins
Leo decides to take out Percy first
He shoots fire but Percy uses the lake to his advantage
Water and fire clash together in the air squishing as they meet
Leo gets more furious
He creates big flames that lit the threes next to Percy on fire, tiny flames to grasp Percyâs hair
Percy seems to be prepared for everything
He protects himself with shields of water and creates tentacles in an attempt to drag Leo to the ground
Their fight is hard, full of hatred and so none of them notices Nicoâs fight against Nero
Until the emperor screams while he's being sucked into the earth
Neros household, all young brainwashed demigods panic and run
Leo yells in frustration
Why did he choose such bad allies?
Nico collapses from the uses of his underworld powers, the grass around him black
Leo wants to take his chance and flames flicker from his hand#
But then a big hand of water grabs him and lifts him off his dragon
Leo is taken by surprise but soon blind rage follows
âNow!â, He hears Percx yell and when he turns his head he sees Annabeth cutting Heras net with Nicoâs stygian sword
Desperation and fear will Leo
âNo please!â, He Beggs but Percy drops him on the ground without mercy
Hera although wounded immediately grows to full size her eyes blazing with fury
âI WARNED YOU MY HERO NOW FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS.âHera yells her form glowing
âNo wait!â, Percy says his eyes widened in shock
Leo knows what is coming, he has seen it once before
Tears of sorrow, of fear, of anger stream down his cheeks
He wonders if Hades will let him see Jason again after he murdered his daughter
In a last attempt to turn his fate he reaches for his toolbelt
But then he stops
How can he destroy the greeks after they took him in after they tried to make him belong somewhere?
His thoughts wander to Piper and his heart is split by deep guilt
Leo Valdez opens his eyes and stares right into the godly flames that even he canât survive
His last thought is a prayer of forgiveness to all he has killed in his path for revenge
Leo is buried at Camp half-blood
There are a lot of discussions about it but no one can think of a better place
Hera assures the Campers that in a few years there will be new roman demigods
This does not help the losses though
Percy and Annabeth spend many nights crying with each other about their lost friends, their lost future
Will has to hold Nico for countless nights too, Has to remind him that he always will be there for him
Apollo becomes a god again
And in California Piper Mclean cries out her prayers to the gods
She prays for them to free her out of these new fake mist reality
She prays for them to let her wake up in a world where her best friends are still alive
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Honestly I wished Hoo went more into the fact that frank Jasons and Leos lives were all controlled by Hera! That would have been such an interesting dynamic!

boundaries; jeon wonwoo
(4090 words) - large
summary - the truth hurts, secrets hit harder.
requested - đ
Y/N strode into his dorm with a sigh, breaths fading into the silence that fell upon his shoulders. He shrugged off his jacket and tried his best to enjoy the few fleeting moments of quiet before rampant shuffling stormed through the doorway in a Wonwoo-shaped tangle. Dramatic groans overtook them and filled the room with the colours of the weathered moonlight left staining their sweatshirts. Wonwoo took Y/N by the waist, his best friendâs protests that slithered form between clenched teeth falling upon deaf ears and sinking further into the haze of cheap tequila that still lines their tongues.
Trying not to melt to the touch wound around Y/Nâs waist was harder to him than his finals last semester. It brought something, this feeling of ease and comfort up to thrash at the back of his throat - an impression Y/N has been battling for far too long.Â
There was always something about Wonwoo that made Y/Nâs heart stop and flutter at the same time, that made the flames of happiness which always seemed on the brink of withering in his chest burn with a joyful passion. It was Wonwooâs observant and patient gaze that somehow never seemed to lose itâs warm glimmer since primary school, his inviting presence that made Y/N want to spill all his feelings from between his lips. The subtle touches between them under city lights and between fights for the good game controller didnât help Y/N keep this blissful pain trapped within his heart.
They staggered further into the room, Y/N trying not get impaled by his coat hook or stub his toe for the nineteenth time that day on his coffee table. Wonwoo couldnât care less, though, all he needed was to lay down, drown himself in the ivory moonlight drenching their floors and sleep off the sting of bacardi that lingered in his throat.Â
In Y/Nâs struggle for freedom from Wonwooâs uneven steps guiding them to the living room, they tripped over the arm of their couch and collided as Y/Nâs back hit the seat. At that very moment, everything seemed to still - the twilight draped over them, the breaths that seeped into Y/Nâs skin - everything. Wonwoo couldnât see the panic that ignited within Y/Nâs eyes and the shivers that coursed through his veins.
Y/Nâs skin crawled with every languishing sigh from Wonwoo that faded through his chest and sent his heart thrashing at his ribs. He tried to move but the weight on his chest only anchored him in place, helpless. All he could do was soak in the warmth on top of him that screamed at him to stay. He took a bunch of the red couch fabric between his fingers, hearing the swansongs of their springtime study sessions dance in his memory and plague every beat of his heart as he tried not to let it burst from under his breathless lungs. The fires that danced in Y/Nâs chest whenever Wonwoo would brush against him and brighten the sunlight streaming between their windows, bit into his skin. Taunting him. Lapping at him in a fit of spite as their hands slowly inched together at the edge of the couch.Â
He couldnât take it. The walls that kept his longing for Wonwooâs affection in check being torn apart, brick by brick in such a meticulous manner he thought the starlight that fell against his contorted face was plotting against him. Living like this - in a lie wrapped in fake smiles and practical jokes - only made his eight-year plight that much harder to bear.
âWonwooâŠâ Y/N finally let some words break out from behind his pursed lips, his shaking hand fighting with itself as he took a lock of Wonwooâs hair between his fingers. âWonwoo, get upâŠâ It took everything in Y/N not to sigh in relief as the breaths kneading into his neck faded to halt and the body sprawled against his chest snapped to attention.
âOh my God, Iâm sorry, I probably suffocated you.â Wonwoo murmured through his lips, a liquor stained groan filling the air between them as Y/N decided to sit up. The feelings that his thoughts of their entwining fingers brought upon him stained his cheeks with the shiraz poured over their boring weekends.Â
Their memories of rose-gold evenings and mornings spent cuddled up in blankets when the heating went down lit the galaxies forged between their stares. Y/N couldnât shake it - the way Wonwoo made him feel. He couldnât shed the skin dyed by Wonwooâs reckless tickling or the words mumbled into half-deaf ears as they read their favourite books aloud into the indigo night.Â
âIt-itâs okay,â Y/N pushed past his trance and nodded his head to seemingly nobody. âYou should probably get to bed.â His heart was racing but completely still at the same time - stuck in a freeze-frame of perplexity but still leaping hurdles in his ribs in the single second their eyes locked.
âYou wanna come?â Wonwoo murmured into the silence between them.
âWhat?âÂ
âI dunno, we did it beforeâŠâ Y/N shuddered as they both remembered the time they went drinking and barely made it past the kitchen. Amber hazes of whiskey bubbles clouded his memories in between, but the feeling of waking up in the tangles of Wonwooâs sheets is one he will never forget. The arms draped against his waist, the careless cursing beside him that seeped into his neck. All of it was a daydream dressed in the light of dawn. However, Y/N could feel his regret boiling in his stomach that entire day, though, morning to night - his hangover was the least of his worries. âYou look tired too. How long was I out?â Wonwoo changed the subject, scratching his head with a wince.
âLong enough that I didnât let you break my ribcage.â Y/N tried to force a chuckle between his teeth and into the tension lingering between them like cheap cologne.Â
âI'm not that heavy!â Wonwoo folded his arms in mock offense, rolling his eyes and letting them tumble with the moonlight that crept between him and the man still under him. âThen again you wouldnât know âcause youâre the smallest spoon on the planet.â
All of the thoughts, the memories, the buried feelings and unheard oaths echoed into crystal skies rose in Y/Nâs chest, shoving his heart into his throat. He didnât want to think about the blessing just out of his reach, the voice that has sung him out of stupors and the smile that still shines as bright as the first day they met - dressed in cargo shorts and coral sunlight.
âWonwoo, stop.â Y/N couldnât withstand the truth that beat into his hopeful heart anymore. He shook his head, the violet night crumbling from off his frown as he trembled under the weight of Wonwooâs hips and the glow of his moonlit stare.
âWhat-â
âCan you stop talking about all thatâŠ?â
âWhatâs the problem? Are you okay? Youâre blushing-â
âWonwoo!â Y/N snapped, taking the sudden silence like a shot as the room froze around them. The moonlight shuddered under the weight of his shaking voice.
âSorry, didnât mean to strike a nerveâŠâ Wonwoo couldnât read the feelings scrawled across Y/Nâs frown, whether it be the indigo shadows cast over them or the way Y/Nâs eyes rose up to his like the mists between their fingers as they talked shit at the nearby port. The way the light trembled within Y/Nâs gaze, Wonwoo knew there was something more.
âIâŠâ Y/N choked on his words, gasping for thoughts. âI need to tell you something.â
It was only when Wonwoo started to clamber out from between Y/Nâs thighs that they realized how long they were like that. How haphazardly their worlds collided as often as they did. Wonwoo could almost taste the bitter silence that strangled his breath and shifted back to the opposite side of the couch. The way Y/Nâs blush glowed under the moonlight - some part of him, deep down in the crevices of his wandering thoughts, he felt something, an ancient calling. Eight years worth of memories shared under rusty front doors and whispers into their evening coral sunsets meant more to them than they ever would have thought. They didnât notice how the glimmers in their shared smiles made them feel or how the touches between them lingered just enough to ignite the fires of joy under their skin. Well, at least Wonwoo didnât.
Nevermind taking in the warmth of Wonwooâs grip on his waist or getting up before seven. This was the hardest thing Y/N has ever had to do. Let his feelings finally spill out from between his teeth - all the secrets he murmured out his bedroom window and the vows of admiration that he would sing Wonwoo to sleep with as they held each other tight in front of the television. All of it.Â
Y/N postured up and gripped the cushion he pressed himself up against, hoping that the coarse red fabric running between his fingers could dampen the burning memories of their peaceful afternoons sifting through pages of their textbook. With Wonwooâs fingers running through his hair taunting him, beckoning a confession from his bitten lip.
âI donât⊠I donât wanna ruin anythingâŠâ Y/N forced slivers of words between his teeth, eyes too focused on his quivering hands, thoughts too fastened on Wonwoo possibly walking out the door they just stumbled through.
âWeâve been through a lot, Y/N. What-â Wonwoo tried to read Y/Nâs expression, fight through this thick haze of confusion and sudden anguish that suddenly flooded the room and danced with the moonlight. Almost taunting him and his thoughts as he could practically hear the ear-piercing shrieks of Y/Nâs quivering breath - a resolve crumbling to the carpet below them. âY/N! What-â
âIâm bi.â Y/N finally burst through his hopelessness and already averted his eyes from Wonwooâs blank stare. Even eight years in, he could never decipher those enrapturing, brown eyes that spun the sunlight into gold and was home to Y/Nâs gaze on those evenings when words couldnât come out.
âUhm⊠WhatâŠ?â Wonwoo was frozen, the words Y/N sent circling under the night cast over them leaving him with no words on his tongue, but when Wonwoo thought about it, Y/N unsheathing his truth, a fragment of identity that he now accepts, makes him happy.
âI like guys, sometimesâŠâ
âOh, okay.â Wonwoo shrugged his shoulders, only to stop once more as a frown was etched into Y/Nâs features.
ââOkayâ?! Is that all you have to say?â Y/N nearly lept off the couch in a blurred amalgamation of frustration, relief and surprise, a burden on his shoulders that heâs carried under the shadows of fake smiles and secrets, vows and dreams whispered into weathered walls now revealed for what? A shrug as if the breath heâs been holding for years was just the summer rain that drummed against their dorm windows or the spring breeze that grazed their fingers. âI just⊠Thatâs it?â
âWhat do you want me to say?âÂ
âI donât know! This probably changes everything!â Y/N hurled himself up from off the couch, grabbing at his hair. Wonwoo sat up to follow him.
âNo, Y/N-â Wonwoo cut himself off as he walked closer to Y/N, desperation thrashing at his ribs ias the spotlight of the ivory moonlight spilled down both of their cheeks, clawing into pursed lips and eyes lit ablaze in irritation. âDonât be like that!â
âIt doesnât bother you?â As Y/N saw Wonwooâs expression, the breath lodged in his throat eased out from between his lips. The searing heat of panic clawed into his skin in a scarlet blush subsiding under the veil of Wonwooâs tiny grin. One that always seemed to make the flames of happiness leap in his chest.
âOf course not!â Wonwoo gestured back to the couch, hoping that a conversation could clear things up, a smile across his face as they made their way back, sighs of relief following in their footsteps.Â
âHow long have you felt that wayâŠ?â Wonwoo started again as they sat back down, a calmness settled over them and mingling with the indigos of the night settled over them in sheets of starlight. âI mean, how long have you known about your bisexuality?â
âYouâre taking this awfully well.â Y/N arched a brow, suspicious.
âItâs not like the world is turned on its head. Now tell me, how long?â
âItâs a long storyâŠâ The tension in Y/Nâs chest seemed to deplete completely as he let the words spill from out of him. Truths, feelings, wishes sung to the summer stars let out from the prison of Y/Nâs doubts and misgivings.
âWeâve got time, my class isnât until nine.â Wonwoo tried to reach out, but winced as Y/N flinched his hand away, even now, his compulsion dodged the tone of their conversation.
âFineâŠâ Y/N sighed into the violets between liquor stained breaths, relaxing the hand he pulled back and soaking in the warmth of the slender fingers that stroked soothingly at his knuckles. âIâve known deep inside me for quite a while, and it hasnât been easy because the people I liked either turned out to be homophobic or taken - literally my life in a nutshell.â
Wonwoo stifled a chuckle in his sleeve, but instantly stopped as Y/N glared at him.
âBut, I didnât really feel confident about it until I met someone who accepted me for my little mannerisms.â Y/Nâs glare faded away as memories piled onto his tongue like a barrage of blessings, âhe was kind and sweet to me in a time I felt shunned by society. Even though I talked the way I did, I acted the way I did⊠They accepted me and noticed me, they gave me the chance at friendship. Being in their company made me feel like I had a huge weight lifted off of me, like I didn't have to carry the burden of being different because they embraced me for it. Naturally⊠I began to develop feelings for them, not just because we were close, but because they invited me into their home and made me feel like I deserved to walk on the ground beneath my feet. They made me feel very special and deserving of all the things everybody else had. It wasnât just a schoolboy crush on the guy across the street. Something felt different, butterflies in my stomach that wouldnât stop fluttering whenever I saw them smile, the way my heart stopped when he would hold my hand for no reason or whenever I heard his voice call my name.â
âWowâŠâ Wonwoo just stared in awe of the downpour of uncovered admiration that Y/N had stifled in corners of his heart for years now, a soft grin weaved between his lips as he could see something visibly lift from off Y/Nâs shoulders - a burden lifted. âThey- HeâŠ? Who was he?â âSorry, I know itâs not my place-â
âIt was you, dummy!â
Wonwoo never manages to disappoint.
âMeâŠ? I didnât know I made you feel that loved.â Wonwooâs smile shone even brighter, a brilliance that radiated from the shimmers in his eyes to his fingers that tied with Y/Nâs in, the feeling of their hands touching like a slow burn onto their skin. All of the thoughts that lingered at the back of his mind, the way Y/Nâs presence lit the skylines and snow-capped rooftops ablaze with his reckless joy. The nights he spent between Wonwooâs thighs as they skimmed their textbooks together. Noisy evenings shared under shitty city lights and coffee stained sundays that wound around them like their winter nights and stung like cherry chapstick. It was all rushing back to him to a point where he was questioning how oblivious he was to everything since they met. Maybe the heavenly light of Y/N smile that rested on him a little too long never caught his eye. Maybe having your fingers dance with the threads of the moonlight wasnât something normal friends did. âIâm glad I did, though. âCause you are.â It just took Wonwoo the largest, brightest most blatant signal to realise it.
âWhatâŠ?â
That they were not just friends, that the vows spilled from idle lips and into the steam of cheap ramen, or the open arms that wound around shoulders and waists sealed more than just their tireless nights.
âYeah, Y/N. I love you. Iâve loved youâ Even now, the flames of their admiration had no direction. It still took a second to have them soak into Wonwooâs skin. The moments of silence between their worlds felt like forever, smiles rising and thoughts clouding mindlessly as words settled under the haze of the night.
âWonwoo⊠I⊠You-â Y/N just stayed plastered in his spot, every muscle unmoving even when Wonwoo inched closer. âDonât screw with me. Iâm not drunk, I really mean it!â
Wonwoo tried one more time to hold Y/Nâs hand, a grin flourishing onto his face as fingers entwined with his. He pulled it close to his chest. It was a signal, like âI knowâ. A gesture of sincerity and tenderness theyâve never really shared without a second thought.
âI met you, and you made me feel like I belonged in a world that I thought abandoned me in my doubts. When we spent time together, I got butterflies countless times, I felt those same sparks fly through me.â Wonwoo caressed Y/Nâs knuckles and watched his best friend with a smile as the silence between practically begged him to continue, to release his truth that he didnât even know he was hiding. âYour smile was so kind, so reassuring and it drove me mad, your hands as they grasped onto mine made me feel warm and protected and cherished - even when you were just dragging me down the street.â They shared a giggle, âI just didnât want to say anything because⊠What if you didnât feel the same? I couldâve ruined everything⊠Or so I thought.â
âWonwoo, you dummy.â Y/N tugged on Wonwooâs hands and took him into an embrace that has never made the both of them feel so whole before, and has never aligned the stars under their skin like this. They could feel a sweetness surging under their fingertips as they hummed into each otherâs shoulders with this new, unearthed comfort. Y/N melted into the arms wound around his waist, small laughs dying their skin amber with the liquor still staining their tongues. âThatâs so sweet, I had no idea you felt the same wayâŠâ They relished in the ivory glow of the twilight draping over their shoulders and igniting their smiles. âYouâre not mad at me for keeping secretsâŠ?â
âOf course not!â Wonwoo pulled back and grabbed at Y/Nâs shoulders, seizing his gaze within his own. âIn fact, thank you for telling me, if you didnât I donât think I couldâve actually told you I loved you.â Wonwoo couldnât help but stare at the stars lining Y/Nâs stare, galaxies he wishes he would have explored earlier.Â
âSo, now what?â
âI say ice cream tomorrow.â Wonwoo hummed. His smile couldnât help but grow as Y/Nâs eyes lit ablaze, a grin flourishing.
âLike⊠Like a date?â
The word left Wonwoo stilled for a moment. âDateâ... He never knew that he would use that word with Y/N. He has never been happier to hear it from the voice that lights his skin on fire, and from between those polarising lips heâs always been cursing himself for looking at too long. He let that idea plunge into the depths of his thoughts for a second, all of their traditions stained with a rose-coloured sky, strawberry sands by their horizons and copper sunlight soaking their whispers.
âY-yeah, itâs a date!â Y/N could see it now just as Wonwoo ushered those words from his smile; their hands tied with pride. He reached out to hug Wonwoo one more time, but his best friend beat him to it. Wonwooâs leap of excitement left them stumbling on the couch and out to the hallway. The hardwood that once felt frigid under them warming more and more as they imagined the circles they would dance in the kitchen, swaying to the rhythm of their hearts as the afternoon sun shone down on them like a golden spotlight.
âIâm so glad youâve accepted me, Woo.â Y/N perched his hands on Wonwooâs shoulders. A lifetime of struggles, dead prayers to the sunset and concerns that trembled upon his lips were sent to wither away with the sparks between the fingers heâs wanted to tie between his for what feels like dozens of lifetimes. The sweetness caught between their smiles and Wonwooâs slender fingers that caressed his cheeks and kneaded into his side drowned him in his grace.Â
To be accepted and shown that he was deserving of the slivers of confidence that fell upon him like a blue moon was all Y/N wanted, and Wonwoo gave that to him. The truth was never so liberating. He felt weightless, as if he was a bird in the cloudless skies they would watch together on the football fields at dawn. Even then, when the aurora blue sent shivers down his spine, the glow of the happiness Wonwoo held between his lips kept the whispers between the blades of grass at the back of his mind.Â
Wonwooâs hold on Y/Nâs waist grew firm as he led them a few steps down the hallway. He slowly eased Y/N up against a wall, the walls seared with the embers of their quiet laughter and stained by the weathered moonlight they held between their hands on their late night study sessions - ivory whispers wound around them as they fell asleep at the edge of Y/Nâs bed.
âHow could I not? It feels good, knowing that you know how much I appreciate you.â Wonwoo took Y/Nâs hands in his. Finally, his fingers entwined for more than a quick second, hands no longer grazing in an awkward silence, but melding in the swansongs of their deepest desires. Y/N looked up at Wonwoo, hearing those words escape from Wonwooâs lips igniting wildfires in his grin.Â
He never imagined this happening anywhere other than in his dreams, trembling ambitions daring to burst from under whiskey dyed horizons. He never imagined being this close to his best friend feeling anything other than the panic that preened at his bones.
âIâm glad you finally know how I feel about you. It felt good to get out, even if a series of awfully weird events took us there.â They shared a chuckle, the gilded sting of whiskey still stirring in their sighs of comfort. âYou know what?â Y/N tilted his head, eyes narrowed.
âWhat?â
âI just realized something.â Y/N let his hands wander from Wonwooâs shoulders and down to his chest, his smile growing wider, he didnât even know how long he was grinning until he felt his lips ache and the crescents of his gaze wane a little. âOur gay-darâs are the literal worst.â A giggle escape from them both as their sudden realization sent them both spiralling into the skies they split with their laughter.
âOh my God they really are!â
âWe are terrible gays.â
âWell, at least we can be terrible gays togetherâŠâ
âI wouldnât want it any other way.â They interlock their fingers, no hesitating, no shock. Just comfort, peace, nothing but the swansongs of their unearthed admiration dancing between their breaths. âThis feels very right.â
âIt really does.â Wonwoo brings Y/Nâs knuckles to his lips, to feel his lps grace his skin with such purpose made all of his sighs into the pale moonlight align, and finally conjure into their reality. âI love you, Y/N, I want you to know how much I mean it.â All he wants to do now is to just spend hours conquering the night with Y/Nâs face in his hands, nothing but the symphonies of their entwining breaths and the melodies of the summer rain to keep them company.
âWell, we have eight years to make up for, so Iâm ready when you are.â
âBeen readyâŠâ

Endeavour Theory: Has Morse Already Crossed Paths With Nemesis Hugo de Vries?
https://ift.tt/3ivQyUa
Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 7 and Inspector Morse episode âMasonic Mysteriesâ.
Thereâs a beauty to mystery that could hardly be lost on fans of Endeavour, a series with playfulness in its bones, as evidenced by its regular tips of the hat to pop culture and Morse creator Colin Dexter. The showâs viewers understand that ambiguities deliberately positioned as such should be allowed to stand, unaccosted by any fun-sucking need for certainty. Weâre not here to unweave rainbows or clip angel wings. Â
That said, Endeavour does love a game, and its fans love to play along. So while appreciating that some things are destined to rightly remain in the hazy hinterland of maybe, letâs play. The name of this game? Find Hugo de Vries!
Played by Ian McDiarmid in Inspector Morse Series 4 episode âMasonic Mysteriesâ (1990), Hugo de Vries is a fan-favourite villain in the world of Morse. Erudite and cultured with a love of classical music, he has much in common with the detective, as is fitting for any two nemeses. A great difference of course, is that de Vries is a diabolical killer utterly without conscience.Â
Ian McDiarmid as Hugo de Vries in Inspector Morse Series 4 episode âMasonic Mysteriesâ
In de Vriesâ one and only Inspector Morse appearance, Morse finds himself framed for the murder of a woman from his choir, which is staging a production of Mozartâs The Magic Flute. After the murder, Morse finds almost ÂŁ100,000 transferred to his bank account from the charity administrated by the victim. Morseâs personal file on the police computer is hacked to insert a fictional past event in which he supposedly attacked a woman, and his guvnor â McNutt at the time â covered it up. His home is set on fire, heâs pulled over and breathalysed after an anonymous complaint is made about his erratic driving, his Jag is vandalised with masonic symbols and McNuttâs dead body is discovered in his bathroom. All of it, realises an increasingly unhinged Morse, is the work of de Vries, whoâs borne a grudge against Morse since his sergeant days.
Endeavour being the story of those very days, Inspector Morse fans have been watching the prequel closely for a cameo by the younger Hugo de Vries. After another âMasonic Mysteriesâ character, Marion Brooke, turned up in Series 3âs âArcadiaâ, Endeavour writer Russell Lewis was asked in this 2017 interview whether Endeavour would one day bump into de Vries. Lewis replied, âEach thing in its season. I shouldnât be surprised to see him sooner or later.â
Jump forward four years to a post-Series Eight finale exchange on Twitter when Lewis is asked the same question. The writerâs answer this time is more playful. âAh, Hugo. Who can say if he hasnât already crossed our path? He might well have done, of course. On the other hand⊠âNow you see him, now you donât. Thatâs de Vries all rightâ.â
Ryan Gage as Ludo Talenti in Endeavour Series 7
In the spirit of investigation, letâs assess the evidence. Is Lewis just teasing or has Hugo de Vries already crossed our path in Endeavour, namely in the form of Ryan Gageâs Series Seven villain Ludo Talenti?
That name alone may contain all the clue we need. Not only do Hugo and Ludo bear more than a glancing resemblance, but the latter in Latin is the first person of the verb âto playâ. âI play⊠many talentsâ would be an inelegant translation. A better one might include the possible allusion to Patricia Highsmithâs famous conman Tom Ripley, given the epithet âTalentedâ in his first appearance. Like Ripley, both Hugo and Ludo are master manipulators who charm and inveigle their way to wealth, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake.Â
To jog the memory, Ludo recurred throughout Series Seven, initially presenting himself as a university contemporary of Morseâs who ran into him after Morseâs wallet was lifted at a garden concert (almost certainly a ruse designed to engineer the âaccidentalâ meeting). Ludo befriended Morse and the pair bonded over a shared love of opera. Ludoâs family is in shipping, he tells Morse, and he travels around raising money for their charitable fund, driven by a pursuit of music and beautiful women.Â

Endeavour: The Beautiful Poignancy of Series 8âs Last Lines
By Louisa Mellor
When Morse asks him which country heâs from, Ludo is coy, preferring to say he is a âman of the world.â He later tells a childhood story about life during Nazi occupation, which throws up various suggestions but like so much Ludo says, that could well be fiction. For what itâs worth, the saying he cites as from his country, âDo not praise a day before sunset,â is Polish. And what of Hugo de Vriesâ nationality? Ian McDiarmidâs accent in âMasonic Mysteriesâ is difficult to place, though the name is Dutch (borrowed from a famous botanist), and he faked his death in prison in Sweden. (Ludo incidentally tells Morse that he posed as a Swedish policeman on the phone once to track the detective down.) Ludoâs name, itâs revealed in the Series 7 finale, was taken from the gravestone of a 16th century priest on Veniceâs San Michele cemetery island.
Ludo Talentiâs priest namesake revealed in Endeavourâs Series 7 finale
To tot up the similarities so far, thatâs two criminals, of indiscriminate European origin, around Morseâs age, fluent in the language of classical music and opera, living under assumed names. Both also share a snobbish disdain for the police. Ludo expressed surprise that a man as cultured as Morse would be âa lumpen, plodding petty officialâ while Hugo sneered at Morseâs colleagues going about in pairs âlike low comedians.â They also share a similarly rarefied, Bond Villain-ish way of speaking (Every man has his price, every man, I shall make it my lifeâs business to find yours,â), and express the same nihilistic attitude. âLife, death, rich, poor, itâs all a roll of the dice, Morse, thereâs no reason to any of it,â says Ludo, foreshadowing Hugoâs words when he forces Morse to his knees at gunpoint in âMasonic Mysteriesâ. âHe was clever, you see,â Inspector Morse tells Lewis in that episode, âhe took one look and knew your weakness right away.â In Series 7, Ludo jokes to Morse that he will find his weakness and exploit it without mercy to his own ends.
What else? The nature of their crimes. In âMasonic Mysteriesâ Morse tells Lewis that his past encounter with de Vries saw him con Oxford University out of millions of pounds. His scam had a kind of poetry to it â posing as the heir to a Swedish armaments manufacturer, de Vries proposed the building of an institute for peace studies. His later scheme involved stealing money from Marion Brookeâs charitable foundation to frame Morse.Â
Paperwork from Ludoâs life insurance policy scam. Note the signature.
Ludoâs Series 7 scheme was less poetic, but of a similar flavour. He bought up life insurance policies of people looking for a quick pay out, killed them, cashed in, and disguised the deaths as freak accidents. One such victim was poor Carrie Bright, the cancer-suffering wife of ACC Bright. (In a rather baroque twist, the initials of the locations for each murder spelled out the name L.U.D.O.). Both men wore disguises to do their evil work â de Vries posed as a homeless man to murder Morseâs former guvnor McNutt, and Talenti posed as a healer to gain access to the Bright home and sabotage their Christmas lights, causing Mrs Brightâs death by electrocution. Note in the image above the name of the Executive Director of Ludoâs fake company âCalifornia Amenity Redemption and Disbursementâ (or C.A.R.D, perhaps another game-play referenceâŠ) in the signature on one of his victimâs letters: E. De Vere?
Hugo and Ludo didnât work alone on their devilish schemes, they each had a female accomplice. Hugoâs was the aforementioned Marion Brooke, a devotee who shared his revenge obsession (Hugoâs the kind of man who makes women kick off their shoes and men open their chequebooks when he enters a room, Morse once told Lewis). Ludoâs was Violetta (played by Stephanie Leonidas), who started a passionate affair with Morse during his holiday in Venice. In the Series 7 denouement, Ludo says that he picked Violetta from the streets when she was 15 years old and âgave her the world,â forcing her to become his co-conspirator in the life insurance murders and the plan to make Morse his âpet policemanâ.Â
On the subject of having police officers in your pocket, Hugo de Vriesâ association with Morseâs longstanding adversaries the Masons mustnât be forgotten. De Vries taunted Morse with his masonic connections, through Mozartâs freemason-themed opera The Magic Flute. Thereâs no evidence that Ludo Talenti was involved with the freemasons yet, but Endeavour viewers know that theyâre in full operation in Oxford at the time.Â
Endeavour Morse attends âThe Demonâs Wifeâ opera in Venice
Endeavour and Violetta met at a performance of âLa Sposa del Demonioâ in Venice, an operatic work by Endeavour composer Matthew Slater, which translates fittingly as âThe Demonâs Wifeâ. Demons come up a great deal around Talenti and de Vries. âThere speaks a devil sick of sin,â Ludo says to Endeavour. âThere may not be a devil, but thereâs devilry alright, and de VriesâŠâ says Inspector Morse, walking away from Hugoâs burial and doubting whether or not heâs really in the coffin. (De Vriesâ name, cryptic crossword fans canât ignore, shares its first three letters with âdevilâ). And perhaps it just suited his complexion, but Ludo wears deep red numerous times in Series 7, perhaps in echo to de Vriesâ burgundy shirt in his sole appearance.Â
Speaking of that Venetian denouement, did Ludo not die after being shot by Fred Thursday and falling into a canal, putting the kibosh on the âLudo is Hugoâ theory? Well, he was certainly shot, and he certainly did fall into the canal, but did he die, or did that devil live to return and torment Morse under a new name in future adventures? Youâve heard the evidence. Whatâs your verdict?

It wasnât a frigidly cold day for once which meant the walk across campus wasnât horrible in fact it was almost nice except for the fact that it was six-forty five in the morning and Jaehyun was tired. His schedule only allowed for him to take this class as a seven in the morning one otherwise he would never have done it but sadly here he was up bright and early the sky had barely started to shift from the darkness into the light blue of the new day.
Jaehyun rubbed at his eyes before entering his class for todayâs lecture and it was like clockwork as soon as he stepped into the class his phone started to buzz in his pocket. He paused causing the girl walking in behind him to let out an annoyed âHEYâ.
âSorryâŠâ Jaehyun Mumbled stepping to the side to let the girl in while he slipped the phone out of his pocket to see the contact labeled Donât answer that was the work of Yuta, of course, who insisted on blocking Heejinâs number but because of Jaehyunâs stubbornness opted to just change the contact name that used to say Beautiful Heejin.
The phone continued to buzz in his hand as he pushed his other hand through his hair trying to contemplate whether to answer or not. She hadnât even attempted to call him in weeks she cut him off so coldly without any explanation.
âShit,â He sighed before exiting out of the class and into the hall where most of the students awake walked like Zombies but Jaehyun suddenly felt so awake, his heart hammering out of his chest as he clicked the Answer button.
âJ-Jae,â The voice on the other end of the phone, Heejinâs, broke up evidently crying. Jaehyunâs heart broke all over again at the sound of her voice.
âWhat do you want?â Jaehyun keeps his cool answering coldly trying not to attract the attention of people walking.
âI want to talk⊠what you heard wasnât true- I would never hurt youâŠâ She pleads almost sobbing into the phone as Jaehyun lets out a sigh.
âI canât do this anymore Heejin, youâve done nothing but hurt me,â Jaehyun raises his voice ever so slightly to let her know heâs not playing into her trap.
âJaehyun y-you canât be serious? Weâve been together for the past three years and you want to throw away all those happy memories because of one mistake-â her tone is ever so slightly shifting towards a more aggressive one as she becomes increasingly defensive over her actions.
âIt wasnât just once, this is the third time youâve cheated on me, Iâve been trying to make it work with you for years and just when I think weâre in a good place you-â Jaehyun is quickly interrupted.
âSo youâre just going to believe Yuta? You know he hates me and he has no evidence that I cheated, you know why? Because I didnât. You know I would never do that to you, I honestly canât believe you would just assume I cheated when you know I love you,â Heejin defends as Jaehyun pinches the bridge of his nose letting out a sigh.
âI canât do this with you, I believe Yuta because heâs never shown any reason for me to not trust him,â Jaehyun is about to hang up the phone so he can get to his lecture but canât seem to go through with ending the call.
âPlease meet up with me,â Her tone takes a 180 from defensive to weak and fragile.
âI have class and I need time,â Jaehyun explains huffing out a sigh unable to make up his mind.
âOkay⊠I just want you to know that I would run back to you in a heartbeat I just hoped youâd do the same thing after everything weâve been throughâŠâ and with that Jaehyun clicks the red button hanging up pushing his hair back out of his face with his free hand unsure of the conversation he had. He shouldnât have answered in the first place but then again he wanted answers⊠But was it worth it? These are the thoughts going through his head as he enters his lecture distracted.
---
The professorâs voice becomes background noise after sitting down for about half an hour your mind finds interest elsewhere while you continue to take mindless notes youâd have to go over later. You regret signing up for a seven am class when so many people told you not to do it but you, of course, didnât listen thinking it would be fine.Â
The teacher wasnât very expressive which you observed early on as he kept his hands by his side for the most part mainly speaking out, you got more expression from your dog at home than from your teacher but you couldnât do anything. Your mind drifts off to thoughts that donât revolve around the class, they go from fun childhood memories of you and Miyoung when you played out in front of your apartment complex laughing and screaming about how you were the queens of the world, then your mind drifts all the way to the first time you saw Jaemin. His relaxed posture and a breathtaking smile as he talked with his friend Jeno, that smile was enough to make your heart start doing somersaults and your brain to shut off for a moment. His hair was brown at that time and now was a stunning blue color that brought him a lot of attention.
âHey, ____?â The girl next to you taps your shoulder as your thoughts become more focused and you give her a smile, Jennie is a sweet girl but is commonly intimidating to people who donât know her.
âYes?â You whisper back to her smiling as you continue to take notes she bites her lip a little hesitant but speaks anyways.
âI was just wondering how you know Jaehyun, I saw the two of you talking at the Neo house party,â She harmlessly asks and you shrug taking in a sigh.
âOh⊠Ummm I mean I donât really know him that well,â You admit not wanting to tell her âoh you know I donât know him at all and it was a one night standâ.
âReally? You guys looked close so I assumed you knew each other,â She observed and you just silently think.
âYeah, weâre just acquaintances,â You confirm turning back to your notes completely as the teacher continues on monotonously.
âWell, Iâm glad heâs moving on,â The comment made you raise an eyebrow but not delve into it as it wasnât any of your concern but you would be lying if you said you werenât curious. You quickly refocused on the class though and put the conversation out of mind.
---
âNa Jaemin,â The barista working at Jaeminâs favorite small coffee shop, Neo Cafe, announces signaling his order is finished. Jaemin took his time though he was looking around the familiar coffee shop that smelled of fresh coffee and vanilla. There were fake vines hanging on the wall on one side of the shop away from the wide windows that people would occasionally glance through and allowed for some natural light to fill the small cafe. A couple sat in front of the windows smiling and talking quietly it wasnât a busy afternoon which was nice.
âThanks,â Jaemin smiles as he reaches out to grab his coffee from the girl working, she simply nods keeping her eyes trained on the counter looking downwards. So when Jaemin barely has a grip on the cup and she lets go it crashes onto the counter spilling. It gets all over Jaeminâs hoodie and the baristaâs apron. The couple stops talking to look at what just happened a moment ago.
âIâm so sorry!â The girlâs eyes widen as she quickly runs and grabs a towel from the back to wipe up the mess, itâs starting to drip onto the floor on Jaeminâs side. The brown puddle kept growing so Jaemin made an attempt to help by grabbing some paper towels that were on the side and bending down to help.
âYou donât have to do that, itâs my fault the drink is ruined,â The girl tells Jaemin as she furrows her eyebrows angry with herself clearly.
âItâs okayâŠâ Jaemin looks towards the girlâs name tag that hanging on her shirt, itâs a bit askew and also covered in coffee but he can make it out.
â____,â Jaemin smiles as he throws the paper towels into a nearby trashcan while ____ cleans up the counter.
âIâll make you a new one free of charge,â The barista tells him, and before he can say anything sheâs already getting started making his drink.
âYouâre sweet,â Jaemin comments which causes the barista pause for a moment before continuing to make his drink.
âThanks, you know, for not being mad I ruined your drink,â The barista, ____, touches the back of her neck before bringing over his drink this time with two hands.
âYou must really enjoy a strong coffee,â The girl points out because he ordered a coffee with a bunch of espressos shots.
âThis is only my first, you should see me after my sixth,â He smiles and the girlâs eyes go wide again in shock, he thought it was cute that she had a doe in the headlights sort of look as he looks over her face.
âHow are you living?â The girl jokes leaning over the counter while they talk as there were no new customers to attend to.
âI donât know,â Jaemin smiles taking a sip of his coffee while they continue to talk, Jaemin not even bothering to help his coffee-stained hoodie.Â
âSo what were we talking about?â ____ asks after she finishes with a customer and gives them their coffee pushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
âPhotography,â Jaemin smiles as he pulls up his very aesthetic photography Instagram profile to show her, thereâs a lot of scenery pictures but also people ones scattered here and there.
âWow, youâre really talented,â she gapes in awe scrolling through the countless photos.
âItâs al about technique angles and lighting, hey you should come to the photography club one of these days, Iâm the president,â Jaemin smiles proudly.
âSure, but youâll have to show me because I literally know nothing about photography,â She points out handing the phone back to him.
âYeah definitely, let me get your number,â Jaemin smiles handing the phone back over again but she gives him a wink.
âI already put my number in,â Jaeminâs turn to be surprised this time as he raises his eyebrows before tilting his head and scrolling through his contacts and sure enough her number was right there under ____ <3.
âYouâre a step ahead of me,â Jaemin shakes his head before taking his drink and leaving, a big grin plastered on his face. The same grin that made your heart burst.

đ~*~*~*~*~*~*đđ*~*~*~*~*~*~đ
What time was it? It was always hard to tell here.
Looking up from your desk that is currently cluttered with the battlefield of textbooks and papers you were working through, you cast your dry eyes to the window, the gorgeous starry skies doing little to answer the question in your mind. It's always night here. There was no setting sun in the Devildom to lay hints on how long you had been slaving away since returning from R.A.D for the day.
A heavy sigh passed your lips as you turned your head back to the paper you had half-written, full of dark scratches with your frustration laden mistakes. You pluck your D.D.D up from its hiding space, at some point being disregarded and covered with an open book, to look at the clock. However, it didn't illuminate like it usually would once being lifted meaning the battery had died and you hadn't even noticed the music you had quietly playing from the device stopped somewhere along the way.
It didn't really matter what time it was anyway, you had already resigned yourself to your impending all-night cramming session. Two papers were due and the impending midterm test that counted as half your grade on Monday had sealed your fate to have a very sleepless weekend.
Another sigh left you as your rub your palms over tired eyes in a will to make them stop fighting you with this pesky irritating dryness. You needed coffee; always the silent saviour. You pushed yourself out of the chair, your joints popping loudly in the quiet room with the movement. Using your hip to push your chair in you tossed your D.D.D onto your bed, making your way out of your room and quickly to the kitchen. Never before had you been so thankful that your room was only a few steps away from the elixir of life. At least this way you were sure not to wake the other residents in the house of Lamentation through the weekend. You already knew this would be a trip you would be making a lot over the next few days.
A single push of a button had the coffee machine humming to life, echoing through the room in the unusually quiet house - another thing you were thankful for in this moment. The lively atmosphere would normally fill you with warmth, the seven rulers of hell lives were something to witness in the comfort of their dwelling. Sure they fought often, but these walls were filled with so much family love and a millennia of memories you had only begun to scratch the surface of. Tonight you were thankful for the quiet, no disturbances as you fought against the dread of failure with tooth and nail. You really didn't need the bothers yelling to give your brain more reasons than it already had to pulse painfully in your skull.
It was a Friday night and as far as you knew only you and Leviathan were home right now. That being said, it was more like you had the house to yourself due to the otaku being less likely to come out of his room while he was gaming for the night than it was that you would spontaneously combust from the pressure you were putting on yourself. Everyone else had their weekend plans already in full swing.
Of course, none of the brothers would be home studying like you, struggling to understand the topics of demon-ology. They already knew all this stuff... They lived this stuff! Sighing was quickly becoming your only form of vocalization of the night as another passed though your lips to accompany the dull thunk of your spoon hitting ceramic as you stirred your coffee. The thought of another all-nighter weighed heavy on your chest and that has another sigh following.
âOi, what's got you all huffy, huh?!â the unexpected voice startled you from your mind, causing you to jolt and fix the white-haired demon with a wide-eyed gaze.
âMammon, you gave me a damn heart attack!â you managed to squeak out the words as a hand clasped over your chest willing your heart to get back down and out of your throat. The all too familiar grin on his handsome features while he leant against the door frame, did little to convince you he was anything akin to remorseful for causing your soul to temporarily up and leave your body.
âI thought you had a shoot tonight, you skip it?â you questioned him before he had the chance to start teasing you as he normally would. It was always in jest, but you didn't have the energy to throw your own back at him right now.
âSkip?! Its good money doing them shoots ya know! As if I would skip it!â The fake offence in his voice was dripping in the pride he had by earning his own money, honestly. âI finished over an hour ago.â he filled you in while shrugging himself off the door as you approach, continuing to do so as he followed you down the hall. âJust got back, you weren't in ya room so figured Iâd hunt ya down.â The playful lilt in his tone made his intentions clear to you, he was still hyped up and if you let him he would talk your ear off until morning.
Normally you would accept it willingly, even asking him questions about his shoots to continue seeing the proud smile on his face and his laugh ringing through the air of your bedroom. You just didn't have the time right now, so instead, you shoved away the voice in your head telling you that procrastination with your favourite demon would be the best way to spend the night.
âAnd why, pray tell, did you feel the need to find me?â you almost flinched at the harshness of your own voice, quickly placing your coffee down on your table you added in a gentler tone. âIs there something you need? Something wrong?â your hand had already fallen to the back of your chair, ready to pull it out and take your temporary throne, while turning to face him.
You hoped he would read the room and realise you were too busy and leave you be. Dreading the thought of his reaction should you have to ask him to leave. You really did love his company and his self-esteem already got knocked enough by his brothers. Right now, with the prospects of flunking three separate classes hanging in the not too distant future, your nerves were dancing on the edge of a blade. One wrong step and you would be more of a disappointment to the exchange program than you already felt you were.
A flicker of what you read as recognition flashed over Mammons face as his gaze turned from the messy table and his impossibly blue eyes landed on your own. âYeah, there's somethinâ wrong. You are doinâ homework when we planned a movie night, remember?â he flashed you with another blinding grin and all you could do is blink in bewilderment. No, you didn't remember that. In fact, you are pretty sure he just made that up on the spot so he had more of an excuse to claim your time.
âIâm sorry, Mammon.â you started, the dejectedness in you tone was thick in your tone. You chose not to mention his blatant lie, instead just telling him the truth in return. âI don't have time to watch a movie with you tonight, I really have to get this work done.â You give him a soft smile, hoping he doesn't get upset with you as you attempt to pull out your chair only to find Mammonâs own hand near yours holding it in place.
The questioning look you threw him was only answered by a grin that never faulted from his face. âHey, you should be happy the GREAT MAMMON is so willing to spend time with ya! You really gonna throw that away for a night of homework, human? You can be a nerd again tomorrow.â his deep chuckle rumbled from his chest, normally it would force out your own but right now all it did was light a fire of irritation under your skin. You rub your free hand on your face, forcing another sigh back down before it could escape.
âMammon, Please. I really have-â
âAw, Come on! You got all weekend to be doin all this-â he cut you off and you watched in silent horror as he plucked up one of the textbooks, dislodging papers you had carefully paced as markers for the material you needed to study, your gaze following them as they fluttered to the ground near your feet.
â-This ain't even that hard! Why ar-â
âYes it is!â the words snapped out of you, cutting him off this time. Your eyes locking onto his stunned ones. The grip on the chair grew tighter with your irritation, causing your knuckles to turn as white as the demon's hair. Not even his surprise at your uncharacteristic outburst could hold back the stinging string of words that rushed forth now the barrier you had built around your stress broke.
âYou said it yourself right? Many times in fact! I'm just a stupid human!â you took a breath, releasing your grasp on your chair as your arms started to shake with your misplaced anger. Taking to folding them defiantly instead as you stared down the demon in front of you. The rational side of your mind knew those comments were made in nothing but light-hearted jest. But that rational side wasn't present right now. Abandoning you in a moment of frustration leaving those words to sink deep into your chest as your own self worth sunk lower than your struggling grades.
âAnd yet I am meant to understand and memorise the inâs and outâs of multiple different demons anatomy types and over fifty thousand years of devildom history, When up until six months ago I was minding my own damn business before being dropped into a world I always believed to be derived from fiction!â your breath shook as the telling pinpricks behind your eyes burned a warning of the impending flood coming forth.
âYou know all this stuff! This is your world, your home!...â your chest tightened threatening to close your throat as the days of frustratingly trying to absorb so much in such little time yet still coming up short each time despite how hard you try, floored you âI'm just living in it...âSo yes mammon.â your voice cracked and the well in your eyes burst free, sending salty trails cascading down your cheeks. âIt is that hard.â
His eyes never left yours for a second during your usual outburst of emotions, though through your rapidly blurring vision it was impossible to read the expression he held, leaving you to assume it was one of realisation leading to his own anger. You turn your head away, slamming your eyes closed in a futile silent plea for your tears to stop, simultaneously waiting for Mammonâs own anger to lash at you. It was deserved after all.
So you waited, for the rush of energy that sends static through the air when one of the brothersâ emotions get irate, the raised booming voice of anger to return back to you. The moments passed in suffocating silence, only the sound of your shaky breaths reverberated in the room, with each passing second without the whiplash you were waiting for not coming, the ache in your chest grew with your guilt.
Lowering your arms in defeat, you knew you had to apologise, you needed to and yet if Mammon hadn't said anything yet it would probably be the catalyst to your demise. you held your breath, willing yourself to once again open your eyes and look at him. But when you did, what you witnessed wasn't a face twisted with anger or even annoyance. His brows were drawn low, casting dark shadows over his eyes that were filled with nothing but shocked sympathy. You open your mouth to utter⊠anything to break the silence between you both of you.
Before you could force out a single word your world grew dark in the blink of an eye. Strong arms engulfed you, pulling you close to him as slender fingers of one hand threading through your hair holding your head against his broad chest that radiates comforting warmth.
âI'm sorry..â the words you tried to speak were whispered gently, though it wasn't your voice that spoke them. The arm around you back, caging to him grew tighter as a choked sob forced its way from your chests. That was all it took for whatever hold you had left on your emotions to snap and your own arms circled around his waist, gripping the fabric of his shirt as if he was your lifeline.
âIâm sorry for not realizing you were struggling m/c⊠why didn't you tell me?â his voice, far gentler than you felt you deserved was laced with his own hurt. The warm breath tickling the shell of your ear did little to quell the river spilling from your eyes, soaking his shirt as you attempt to muffle your sobs into his chest.
You had no idea how long you both stood there, you clinging to the Avatar of Greed while he muttered gentle words to help calm your fried emotions. Eventually, you fell quiet, a tiredness flooding through you with his warmth making you realise just how much your body ached for this release of everything you had been keeping locked in a metaphorical cage.
You let your hands slacken on his shirt and as you did Mammons grip loosened too, allowing you enough room to take a step back and look up at him. His own eyes were scanning your features and the gentle smile he was giving you was enough to melt away any of your worries. It made your heart flutter, he really did care about you. In this moment nothing was truer.
âYa feelinâ better now M/c?â his tone was just as gentle and you could only nod in response, as soon as you did the grin he gave you as his features relaxed in relief had the tips of your ears burning. Thankful to your breakdown your face was no doubt already flushed so would go unnoticed.
âI'm⊠I'm sorry for shouting at you Mammon. You didn't deserve that.â You dropped your gaze to his chest, a small scoff of a laugh bubbling forth. âI got your shirt all wetâŠâ His bright laugh made you jump slightly, so sudden after the quiet moment. You felt his hands shift from you only to land on your shoulders, causing you to look up again.
âDonât worry about it!â he spoke as he began taking steps towards you, the hold he had on you gently coaxing you to step backwards with him until your legs bumped the edge of your bed. âItâs my job ain't it? I gotta look after ya, or Lucifer would have my head!â He finished with a light downwards push on your shoulders, gently forcing you to sit on the plush mattress behind you. You gave him a questioning look that he answered with a grin and a shrug while letting go of your shoulders âJust the way it is.â That smile proved to be just as contagious as you always thought it was, now paired with the rising rosy hue on his own tanned cheeks drew out your own smile in return.
You let out a quiet laugh of your own, âof course, how could I forget?â throwing him a bigger smile he took a proud stance with his hands on his hips, but before he could respond the dread flooded your mind again and you let out a groan. âIt doesn't change the fact that I'm going to fail⊠then Lucifer will have MY head.â
It didn't help that you already saw yourself as the weak link to the exchange program, the angels were excellent at everything. The only other human, Solomon, was more than accustomed to the ways of the demon world so he was doing just as well as everyone expected him to do. With his magical prowess and unfathomable knowledge, it was no wonder why everyone expected greatness⊠then there's you, struggling to even keep your head above the water that is a passing grade in most of your classes.
Shifting yourself to stand once more, you had to work. Mammon halts your movements by placing his hands back on your shoulders. âOi! Stop being so stubborn.â you open your mouth to retort but he just lifts a finger in front of your face silencing you. âWe are watchinâ a movie and you are gonna deal with it!â he huffs with finality leaving you to groan.
As if reading your mind Mammon sat himself down next to you, his voice taking the gentler tone again. âI⊠I'll help ya study tomorrow, a-alright?â not meeting your eyes you saw the hue rising on his face once more as he shuffles himself back on the bed to lean his back on the wall while plucking up the remote that laid on your pillow to turn on the T.V. âIâll even get Satan to help if it will stop you stressinâ so much.â
The sound of the TSL theme song filled the room as you stared at the blushing demon sat on your bed. It was obvious he cared about you even if he didn't want to admit it out loud. That thought alone had a soft warmth spreading through your body. Letting out your final sigh of the night you admitted defeat, scooting yourself back to claim the space next to him.
âThank you, Mammon. You're the best,â you spoke quietly while leaning your head down onto his shoulder. You felt him physically stiffen next to you. Just because he had hugged you didn't mean you could get all cosy with him now. Not wanting to make him uncomfortable you moved to sit back up properly, however, the arm you were just resting on flew out to circle around your back and gripping your upper arm pulling you back towards him, forcing a sharp breath of surprise out of you as your face landed on his chest.
You were about to question him, tell him he didn't need to hold you anymore but he spoke first. âDamn right I'm the best! Don't you go forgetting it again, human!â despite his bold declaration you could hear the underlying shyness in his voice. You bite your lip to stop your giggle; you simply grin snuggling further into his side. It didn't take long for your eyes to grow heavy.
The sound of Mammon's rhythmic heartbeat was drawing you in like the most perfect lullaby, melting away the stress that had been building for weeks. In this moment, everything was perfectly calm, you felt safe and knew you weren't alone in this hectic adventure in the land of demons. Unable and unwilling to fight the sleep washing over you, your eyes fluttered closed as you lay in the arms of the demon you were undeniably in love with.
As the tendrils of slumber overtook your senses you heard his soothing voice reaching you before your world fell into a restful dreamless sleep.
âYou are perfect...Good night, my human.â

Summary:Â Hoseok desperately wants to continue your guyâs friendship despite his girlfriend Soo-min hating you. What he doesnât know though is that even just being friends will kill you.
A/N: After much consideration what started off as a one-shot then two-shot, shall now have three parts. Thank you everyone for your patience. I appreciate all the support given to me.
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
White orchids spill from your mouth as you heave into the toilet only to miss. A minute passes before you collapse onto the cold tile floor of your restroom. Your eyes stare blankly at the white mocking flowers splattered with blood. How fitting for the product of your disease to be such a rare exotic flower. Most people who suffered from Hanahaki threw up roses or lilies, but you got orchids. It is as life wants to personally point out that your first and only time falling in love with someone is doomed.
Forcing the remnants of blood and flowers back into your throat, you stood up on shaky legs. It was 9:10 am last time you checked, and time you spent throwing up has fucked up your morning schedule. If you donât change soon youâd undoubtedly be late to your morning class. âCome on (Y/N), you can do it. No stupid flowers are going to-â
â(Y/N)! Are you ready?â a familiar jovial voice calls out, causing only more flowers to fall from your lips.Â
Quickly you slam the door to the restroom shut, locking it for extra measure. Your mind races trying to figure out why the object of your affection Jung Hoseok was here. Sure he used to walk you to class every morning, but only to make his ex-girlfriend Soo-min jealous. Soo-min hated you with a passion. Which is why when Hoseok and her broke up, he thought fake dating you would be the best way to get her back-and it worked.Â
For three months you faked a relationship with Seoul Universityâs âsunshine boyâ. At first you felt awkward not being a people person and Hoseok was under the impression that you were some sort of monster. Eventually though you two passed those hurdles. Hoseok broke through your icy barriers, he became your first friend and through him you began to make other friends. Everything went perfectly except for the fact you began to fall for him.Â
It started slow, but you could feel the symptoms progressing each day. His love began thawing the ice around your heart. Then a seed planted itself in it sprouting leaves that grew like ivy. Soon after flowers escaped your mouth the sure sign of an unrequited love. Your love for him was real. Probably more real than anything Soo-min could give him. However Hoseok felt oppositely hence the Hanaki disease.Â
â(Y/N)? Are you in there? â Hoseok knocks. âItâs kind of late to be getting ready. Did you oversleep?â
âYeah.â You croak. âI just got up. What âŠwhat are you doing here, Hoseok? Didnât you and Soo-min get back together?â
Itâs a question you already know the answer to, but you canât help not to ask. You need to know for sure, before you make any decisions regarding your Hanahaki, you need to Hoseok got his wish. ââŠ.we did, but that doesnât we canât still be friends-â
His answer both hurts and relieves you at the same time. Â
âIt means exactly that, Sunshine boy. You canât be friends with me. You canât even talk to me unless you want Soo-min to hate you.â You say, hardening your heart.
Hoseok isnât the type to abandon a friend for girl. Not even if heâs only known them for a few months. Which is why you need to be the bad guy hereâŠfor both your sakes. â(Y/N)âŠâ Hoseok says.
Taking a deep breath you opened the door coming face to face with the cherry haired boy you loved. His dark eyes gaze at you sadness radiating through them. You have a feeling he knows how right you are, even if he doesnât want to admit it. âWe canât. Being friends with you will only cause pain and trouble for us. Trust me.â you reaffirm.
Hoseok shakes his head. âI donât believe that. Not for one second. You are my friend whether Soo-min or anyone else wants you to be or not.â
A vine shoots out at his words coiling tightly around your rib. It takes everything within you not to double over in pain as it bruises muscle and bone. You are so far gone, any sort of relationship with Hoseok will kill you. âWhat about what I want? What if I donât want to be friends anymore? What if I am tired of dealing with you and everyone else?â You snap uncontrollably. âI donât want to do it, Hoseok. I donât want to be your friend anymore. Alright?! â
Hoseok doubles back a crushed look on his face. âAlright. If thatâs what you want, Iâll leave you alone then.â
âIt is.â You say looking away . You canât handle the expression on his face. It hurts more than anything the Hanahaki does to you. A ray of sunshine like him should never be anything less than shining, especially not at the expense of an ice queen like you.Â
Later that night you receive a visit from Yoongi, Hoseokâs best friend/fraternity brother and the only other person who knows about your disease. The blonde haired boy arrives with an assortment of medicines, books, and pamphlets revolving around Hanahaki. Itâs a sight that makes you both laugh and cry at the same time. âI heard you broke up with Hobi.â Yoongi says as he enters your dorm.
You snort, shaking your head. âWe werenât really dating to begin with, so how can we break up?â
âHe looks awful. Almost as if you murdered his whole family in front of him.â Yoongi mentions. âSeriously Iâve never seen him so upset. Not even when Soo-min broke up with him.â
You look down ashamed. âI didnât want to hurt him, but I-â
âYou had to.â Yoongi finishes knowingly. Itâs only been a few days since you revealed to him your secret, but already Yoongi could see the damage done to you by this disease. You are paler than normal, skinnier too with dark circles under your eyes. Your lips are chapped and your hair lost whatever shine used to be there. Overall you look like shit and Yoongi feels so fucking guilty for not noticing sooner.Â
âHeâll kill me.â You whisper sadly. âJust by being around me, this plant will grow and strangle me to death. Itâs not fair-especially for Hoseok, who didnât even ask for my affection. So I have to stay away for both our sake.â
It sucks, but you donât doubt sunshine boy will bounce back. Youâre merely another side note in his novel of a life after all. âHave you decided what to do yet?â Yoongi asks, looking over the pamphlets. âThey have tablets that are supposed to reduce hanahaki growth, but they arenât a permanent solution.â
âThere are only two solutions to hanahaki disease: death and surgery.â Tears well up at the thought. Neither option is preferably, especially since you know first hand the consequences behind them.
âI hope you arenât seriously thinking about death. I mean I get that you love Hobi, but itâs only a feeling. Itâs not worth your life.â Yoongi says, his dark eyes pinning you with a look. âBesides itâs not like you two canât be friends afterwards.âÂ
Your lips curl into a bitter smile at his words. Memories of a vacant stare and careless question of âwho are you?â flash before your eyes. Yoongiâs naivety is not his fault. The horrors behind hanahaki surgery are such that even doctors belittle its effects. After all who wants to hear that the person they loved will be forever erased from their memories?
And like that night three days ago you confide in Yoongi about your horrible truth. âHey YoongiâŠhave you seen someone go through hanahaki surgery?â
Three hours later Yoongi stumbles home wanting to throw up. Your words play like a never ending loop in his head gripping tightly to his heart. âMy parents suffered through Hanahaki disease when I was little. My mother died from it and my father forgot everything.â
His knees buckle as he steps inside the frat house. For once it is silent. No one up playing video games in the living room, no loud music blasting, or groups of people conversing simply silence, something Yoongi canât tell if heâs grateful for or not. On one hand he could use the distraction-the noise to blare out your tearful story, whereas on the other hand Yoongiâs glad no one is around to see him like this.Â
âFuck.â he whispers to no one. âFuck. Fuck..Fuuuuccck.â
Heâs haunted by the calm expression on your face as you whispered. âEveryone thought my parents had a happy marriage. After all, my father loved my mother and she always smiled but I guess not all smiles equal happinessâŠmy mother loved someone else. Who? No one knows. She never gave any indication of fancy someone other than my father. No one knew until I found her propped up against the toilet, roses sprouting from her lips like some macabre painting.â
Seven. Seven fucking years old when you found your mother dead, yet you spoke as if she simply gotten a cold. If he didnât know any better Yoongi wouldâve thought you to be soulless. However the orchids clamouring out of your own body only proves how much of a heart you did have. âHey, man is everything alright?â Hoseokâs voice comes, as he steps into view.
Heâs dressed in his normal sleepwear, a white t-shirt and boxers cladded in cartoon birds. His hair is disheveled which normally meant he was sleeping, if not for the purple bruises decorating his neck. Anger flashes through Yoongi at the sight. Soo-min must be over, that fucking bitch. âFine. Sorry for waking you up.âÂ
âI wasnât really sleeping.â Hoseok shrugs.
âIâve noticed.â Yoongi says dryly. Logically the blonde knows it unfair to be mad at his friend. It isnât Hobiâs fault you fell in love with him. Nor his fault that he loved Soo-minâŠbut Yoongi canât help himself-especially since Soo-min replaced you. (You mightâve gotten over her bullying you, but Yoongi hadnât.)
âAh yeah, Soo-min got a little wild. Sheâs never been this possessive before.â Hoseok laughed. âIf making her jealous is all I got to do for sex like that, Iâll have to do it more often.â
Yoongi didnât even bother faking a smile. Hoseok already knew how much he and the rest of the guys hated Soo-min. âWhatever you say, just keep it down okay? I have a math test tomorrow.â
Hoseok nods. âOf course. Sleep tight Yoongs! Donât let the bedbugs bite.â
âThatâs the stupidest shit Iâve ever heard.â Yoongi grumbles, walking away. Hoseokâs laugh echoes down the hall as Yoongi heads to his room. It is not until he falls back onto his soft bed that Yoongi allows the final tidbit of your confession to play.
âForget. Thatâs what the surgery makes you do. It doesnât only erase emotions of love, it erases all memories pertaining to it as well. When my father returned from his surgery the first thing he said to me was, âwhoâs kid is this?â
Forget or die, two shitty options for someone who already had it shitty. Yoongi closes his eyes thumbing the pair of keys belonging to a certain roommate of his. Slowly he slips the key covered in mickey mouse prints off. There isnât much he can do to help you make your decision, but perhaps Yoongi can make life a little easier for you.Â
A week passes from that day and Hoseok canât ignore the gnawing feeling that something is wrong. He knows your guyâs friendship has ended, but the cherry haired boy canât keep his distance. Not when every cell in his body screams for him to fix this somehow.Â
After three months of fake dating you somehow became a permanent fixture in his life. He misses teasing you about your bad breakfast choices, or forcing you to eat an actual meal instead of coffee for lunch. He misses the way you listened to him, barely muttering more than âuh huh, ok, yeahâ; it always seemed like you werenât listening until you surprised him with a question or comment.Â
   Hoseok just misses you period.
Which is why he decided to give your friendship one more shot. Surely if he misses you this much you feel the same. Memories of your callous words from a week ago come to mind tormenting his fear, suddenly Hoseok feels like he canât breathe. You said he annoyed you, that you were tired of him, but that was just because you were scared of losing him to Soo-min? Once you see how genuine he is, you two will go back to being friends.Â
"I donât want your stupid apple. Iâve already eaten. â Hoseok perks up at the sound of your voice. Heâs been sitting on the steps of the language building for the past half hour waiting for you. Your name dances on the tip of his tongue. Eagerly he opens his mouth to call out to you but freezes at the sight of a familiar blonde walking beside you.Â
"A gogurt and a cup of coffee doesnât count as lunch, dumb ass. Now eat the apple, itâll help you from getting sick. â Yoongi says, shoving the red fruit into your hands. Â
Something within Hoseok twists, he finds himself nearly doubling over in pain. A dark ember burns in his stomach, suddenly Hoseok wants nothing more than to punch Yoongi. "She hates apples. â Hoseok canât help but inform. âItâs her least favorite fruit. â
Both you and Yoongi jerk surprised by his presence. As if on instinct Yoongi steps forward blocking your view from him, it causes Hoseokâs blood to boil more. âHey Hobi, waiting for Soo-min?â Yoongi asks nonchalantly.Â
Hoseok bit his cheek suddenly remembering Soo-min has a class right before yours. The two of you share the same major meaning your schedules often coincided. He walked you to class everyday just to show off your ârelationship."Â
       "Something like that."Â
"Cool. See you at home I guess.â Yoongi nods, pulling you with him towards the door. You barely even glance up at Hoseok as youâre led away.Â
Again something twists violently in the pit of his stomach and the question, 'are you guys together,â slips through his teeth before Hoseok can stop. The two of you freeze, Yoongiâs fingers tightening around your wrist. Suddenly Hoseok doesnât want to know the answer.
"Something like that. â Yoongi replies, dragging you into the building.Â
Three weeks go by since your 'break upâ with Hobi, and ironically, you find yourself in another fake relationship this time with Yoongi. Unlike your previous pseudo-relationship this one contains nothing more platonic love. There are no fake dates or pet names. Yoongi doesnât treat you like some girl heâs in love with. Instead he forces broth and anti-growth pills down your throat only to hold your hair back when white petals flow back up from it. He shields you from Hoseok, Soo-min and the judgemental glances of the world, protecting you from harm. No, Min Yoongi is a god send, but you arenât in love with him.Â
Sometimes you wish you were though. Loving Yoongi sounds easier than loving Hoseok, but that could simply be wishful thinking. After all, Yoongi and Hoseok are two different elements. Hoseok is the warm sun melting away all your defenses, while Yooongi is a winterâs breeze offering relief from the sunâs rays while fortifying your protection. "So the date has been set. A week from now Iâll have the surgery and this will all be over. â you announce, ignoring the painful ache in your chestÂ
The idea of forgetting Hoseok scares you. You donât want to forget him or the way heâs made you feel. As selfish as it sounds Hoseok is the first person to show you affection in years. Your family basically ostracized you after they discovered your fatherâs amnesia. While he could learn to love you again the possibility of him remembering your mother ran too high. So instead you lived as his niece with an aunt and uncle who despised you, because you looked like your mother.Â
Yoongi nods, glancing over at the calendar. He canât help but frown at the date circled in red. âI know this is the only viable solution, but I feel like I should ask you if this is what you really want?â
"No, but I donât want to die either.â You say softly. "As much as I want to hold onto these feelings of love, they donât really belong to me, you know? Hoseok loves Soo-min. Theyâre her feelings not mine. â
Yoongiâs frowns. âSoo-min only loves herself. You know it, I know it, and deep down Hobi does too.â
"Maybe but it doesnât change a thing.â You murmur, eyeing the date. Your grip tightens around the mug you hold. You donât want to admit but youâre scared; scared of waking up the exact person you were before Hoseok: cold, intruding and alone.Â
Yoongi shoots a knowing glance. "Something else bugs you, doesnât it? â
You take a sip of your tea. â Donât worry. Itâs stupid stuff. "Â
Itâs three days before your surgery that you see Hoseok for the first time in a month. Logically you know you should avoid him even if the appointment is less than forty-eight hours away. However you find yourself staying at the coffee shop, eyes unlocking from the cherry haired boy. 'Just one more glance.â You assure yourself. 'Something to carry with me onto the operating table thatâs all I want. â
But itâs more than one glance itâs several long stares, watching as the boy talks animatedly amongst his friends. He looks so happy right now practically glows like the sun. The sight is so beautiful it causes your heart to bear faster. This is what you wanted to see. Hoseok happy and carefree even if it is without you.Â
You smile, ignoring the painful pulse your heart gives when the Hanahakiâs vine squeezes around it. This is how things are meant to be. Hoseok deserves a life filled with equally bright people. He deserves happiness in every form. You arenât.
A content sigh escapes you. You swore to Yoongi, you accepted the surgery with no regrets, but that was all a lie. Seeing Hoseok like this though, so free and unaffected by your absence, you can finally let go of the little doubt holding you back.Â
"Order for (Y/N)!â The barista calls out sliding your drink across the counter.Â
You cringe at how loud they are; internally hoping that Hoseok hadnât heard your name. Seeing him from afar is dangerous enough, if you actually interacted with him⊠ You push the thought out of your head, quickly exiting the cafe, completely unaware of the eyes following you.Â
"You okay man? Youâve been staring at the barista an awful lot. âÂ
Hoseok blinks, tearing his gaze away from where you stood. The moment you walked into the cafe Hoseok could only focus on you. It is like everything else disappeared except for you.  "Yeah Iâm fine. "Â
"You sure? Because if you like the dude that much, I can get you his number. â Another, Jo Kwon teases. âThough I think Soo-min would kill both of us- wait! Isnât that (Y/N) up there? Didnât you two used to date before you and Soo-min got back together?â
Hoseok nods barely listening. His focus once again on you, this time watching you leave. Neither Dino or Jo Kwon knew about the dumb deal or how sweet Seoul Universityâs Ice Queen really was. While they are good friends, they were nowhere near close enough for Hoseok to feel comfortable sharing his secret.Â
"Gotta say you mustâve been really off your rocker, Hoseok. Dating such a scary girl. â Dino snorts.Â
"Seriously, I heard (Y/N) got arrested for murdering her parents, but since she was a kid no one believed she did it.â Jo Kwon says. âYou know someone should warn Yoongi-hyungnim about her. Theyâre together now arenât they?â
"Something like thatâŠ" Hoseok mutters. His chest burns at the mention of Yoongi and you. While you refuse to even look his way, you have no qualms hanging on Yoongiâs every word and move. It is like Yoongiâs the sun and youâre the earth orbiting around him- it pisses Hoseok to no end and he canât explain why.Â
"Maybe he just figured sheâs an easy lay. I mean a girl like her is probably desperate for attention. Sheâs probably spreading her legs for anyone who looks at her-â Hoseokâs fist hits Dinoâs face before either one can process what is happening.
The younger boy falls to the ground with a loud crash, causing everyone to stare at them. "What the fuck man!? You just hit me. â Dino sputters wide eyed.Â
"And Iâll do it again if I ever hear either of you talk about (Y/N) like that again.â Hoseok threatens. The anger within him is uncontrollable. He canât explain it. Especially when it is not only Dino and Jo Kwon who pisses him off, but Yoongi too. Just the mere sight of the blonde sickened him nowadays.Â
"Youâre crazy man. Sheâs a freak and she made you one too!â Jo Kwon says.
Luckily, all it takes is a warning look to have them scrambling out of the coffee shop. âAssholes.â Hoseok mutters, ignoring the still plentiful stares at him. He reaches for his coffee only to pause when his stomach turns suddenly. Annoyed Hoseok pushes the cup away. He must be getting sick.
Word of the fight spreads across the campus like wildfire. Fury does not explain the anger Soo-min feels when she hears about her boyfriendâs outburst. In all the years she dated Hoseok never once did he get offended for her sake. Boys literally listed off her body count at parties and Hoseok merely shrugged asking Soo-min. 'why does it matter when everyone knows youâre mine?â
Mine. The claim used to send shivers down Soo-minâs spine. Yes, she was his. Just like how she owned him. They were meant to be no matter how many times they broke up. It didnât matter if Soo-min decided to date around a little, because Hoseok would wait for her. Â
At least so she thought until one day Hoseok ended up on the arm of her biggest enemy. Originally Soo-min assumed he simply wanted her jealous- a clever ploy really, after all wherever she went you two appeared. Three weeks later though, you started wearing Hoseokâs hoodies. After that Beta-Tau-Sigma invited you to their house, a privilege which took Soo-min months to achieve, but the real straw to the camelâs back happened when Hoseok threatened her.Â
The cherry haired boy who cared little about gossip finally spoke out against it and not for her sake. In that moment Soo-min realized the relationship between Hoseok and you ran deeper than she assumed. For the first time in her life, Soo-min felt threatened in Hoseokâs and her relationship. So she ended it.
With a bat of the eyelashes and the purse of her lips, Soo-min took back what was hers. Once again Hoseok and her were together while you cried your ugly heart out. Everything went back to normal. Except it didnât.Â
Hoseok refused to leave you alone. He was determined to have some sort of relationship with you, despite now being with her. Not even you dating his own best friend stopped Hoseokâs unsettling obsession with you.Â
"I donât expect you to understand, but (Y/N) is someone special to me. I canât just let her go. â he told her one night.Â
He was right. Soo-min didnât understand. Nor did she want to. What Soo-min wants is you gone. â(Y/N) (L/N), you fucking slut! Stay away from my boyfriend!â She hollers, charging after you.Â
You stare at her confused. The sight spurs her rage more so. How dare you act clueless! As if you donât know what you are doing? She pushes past the throng of students cornering you against a tree. Itâs just her no posse unlike last time. Not that Soo-min needs one to kick your ass.
Since elementary school, she has worked to put you in your place. The only difference now is the strange attachment Min Yoongi has towards you. Last time he stopped her from teaching you a well deserved lesson. Today however he wonât be able to save you. âIâm not in the mood Soo-min. â you mutter, walking around her.Â
She grabs onto your hair yanking it. A small gasp escapes you as you tumble onto the ground. âWell I am. So you are going to listen to me and listen real good you got it?â
       "Fucking psycho. â you spit.
Her hands twist, tightening the pull on your hair. You reach up trying to pull away, but Soo-minâs stronger. "Me? Psycho? No no youâre the heartless ice queen here. You mightâve tricked Hoseok and everyone else into thinking youâre some innocent little girl, but you and I know the truth. You are unlovable.â
You let out a loud laugh surprising her. âAgain with that hanahaki shit? You and our family have been holding that over my head for fifteen years. My fatherâs disease wasnât my fault. Nor was it my motherâs. â
Taking Soo-min off guard, your right leg sweeps back, knocking her off balance. She loses grip on your hair allowing you to push back. You stand towering over her. âLove is an uncontrollable force. You canât choose who you love. Just like you canât choose who loves you back.â
Soo-min snorts. âWhat do you know about love? Your mother chose to love over her daughter, and your father chose life over you too. Meanwhile Hoseok only used you to get me back. He never loved you and he never will-â
A small cough breaks through her rant. One tiny hiccup like cough that normally would go overlooked if not for a single orchid petal escaping your lips. She freezes eyes locked on the white petal.Â
"YouâŠâ She hardly managed to say the word when you turn tails running.Â
Her body moves on its own chasing after you. She doesnât want to admit it. Doesnât want to acknowledge it but Soo-minâs scared. As much as she hates you, you are still her cousin. It doesnât take long for her to catch up to you. Out of the two of you, sheâs always been the more athletic one. Moreover thanks to the disease, you hardly make it a few feet before heaving a basket of flowers up.Â
Soo-min stares at the blood soaked plants in horror. Full stems. You are throwing up whole plants. "You are dying. â
The words come out more blatantly then she intends, but you snort nonetheless. âYeah, I am. Donât celebrate yet though. Iâm getting the surgery.â
"You. You are in love.â She continues speechless. 'But how? I mean who? Is it Hoseok?â
"Yoongi.â You correct quickly. "Iâm in love with Yoongi. He ah he doesnât love me though. He loves someone else so we broke up.â
"Oh.â Her throat tightens around the word. For the first time ever Soo-min does not know how to react. Deep inside she wants to reach out, comfort you, scream at Min Yoongi until sheâs blue however she canât. Not only does Soo-min know you wonât accept it, but thereâs still something within that holds onto her parentsâ prejudiceÂ
     "Does he know?â Soo-min asks.Â
You shake your head. âNo. Nor does he need to. In two days this will all be a forgotten memory.âÂ
Soo-min frowns. Her heart squeezes pain at the thought. Itâs funny sheâs always wanted to see you suffer, but not like this. Despite being little during your parentsâ illness Soo-min remembers clearly everything that happened. From the hole your mother cut through you and your fatherâs heart to her uncleâs empty expression after the surgery. More than anything she remembers her warm fun loving cousin falling into herself. The person who was once her best friend suddenly distanced herself from everyone including Soo-min.
It is a memory that stirs up something within Soo-min, she hasnât felt in a long timeâŠ: guilt.

What to do after death; Vampirism
Preface -
I feel the name says it all.
But, I will elaborate anyhow.
I donât intend on becoming a Vampire, at all. Itâs a raw deal and one-way passage into a hell of my own making.
I suspect should I actively pursue becoming a Vampire I will lose my soul to damnation. Vampireâs are often the results of the foulest of magic and consorting with satanic entities with depraved offerings or just as often the results of those black souled individuals who find happiness in the torment of others. If I am not planning on becoming a Vampire, why I am I making this list?
Easy, it pays to be prepared. Just because I donât seek undeath doesnât protect me from being turned against my will. I am of the belief, once you have become a Vampire against your will you die and lose your soul, leaving a husk behind. A husk that has all your memories, personality, and desires, but none of the restraint, humanity or compassion. A sociopath with supernatural powers and a need for life essence of others to maintain my own parasitic existence.
I am making the list to give myself direction after death so as to prevent as much suffering as I can, and if possible, try and help humanity grow.
I can only hope my husk listens to my will.
My family is well armed otherwise, they will do what must be done, as I would do for them.
-----------
The List
-----------
Step One - Leave home, letâs not take any chances hurting my loved ones, or former loved ones, I owe them that much.
a) Construct a note though, tell them all how much they meant to me and why I am leaving, be through and leave nothing out, but donât tell them where I am headed. Leave the code-word I have with our elder brother so he understands and tell him heâs free to what I leave behind.
b) Make a pack, get one of our knives in there and get a gun. Get some blankets so I can cover-up during the day, actually many blankets and some stones so that theyâll be weighted down. This is a temporary solution however.
c) Empty my bank account as much as possible. Cash and coin will be more beneficial if Iâm going off the grid.
d) Leave town.
Step Two - Head north and head to a bigger city
a) Buy a sleeping bag and tent at the closest opportunity.
b) Keep an ear to the ground, find out who can go missing and people would be thankful that their gone. Pick my targets carefully, never more than one person at a time and always when their not expecting it, Iâm a predator I should act like it. I might have supernatural powers, but I canât be prepared for everything and people will know my weakness if I get found out.
c) Aim for the scum of the earth, get rid of them, but not until I have conclusive evidence. But, when I do have it, itâs feeding time, make sure to take their valuables, will need it for future plans.
d) Do that for about a month and move on, canât stay anywhere for too long. But, before we leave buy a couple books on architecture, vampires, morals and ethics, stone-working, physics, building ect. Weâre going to need it.
e) Find out if I can sustain our-self off animal blood.
Step Three - Rinse and Repeat. Go from city to city in our state till Iâve cleaned out what I can. Hopefully Iâll have a duffel-bag of money and valuables, along with those books.
a) Study those books. Find out what kind of vampire I am, make sure I learn about building castles.
b) Take some time to practice building.
c) Practice hunting; Hunt some animals to drink their blood if that helps, practice skinning and chopping up the parts. Donate the meat if I can, or leave at a poor home, they probably wonât be able to afford throwing it away.
d) Learn about interior decoration.
e) Get some better guns, drop off the gun we borrowed from our family along with a chunk of changes, leave them another note that weâre doing fine.
Step Four - Time to move. By the time Iâve hit this step I should have hit all the large towns, which depending weâre counting above or below ten thousand as a big town could take us from anywhere three years to around four if I cut off at nine thousand in population for a big town. Itâs hard to say how much money Iâll have at this point, but It must be at least ten thousand dollars at a minimum if Iâve spent all my time eating, murdering, and robbing scum of the earth at least once a month for three to four years.
a) Head north. I need to get to Detroit. That place is so crime ridden no will notice a vampire. If there already vampires there leave, go find another crime-ridden hell-hole. I assume vampires get stronger, or at least craftier with age, I am not fucking with any old monsters.
b) On the way there repeat the Step three on any big cities on the way there, cover my tracks.
c) Make sure to pawn off what I can. Invest in urban camo and a bullet-resistant vest.
d) Keep practicing stone masonry, and improve my gun skills. I donât need to chase anyone down if they can run, plus I can suck the blood from the wounds, itâll be like a water fountain.
e) Read that book on physics and other science books, I am playing the long game, look into magic too. Nothing is better than magic or science than knowing the rules to both. Donât fuck with demonâs though.
Step Five - Settle down for a while and then move again, once I get to my crime-ridden hellhole of my choice take some time to start eliminating the seedy elements. If not, start going for the low hanging fruit, I canât help everybody, but I can help somebody.
a) Find some random kid and become their guardian, a great way to kill time probably.
ai.) By guardian, I donât mean parent, Iâm talking more guardian spirit. A vampire rasing a child is a recipe for disaster.
aii.) Donât get too attached though, after their in a good place leave. Iâm not    doing it for good, Iâm doing it to maintain a little humanity.
b) By now I should have enough to fund a new identity and since I now live in a corrupt hell-hole it should be easy to enter the system. If I donât have enough money, then attain it. Donât try and intimidate anybody just yet me, I donât have enough influence yet and itâll just end up screwing me over.
c) Buy an actually house, fake a life for about ten years, then move to another corrupt hell-hole. Start saving valuable, no, start a war found, weâre going to need it.
Step Six - Start prepping for the End. Humanity has conflict in itâs blood, itâs only a matter of time before we go nuclear. Use the funds we have to buy some land in the mountains. Use the stone masonry skills and architect skills Iâve attained over the last several decades to build a fortified castle with space age materials.
a) Create a underground vault for my mortals.
b) Install anti-air defenses, install ground defences, booby-trap my land.
c) Creating a sustainable area for farming if possible, if not work on making sustainable green houses.
d) Start preserving all of human history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Movies, games, books, porn, all of it. It needs to be preserves. Put it all in the vault. Record all the science, by hand if neccasary.
e) Start stealing relics so that they can be preserved by me. I am definitely going Trazyn the Infinite.
f) Start recruiting people for my cause, screen each and every one.
g) Put my room at the top of the mountain with as long stair case as possible, If these fuckers want to kill me while I sleep I want them to have leg cramps while they do it. Also put booby trap my coffin room.
Step Seven - Rebuilding Society or keep playing the waiting game. If the world has torn itself apart, I will then do what I feel is the best choice. Create bio-augmented techno-knights, or not.Â
a) Hopefully decades of research on physics, matter, and engineering will allow me to create powered armor knights, but if not, just keep researching.
b) Make a secret castle deeper into the mountains no one else can reach without significant resources, or supernatural abilities. Start moving my lab, my vault, my copies of human history and media, plus my stored blood there.
c) When I finally succeed leave my first castle to my servants and teach them what I have to offer, leave them the blue prints for becoming techno-knights and leave. I no longer have a place among men or their future, I will merely safeguard the past and record it.
d) Go to my new castle and spend eternity studies reality and building more castles.
-------
Afterword: The probability of me becoming a vampire is close to zero, and the idea of my soul-less husk following is these steps is even less, but should it work it will have been worth it.

mahiru shit the fuck off challenge
In Which I Bitch About Mahiru (kind of goes along with the takaya kagami what the fuck post and is about the same chapter but itâs just about her word choice)
Ok so also this is about the prologue of catastrophe book 5, in which Mahiru decides she needs to foreshadow major life events that will happen to Yu in eight years and thinks itâs funny that his life is a tragedy when heâs still seven and crying about his parents
Mahiru walks into the thousand nights place and goes âI want to see your seraph boysâ and theyâre like âwe hate you but ok, the one you can take away is at the orphanage so IDK why youâre even hereâ and sheâs like âI just want to monologue about my relationship problems to a 7 year oldâ and theyâre like âfair but weâll erase his memories bc we know youâre gonna foreshadow thingsâ and sheâs like âyes but I know heâll remember because Iâm so Special Iâm going to make an impression on him foreverâ which like sheâs kind of right, considering the recent chapters but it doesnât mean I donât still hate that
Like I hate that Mahiru makes valid points to Yu for all the wrong reasons. Literally all the wrong reasons like sheâs all âyeah you should still live even if youâre a monster because you will need to protect people you loveâ which is something Yu still believes and basically makes up a LOT of his morals, but what Mahiru is taking that from is âI can kill as many people as I want because I want Guren to love meâ
Also the fact that Yu is all like âIâm a demonâ and Mahiru thinks itâs hilarious to say âyou look human to meâ when we know that he is literally the farthest thing from human??
Alkfdjslakdsjfla;sdjllds but thEN Mahiru feels the need to say like âoh, so many people are trying to kill me, there must be a rule among humans that the ones who donât fit in have to dIEâ which just literally translates to âPeople are trying to kill me because iâm Not Like Other Girlsâ Mahiru stop, sheâs saying that because sheâs trying to get a point across that you shouldnât die just because other people want you to but youâre really not the best example of that Mahiru
The funniest thing is that Mahiru thinks that sheâs somehow taught him a Great Life Lesson because she said she wasnât like other girls Iâm gonna commit toaster bath jfklsa;fdsjkla and thEN she has the A U D A C I T Y to say
âThe question I asked him will stay in there, somewhere. Because it addresses the core of personhood. When the world tells you to lie down and die, should you? Heâll find an answer to that question, someday. And I have a sneaking suspicion that when he does, it will be in front of a certain someone I once loved...â
Um??? MAHIRU??? If you?? If you are fucking talking about what I think youâre talking about that is suddenly applicable and wasnât when this book came out then I think Iâm gonna need to take some Measures??? Why would Mahiru already know this? She literally has everything planned out to the MINUTE for what happens in the manga? Jesus christ Mahiru
I think this could honestly apply to,,, a lot of things. It could apply to back in the anime when Yu literally dies to save Guren and just straight up decides heâs gonna Not Die because he can do that I guess??
But it could also apply to... well. Chapter 90. What might happen in coming chapters with Yu and Guren applying to,,, all that stuff. It could also apply to the part where Mahiru is like âYu do you remember me telling you all thatâ and Yuâs like âuh yeah my reason for living is Mika peace outâ and MAHIRU YOU B I T C H I swear to GOD if she PLANNED THAT OUT
djsakld;fslaskjf so then I think the thousand nights guys are getting fed up with her too and theyâre like âhere are our spicy apocalypse beasts we made them we control them and if we wanted to we could tell them to r*pe you Right Nowâ and Mahiruâs reaction to that is basically just âcoolâ
hhhhhhhhhhh not to mention when she says âyes i am a demon,,, a dEmon who Yearns for L o v eâ and then a page later goes âyknow I donât think I actually have a heartâ Mahiru literally make up your mind
And t h e n it gets even BETTER when itâs like, Yu is so touch starved and broken that heâd rather have this teenager bitching about her relationship issues than no one so heâs like âyouâre leaving??â and sheâs like...
âI am... I have my own battle to fight, so youâll have to stay strong on your own. You do that, and someday Iâll come back to let you out of here.â
Oh. Mahiru. You did not just say that. She promises that when she knows that everything sheâs saying is so fake, that sheâs using him, that sheâs going to actually fucking take away everything he loves and actually BREAK him and she has the AUDACITY to say âhang in there buddy Iâll save you :)))))â
as;ldkfjads and the cherry on top is when she says âsee you later, demon boyâ and fucking leaves, full well knowing shit like that is the entire cause of his trauma and just generally a really hurtful thing to say when heâs literally saying âiâm a demon I deserve to dieâ three seconds ago mahiru you canât tell a traumatized seven year old youâre going to save them and then call them a personalized fucking slur five seconds later
oh oh oh wait thereâs one more thing, when he asks âso whatâs the point in livingâ and Mahiru turns around to say âI donât think any human living is worth anythingâ like thanks that definitely helped Yu, then going on to say âEveryone is just a cog in the end. Get rid of this or that cog and the next one will be born soon enough to take its placeâ which hmmmm might be a reference to Yu being a clone but well
Iâve got one more thing to say about this chapter in relation to Mahiruâs words to Yu but that one relates to Mikayuu so Iâm gonna make it another one, this is getting so long

Maybe I Should Resign (Jumin/MC Oneshot)
youtube
Summary:
When your cringeworthy, cutesy cat-based post-its meant for your depressed friend are accidentally sent to your stone-hearted boss...take it as a sign to turn in your resignation letter.
o-o-o-o
It was mischievous and amusing, he admitted. The words written were always related to his current situation for some reason. Initially, it was odd and suspicious, but after it had given him comfort on several occasions, he had grown a little fond of the notes sent attached to his cup of coffee.Â
Unless it was something related to cats, he was never the type to waste time, energy, or even money on something that did not involve the family and the companyâs benefit; therefore, he never bothered finding the person behind it. He figured it was another scheme from someone who wanted to get ahold of his affection, so it was in his best interest to leave things be. The interaction went on for months, and the unknown person did not seem to have missed a single day doing the same task.
Impressive.
This mysterious person had persistence he would applaud of if he or she were not using it on something insignificant.
âMake efforts for yourself too because you are worth it!â The sticky note was purple this time.
That day, he bought himself a cat mug and was delighted by it.
Is this what commoners mean by âreward yourselfâ?
The first time the note made him frown deeply was when his father was involved with another woman, though the message was not the reason why he had made such a face. He wondered once again who the person might be behind the notes. Is it a woman who has the same intentions like his fatherâs passing lovers? Is it a man who is sucking up for a promotion?Â
He had asked Jaehee before who had been preparing his coffee lately, since he had her retire from the task to handle more important matters at hand.
âItâs the chefâs son who prepares the coffee for the executives, Mr. Han.â
âHe is not an employee.â
âYes, but he volunteered to work without pay to help his father fulfill his duties without problems. I have offered to raise the concern to you, Mr. Han, but he refused.â
He hummed, raising his hand to his chin in thought. âMake him sign a contract and ensure his pay is more than sufficient to compensate for the days he did not get paid.â
Jaehee nodded and reconfirmed, âWe will need to help him get a lawyer for the contract. The chef has mentioned before that his son is illiterate, so I will be contacting Mr. Joyou for recommendations.â
For a brief second, his eyes flashed in confusion. âAre you sure his son is illiterate?â Â
He received the third report the next day, proving that the chefâs son was indeed illiterate.
From mysterious messages, it went down south to suspicious messages.
Fortunately, nothing other than passing one-sided notes was happening. The messages were innocent and can sometimes be helpful, thus there was no need to be alarmed.
âMeow~ a kitty a day keeps the purrblem paway!â
It can sometimes be⊠cute⊠he begrudgingly confessed.Â
That was the first time it made him smile and his heart flutter.
0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0
It was a huge mistake.
All this time, she was digging her own grave, and she had no idea she had dug deep enough to be a knock away from entering the gates of hell. She had been writing him notes to cheer him up and, perhaps, brighten up his troubled days. Pretending to be a maid to gather information unavailable online from a huge company seemed to be a huge hassle. He was tasked to do it for months too; hence, she made sure he wouldnât get too lonely.
She wrote him notesâwhich she thought might help him smileâand stuck them on the cup of coffee he would serve for the employees. He never mentioned anything about it whenever they got the chance to chat. It was a bit disappointing, but her little help appeared to be working well. He seemed genuinely happy, and that was the only thing that mattered.
That was until she got a response in the form of a cat-shaped baby blue sticky note.
The coffee area was empty early in the morning. Most employees were yet to arrive, but the tray holding the cup where she usually stuck her messages already had a sticky note attached to it. Her lips touched the rim of the mug, her own sweetened coffee warming her cold lips.
Oh? A response? I wasnât expecting thatâŠ.
She took the note, flipping it around to inspect it.
Cat-shaped? Aw, so cute! Seven really loves cats.Â
Her eyes scanned the message written.
âWrite something about cats today.â
Huh? Wait, hold on, somethingâs wrong here.
She felt the heavy feeling of dread fill her stomach as she analyzed the piece of paper in her hand. Her mother had always jokingly called her âstupidâ when she was in her teens, but she never believed it was true until she actually gave evidences to such hypothesis. Her joke was probably not a half-meant joke but a prediction of what she would become in the near future.
One thing she was certain ofâŠ.
This is totally not his penmanship.
She had known Seven for years and was one of his closest friends. He would even take her out at random times to get ice cream even when his schedule was loaded. They would write on receipts and draw doodles of whatever came into their imagination. His penmanship was not necessarily messy but it carried its own charm.
This, on the other hand, looked too elegant to be his.
âUmm⊠good morning, Maâam,â greeted a young man with brown hair and light brown eyes.
She forced a smile, tucking the note into her skirtâs pocket. âGood morning! Are you gonna grab a coffee?â
âOh! Umm⊠no⊠haha! I am more of a tea person, though I make coffee for the executives.â His laugh sounded awkward, but she thought he looked like a nice guy. âPlease do excuse me,â he muttered before passing in front of her, grabbing the tray where the cup with the note was placed.
The coffee she drank nearly burst out of her nose when she choked.
âMiss?â the boy questioned in a low voice, albeit slightly alarmed, âAre you okay?â
Her laugh can sound as fake as it was, but her petrified mind was too horrified to function.
âOhohoho! I am fine! Nothing to worry about!â she beamed between coughs.
Later that day, Jumin did not get his daily note.
He tried to deny it the best he could, but it was just too evident.
It was the first time it made him upset.
Just a little bit.
0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0
When a week came without a single note from the mysterious messenger, he started to feel unusual. It may be childish of him, but because he had learned to like it, it brought him disappointment to find a typical cup of coffee served in front of him. Perhaps it was from the fact that he forcefully abandoned his childhood before that his childhood spirit came back to bite him now.
Each morning, it got him curious of what secret message he would receive for the day. Will it be another joke? Another cat pun? He learned to find excitement in the short letters and âfreebiesâ that came with it. Once, he got a stamp, and it caused him to raise a single brow.
âWhat is this?â he asked the chefâs son while he studied the white cat stamp between his fingers.
The chefâs son cocked his head to the side. âI do not have a clue, Mr. Han. I just found it on the tray next to your cup. I assumed it was something important and someone wanted to send it to you.â
It was nothing expensive, yet he kept it displayed on his table.
That was weeks ago⊠and he missed it.
Again, just a little bit.
0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0
The gossip which greeted her ears the moment she entered the office mortified her beyond belief. Apparently, the heir of the C&R International company had asked if anyone knew of someone who was courageous enough to leave âmemosâ on his cup of coffee. He worded it terribly, as though it was a violation of the companyâs rules and regulation, so it was not a surprise people made a huge deal out of it.
Iâm leaving this company. I will never rise from the ashes of my shame and humiliation. Surely, Mr. Trust Fund Kid will know immediately if heâs ever free to check the cctv footage.
With a silent battle cry, she filed her resignation a day laterâŠ
and just her luck, a secret agent had successfully stolen quite an important document from the CEO the very same day.
âYou are relieved from your mission, Agent 707.â
0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0 ~ 0
âAre you sure you did not misplace it, Father?â
Three people stood inside the CCTV control room. They were surrounded by more than 20 monitors that were flashing previous clips from the past weeks.
âI am sure without a single doubt that I kept it hidden in drawer 7.â
Dark, calculating orbs scrutinized the video. It was the last clip they were reviewing, and it was where the chairman can be last seen holding the documents prior leaving it in drawer 7.
âHow can it disappear when no one has entered Fatherâs room? Have you double checked the system if anythingâs amiss?â
He patiently waited for a response while the control manager worked on the system checkâhis eyes drifting back to the multiple clips they were previously analyzing.
There was Yeonwa chatting with Jaehee...
Jaewoo bringing in three boxes of pizza...
Helena bumping into Chongâ
He frowned.
âAugust 6, 2018â was coded on the top right corner of the screen. If he was not mistaken, the company suspended all works that day to celebrate their successful purchase of Grace Cup Store.
So why are there employees working?
âMr. Han,â the male manager cut off, âI believe the entire footage was placed in a loop since March using videos back in 2016.â
âSince⊠March?â He racked his brain for any memory that happened back in March. There were international events, meetings, partnership requestsâŠ.
âSurprises will start today~ Iâll make sure youâll enjoy it.^^â
Now that he recalled, he was pretty sure the notes started back in March.

HEART DONâT FAIL ME NOW
gendry + arya + anastasia au // ao3
Gendrya Appreciation Week, Day 2: AU
Girl gets a family.
Boy gets rich
And fairytale gets a spin
How can we fail with everything to win?
Conman and princess get their wish
Fairytale comes true
Funny, one small part I never knew
With everything to win
The only thing I lose is
 You.
- Everything to Win, Anastasia The Musical
 *****
Never, in his twenty-seven years of life and twenty-one of making a living as a thief, a swindler and a trickster on the streets of Leningrad, Gendry Waters had a worse job than teaching one infuriatingly stubborn orphan girl how to be a princess.
If only Arry did not look like the absolute older mirror copy of Princess Arya Stark, he wouldâve long ago vetoed the whole idea and, with or without Davos approval, left the girl somewhere near the closest bar so she could find a job better suited for her fiery temper and foul mouth. But, to his eternal despair, she is every bit as pale-skinned, grey-eyed and dark-haired like The Lost Princess and the fact that she doesnât seem to remember a single thing from childhood only makes the whole con easier.
She is also desperate to find out anything about her past and willing to believe in the story they made up about her with a heart-wrenching determination.
Truth to be told, Gendry can understand that. He too, comes from nothing. Maybe if he was not sure of that, if he didnât remember his motherâs clients kicking him for laughs as if he was a street rat, he would also entertain the thought of having a loving family once. Â But he does remember and he has no doubt at all that he is a rat indeed. A clever, Russian rat, but a rat still.
See, that is the whole problem about Arry â it is all about this idea of a loving family for her. She doesnât care if they were Starks or simple factory workers. She just needs to belong somewhere, it is clear as a day.
And that makes it impossible for Gendry to hate her, even when she is bickering with him all days long and getting on his last nerve every time she opens her mouth. Â
Which means all the damn time.
 ***
He found her in Winter Palace; a small figure curled on the damaged wood of the ballroomâs floor, tracing the ruined tapestry depicting the former royal family with her fingertips.
In the cold winter light getting through the shattered windows, she looked like something straight out of a dream. Dressed in mismatched, baggy clothes to keep warm and with an uneven cut hair underneath manâs hat, she might have been just another poor girl, whoring herself to keep starvation at bay. She was probably just looking for shelter from the cold. Â
No need to pay attention to her at all, I should just leave her be and look through the second floor like I planned to â
Her gasp could be heard even across the room when Gendry stepped on the particularly squeaky floorboard.
She jumped to her feet immediately, quick as a flash.
ââDonât be afraid.ââ He said, but the cold shock spread through his body, making him freeze in place.
Because the girl was standing tall in front of the tapestry and the stray sunlight framed her, caressed her features so lovingly â her cheekbones and her chin, her eyes, and her brow â that something sweet and long gone resurfaced suddenly in his memory. Buried underneath the years-long past like a smell of his motherâs hair and the screams of people butchered on the streets.
On the wall behind her, there was a damaged depiction of a small girl in silver furs, Dark-haired, long-faced, gray-eyed.
And she was staring at him silently. Dark-haired, long-faced.
Fire burning in her grey eyes.
 ***
ââ One more time. You learned how to ride horses at three.ââ
ââAnd my father got me my own when I was six.ââ
ââCorrect. The horseâs name was âââ
ââNymeria.ââ
ââI donât believe we told her that, did we?ââ
 ***
ââRobb. Sansa. Bran. Rickon. Robb. Sansa. Bran. Rickon. It doesnât seem right.ââ She whines, wriggling in her seat.
The train slowly rolls through snowy hills of Poland towards France and Gendry wants to do nothing else but savor the triumph of getting out of godforsaken Russia â oh, excuse him, Soviet Union â but he could not do that with Arryâs constant chirping. Sometimes, he wonders if the perspective of Princess Sansa offering him the girlâs weight in gold is a worthy reward for all his trouble. Sheâs a small thing, after all.
With a pained groan, he covers his eyes with his arm.
ââWould you shut up for a second?ââ
He can hear Davosâ warning huff and then Arryâs voice, dripping with honey.
ââGendry, can I ask you something?ââ
He wants to say no, but he has pushed his luck enough already. You need to control your temper, my boy, Davos said. We need to keep her happy.
ââYes?ââ
ââDo you truly believe Iâm a princess?ââ
No.
He drops his arm and nods his head slowly. Arry sits with her back straight as a rod and her chin up, the way they taught her. Gendry cannot help but think that this posture suits her.
ââYes, I do.ââ
She bites on her lip slightly and then one of her eyebrows slowly raises up in a perfect arch.
ââWell, is it a way to speak to a princess then?ââ she says coolly, dignified, and Davos doesnât manage to reach for his tissue fast enough to mask his laughter under fake coughing.
Somehow, itâs hard to scowl at her after that.
 ***
ââWhatâs so incorrect about that?ââ he asks her later, in the dead of the night, when only Davosâ snoring interrupts the silence in their car.
ââHuh?ââ
ââNo, huh. Pardon.ââ
ââFine. Pardon?ââ
ââWhen you were repeating- ââ Princess Aryaâs ââ-your siblingsâ names. You said that thereâs something incorrect about them.ââ
ââOh, that.ââ She stays silent for a moment and he turns his head slightly to glance at her. In the darkness he can only see the outline of her body, its hills and valleys under the blanket. He can paint the rest in his mind; Arry in a white nightdress, her feet bare and hair loose. Warm and pink. Â
He shivers slightly and pulls his own blanket higher under his chin.
ââI just think there is something missing. Or rather someone. There should be one more person, before Robb.ââ
Gendryâs heart loses its rhythm in his chest.
ââHave you read about this person somewhere?ââ he asks cautiously, but he somehow already know what her answer will be.
ââNo. All the books you gave me name five royal children. Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon.ââ
Heâs glad for the darkness, cause just as it shields her from him, it also shields him from her. So she cannot see how heâs staring at the ceiling, internal battle tearing him apart.
ââThere was.. there was one more Stark child.ââ
She sits up so abruptly that she bumps her head against the top bunk of her bed and groans.
ââWhat? If so, why didnât you-ââ
ââHis name was Jon. He was King Nedâs bastard son, thatâs why heâs not in the books. Not worth mentioning.ââ Gendryâs voice drops to a whisper. ââHe was also not very popular at the court. There is not much to know about him, anyway. They sent him to the military before the Revolution and he died at war.ââ
Gendry can hear her sharp inhale. He doesnât dare to look in her direction.
ââWell, it was stupid of you not to mention him anyway. What if Princess Sansa asked me about her â about our forth brother and I wouldnât know what sheâs talking about?ââ
Gendry knows Arry is right. He doesnât know himself why he told Davos not to inform her about the existence of the Bastard Prince.
(Only, itâs a complete lie, because he does know. Because Princess Arya was rumored to have a lot of affection for Jon, going as far as calling him her favorite brother. Out of all her siblings, he would be probably the most difficult for her to forget. Which meant- which could mean that-)
ââJon.ââ She flops back on the mattress. ââJon. Robb. Sansa. Bran. Rickon.ââ
Gendry remains silent, hands clenched into fists.
ââYes.ââ She sighs sleepily against her pillow. ââYes, now it sounds right.ââ
 ***
He is sure he has suffered through the worst of it; through history and etiquette lessons, through her terrible table manners and sailorâs mouth, through getting out of Russia and getting to Paris.
He thinks that he and Davos actually managed to transform dirty orphan Arry into a well-educated, bright and charming Princess Arya, or at least, a very good imitation of her. She doesnât keep her elbows on the table anymore, can recite the whole family tree of the Starks three centuries back and is an excellent cyvasse player.
And he⊠enjoys her company. Somehow.
So the dancing lesson takes him by a complete surprise.
ââCome on, lad, pull her closer! I couldâve fit another couple in-between you.ââ Davos barks and he sounds far too gleeful for Gendryâs taste. ââHer Majesty is doing splendidly. Maybe she should be the one instructing you, huh?ââ
Arry laughs at that, gracefully spinning underneath Gendryâs arm. Her blue dress swirls around her bare calves when she turns.
Itâs really pretty. It looked good on the hanger in the shop when he was picking it out, but now that sheâs wearing it â now that sheâs wearing it, it has completely transformed into something truly beautiful.
ââOne, two, three. One, two, three.ââ Davos counts, but it sounds distant somehow.
All Gendry can really hear is his own heartbeat and the slide of silk against her skin; all he can really feel is the smell of her hair and her perfume, light and fresh. Where did she get it?
Left and right and backward and forward, they waltz to the music from a borrowed gramophone in their hotel room. Arry avoids looking down at her feet by staring right into his eyes as instructed, and it somehow makes him feel both hot and cold, uncomfortable and hungry.
After two rounds, they no longer step on each otherâs feet and simply go through the motions, silently moving around each other. Closer. And closer.
Sheâs so confident now, no longer skittish like a deer. There is not a single ounce of shyness on her face. Only curiosity⊠curiosity and a dash of awe.Â
One, two, three, one, two, three, left and right and backward and forward and spin.
His fingers itch to caress her blushed cheeks, to brush stray strands of hair from her forehead.
One, two, three, one, two, three, left and right and backward and forward and spin.
His hand fits in the dip of her waist perfectly.
This smell⊠light and fresh. Nothing with flowers. More like a wind â like pines, like snow â
There is no snow in Paris, itâs ridiculous, pull yourself together Gendry, for fuckâs sake
ââI think Davos went to sleep.ââ Arya whispers and Gendry abruptly stops moving, making her lose her balance and bump against his chest, their legs tangling together.
He glances at the empty armchair above her head. You old fox
ââYeah. Itâs â itâs probably late. I think we practiced enough.ââ Â He lets out through clenched teeth, looking down at her still in the circle of his arms.
Arry bites on her lip and thereâs this overwhelming desire in Gendry, wild and dazzling, to just reach out and pull it from in-between her teeth, to just press his mouth to her instead, to make her moan and gasp the way she sometimes does in her sleep and I am forced to listen and do nothing, nothing at all, cause this is just a con, and she is just a girl, and none of this is even real.
ââGoodnight, Your Majesty.ââ He drops her hands and leaves, leaves as fast as he can.
 ***
ââYouâre playing a dangerous game, lad.ââ
ââI donât know what you mean.ââ
ââOh, young hearts. They want what they want, truly.ââ
ââFuck off and let me sleep, wonât you?ââ
 ***
Gendry finds her on a bridge next to the hotel. Sheâs staring at the Seine lazily passing down below,  humming to herself this strange lullaby, as she always seems to when sheâs feeling uncertain. Â
Far away, long ago, burning dim as an ember
ââStressed?ââ he asks, softly, so as not to startle her.
But maybe she knows his steps just as well as he knows hers by now, because, when she turns around to face him, she doesnât look surprised at all.
It fits her, all of this. The beautiful dresses they obtained through Countess Shireen. Hair bows and pearls. Fine silk stockings.
Her hair reaches past shoulder blades now, curling at the ends a bit. Even when they are messed by a wind, sheâs still every inch an image of a princess. Every inch of her perfect and enchanting.
ââA bit. ââ Arry admits. ââTomorrow, I might get everything Iâve ever wanted. But I can also find out that this-ââ she gestures down at the pink skirt of her gown and her shiny shoes. ââ-is just a lie. That Iâm a lie. I can break this womanâs heart.ââ
Gendry takes a few steps to stand next to her, leaning on the railing by her side.
ââI just wish I could feel like Princess Arya. Sheâs still somehow a foreign person to me.ââ She raises her eyes to the outline of the Eiffel Tower at the horizon, harsh black lines against sky bleeding with a setting sun.
And the resolve that Gendry kept inside his heart for fifteen long years breaks.
ââI saw her, once. When I was twelve.ââÂ
Arry whips her head towards him, mouth opened in shock, but Gendryâs firmly staring down at the dark river, lost in the memories.
ââThere was a parade in Saint Petersburg. It was hot, especially in a crowd â I think it mustâve been June or July. Royal family rode in a carriage, surrounded by guards, but I was tall for my age, and quick; I ran along, hoping for a glimpse of them. There were rumors that they wear clothes made of gold.ââ He chuckles quietly. ââAnd then there was some commotion on the street, so the carriage stopped. And I saw her.ââ
Her, not you. His hands grip railing tighter, but Arry doesnât seem to notice.
ââHow did she look like?ââ she asks, her voice shaking like a leaf on a wind.
ââShe was wriggling in her seat like a worm. I think Princess Sansa was scolding her, but she didnât seem to listen. She kept on waving to the people and, for just a second, our eyes met.ââ
He remembers it so well. Ever since he Arry appeared in his life, he hasnât been able to stop thinking about that day, how it made him feel everything at once; how such an insignificant thing turned his world upside down.
This image of a little princess, so joyful and so vibrant, has kept him warm through many long nights. And the thought that such a bright light was snuffed out in a bloody basement so easily, made him the person he is now. There is nothing beautiful in this world, not a single thing he can protect or preserve. Nothing. Â Â
Or, so he thought. Until another pair of gleaming eyes gazed into his.
ââShe had â she had such beautiful eyes. Such happy eyes. I had never seen eyes like that before.ââ
The silence falls between them for a moment, before Arry inhales deeply.
ââA parade in June.ââ She says. ââIn Saint Petersburg.ââ
ââThatâs right.ââ
ââCrowded streets. ââ she closes her eyes. ââIt was hot, not a cloud on the sky. I was riding with my family and everyone was cheering for us and Sansa kept on telling me to sit down, but I wanted to see better. I wanted to see all those people, to thank them for coming to see us.ââ
Her skin turns honey-golden when the sun submerges into the Seine.
ââThen the boy caught my eye. Tall and skinny. Dark-haired. He looked at me  with those pretty blue eyesâŠ. and bowed.ââ
Boom. The church bells ring.
Boom. His heart hammers in his chest.
Boom. Arya spins on her feet and looks at him, wide-eyed.
ââI didnât tell you that.ââ escapes from in-between his stiff lips.
ââI know.ââ she takes his hands in hers, cool from the metal railing and trembling. ââI remember.ââ
 Boom.
He drops to his knees.
 ***
The worst thing is, he should be happy.
He should be happy, cause he is about to become filthy rich; no more sleeping on the streets, no more struggling, stealing, running away. He is in France and there is a whole wide world ahead of him. Their impossible, half-cooked plan actually worked and it seems like they somehow, by some insane miracle, actually did not con anyone at all.
They delivered Princess Arya to her sister. She finally had a place where she could belong. The family she dreamt about her whole life.
And for this good, good deed, Gendry is going to be rewarded with a pile of gold.
So, he should be fucking overjoyed.
ââI donât want it.ââ He says to Princess Aryaâs butler. The man looks as if he did not understand Gendryâs Russian, so he repeats in French. ââI donât want the money.ââ
ââBut sir, Princess Sansa-ââ
ââPlease tell her that â that the joy of her sister is a big enough reward for me. I donât want this money.ââ
Arya, in the opera, in this night-sky-dress sparkling with diamonds and falling down her body like a waterfall. The line of her spine and her shoulder blades moving underneath her skin. The smell of her hair; pine and fresh snow.
Her happy grey eyes.
A silver tiara atop her head.
He wants nothing to do with the Starks, nothing at all.
 ***
ââSo, you didnât take the money.ââ
ââI didnât.ââ
ââWhy?ââ
How can you ask me this?
ââI didnât feel like taking them.ââ
ââThatâs not an answer.ââ
ââYes, it is.ââ
ââNo, it isnât!ââ
ââYes, it is! Gods, Arya, can you, for once in your life, not make it difficult for me?ââ
He doesnât know what sheâs doing here, standing in front of his hotel in the pouring rain and letting it soak her to the bone. He would offer her his umbrella or a coat, if he wasnât so angry at her.
She has her sister now, what is she looking for here?
ââI just want to know why you didnât take the money.ââ She stubbornly repeats. Droplets slide down her cheeks like tears. ââTell me that and Iâll let you go.ââ
ââOh, and whatâs stopping me know, Your Majesty? Did you bring your guards with you, ordering to stop me from leaving if you wonât get what you want from me?ââ he snarls and regrets it the moment the words drop in no manâs land between them.
Aryaâs face breaks and she takes a step back as if he slapped her.
ââYou know I didnât, Gendry.ââ She sounds awfully small, looks awfully small in a wet dress and with her hair plastered to her head and neck.
Desperation does ugly things with a person, Princess.
ââIâm leaving Paris, Your Majesty. I wish you all the happiness.ââ He says stiffly and steps on the street, passing Arya with his suitcase in one hand and an umbrella in another.
ââNo.ââ
He wants to weep. He knows her. How could he believe it would be so simple?
Arya has her arms wrapped around his waist, her face pressed to his back. He can feel shivers running through her body.
ââPlease, Gendry. Please. Tell me why.ââ She whispers and his blood boils in his veins, coloring the Paris red in front of his eyes.
ââBecause you are not a transaction to me!ââ he shouts desperately, turning around to face her. His hands grab her shoulders; the umbrella and the suitcase drop to the pavement and the cold rain viciously attack all exposed parts of his body. He cannot find it in himself to care about that, not even a bit. ââBecause maybe it started as a con, but it isnât and itâs â itâs you, Arya. Itâs you and I cannot pretend anymore that I donât care, because I do. I care so much. And youâre a princess and Iâm just me and this can never work, and I-ââ
Her lips are cold and wet against his. He tastes salt on them; salt, pine, and snow.
His hands fit around her waist perfectly.
His stubborn, impossible princess, laughing, when she embraces him.Â
 ***
 Dear Sansa,
I am so sorry for leaving so quickly after we reunited, but you know yourself I was never suited to be a princess. It seems that I have found myself a family even before I met you again. I cannot abandon him now.
Wish me luck! Weâll be in Paris together soon, I promise.
I hope youâll understand. After all, youâve always loved grand stories of romance.
Your little sister,
Arya. Â

An Ephemeral Eternity in Seven Parts - Steve Rogers x Reader
MASTERLIST Warnings: Gifs arenât mine. My English. Also, last sentence - well, maybe itâs the start of something new. Word Count~ 7k. Part I Part II Part III Part IV Part V Part VI PART VII
The melancholic notes of the guitar accompanied her soft and broken voice in a song that reminded very much of a lamentation of her past, her present and her future.
Everything she touched, begun to decay. Everyone she loved, had only ended up unloved, depressed, addicted or alone. It had made her wonder if she was the one; if she was the wolf dressed as the little red riding hood. What if everyone around her was simply a helpless sheep and to prowl for her next meal she clothed herself in love and kindness, only to poison those closest to her until they are damaged beyond repair. She could only ever ruin so many relationships before she understood that the devil lived inside of her making her a toxic landfill disguised in fake beautiful grass and flowers - she had never been afraid of the monster in her closet, she had always been terrified by the one she saw in the mirror. She didn't remember which night it was - the one she left, like a thief, not making a sound, knowing that he heard her. It made her decision easier when he didn't even try to stop her. It was selfish - he had been badly broken too. She felt the failure calling out her name - she couldn't make it better for him because she was a mess. She had lost herself and she wasn't sure she wasn't sure she wanted to be found. And so she left. She took a few clothes with her and left. She had no solid plan for her days ahead. She couldn't find a point to it. She had wandered aimlessly when she found herself in a small city that did not speak English. She had smiled painfully to herself. A stranger among strangers.Â
Not long after her decision to stay there for a while, she had to find a way to earn some money in order to get by. The kind old lady, who had helped her with almost everything, seeing in her face the granddaughter she had lost just mere weeks before she turned up in her door - since she was one of the very few people who spoke English - had offered her a job she thought it would suit her. There was a small place where those who stayed behind went to drink and listen to old and soft songs about loss, love and pain. They were missing a singer. She had thought why not. Isabella had been nothing but kind and sweet, just like a real grandmother - not that she had met one. "Grief is a deeply personal and solitary journey. No one can truly feel or understand your loss but you, even those who have experienced it themselves. But grief is also love, and for that reason it has a right to exist and be felt. It is the debt we owe our memories. It is the final way we love someone" she had soothed her after the first time she heard her sing. There was pain in her voice, even when she sung in Spanish. She had never believed it would cost her everything. Yet, it did.Â
Months flew by as she had fallen into a simple yet so human routine. Many handsome men had threw themselves to her but she had closed herself, letting no one in. She had lost people along the way. She had left others behind. She had cut them out of her life, sometimes uncertain if it was the right decision. Looking back, she had done things she might have regretted now. This quieter life she had now was closer to the one she had been dreaming the cold nights that she had been held by HYDRA or trained by Madam B. She couldn't sake the feeling that something was missing - she was different and she hadn't ever realized. The girl from her past wasn't the woman she had grown to be. "Hay un hombre guapo buscĂĄndote, cariño" Isabella suddenly told her, making her slightly jump from the couch she had been seated for at least two hours, starring at the wall. Seeing her lost eyes, Isabella sat down next to her and took her hands in hers. "Listen, cariño. Love transcends gender, age, political beliefs; it crosses borders. Itâs literally the strongest motivator and force we have. It makes people do things they canât explain. And it comes in all forms and it comes when you least expect it and it comes and it goes and it changes and people have spent years and wrote books and studied the stars trying to understand it. And sometimes itâs the boy you called over to get over, the boy you were crying about and sometimes itâs the girl you grew up next door to your whole life and sometimes itâs a friend who saved your soul or a baby you didnât expect. But itâs all around us in forms yet to be manifested- letters yet to be written, hands yet to be held. And all goodness stems from it and it literally changes the world. So even though it sometimes causes us pain and it drags us into situations we didnât ask for, we can never close ourselves off to it or give up on it. We have to keep loving because itâs the closest thing we have to magic and without it weâre just a conscious pile of bones and life means nothing. Ve hacia el" and just like that, from the mouth of someone who used to be a stranger, the entire meaning of life and love and pain was summed up into a minute of hope. Isabella had lost her son and her granddaughter, everyone she ever loved and yet, there she was telling her to embrace life with its bad and its good. Tears she had no idea when they escaped, were running down her face. "Mi bella Isabella, gracias por tu sabidurĂa. Gracias por tu amor. But if I go to him, I'll leave you and I can't do that to you" she told her truthfully. Isabella just shook her head and smiled. "I'll always be here. Go to him, cariño". She kissed her cheek and hugged her as tightly as she would love to be hugged. She had been everything she was missing.
As the song went on, her eyes fell on him - he had just entered the place. And every memory she kept tacked away, came back rushing through her veins. In her head, she could hear Isabella's words but her heart just didn't want to get hurt again. She knew the moment he talked to her, she would succumb her entire being to his hands.Â
War was the only dance he had ever known and she wished they could have had more time amid the chaos and fire and blood to show him that there could be another way. She fell in love with the way he saw the world, the way he saw her... She fell in the chasm of his soul and his light. She would gladly drown in the darker half of the sea to hold him in her arms for more than just that single night of peace. She had been aware that they had met and they had loved in a warzone and even though his kisses had melted away the gunfire, they still held echoes of the fire burning in him but she knew hers were the same. He had been worth the risk time and time again because with his hand burning into her skin, she had hope once more ... and the blood that had stained him couldn't take away his goodness and the stars that had betrayed him, didn't mean she forsaken her devotion. There had always been a rage built inside their souls, just like this love was worthy of burning empires down ... screams that follow them all the way home only to be quieted when she kissed the blood from his lips... and even when the universe will force them to part he will remain, echoing in her heart that only belonged to him. She knew that they were the ugly parts of the love story but she also knew they were the beautiful ones too. The song came to an end and she went to the table she held every night, the one far away from the lights and the people. Eyes never leaving his, she nodded for him to join her, as she poured herself a glass of red wine. He had never been so afraid of a moment and its impact. He had no idea what to say to her or how to be around her, when she poured and offered him another glass of wine. "I didn't know you could sing" he told her before he hid his face in his hands, only to resurface as red as a tomato. She tried to swallow her laughter but failed. "You're still not good with women, Steve" and just by saying his name, her heart places itself in his hands. He smiled brightly even though he had messed up his opening line, it had worked out. She was sipping her wine with a fondness he had never seen before. Maybe leaving was the best thing she had done - and he would be selfish to ask her back. Again. Not leaving her alone, to decide her own path. He needed her in a way he hadn't needed anyone since... "I will come back Steve. But I need you to promise me that we will search and search over and over again for a way to undo this -and if we don't find one it will be because there isn't, not because we overlooked it" she told him boldly with her eyes a soft lilac color, as she looked over her shoulder, signaling to someone to approach them He was taken aback. He believed that she wouldn't even want to talk about what had happened. He had seen the way Bucky had looked at her before he... and he had already suspected his feelings towards her. Steve knew it had a great impact on her - not that it had been the only reason for her breakdown. After realizing her new powers she had refused to use them because they were the reason half of the planet was dead. He looked at her with a new found admiration - she was the bigger person. "Of course. May I ask why?" he prepared himself to hear a reason he wouldn't like, instead, his heart broke a little bit more. She smiled and stood up to give her sit to an old woman he had never seen before. It was the first time Steve saw this side of her. "Isabella, este es Steve. Ese hombre guapo que me estaba buscando" she spoke in Spanish making him question if he knew her at all. Isabella took his hands into hers and looked at him just like his mother would have, which caused some tears to appear. They got to know each other and he realized that she had never felt the love of a family - and she craved it. When Isabella said her goodnight, having already invited him to spend the night in her house, she grew quiet. She knew he was waiting for an answer. "She is the reason why. She lost everything - her son, her granddaughter - and yet she hasn't lost hope. She told me to live life with everything that comes with it and embrace it because it's all we got. She is the reason I am talking to you. She told me 'go to him' because love is the closest thing we have to magic and I couldn't just tell her I have magic running through my veins but couldn't save her family" she said with fire in her words and determination pouring over her.Â
It felt wrong. Being back, felt wrong. She had followed him once again, but this time she hadn't found the people she had last time. She felt out of time â as if she didnât belong. No one was waiting for her; Natasha was broken and Tony was nowhere near the place. Maybe she had been naĂŻve for trusting him again; deep down she knew the only thing they had been left with was bitterness. She spent her days reading, training and trying out different things. Steve had an unhealthy need to fill Samâs shoes as he had begun some group session. The irony was obvious to her; He was telling them, urging them to move on while he would never. She had seen as much in his eyes when they were talking about his past and the beginnings of his story â way before he became Captain America. There was one particular story he didnât feel like sharing and she understood why â but also bothered her. She had kept her promise and had searched everything in order to find a way to undo this. She had spent days and nights looking for an answer. There had been times she felt so useless she wouldnât get out of her room â nobody dared to disagree with her on those days. Slowly yet steadily, Steve and her grew distant and she felt as if they were miles apart even when they were sitting right next to each other. Being positive had never been one of her assets and that fake optimism Steve had, got on her nerves. Then again, maybe it was just his way of coping with the events. She had found herself longing to leave the base and go back to Isabellaâs house more than enough times to realize that she never felt at home in the Avengerâs base. And the years flew by without even noticing it. The only thing new must had been the fact that she met Carol, a woman with many of her own powers and a life experience to match them. Other than that, Natasha had been obsessing over Clint â who had gone dark after his family disappearance. She could never say that all of those people had died â they had just dusted away. Which was the same and she had been fooling herself for a very long time. Steve had been the positive fucking little unicorn in front of others but he was so lost when they were alone. A raccoon was sending them emails with reports and Nebula wanted to get revenge a tad more than all of them combined.  She knew things were bound to be different, but she couldnât recognize anything anymore. She had been drifted away from those around her because she didnât feel a connection to them anymore â the only thing they had in common was anger. She had just made a cup of coffee when Steve walked in, finding Natasha on the verge of crying as he went on about the bright side, but Nat wasnât having it. She just plopped down next to Natasha, smiling towards Steve without even bothering to listen to their conversation but her eye caught something. Something unexpected. âOh! Hi. Hi! Is anyone home? This is Scott Lang. We met a few years ago, at the airport? In Germany? I got really big, and I had my mask on. You wouldn't recognize meâ Scott Lang was rumbling on at their front gate. Before she could register their reactions, she had buzzed him in and left the room running towards him. âHave you ever studied Quantum Physics?â Scott asked them a moment later. âOnly to make conversationâ came a sarcastic answer by Natasha, which didnât bring him down. âAlright. So... five years ago, right before Thanos, I was in a place called the Quantum Realm. The Quantum Realm is like its own microscopic universe. To get in there, you have to be incredibly small. Hope, she's my... She was my... She was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened, and I got stuck in thereâ he said while he was struggling not to tell the entire truth about their relationship. âI'm sorry. That must've been a very long five yearsâ Natasha sincerely told him only to be shocked when he replied the most unbelievable thing. âYeah, but that's just it. It wasn't. For me, it was five hoursâ. Steve and Nat shared a quick bewildered glance, while she had figured it out, because she had indeed studied Quantum Physics. âSee, the rules of the Quantum Realm aren't like they are up here. Everything is unpredictable. Is that anybody's sandwich? I'm starvingâ Scott said as he strode over to pick up Nat's sandwich, and bit into it. âScott, what are you talking about?â Steve asked him confused and puzzled. âWhat he is saying is, time works differently in the Quantum Realmâ she chimed in, gaining a strange look from Steve and a very impressed one from Scott. âThe only problem is right now, we don't have a way to navigate it. But what if we did? I can't stop thinking about it. What if, we could somehow control the chaos, and we could navigate it? What if there was a way to enter the Quantum Realm at a certain point in time but then exit at another point in time? Like...â he went on. âLike before Thanosâ she half-whispered. âWait, are you two talking about a time machine?â Steve asked as he couldnât believe his ears. âNo. No, of course not. No, not a time machine. It's more like a... Yeah, a time machine. I know it's crazy. But I can't stop thinking about it. There's gotta be some way... There's gotta be...some w... it's crazyâ his craziness was making her head dizzy. She knew they would have to talk to her father, sooner or later. She hoped it would be later but that was not gonna the case. âScott, I get e-mails from a raccoon, so nothing sounds crazy anymoreâ Nat reassured him. âSo who do we talk to about this?â Scott cut to the chase and everyone looked at her.Â
They pulled over at his cabin and one by one got out of the car. Tony looked at them and she could tell that he was not looking forward to the discussion about to take place. He acknowledged her with a single hey, and so she decided to let them talk in peace while she was gazing at the lake from afar. "I know you got a lot on the line. You got a wife, a daughter. But I lost someone very important to me. A lot of people did. And now, now we have a chance to bring her back. To bring everyone back. And you're telling me that won't even... â his voice got louder as he tried to sell his desperation to Tony. âThat's right, Scott, I won't even. I got a kidâ Tony simply told them, making her remark. âYeah, now heâs got a kidâ she retorted, making him realize what he had just said. As on cue, Morgan run to her dad, who picked her up. âMommy told me to come and save you. And to tell to the pretty girl to stay a whileâ Morgan told him as she pointed at his other daughter. âGood job. I'm saved. I wish you'd come here to ask me something else. Anything else. Honestly, I... I missed you guys, it was... Oh, and table's set for sixâ he went on and informed them. âTony, I get it. And I'm happy for you, I really am. But this is a second chanceâ Steve tried to reason with him but she already knew he wasnât gonna give up just yet. He had to solve it on his own. âI got my second chance right here, Cap. I can't roll the dice again. If you don't talk shop, you can stay for lunch. And you should stay for a whileâ he concluded as he turned to face her. She smiled at him. She was going to stay a while and Steve saw it. It was hard to say goodbye but unfortunately it had become easier with the years. Steve, Nat and Scott were walking back to their car outside Tony's house as she was stepping inside, hugging Pepper. She could feel him slipping away from her life but she didnât know how to keep him there â well, she didnât even know if he wanted to be there anymore.
The day had been quiet, Pepper was an amazing mother and Tony was trying to be a great dad but he knew that he had failed once before, so he wasnât hoping for much. They had lunch and she met Morgan a bit better. The kid was smart, but that didnât come as a surprise, it was rather a given. âSo how do you two know each other?â she asked suspiciously as she eyed her. Tony almost chocked but she kept her calm, as she was sipping a glass of wine. âWe used to work together for a project, sweetieâ she smoothly told her without raising any suspicion and even thought Tony felt relieved, Pepper shoot him an angry look, making him nod his head as if they made a promise. âYouâre an Avenger!â Morgan exclaimed, excited with her new discovery. But before she could say a thing, Morgan begun asking questions â more questions than anyone before, leaving her stumped. âHoney, come on. Donât bombard her with your questions. Wanna help me with dessert?â Pepper came to the rescue quickly and she couldnât be more thankful. Silence fell and it was awkward because no one was going to break it first and Pepper knew as she said louldy "talk". Both of them rolled their eyes at that. "She is smart, that's from your side and she is beautiful - that's all Pepper" she commented shortly after. He almost laughed at her quick comeback. "How are you? How are things back?" he asked her sincerely, trying to make up for all the lost time. She shook her head, not wanting to lie. Something he understood very well. "Let me guess. You have been drifted away from people, especially Steve" he made a wild guess and he knew he was right. She stopped hiding her feelings. "Everything I thought I had is no longer. That's why I came here with them. They are asking you to be a hero and save the world. I just wanted to ask you a favor. A while back, I... I left and went -" "To a nice lady called Isabella, who lost her son and granddaughter" he finished her sentence for her, leaving her puzzled. "What? Did you really think I wasn't looking after you?" he asked her. "Well, you left to start a family and didn't even call, so... um. I should have" she concluded at last. He disagreed with her. She had stayed there, not to ask him to fight with them, but to help her find a way, because she knew that there was going to be o return for him and she wanted Morgan to have both of her parents and to feel loved. One of his daughters should.Â
She was just watching him work from the couch as she was drinking a hot cup of tea. âLook at a mod inspiration, let me see what check out. So, recommend one last sim before we pack it in for the nightâ he gave orders to his computer. âMaybe in the shape of a mobius strip, inverted, donât you think?â she commented as she took a look to the holographic experiment. He agreed with an impressed look. âDo as the lady suggestsâ he informed Friday. âProcessing... â âGive me that eigenvalue. That, particle factoring, and a spectral decomp. That will take a secondâ he had just stepped away, towards the couch but it was not to be. âAnd don't worry if it doesn't pan out. I'm just kinda ââ âModel renderedâ Friday announced sending waves of bewilderments down her spine. Tony in a complete shock of amazement as the render came back as 99.987% successful, fell back ecstatic by this discovery. âShit!â they both exclaimed at the same time. âShitâ Morgan giggled as she repeated the word they had just uttered. Tony took on the father roll quicker than she had thought as he nodded to her to take care of everything that had just been projected while he took Morgan away. They had solved time travel. They had actually found out how to go back in time. Her mind was blown away just by looking at it. As she was walking around the holographic model, Pepper came down the stairs looking for her. âYou should rest honey. Itâs lateâ she told her like a mother would. She smiled at her and waited for Tony to get back. âMaybe itâs notâ she told her, leaving her puzzled. They both sat on the couch, Pepper reading a book and she was just thinking of the endless possibilities. People less lucky than her would get to see the sun again. Isabellaâs family. Spider-kid, Wanda, Strange, Bucky. Oh Gods, Bucky. She had tried to forget about him and how much it had affected her. It had been one of the few failures of her life. âNot that it's a competition, but she loves me 3000. You were somewhere on the low 6 to 900 rangeâ Tony announced as he joined them and got Pepper to scoff. âWhat are you reading?â he asked absentmindedly as she noticed. âOh, it's just a book on compostingâ Pepper told him, making her long for a simple life once more. âWhat's new with composting?â he asked again without really wanting an answer. Before she could, he cut her off. âWe figured it out, by the wayâ he blurred out, pointing at his daughter proudly. âYou know, just so we're talking about the same thing ââ Pepper tried to catch up on their new discovery, very happy they were working together. âTime travelâ he simply informed like it was nothing. âWhat? Wow... That's amazing, and... terrifying. Oh, thatâs why you told me maybe itâs not lateâ she told him amazed as she turned to her still very much astonished. âWe got really luckyâ she commented and both of them agreed. âYeah, I knowâ her father said a tad sad. âA lot of people didn'tâ Pepper softly nudged him. âNo, I can't help everybodyâ he tried to be civilized and open for debate about it. âIt sorta seems like you can. Both of youâ his wife disagreed. âNot if I stop. I can put a pin in it right now, and stopâ he insisted but they all new what was about to happen. âTony, trying to get you to stop has been one of the few failures of my lifeâ Pepper echoed her thought from moments ago. Tony smiled proudly about that very fact. âI sometimes feel I should put it in a locked box and drop it at the bottom of a lake... go to bedâ he had almost given up on saying no. He wasnât able to deny that she was right. âBut would you be able to rest?â her soft voice pierced through his head. âAnd neither would you. I know that you left at some point because the memories were too muchâ she told her with honesty. She couldnât believe how selfless Pepper was being about something so dangerous. âCome on, kiddo. Itâs time to sleep. Tomorrow we are gonna go on a tripâ Tony urged his daughter. She could get use to that. âGoodnight Pepper. Goodnight To-⊠dadâ she finally told him, making him smile in pure happiness for the first time in a while. Â
The whole world was changing and she had been a part of that very fact. Every plan, every strategy and every theory had been mapped out but she knew that sometimes, even the cleverest of minds can miss a point â so small that no one could have seen. Wanda was trying destroy Thanos, having cost everything to her, Scott and Hope were trying to kick start the engine of the van and everyone was trying to get the gauntlet as far away as possible, without it being very easy of a task.Â
Pepper landed next to Okoye, followed by Mantis, Shuri, the Wasp, Gamora, Nebula and herself much to everyone elseâs opinion â they all thought she was going to be right by Steve. Thanos' army charged while they helped Carol Danvers gey through the Outriders, Sakaarans and Chitauri. When Carol and she flew towards the van with the Gauntlet, Thanos, after being stopped by Pepper, Shuri and Hope, threw his double sword at the van, destroying it completely. He knocked Carol down and smacked Tony away as Thor arrived in an attempt to pin Thanoâs arm down â Steve came rushing towards them, helping Thor but they were all overpowered. In a desperate attempt, when she saw Thanos picking up the gauntlet she punched him away. Thanos grabbed her by the arm and threw her away like she weighted nothing. Thanos put on the gauntlet, gamma radiation from the stones all over his body, as he tried to snap, but she arose again, and stopped his fingers from snapping, opening up his hand similar to what she had seen Steve doing in the other battle. She almost had him, forcing him onto his knees, as her powers were finally enough, she was ready to steal the stones herself. She knew she could take them on â she was part of them and they were part of her. But alas, he pulled the Power Stone out of the Gauntlet and used it in his free hand to hit her away, almost killing her in the prosses. Tony was looking at his daughter terrified and too scared to think of what might happen. He made one last attack on Thanos, having an entirely different plan on his mind. Thanos pushed him away, ending up right next to his older daughter. All it took was one look and she knew â before she could anything at all, everything was already over. âI am inevitableâ Thanos snapped his fingers, but nothing happened. He saw that the stones were missing. âNO!â she screamed but Tony simply smiled at her. s except a metallic "clink." He sees the Infinity Stones are missing.
âAnd Iâ amâ Iron Manâ.
The cruelest thing that someone had done to her was first claim to love her more than anything in the world. That he had never seen anything as exquisite as her. That she was every star in the night sky. That he would never leave her. And then one day, out of the blue he did. He lulled her into a false sense of security, convincing her that this, this is the forever love she have been looking for. This is the kind of love she needed all this time, the kind of love she had craved and let her get comfortable in it because it would last. And then, one day, he walked away. He made her believe that there would never be another. And then one day, he forgot her. He simply left without warning after promising her eternity. How ephemeral it turned out to be... It had been years since he came back. Not him - not her Steve. Peggy's Steve. She had refused to meet him - she had refused to even look at him, or be in the same building. She felt betrayed. She had lost Natasha as she had sacrificed herself to get the fucking Soul Stone. She had lost her father and that felt on her - she still felt responsible. And then Steve had decided to leave her all alone to fight her demons after constantly reassuring her he loved her. But he caught her by surprise, when he entered her office, as she was now in charge of everything her father once held - Morgan was too young and Pepper wanted some time off with her daughter. He knocked the door, waited for her to call him in and he entered. She had been facing the other way, on a phone call but the minute she turned and faced him, her phone fell on the floor and her heart skipped more beats than she could count. "Hello, Ms.. Stark. Do you have a minute for an old friend?" he was being polite as well as sarcastic but her mind had already imploded, so what the fuck? Gaining some of her confidence back, she raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms. "We were never friends, Mr. Rogers" she fired coldly but he knew her better and she hated it. He looked at her and all it took was a moment. He too raised his eyebrow and walked towards her with absolutely no intention of leaving. Before she could register his acts, he had enveloped her in to his big hug and she felt so fucking angry - it still felt like home. Without even knowing it, she was crying with her head almost resting on his chest. "Itâs weird. Itâs weird how you have the same face but youâre a completely different person. Itâs weird how I have so many amazing memories with you but they died off as youâre a completely different person. Itâs weird that Iâm mourning over someone that is still alive because youâre a completely different person. Itâs weird, youâre a completely different person. And I hate you for leaving me, but I can never really hate you because I love you" she told him as he sat them down to her couch. She left his arms to look at him. She lowered her walls and finally opened up to him again. "If I could do it all again, I would stay up later. I would ask more questions, unashamed of how personal they were and not afraid that I wouldnât like the answers. If I could start over with you, I wouldnât doubt my instincts. I wouldnât fear what people thought if I catered to your every whim and laughed at every stupid joke. If I could try again, I would embrace every moment of every fight and ask for everything I needed from you. I wouldnât worry if I was too needy, too attached, too much of anything. I would be myself more. I would scream louder. I wouldnât hesitated to tell you I love you, in every way, every day. If I could do it again, I would not love you in halting steps always looking for some sort of validation that I was stepping on solid ground. I would jump into you and if you didnât catch me, then I would still be picking up the same broken pieces I am now" she sincerely told him. She had lost both her friend and her father, both of them in the name of salvation and then Steve choose to leave her and go back. She had refused to exist for a while because she couldn't function. As everything crumbled around her, she had looked for a something to hold on to, but those closest couldnât hear her amidst their screaming matches. She looked for those who swore to be there during her weakest moment only to see the illusion fade away leaving only crossed fingers, emptiness, and disappointment. She was done searching for someone, when someone did appear. Without even thinking about it, he wiped a single tear that ran across her cheek. He wasn't her Steve, but those eyes... "I never believed that I would have felt the way you made me feel after all those years in the ice. I owe you everything. And repaying you in the way I did... I wouldn't have forgiven me if I were you. An apology won't help, I know. For what itâs worth, you will always hold a special place" he told her in tender way that reminded her of their story and more tears found their way out. And he wiped every single one of them. She could tell from the way he hugged her when he saw her. He had kept the silent promise he had made when she was too drunk to remember what she had asked of him. Years had passed since she allowed herself to see him again. After saying a polite hello, they hugged like friends did. But then he squeezed her a little tighter right before he let go. She had almost rested her head on his chest out of habit, because it suddenly felt just like old times. She had thought she'd never be in his embrace again but there they were. They both wanted to hold on tighter but they knew they were different now. But she could tell from the way he hugged her, from the way he held on just a little longer, that somewhere, deep down... "I missed you too" she smiled at him, a strange but very much wanted feeling of relief washing over her heart. They both knew, no one could stop loving. Once you have loved someone honestly, truly, you will never be able to un-love them. You can only find someone you will love more. At that time, your old love will not feel so strong, but it will always be in your heart, it will never let you forget something that at some point along the way made you happy. "You hold a special place in someone else's heart too, you know" he commented like a genie. Her eyebrow arched. "Stop playing matchmaker, you old wise owl" she mocked him. At least, she could start again. He still held her face in his hands, he still held a piece of her, he would always be her first love. The bigger the love, the harder the fall. They stayed like that until Bucky walked into her office, looking for her. He narrowed his eyes suspiciously when he saw Steve holding her but he reprimanded himself almost immediately. She saw the way Steve looked up at him and she knew he wanted some alone time him. Leaving his hands was harder than she thought, smiling at all times. "Don't be a stranger, Rogers" she bid him goodbye but his eyes told her this wasn't the last time they would see each other and she found solace. She passed Bucky in her way out, smiling brightly to him, making his eyes sparkle in hope. She had just left the room when she heard Steve being completely honest.
"She is different now. I was too much of a punk to see how beautiful she really was. Her heart was beautiful, she cared so much about me and I never understood why. I don't think I treated her the way she deserves to be treated - but you do. Don't look at me like that, Bucky. I am old, not blind. I can see the way you two look at each other. Back then, her love scared me, it was so intense. I almost forgot how enticing her smile was. She just wasted so many tears on someone like me and for that I will never forgive me" he told his friend but his mind was someplace else. She smiled to herself and finally left them alone. Whatever was to come, she would face it. Finding closure had never been about forgetting. It had never been about drowning out the voices of her past or about closing her heart to memories that used to make you happy. Finding closure meant accepting a situation for what it was and moving on. It was coming to terms with the way things were and knowing that she couldn't change what had happened, but could still find growth among the broken pieces.

234. Sonic the Hedgehog #166
DON'T. PANIC. I know. It's back. Don't worry too much though - it only lasts for two issues, so even if you detest this AU with all your heart and soul you only have to deal with it for a couple days. To be perfectly honest, I don't actually find the plot of this installment of Mobius 25 Years Later to be that much more interesting than the previous one. I find everyone to be a little too out of character, for one thing. However, it does at the very least provide a bit of closure to a story that was left wiiide open previously, so there's that.
Mobius 25 Years Later (Part One): Tempus Fugit
Writer: Ian Flynn Pencils: Tracy Yardley Colors: Jason Jensen
Last time on Mobius 25 Years Later, we left off with the timeline seeming to dissolve and rip itself apart while Sonic went back in time to fix the temporal and spatial instabilities of Mobius. Well, he fixed the threat of time coming to an end all right, but in the process somehow caused the timeline to skew wildly from how it was previously. In this new future, Shadow is a brutal and ruthless dictator, worship of Maria as an angelic guardian figure is officially sanctioned by his government, the Chaotix patrol the streets headed by King Shadow's chief enforcer Knuckles, and perhaps most bizarrely of all, Sally is married to Shadow as his queen. I have to note here that no explanation is given at all for how the timeline could have gotten messed up so badly - like, it doesn't really say anything about Sonic destabilizing specific events in the past, he just did something apparently, and stuff got messed up as a result. I'm personally not a fan at all of the idea of Shadow becoming so brutal like this, because it's just so out of character for who he's shown to become in the games (and in the comics coming up in a few issues), but at the very least there's the potential excuse of oh, well, this is a timeline where he didn't discover his true purpose in life and thus got led astray by darker influences or whatever. Regardless, things are very bad, and now Tails is on the scene, trying to figure out a way to fix it.
You see, he actually is able to remember the old timeline due to some kind of protective armband, and knows that this one isn't right. So he decides to go about recruiting some of his old allies to fix things, first starting with Knuckles. He walks in as Knuckles is instructing Lara-Su in her Guardian abilities, and Knuckles, once he realizes why Tails is here, ushers his daughter out grimly so they can talk alone. Tails tries to get Knuckles to listen to him, explaining that he took measures to protect himself, his wife Mina (remember? They got married in this timeline) and their kids from the time shift, and that he knows that everyone who was near the time machine when it freaked out still has memories of the other timeline. This merely pisses Knuckles off for some reason, and he yells at Tails to get out before he arrests him. Tails leaves the room dejectedly, but Lara-Su cheekily tries to cheer him up outside the door, clearly having overheard everything.
I already like this version of Lara-Su way better than the old one. The old one was weirdly whiny and selfish, while this one is immediately more assertive and ready to jump into action. As this is going on, we move to the dungeons beneath "Castle Mobius," where King Shadow is currently carrying out a rather⊠rough interrogation of Rotor, who's chained up to a wall. Shadow curtly acknowledges Rotor's strength of will in not "cracking" yet (it's not explained what information exactly he's trying to get out of him, but we can assume it relates to the timeline shift), and tells him he knows he will break eventually and leaves - and who is outside the cell to greet him but Lien-Da? She's apparently the one who captured Rotor for him, and she too remembers the old timeline, thanks to Cobar - we finally find out what she did when she confronted Rotor and Cobar back then!
Yeah, really don't like this version of Shadow. The juxtaposition of worshipping Maria as a gentle protective goddess, and Shadow's use of brutal torture tactics and authoritarianism is kind of⊠bizarre. A Legion mook runs up with information that Lara-Su has joined up with Tails, and Shadow orders Lien-Da to contact Knuckles to conduct an arrest of the two. Meanwhile, the two in question have managed to find Sonic, bedraggled and sitting next to a bunch of trash in a back alley, looking pretty awful. He, of course, is the same Sonic from the old timeline who went back to "fix" everything, and is horrified at how everything has turned out in this version of the future. It's once again worth noting that he sheds a few tears here, especially because this is around the time Sega started interfering more in the comics to make sure things were portrayed to their liking. There's a sketch version of the below page floating around somewhere showing Sonic crying substantially more than he is in the final product, which honestly, I don't know why Sega felt they had to force the artists to tone it back here, because I think if there's any circumstance where a normally cheerful and stoic person might truly lose it, it's losing their two children forever to the abyss of time.
Lara-Su urges the others to get up so they can go defeat King Shadow and save the day, but a sudden blinding light engulfs them. Sure enough, it's Knuckles, backed by what looks like half of Portal's police force, telling the three of them to surrender immediately as they're under arrest for treasonâŠ
The Chaotix Connection
Writer: R. Chacon and Ian Flynn Pencils: J. Axer Colors: Jason Jensen
This story is a bit bizarre - for one, it opens with a shot of Knuckles tied up and apparently coming to after being knocked out, only to immediately pull back a full day to show us what led up to this moment. That's a perfectly legitimate storytelling tactic, but it has to be done right for it to work, dammit, and the execution here is mostly just awkward and confusing. And for another, though someone is listed as the letterer for this story, very little of it is actually hand-lettered - the vast majority of it is machine-lettered. Seriously, out of the dozens and dozens of speech bubbles in this one story, which takes up half the issue's page span, only seven are hand-lettered (yes, I counted). I'm really not sure why this would be, nor why they bothered actually having someone letter only seven speech bubbles in the entire story when a computer was apparently doing that job perfectly well, but oh well. Anyway, here's the rundown - yesterday in Station Square, Rouge (sporting her Heroes getup) was snooping around for any juicy information when she got her hands on a nice little tidbit - namely, that Renfield T. Rodent is back. Remember him?
Aw, it's nice to see Sally and Sonic actually joking around with and teasing each other a bit. Things have been so frosty between them for so long, I forgot how nice it is to just see them being sweet and silly. The next day, Renfield's foreman oversees a delivery of slot machines to the new casino while Renfield himself watches from behind a screen, still sporting his capitalist tycoon grin and definitely seeming very shady as he talks to himself about putting on a grand show with this new scheme. The Chaotix and Rouge all arrive at the venue, and Rouge and Julie-Su nearly come to blows when Rouge insinuates that her only reason for coming is to show Knuckles that she's "gone legit." Knuckles breaks up the fight before it begins, and the group is let in early when they bluff to the guards that Renfield is expecting a meeting with them. They agree to split up and search for anything suspicious, checking in every few minutes to make sure none of them goes missing. Knuckles heads off on his own, and soon discovers an elevator that takes him to a secure room where the foreman is discussing the shipment with the help. When he hears Eggman's name mentioned, Knuckles knows this operation is rigged, so he leaps into action and begins to fight everyone present⊠alone. Seriously, man, couldn't have waited one whole minute to call in your backup? Speaking of the backup, Mighty in particular has decided it's prudent to check the food given what happened last time, while several of the others go for the slot machines as customers begin to file in.
Gotta love Mighty - no time to test anything scientifically, let's just shove potentially poisoned food into our mouths and see if we pass out! Knuckles, upstairs, finishes punching out the mooks and goes for the foreman, but when his fist makes a clanging noise against his nose he realizes that he's one of Eggman's auto-automatons. Things only get worse when said auto-automaton punches back, knocking him clean out. While the foreman ties him up and calls Renfield, Rouge, Vector, and Espio all check the slots, noticing that people seem to be acting weird while playing them. Sure enough, one glance at a screen later, the three of them are hypnotized as well. Knuckles wakes up with Renfield gloating over him, and naturally the rat immediately launches into a villainous monologue about how Eggman is paying him to use his fake slot machines to scan the brains of the patrons, allowing him to turn that data into a blueprint for what basically amounts to a Terminator. In fact, the whole casino is built on top of a factory that will start spitting out robots the moment the scans upload! Suddenly, the writers realize in horror that they only have two more pages to wrap this plot up, and so they go into overdrive figuring out a way to solve it in this limited amount of space.
I love the idea that Mighty just casually crunched up a whole factory and carried it around with him just to prove a point here. The police show up out of nowhere to arrest a fuming Renfield, and Julie-Su and Mighty explain that they knew something was wrong when Knuckles didn't check in, and even more hilariously, apparently on their way up here they just randomly passed the factory and Mighty was like "Yo, that doesn't fit the décor," hence him crunching it up. The president pops in out of the ether to congratulate the Chaotix on a job well done, and as Julie-Su and Rouge bicker some more, the curtain falls on one of the weirdest and most out of place stories we've experienced in some time. Bravo, Romy and Ian, we've officially learned that when you two collaborate, crap gets bizarre!
